Delaware State Head Coach Eric Skeeters (Coppin State, ‘97): 5-21 at DSU and career (first season);
2-11 in MEAC regular season; 0-0 vs. MSU


THE GAME Delaware State (5-21; 2-11 MEAC) begins its final homestand of the season with a visit to Memorial Hall by Morgan State. The Hornets are coming off a 70-60 win over Coppin State last Monday. Kevin Larkin (gr.) led three double-figure scorer for the Hornets with 16 points and topped all players with a career-high 18 rebounds to give him a team-leading 10 double-doubles this season. Jonathan Mitchell (sr.) came off the bench to add 15 points (6-11 FGs) in the Coppin State contest, while D’Marco Baucum (fr.) contributed 11 points to the win. Larkin is the Hornets’ leader and fourth in the MEAC in scoring at 16.4 points per game. He’s also the MEAC’s second-leading rebounder at 9.1 per game. Larkin also holds the MEAC single-game scoring high this season with his 40-point performance vs. Cairn on Dec. 3. DSU Point guard Pinky Wiley (sr.) is second on the Hornets in scoring at 10.2 points per game. Wiley is also the MEAC’s steals leader (2.1 pg) and is fifth in the conference in assists at 4.3 per game.

Morgan State (8-10; 3-10 MEAC) brings a six-game losing streak into the contest. The Bears are coming off a 75-69 home loss to Howard in their last contest on Feb. 25. MSU led 36-27 at the half, but was outscored 48-33 in the final 20 minutes. David Syfax was MSU’s high scorer in the contest with 18 points. He also grabbed 10 rebounds in the game. Stanley Davis is the team leader and No. 15 in the MEAC in scoring at 12.4 points per game. He’s also seventh in the league in rebounding at 6.9 per contest.

HORNETS vs. Bears Series History (MSU leads 56-43) This is the only scheduled meeting between the Hornets and Bears this season. The teams split two meetings last season, with each winning on its home court. Morgan State won the first 2017-18 contest 61-47, while the DSU retuned the favor with an 87-80 victory in the regular season finale. The Hornets and Bears have split their last four meetings. Morgan State holds a 56-43 lead in the series.

DeIaware State Head Coach David Caputo (Montclair State, ‘05): 5-19 at DSU; 141-78 career (9th yr.); 3-10 MEAC regular season; 0-0 vs. MSUThe GameDelaware State (5-19; 3-10 MEAC) takes on long-time rival Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest. The Lady Hornets are trying to rebound from an 85-59 loss to Coppin State last Monday in their most recent outing. DSU is currently 10th in the MEAC standings, a-half behind ninth place Savannah State (4-10). Lanayjha Ashe (jr.) led DSU with 20 points and six assists in the Coppin State contest. Yazmin Batch added 11 a career-high 11 points, while Shonny Regalado (fr.) came off the bench to tally 10 points, tying her career high. NaJai Pollard (sr.) is Delaware State’s top scorer, averaging a MEAC-high 22.6 points per game, which is eighth among all NCAA Div. I players. She’s also second in the MEAC in rebounding at 10.6 per contest. Pollard is DSU’s all-time leading scorer with 1,890 career points and No. 2 in team history with 1000 rebounds, making her the second player in Lady Hornets’ history with at 1000 points and 1000 rebounds. She’s also DSU’s career leader with 199 blocks. Pollard is a five-time MEAC Player-of-the-Week and a defensive player-of-the-week award recipient this season. Lanayjha Ashe (jr.) is second on the Lady Hornets and 13th in the MEAC in scoring at 12.9 points per game.

Morgan State (8-18; 6-7 MEAC), currently seventh in the MEAC standings, brings a three-game losing streak into the contest. The Bears are coming off a 74-62 home loss to Howard last Monday. Adre’onia Coleman led Morgan State with 20 points and eight rebounds, Jihayah Chavis added 17 points. Coleman is tops on the Bears and fourth in the MEAC in scoring at 16.7 points per game. She’s also sixth in the MEAC in rebounding at 8.1 per game. Ashia McCalla is second on the team in scoring at 9.4 points per game.


The Series (DSU leads 40-37) This is the only scheduled meeting between the teams this season. Delaware State swept two 2017-18 contests, winning 62-54 at Morgan State and 60-56 in Memorial Hall. In the first 2017-18 meeting, Ashe led the Lady Hornets with 17 points, while Pollard contributed 15 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks in the win. In the second 2017-18 contest, Pollard led all players with 23 points and nine rebounds. The Lady Hornets have won the last two meetings to open up a 40-37 series lead.

