Dover, Del. (June 26, 2017) --- A school-record total 182 Delaware State University student-athletes have been honored by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for their work in the classroom.

The Hornet athletes are among 1,209 from the 13 MEAC schools named to the 2017 Commissioner's All-Academic Team, which honors non-freshmen student-athletes with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

“I would like to commend the administrators, athletic academic support staff and personnel, coaches, institutions, and parents for their contributions to the academic success of these student-athletes,” said MEAC Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas.

Delaware State's 182 MEAC scholar-athletes ranked second among league schools during the 2016-17 academic year. Howard University was tops with 190.

The Hornets, however, topped all MEAC schools with 126 scholar-athletes among the women's sports teams.

NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware Athletics is upgrading two of its most recognizable athletic fields and has chosen AstroTurf® for the makeover.

Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium, home of the UD football and men's and women's lacrosse teams, and Fred P. Rullo Stadium, home of the 2016 NCAA champion Blue Hen field hockey squad, are both having state-of-the-art AstroTurf surfaces installed this summer, and each venue is getting a premium turf designed for optimum performance in the sport of record.

Delaware Stadium will soon receive a playing surface made of RootZone 3D3 Blend, AstroTurf's signature football product. This artificial turf system utilizes multiple specialized fibers including AstroTurf's patented RootZone, a sub-layer that stabilizes infill while improving safety, playability, and durability.

Installation is already underway at Rullo Stadium, where the AstroTurf System 90 playing surface is being laid down. This premium field hockey product combines the traditional knitted nylon top cloth with a 3/8th inch Armacell pad.

AstroTurf is recognized as the Official Artificial Surface Provider of both USA Field Hockey and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, and its playing surfaces have long been regarded as the unequivocal standard for field hockey performance due to their consistent ball roll, durability, and low maintenance.

“We keep coming back to AstroTurf because there's simply no comparison among their industry peers,” said Joe Shirley, UD senior associate AD of facilities, operations and capital projects. “The University of Delaware has installed a new baseball playing surface (Bob Hannah Stadium), an indoor practice facility (Delaware Field House), and several multi-use practice fields over the past four years. Each time we get an excellent playing surface, engineered for the demands of the sport, and tailored for our specific project needs.”

UD has also recently installed AstroTurf surfaces on its football practice fields and intramural grounds. The two new surfaces will be fully integrated into the athletic campus by the end of summer.

Sports Construction Management, a certified AstroTurf distributor, is managing installation of both new fields. The schedule calls for Rullo Stadium to be completed by the end of July, and removal of the old surface at Delaware Stadium has begun with the new playing field slated to be ready before football season kicks off.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Delaware’s own Esmée Peet, a four-time All-American field hockey player who led the Blue Hens to the NCAA national title this past fall, is one of a record 543 female college athletes who have been nominated for the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year award.

Established in 1991 and now in its 27th year, the NCAA Woman of the Year award honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers. The average grade point average for the entire group of nominees is an incredible 3.69.

The school nominees represent all three NCAA divisions, with 229 from Division I, 117 from Division II and 197 from Division III. The nominees competed in 21 different women’s sports and 122 were multisport athletes during their time in college.

A native of Zeewolde, The Netherlands, Peet’s hard work, leadership, and motivation helped her to became one of the all-time great student-athletes in UD history as she earned All-American, All-Region, and All-CAA honors each of her four seasons while leading the squad to a combined record of 69-22 and four straight league titles and NCAA Tournament appearances.

As a four-time All-American and two-year captain, an honor student in the classroom, a community service volunteer, and as a member of the 2016 national champion Delaware field hockey team, Peet certainly made the most of her experience as a Blue Hen. In May, she received UD’s prestigious Mary Ann Hitchens, which is awarded to a senior female letterwinner who exhibits outstanding qualities of hard work, dedication, leadership, fairness, and striving for excellence.

An outstanding scholar, she earned her degree with honors as a business/operations management major this past May after earning spots on both the NFHCA National Academic squad and CAA Academic Honor Roll while being nominated for CoSIDA Academic All-American honors thanks to her 3.80 grade point average. In the community, Peet was an active volunteer with her teammates in support of Special Olympics, Polar Bear Plunge, and UDance initiatives.

The NCAA Woman of the Year Award process will continue later this summer as conferences will select up to two conference nominees each from the pool of school nominees. The Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will then choose the top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.

From the top 30, the selection committee determines the top three honorees from each division and announces the nine finalists in September. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics then chooses the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year from those nine.

The top 30 honorees will be recognized and the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced at the annual award ceremony Oct. 22 in Indianapolis.

Peet is aiming to become the second UD student-athlete to advance to the final 30. She hopes to join former UD standout field hockey player Leah Geib, who was a Top 10 finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award in 2005. Geib was inducted into the UD Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Colonial Athletic Association announced its post-season women’s track & field honors this week and 10 University of Delaware standouts were recognized for their accomplishments during the spring season.

