All state and Players of the year

Guess winning your games isn't what is it important. AI having five players all state is a joke. And anyone who says the silk panty league isn't the most hated conference in the state simply look at the all state numbers for DII:

Delmar and Woodbridge: 15 all state selections (two semifinal teams)
Howard and AI: 7 all state selections (both lost first round)
DMA and Archmere: 6 all state selections (both lost first round)
SPL: 1 all state selection (kicker) (two semifinal teams)

UpstateDelaware have you been sleeping under a rock these last couple of days . If I recall Woodbridge won the Division ll title. Why wouldn't they have multiple players make All-State. I'm confused about your statement..smh

He’s not saying Woodbridge shouldn’t lol he’s saying he doesn’t understand why teams who lost in the first round have way more all state players than teams who were in the semifinals and finals. It is kind of ridiculous in my opinion too. No one is arguing that Woodbridge shouldn’t. The argument is that friends should have more than just their kicker and tower Hill should have at least somebody.

Read his post again buddy. No where in there does it say Woodbridge shouldn’t. Do you really think AI deserves 5 yet they lost to TH who didn’t even get 1 kid?

personally I dont think the team they play on or its record should matter being its an individual award. They should just choose the best players at their positions regardless who they play for. but that's just me.. We all know how this works.. Name recognition and you scratch mine ill scratch yours ..

I will go over the process once again like ever year.. The coaches get a form with the positions and they put in three names at each one. Where do they get the names from? Mostly from teams they played but also they refer to the all conference lists and of course there is the known names like the kids with offers etc. Coaches down South put in their guys and North puts in theirs and it gets tallied. The forms are due before the state finals. Not all coaches bother to fill it out and send it in either especially ones from weak programs who's kids have no shot at getting in.

As for the POY awards they are chosen by the DIFCA committee and a few press representatives.

Most states its the media that chooses all state not sure which method is better

Coach of Year is same process and deadline as all state ballots

III. All-State Selection Process

a. Dues- must be paid before Conference selection meeting or All-State selections will not be counted.

b. It is imperative that the head coach submits a complete ballot; the ballot is to represent the feelings of the entire staff.

c. Players will be selected by the highest number of total points by position. In the event of a tie, the 1st tiebreaker will be number of 1st place votes. If it is still a tie, then it goes to second place votes and then 3rd place votes.

d. Auditor: The ballots are to be sent by any of the following means to XXXXX:

e. Mail: xxxxxxxxx, Wilmington, Delaware 19808

f. E-mail: xxxxxxx@aol.com

g. Ballots are due on the Thursday after the State Semi-Final Games

h. All-State Selection Meeting @ school to be determined beginning on the first Tuesday after Championship Weekend (Board members and media only)

i. Information will be presented to Delaware Online by 8:00 pm on day of selection

You know your stuff BiB86! Smart man but I just think tournament success should impact who gets all state a little more. But then again it is all about who the coaches vote for and most guys stick to their team or conference so I get it. I just think it’s a little flawed.

where is the list? i agree its an individual award, lets say there is a 6 5 , 320 pound offensive tackle who is really good but his team wins like 2 games, because everyone else inhales. shouldn’t stop him from being all state.

It’s on Wdel. I do agree and those guys do get selected there are some guys who are from bad teams that get selected like guys from teams like Polytech and Sussex Tech to name a few. But I just feel like because the Independent conference is small they do not always get the recognition they deserve because they don’t get enough guys to the meeting as really only 2 teams would’ve went to the meeting.

The biggest stand out from the all state list was no TH players selected, only 1 Wilm Friends player (K), and no players Dover defense. Congrats to all the players who were selected from the state of Delaware. Also when and why did DIFCA select to go to a 3rd team all state? Such a small state.

That's true but on teams like friends and tower hill, there must be players that were good enough to be all state if they were both top 4 teams in DII. Gotta be at least one from each or how would they be better than a team like AI who has five different all state football players

It has been this way for the last five (5) years that Friends has made it to the Semi Finals and Finals 2x. At most 1-2 players a year would be selected, if lucky. It would appear that the coaches from the SPL either don't participate in the All-State selection process or the disrespect from the rest of the coaches around the state runs very deep. Probably a combination of both. I think it's more the former rather than the later as Back in Black indicates above, if not enough votes are coming in for SPL players from their coaches, then they will not be selected. Over the past five years there have been maybe 4 or 5 guys who have been selected from the SPL and most of those guys were guys who good enough to garner attention around the state without the support of the SPL Coaches during the All-State selection process. I suspect that the coaches from the other conferences take this process seriously and support "their guys." In sum, blame the SPL coaches for not supporting their own guys in the process and no one else! So if you have a beef about a SPL kid not being selected ask the Coach if he participated and submitted his ballot.

Wrong actually last time friends made the finals they had 5 all state guys. Let me give you guys a story from personal experience. Back when I played I was 3rd in the state state in total TDs and 5th In total yards yet another QB from my conference who had half of my statistics got all state because he made the state championship. I was pissed at the time but looking back I realized it made sense because he led his team farther than me. If all state is only about personal success than there was no reason that kid should’ve been over me but even I agree that making it far in the playoffs should warrant some all state love.

