Hawkeyes Prevail in 1 vs. 2 Blockbuster

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated No. 2 Penn State, 19-17, on Friday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes won six-of-10 bouts. They traded technical falls at 125 and 141. They dropped a one vs. two decision and 165, and flipped the script on a one vs. two at 174. They led early, trailed in the middle, and kept punching until the dust settled with a 7-0 win at heavyweight.

“That’s a heavyweight boxing match,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “A fist-fight. Not a fist-fight because you get in trouble for saying that, but it’s a fist-fight back and forth. Whatever the crowd was, I don’t think anybody left, do you? I don’t think anybody left.”

No one left until Tony Cassioppi walked off the mat to the applause of 14,905 fans bellowing in admiration. His shutout gave Iowa its first lead since the dual’s opening match. It punctuated a rally that saw Iowa erase an early seven-point deficit, and it dealt Penn State its first Big Ten loss since the Hawkeyes topped the Nittany Lions on the road in 2015.

“It was awesome. We have great fans. It was loud,” Cassioppi said. “We have a great group of guys and we stayed in our matches. We didn’t let the effects of the other matches boil over into our match. We all were focused on what we had to do.”

Iowa found itself trailing 11-10 at the break, despite winning three-of-five first-half matches. Spencer Lee opened with a 16-1 technical fall at 125, his sixth straight, but an injury default at 133 and a team point deduction for failing to control the mat saw the Nittany Lions jump in front, 6-4.

Penn State stretched its lead to 11-4 after three bouts, but wins from Iowa’s Pat Lugo and Kaleb Young trimmed the lead to one. The second-half opened with consecutive matches featuring one vs. two. Top-ranked Vincenzo Joseph used a six-point throw to top No. 2 Alex Marinelli, 7-5, at 165, and at 174, Michael Kemerer put on a performance that could have otherwise sealed Iowa’s fate.

The second-ranked Kemerer scored takedowns in every period, tossed in a reversal, and added 1:22 of riding time to finish on top of No. 1 Mark Hall, 11-6.

The win was Kemerer’s fourth straight against a top eight opponent, and likely means he is one win away on Sunday from earning his first career No. 1 ranking.

“I’m not really about proving stuff to anybody but myself,” Kemerer said. “The goal is March. It was good to go out and get this win and prove, but at the same time nationals is what we’re looking to and we have to just keep getting better every day until then.”

Kemerer’s win set up a best-of-three in the dual’s final three bouts. The Nittany Lions struck first when No. 9 Aaron Brooks won by 4-2 decision against No. 6 Abe Assad. That set up a do-or-die for Iowa, and it started with Jacob Warner’s 4-2 win over Shakur Rasheed. Warner scored a takedown in the opening minute and used 1:27 of riding time to earn the win, setting up the winner-take-all at heavyweight.

“Warner learned from the Nebraska match,” Brands said. “He got caught up and wrapped up in all the noise from Assad’s match. That is how you become a seasoned veteran. That is how you learn to take care of business in here and do what you are here to do, and that is wrestle your match.

“We grew up a little bit. Cassioppi lives for that. I don’t think we had to find out if he can handle that. He lives for that. Now we have to keep getting better. We are getting on bus and heading to Michigan State and we have to be ready to go. We are onto Michigan State.”

Cowboys Hold Off Oregon State for Third-Straight Win

Pokes win final matchup to secure victory

CORVALLIS, Ore. (Jan. 31, 2020) – The Wyoming wrestling team held on to win a hard-fought dual Friday evening over Oregon State, defeating the Beavers on the road, 18-13 to secure the Cowboys’ third consecutive dual victory. No. 31 Dewey Krueger’s 8-3 victory over Logan Meek at 157 pounds was the deciding win for the Pokes in the final match of the night.

“It was a really good experience for us,” said Head Coach Mark Branch.

“We wrestled a really energized team that we were wrestling at home, in front of their crowd. They came out with a lot more energy than we did. We have to learn to match that. We have to have more energy than our opponents no matter what the situation is or where we’re wrestling at. “I like the fact we showed some guts and found a way to win. The bottom line is, it was a battle.”

The dual started out at 165 with Cole Moody dropping a heartbreaker in sudden victory to Aaron Olmos, 6-4, however, the Pokes responded by rattling off four-straight wins to go up 12-3 in the team score. No. 11 Hayden Hastings started the run with his 6-3 decision over Jackson McKinney. Hastings trailed 2-1 in the second period, but got an escape, followed up quickly by a takedown to take a 4-2 lead into the third. In the final period, Hastings added another takedown and was able to hang on for the win.

