Rider University 9, Quinnipiac University 0

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Broncs swept Quinnipiac in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.

With the victory in game one Rider (25-18, 13-4 MAAC) clinched a berth in the six-team MAAC Championship Tournament, held May 20-23 at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill NY.

Quinnipiac (24-23, 14-9 MAAC) came into the doubleheader on a four game winning streak and having already clinched a playoff spot.

Rider is now 11-0 at home and has won five of six MAAC series this year. Rider has now won 10 of its last 11 games and 17 of the last 20.

“Clinching the playoff spot means the most,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “In the beginning of the year that is the first thing you want to do, to be in the tournament.”

In the first game Rider scored two runs in the fifth inning on two hits, including an RBI single by senior Greg Fazio (Far Hills/Ridge), to take a 4-0 lead. Fazio had two of Rider’s six hits.

Rider senior Zach Mawson (Magnolia, DE/Caesar Rodney) pitched into the seventh inning, allowing two runs on five hits for his fifth win. “Zack’s been good,” Davis said.

After allowing a first inning hit, Mawson faced the minimum batters from the second inning through the fifth.

Quinnipiac got on the board with a solo home run in the fifth inning and cut the lead to 4-2 in the seventh inning.

Rider sophomore Lee Lipinski (Glen Arm, MD/Calvert) singled and scored on a ground out RBI for a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Parsons doubled and scored on an RBI single by junior Jordan Leinweber (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County) to give Rider a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

In the second game Rider broke the game open with three runs in the fourth inning on three hits, including RBI singles by junior James Locklear (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and red-shirt freshman Brian Uliana (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom), and a sacrifice fly by Thomas, to take a 7-0 lead.

“It helps the pitchers when you get up four runs, five runs, and they can attack the strike zone,” Davis said.

Locklear had three hits in the second game.

Rider freshman Nick Margevicius (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) pitched a complete game shutout for his fifth win of the season. Margevicius struck out seven and walked just two while giving up four hits.

“When your teammates score nine runs for you it gives you a lot of confidence on the mound,” said the rookie lefty. “The offense did a good job today.”

Margevicius has allowed just three earned runs in his last 30 innings pitched. “I didn’t know that,” Margevicius said. “My stuff has been working.”

“That’s impressive,” Davis said. “He throws strikes and he can get ground balls. He’s been pretty consistent for us. We feel confidence when he’s out there. Hopefully he can keep it going.”

In the fifth inning Rider added two more runs on just one hit, four walks and three wild pitches to go up 9-0.

The Broncs scored three runs in the third inning on three hits, including an RBI triple by Locklear and an RBI single by senior Justin Thomas (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South), to take a 4-0 lead.

Senior Eric Strano (Robbinsville) hit an RBI single to give Rider a 1-0 lead in the second inning and had two of Rider’s 10 hits.

The third game of the series will be played Sunday at 12 noon.

Sun, May 10, 2015
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.- Monmouth scored in the first seven innings of the game, and every Hawk in the starting lineup had a hit as the MU baseball team swept a three-game series from Saint Peter’s, taking the Sunday afternoon game 17-6. MU racked up 19 hits on the day to move to 21-20, 13-8 in conference. The Peacocks fall to 9-35-1, 6-15 in the league. With the win, Monmouth clinches a spot in the 2015 MAAC Tournament.

“It was a good day for our seniors,” said Head Coach Dean Ehehalt. “We were able to do some good things offensively, with Moreno and Yunginger giving us a boost at the bottom of the order.”

Steve Wilgus (Woolwich, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) manufactured a first inning run by doubling to right, moving to third on a fly out and scoring on a wild pitch. In the second, Adam Yunginger (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) hit a ground-rule double to right center and came around to score when Dave Moreno (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) lined a single to left that was mishandled, allowing Yunginger to come home.

After Jon Kristoffersen doubled home a run for SPU in the third to cut the lead to 2-1, MU answered with one in the bottom of the inning when Chris Gaetano (Madison Township, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) and Kyle Perry (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) both singled. With Dan Shea (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) batting, a wild pitch allowed the runners to move up and as Gaetano neared third, the throw sailed into left field allowing him to score.

On the first pitch of the top of the fourth, Yunginger lifted a towering fly ball to right that cleared the fence for his first career home run, a solo shot to put the Hawks up 4-1. Monmouth got two more in the fifth, started when Perry lined a ground rule double off the warning track in left center following a Shaine Hughes (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) walk. Shea tucked a two-run double inside the first base bag to give the Hawks a 6-1 advantage.

Monmouth opened the game up with four in the sixth, getting consecutive singles from Robbie Alessandrine (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) and Grant Lamberton (Newark, Del./Salesianum) followed by a Wilgus walk. Hughes ripped a double to straightaway center that landed at the base of the fence to score two, and Gaetano followed that with a sacrifice fly to left. Perry then sent another ball to the warning track, a double to score the fourth run of the inning and give Monmouth a 10-1 cushion.

SPU scored a pair in the 7th, getting one when Michael Ionta lined a ball off Chris McKenna (Pine Beach, N.J./Toms River South)’s foot and another on a double play ball.

MU responded with seven in the seventh, all coming with two outs. Alessandrine again singled to right, and Lamberton and Hughes walked. Gaetano lined a two-run single to right center, and Perry hit a floater that landed near second base for an infield hit and an RBI. Yunginger later added an RBI single before the big blow came from Moreno, lining a three-run double up the gap in left center to cap off the seven-run frame.

Senior Matt Reynolds (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) came on to pitch the ninth inning in his first appearance since 2013. He got Nick Cardamone to fly out to center before being relieved by fellow senior Charlie Battis (Hamilton, N.J./Notre Dame). Battis allowed a three-run homer to Jon Kristoffersen before getting Zach Rawson to hit into a double play to end the game.

Anthony Ciavarella (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) got the win for Monmouth, working five innings and allowing a run on four hits with four strikeouts. McKenna worked two frames, and Jeff Paglione (Mantua, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) threw a scoreless eighth before Reynolds and Battis combined on the ninth.

Offensively for MU, every starter had a hit, led by Perry who was 4-for-5 with two RBI’s and two runs scored. Yunginger went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI’s, while Gaetano was 3-for-4 with three RBI’s and two runs scored. Alessandrine also added three hits, while Moreno had two hits and three runs batted in.

Anthony Assante took the loss for SPU, while Kristoffersen and Ionta added three hits apiece.

“We’re continuing to get better,” added Ehehalt. “Next week is going to be a big test for us, and we look forward to it.”

Monmouth is back on the diamond on Thursday for a critical conference matchup with in-state rival Rider. First pitch is at noon in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Live stats will be available all weekend at first pitch here.

SCOUTING THE WEEKENDRider comes in as the top team in the conference, having won 11 of 13 games and sitting at 12-1 at home this season. Justin Thomas leads the team in hitting at .307 among hitters with qualifying at-bats, and is also tops on the club with four homers and 35 RBI's. Eric Thomas has a 0.77 ERA out of the bullpen in 24 appearances.

These teams have met 49 times, with Rider winning 26 and MU 23. Monmouth has taken the last six, including a May sweep at home last season.

HUNT'S NO-HITTERLast Saturday, senior RHP threw a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Saint Peter's, the first for a Hawk since current Baltimore Oriole Brad Brach did it in 2007 against LIU. He faced just 23 batters, and struck out five while walking just two on 90 pitches. This week, he was named the Louisville Slugger Player of the Week by the Collegiate Baseball News, as well as earning MAAC and ECAC Pitcher of the Week. He was nominated for the Capital One Impact Performance of the Week on ESPN.com, and was leading the vote after 9,000 votes were submitted on Wednesday evening.

600 CAREER WINS
On March 28, in the first win over Manhattan, MU head coach Dean Ehehalt earned his 600th career win. Ehehalt, the 22nd year head man at Monmouth, picked up the win when Grant Lamberton worked out a bases loaded walk in the 13th inning. Freshman Mike Brambilla grabbed his first ever collegiate win in Ehehalt's 600th. Asbury Park Press columnist Steve Edelson wrote a piece on Coach Ehehalt following the win, which can be found here.

CANCELLATIONS

As many teams deal with in the Northeast, Monmouth has had several games washed out due to weather. A full weekend of games at James Madison was eliminated in February, and the Hawks had five straight games cancelled due to weather prior to the series with Manhattan. All four games against Wagner on the weekend of March 21 were not played, and the 3/25 contest vs. FDU was halted in the bottom of the third. The game on 4/22 vs. Lafayette was also stopped in the bottom of the second as a result of lightning and heavy rain.

GAETANO'S HOT STREAK
Sophomore OF Chris Gaetano had a huge weekend in Richmond, going 8-18 (.444) in the four games. He put up a slugging percentage of .833, including his first career home run and triple against Minnesota. He scored six runs and drove in five in Monmouth's three win-weekend, scoring the winning run against JMU on Dan Shea's walk-off double.Gaetano currently leads Monmouth with three home runs.