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University men’s basketball team dropped its regular season finale, 92-85, at crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom on Saturday inside the Joseph West Jones Center.

With the loss, the Wildcats (12-16, 9-10 CACC) secured the fourth seed from the South Division for the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament. The Wildcats will head to the North Division Regular Season winner Bloomfield on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats couldn’t overcome the 13-point difference from the free throw line on Saturday, despite going 12-of-29 from beyond the three-point arc and out-rebounding the Lightning (14-14, 12-7 CACC), 41-30, for the game.

Goldey-Beacom turned a 5-4 early deficit into a 12-5 lead in the first half and another 8-0 run put the home team up, 20-7, midway through the first half. Thomas Farrior converted an old-fashioned three-point play to bring the Wildcats to within 29-24, and Alvin West hit his third three-pointer of the first half to get within 31-27. Jermaine Head hit a three and followed it up with two from the foul line to bring the Wildcats to within 41-38, but Corey Taite hit a jumper with five seconds left to send the home team into the halftime break leading, 43-38.

Thomas Farrior tied the game early in the second half with a three-pointer, 45-45, but the Lightning then ran off a 12-3 run to take a 57-48 lead with 13:27 left in regulation. But back came the Wildcats, as Jordan Harding hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 60-58, and Danny Walsh again had the Wildcats to within two at 62-60 with 8:33 showing on the clock. But the Lightning answered with a 7-0 run of their own, reopening a 69-60 lead with 6:55 to play.

Back came the Wildcats however, as Farrior converted an old-fashioned three-point play followed by a Jermaine Head layup. Ed Henderson then hit a three-pointer to bring the Wildcats back to within 69-68 with 5:33 on the clock. That started a string of six consecutive made three-points combined by both teams, with Corey Taite’s latest giving the Lighting a 78-74 lead with 2:58 left.

Jermaine Head hit another three to get within three points but Corey Taite hit both from the foul line to keep the Wildcats at bay. Every time the Wildcats scored down the stretch, the Lightning came up with a big bucket at the other end, answering the call. Jermaine Head put in a layup, 88-85, with17 second left, but Goldey’s Corey Taite hit two from the line and the Wildcats couldn’t answer. Marcellus Livingston iced the game for the Lightning with a dunk late.

Goldey-Beacom went 26-of-29 from the foul line for the game as compared to the Wildcats’ 13-of-16. Corey Taite went a perfect 13-for-13 himself.

Jermaine Head led the Wildcats with 26 points, adding 10 rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Thomas Farrior scored 21 points and led the game with 14 rebounds. Alvin West came off the bench and hit four three-pointers for 12 points. Jordan Harding and Danny Walsh added 10 points each.

The CACC Tournament Quarterfinal game is set for Tuesday night at Bloomfield. The opening tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

NEWARK, Del. – Hofstra shot 60 percent from the field and put five players in double figures as the Pride never trailed in a 92-70 victory over Delaware in the Blue Hens’ Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.


Justin Wright-Foreman led Hofstra (25-6, 15-3 CAA) with 28 points, Eli Pemberton chipped in with 20 points, and Jacquil Taylor notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.


Ithiel Horton paced Delaware (16-15, 8-10 CAA) with 26 points and knocked down six three-pointers on the day. Eric Carter added 15 points and a team-leading six rebounds during his final appearance in the BCC, while Kevin Anderson returned to the court to finish with seven points and six assists.


Delaware shot 48.2 percent from the floor, but went just 6 of 12 from the foul line and was out-rebounded by the Pride, 35-22.


The Blue Hens have earned the fifth seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament, and will take on fourth-seeded William & Mary in the quarterfinals next Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the North Charleston Coliseum.


The game was tied 7-7 in the opening five minutes, but Hofstra used an 11-1 run to go up double digits and led by at least eight the rest of the half before taking a 44-31 advantage into the break.


Delaware shot 57.1 percent in the second half, but never got closer than eight due to Hofstra’s 65.5 percent shooting during the stanza.

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - - Playing in its home gym, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference top seed and North Division No. 1 seed Bloomfield was too much to handle for the South Division’s No. 4 seed Wilmington University men’s basketball team, 105-86, in the First Round of the CACC Tournament on Tuesday night.

The Bears (20-9) won the advantage on the boards, 55-28, including 17 offensive rebounds, leading to a 48-28 difference in the paint on Tuesday night. The Bears shot 51.8 percent for the game while the Wildcats (12-17) shot 42.9 percent.