Earning All-CAA honors based on their top three finishes at the CAA Championships back on May 5-6 at Delaware were CAA discus champion Sarah Hillman, Ashley Bailey (pole vault), Liz McGroarty (800 meters, 1,500 meters), Jeanette Bendolph (800 meters), Leslie Ope (100 meter hurdles), London Freeland (400 meter hurdles; 4 x 400 meter relay), Carolyn Darr (4 x 100 meter hurdles; 4 x 400 meter hurdles), Isis Pinkney (4 x 100 meter relay), Haley Berkeley (4 x 100 meter relay), Tyler Jackson (4 x 100 meter relay), Nadia Khoury (4 x 400 meter relay), and Carly Pettipaw (4 x 400 meter relay).

Pettipaw was also honored as part of the CAA All-Academic Team, which honors one student-athlete from each conference team based on outstanding achievements in the classroom.

A native of Mt. Laurel, N.J. (Lenape High School), Pettipaw is a biomedical engineering major who is a three-time member of the CAA Academic Honor Roll, a CoSIDA Academic All-American nominee, and a dean’s list student.

She placed second in the 4 x 400 meter relay and fifth in the 400 meter hurdles at the CAA Championships and went on to earn All-East honors by placing seventh in the 4 x 400 meter relay and eighth in the 400 meter hurdles at the ECAC Championships in May.

Also earning spots on the CAA All-Academic Team were Alexis Dickerson (UNCW); Zanae Freeland (Towson); Leia Mistowski (William & Mary); Tessa Mundell (James Madison); Briana O’Grady (Elon); Julisa Tindall (College of Charleston); and Audrey Weyand (Northeastern).

NEWARK, Del. -- New University of Delaware men’s lacrosse head coach Ben DeLuca has turned to a pair of exceptional coaches with familiar backgrounds to fill his coaching staff.
DeLuca, who was selected as Delaware’s ninth men’s lacrosse head coach last month, announced Friday that Georgetown assistant Matt Rewkowski and former Blue Hen standout goalkeeper and assistant coach Noah Fossner have joined the staff.
Both new coaches have significant ties to DeLuca and to Delaware. Rewkowski spent the last five seasons assisting at Georgetown where he served under former UD assistant coach Kevin Warne following a two-year tenure on DeLuca’s staff as associate head coach at Cornell. Fossner was a standout goalkeeper for the Blue Hens in 2008-11, earned his degree in 2011, was goalkeepers coach at Delaware for two seasons, and served on the staff with DeLuca at Harvard this past spring.
“I am excited to welcome these two men to the Blue Hen Lacrosse program,” said DeLuca, who joined the Blue Hens after serving stints as head coach at Cornell and as an assistant at Harvard, Duke, and Cornell. “Matt has extensive experience and success playing and coaching lacrosse at the highest levels. He is a gifted teacher with a strong work ethic and knows what it takes for our program to be successful on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. Most importantly to me, I believe Matt is a man of high character and outstanding values.
“Noah is a Blue Hen through and through, a loyal alumnus, ,and arguably one of the finest leaders to come through the Delaware lacrosse program,” DeLuca added. “He is a rising star in our profession and has great experience at multiple Division I programs. Noah is a passionate educator driven by integrity, strong morals, outstanding character.”
A native of Niskayuna, N.Y., Fossner will serve as Delaware’s defensive coordinator and will work with the Blue Hen goalkeepers. One of the top netminders in Delaware history, Fossner was a three-year starter for retired head coach Bob Shillinglaw and was the only three-time captain in school history.

One of the most inspirational players in Shillinglaw’s tenure, he led the Hens to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2011 and 2012, earned All-Colonial Athletic Association honors, was a team Most Valuable Player, earned CAA All-Tournament honors twice, and was named Most Valuable Player of the USILA North-South Senior All-Star game in 2011. He ended his UD career ranked in the top six all-time in saves (552), minutes played (3,003), and goals against average (9.65).
After earning his degree in health and physical education from Delaware in 2011, he served as a volunteer assistant at Rutgers in 2012-13, returned to serve as defensive coordinator and goalkeepers coach at his alma mater in 2014-15, was an assistant at Boston University for one season in 2016, and served as Harvard’s lacrosse operations coordinator this past spring. Fossner and his wife, Allison, will reside in the Newark area.
Rewkowski, who will serve as a offensive coordinator, is a 12-year veteran of the coaching ranks following an outstanding playing career at Johns Hopkins and Duke and a pro career with the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse. He was a senior co-captain for the Johns Hopkins team that captured the 2005 NCAA title and earned his degree there that same spring.

A native of Bethpage, N.Y., he began his coaching career at the University of Denver in 2006 before moving on to Delaware’s CAA rival Hofstra where he served four seasons (2007-10) and led the Pride to 36 victories, two CAA titles, and three NCAA Tournament berths. He coached eight All-Americans and 27 All-CAA selections during his tenure and the 2010 team ranked No. 5 nationally in scoring (12.93 gpg).