WEEKLY HONORS
Monmouth has had three pitchers earn conference weekly honors this season, with freshman Matt Littrell and redshirt freshman Justin Andrews being named Rookie of the Week and senior T.J. Hunt earning Pitcher of the Week. Hunt also received awards from the ECAC and NJCBA last week as Pitcher of the Week following his 6.2 shutout innings to earn the win over VCU on 3/13. Ryan Bailey was also named conference and ECAC Player of the Week after a 7-10, two home run weekend at Niagara. Hunt earned the honors again after his no-hitter last week.

MONMOUTH ON ESPN3
On February 12, Monmouth Athletics released a 24-game spring schedule of games to be aired on ESPN3, including 12 MU baseball games. Saturday's games will be the last Monmouth-produced ESPN3 broadcasts of this year.

UP NEXTThe 2015 conference tournament begins on Wednesday, May 20 in Fishkill, N.Y. Monmouth's first game will depend on seeding.

LSU ADVANCES TO SEC TOURNAMENT SEMIFINAL WITH 10-5 WIN OVER ARKANSAS

HOOVER, Ala. – Top-ranked LSU advanced to the SEC Tournament semifinal for the third straight year Thursday night as the Tigers posted a 10-5 win over No. 20 Arkansas at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

LSU (48-9), which has won five of the previous seven SEC Tournament championships and two in a row, will play either Florida or Arkansas in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon. The game will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Noon semifinal game on Saturday between Texas A&M and either Alabama or Vanderbilt.

Thursday’s win marked LSU’s ninth straight victory in an SEC Tournament game, dating back to 2013.

Arkansas dropped to 35-21 with Thursday’s loss and will face Florida on Friday evening in an elimination contest.

LSU capitalized on six errors committed by Arkansas in Thursday’s game, including three miscues in the first inning as the Tigers seized a 4-0 lead.

“I think Arkansas’ errors were the result of the pressure that we put on them,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “We put a lot of pressure on them with our speed and the running game. I thought our team’s speed and our bat-handling ability were big factors early in the game. We put pressure on them, they made some mistakes, and we took advantage of them.”

LSU scored four runs in the top of the first inning against Arkansas starter James Teague. Third baseman Conner Hale lifted a sacrifice fly and first baseman Chris Chinea lined an RBI single to highlight the outburst for the Tigers, who also stole two bases and took advantage of a wild pitchh and three Arkansas errors in the frame.

The Tigers extended the lead to 6-0 in the second as rightfielder Mark Laird ripped an RBI double and shortstop Alex Bregman delivered an run-scoring single.

Arkansas narrowed the deficit to 6-4 in the second against LSU starter Austin Bain as shortstop Michael Bernal, first baseman Clark Eagan and leftfielder Joe Serrano each lined RBI singles, and another run scored on a Bain wild pitch.

LSU reliever Russell Reynolds took over for Bain in the second with two outs and a runner at first, and he retired Arkansas centerfielder Andrew Benintendi, the SEC Player of the Year, on a fly ball to left field.

Reynolds (6-0) was brillant in relief, working 3.1 shutout innings and allowing just two hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Teague (4-4) was charge with the loss as he surrendered six runs – two earned – on six hits in two innings with one walk and no strikeouts.

The Tigers scored two runs in the fourth against Arkansas reliever Jackson Lowery as leftfielder Jake Fraley slapped a run-scoring single and Bregman contributed a sacrifice fly.

Bregman lifted another sacrifice fly in the seventh and centerfielder Andrew Stevenson added a two-out RBI single to give the Tigers a 10-4 advantage.

Arkansas plated a run in the bottom of the seventh rightfielder Tyler Spoon lined a run-scoring single.

Bregman finished 1-for-2 at the plate with three RBI, and second baseman Jared Foster collected three hits and scored two runs to pace the Tigers’ 12-hit attack.

“I feel great,” Ritter said. “This is the first big race that I felt confident going in. I felt like I belonged in this race. There were runners in the race that I’ve faced before and I know that I can run with them. I’m very excited right now.”

An All-East performer, Ritter qualified for the NCAA East Regional at the ECAC Championships on May 15. In that meet, Ritter ran a then Rider record time of 9:55.15, placing second.

At the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships at the beginning of May, Ritter had a gold (steeplechase) and a pair of silvers (1500, 5,000m) and was named the Championship Meet Most Outstanding Performer.

Ritter becomes the first woman and just the third member of the Rider track and field team to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Rider Hall of Famer Jose Lopez ’95 competed at Nationals in the 400-meter hurdles and Desmond Hamilton completed in 2007 at Nationals in the long jump.

“To be the first female NCAA qualifier for Rider is an amazing accomplishment,” Hamer said. “It is something that will cement her legacy in Rider Track and Field history.”

Baseball Topples Lehigh in NCAA Opener, 10-3

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU stole eight bases for the first time in more than 20 years, overcame a rain delay and a 2-0 deficit to advance in the NCAA Baseball Regional, 10-3, over Lehigh on Friday at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

LSU (49-10), champions of the Southeastern Conference and No. 2 national seed in the 64-team tournament, scored at least a run in each frame from the fourth through the eighth innings to pull away from Lehigh (25-30).

“First of all, I would like to compliment Lehigh,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “I was just so impressed by the caliber of young men in their program.. You can just see they have an aura about them of maturity and poise. Their left-handed pitcher really gave us a tough time in those first few innings. He wasn’t a hard thrower, but he was making his fastball run. He was throwing some good change-ups and breaking balls.”

The Tigers return to action in a winner's bracket game against the winner of Friday's nightcap between UNC Wilmington and Tulane. The game will be televised starting Saturday at 8 p.m. CT. by the SEC Network with live streaming video on ESPN3.com. The LSU Sports Radio Network pregame show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Eagle 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge and around the world in the Geaux Zone at www.LSUsports.net/live.

As planned, the Tigers used seven pitchers, of whom Austin Bain was the only to throw more than an inning of work. The staff allowed only five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Andrew Stevenson led LSU at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Eight players had at least one of LSU's 13 hits.

In winning its 26th-straight NCAA Regional opener, the Tigers stole eight bases for the first time since March 26, 1995, at Vanderbilt. It was also a postseason record for the LSU program, breaking the previous mark of five set in 1975.

Lehigh dropped into Saturday's loser's bracket game at 3 p.m. CT. That game will be streamed on ESPN3.com.

LSU starter Alden Cartwright needed only 11 pitches to retire the Mountain Hawks in order in the top of the first. However, when a sudden downpour soaked the infield and delayed the game prior to the bottom of the inning by more than two hours, LSU head coach Paul Mainieri elected to use his bullpen an inning or two earlier than originally planned.

Austin Bain took over for the Tigers and worked around a single and a walk in the third inning to keep the game scoreless.

In the fourth, Mike Garzillo hit his 17th double of the season off Bain and scored on a fielding error by LSU second baseman Jared Foster to put Lehigh ahead. A double by Patrick Walshe increased the lead to 2-0.

A second time through the batting order, the Tigers figured out soft-throwing lefty Nick Macaione in the bottom of the fourth. Stevenson and Chris Chinea each singled and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Danny Zardon's RBI groundout cut the deficit to 2-1 before another wild pitch allowed Chinea to tie the game.

Hunter Newman (3-0) took the mound for LSU in the top of the fifth and worked around a leadoff walk with three-straight outs.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers took their first lead, 3-2, off Lehigh reliever Kevin Boswick (3-4), who took the loss. Alex Bregman was hit by a pitch and stole second before Conner Hale walked. Bregman advanced to third when Hale was caught stealing second and then scored on single back up the middle by Kade Scivicque.

A quick 1-2-3 inning by LSU's Jessie Stallings in the top of the sixth allowed the Tigers to continue its momentum with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. The Tigers extended the lead to 6-2 with an RBI double by pinch hitter Chris Sciambra, a bases-load walk to Hale and an RBI groundout by Scivicque.

First, (Kade) Scivicque came through with a clutch hit for us with an RBI single up the middle,” Mainieri said. “Then when Chris (Sciambra) came in after they made the pitching change and that was just an enormous hit for us. I felt like it really loosened us up and gave us some space on the scoreboard. Just to see a good clutch hit like that gave our guys a big lift.”

After Lehigh struck for a single run off a Doug Norman wild pitch in the top of the seventh, the Tigers added a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Sciambra drove in Chinea with a sacrifice fly and Jake Fraley scored on a wild pitch to give LSU an 8-3 lead.

In the eighth, a double by Stevenson scored Hale from second and Stevenson scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Chinea that put LSU ahead, 10-3.

Hunter Devall, LSU's seventh pitcher of the evening, finished off the Mountain Hawks in the ninth.

POCHE’ PITCHES TOP-RANKED LSU TO NCAA REGIONAL TITLE

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Sophomore left-hander Jared Poche' nearly mirrored freshman Alex Lange's pitching gem with a six-hit, 2-0 shutout of UNC Wilmington on Monday afternoon to give the LSU baseball team its 21st NCAA Regional Championship.

Poche' (8-1) had a career-best eight strikeouts and finished off the Tigers' three-game sweep of the four-team, double-elimination regional at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field that included several rain delays and schedule adjustments.

At 1:09 a.m. Sunday, tournament Most Outstanding Player, Lange, polished off a similar six-hit complete-game shutout of UNCW by the same score (2-0) to put the Tigers into Monday’s championship game.