At 184, Tate Samuelson tallied three takedowns in his 8-3 victory over Colton Beisley. Samuelson also got an escape in the third to go up 5-1 and eventually earned the riding time bonus to end things. Stephen Buchanan at 197 made it three consecutive wins for the Cowboys as he defeated OSU’s JJ Dixon, 9-5.

The bout was tied 3-3 after the first period with both wrestlers getting an escape and a takedown. After Dixon took a brief 4-3 lead in the second, Buchanan snagged the lead for good with his second takedown of the match and then in the third, recorded a reversal to begin the period and added his third takedown for good measure after a Dixon escape.

At heavyweight, 18th-ranked Brian Andrews grinded-out a 2-1 win over Jamarcus Grant. The two were scoreless after two periods, but an escape from Andrews in the third was the difference as he rode Grant out the rest of the period and picked up the riding time bonus. Grant’s only score came on the second stalling warning on Andrews.

After the Beavers got a major decision at 125 to cut into the Pokes’ team lead, 12-7, eighth-ranked Montorie Bridges got the marquee win of the night in a top-15 showdown with Oregon State’s 15th-ranked Devan Turner, 7-4. Bridges took a 2-0 lead into the second period before Turner was able to tie things up with a two-point nearfall. However, Bridges was able to get an escape and took a 3-2 lead into the final period. Turner would tie the bout again with another escape before Bridges took the lead for good with his second takedown to go up 5-3 and then earned penalty point, as well as the riding time point.

Oregon State would not go away though, getting back-to-back wins at 141 and 149 pounds as 25th-ranked Grant Willits held off Trevor Jeffries’ comeback bid, 12-10 and Lane Stigall defeated Jaron Jensen, 9-3 to make the team score, 15-13.

Krueger’s match got off to a fast start as both he and Meek got a takedown and an escape in the first, however, Meek wouldn’t score again as Krueger again scored three points in the second period, followed by Meek’s second stalling warning and then the riding time bonus in the third to secure the dual victory for the Cowboys.

“Dewey felt it, he came out way too jazzed and was looking for a home run. Halfway through the match I told him ‘just wrestle, just score and take a deep breath.’ It took him a while to settle down and do his thing and once he did that, it was good. For him to be the only senior in our lineup and to get the win for his team, especially on the road, is hopefully a memory he’ll have forever.”

UW returns home next week now for a pair of Big 12 tilts in Laramie. The Cowboys welcome Fresno State to town Thursday, February 6 for a 7 p.m., match in the UniWyo. The Pokes then welcome Oklahoma State for a 7 p.m., bout Saturday inside the Arena-Auditorium.

'Dogs earn three wins in setback to No. 18 Iowa State
1/31/2020 | Wrestling
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State wrestling team earned three wins on Friday evening against No. 18 Iowa State, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs fell 34-9 to the Cyclones in a Big 12 dual at the Save Mart Center.

Fresno State (7-6, 2-1 B12) got three straight wins from the middle of its lineup as redshirt sophomore 157-pounder Jacob Wright, redshirt freshman Adam Kemp at 165 pounds and redshirt sophomore Brandon Martino at 174 pounds all earned wins by decisions.

Iowa State (6-4, 3-1 B12) countered earning bonus points in all seven of its victories registering a pair of falls, a forfeit at 125 pounds and four major decisions.

How It Happened
With the dual getting started at 125 pounds, the 'Dogs were forced to forfeit giving the Cyclones an early 6-0 lead. A 17-4 major decision by the Cyclones' Todd Small over Gary Joint at 133 pounds pushed ISU's lead to 10-0.

One of the marquee matches of the dual came at 141 pounds as the 'Dogs DJ Lloren, ranked as high as No. 13 by Trackwrestling, went up against No. 6 Ian Parker as the Cyclone was able to record a 9-1 major decision over Lloren to put an end to his eight-match winning streak.

A fall in 4:27 by ISU's No. 7 Jarrett Degen over the 'Dogs Greg Gaxiola extended the visitors lead to 20-0 before Wright got the 'Dogs on the board with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Grant Stotts. A takedown in the first period and an escape in the third period provided as much offense as Wright needed for his 17th victory of the season.

