The weather looks great at lunch time in New Castle County, but the forecast calls for storms possible during the games. Downstate the rains aren't expected until after the games should be completed.
Cape (7-1) @ Dover (9-2). GAME OF THE DAY. Big game with possibly the Henlopen North on the line. Well not directly I suppose, just looking to hype it up. But Cape is 6-0 in the conference (up a half game on Smyrna 5-0) and Dover is 6-2 in the conference. Smyrna has already beaten Dover, so Cape needs to stay pace to setup a winner takes all with Smyrna last game of the season. Meanwhile, Dover has hopes of having something to say about things. They are 6-2 in the conference and keeping its fingers crossed that with some help they could still have a shot at the conference title. Either way, unless either team collapses from here on out, they both should have a very good chance of making the playoffs. Cape is on a 4 game winning streak. They have an unfinished game with Sallies to play still. Cape’s only loss so far was a 2-1 game against Caravel. Dover has been pretty dominant in all their wins with the exception of a 3-1 win over Poly. Dover lost to Smyrna 3-2 and Sussex Tech 5-3. Dover beat Cape 9-5 last year and 10-3 the year before.
Appo (8-3) @ DMA (8-3). Appo was riding a 5 game winning streak, including a win over top ranked ST Marks, but then faltered against Mtown losing 7-1. The game wasn’t as bad as the score lets on though, it was a 1-1 game before a grand slam blew it open at the end. I feel like Appo isn’t firing on all cylinders quite yet. Their pitching isn’t dominant and their bats have been light the last three games. But this all could be very scary for other teams considering most of the parts are all here from last year (maybe more with the depth). DMA is coming off a disappointing 5-3 loss to Wm penn last week. DMA has played really well. Their other two losses were by 1 run to Mtown (a game they were up 8-1) and to Conrad 4-2. They have some impressive wins as well beating Glasgow(5-2), Wilm Chr (10-0), Newark (10-0) and Newark Charter (9-2). Both teams are probably a lock for the playoffs, but this is a game both would like to get a win to better their positioning.
Poly (7-2) @ CR (5-5). Still trying to figure Poly out. 23-12 game with IR to start??? Ok, I will let that go. They bury a pretty good Lake team 11-1. Lose a close game 3-1 to Dover. No problem. Blow out of two decent teams; Glasgow and Milford. Poly then goes up 5-0 on Central, but barely holds on to win 8-7. I’m a big Poly fan still, but then they get beat up pretty good by Archmere 9-1. ???? Poly came back and destroyed Wood 17-0 after that. All that being said, I think Poly is a good team. Not sure about top ten yet but that will all be told if they handle their business heading into upcoming matchups with Cape on Thursday and Smyrna next week. CR was staying under the radar with a 4 game winning streak and a 5-3 record, but they ran into Cape and Dover last week, losing by a combined 19-6. Things don’t get any easier after Poly; they have Smyrna, Arch, Delmar, Mtown and Lake. Sink or swim. We will see. CR beat Poly 9-5 last year.
Newark (5-5) @ Caravel (7-3). Newark is struggling to find itself this year. This was expected to be a down year, but they got a win over Tech (5-4) and lost a close one to Mtown which made us think they might actually be pretty decent. But they get blown out 13-1 to a struggling WmPenn team. Blowout Charter, then get 10-run by DMA. Most recently they got smacked around by Smyrna 11-2 Saturday. Caravel is playing its last in state game for awhile, taking their game on the road so to speak playing 5 of their last 7 against out of state teams. Caravel was slow to get the bats moving early on, but have been averaging over 7 runs per game in its last three games against IR, Smyrna and Newark Charter. Their pitching has been very good as expected.
Wilm Christian (5-4) @ Tower Hill (3-5). Tower Hill is far from its 15-3 team from 2015. TH has played okay against decent competition losing 5-4 to Milford, 5-3 to DMA and 5-2 against Tatnall and a nice 7-1 win against Friends. WC has won 3 of its last 4 over McKean, Friends and DEPPS. This should be a good game of equals.
Tatnall (6-3) @ St E (5-5). Tatnall has won 6 of its last 7 games, including a 4-3 win already over St E in the Tiger Classic championship game. This game was back and forth, so I would expect another repeat of that game. But with St E, who knows.
Mt P (4-5) @ Conrad (9-2). Mt P after coming off 3 straight wins got beat up last night by Sallies 11-1. Conrad has jumped into my top ten after winning 4 of its last five games, beating Arch & DMA but losing big to St Marks. Conrad beat Mt P 12-4 last year.
Mckean (3-5) @ RLCA (8-0). RLCA continues its assault on the states bottom half. Its next victim could be McKean. McKean got its second win of the season last Friday over Delmarva Christian 5-0. But has been basically ten runned in all its other games. RLCA is playing well and has good pitching. Could match their 2015 win total of nine, but McKean beat RLCA last year 4-2.
St Thomas More (1-3) @ Lake (7-3). St Thomas More has only played half the amount of games that everyone else has played. They did ten run McKean, but lost to Wood 23-0 in their last game 4/16. They also got 10-run by Delmar and got beat 9-0 by St Andrews. I think Lake gets another tune up today and again on Thursday against Laurel as they prepare for Smyrna and Sallies next week.
Concord (3-7) @ St Georges (6-1). Concord has three wins against decent teams (CR, Archmere & Hodgson) but has losses to Charter, A.I., Friends and Newark. Concord’s worst loss was 4-0 to both Conrad and Mtown. Concord has played close games, I don’t think they are a team to overlook. St G is clearly a better team and is ranked in the top 10 after wins over Mtown and Glasgow.
Wood (3-6) @ Smyrna (7-2). Wood had some people excited at 2-0, but the train has derailed for the most part with 6 losses in its last 7 games. Smyrna has lost 2 of its last 4, but they were games to Mtown and Caravel. Smyrna is playing well and should steamroll Wood, especially the way Wood has been playing.
Tech (6-4) @ Seaford (0-8). Tech still isn’t a superpower yet, but has won 4 straight games to get back on track beating Dover, Milford, WP, Laurel. I would expect if they are back on track this should be a relatively easy one before their big matchup Wednesday against Sallies.
Glasgow (5-3) @ Sanford (0-9). Glasgow has won 3 of its last 4 and has a legit shot of making the playoffs if they keep winning games they should, like this one.