Rewkowski moved on to Cornell and served for two seasons as DeLuca’s associate head coach in 2011-12. He helped lead the Big Red to an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal berth in 2011 when the team won the Ivy League title, went 14-3 overall, and ranked No. 2 nationally in scoring at 12.7 goals per game. That squad was bolstered by USILA national Player of the Year Rob Pannell. Despite the loss of Pannell, the 2012 team still flourished on offense and ranked No. 9 in the nation in scoring (12.0 gpa).
He continued his success at Georgetown where he served the previous five seasons until this past spring. While with the Hoyas, he led consistently high-scoring offensive units that averaged over 10 goals per game twice and helped lead the Hoyas to the Big East Tournament Championship game in 2015. He coached numerous All-Big East selections and mentored 2015 All-American Craig Berge. Rewkowski showed his versatility by moving over to the defensive coordinator position this past spring. He led a unit that allowed nine or fewer goals five times on the season.
Rewkowski and his wife, Julie, are parents to son, Ryan, and daughter, Anna.

SUBJECT: Sarah Hall, Tory Engel Represent University of Delaware at CAA SAAC Leadership Summit

RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware women's tennis player Sarah Hall and track & field team member Tory Engel represented the Blue Hens at the 2017 CAA Student-Athlete Advisory (SAAC) Leadership Summit on June 23-25.
Seventeen SAAC representatives from the conference's 10 institutions assembled in Richmond, to be the voice of their campus SAAC and provide insight on the student-athlete experience through meetings with the school's faculty athletic representatives, while also addressing issues both on the national and conference level.
The Summit began on June 23 with a joint session with CAA Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR). The two groups discussed several topics, most notably student-athlete time demands and overall well-being. One of the goals coming out of the meeting was to address the concerns and create best practices to assist institutions with enhancing the policies and procedures that already exist on their campuses.
“The CAA SAAC Leadership Summit was an amazing experience, as we were able to connect with other student athletes and work first hand with the CAA administrators” said Hall. “We're excited to take new information and ideas back to UD.”
The group finished out the weekend with team building activities that included community service. The student-athletes created heartwarming cards and filled comfort bags for youth who suffer from cancer and will be delivered to a local hospital. The CAA SAAC representatives also filmed a public service announcement for September's National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. The CAA challenged its member institutions to work with Compliance/SAAC to create an activity day for youth in their local community to help keep kid active and prevent childhood obesity.
“The Leadership Summit was an amazing experience overall and I highly recommend it to future SAAC members. I think the best part was that we were able to meet athletes from each institution who all had the same goal in making their student-athlete experience the best it can be”, Engel commented. “It was amazing to hear what each school did as we gave and took ideas from one another, building a bond so through the school year we can all reach out to one another and tackle issues as a group within the CAA.”

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware cross country team announced its 2017 schedule, which is again highlighted by two home meets at nearby White Clay Creek State Park, on Friday.



The Blue Hens, who will compete in nine invitationals during the fall, open their schedule with a trip to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Lehigh Invitational on Sept. 1, an event the team won last season. UD continues on the road as the Blue Hens head to Elon, N.C., for the Elon Opener the next day to compete in the event for the first time.



UD returns home to host the Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek on Sept. 16, before traveling to Lehigh once again for the Paul Short Invitational on Sept. 29.



The Blue Hens will then host the Blue & Gold Invitational at White Clay Creek on Oct. 7 before heading to Louisville, Ky., for the Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 14.



Delaware then travels back to Elon, N.C., for the CAA Championships on Oct. 28.



The Blue Hens again head to Bethlehem, Pa., for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Nov. 10, followed by the ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt State Park in Bronx, N.Y. on Nov. 18



Delaware, led by head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith, returns 13 letterwinners from last year's squad that captured the Lehigh Invitational title, posted two second place finishes, and placed sixth in both the CAA and ECAC Championships.



Sophomore Mackenzie Jones returns for the Blue Hens after earning the team's MVP and Outstanding Rookie awards last season, when she was the squad's top finisher in six meets including coming in third in the Lehigh Invitational and placing fourth in the Delaware Invitational. Also returning for Delaware is senior Liz McGroarty, who was the team's top finisher in the ECAC Championships, and junior Molly Doyle, the squad's Most Improved Runner in 2016.

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- Recent Blue Hen graduate Grace Chua was named a 2016-17 Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar for the third consecutive year, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Chua, a native of White Rock, British Columbia, graduated from Delaware in May with a finance degree and a 3.992 grade point average. In addition to her WGCA All-American Scholar honors, she also has represented the Blue Hens on the CAA All-Academic Team during each of the last three years.
Chua competed in all 11 tournaments this year for Delaware, which successfully defended its league title and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive season. She ranked fifth on the squad with a 78.06 average round, tying for ninth place at the season-opening Rutgers Invitational and tying for 13th place at the CAA Championship.
Chua appeared in 33 invitationals during her four years in Newark, while her 79.32 stroke average is the eighth lowest in the six-year history of the program.

DOVER, Del., July 10, 2017 -- Delaware State University Director of Athletics Skip Perkins has announced the appointment of Gwendolyn Harris as interim head coach of the Hornet track & field/cross country programs.

Harris will replace Damion Drummond, who resigned last month to accept the head track & field/cross country coach position at Delaware State’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Maryland-Eastern Shore.