Kemp kept it going after a short intermission with a 8-6 win over No. 32 Chase Straw getting out to a 4-2 lead after the first period and pushed it to 7-3 early in the third period after a takedown. Straw countered with an escape and takedown to cut the deficit to 7-6, but one final escape by Kemp pushed the Bulldog to victory.

The final victory of the dual for the Bulldogs followed at 174 pounds as Martino pulled off the upset of No. 12 Sam Colbray with a 6-5 triumph to cut the Cyclones' lead to 20-9. With Colbray leading 4-3 after two periods, Martino started the third period on bottom, quickly escaping and coming through with a takedown for a 6-4 advantage as Colbray was only able to record an escape the rest of the match.

Iowa State closed the match with three straight wins getting a pair of major decisions and a fall at 197 pounds.

Notables
  • Fresno State falls to 4-2 at home this season.
  • The Bulldogs suffered their first Big 12 loss of the season as they were the final team in the league to suffer a conference loss.
  • The Cyclones move to 9-0 in the all-time series.

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

Illini Push Past Spartans, 18-12
CHAMPAIGN, Ill.
- No. 15 Illinois wrestling pushed past Michigan State with an 18-12 victory Friday night at Huff Hall. With the score tied at 12-12 heading into the final two bouts, redshirt sophomore Matt Wroblewski (197) and freshman Luke Luffman (285) were able to pick up wins in the final matches to give Illinois the dual win. The Illini also saw wins on Friday night from senior Travis Piotrowski (133), redshirt junior Dylan Duncan (141), redshirt freshman Danny Braunagel (165) and redshirt senior Joey Gunther (174). Illinois is now 6-3 on the season, 3-2 in Big Ten Duals, and still undefeated at Huff Hall at 4-0.

"It was an ugly win," said head coach Jim Heffernan. "Gunther and Wroblewski both showed real guts in their wins. We looked flat at some weights and need to get off bottom at others. Back to practice tomorrow to get ready for Sunday."

Senior Travis Piotrowski got Illinois on the board with a win over Garrett Pepple in the 133-pound bout. Piotrowski was sharp in the first period, getting two for a takedown and turning Pepple for a four-point nearfall. Piotrowski would get the riding time point, and win the match in a 7-3 decision. Ranked seventh nationally by FloWrestling, Piotrowski is now 18-2 on the season, including 9-0 in dual bouts.

Redshirt sophomore Dylan Duncan followed up with a win at 141-pounds to put Illinois in front. Taking on Matt Santos, Duncan picked up a takedown late in the second period that would prove to be the difference. Duncan, ranked 12th nationally at 141, would take a 3-2 decision, which pushes his record this season to 14-6.

Redshirt freshman Danny Braunagel was in control in his 165-pound matchup with Drew Hughes. The 15th-ranked wrestler in the nation at 165, Braunagel picked up two takedowns in both the first and second periods on his way to a 9-2 decision over Hughes. Braunagel is now 17-5 this season, and 4-1 in Big Ten matchups.

After Braunagel's win, the dual score was tied at 9-9. Redshirt senior Joey Gunther would come up with a clutch victory in the 174-pound bout. Taking on No. 23 Layne Malczewski, No. 22 Gunther was trailing, 5-3, late in the third, but forced a takedown in the closing seconds of the period to force overtime. Gunther then got a quick takedown at the start of Sudden Victory to win the match, 7-5, and put Illinois back in front of Michigan State, 12-9. Gunther is now 13-4 on the season.

After the Spartans took the 184-pound match to even the score, redshirt sophomore Matt Wroblewski faced off against Nick May in a critical matchup at 197. The two wrestlers went into Sudden Victory, tied 1-1, with escape points being the only scores of the match through the first three periods. Wroblewski then picked up the bout-winning takedown midway through Sudden Victory-1, winning the match over May, 3-1. Wroblewski's win put Illinois back ahead of the Spartans, 15-12, going into the final match.

After Wroblewski's win, freshman Luke Luffman looked to close out the dual in his matchup with Christian Rebottaro. Luffman scored two in the second with a reversal, and that would prove to be the difference. Tacking on the riding time point, Luffman won the heavyweight bout, 3-1, and clinched an 18-12 match victory for the Illini.

Up next, No. 15 Illinois hosts No. 23 Northwestern at Huff Hall this Sunday, February 2 at 1 p.m. Sunday's matchup against the Wildcats will be Tuff N' Huff day, featuring the second annual arm wrestling competition. The arm wrestling competition will begin at 12 p.m., and the champion will win Air Pods.