LSU pitchers threw consecutive shutouts for the first time in the program's 190-game NCAA postseason history.

Following a two-out double in the top of the ninth by UNCW's Corey Dick, LSU's Parker Bugg relieved Poche' to get a strikeout of the potential game-tying run and earn his third save of the season.

LSU (51-10) will face Louisiana-Lafayette (42-21), which defeated Rice on Monday to win the Houston Regional, in a three-game NCAA Super Regional starting either Friday or Saturday at The Box.

Dates and game times will be announced late Monday or early Tuesday.

“First of all, I'd like to congratulate North Carolina‑Wilmington on a tremendous season,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “They've got a classy group of kids and an outstanding coach in Mark (Scalf), and they have a good ball club. They were scary. They were a scary offensive lineup, and I think that just goes to show you just how great Lange was the other night and Jared was today. To shut that team down two games in a row between our pitching and our defense was really amazing to see.

“You know, we didn't knock the cover off the ball these last two games, but one of the things we preach to our players all the time is that ‑‑ to the position players who are both the offensive and defensive players, that if you don't have a great hitting day, you can still help your team win by making great plays on defense or drawing a clutch walk, stealing a base, whatever, and I think today was an example of that.

“I felt good,” Poche’ said. “About the fourth inning things kind of got out of whack. I got six balls in a row, and I’ve got to give a little bit of credit to (LSU catcher Kade) Scivicque. He kind of helped me out mechanically, and I was able to locate my fastball and curveball on both sides of the plate.

“I'd say I had good bite on my curveball, and I was able to locate it on both sides of the plate. I was able to get some swings and misses.”

The Tigers scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning off Seahawks starter Justin Crump (1-2). With two outs, Andrew Stevenson reached on a fielding error by Dick and advanced to second on a balk. Chris Chinea's double down the left field line scored Stevenson from second, and Chinea came home on a single by Jake Fraley.

Both LSU and UNCW left six on base, as the Tigers' pitching held the Seahawks to 1-for-25 batting with runners on base in its past two games.

Defensive gems by LSU shortstop Alex Bregman and Stevenson in right field helped Poche' keep a clean sheet.

Track & FieldRitter in NCAA Championships Thursday

EUGENE, OREGON—History is being made Thursday night, and hopefully again on Saturday evening.

Rider University senior Emily Ritter of Millsboro, Delaware (Sussex Tech) is the first woman from the Bronc track & field program and just the third athlete ever from the Rider track & field program, to compete in the NCAA Championships.

What makes this even more unique is the fact that Ritter qualified for Nationals in the 3,000m steeplechase, an event that she never competed in before last year.

The first time she competed in the steeplechase she won the 2014 Rider Invitational. The second time she ran it she broke the Rider record and placed second at 2014 MAAC Championships. She went on to break her own steeplechase record at the 2014 ECAC Championships to qualify for the NCAA East Regional in Florida last spring.

This year Ritter recently ran a personal record 9:54.34 in the steeplechase at the NCAA Regional May 29 in Jacksonville, Florida. She placed second in her heat and seventh (of 47) to qualify for Nationals in Eugene, Oregon.

Earlier this spring she compiled a 9:55.15 clocking at the ECAC Championships to place second and earn All-East honors.

Ritter was named the Most Outstanding Performer at the MAAC Outdoor Championships this spring after winning the steeplechase and placing second in both the 1500m and the 5,000m.

Ritter and 23 others compete in the 3,000m steeplechase at Nationals Thursday, June 11 at 7:30pm (ET) in the semifinals. The finals are Saturday June 13th at 5:27pm (ET).

The top eight finishers are awarded First Team All-America honors and the second eight are Second Team All-Americans.

Rider has never had an All-American in the track & field program.

History in the making.

Ritter All-American
In Steeplechase Finals Saturday

EUGENE, OREGON—Senior Emily Ritter (Millsboro, Delaware/Sussex Tech) of the Rider University track and field team ran 9:55.88 and finished second in her heat and seventh overall in the semifinals of the 3000 meter steeplechase, earning All-America honors and qualifying for the finals on Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

“This is a very exciting moment for Emily and for Rider University,” said head coach Bob Hamer who participated at nationals in the 1500 meter while running at Penn State in 1994. “She was feeling some pressure about representing everyone out here but handled it beautifully. She executed the race plan perfectly, staying near the front and out of trouble. I’m most excited about how she finished the last 1,000 meters. We’ve been working on that for the last few weeks.”

“I wasn’t thinking about Saturday during the race today,” Ritter said. “I just focused on today’s race and now my thoughts can shift.”

The top five finishers from each of two heats plus the next two best times advanced to the finals which will be Saturday June 13th at 5:27pm (ET).

“The turnaround is something we prepared for,” Hamer said. “We are going to refuel, rehydrate and recover and take tonight to enjoy the moment. Tomorrow we’ll have fun and then prepare for Saturday.”

“At the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships and the Penn Relays, I had quick turnarounds,” Ritter added. “I’m feeling good about Saturday.”

The top eight finishers are awarded First Team All-America honors and the second eight are Second Team All-Americans with Ritter one of 12 runners advancing to the finals.

Rider had never had an All-American in the track & field program until Ritter clinched that status tonight and she is only the fourth female in Rider history to earn that accolade. Deanna Dovak (softball) and Virginia Egusquiza (field hockey) and Sandra Penas (field hockey) previously earned All-America status for the Broncs.

“It has sunk in that we get to keep this ride going,” Hamer said. “We aren’t ready for this to end and it’s going to be a fun few days.”

Ritter is the first woman from the Bronc track & field program and just the third athlete ever from the Rider track & field program, to compete in the NCAA Championships.

Ritter qualified for Nationals in the 3,000m steeplechase, an event that she never competed in before last year.

Second Team All-American

EUGENE, OREGON—What could be better than being in a David Letterman Top 10 list? How about being in an NCAA Division I Top 10 list.

Senior Emily Ritter (Millsboro, Delaware/Sussex Tech) of the Rider University track and field team ran 9:54.72 on Saturday in the finals of the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing ninth at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Ritter finished as a Second Team All-American, missing the First Team (top eight) by 3/10th of a second.

“Emily ran a real tough race,” said head coach Bob Hamer who himself was a ninth place finisher at Nationals in the 1500 meter in 1994 for Penn State. “She put herself out there and when the front women went, she had to go solo.”

“I’ve had an exciting season,” Ritter said. “It was a goal of mine to make this meet and I did. I am a little disappointed that I didn’t make the podium (top eight).”

The top eight finishers are awarded First Team All-America honors and the second eight are Second Team All-Americans.

The race was won by Colleen Quigley (Florida State) in a time of 9:29.32.

“The wind was tough,” Hamer added. “Emily just got caught down the last straightaway.”

Rider had never had an All-American in the track and field program until Ritter and she is only the fourth female in Rider history to earn that accolade. Deanna Dovak (softball) and Virginia Egusquiza (field hockey) and Sandra Penas (field hockey) previously earned All-America status for the Broncs.

“Ninth is an incredible accomplishment,” Hamer said. “I’m really proud of her. She is disappointed that she missed the podium (top eight) but she gave everything she had today.”

Ritter is the first woman from the Bronc track & field program and just the third athlete ever from the Rider track and field program, to compete in the NCAA Championships.

Ritter is the second All-American for Rider Athletics this year with freshman wrestler B.J. Clagon placing fifth at 149 at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Missouri.

Ritter qualified for Nationals in the 3,000m steeplechase, an event that she never competed in before last year.

This year Ritter ran a personal record 9:54.34 at the NCAA Regional May 29 in Jacksonville, Florida, when she placed second in her heat and seventh (of 47) overall to qualify for Eugene.

On Thursday, Ritter was also second in her heat and seventh overall (9:55.88) to qualify for the finals.

“Emily is an All-American and that is something that will set the standard for the future of Rider Track and Field,” said Hamer. “Just mentioning the name ‘Emily’, that will be the standard that everyone will be measured against from here on out. She is one of the greatest athletes to come through Rider University.”

“It’s a great honor to be mentioned with the all-time best at Rider,” Ritter added.

Rider’s Ritter Runs in Steeplechase

EUGENE, OREGON—Senior All-American Emily Ritter (Millsboro, Delaware/Sussex Tech) of the Rider University track and field team participated in the United States of America Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Thursday evening in the 3,000m steeplechase at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Ritter completed her historic season with a time of 10:23.87, placing 22nd with the top 14 advancing to the finals.

Emma Coburn (New Balance) won the preliminaries with a time of 9:36.90.

The top times from the finals in this meet earn a spot on the 2015 IAAF World Championship team, which competes in Beijing, China August 22-30.

Ritter was invited to compete at the USATF Championships after earning All-America status and placing ninth at the NCAA Championships with a time of 9:54.72, in a meet which also took place in Eugene.

Ritter was the first woman from the Bronc track and field program and just the third athlete ever from the Rider track and field program, to compete in the NCAA Championships.

Terps Shine in Open Scrimmage

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland football team held an open scrimmage on Saturday afternoon as part of Fan Appreciation Day at Byrd Stadium. After a nearly two hour scrimmage, the team signed autographs for fans on the field.