A 1974 DSU graduate and former head track and field coach at the University of Pennsylvania and James Madison University, Harris has served as a Hornet track and field/cross country assistant coach since 2014.

She has also successfully steered Delaware State’s efforts in its role as host of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship the past three years. The MEAC this year renewed its agreement with DSU to host the 2017-19 cross country championships.

Harris also serves as a Director of Camps for the DSU Department of Athletics.

As a student at Delaware State, she was a member of the Hornet track & field, softball, basketball and field hockey teams. Harris is a member of the Delaware Afro-American Sports and Delaware State Athletics Halls -of-Fame.

Perkins has also announced that DSU assistant track & field/cross country assistant coach Marcus Jones will remain with the university in an interim capacity. Jones originally joined the Hornet track & field staff last summer.

He has more than 30 years of experience as a collegiate track & field coach, including stints at Hampton University, Sacramento (Cal.) State and Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College.

Jones has coached four NCAA Division I All-Americas, five Junior College All-Americas and more than 80 all-conference and all-academic student-athletes during his career.

Dover, Del. (July 12, 2017) --- Former Delaware State soccer standout Danielle Valente will represent the USA and her alma mater in international competition this summer.

Valente has been selected to Team USA that will compete in the 29th Summer University Games in Taiwan next month.

A native of Wallingford, Conn., Valente was a four-year letterwinner for the Hornets from 2012 to 2015.She is most remembered for scoring the winning goal on a penalty kick in DSU's 1-0 victory over South Carolina State to give the Hornets their second straight Independent Teams Tournament championship in 2015.

Valente was also the Hornets' leader with 12 points and tied for the team lead with five goals as a senior that year. Her career totals at DSU included six goals, three assists and 15 points.

Since graduating from Delaware State in 2016, Valente has been attending graduate school and competing in the United Kingdom.

NEWARK, Del. -- The defending Colonial Athletic Association champion University of Delaware men's soccer program and head coach Ian Hennessy announced a challenging 2017 season schedule Thursday.
The Blue Hens, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in program history by winning the 2016 CAA Tournament title last fall, will highlight the 16-game regular season ledger with eight games in Newark at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
After road exhibition games at George Mason and Saint Joseph's in mid-August, Delaware opens the season with two home games - on Monday, Aug. 28 against Bryant at 7 p.m. and on Thursday, Aug. 31 against Temple at 2 p.m. The Temple game will be held prior to the UD football team's season opener vs. Delaware State that same day at 7 p.m. at Delaware Stadium.
The Hens will then hit the road for three non-league games against Holy Cross on Sept. 3, vs. 2016 NCAA Tournament selection and rival Villanova on Sept. 6, and at Seton Hall on Sept. 13. UD returns home for the CAA opener vs. UNCW on Sept. 17.
Other highlights include a non-conference road matchup with Atlantic Coast Conference member Duke (Oct. 24), and home games vs. Drexel (Sept. 27), Penn (Oct. 4), James Madison (Oct. 11), and UMBC (Oct. 17), before concluding the regular season at home against Elon on Oct. 28.
UD will travel to Northeastern (Sept. 23), William & Mary (Sept. 30), 2016 CAA runner-up and regular season champion Hofstra (Oct. 7), and College of Charleston (Oct. 21) to round out the conference slate.
Despite losing four-time All-American, two-time CAA Player of the Year, and MLS first round draft pick Guillermo Delgado, as well as second round draftee Thomas de Villardi, to graduation, Delaware returns many top performers from last year's team that went 12-8-1 overall, including a 6-3 mark on the home pitch.
First team All-CAA selection Todd Morton (seven shutouts) will be back between the posts for Hens while senior defender Thibault Philippe and sophomore midfielder Fede Prieto (seven goals) will lead their respective units.
Philippe and Prieto each earned second team All-CAA honors a year ago. Junior midfielder Robert Gillin and junior defender John Schroeder also return following All-CAA campaigns. In total the Blue Hens return five All-CAA selections from last season.
The CAA Tournament will begin Nov. 4 with quarterfinals at home sites and continue with the semifinal and championship at the site of the regular season champion Nov. 10-12.

HARRINGTON, Del. -- University of Delaware Athletics will make its annual trek south to the Delaware State Fair next Thursday, July 27, as the Blue Hens experience the sights, tastes, and thrills of one of the state's biggest and most popular events.
UD Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak, members of the coaching staff, and nearly 25 Blue Hens student-athletes will hit the fairgrounds in late afternoon to mingle with fans and fair goers, sample the wide variety of food choices, enjoy the rides and games on the midway, and check out the numerous animal exhibits.
The Blue Hens will end the day as guest in one of the fair's signature events, the Delaware State Fair Nightly Parade that winds through the fairgrounds beginning at 7 p.m.
Delaware Athletics will also have a strong presence at the fair's new Social Spot hub located at the Exhibit Hall. From 5-7 p.m., UD student-athletes and staff will interact with fans and provide ticket information to Blue Hens athletics events, giveaways, and chances to spin the prize wheel. A photo booth will also be on site to give fans the opportunity to have shots taken with their favorite UD student-athletes and share with their friends on social media.
WMDT TV 47 in Salisbury, Md. will be on hand throughout the week, covering the event and providing updates. Delaware AD Chrissi Rawak will be a guest during live coverage of the event during the 5:30-6 p.m. segment at the Social Spot.