I do agree though I don’t think the SPL does a great job of getting coaches out to all state voting

The ballots are due Thurs before the state championship.. That is just the deadline for turning them in many ballots are sent in weeks prior to that.. unless a coach is going to wait until the last minute to send it in the play-offs pretty much aren't included in their choices. Coaches of teams not in the play-offs often will send their ballot in (or at least fill it out) their last week of the reg season because that when they will all be together to discuss the choices.

My mistake they did only have 2 got them confused with tatnall too cause they had 3 that year.

The struggle is real.. try playing for a small non conference school.. True story

2012 Caravel undefeated state champs.. 1 yes 1 all state selection 1st, 2nd or 3rd team... must have been one hell of a coaching job to go undefeated with only 1 all state player lol

As someone who is involved with this process, I can tell you BiB is spot on. Even at the meeting, coaches are just not terribly invested in this. Coaches always preach team over all, then are asked to single out kids for recognition. Very few, if any, enjoy this part.

Must have been! Haha I just think other coaches should be more open minded to selecting other players and try to get those smaller schools who do well more involved in selection because some of those kids really do deserve it and they get overshadowed by the big conferences who only vote for their guys or guys in their conference.

Thats the rub. Even if a SPL coach can get all the other SPL coaches to vote for their player its only 4 votes.. The Friends kicker probably got some juice from the Hen South coaches going down there and kicking a 28yd game winner to beat Woodbridge.. That and he has a very recognizable and easy to remember name.

So 1 kicker gets recognized for 1 kick the whole season. Yet TH has no one make the list or any defenders from dover? TH schedule ok, yet they went to the semi's? Was dover's defense that bad, or too many offensive guys so they didn't vote for any defenders?

I am sure they got votes but just didnt add up to more points then the players that got in had.

Goes like this

QB- 1. xxxxx 2. xxxxxx 3. xxxxxx

every 1. vote the player gets 3 pts 2. vote 2pts 3 vote 1pt

they collect the ballots and add up the pts and they fall where they fall

Incorrect. In 2016, which is the last time they were to the finals, they had only two (2) Benneck (QB) and Jaworski (FB) were 3rd teamers. I would like to know who the others were?

Incorrect. Their Kicker was 5/5 on field goals and had two game winners. I am not sure there were any other kickers who had 5 FGs in the state this year this year, plus a 38 yarder in the State Championship. BTW kicking does not only involve FGS.

Look up I already corrected myself earlier I said I got tatnall and them confused cause there were 5 Indy guys that season.

So you don’t believe either of those teams deserved anyone else to be all state?

Not saying that. I agree with you that a team that makes it to the Semi Finals (Friends last 5 years) each year and/or the Finals ( 2 out of last 3) have kids that deserve all state recognition and don't get it. I think deserving kids in the SPL get overlooked every year. I also think I posted about this subject last year at this time because it is an obvious slight to these kids. Friends has great coaching but can't keep going back every year without some talent. Again, I think it is because not all of the Independent School (SPL) Coaches fill out their ballots and they only have four teams in the conference vs. the other conferences that have several more teams who vote for their own guys and guys that they see more often. Is it right, No! But that is the way it is until something changes.

Sorry, did not see your correction. You are correct. I think Tatnall had 3 guys that year, Ragland (who is tearing it up at Ursinus) (broke some of their records), a WR/DB and an offensive lineman (Holler) who went to West Point in 2017.

Holler ended up not surprisingly even though he went to West Point for football I think it was Duncan the junior at that time but in any case all good misunderstanding on my part. I just feel for those kids although doesn’t really help with their scheduling so other teams in the state can see what they are actually made of. Also a flaw of the independent conference.

Back when you played .. just curious, what year(s) was that? And was it for Milford?

Have you all thought about the fact that they might just not care about All State? The numbers are stacked against them, period. Team, let's go win games together, for each other... The Ivy League schools and the like don't care about what a bunch of territorial old heads in Delaware think. It's very clear that brains and system can win. Hey son, were you All State? Or, hey son, what are your SAT's....

Do not forget that Randy White managed to squeeze onto 3rd team, All State.

Clearly an indicator. I tell my players every year, if your in it for recognition then don't play. The only thing they have control of their attitude and effort (thanks Rob N.). Go get wins!

I don’t think most kids play for recognition but at the same time it is nice to get acknowledged for your accomplishments on the field. Obviously thats not everyone’s main goal when playing a sport come on. It’s not like there are kids complaining on here it’s adults noticing patterns that I get are the way they are and there is no way to change it but still very flawed.

It sounded to me like the Independent coaches are being hung out a bit for not supporting or pushing their kids. When I first looked through the First Team list, it looked like almost all kids from Middletown and south. Was the imbalance accurate? Who knows... I know that in the sports I coached, The Henlopen coaches voted as a block to their benefit. With 4 conferences up North and two in the South, the strength of the Henlopen vote is easy to see. Again, just saying I thought the Independent coaches could be doing all they can, they just don't have the numbers.