“The thing I liked about today is that we got 53 plays for the first group, 47 for the third group and 37 for the second group,” said Maryland head coach Randy Edsall. “We had 137 plays today and the guys ended up doing a lot of great things.”

Four quarterbacks saw action for the Terps as personnel rotated after each series. Junior Perry Hills threw a pair of touchdowns, while senior Daxx Garman threw for 135 yards and scored a rushing touchdown. Junior Caleb Rowe and freshman Gage Shaffer also saw action.

“We will go back and watch the film and evaluate them and decide our steps moving forward from there,” explained Edsall. “We will evaluate each of them based on all the practices and everything we’ve done from the first two weeks. We have charted and graded everything and we will base our decision off what we look for in a quarterback.”

Maryland’s ground game was led by senior Brandon Ross and freshman Ty Johnson. Ross ran for 80 yards on eight carries, while Johnson posted 52 yards on eight carries and scored a touchdown.

“What you saw out of Brandon (Ross) today is what he’s been doing all camp,” said Edsall. “I am very pleased about what I saw today. He has carried over what he has been doing the first two weeks to today. He’s been running very decisive and making great decisions. Brandon has had a really good camp and he has separated himself with the way he has performed.”

Junior wide receiver Lavern Jacobs and freshman tight end Avery Edwards each hauled in touchdown receptions.

Maryland will wrap up its preseason camp on Wednesday and then begin preparing for the season opener against Richmond, which is slated for Saturday, Sept. 5 at Byrd Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12 noon.

More from Coach Edsall:More on the quarterback selection process:

“We will look at how they handle the huddle, how they handle the scrimmage, their production and those things are predictive of how they were evaluated the first two weeks of camp. So again, we will evaluate it after today and see where we are. We told everybody it was a competition; if you tell kids that it’s a competition and then go back and evaluate it on paper and don’t go with what they are doing on the field that’s when you have credibility problems. If we tell them this is what we are looking for and we are going to make decisions off of these things then we have got to stick to that.”

On coaches’ decision to play younger players:

“I wanted to get a look at the younger guys today - I know what some of the older guys can do. I have to find depth and I have to find out where we are for some of the positions so I made a decision to say that I didn’t need to have certain guys in there today. I had to make sure that they are ready to go come Monday so I wanted to just give them a day off.”

On Avery Edwards:

“Avery is going to continue to get better the more repetitions that he gets. He’s going to do well. Seeing him today was a good thing; he’s a big target and that’s good for the quarterbacks. A guy like Avery, with that length and frame, it’s an advantage for the quarterbacks to throw to him.”

On defensive scheme:

“We limited what we could do today with those guys. We wanted to see what we could do just playing base and again we are still evaluating the players because I know what we are doing scheme wise. Plus, when you have an open scrimmage you don’t know who is here watching so we didn’t want to give away too many secrets. But Yannick Ngakoue, Jesse Aniebonam, Cavon Walker and all those guys have had a good camp. I was pleased with them and I have been pleased with them here in the preseason but we still have a lot of things to get done in the next two weeks.”

LAWRENCEVILLE—Behind a goal and assist from junior Carlota Alsina (Barcelona Spain) and a shutout from senior Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s), the Rider University field hockey team won 3-0 on Friday evening on Ben Cohen Field in the 2015 season opener for both squads.

“I was really happy with each and every player,” said head coach Lori Hussong, in her 16th season at Rider. “We are coming along and get better and better each time on the field.”

Sophomore Allison Baligian (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) opened the scoring with a penalty stroke 12:09 into the game, giving the Broncs a 1-0 lead. Baligian had a team-high five shots for the Broncs.

Rider led 1-0 at intermission.

Alsina used a pass from sophomore Melissa Cunningham (Oaklyn/Collingswood) on a penalty corner to give Rider (1-0) a two-goal advantage with just under seven minutes remaining in the game and junior Carlie Spaeder (Newtown Square, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) received the ball from Alsina on another penalty corner, hitting the back of the cage with 1:31 left for the final score.

Rider held a 14-8 advantage on penalty corners, including 9-2 in the second half.

A Preseason All-MAAC honoree, Prettyman recorded two saves as Rider out-shot the Mountain Hawks 19-7. Prettyman now has 33 career wins and recorded her seventh shutout.

“Joelle getting the shutout is huge for the confidence of the defense,” Hussong said. “The defense played really tough, especially senior Melyssa Alonso (Toms River/Toms River HS North).”

“The game went pretty well,” Alonso said. “We came out a little slow but then we really picked it up. Joelle played awesome tonight. We are her soldiers on defense and we do what she says.”

Julia Ward recorded 13 saves for Lehigh (0-1).

Also for the Broncs, sophomore Kesheal Henderson (Heath, Mass./Mohawk Regional) recorded a clutch defensive save late in the first half to preserve Rider’s one-goal lead.

The teams last met on October 6, 2013 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania when Rider won 3-2. In that game, Prettyman made eight saves and Alsina assisted on the opening goal. Rider is 19-16-1 all-time against the Mountain Hawks, having won six straight in the series dating back to 2007.

Rider has won three straight times on opening day, including a 1-0 win over Missouri State in 2014 and a victory at Colgate by a 3-2 score in 2013. The Broncs also won three straight opening day games from 2009-2011.

Rider travels to Washington, D.C., for the first of four straight road games, beginning with a contest against Georgetown University on Sunday at noon. Rider is home again on September 13 against La Salle University.

The William & Mary field hockey team opened the 2015 season on Friday with a tough match-up on the road at Atlantic-10 power Lock Haven, falling by a 3-0 count. The Tribe is now 0-1 on the year, while the Eagles improved to 1-0 overall.

Box Score

In the early going, it was the Tribe who controlled play, drawing five penalty corners in the first half and taking as many shots. The Eagles defenders, however, made three defensive saves and kept the sheet clean before a controversial call late in the half awarded Lock Haven a penalty stroke and the first goal. Sophomore Booter Ellis (Laurel, Del.) also made a defensive save late in the half, preserving what was then a 0-0 tie.

The second half saw another penalty corner early for W&M, with senior captains Pippin Saunders (Mittagong, NSW) and Peyton Smith (Richmond, Va.) hooking up to generate another shot, but were again frustrated. Lock Haven was able to play keep away for most of the half, stuffing the box and protecting the lead until breaking out in the last 10 minutes with two more insurance goals. For the game, Smith had four shots to lead the Tribe, and senior goalkeeper Meredith Savage (Norfolk, Va.) made six saves in addition to Ellis' field stop.

William & Mary is back in action on Sunday, taking on St. Francis (Pa.) at 2 p.m. That game will also be played at Lock Haven.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The digital media, film and television major could not have written a better script. Junior Carlie Spaeder (Newtown Square, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) broke a scoreless tie with 16 seconds left in the game, giving the Rider University field hockey team a 1-0 win over Georgetown University on Sunday afternoon.

“We had the better of the play for the majority of the game,” said head coach Lori Hussong. “We had a lot of chances to score but couldn’t finish. To Georgetown’s credit, they were tough right until the end.”

Spaeder rebounded her own shot, her team-high sixth of the game and hit the back of the cage for the second time this season.

“Carlie’s play was just a super hustle effort,” Hussong said. “We just stayed after it and stayed after it and finally got a goal.”

“It wasn’t me alone for the goal,” said Spaeder. “I was just in the right place at the right time. The team really worked together at the end to create the opportunity.”

A 42-game veteran, Spaeder now has nine career goals, three of which have been game-winners.

Rider (2-0) out-shot the Hoyas 22-6 and held a 15-4 penalty corner advantage but needed Spaeder’s late game heroics after Georgetown (0-2) goalie Rachel Skonecki made 11 saves.

“Georgetown’s goalie played well and that made things difficult,” Hussong added.

Spaeder almost scored in the opening minutes of the second half but hit the post after getting past the goalie on a breakaway.

“I just put that play out of my mind,” Spaeder said. “I didn’t want to dwell on it. To be ready to help the team on the next play, you can’t dwell over small stuff like that. I knew we would continue to work together as a team to get the win.”

Bronc senior goalie Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) recorded her eighth career shutout and her second of the season to remain perfect with a 0.00 goals against average. Prettyman made one save on the day to pick up her 34th career win.

“Joelle and the whole defense is playing awesome,” Spaeder said. “They are meshing well together and to know we have them back there, it brings us confidence. We are really proud of Joelle and hope we can keep it up.”

Rider has won four of 10 games all-time against the Hoyas, including the last three in a row. In 2013, the Broncs built a 4-0 lead in a 4-1 victory and in 2008, Rider won 2-1 in overtime.

“We are young but we are working hard and working together,” Hussong said about the 2-0 start. “We are going to improve as we go, that’s always been the goal and that’s what we try to accomplish each time we go out on the field.”

Rider continues a four-game road trip with a trip to New York to face Columbia University on Friday, September 4 at 7:30pm.

The Broncs return home to Ben Cohen Field against La Salle University on September 13 at noon.

NEW YORK, N.Y.—With the lights of Broadway nearby, the offense of the Rider University field hockey team put on a show.

Trailing 3-2 with 19 minutes left in the game, Rider (3-0) scored three unanswered goals, including twice, 43 seconds apart, both by sophomore Allison Baligian (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) as the Broncs won 5-3 at Columbia University on Friday evening.