DOVER, Del. (July 24, 2017) -- Delaware State’s Alexis Neuer continues to add to her impressive list of achievements. Neuer, entering her sophomore year with the Hornet bowling team, has secured a spot on the USA Junior National Team (under 20).

Neuer qualified for the coveted spot on the national team after finishing third with a final round average of 206.08 (990 total pinfall) at the 2017 United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Junior Gold Championships in Cleveland last week.

A native of Lewisburg, Pa., Neuer’s freshman season at Delaware State was also highlighted by a strong showing at the 2017 USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championship and her selection as Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Co-Rookie of the Year.

She also helped lead the Hornets to the 2016-17 MEAC Northern Division title.

Goldey-Beacom Alums Jane Grimley and Becca Cordo Named Assistant Women’s Soccer Coaches


Just one year after finishing their collegiate careers, Jane Grimley (Franklinville, NJ) and Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, NJ) each have been named assistant women’s soccer coaches for Goldey-Beacom College.


Grimley put together a solid four-year run (2013-16) for the Lightning, amassing 11 goals and 28 points over 65 contests with 58 starts. The two-year captain scored four goals each of her last two seasons and recorded 10 points in her senior campaign.


Cordo also was a two-year captain and also fashioned a strong four years (2013-16) in Pike Creek, ending with 12 goals and 31 points over 67 games with 63 starts. Her junior season in 2015 statistically was her finest, closing with seven goals and 16 points.


Each also made an appearance on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Academic Honor Roll.


Both had a big role in the Lightning advancing to the CACC Tournament each of the last three seasons and recording 29 wins in that stretch, the most for a three-year period in over a decade.


GBC last season (12-6-1, 8-3-1 CACC) tied the school record for most league wins, recorded its greatest overall win total since 2002 and hosted a conference tournament game for the first time since 2005.


Goldey-Beacom opens its season September 1 at home in a league game vs. Bloomfield.

BALTIMORE -- New University of Delaware football head coach Danny Rocco is confident that his 2017 squad is ready to turn the corner and return to relevance in the Colonial Athletic Association race.
Looks like his fellow head coaches agree.
The league held its annual CAA Football Media Day Tuesday morning at M&T Bank Stadium and released is preseason head coaches/media relations director poll and its preseason all-conference team. The event also had a strong Delaware flair as former Blue Hen All-American and current third-year Baltimore Ravens tight end Nick Boyle gave the welcoming address to the student-athletes, head coaches, administrators, and media members in attendance.
The Blue Hens were well represented as Delaware earned a No. 5 pick out of 12 teams and three seniors - linebacker Charles Bell, defensive tackle Bilal Nichols, and center Brody Ken - earned All-CAA honors.
James Madison, the defending NCAA FCS national champion and league title holder, was the prohibitive preseason favorite, earning 21 first place votes and 241 total points. Richmond earned the other three first place votes and had 210 points followed by Villanova, New Hampshire, Delaware, Albany, William & Mary, Stony Brook, Maine,  Towson, Elon, and Rhode Island. Richmond, New Hampshire, and Villanova also advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2016.
James Madison quarterback Bryan Schor was named the preseason Offensive Player of the Year while Villanova safety Rob Rolle earned CAA preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Despite consecutive four-win seasons and a 10th place finish in the league standings, Delaware earned the solid preseason ranking, leaping in front of four teams that had better overall records a year ago. The coaching pedigree of Rocco, who led Richmond to NCAA Tournament appearances each of the last three seasons before arriving at Delaware last December, combined with the Blue Hens returning 19 of 22 starters, certainly had a lot to do with it.
“We are going to go to work and try to do everything we can to better our program, better our product, and prepare ourselves to win and have success on a daily basis,” said Rocco, who is 90-42 in 11 seasons as a head coach and led Richmond to a 10-4 mark and an NCAA quarterfinal appearance a year ago. “When all is said and done, the thing you want to be is relevant in November. I believe we have a great opportunity to be relevant come November. We have to do that first before we take that next step. Hopefully this team is ready to accept that challenge.”
Bell, Kern, and Nichols, each of whom earned All-CAA honors a year ago, are among 20 seniors who will lead a unit looking to return to postseason play for the first time since the 2010 squad advanced to the national championship game.
Bell, a two-time All-CAA selection, an All-East pick a year ago, and a two-time team captain, has led the team in tackles each of the last two seasons. A year ago he made 94 stops, had 11.5 tackles for loss, intercepted a pass, and broke up three others.
Kern, a second team All-CAA pick in 2016 and a third team selection in 2015, will also serve as a team captain this fall, his fifth in a Blue Hen uniform. He will start at center for the third straight year and enters the season having started 28 straight games. He is one of three returning starters on an offensive line that allowed a CAA-low 11 sacks and helped the unit rank No. 2 in the CAA in rushing at 227.2 yards per game.
Nichols, a second-year starter, earned All-CAA honors for the second time a year ago when he recorded 25 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. He also had a team-high five pass breakups and recorded a safety against Albany.
“We just need to put our heads down and go to work and not worry about where we are in the rankings and not worry about what has happened the last two years,” said Kern. “We have the experience and the new guys who have come in are fitting in well. The sky is the limit for us and we are looking to move up.”
Delaware will report to camp this Thursday, July 26 and will hit the UD Practice Fields for the first time on Friday, July 27 at 2:15 p.m.
The season opener is set for Thursday, Aug. 31 against in-state rival Delaware State at 7 p.m. at Delaware Stadium. Graduated seniors Coley Ricci (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Jamie Schwartz (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) joined rising seniors Sarah Ashwood (Manchester, Md./Hereford), Becky Gohsler (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Sara Laudermilch (Exton, Pa./Henderson) in being acknowledged for their work in the classroom during the 2016-17 campaign.
Schwartz was named to the honor roll for the second time in her career while Ashwood, Gohsler, Laudermilch and Ricci earned the accolades for the first time.
"Delaware continues to attract talented, hardworking committed student-athletes with diverse academic interests," stated head coach Kateri Linville. "It is nice to see our team honored for their pursuit of academic excellence after achieving a program best team GPA (3.425) and to have several of our upperclassmen receive recognition for their performance in each of their majors of interest including chemical engineering, communications, education, exercise science and nursing."
Student-athletes who had a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or greater and have obtained at least junior standing academically received the honors.
The Hens were tabbed an Academic Honor Squad for the fifth straight season and were one of 97 Division I programs that registered a team GPA of 3.0 or higher last year.