Bloomfield got out to a large lead in the first half, as the Wildcats struggled to settle in and make shot. Jermaine Head hit a three-pointer to bring the Wildcats to within 6-5 early on, but the Bears rattled off 13 straight, including back-to-back three-pointers to cap the run, 19-5.

Another 9-0 spurt put the home team up 28-10 with 10:28 to play in the half, before the Bears took their largest lead of the half, 35-13, with 7:40 showing on the clock before the break.

The Wildcats answered with an 11-4 run, as Jermaine Head converted an old fashioned three-point play, to bring the Wildcats back to within 39-24, and used another 7-0 spurt to close the gap to within 43-31, with 2:44 to play. But the Bears finished the half on a 9-2 run, taking a 52-33 lead into the break.

The Wildcats scored the first five points of the second half, but every time the visitors would score back-to-back buckets and be on the verge of making a run, the Bears had an answer and would regain a 20-point lead.

Ed Henderson II brought the Wildcats to within 65-50 with 15:09 to play, but a Bears’ dunk and three-pointer squashed any Wildcat momentum and reopened a 70-50 Bears lead.

Jordan Harding made back-to-back three-pointers to get to within 81-65, but again the Bears answered with a three-pointer at the other end, and a 7-0 run to reopen an 88-65 lead.

Bloomfield first took its largest lead of the night, 96-69, with 6:07 left in regulation before settling on the final score, 105-86.

Jermaine Head set a new career best with 34 points on 11-of-19 shooting, hitting five three-pointers. He also added four rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Thomas Farrior and Danny Walsh added 15 points each while Jordan Harding chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.

With the win, Bloomfield advances to the CACC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday and will square off against S#2 Goldey-Beacom at 12:00 p.m.

oldey-Beacom Basketball Teams Headed to CACC Championship Weekend


Goldey-Beacom will see both of its basketball teams on display during championship weekend of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament.


The men’s team (15-14, 12-7 CACC) will be the first to take the court, facing Bloomfield in the semifinals on Saturday at noon. The winner gets the survivor of the semifinal between Jefferson and Dominican (NY) in the final on Sunday at noon.


The women’s squad (14-15, 9-10) also is in the semifinals and will play 23rd-ranked Jefferson after 7:00 pm. The winner gets either fourth-ranked University of the Sciences or Georgian Court in the final on Sunday at 2:30 pm


The semifinals and the finals will take place on the campus of Caldwell University in Caldwell, NJ. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for senior and students and free for children under age 3. No complimentary tickets are available.


The men’s unit is in the semifinals for a second straight year, thanks to Tuesday’s 86-78 home triumph over Caldwell in the quarterfinals. Senior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) matched his career high with 40 points, shot 9-of-16 from the floor and went 16-for-16 from the line. Senior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) had 12 points and six rebounds with sophomore Tevin Service (Union, NJ) netting 12 points. Sophomore Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) hauled in a game-high seven rebounds.


Taite again has been a major force at guard in being picked first team All-CACC a second straight season, one year after being named CACC Player of the Year and first team All-East Region by the CCA and NABC. He enters the weekend having hit 45 consecutive free throws, is 40th in the nation with 20.7 points per game, 12th with a .902 free throw percentage, 20th with 156 free throws and 64th with 1.85 steals per contest.


Livingston also has been a key player at guard with his incredible shooting. He is 13th in the league with 15.1 points per game, sixth with a .400 three-point percentage, 28th with 5.1 rebounds per contest and 41st with a .427 field goal percentage.


Senior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) also has been a major player in the Lightning’s success. He is 19th in the CACC with 13.7 points per game, 14th with 151 field goals, 24th with a .465 field goal percentage and 28th with 36 three-pointers.


Goldey-Beacom’s first three games this season (Bentley, Saint Anselm and Saint Thomas Aquinas) were against teams who at some point this season have been nationally ranked. It enters the weekend having won seven of its last 10 contests.


The women’s team moved forward with Tuesday’s 75-60 upset of North Division champion Dominican (NY). Junior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) went off for a career-best 30 points in addition to getting seven rebounds and three 3-pointers. Sophomore Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE/St. Elizabeth’s) had 13 points and 11 rebounds with senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) adding 13 points for the Lightning, who outscored the Chargers 19-5 in the fourth quarter.


The women’s team has been paced by the incredible play of McGrogan, who has done it all at guard and was named second team All-CACC. She is 49th in the nation with 17.8 points per game, 15th with 142 free throws, 73rd with 4.0 assists per contest and 84th with a 1.59 assist-to-turnover ratio. McGrogan has scored in double figures 23 times this season and notched four double-doubles.