“We played on turf for the first time this season so it took a little longer to adjust to it,” said head coach Lori Hussong. “It was a back and forth game and Columbia was tough. Defensively we made some key errors and we need to clean that up better than we did tonight.”

Rider opened the scoring 7:18 into the game when freshman Angie Price (Sydney, Australia/Clifton College) came off the bench to score her first collegiate goal, taking a long pass up the field and stickhandling past the goalie.

“Angie is getting acclimated better and better each game,” Hussong said. “She played a relaxed game and let her skills take over.”

“It felt really good to add what I can contribute to the team,” Price said about scoring her first two collegiate goals. “The most important thing is to contribute.”

Columbia forged a 1-1 tie with 11 minutes left before the half on a penalty corner, breaking a scoreless streak by the Bronc defense of 94:06 to start the season.

Price responded just 2:33 later at 26:39, taking a crossing pass from junior Carlie Spaeder (Newtown Square, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and tipping it past the Lion goalie. Spaeder, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week for all games the opening week of the season, played 64 minutes and now has five points on the season.

Rider took a 2-1 lead into intermission.

Columbia (0-1) scored back to back goals early in the second half, the last on a deflection with exactly 24:00 left in the game as the Lions took a 3-2 lead.

When Spaeder was taken down in front of the goal, Baligian took the ensuing penalty stroke and hit the upper corner with 16:54 left to tie the game 3-3 and just 43 seconds later, she took a pass up the center of the field from Price and gave Rider its third one-goal lead of the game with 16:11 remaining. Price finished with five points in the contest.

“Allison has been a work horse for us,” Hussong said. “Starting with the preseason, she has given us hustle and determination.”

“My teammates pumped me up before I took the stroke,” Baligian remembered. “I just put the ball in a good spot, in the upper left corner. On the play after that, Carlie (Spaeder) had a great first initial touch on the ball and passed it to Angie (Price) and when the defender came over, she placed it on my stick and I just went to the goal.”

“Carlie was outstanding as well,” Hussong said. “She had just as strong game of a game as she did at Georgetown.”

Spaeder scored the only goal of the game last Sunday, with 16 seconds remaining, when the Broncs escaped with a 1-0 win at Georgetown.

A 23-game veteran, Baligian now has 11 goals, including five game-winners and has two game-winning goals already this season, after scoring the opening goal in Rider’s 3-0 win over Lehigh University on August 28.

“The game was intense,” Baligian added.

Sophomore Shannon Hughes (South Plainfield) took advantage of a three on one play with six minutes remaining, notching her first tally of the season for the final score.

“Shannon had a huge game tonight as well,” Hussong said. “Also Carrie Nyce (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) played a strong game. We are gaining confidence as a group. We are feisty but have a strong work ethic.”

Rider senior goalie Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) made three saves in the game.

The Broncs out-shot Columbia 20-13 with the Lions holding a 6-5 penalty corner advantage.

Rider has won four of seven games all-time against Columbia. The teams last met October 3, 2012 when the Lions prevailed 3-2 on Ben Cohen Field. Tonight was Rider’s first victory over the Lions since the 2004 season when the Broncs won 2-0.

Rider’s last 3-0 start was in 2013 when the Broncs defeated Colgate, Georgetown and Villanova.

“The 3-0 start feels amazing,” Baligian said. “This team can do so much and we are finally showing people what we are made of. We need to keep it going for Sunday, Vermont is a very good team.”

“We are really playing well as a team,” Price added about the start to the season. “We are getting better and better and the team is starting to gel. It is an uplifting feeling to be able to contribute to the success of the team.”

The Broncs travel to the University of Vermont on Sunday for a non-conference game at 1pm.

Rider returns home on Sunday, September 13 at noon when the Broncs celebrate Alumni Day and welcome La Salle University to Ben Cohen Field.

Likely Stars in 50-21 Win Over RichmondJunior Will Likely sets Big Ten record with 233 punt return yards

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- William Likely set a Big Ten record with 233 yards in punt returns, Brandon Ross ran for career-high 150 yards and one touchdown as Maryland rolled to a season-opening 50-21 victory over Richmond on Saturday.

Perry Hills threw two touchdown passes for the Terrapins, who scored 37 straight points after falling behind 14-13 in the second quarter.“I thought everyone contributed today, offense, defense and special teams” said Maryland head coach Randy Edsall. “It was a really good win for us…I thought we came out and made a good first impression. There are things that we have to continue to get better at and we will.”

Likely returned eight punts, including a 67-yarder for a touchdown that made it 43-14 with 10:30 remaining. He had another return of 47 yards.

The 5-foot-7 junior also had two kickoff returns for 63 yards, giving him 296 yards in kick returns for the afternoon.“I don’t know if there are enough superlatives to use in regards to Will Likely,” said Edsall. “Our guys know we have a weapon back there and if they do their job he’s got a chance to score. The effort on getting the ball into the end zone, I just felt so good for him because of the effort that he gives and he played well defensively.”

Ross averaged 8.3 yards per carry and put Maryland up 29-14 with a 21-yard TD run early in the third quarter. He eclipsed his previous career high of 149 yards before the quarter ended.

Making his first start since 2012, Hills completed 12 of 21 passes for 138 yards and an interception. The junior wasn't exceptionally sharp, but he didn't have to be because the Terrapins totaled 341 yards on the ground.

Richmond's Kyle Lauletta went 18 for 30 for 220x yards. The Spiders mustered only 56 yards rushing, and Lauletta was sacked four times.

After Maryland took a quick 10-0 lead, Richmond went ahead 14-13 on a 4-yard run by Lauletta with 10:35 left in the second quarter.

Hills then directed a 12-play drive that produced a field goal by Brad Craddock, and a 37-yard touchdown catch by Malcolm Culmer made it 22-14 at halftime.

Ross scored the only touchdown of the third quarter, and a 1-yard touchdown run by Wes Brown made it 36-14.

Maryland then forced a punt, and Likely weaved his way through the Richmond defense before getting to the left sideline and diving into the end zone.

His 233-yard performance on punt returns broke the record set by Nile Kinnick of Iowa in 1939.

With the victory, Maryland improved to 5-0 in openers under coach Randy Edsall. The Terrapins have won six straight season openers and 11 of 12.

BURLINGTON, Vt.—Behind the highest offensive output in over three seasons, the Rider University field hockey team improved to 4-0 in 2015 with a 6-1 win at the University of Vermont on Sunday afternoon.

“The score did not indicate how tough a game this was,” said head coach Lori Hussong who saw her squad win for the third time on the road this season. “Vermont is a tough and skilled team. We just cashed in on our opportunities. We’ve focused on taking advantage of the chances that we are getting.”

For the second game in a row, sophomore Allison Baligian (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) and freshman Angie Price (Sydney, Australia/Clifton College) each scored twice to help the Broncs match their best start since the 2013 season.

“Angie is playing on her main surface and she is enjoying it,” Hussong said. “She is playing with confidence and is adjusting to the American style of game. She is playing tougher and is letting her natural skills take over.”

Baligian got Rider on the board just 1:14 into the game with junior Carlota Alsina (Barcelona, Spain/Institut Matadepera) picking up the assist and Baligian scored again six minutes before the half with junior Carlie Spaeder (Newtown Square, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) picking up the assist.

“Between Allison and Carlie coming down the field, the two of them have both been playing with tenacity,” Hussong said. “Carlie especially is creating so many opportunities getting the ball up the field.”

Baligian leads Rider with five goals on the season.

Spaeder again factored in the scoring column with Price hitting the back of the cage to give the Broncs a three-goal lead with 52 seconds left before intermission.

The Price was right again with the Rider rookie scoring her fourth goal of the weekend on a pass from senior Rachel Ippolite (Woolwich Twp./Kingsway Regional), just 2:30 into the second half. For Price it was her fourth goal of the season.

“We made plays and had a lot of scoring opportunities from many different players,” said team captain Ippolite who is a 65-game veteran. “It was great for everyone to have a part in the scoring. It is important for the offense that everyone gets in on the plays and it makes it a lot more fun when everyone has a part in that. When we all share the effort, it makes for a good team win.”

After Vermont got within 4-1, Alsina scored her second goal of the season with Ippolite picking up her second assist of the game, giving the Broncs a four-goal lead with 6:17 left in the game.

“Rachel had a solid game and so did Carlota,” Hussong added.

Sophomore Kesheal Henderson (Heath, Mass./Mohawk Regional) finished out the scoring for Rider, converting a pass from freshman Christine van Egmond (Heemstede, Netherlands) for the final score with 3:08 remaining.

“The great thing is that no one really cares who is scoring the goals,” Hussong said. “Everyone is playing very unselfishly. We’ve done a good job of cashing in on the opportunities that have presented themselves.”

Senior goalie Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) made five saves.

“You can’t overlook the play of the back line,” Hussong said. “Joelle and the defense just had a solid game.”

“The defense played solid and we did a good job communicating,” said Henderson who moved to the back line beginning with this season. “We are playing together and have that ‘tough as nails’ attitude that coach Hussong expects. Today we just played as if it was a 0-0 game the whole time, no matter how much we scored.”

Each team had 13 shots.

