Military family that is moving to Dover in the next month. We are looking for a HS for our Soph. daughter. She is a talented basketball player for a Catholic school in CA. As outsiders that know nothing about Delaware High Schools, what are the schools (public or private) that have the best combination of education and basketball? We aren't necessarily looking for the powerhouse, but a competitive program with good coach that develops his/her players at a college prep type school.
Thanks.

Dover High School is also an option-Beautiful High School!! They just hired Taylor Tuck former player at the University of Illinois and sister of UConn Star/4x NCAA National women's Championship/ WNBA player for the Connecticut Sun Morgan Tuck!!! I am pretty sure Coach Tuck understands how to develop athletes and what it takes to play Div 1 basketball....I'm just saying

I would suggest visiting and getting a tour of all the suggested school in the area and then decide what is your best option. It alway best to do your homework:D

I would take a look at Smyrna High school for the public school route. They are young and talented with a great sophomore class that she could grow with. Coach Terrance Brown is a good coach whose niece is Betnijah Laney who played at Rutgers and is now playing with the WNBA Chicago Sky.

As for the private schools....look into taking a 1hr. commute to Northern Delaware to The Sanford School to play for Coach Marcus Thompson, St. Elizabeth to play for Coach Cooney, or Ursuline to play for Coach Noonan. All 3 of these schools have great academics and good coaching.

Thanks! I just pray that more parents start weighing all their options instead of just settling and then maybe these Athletic Directors will start putting some of these mediocre coaches on notice. I've noticed that (as far as boys and girls basketball is concerned) most of the better coaches don't work for the school they coach at. Those Athletic Directors hire the best available coaching candidates based on their coaching resume and not that they work for that school district.

Some places require that coaching jobs be offered first to school or district employees. It could be part of the negotiations with teachers' unions.

Don't put the coach for St. Elizabeth in with Noonan and Thompson. This is not St. Elizabeth of old. Biggest upset in tourney last year.

I didn't think it was a upset myself. And the reason I even mentioned him in with them is because the times I did see them play he let his kids play their game instead of trying to put them in a box like quite a few of these Delaware coaches do. The biggest upset in the tourney last year was on the boys side with Dover losing to St. Thomas More!!!!!

I agree that in basketball minds it was not a huge upset. I was more referring to the seeding. That might have been one of the biggest numerical upsets in a long time.

For those who follow Dover the St. Thomas More win was an upset but not in so that Dover always struggles with a well disciplined team. Fans where leaving with 1 minute on the clock they knew we where done. Also after watching some of their summer league games I'm going on record now and say St. Thomas More will play and or win the chip this year. They know how to play together. As for my Senators the rebuild begins!

Dover has no discipline. Starts with Wilson his teams are never ready for playoff basketball they just beat teams because they are just better. They run into a well coached team problems occur. It's a shame to Coach Wilson always has talent just can never get it down.

In girls' basketball? Sussex Tech was No. 24 a few years back when it beat Padua, I think.

Anyway, I'm guessing a decision has already been made. But if I was moving to Dover and was cool with paying for a private school that does well academically and athletically, I would pick Caravel. Much as it pains me to say that. I'm not sure if I am surprised it wasn't mentioned or not.