Turner-Rush continues to be one of the vital members of the program with her incredible leadership skills and all-around solid competitiveness. She is 38th in the nation with 35.75 minutes per game, 40th in the league with 10.2 points per contest, 13th with 53 three-pointers, 28th with a .310 three-point percentage and 31st with 109 field goals.


Speaks also has been a key player with her shooting and inside play. She is 35th in the league with 10.6 points per game, third with 8.0 rebounds per contest, 13th with 33.3 minutes per game and 41st with a .356 shooting percentage.


Goldey-Beacom enters the weekend win victories in five of its last nine contests.

The Game Delaware State (5-23; 2-13 MEAC) closes out the 2018-19 regular season with a visit to MEAC rival Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Hornets have dropped their last two games, including a 74-66 setback to MEAC regular season champ Norfolk State on Monday. Jonathan Mitchell (sr.) was high scorer for the Hornets with 14 points and led the team with eight rebounds in the last contest. Ameer Bennett (so.) and Kevin Larkin (gr.) added 12 points each, while Pinky Wiley tallied eight points and a game-high eight assists in the Norfolk State contest. Larkin is the Hornets’ leader and fourth in the MEAC in scoring at 16.0 points per game. He’s also the MEAC’s second-leading rebounder at 8.8 per game. Larkin also holds the MEAC single-game scoring high this season with his 40-point performance vs. Cairn on Dec. 3. DSU forward Saliek Edwards (sr.) is second on the Hornets in scoring at 10.3 points per game. Wiley is the MEAC’s steals leader (2.1 pg) and is fifth in the conference in assists at 4.3 per game.

Maryland-Eastern Shore (6-24; 4-11 MEAC) brings a two-game win streak into the contest. The Hawks are coming off a 78-73 win over Morgan State on Monday. Six MDES players scored in double-figures in the game, led by Bryan Urrutia’s 18. Ryan Andino is the Hawks’ leading scorer this season at 10.4 points per game.

HORNETS vs. Hawks Series History (DSU leads 55-53) This is the second meeting between the Hornets and Hawks this season. MDES won the first contest 62-56 on Feb. 23 in Dover, Del., its fourth consecutive win in the series. Delaware State led 28-24 at the half, but was outscored 38-28 in the final 20 minutes. Isaac Taylor led three MDES double-figure scorers with 18 points in the first meeting between the teams. Edwards was the top scorer for the Hornets with 23 points, highlighted by a career-best seven three-point field goals. Larkin added 19 points and a team-high eight rebounds in the first meeting.

Boiling Springs, N.C. (Mar. 6, 2019) --- Delaware State scored the first goal of the game before allowing the next 14 in a 19-2 loss to Gardner-Webb in a women’s lacrosse contest on Wednesday.


Elish Gately and Abby Hanscom scored three goals each, while Jada Preston recorded two goals and eight assists for a game-high 10 points to lead the Bulldogs.


The Hornets got off a fast start when Tamrin Swann scored on a free position shot just 12 seconds into the contest.


Gardner Webb answered with a goal by Jessica Vetter 23 seconds later to tie the score. Preston scored back-to-back goals by the Bulldogs over the next three minutes to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.


Gardner than ran off 11 more goals in the first half, including three by Hanscom, to lead 14-1 at the break.


Delaware State broke the Bulldog’s run on Aniya Aiken’s first career goal just one-minute-25 seconds into the second period.


The Bulldogs scored the last five goals of the period to close out the scoring.


The Hornets were outshot 32-4 in the game, including 21-3 in the first period.


Delaware State wraps up this two-game road swing at Presbyterian on Friday. The match starts at 1:00 p.m. in Clinton, S.C.


The next DSU home contest is March 15 vs. Howard (1:00 p.m.).

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – Ithiel Horton and Ryan Allen took over during the second half as Delaware rallied back from a 14-point halftime deficit to post a thrilling 85-79 comeback win over William & Mary in the CAA Tournament Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon at the North Charleston Coliseum.


Delaware (17-15) advances to the tournament semifinals vs. top-seeded Hofstra Monday night at 6 p.m. in a game that will be televised nationally by CBS Sports Network.


Horton finished with 26 points and knocked down six three-pointers while Allen added 23 points, all but two in the second half, and four triples to spark the largest comeback from a halftime deficit in CAA Tournament history.


Kevin Anderson contributed 15 points on the day, while Eric Carter posted his 13th double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 rebounds.


Justin Pierce paced William & Mary (14-17) with 26 points, while Nathan Knight chipped in 21 points and 11 boards.