The Broncs had seven penalty corners to 11 for Vermont.

This was the most goals for Rider since scoring eight times in a shutout win against Lehigh on September 30, 2012.

Rider is now 3-0 all-time against Vermont. The teams last met in 2014, also in Vermont when the Broncs scored a 2-1 double overtime victory. The series began in 2003 with Rider also scoring a 2-1 win.

Rider travels to Hofstra University on Friday, September 11 at 4pm for a non-conference game.

“Being undefeated is huge for us and we want to keep it going,” Ippolite added. “We want to keep the intensity going.”

Mercer’s Golden Goal Caps Furious NJIT Comeback Victory

NEWARK, NJ—Senior Joshua Mercer’s second goal of the night, a header in 93rd minute, clinched a thrilling comeback win, 3-2, in extra time for NJIT, which trailed visiting Niagara 2-0 with less than 16 minutes remaining in regulation Friday.

The Highlanders (2-2) trailed their opening home game most of the night, conceding a goal in the third minute and Niagara (0-5) later scored in the 55th minute to take what appeared to be a commanding 2-0 lead.

Mercer, who had scored a combined 10 goals in his first three seasons for the Highlanders, had not scored through this season’s first three contests. That changed in the 75th minute Friday, when he scored from 10 yards away and in front after receiving a pass from Rickardo Oldham, who passed from outside the box.

NJIT continued to apply pressure and a strong header from Mamadou Guirassy went just over the crossbar in the 79th minute.

In fact, NJIT did not get the equalizer until 33 seconds from time, when Oldham blasted a 25-yard free kick from straight on into the upper left corner. The kick was awarded after Mercer was knocked to the turf on a foul by a Niagara defender.

Oldham very nearly ended the contest in the 92nd minute, but his hard open shot to the far post hit off the frame and play continued, but not for long.

Mercer took a shot that deflected off a defender to Niagara goalkeeper Joel Gerberich, but Gerberich had trouble handling the ball and Mercer was there to head in the loose ball for the game-winner at 92:52.

NJIT had a 16-5 advantage in total shots, including 2-0 in overtime. The shots-on-goal favored the Highlanders 5-3 and the corner kicks were 5-1, NJIT.

Gerberich, Niagara’s sophomore goalkeeper, finished with two saves, while Christian Foust of the Highlanders was not credited with the save. The only save for NJIT was a “team save” credited after freshman Ryan Moore blocked a shot at the goal line for the Highlanders.

Niagara went on top early, taking advantage of a misplay by the Highlander defense in front of its own goal. Ryan Myers got the takeaway for the Purple Eagles and flicked the ball to freshman Koby Sapon-Amoah, who finished for his first college goal at 2:04.

The goal would be Niagara’s only shot of the first half, with NJIT taking eight shots in the first 45 minutes.

The 1-0 advantage held and the visitors took advantage of another momentary defensive lapse to produce their second goal at 54:04. Niagara’s Alex Dimitriu shot three times in a flurry in the goal area. His first shot was the save by the NJIT defender Moore, a second shot was blocked, as well, and then on the third try, Dimitriu knocked in another rebound to give NU its 2-0 lead.

Niagara has had some hard luck in its 0-5 start. The extra time loss at NJIT was immediately preceded by 2-1 extra time defeat last Sunday at Michigan of the Big Ten Conference. And the Purple Eagles opened their schedule with a 1-0 loss to Robert Morris.

NJIT has won its last two after beginning the season 0-2. The Highlanders will host Rhode Island on Wednesday at 7 pm.

LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University field hockey team jumped out to a three-goal lead and held on to defeat La Salle University 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Ben Cohen Field.

“It was a game of two different halves,” said head coach Lori Hussong. “The first half, we played really, really well and the second half not so well. La Salle is a tough team to play against, they never ever quit.”

Junior Kalyn O'Brien (Southampton/Seneca) scored on a rebound 11:27 into the game, her first goal of the season to give Rider (5-1) a 1-0 lead.

Just under seven minutes later, after a La Salle corner play was broken up, junior Carlie Spaeder (Newtown Square, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) took a long pass from sophomore Allison Baligian (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) and after running almost half the field, notched her third goal of the season to give the Broncs a two-goal margin.

“The offense was lively in the opening half and we had some beautiful runs down the field,” Hussong said. “Carlie was the catalyst for that. She used her speed to her advantage and is confident in her stick skills. She is creating a lot of scoring opportunities for us.”

“Allison gave me a good ball up the field,” Spaeder said about her goal. “It was really just a team effort that created the opportunity.”

Playing 69 of 70 minutes, Spaeder had a team-high six shots for Rider.

“We played well in the opening half but didn’t play to our potential in the second half,” Spaeder added. “We are looking to work on playing our very best. La Salle is a really good team and put forth a lot of effort. We just worked together and got the win.”

Eight minutes into the second half, Baligian scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season off a scramble in front of the La Salle goal with Explorer goalie Rachel Hartman making the first save and La Salle’s Megan Kida credited with a defensive save on the second shot before the Broncs put the third shot home.

With 18:40 left in the game, La Salle converted on a penalty corner and the Explorers scored again off a penalty corner with 49 seconds remaining for the final score.

Rider out-shot La Salle (2-3) 23-7 but only 8-4 in the final 35 minutes of play.

Rider held a 9-8 penalty corner advantage with the Explorers holding a 5-4 advantage in the second half.

Rider senior goalie Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) made five saves with Hartman credited with 11 saves for La Salle.

Rider and La Salle last met during the 2014 season when the Explorers scored a 3-2 double overtime victory after coming back from a two-goal deficit. In 2012 the Broncs prevailed 3-2 in overtime, also in Philadelphia. The Broncs defeated La Salle 2-0 in Lawrenceville in 2011. Rider defeated La Salle 4-1 to open the 2010 season in Philadelphia. Rider has won 24 of the 33 games (one tie) in the series against the Explorers including a 2-1 overtime win in Lawrenceville in 2009 and a 2-1 overtime win in 2008 that went to penalty strokes. The Explorers defeated the Broncs 2-1 in double overtime in 2007 with Rider winning a pair of 1-0 games in 2006 and 2005.

“We reminded the players at halftime that La Salle came back on us last season,” Hussong said. “I was hoping for a better performance in the second half, La Salle really had us with our backs to the wall. Kudos to them, they never quit and we had to gut it out.”

Almost 400 fans were in attendance as the Broncs celebrated Alumni Day.

“It is always good to have the alumni come back,” said Hussong. “They are people that we have grown to love over the years and we even had former players come back who played before I came to Rider and that’s great to see. We always want to give them a great performance.”

“We love our alumni,” Spaeder said. I played with some of them and really, everyone is just good friends. We really look up to them and are happy that they were here to support us.”

Rider is 2-0 this season and 38-5 (.884) all-time on Ben Cohen Field, the lighted campus turf field that opened in the Fall of 2010.

The Broncs host Towson University on Friday at 7pm.

FH: Rath’s Goal Lifts Ohio State Past Michigan State, 2-1

Ohio State downs Spartans to win Big Ten opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Caroline Rath picked an opportune time to score her first career goal.

The sophomore from Greenville, Del., a back who is part of the Buckeyes’ stellar defense, provided a decisive contribution of offense on Friday as Ohio State edged Michigan State, 2-1, in the Big Ten field hockey opener for both teams. The Buckeyes, winners of three straight, are 4-2 on the year and 1-0 in the Big Ten. Michigan State, a Top 20 team at the start of the year, is 3-4.

The Buckeyes, which scored two quick goals within the first five minutes of play in last Friday’s win over Ball State, once against struck early. Maddy Humphrey converted on a penalty corner when she took a feed from Emma Royce and found the back of the cage just 3:55 into the contest. For Humphrey, it was the sixth straight game that she’s scored a goal. The sophomore from Virginia Beach, Va. currently leads the team with 14 points.

Approximately nine minutes later, the Spartans got the equalizer from Mallory Tyler, who scored off a short pass in front of the cage from Heather Howie to tie the game at 1-1. The score remained 1-1 until the 32nd minute when Rath opportunistically corralled a bobble off a penalty corner and sent a hard shot past MSU goalie Sierra Patton. The goal was assisted by Royce, who now tied with Morgan Kile for the team lead with three.

In the second half, the Buckeyes’ offense managed just two shots, but its defense, one of the top units in the Big Ten, was up to the task of preserving the lead. Sophomore goalie Liz Tamburro made three of her four saves over the final 35 minutes, including two coming with less than 15 minutes remaining. Michigan State generated six second-half shots, but only three of them were on goal – all saved by Tamburro. The Spartans came into the game averaging over three goals and a game and were held under that by a unit consisting of Tamburro, Royce, Rath, Carolina Vergroesen and Hannah Pany.

In addition to the game-winning goal, Rath also had a key defensive save in the first half. Michigan State ended up outshooting Ohio State 13-7, but less than half of their shots were on goal. Conversely, the Buckeyes took seven shots – five on goal.

Friday’s contest marked the fourth time in the last six meetings that the Buckeyes and Spartans have played in a one-goal game. It’s also Ohio State’s first conference opening win since 2012 (3-2 vs. Northwestern).

