Officials needed

Perhaps a referee shortage will reduce crews to only two, this way we can actually enjoy the game without all the ticky tack b.s. fouls called every second.

The officials force a three-man system on all the schools, then cry about not having enough officials. The situation was created by them. Now they are cancelling games??

The story linked is more about WHY there aren't more officials and as much as we get on refs, the story is true - the pay isn't enough to be yelled at by parents who think their kid is the next big thing or anybody else, for that matter.

Then they should have pushed for a raise. Take the third officials check and bump the others up. And don't just think its the parents. Take notice of some of the coaches.

Most of the problem with the officials is DIAA over doing it with the points of emphasis. It becomes a statistical thing, basically refs playing it safe and making multiple unecessary calls in case they are ever questioned about missed calls. I think this takes away any aggressive defensive play and allows less talented teams and kids to look like all stars or win games. All this kills the flow of the game, creates delusional kids, and hinders development. At the end of the day who wants that abuse under such unreasonable conditions set by the state.

C'mon. We have all been to the games. The fans are always yelling/screaming at the refs and it goes too far. Sure they miss calls or over referee at times but what you are seeing is a direct result of fan/parent behavior. We ask our kids to have sportsmanship and be courteous yet the example set in the stands is often the opposite. Personally, i hope they stick with 3 person teams as long as the refs are well trained and understand positioning and rotation.

There is a shortage of officials in most high school sports. Like someone said, who the heck wants to be yelled at? As a spectator I feel for these guys. Also feel for the kids and the coaches. There is just no pleasing parents. A lot of these parents have nothing better to do than to criticize officials and the coaches. BTW, if you ever see a parent sitting all by themselves at a high school sporting event, its probably because they dont want to be a part of that nonsense.

So we’ll said & so true. I’ve been to quite a few boys & girls games & witnessed it. I think we should videotape these morons & call them out. AD’s & Administrators need to be more proactive in the attempt to clean this up.

No competent referee is worried about crazy fans opinions. I think they should double referees pay but for the reasons of providing better qualified officials for the benefit of the kids. Ticky tack fouls are killing kids development, making kids soft, that's the problem here in delaware. They give false hope to less talented kids & contribute to slowing the development of talented kids. Fans are the same every where I go, refs suck here let's not beat around the bush, so does most of the coaching. Not an easy job, but when u suck at it makes things worse.

I would also have to mention the qualifications factor. I believe a lot of parents are complaining because of the quality of officiating. For instance, last night, at the Polytech/Dover game, I saw someone who just received his license officiating at the varsity level. I have to admit, it was pretty bad seeing kids get mowed down and no call in any direction, a few kick balls and no whistle. There was a technical foul called on a kid for hanging onto the rim after dunking because the defender was still standing under the basket. So I understand the argument on both sides. There is no way an new official should be officiating at the varsity level. Isn't there a rule about that.
In addition to this, what I was told by an official is that officiating has become political. In the sense that if an official is not hanging out with other officials and getting together for this and that, those who are running things will black ball them and not give them assignments. I do not know how true it is, but that's what I've been told by an official.