Pletcher executed a short ‘catch and release’ stint nabbing four takedowns before turning and sticking Hunter Baxter at the 1:57 mark.

The recently-minted No. 2 149-pounder in the country, Sammy Sasso, looked every bit the part. He blitzed Ryan Garlitz for 10 takedowns and an eventual 23-8 tech fall.

Quinn Kinner, bumping up to 157 pounds for the first time at the Covelli Center, flashed his turning prowess. He garnered four near-fall points three different times in short succession, leading to a second straight OSU tech fall. Kinner finished off his opponent in just two minutes, 34 seconds.

Ethan Smith and Kaleb Romero kept it coming at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively, with major decisions. Romero faced a nationally-ranked foe in Philip Spadafora (#24) and was unfazed as a 13-4 victor.

The rout rolled along as Rocky Jordan, Kollin Moore and Traub closed it out with two more tech falls and a Moore pin. Traub’s effort included a team-high 11 takedowns.

Cowboys claim dual win over SDSU
1/31/2020 | Wrestling
STILLWATER, Okla. - Eleventh-ranked Oklahoma State won the first nine matches, including three by major decision, to defeat South Dakota State, 35-3, in a Big 12 Conference wrestling dual Friday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

SDSU dropped to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in Big 12 duals. OSU, which featured nine ranked wrestlers in its lineup, improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in conference action.

The Cowboys claimed each of the five matches between ranked wrestlers, starting with the opening bout of the night as fourth-ranked Nick Piccininni posted a 17-1 technical-fall victory over 23rd-ranked Danny Vega of SDSU in the third period of their 125-pound matchup.

In the marquee matchup of the evening, top-ranked Boo Lewallen of Oklahoma State broke open his match against ninth-ranked Henry Pohlmeyer of SDSU in the third period. Lewallen took a 1-0 lead into the third period but cruised to a 10-0 major decision with a pair of four-point near-falls and an additional point for a riding-time advantage of more than a minute.

Lewallen's win was the first of three consecutive major decisions by OSU wrestlers. Wyatt Sheets, ranked 21st at 157 pounds downed Jackrabbit reserve Peyton Smith, 11-3, while 10th-ranked Travis Wittlake scored a 14-6 major over 26th-ranked Tanner Cook in the 165 pound weight class.

The Cowboys also won some closely contested matches, highlighted by Anthony Montalvo's 3-1 buzzer-beating victory over 17th-ranked Zach Carlson in the 184-pound matchup. The match appeared headed for overtime tied at 1, but the 21st-ranked Montalvo was awarded a takedown just before the horn after a video review.

At 141 pounds, the Jackrabbits' Clay Carlson led 17th-ranked Dusty Hone of Oklahoma State, 2-1, after the first period. Hone took control in the second period, scoring on an escape and takedown for a 4-2 lead, then rode out the entire third period en route to a 5-2 decision.

Also winning by decision for Oklahoma State were 133-pounder Reece Witcraft, a 9-4 winner over Zach Price, and 174-pounder Joseph Smith, who downed Jackrabbit backup Kelby Hawkins, 9-3.

In the final matchup of the night between ranked foes, 18th-ranked Tanner Sloan of SDSU withdrew from his 197-pound match with ninth-ranked Dakota Geer after suffering an injury in the first period. Sloan finished the period, but could not continue.

SDSU heavyweight Blake Wolters ended the Cowboys' shutout bid with a 4-3 decision over Auston Harris in the final match of the night. Wolters opened the scoring with a takedown in the first period and came up with the tie-breaking takedown with about 40 seconds remaining in the match as he posted his second dual win in a row.

Eaglin Wins But Duke Falls to No. 8 North Carolina

January 31, 2020

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Mason Eaglin registered a 4-1 decision-victory over North Carolina's Clay Lautt but the Blue Devils ultimately fell to their nationally ranked foe, 44-3, on Friday night.

The redshirt freshman held a slim 1-0 edge after two periods at 174 pounds but saw Lautt record an escape to tie things up in the third. Fortunately, Eaglin countered with a three-point takedown to earn Duke's lone points in the dual.

The Port Orchard, Wash., native pulls back to .500 in duals this season at 6-6 following Friday's win. He also improved his overall record this year to 17-8.