The Buckeyes look to extend their winning streak to four games on Sunday when they host in-state rival Ohio beginning at 1 p.m. Admission, as always, is free.

LAWRENCEVILLE—Trailing 2-1 just 21 minutes into the game, the Rider University field hockey team roared back with three unanswered goals, two by sophomore Melissa Cunningham (Oaklyn/Collingswood) in a 4-2, non-conference win over Towson University on Ben Cohen Field Friday evening.

“I think we got off to a very slow start,” said head coach Lori Hussong. “Towson came out strong and put pressure on us. The second half we came out with more energy and had some nice play in the midfield and that created scoring opportunities.”

Senior Rachel Ippolite (Woolwich Twp./Kingsway Regional) scored her second goal of the season, converting a pass from junior Carlota Alsina (Barcelona, Spain) to tie the game 2-2, just 1:54 into the second half.

Coming off an ACL injury from two years ago that is only now allowing her to show her athleticism, Cunningham scored her first goal in almost a year to give Rider (6-1) a 3-2 lead with 17:02 left in the game tipping in a pass from Alsina on a penalty corner.

“Melissa is gaining more confidence and is playing like the player that we knew she would be before the injury,” Hussong said. “She is doing well now but she can still do even better. We are happy things are coming around for her.”

“We all played really intense,” Cunningham said. “We were down in the second half and had to pick it up. Collectively as a team we got it done.”

Just over 10 minutes later, Cunningham again teamed up with Alsina on a penalty corner to give the Broncs an insurance goal with 6:18 remaining in the contest.

“Even though we were down, we told ourselves we needed to play better,” Cunningham said about the adjustment at halftime. “It feels really good to help the offense. I could not have done it without the corners being earned first. We all worked together to get the ball in the cage.”

A member of the preseason All-MAAC team, Alsina tied a career-high with three assists, matching her effort against Towson on September 20, 2013, also on Ben Cohen Field.

“Tonight was one of Carlota’s best games,” Hussong said. “She had energy and wasn’t trying to do too much with the ball. She looked up the field and gave the forwards some nice through passes that they were able to cut on to and attack the goal.”

“The first half was slow and we lacked a little bit of energy,” Alsina said. “Once we tied the game, we went for it and worked together.”

Sophomore goalie Hannah Isaacs (Piscataway) played the final 54 minutes and picked up the win as the Bronc defense was credited with two defensive saves with her between the pipes.

Starting goalie, senior Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) allowed one goal in 15:47 of play.

Rider freshman Jessica Randazzo (Media, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) scored her first career goal, converting from the top of the circle, 10:58 into the game to give the Broncs a 1-0 lead.

Towson (1-6) responded with back to back goals over the next 10 minutes to take a 2-1 lead into intermission.

“I told the team to stop thinking and just play,” Hussong said about the conversation with her squad at the break. “The 50-50 balls were the reason we weren’t doing well in the opening half but once we started moving to the ball, that effort helped the offensive output.”

Rider out-shot the Tigers 24-7 and held a 13-3 penalty corner advantage but Towson goalie Megan Boyle kept the Tigers in the game, making eight saves with the Tiger defense also credited with two defensive saves.

“Corners have not been our strength,” Hussong said. “We’ve taken extra time out of practice to work on the different pieces of the corner plays so that we are more efficient.”

Rider improved to 3-0 this season on Ben Cohen Field and 39-5 (.886) all-time on the lighted campus turf field that opened in the Fall of 2010.

Rider and Towson have met 19 times with the Broncs holding a 14-4-1 advantage. The teams met last season in Maryland, with Rider winning 2-1 for Hussong’s 200th career victory. The teams met on Ben Cohen Field in 2013 when the Broncs won 4-0 in the home opener.

The Broncs hit the road for the next month (five games), beginning with a game in Loretto, Pennsylvania against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday.

“Sunday is going to be a tough game,” Hussong added. “We know they are going to give 100 percent and we are going to have to match that intensity to get the win.”

Rider also faces Colgate, Lock Haven, Drexel and Villanova during the road trip.

The next Bronc home game is October 16 when Rider opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play against Fairfield University.

Ritter Wins Rider Invitational

PENNINGTON, NJ— The Last Hurrah.

For fifth-year senior Emily Ritter (Millsboro, DE/Sussex Tech), this cross country season brings an end to an already brilliant career. “It’s bittersweet,” said Ritter, the 2014-15 Rider female Athlete of the Year who earned All-East honors in all three of her sports; cross country, indoor track and outdoor track & field.

She reached the pinnacle of her career last spring when she finished ninth in the nation at the NCAA Championships in Oregon in the 3,000m steeplechase, earning All-America honors.

This fall could just be icing on the cake, one last season to enjoy the comradery of teammates and the pure joy of competition. Or it could be one last chance to reach the level of success in cross country that she achieved last spring in track, advancing to the NCAA Championships.

“I hoping for a little bit of both,” said Ritter, who placed first of 141 runners at the Rider Invitational at Rosedale Park in Pennington Saturday. “I’m excited to see what I can do this cross country season. I feel after last spring I am competing at a whole new level.”

“Emily did a great job in winning the race,” said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. “She is picking up right where she left off in the spring. I absolutely believe Emily can take her cross country running to the next level, just as she did in track. She has a good chance to finish in the top 25 in the Regional Championships (NCAA qualifiers) at the end of the season.”

“That’s my goal,” said Ritter, who covered the 6,000m Rosedale Park course in 22:08.5. “We sat down at the beginning of the season and wrote down our individual goals and that is my big, long-term goal. So hopefully I can reach that again.”

Ritter has this fifth season to compete because she missed the 2013 cross country season with an injury. “I had an injury that I was a little too stubborn to say anything about and when I tried to run through it, it turned into something more,” Ritter said.

Despite placing three runners in the top eight, the Broncs finished fourth of 10 teams behind Quinnipiac, Monmouth and Marist.

“Having three in the top eight is very exciting,” Hamer said. “We knew we had three really good runners up front.”

Rider senior Nicolette Mateescu (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick), who won the first cross country meet of the season this year, placed third overall (22:21.0). “Niky has grown a lot over the last year and a half and I expected her to be up there today,” Hamer said.

“Niky is on a whole new level now,” Ritter said. “She is my training partner and she kicks my butt every day in practice.”

Junior Megan McGarrity (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil’s Academy) placed third among Broncs, eighth overall (23:12.6). “Meg did a tremendous job moving up halfway through the race,” Hamer said. “She was in the 20s early on so to get up into the top eight is fantastic. She missed the track season with an injury so we were a little concerned where she would pick up. She’s right where she was last year and even better. I’m excited about that.”

The Rider Invitational featured eight of the 11 MAAC teams, and Rosedale Park will be the site of the 2015 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships October 31. “This was like a dry run for the MAAC Championships,” Hamer said. “Iona is the defending conference champion and Marist, Quinnipiac and Monmouth are the teams that are the next contenders. We’re hoping to be up there as well.”

The Broncs are picked to come in fifth in the MAAC Championships this year but the Rider women are currently ranked 10th in the Mid-Atlantic Region, their highest ranking ever.

The Broncs compete again October 2 at Lehigh’s Paul Short Invitational.

For Emily Ritter, it will be another chance to enjoy the thrill of competition, the comradery of her teammates, and to strive toward that ultimate goal, the NCAA Championships.

One Last Hurrah.

NJIT and Manhattan Play 2-2 Draw

NEWARK, NJ—The year of living dangerously continued for NJIT men’s soccer in a 2-2 double overtime tie Sunday afternoon at home against Manhattan on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

The result left NJIT with a 2-3-1 record. But with the visiting Jaspers (0-4-1) scored the game’s first two goals, NJIT has now allowed its opponent on the board first in five of NJIT’s six matches.

Sunday’s contest marked the second time NJIT spotted a visiting team a two-goal lead, forcing the Highlanders to rally late in order to escape a defeat. The first time, on September 11, the Highlanders trailed Niagara 2-0 before storming back with two goals in the last 16:08 of regulation and then the winner in overtime.

On Sunday, Manhattan got an unassisted goal in the 36th minute from senior Abraham Bartoah and another goal in the 61st minute off the foot of freshman Adam Weisberger, whose 25-yard floater on a direct free kick found its way into the net, giving the Jaspers a 2-0 lead.

NJIT came back on two late headers in the span of just more than three minutes. Highlander freshman Ryan Moore, a couple of strides away from the visitors bench area, sent a long head-high ball into the goal area, where NJIT’s 6-foot-4 senior captain Jimmy Myers got his head on it, redirecting the ball slightly to beat Manhattan goalkeeper RJ Noll at the 71:16 mark.

Another Highlander senior, Joshua Mercer, tied the score on his team-leading third goal in the 75th minute. Ricardo Oldham sent a precision cross into the box and Mercer flicked it on into the back of the net from 10 yards out.

NJIT had all the shots in overtime (five) and put three on frame, but the 2-2 tie held until the final whistle.

Manhattan had a 15-11 edge in shots during regulation time, but the five overtime shots by NJIT inched the Highlanders ahead in that category, 16-15.

Noll, the freshman goalkeeper for Manhattan, went the distance and finished with eight saves in 110 minutes.