Schwartz was named to the honor roll for the second time in her career while Ashwood, Gohsler, Laudermilch and Ricci earned the accolades for the first time.
"Delaware continues to attract talented, hardworking committed student-athletes with diverse academic interests," stated head coach Kateri Linville. "It is nice to see our team honored for their pursuit of academic excellence after achieving a program best team GPA (3.425) and to have several of our upperclassmen receive recognition for their performance in each of their majors of interest including chemical engineering, communications, education, exercise science and nursing."
Student-athletes who had a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or greater and have obtained at least junior standing academically received the honors.
The Hens were tabbed an Academic Honor Squad for the fifth straight season and were one of 97 Division I programs that registered a team GPA of 3.0 or higher last year.

Norfolk, Va. (July 28, 2017) --- Ten Delaware State players have garnered MEAC preseason recognition for the upcoming football season.

Five Hornets were named to the 2017 preseason All-MEAC Second Team, while five others received All-MEAC Third Team recognition, in voting by league head coaches and sports information directors announced today.

Topping Delaware State’s All-MEAC preseason honorees are running back Mike Waters, a 2016 All-MEAC Third Team selection. Waters was also selected as HERO Sports FCS Freshman All-America after finishing third in the MEAC in rushing with a DSU freshman record 820 yards (74.5 ypg) last season. His rookie season was also highlighted by a Hornet freshman record 224-yard performance vs. Howard in last year’s finale.

Joining Waters on the preseason All-MEAC Second Team are teammates wide receiver Mason Rutherford (sr.),linebacker Malik Harris (sr.) and offensive linemen Joshua Fala (so.) and Cade Pedro (so.).

Rutherford, also a 2016 All-MEAC Third Team selection, was fourth in the league in receiving yards (51.4 pg) and fifth in receptions (3.8 pg) in 2016.

Harris was tops on the Hornets and sixth in the MEAC in tackles (7.5 pg) as a junior last season. He has led the team in tackles in each of the last two years.

Fala and Pedro helped pave the way for two of the MEAC top five rushers in 2016. The duo was also key to the Hornets’ No. 6 MEAC ranking in rushing yards (128.4 ypg) last season, the team’s best showing in eight years.

Delaware State players selected to the 2017 Preseason All-MEAC Third Team are: RB/KR Brycen Alleyne (jr.), linebacker Brian Cavicante (so.), cornerback Keyjuan Selby (jr.), placekicker Wisdom Nzidee (sr.) and punter Fidel Romo-Martinez (so.).