Eric Carter tried to add points at 157 pounds for the Blue Devils in his bout with No. 17 A.C. Headlee. The two were in a tight battle after the first period with Headlee in front, 2-1. The redshirt senior for the Tar Heels exploded in the second period to increase his advantage to 9-3 before going on to secure a 14-3 major decision win.

Also putting up a good fight for Duke was 285-pounder Ben Frye, who competed in his first collegiate wrestling match. Frye, a current member of the football team as well, joined the Blue Devils earlier in the month after closing out his football season. The Dublin, Ohio, native battled UNC's Andrew Gunning in the final match of the night. Gunning held a 2-1 lead after one, but Frye tallied a quick escaped to start the second period to tie things up at 2-2. Gunning registered a point on stalling to jump back in front 3-2 before closing out the third period strong to steal the win 8-2.

The Tar Heels, who came in ranked No. 8 in this week's NWCA Coaches Poll, had four ranked wrestlers compete Friday, including No. 4 Austin O'Connor (149).

Duke will return to the mat again on Wednesday when it hosts Gardner-Webb for a non-conference showdown at 7:30 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The dual will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra, with TrackWrestling providing live stats.

Purdue Wrestling Falls to Minnesota 27-12

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team fell to visiting 14th-ranked Minnesota on Friday 27-12 at Holloway Gymnasium, moving to 11-3 overall on the season and 4-2 in Big Ten Conference duals. The Boilermakers earned a trio of wins on the evening, including bonus-point victories at 174 and 125 pounds.

The Boilermakers donned special-edition, volt Nike singlets for the dual in honor of cancer survivors, and the uniforms were auctioned off during the dual to the total of $2,680, which will be donated to the Purdue Center for Cancer Research.

No. 6 freshman Kendall Coleman got the dual started at 157 pounds, scoring a second-period takedown to top 22nd-ranked Ryan Thomas 3-1. Coleman pushed the pace for the full seven minutes, but was only able to finish one score as he improved to 25-6 overall on the season and 4-2 in conference duals.

Senior Dylan Lydy continued his red-hot season at 174 pounds, rolling No. 8 Devin Skatzka for a 14-4 major decision. After a scoreless first period, Lydy built a 3-1 lead in the second and then turned up the heat to the tune of 11 points in the third to notch his third straight bonus-point win. Lydy’s 10 major decisions on the year are a team best and make him the third Purdue wrestler in the last 11 seasons to post double-digit majors in a season (Max Lyon, 2018 and Chad Welch, 2016).

Lydy now has an 8-1 mark against ranked opponents in 2019-20, including five wins over top-10 ranked opponents. His four takedowns Friday push his career total to 258, passing Tony Vaughn for 15th in program history, while his 105th career win moves him into 12th all-time at Purdue.

No. 6 junior Devin Schroder accounted for the third Purdue win on the evening, overcoming a slow start to post his eighth technical fall of the season; a 20-5 victory over No. 12 Patrick McKee. The Minnesota freshman came out swinging, scoring in the first and second periods to build a 5-2 lead, but the tide turned in the second period as McKee took injury time in a scramble as Schroder worked for an escape. Schroder took bottom after the injury, escaped quickly and scored a takedown and four nearfall points for a 9-5 edge going to the third. Another escape and takedown, followed by eight straight back points sealed up the win, Schroder’s 21st of the season and fourth in Big Ten duals.

The dual swung on narrow Minnesota wins at 184, 197, 133 and 149 pounds, where the Golden Gophers won by between one and three points. Lyon did his best to climb out of a six-point hole at 184, but got caught in a scramble with No. 18 Owen Webster and couldn’t complete the comeback in an 8-6 loss, while Purdue sophomore Jared Florell was game in his first match of the season at 197 pounds, but came up short 6-3 to Minnesota’s Garrett Joles.

A riding-time point was the difference in a 2-1 decision for Minnesota at 133, while fourth-ranked freshman Brayton Lee needed a stalling point and overtime to edge No. 17 Griffin Parriott at 149 pounds in the final bout of the night, 7-5.

Purdue returns to action Sunday, hosting No. 9 Wisconsin in Holloway at 4 p.m. ET, live on the Big Ten Network. The Badgers posted a 27-12 win at Indiana on Friday, winning 6-of-10 matches over the Hoosiers.

