Highest seed to win?

A #9 seed is definitely not the highest seed to win it all & I think Sallies was more like a #6 seed that year they won it all even at 10-10.

Since 2007, St E's this year as a #9 seed is the highest, next was 2015 Sallies as a 6 and last year Smyrna as a 5. But I couldn't find anything before that.

Speaking in terms of “ever” they wouldn’t be...I don’t remember what seed Seaford was back in ‘97 but they didn’t even win the Henlopen South that year & ended up making a strong run to the Chip...even had one of their best players suspended for the game & still won it.

I’d be curious to know what seed Middletown was the first year that they won it in their back-to-back years in the early 2000s too when they had Mike Shipman running the show.

As long as the guy last named Matthews, they were fine

I remember '97 well. I was a sophomore at Howard (student, never a ballplayer lol) and that team was actually better than the '96 squad that won it all. Everybody in school was looking forward to either Newark or Hodgson in the title game. Totally overlooked Seaford and Andre Matthews put on a SHOW. Terrell Drummond, the kid who got suspended for an altercation late in the game, was ballin' too.

That must have been the semis vs Howard that year then where Drummond got ejected, suspended for the Chip & Seaford still went on to beat Newark in the Chip that year...Drummond was probably their leading scorer. Matthews was more than capable of getting his then even as a sophomore though.

I was at the semis...when the young man from Seaford and the young man from Howard got tossed. Of course, the Howard player ( was it Allen? ) wasn't going to play in the title game because his team lost the semifinal game. The Seaford player (was it Drummond ?) couldn't play in the championship but his team upset Newark in the finals.

It was Stewart from Howard, Ches. I was doing video for Howard back then and I remember those two jawing and then having a shoving match before the refs hopped in.

Matthews was the leading scorer. Best in the state by my observation. He destroyed Lloyd Price's Hodgson team during the regular season. ANDRE MATTHEWS "BERNARD KING"

They didn’t really “upset” Newark in the finals. They had beaten Newark in the regular season 92-76, at Newark.

Neither should have been tossed. There was less than a minute left and Seaford had it won. They didn’t even grab each other, they just jumped up, got kind of chest to chest and jawed at each other.

I think Seaford was still in the Henlopen North then. Their enrollment really started to decline a few years later when DuPont left town. Then they moved down to Henlopen South.

Correct...Aaron Matthews left Seaford after his freshman year, went to prep school then on to Villanova for a few years before transferring to Del State to finish out playing alongside of his younger brother Andre but he never played w/ him at Seaford.

I was at DSU the same time Aaron and Andre were there and how that team didn't win the MEAC in '03 is still a mystery to me...aside from Gail Goodrich's kid punching Miles Davis in the family jewels.

I agree. Neither player should have been tossed from that game. It was an overreaction on the part of the officials.