South Carolina State linebacker Darius Leonard (r-sr.) was selected as the 2017 MEAC Preseason Defensive Player-of-the-Year, while Howard running back Anthony Philyaw (sr.) earned top offensive player honors.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Former University of Delaware field hockey standout Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) was selected Tuesday as one of two student-athletes from the Colonial Athletic Association to be nominated for the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year award.
The NCAA Woman of the Year program honors the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of graduating female college athletes. To be eligible, a nominee must have competed and earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport, must have completed eligibility in her primary sport and must have earned her undergraduate degree by the 2017 summer term.
“I’m extremely honored to have been nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award,” exclaimed Peet. “It has been an amazing experience to be a part of such a great team and staff. The University of Delaware has given me many opportunities over the past four years and I have grown both on and off the field. Helping build a National Championship program is an experience that will stick with me for the rest of my life.”
A three-time NFHCA All-American and the 2016 CAA Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Peet led the Blue Hens to four CAA Tournament trophies, two CAA regular season titles and the 2016 NCAA Division I Championship during her four seasons at Delaware.
Peet, a two-time team captain, graduated cum laude in May 2017 with a Bachelor of Science degree in operations management. She is looking to pursue a Master of Science in business information management from Erasmus University (Rotterdam, The Netherlands).
“UDFH would like to congratulate and thank Esmée for all that she has done for herself, our team, our program and the University of Delaware,” remarked UD head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. “Esmée has been an outstanding Blue Hens student-athlete and ambassador for our institution, but even more impressive, she is a great leader, team player and competitor. Eligible female student-athletes are nominated by their member school to their respective conferences with each conference office submitting no more than two nominees to the NCAA. The NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee chooses the Top 30 (10 from each division) and then three finalists from each division. The Committee on Women’s Athletics selects the winner from the Top 9.

Dover, Del. (August 1, 2017) --- Single-game tickets are now on sale for Delaware State’s four 2017 home football contests at Alumni Stadium.

Fans can reserve their seats online or at the Hornet ticket office in Memorial Hall on the DSU campus. Season ticket packages are also still available.

Delaware State kicks off its 2017 home schedule on Sep. 23 against Norfolk State. The Hornets will host long-time rival Howard in the annual Homecoming contest on Oct.14. South Carolina State (Oct. 21) and Morgan State (Nov. 11) will also visit Alumni Stadium this year.

All 2017 Delaware State home football contests are scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

Single-game parking is $10 in lots 1 & 4 only. Homecoming parking is $20 for all lots except No. 16, which is free.

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware baseball program has added veteran coach Scott Grimes to its coaching staff, head coach Jim Sherman announced Monday.
Grimes, who will serve in the volunteer assistant coach role, will be responsible for baserunning, outfielders, camps/showcases, and will assist with the hitters.
“We are extremely excited and fortunate to have a coach like Scott join our coaching staff here at the University of Delaware,” Sherman said. “I feel he’s one of the top young coaches in our region. He brings a wealth of knowledge from both his playing days and from coaching. I know our players will enjoy working with him as he brings a great passion to the game.”
Grimes joins the Blue Hens after spending the last five seasons at nearby La Salle University. A 2005 graduate of Keystone University, Grimes spent eight seasons in professional baseball, appearing for the Worcester Tornadoes of the Can-Am League and the York Revolution of the Atlantic League.
Grimes made a major impact during his three years with the Revolution, as the Kennett Square, Pa. native holds the franchise mark for stolen bases (67), runs (296), triples (13), walks (200) and games played (347). The former outfielder also ranks second in Revolution history with 45 homers.
“I am very excited to continue my coaching career at the University of Delaware,” Grimes said. “It is an absolute honor to be a part of such a respected university and baseball program. I am extremely grateful to Jim Sherman for giving me the opportunity to work with such a talented staff and group of players.”

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s basketball team will play six home games including a highly anticipated clash against Atlantic Coast Conference power Notre Dame as the Blue Hens announced their 2017 non-conference schedule on Wednesday.
Delaware, led by second-year head coach Martin Ingelsby, kicks off the campaign at Richmond for the second time in the last five years as the Blue Hens travel to Richmond on Friday, Nov. 10. UD will face a challenging opponent in its opener, as the Spiders tied for third place in the Atlantic 10 last year, advanced to the conference tournament semifinals and moved on to the Postseason NIT quarterfinals.
UD heads to Bradley for the second consecutive year on Tuesday, Nov. 14, looking for its second straight victory in Peoria after last year’s 63-49 triumph over the Braves. The Blue Hens return to Newark to host local foe Wesley College in the home opener on Friday, Nov. 17, as part of the UNCG Tournament in what will be the first ever contest between the First State opponents.
Delaware will then continue play in the UNCG Tournament on Nov. 20-22 in Greensboro, N.C., taking on the host Spartans along with North Carolina Wesleyan and Longwood. UNCG will be a formidable opponent, as the Spartans tied for first place in the Southern Conference, advanced to the league tournament final and participated in the Postseason NIT last season.
The Blue Hens return home on Monday, Nov. 27 to host Yale, looking for revenge following the Bulldogs’ 81-63 victory over UD last year in New Haven, Conn. Yale finished in third place in the Ivy League standings a year ago, before advancing to the conference tournament final. Delaware will then make the short trip to Annapolis, Md. to face Navy on Friday, Dec. 1. Although the Blue Hens and Midshipmen have played 30 times in school history, this year’s matchup will be the schools’ first meeting since 1993.
Delaware then welcomes Mid-American Conference member Buffalo to the Bob Carpenter Center on Wednesday, Dec. 6, which will feature the Bulls’ first ever visit to Newark.
The Blue Hens will then host Atlantic Coast Conference power Notre Dame, led by former UD head coach Mike Brey, on Saturday, Dec. 9 in one of the most highly anticipated games in school history. That contest will feature Ingelsby, a four-year member of the Notre Dame squad from 1997-2001, facing Brey after spending 13 seasons on the Fighting Irish sideline as an assistant coach. Notre Dame tied for third place in the ACC a year ago, advanced to the conference tournament final, competed in the NCAA Tournament Round of 32, and finished the year ranked No. 20 in the final USA Today Coaches Poll.
Delaware then renews its rivalry with Delaware State on Sunday, Dec. 17 in Dover, as the Blue Hens and Hornets will face off for the ninth consecutive season. UD hosts CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday, Dec. 20, welcoming a tough Roadrunners squad that won the WAC regular season title a year ago and advanced to the Postseason NIT semifinals.
Following an eight-day holiday break, Delaware concludes its non-league slate on Thursday, Dec. 28 by hosting Cornell, its second Ivy League opponent of the season.
The 18-game Colonial Athletic Association schedule, featuring home and home series with the other nine conference schools, is expected to be announced later this month.

