The comprehensive DSSAA/DIAA football tournament year to year thread

I couldn't argue with that thought on McLane as a DE HS FB player. Yet I could name 20 other players that I could understand someone selecting. That is based on their HS play Lone..

I’ve heard Pedro was even better at track and baseball. Maybe the best pound for pound athlete to ever play high school sports in Delaware?

I've heard folks give Delino DeShields that distinction. Has to be in the conversation All-American in baseball and basketball at Seaford

Absolutely. Poor seaford.

The fact that we will never see a dominant Seaford, St. Marks, Dickinson, most likely Newark again breaks my heart.

When I was a kid coming of age in the 90s, Dickinson and Seaford were winding down, but Newark and St. Mark's were ALWAYS in the Division I title picture. I guess things change, but it's rough to see schools you're used to seeing be good at everything or at least football and basketball just fall to the wayside.

Delino DeShields hands down The Best pound for pound athlete to ever play high school sports in Delaware ..... Football, Basketball, Baseball

I can't think of a better all around DE HS athlete than Deshields. He did not play FB his senior year. I saw his last FB game in 1985 when he was a JR. The Blue Jays lost at Glasgow in the semis of the state football tournament.

I played in that game and Deshields was a nightmare at QB. We could barely get a hand on him. Lots of dropped passes by his receivers and "3rd Down Punt" led to a Dragons win that day. Only other athlete I can think of close to Deshields is Derrick May from Newark. He was an awesome 3 sport athlete too.

Great thread and a trip down memory lane for me. I worked my first playoff game in 1995. Wm Penn versus Concord. I worked my last championship game in 2012, Middletown v Salesianum and my final playoff game in 2013 St George's v. Woodbridge at Appo. Father time you are a worthy adversary.

My favorite vertical stripes memory is when you and lil nuk met face to face o_O during that HVT/CR game in 2013 lol. Hope that collision wasn't what led to your retirement?

They got completely outfoxed by G-High coach Rene Clements. The best fake punt I’ve ever seen! Went for about a 50 yard TD!

No TD on that play, but we scored shortly after and the momentum stayed with us. When my son was at Hodgson, I begged the coaching staff to let me teach that play, but it never happened. Only time I've ever seen it was that day. Best trick play ever! Great memory!

Oh and I was the punter that got taken out so Lester Patrick could make the throw...

Don’t worry, after November this pandemic will magically disappear when the Dems figure out they can’t win and COVID will become the new flu !!!

Agreed. Clements won that game by out-coaching Captain Dick. Also agree - best fake punt I ever saw! The Seaford coaches were yelling at their punt returners to get away from it, but it was actually a pass , not a punt. A G-High player just stepped under it and caught it for a TD. Changed the whole complexion of the game.

It was Delino’s JR year and his last FB game. He didn’t play FB his SR year. Like Nuk said it gave the Dragon’s the ball deep In the red zone and they scored right after that.

Thought that maybe Glasgow had a shot against Newark the next week The Dragon’s got off to a 10-0 lead but Newark had too much firepower and won like 21-10.

Nice walk down memory lane. A Glasgow All State FB player is now the Colonel of the New Castle County Police Dept.

Delino Deshields was definitely a once in a lifetime athlete for Delaware. He was a star even before high school.....Little League World Series participant in Baseball and won the National Punt, Kick, and Pass competition. The best I ever seen. I actually thought he was better in basketball.

That 3rd down punt trick by G-High was one of the best trick plays ever!

So after all the championships every year are done, I always used to go to Calpreps “project a matchup tab”….. just to see who would win between Division 1 and Division 2….and what I found when I went on there today is they got Middletowns Rating at 43 and Archmere at 41 with Smyrna 38.

so project a matchup has a Middletown vs. Archmere game 24-19 in the favor of Cavs. That would be a great game to watch IMO. What’s everyone’s thought on a hypothetical game between those two? Do you agree or disagree with said projected score and maybe why or why not? I haven’t watched Archmere at all this year except for the DMA playoff game.

I think Middletown would beat them by 3 TDs. Albero is a good QB but Edge is better. Knight is better then the Archmere RBs. Smyrna's receiving core is probably better then Archmeres as well. I bring up Smyrna just because they weren't able to get the job done, so offensively Smyrna is better and I don't think Archmere would really be able to score. The only place I think Archmere would be able to keep it close would be up front. They have a really good o-line and D-line and linebackers. But if Davis has time to throw I think he would throw for a lot. Which would then open their run game up too. Not taking anything away from Archmere but I don't think they would be able to compete there. After Middletown and Smyrna I think if you start matching up Dover, Sallies, and St. George against Archmere, Woodbridge and DMA, I think you will have toss ups who would win.

An old Auk once told me that he played on the Archmere team that beat the Sals in ‘49.

A quick question, do larger division schools get penalized for playing smaller division schools like in the old point system?
Like Howard would have beaten the Sals last year. This year, I am unsure about the Auks beating the Sals, but it would have been a compelling matchup….

No you do not get penalized for playing down a division. If you win 4 points, if you lose 0 points

Couldn’t disagree more, 1st off why are you lumping Archmere-Woodbridge-DMA together. They are not in the category of any of those teams could beat the other on any given day. Archmere is clearly the best out of those three and it isn’t close. From what I saw in the championship Archmere would beat Woodbridge probably 9 times if they played 10 times. Archmere completely dominated Woodbridge. Game looked over in 2nd quarter. As far as Archmere/DMA, DMA had two shots at Archmere, one at home and one at a neutral site, and came away with a loss both times. One was close and one was a blowout. So don’t lump them together, Archmere is the clear class of 2A and it isn’t even close. I believe Archmere(this years team) would beat Dover, Sallies, or St. George’s for sure. Now let’s look at Archmere vs either Middletown or Smyrna, I think Archmere would absolutely have opportunities to beat both those teams and if they played 10 times Archmere could win probably 4 times, but that being said, in any one game I would take both Middletown and Smyrna over Archmere in a close game. All I am trying to say is after watching the championship games and a couple of the big games this year, Archmere looks a lot closer to both Middletown and Smyrna than either DMA or Woodbridge look to Archmere. Also, it was pretty obvious that DMA was the 2nd best team in 2A given the absolute dominating fashion that Archmere beat Woodbridge.