Delaware shot 52.7 percent from the field, including 14 of 24 from three-point range. The Tribe shot a blistering 69.2 percent in the opening half, but was limited to only 30.8 percent shooting in the second period.


William & Mary used an early 10-point run to take a 12-3 lead four and a half minutes into the game, and led comfortably for the rest of the stanza before taking a 45-31 advantage into the break.


Consecutive three-pointers by Horton made it a 58-52 game with 12:14 remaining, but the Tribe extended the lead back to 65-56 with 9:55 to play. Delaware then exploded for a 12-0 run, capped by consecutive Allen three-pointers, to take its first lead of the half at 68-65 with 6:54 on the clock.


The Blue Hens, who did not trail from there, went up 79-71 with 3:05 to play, but the Tribe closed within 81-79 with 43 seconds left. Darian Bryant then hit a huge three-pointer from the right wing with 17 seconds left, and after a Tribe miss, Carter knocked down one free throw to close the scoring.

“We have a fearless group of young guards, and have guys who can makes threes. We made a couple, and our confidence grew from there. Kevin (Anderson) did a great job quarterbacking our group, and we have a couple guys who can really put the ball in the hole. Norfolk, Va. (Mar. 14, 2019) --- Two-time defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion North Carolina Central made a strong statement in its bid for a three-peat, sprinting past Delaware State 75-57 in a MEAC Tournament quarterfinal at the Scope Arena Thursday evening.

The third-seeded Eagles shot 53.7% for the game (29-for-54) to advance to the tournament semifinals for the third straight year.

Randy Miller led four double-figure scorers with a game-high 18 points for NCCU. Raasean Davis (5-7 FGs), Larry McKnight, Jr. (4-7) and Jibri Blount (5-8) added 10 points each, while Zacarry Douglas had nine points and led all players with 12 rebounds in the contest for the Eagles.

Kevin Larkin was the high scorer for Delaware State with 16 points, while fellow senior Saleik Edwards added 13.

North Carolina Central (16-15) shot 60.7% in the first half (17-for-28) to lead 44-28 at the break.

After Delaware State pulled to within 37-28 on a jumper by D’Marco Baucum, the Eagles scored the last seven points of the first half.

NCCU scored six of the first eight points of the second half, and opened up a 50-30 lead on a put back dunk by Davis with 16:49 left to play.

The Eagles held their biggest lead, 70-49, on a lay-up by Jordan Perkins with 3:58 remaining.

“There’s a reason why North Carolina Central is a top team in our league year after year,” said Delaware State first-year head coach Eric Skeeters. “ I’m proud of my team, especially the seniors, for the growth we experienced this year. We’ve come a long way since the beginning of the season, and I’ll always be grateful to my staff and players for their contributions to my first year as a head coach. ”

Larkin, a native of Georgetown, Del., was also reflective on his lone season as a Hornet.
“This season meant everything to me because I had the chance to return home and play in front of my family and friends, and compete with a great group of guys.”

The NCCU contest was also the final college game for Edwards, who joined the Hornets during the 2017-18 season.

“This has been the best season of my life,” Edwards said. “I’m proud to be part of the rebuilding of this program. I believe great things are ahead for the program.”

Delaware State (6-25) shot 35.4% for the game, connecting on 23 of their 65 shots from the field, including just four- of-22 on three-point attempts.

NCCU won the rebound battle 38-33, although Delaware State took better care of the ball, committing just nine turnovers to 16 for the Eagles.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference defending champions Georgian Court broke away in the fourth quarter against the Wilmington University men’s lacrosse team, taking the 16-9 victory in close battle throughout at Georgian Court Track & Field Complex.

The final score doesn’t indicate how close the game was throughout the contest, as the Wildcats (5-5, 0-1 CACC) scored with 13:57 left in the fourth quarter to bring the visitors to within 9-8. But the Lions (5-7, 1-0 CACC) rattled off seven straight goals to take command in the game.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead in the first CACC contest of the year, turning a 1-0 deficit in the first quarter to a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes of play. Dylan McCleaft tied the game before Jake Walsh scored back-to-back goals, the second coming with just 16 seconds left in the quarter.

The Lions scored the first goal of the second quarter, but McCleaft gave the Wildcats a 4-2 lead with his second goal of the game with 12:45 to play in the half. But the Lions would squeeze the Wildcats the rest of the quarter, scoring the final three goals of the half and head into the break with a 5-4 lead.