Pokes Finish Strong in Dual Loss to No. 7 Oklahoma State

Andrews and Buchanan Pick Up Solid Wins

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Feb. 8, 2020) – Stephen Buchanan won a thriller at 197 pounds to upset seventh-ranked Dakota Geer of Oklahoma State and at heavyweight, Brian Andrews was dominant in his 15-0 technical fall victory over Austin Harris. As Wyoming closed its dual against No. 7 ranked Oklahoma State strongly in a 25-7 loss to OSU.

Buchanan’s upset over Geer was a back-and-forth affair with Buchanan grabbing an early 2-0 lead with a first period takedown. After a Geer escape, he gained the lead with a takedown of his own to go up 3-2. Buchanan however, would keep fighting and was able to tie the bout at 3-3 with just 12 seconds left in the first with an escape.

In the second, Buchanan regained the lead with an escape and after falling behind thanks to another Geer takedown, Buchanan was again able to get a late escape in the period, this time with only two seconds left to send the matchup into the final period tied at 5-5.

In the third, Geer took an early lead with an escape but just ten seconds later, Buchanan was able to get his second takedown of the match and then earned another point off Geer’s second stall warning of the match to win 8-6.

“For us, this dual was about Stephen Buchanan,” said Head Coach Mark Branch.

“You’re talking about a true freshman stepping up under those circumstances against the No. 7 ranked kid in the country and to be able to flip that switch on immediately and get that first takedown, but then knowing that his opponent isn’t going to take that lying down, he’s not going to quit. To see the energy in the third period that Stephen showed, that’s guts, that’s what we’ve been talking about. You don’t go on shape anymore at that point, you just go on heart. That was an awesome win for him.”

In the next match, Andrews was able to close things on a high note with his 15-0 tech fall. After a slow first period where he got just one takedown, Andrews ramped up the pressure in the second, earning a four-point nearfall in the period after Harris chose bottom. Andrews went up 7-0 heading to the third after Harris’ second stalling.

In the third, Andrews really poured it on by scoring eight points in the period. Andrews earned an escape just three seconds into the third and then tallied another takedown and another four-point nearfall. Andrews closed with the riding time bonus point after earning 5:17 of riding time in the match to earn the tech fall.

“Brian was dominant. I think he controlled his emotions out there and continued to score throughout the match. It was a good way to end,” continued Branch.

The Pokes (7-9) lost a team point due to a coaches’ misconduct after the 184-pound match. Tate Samuelson lost 2-1 in that bout to 15th-ranked Anthony Montalvo after he was called for his second stall warning with just 17 seconds left in the match.

UW has over a week off now as it returns to action Sunday, Feb. 16 at home against Northern Colorado in a 2 p.m., dual. It will be the Cowboys’ final home dual of the season.

Hawkeyes Close Road Schedule with 27-9 Win Over Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated No. 22 Michigan, 27-9, on Saturday night at the Crisler Center.

Iowa won eight-of-10 bouts and owned a 26-5 advantage in takedowns to improve to 8-0 in the Big Ten and clinch a share of the conference regular season title.

Iowa won four-of-five before the break and led 12-3 behind top 10 wins from Pat Lugo and Kaleb Young. Lugo wrestled a scoreless first period, escaped to start the second, and used a third-period rideout to top No. 9 Kanen Storr, 2-0, at 149.

Young used a takedown in each period to defeat No. 9 Will Lewan, 7-3, at 157 and extend his win streak to a career-best 12 matches.

“Pat Lugo is a rider. That guy held points and Pat Lugo made him pay when he chose down,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “Kaleb Young was ready to go and hit some shots that were crisp. One more score there and he can widen that gap.”

Iowa extended it’s team lead after the break with four straight wins.

Alex Marinelli and Michael Kemerer combined for 16 takedowns in a pair of bonus-point wins at 165 and 174. Marinelli used eight takedowns and 3:51 of riding time to win 18-6 at 165, and Kemerer used eight takedowns and four nearfall points to terminate his match 21-6 at 174. Kemerer ended his match in five minutes, 20 seconds.

Cash Wilcke’s takedown in the second period was the difference in his 3-2 win over No. 20 Jelani Embree at 184. The win was No. 75 of Wilcke’s career. Jacob Warner made it seven straight for Iowa with a 3-1 win at 197.

The Hawkeyes also earned wins at 125 and 141. Spencer Lee opened the dual with an 8-1 decision at 157, and Carter Happel won his second straight Big Ten dual, 7-4, at 141.