NJIT’s starting goalkeeper Christian Foust made three saves and was pulled after allowing the second Manhattan goal early in the 61st minute.

Junior Marco Luna came on for Foust and made one save in keeping the Jaspers off the board for the remaining 49:53. It was the first game action as a Highlander for Luna, who played two seasons at Hendrix College in Arkansas before enrolling at NJIT in the fall of 2014.

Bartoah’s opening goal for Manhattan, the only one in the first half, was the result of a fine individual effort, as he made a run down the right flank and carried the ball deep before scoring from a difficult angle, firing the ball from right to left across the goal area and into the net inside the far post.

The visitors barely missed a score minutes earlier, when Weisberger’s try in the 33rd minute struck the post.

NJIT had its own near-misses, including a pair of shots in the 58th minute with the Highlanders down a goal. Mercer attempted to score on a bicycle kick from close range, but Manhattan’s Noll deflected it away. Juan Gomez controlled the rebound for the Highlanders, but his shot skimmed over the crossbar.

NJIT, which has played its last three games at home, will go on the road for its next three, beginning Wednesday night at Rider in a 7 pm start.

LORETTO, Pa.—The Rider University field hockey team lost for just the second time this season, falling 3-0 at Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game.

“It wasn’t our day today,” said head coach Lori Hussong. “We opened up the game very flat and Saint Francis came right down and scored. I don’t think we gave out best effort.”

The Red Flash jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 37 seconds into the game, breaking through the Bronc defense and converting a shot from the top of the circle.

Saint Francis (4-3) made it 2-0 with 5:30 left before intermission after a scrum in front ended with a loose ball in the back of the cage.

The Red Flash scored on a rebound with just over 15 minutes left in the game for the final score.

Rider (6-2) sophomore Hannah Isaacs (Piscataway) made her first start of the season in goal and played the opening 29:30, making three saves, while allowing two goals.

Senior goalie Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) played the final 40:30, making two saves.

Despite holding an 11-7 penalty corner advantage over the Red Flash, Rider was out-shot 12-11.

“We had a lot of scoring opportunities, especially in the first half but couldn’t get it going,” Hussong said. “It’s hard to play from behind. Saint Francis is a very good team.”

The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for Rider.

“The defense did not play well today,” Hussong added. “Saint Francis was very skilled and aggressive and they played better than we did.”

This was Rider’s second loss to the Red Flash in 17 games. Former conference rivals in the Northeast Conference, Rider and Saint Francis (Pa.) last met in 2014 when the Red Flash won for the first time in the series, scoring a 3-2 overtime victory on Ben Cohen Field.

Rider travels to Colgate on Sunday, September 27.

FH: Rath Selected As B1G Co-Defensive Player of the Week

Sophomore had a goal, assist and defensive save last weekend

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore back Caroline Rath has been named the Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. It is the second time in three weeks that the Defensive Player of the Week has been a Buckeye –goalkeeper Liz Tamburro won the award on Sept. 8. Last week, Peanut Johnson was the Offensive Player of the Week.

Rath played a key role – both offensively and defensively – in two Buckeye wins last weekend. On Friday against Michigan State, she scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 triumph over the Spartans and also added a defensive save. Rath and the rest of the Ohio State defense held Michigan State scoreless for the final 57:34 of the contest.

Less than 48 hours later against Ohio, Rath assisted on a penalty corner goal by Emma Royce that tied the score at 2-2 four and a half minutes into the second half. Ohio State would go on to win the game, 3-2, thanks in large part to a defense that gave up just one shot in the second half and held the Bobcats scoreless for 41:05.

Keyed by Rath, along with Tamburro, Carolina Vergroesen, Hannah Pany and Royce, the Buckeye defense is allowing just 9.6 shots and 1.57 goals per game. In the Big Ten, the unit is ranked second in goals allowed (11), third in in goals-against average (1.57) and tied for first in shutouts (two).

Ohio State, winners of four straight, is back in action tomorrow when it travels to Oxford to take on Miami University at 5 p.m.

Rider’s Ritter Honored by MAAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Rider University senior Emily Ritter was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Cross Country Runner of the Week for all competition September 14-20.

“Emily is very excited right now and she is working hard to take her performance to the next level,” said Rider cross country head coach Bob Hamer. “She is very fit and her races are indicative of her fitness.”

Running in her first event of the season, Ritter (Millsboro, Delaware/Sussex Tech) finished first of 140 runners at the Rider Invitational.

The Invitational consisted of 10 teams, including eight MAAC teams.

Ritter covered the 6,000 meter Rosedale Park course in 22:33 to win the event.

Ritter was the Rider female Athlete of the Year in 2014-15 when she earned All-East honors in all three of her sports, cross country, indoor track and outdoor track & field. In the spring she earned All-America honors when she placed ninth at the NCAA Championships in the 3,000m steeplechase.

“Emily has picked up right where she left off last year,” Hamer said.

Ritter and the Broncs will run again October 2 at Lehigh’s Paul Short Invitational.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa.—The Lady Eagles of Lock Haven took advantage of a penalty stroke 1:55 into the second overtime to break a 1-1 tie and defeat Rider University in a non-conference field hockey game Friday evening.

“I was happy that we hustled, played hard and hung in there with them,” head coach Lori Hussong said. “The game was a really good game. It was a tough call on the penalty stroke but we had our chances to score in overtime and didn’t cash in on them. A penalty corner opportunity, especially in overtime should be lights out.”

Trailing 1-0, freshman Jessica Randazzo (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) scored her second goal of the season, crossing inside the circle and putting the ball just inside the far post, off a pass from sophomore Allison Balligian (Flemington/Hunterdon Central), five minutes into the second half for the only Bronc goal of the evening.

“The goal by Jessica was a patient play,” said Hussong. “She was able to cash in on it and that was good to see. Being down a goal at the half and coming back on the road to tie the game, that’s good for our confidence.”

Balligian is Rider’s leading scorer with 17 points, including eight goals and tonight’s assist.

Lock Haven (10-2) opened the scoring 23 minutes into the game after a long pass was deflected past senior goalie Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) with the Broncs playing a player down due to a two-minute green card penalty.

Lock Haven out-shot Rider (7-3) 19-7 with Prettyman making eight saves.

“This was the best game of Joelle’s season,” Hussong said. “She was alive, aggressive and made some really good saves for us.”

The Lady Eagles held a 9-8 penalty corner advantage.

Rider and Lock Haven are former Northeast Conference rivals. The Lady Eagles, who now play in the Atlantic 10, lead the all-time series 10-4. The teams met last season with Rider winning 2-1 on a game-winner by Balligian. LHU defeated Rider 1-0 in 2013. In 2006 Lock Haven beat Rider in the NEC semifinals. In 2007 and 2008 Lock Haven defeated Rider in the NEC Title Game.

Rider travels to Drexel University on Sunday.

“We expect the same type of game on Sunday,” Hussong added. “That’s why we scheduled these games back to back and so close to the start of the conference season. You want to see the best competition that you can. It’s going to be a close game and we will try to come out with a better result.”

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Drexel University jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 18 minutes, defeating Rider University 4-2 in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon at Buckley Field.

“We had a couple of key defensive errors in the beginning of the game,” said head coach Lori Hussong. “I think that we played pretty even up besides those plays. Drexel is a very good team and very skilled and they move the ball nicely on the field.”

Trailing 2-0, junior Kalyn O'Brien (Southampton/Seneca) scored her second of the season, converting a long pass from freshman Christine van Egmond (Heemstede, Netherlands) to cut the Bronc deficit to 2-1, 20 minutes into the game.

Drexel responded with two goals in the opening 4:59 of the second half.

“When a team gets off to a fast start, that’s the team that will play more relaxed,” Hussong added. “We did cut it down to one goal but giving up the goals early in the second half; that took the wind out of our sails and that made it very difficult to climb back from the deficit.”

Junior Carlie Spaeder (Newtown Square, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) cut the Dragon lead to 4-2 with a shot from the left side of the circle for the final score, recording her fifth goal of the season with 14:39 left.

Senior goalie Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) made five saves.

Drexel out-shot the Broncs 15-9 and the Dragons held a 4-1 penalty corner advantage.

Rider has won 11 of the 23 games all-time against Drexel with two games ending in a tie. Drexel defeated the Broncs 4-0 last season, 2-1 in 2013 and 3-0 in the 2012 season opener. Rider last defeated Drexel in 1995.

Rider (7-4) travels to Villanova University for a non-conference game on October 11.

Rider’s Ritter MAAC Runner of Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Senior Emily Ritter of the Rider University cross country team has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Runner of the Week for all competition the first week of October.

Ritter (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Tech) ran in the Gold Race at the Paul Short Run Friday and finished 16th among 312 runners, covering the 6,000 meter course in 20:59.

“Emily ran an outstanding race at Paul Short,” said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. “She was tripped and fell early in the race, but she recovered nicely.”

Ritter has run in two races this fall and both times she earned MAAC Runner of the Week honors. “I am very excited about her progress so far this year and she is on track to have a great season,” Hamer said.

Ritter was an All-East and All-MAAC harrier last fall and earned All-America honors in the spring, finishing ninth in the nation in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Ritter competes in the Princeton Invitational October 17. Princeton is also the site of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Meet November 13.