Georgian Court extended the lead out to 6-4 with the first goal of the third quarter before the Wildcats found the offense again. Dylan McCleaft recorded a hat trick with his third goal of the game before Jake Walsh tied the game with his third of the day, 6-6, with 9:05 showing on the clock. After the Lions regained the lead with a mark, Sean Sheehan got on the board with 6:26 to play, tying the game once more at 7-7. But again, Georgian Court would score the final goal of the quarter, taking an 8-7 lead into the final frame.

They would also score the first goal of the fourth quarter to go up 9-7, before Austin Wood got in the scoring column with a goal with 13:57 left to bring the Wildcats to within 9-8. But then the Lions took off, scoring seven straight starting with the 12:04 mark of the fourth. They scored a pair of man-up goals within the six-minute mark and scored their final goal of the game with 1:16 left in regulation.

The Wildcats outshot the Lions, 37-32, in the game, including 24-23 in shots on goal, but the Lions’ Austin Geissel made 15 saves for the home team. Anton Mackey went 17-for-27 in the face-off circle on the day, The Lions went 4-for-8 on man-up opportunities while the Wildcats went 0-for-2.

The Wildcats have little time to think about the loss on Wednesday, as they return to the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday after four games on the road. They take on Post in another CACC game on Senior Day. The opening face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Newark, Del. (Apr. 10, 2019) --- Delaware State scored five runs in each of the first two innings and never looked back in a 13-3 softball victory over Delaware State today.

Karolina Flores and Brittney Mendoza drove in three runs each to lead the Hens. Flores was three-for-three at the plate, including two doubles, while Mendoza was among four Delaware players with two hits.

Delaware State scored its three runs in the fifth inning to snap a 25-inning scoreless streak.

Delaware’s five-run first inning was highlighted by Mendoza’s two-run double and a run-scoring two-base hit by Flores.

Hanna Garber singled in two runs, while Flores doubled in a run in the Hens’ second inning.

Flores drove in her third run of the game on a single in the UD third and Mendoza collected her third RBI on a double in the fourth.

Jaelyn Baker had a two-run double and Jordan Casey singled in a run in the Hornets’ three-run fifth. Baker and Casey each had two hits in three at bats in the game.

Sarah Piening (9-11) pitched a complete game to earn the win for the Hens, allowing seven hits and the three DSU runs, while striking out six and walking one in five innings.

Brianna Baker (3-13) took the loss for Delaware State.

The game was called after Delaware State batted in the top of the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but the second game was cancelled by agreement of the teams.

The Hornets return to action with two games at UMBC this Sat. (Apr. 13). Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.

SUBJECT: Softball Sweeps USciences With Back-to-Back Shutouts, 3-0, and 8-0

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Wilmington University softball team combined for 17 hits in their doubleheader sweep against USciences, taking the first game, 3-0, before winning the second game in six innings, 8-0 on Wednesday afternoon at FDR Park.

Game One:

Sophomore Makayla McCarthy would tie her single game record of strikeouts with 14 in the 3-0 shutout over USciences in game one Wednesday afternoon.

Both teams had chances in the first few innings of the contest, but no run would be scored until the top of the sixth inning in favor of the Wildcats (26-10, 14-2 CACC). Lauren Lopez got things started in the inning with a one-out double, before Annie Davila hit a single to center, scoring Lopez and breaking the scoreless drought of the game.

Looking for some insurance in the top of the seventh, Lexi Baughman and Courtney Dellinger both got on for WilmU with two outs to bring up Kiana Broderson-Jones. Broderson-Jones then tripled to center field to bring in both runs and giving the Wildcats a 3-0 lead heading into the Devils’ final at bats.

McCarthy would allow five hits and two walks in the contest, but her 14 strikeouts would hold off the Devils’ chances of scoring. She would strikeout at least two of the three batters in each inning, except for in the fifth inning, striking out just one.

Kiana Broderson-Jones had two hits and one RBI, as Annie Davlia went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk. Angela Antonini and Lexi Baughman had one hit, as well.

Game Two:

Getting the start again in game two, Makayla McCarthy would go 6.0 IP, allowing only two hits, and six strikeouts for her second shutout of the day.

Wilmington got on the board quick in the second game, scoring the first run off a Devils’ error in the first inning. With two outs in the top of the second, Courtney Dellinger and Jazmeen Llamas got on with back-to-back singles to bring up Kiana Broderson-Jones again. This time, Broderson-Jones singled to the second baseman, scoring Dellinger and Llamas to give WilmU a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, Broderson-Jones came through with her second triple of the day to score Dellinger, before Alyssa Velasquez would bring her home with a sacrifice fly out to left center.

The fourth inning would be another big inning for the Wildcats as Wilmington had three runs on four hits, including Alyssa Velasquez’ single to center that scored two, putting the Wildcats in front, 7-0.