The Wolverines won by 7-5 decision at 133 and recorded a fall at 285. Paul Glynn’s third-period rally ran out of time at 133, and Tony Cassioppi suffered his first career loss at 285, surrendering a fall in the second period.

“(Michigan” is a team that is coached strategically to be strong at the end of the period, score at the end of the period, keep an eye on the clock. We handled most of that well,” said Brands. “Heavyweight got away from us. We were trading blows with him and got into a position where we just don’t want to me. We have to get better at our finishes. That match ended up lopsided but it wasn’t lopsided.”

'Dogs falter at North Dakota State
2/8/2020 | Wrestling
FARGO, N.D. - The Fresno State wrestling team earned three individual wins on Saturday at North Dakota State, but fell 28-7 to the Bison in a Big 12 dual at the Scheels Center.

Fresno State (9-8, 4-2 B12) collected decisions from Greg Gaxiola at 149 pounds, Hunter Cruz at 184 pounds and Josh Hokit at heavyweight.

North Dakota State (7-3, 4-1 B12) earned wins in the other seven matches collecting a fall, forfeit, major decision along with four decisions.

How It Happened
With the dual starting at 125 pounds, the 'Dogs forfeited the match to give NDSU a 6-0 lead. Making his first appearance in a dual at 133 pounds this season, Lawrence Saenz got the call battling No. 10 Cam Sykora. The redshirt freshman was able to get a reversal after giving up an early takedown to even the match at 2-2, but Sykora built a 6-2 lead after the first period and extended it to 11-4 after two periods. A pair of takedowns in the final period were not enough for the Vacaville native as he dropped the match, 14-8.

Bumping up from his typical 133 pounds, Gary Joint wrestled at 141 pounds for the 'Dogs falling 10-0 to redshirt freshman Dylan Droegemueller to push the Bison's lead to 13-0.

The 'Dogs finally got on the board at 149 pounds as Gaxiola eeked out a hard-fought 3-1 win in sudden victory over Jaden Van Maanen. After two scoreless periods, the pair each earned one point apiece in the third to send it to overtime where the redshirt junior was able to take down Van Maanen for his 15th win of the season.

After three straight losses by the Bulldogs, including a tough 3-2 loss by redshirt sophomore Jacob Wright at 157 pounds to 16th-ranked Jared Franek, Cruz got the 'Dogs back on the winning track at 184 pounds with a 5-2 win over Noah Cressell. A takedown in the first period, an escape in the second and one final takedown in the third was enough offense for the Washington native's 20th overall win of the season.

The final win for the Bulldogs in the dual came at heavyweight as Hokit edged No. 27 Brandon Metz, 4-2. Hokit picked up three points in the second period on an escape & takedown and after a point for riding time collected his seventh win in a row.

Notables
  • Fresno State falls to 0-2 all-time against North Dakota State.
  • The 'Dogs drop to 4-2 in Big 12 duals and 1-1 on the road this season.
  • It was only the Bulldogs' fourth dual meet loss in their last 13 outings.
  • Cruz won his 20th match of the season as he is now 20-9 overall and 9-5 in duals.
  • Hokit moves to 16-3 overall and 8-1 in duals.
  • Attendance on Saturday at the Scheels Center was 534.

Duke Falls at No. 7 Virginia Tech on Saturday

February 8, 2020

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Duke wrestling team ran into another nationally ranked opponent Saturday dropping a 46-3 decision to No. 7 Virginia Tech.

Redshirt sophomore Benjamin Anderson earned the Blue Devils' lone points in the dual after breaking a scoreless deadlock with Caden Darber at 165 pounds following a two-point takedown midway through the match. Darber cut the lead in half thanks to an escape but Anderson responded in the third with an escape of his own to take the 3-1 decision win.

Duke tried to register consecutive individuals wins when redshirt freshman Mason Eaglin battled Cody Hughes at 174 pounds. The two went back-and-forth exchanging points before the Hokies' redshirt senior eventually pulled away for an 8-4 decision.

Duke faced four top-20 wrestlers by InterMat on the night, including No. 16 B.C. LaPrade (157). The Blue Devils were also hindered by having to forfeit at 125 and 141 pounds.

Duke has a quick turnaround as it hosts Navy on Sunday at 2 p.m. in an out-of-conference dual at Northwood High School in Pittsboro, N.C. Live stats will be available via TrackWrestling.
