Boeheim Defends Cooney

Another example of why "social media" is among the worst developments in sports, particularly college sports.

Cooney got the job done last night in his last college game. I believe 22 points that included 4 threes.
Agree with you,JM.

Listen, when the starting shooting guard for Syracuse shoots 34% from the field for the season, fans are going to gripe. Doesn't matter who it is. We just don't like it because it's our boy Trev.

The coaches at Cuse love his defense, his court smarts and his hustle. Yes- his shot hasn't been as expected this season but it certainty came back on Saturday... But unfortunately the rest of his team couldn't shoot in that one.

I would have love to see him just increase his "off the dribble" game while at Cuse; would have been more of a Mufti-Dimensional offensive threat and would have had cleaner looks for some of his three point attempts.

I've always been neutral toward Cooney. When at Sanford I saw a player who hustled, understood the game, didn't turn it over, played within himself, good team player etc...

But there wasn't any particular aspect of his game that stood out. Not a great shooter...saw some games he shot well, others not so much. Not particularly quick. Okay as a defender. Got a few rebounds a game. Decent ballhandler. But not one individual element of game was great.

So with that said, I'd say his career at Syracuse was consistent with his skills.

He knows how to play and he knows how to win! At the high school level, he won two state championships, and at the collegiate level he has played in two NCAA Final 4 games, is #3 all-time on the Syracuse, Three-point shooting list, # 10 all-time in steals, logged more minutes than anyone else on the team and probably 95% of the players in the country and topped it off with a degree. If Boheim didn't defend him, I sure would. Trevor is an outstanding basketball player; a coach's dream, he is an unbelievable teammate, a young player's role model, an opponent's nightmare, and an amazing person. Give that man his due. I've said it many times before, Trevor Cooney is a WINNER!

Maybe the most talented DE HS BB players I have seen was Dexter Boney. It has been like 30 years. Brandywine's Boney went to UNLV for 2 years after 2 years at Hagerstown JC.

Looking at the total picture with Cooney....has there ever been a DE HS Bball player who had a better college career? I need to give it some thought.

That time span of 80's to 1990. WOW! Tony Tucker , AJ English, Mark Harris, D. Booney, Dutton (Howard HS), JJ Taylor, B Wright, Stan Waterman, Mike Brown (Howard HS) and MANY MANY more.

Ben Benil? Lately Delaware have been putting players in college and they have been great kids and doing great on and off the court.