Kiana Broderson-Jones went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, as Courtney Dellinger and Jazmeen Llamas went 2-for-3 in the game. Alyssa Velasquez had one hit and three RBI, as Lauren Lopez added her 46th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning.

Next Up:

The Wildcats are back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon, as they host Dominican in a makeup game from March 23 at Asbury Field. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 2:30 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom Softball Drops Two to No. 18 Georgian Court


Goldey-Beacom in game one kept 18th-ranked Georgian Court at bay with a 4-0 loss in game one before a late-game onslaught in game two led to an 11-0 setback during Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.


Haley Jones in game one got the Lions on the board by scoring on a fielding error in the second inning. Eryka Springer in the third stroked an RBI single and Jones added a sacrifice fly later in the frame for a 3-0 contest.


Samantha Reilly lifted a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning for the final.


Middletown, DE sophomore Taylor Beres (6-10) kept the Lightning (8-24, 6-10 CACC) in the game, striking out three and allowing just three earned runs and seven hits over seven innings.


Jessica O’Neil (13-1) tossed a four-hit shutout with three strikeouts for Georgian Court. Malaya Black rapped two hits.


Game two was scoreless entering the fifth inning before the Lions erupted for five runs in the frame. Malia Black had an infield single that brought home a run, Springer crushed a three-run triple and Jones lined an RBI double.


Georgian Court (32-5, 17-1) got five more runs in the seventh, highlighted by Jones’ two-run single.


Jones finished with three hits and three RBI. Mikayla Gilgert (12-3) struck out seven over six innings, allowing just four hits.


Sophomore Zoe Lockwood (Chesapeake City, MD) had a hit in game two and now owns the team lead with 28 this season for GBC.


Goldey-Beacom on Thursday is home again for the seventh time in 10 days. This time it will face Kutztown for a 2:30 pm doubleheader at the Jackson Complex.

NEW CASTLE, Del. – In a makeup game from March 23, the Wilmington University softball team split contests with Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Dominican, falling 9-7 in the game one, before coming back to win game two, 10-1 in six innings at Asbury Field on Thursday afternoon.

In the doubleheader, sophomore Lauren Lopez collected eight RBI, breaking the single season mark now with 54 RBI on the year. She surpassed Jillian Stafford’s mark of 51 RBI in 2013, still with 10 games let in the regular season.

Game One:

A big six-run fifth inning for the Chargers would give them their first lead of the game, helping them pull away with the 9-7 win.

The Wildcats (27-11, 15-3 CACC) had a commanding 5-0 lead through the third inning, but the Chargers would just get started in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the third, Wilmington had two runners on for Lauren Lopez, who doubled down the left field line, scoring Alyssa Velasquez and Kiana Broderson-Jones. Annie Davila would be the next batter for the Wildcats, as she saw a pitch to drive the ball out over the left field fence for a two-run homerun to give WilmU a 5-0 lead.

The Chargers would get their first two runs of the game in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer, but it wasn’t until with two outs in the top of the fifth, a two-run Chargers home run would start their rally. Dominican would have three straight singles, until another homerun would bring in their sixth run of the inning to take an 8-5 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Makayla McCarthy would make it a two-run game with a solo shot out to left field to start something for the Wildcats. The next three batters would get on for WilmU to bring up Rosa’Lynn Burton with the bases loaded, who singled up the middle to make an 8-7 ballgame. Wilmington would leave the bases loaded to end the inning, before the Chargers got an insurance run in the top of the sixth to finish out the game with a two-run lead.

Caitlyn Whiteside would go 6.0 IP, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs, with one walk and one strikeout.

Lauren Lopez, Makayla McCarthy, and Rosa’Lynn Burton all went 2-for-4 in the game. Lopez would finish with three RBI, as Burton and McCarthy had one RBI. Annie Davila’s homerun gave her two RBI in the game. Lexi Baughman and Jazmeen Llamas both went 2-for-3 for the Wildcats.

Game Two:

Eight runs in the last three innings for the Wildcats would give them the eight-run rule over Dominican in the sixth inning.

The Wildcats got started early, as they scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first on singles from Lauren Lopez and Lexi Baughman.

With two outs in the bottom half of the fourth, Rosa’Lynn Burton got the Wildcats started with a single, before Kiana Broderson-Jones got on with a walk. With both players now in scoring position, Lauren Lopez would do what she does best, as she doubled down the left field line scoring both runners. Makayla McCarthy and Alexis Sann would keep it going, as they got on with a single and a walk to bring up Alyssa Velasquez. Velasquez then singled up the middle to give WilmU their third run of the inning and give the Wildcats a 5-1 lead heading into the top of the fifth.

Wilmington would bring in three more runs in the bottom half of the fifth, from another two-run single from Lopez and a sacrifice fly from McCarthy. Up by just seven runs in the bottom of the sixth, Lexi Baughman finished the game with a two-run homerun to straight away center to end the ball game, 10-1.

Makayla McCarthy would go 6.0 IP, allowing five hits, three walks, and one earned run with five strikeouts. She would get the win and improve to 12-3 in the season.

Lauren Lopez and Rosa’Lynn Burton both went 3-for-4 in the ballgame. Lopez finished with a double and five RBI. Lexi Baughman went 2-for-4 with a homerun and three RBI. Alyssa Velasquez and Makayla McCarthy both had one hit and one RBI.

Next Up:

The Wildcats are back at Asbury Field on Saturday afternoon as they take on Caldwell for Senior Day. Game one is now set for 2:00 p.m.

NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak has announced a two-year contract extension through the 2023-24 season for Blue Hen men’s basketball head coach Martin Ingelsby.


Ingelsby, along with outstanding assistant coaches Bill Phillips, Corey McCrae and Torrian Jones, Director of Operations Pat Rogers and Coordinator of Player Development/Videography Danny O’Connor, has led the Blue Hens to 44 victories during his first three seasons in Newark, and Delaware has increased its win total during all three years.


Ingelsby guided Delaware to a six-win improvement during his first season in 2016-17, while the 2017-18 squad won 14 games including a CAA Tournament triumph over Elon. This past season the Blue Hens recorded their highest win total and highest CAA finish since 2014 with 17 victories, and advanced to the CAA Tournament Semifinals for the first time in five years with a dramatic comeback victory over William & Mary in the quarterfinals.


An outstanding recruiter, Ingelsby’s teams have featured a pair of CAA Rookies of the Year, and the Blue Hens are the only conference school to feature an All-Rookie Team selection during each of his three seasons. This year Eric Carter was a second team All-CAA and All-District honoree, while freshman Ithiel Horton was named to the CAA All-Tournament Team.


The Blue Hens also enjoyed an excellent year in the classroom, as Delaware posted the highest men’s basketball academic GPA since records began in 1995-96.


“I am truly honored and humbled to be the head coach at the University of Delaware,” Ingelsby said. “I want to thank President Assanis, Chrissi Rawak and the Board of Trustees for their support and commitment to our basketball program. I am proud of the progress we have made over the last three years and couldn’t be more excited about the direction we are heading.”

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The 12th ranked Jefferson basketball team scored the first 18 points of the game in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinals and the Wilmington University men’s basketball team never recovered, falling 100-61 at Bobby Morgan Arena on the campus of USciences.

Saturday was the team’s second ever appearance in the CACC Semifinals, making the CACC Tournament in five out of the past six years. The 2014-15 squad made it to the CACC Tournament Championship in the only other semifinal appearance in the program’s NCAA era.

On Saturday, the Rams made their first six shots, holding a 15-0 lead before they missed a jumper. The Wildcats didn’t score until Taalib Holloman put in a layup with 13:43 showing on the clock.

The half didn’t get any better for the Wildcats, as the Rams took a 30-4 lead with 10:04 to play. The Rams rode the right hand of Josh Bradanese in the first half as the senior shot 11-of-13 form the field, including 6-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc, scoring 28 points to go with four rebounds and three assists in the first half alone.

Jefferson led 55-22 at the half, shooting 60.6 percent as a team from the floor, hitting 9-of-13 from three-point territory. On the other end, the Wildcats only shot 26.5 percent from the floor, shooting 4-of-13 from deep in the half.

The second half didn’t go any better for the Wildcats, as the Rams continued to shoot the ball well, going 18-of-29 in the half for a 62.1 percentage. The Rams’ lead grew to as large as 45 in the second half and the Wildcats could never get it closer than 31 points.

Bradanese finished with a career high 38 points as three Rams scored 20 or more in the game.

The Wildcats were led by First Team All-CACC performer Jermaine Head as he finished his illustrious career with 20 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Danny Walsh scored 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting, hitting four three-pointers. Taalib Holloman scored 10 points as well for the Wildcats. Jordan Harding led the Wildcats with 11 rebounds.

Head, the lone senior on the Wildcats’ squad, finishes his career as the program’s all-time leader with 1,871 points, 450 assists, and 206 steals. He averaged 21.5 points per game in his career, also a program best in the NCAA era.