Dover, Del. (Aug. 12, 2017) --- The Delaware State football team took another step today in its 2017 season preparation. The Hornets wrapped their first full week of preseason camp with a contact scrimmage at Alumni Stadium this morning.

“I was really pleased with the intensity and the execution was generally sharp on both sides of the ball, said Hornet third-year head coach Kenny Carter. “I’ll have a better evaluation after watching film, but overall it was a good scrimmage, especially considering the number of newcomers on the team and the brief time we’ve had on the field.”

Freshman Jack McDaniels (Lofton, Va.) and sophomore Keenan Black (Concord, N.C.) took the majority of snaps at quarterback in the scrimmage.

The running duties were primarily handled by junior Brycen Alleyne (Wilmington, Del.) and redshirt freshman Nyfease West (Lansdale, Pa.), each of whom appeared at full strength after recovering from knee injuries. Alleyne rushed for two touchdowns and caught several passes out of the backfield, while West had two first down runs during the scrimmage. West, a 4,000 yard rusher at Lansdale (Pa.) High School, sat out the 2016 season after suffering the injury in preseason camp.

“Brycen and Nyfease had some quality plays today,” said Carter. “Each will be vital to our offensive game plan this season.”

The new look receiving corps also provided some good competition during the scrimmage. Veterans Fatu Sua-Godinet (so.; Honolulu, HI), Taronn Selby (jr.; Bear, Del.) and Jordan Hannah (so.; Rockaway Beach, N.Y) were frequent targets, in addition to newcomers Michael Credele (fr.; Glasgow, Del.) and Kwannah Kollie (fr.; Staten Island, N.Y.), along with tight end Isiah Williams (so.; Bronx, N.Y.). The performance of the Hornet defense was highlighted by aggressive play that forced four turnovers during the scrimmage.

During the second series plays, linebacker Brian Cavicante (so.; Portsmouth, Va.) intercepted a tipped pass by McDaniels in the red zone for what would have been a touchdown on the return.

Two series later, defensive lineman Daman Atwater-Stephens (so.; Fort Washington, Md.) scored a touchdown on a sack and strip inside the offense 10-yard line.

Linebacker Malik Harris (sr.; Washington, D.C.) recovered a fumble on a botched snap and cornerback Issiah Small (so.; Miami, Fla.) recorded an interception for the DSU defense during the scrimmage.

The Hornets will hold a walk through on Sunday (Aug. 13) and the next full practice session is set for Monday (Aug. 14) at 4 p.m.

The next scrimmage is scheduled for next Sat. (Aug. 19) at Alumni Stadium.

The Hornets open the 2017 season on Aug. 31 at Delaware. Game time is 7 p.m. at Tubby Raymond Field in Newark.

Delaware State’s home opener is set for Sep. 23 against Norfolk State. The Hall-of-Fame Day contest starts at 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Delaware State is hoping the 2017 season marks the beginning of a turnaround for its volleyball program. The Hornets are counting on several solid veterans and an athletic group of newcomers in their quest to return the program to respectability in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this season.

Third-year head coach Whitney Johnson squad is expected to return nine experienced players from last year’s squad, including four starters.

Topping the list of returners is defensive specialist Alliyah McBean (sr.), who was tops on the team and third in the MEAC in digs at 4.09 per set (376 total) in 2016. She was also second on the Hornets with 15 service aces last season. McBean has recorded 809 digs in her three seasons with the Hornets.

Delaware State has a reliable setter in senior Gabriella Enriquez, entering he second season with the team after transferring from New Mexico Military Academy in 2016. Enriquez was the Hornets’ leader and ranked 10th in the MEAC in assists at 6.19 per set (446) despite missing six contests due to injury last season. She’s also one of the team’s top servers, collecting 14 aces in 2016.

The Hornets are also counting on another 2016 JUCO transfer, outside hitter Sabina Szmajduch (sr.), to emerge as a bigger threat this season. Szmajduch, who also missed six matches due to injury last season, was No. 1 on the Hornets with 157 total kills in 2016 (2.21 per set).

The 2017 Hornets will also rely on versatile middle blocker NaKia Jones (jr.) this season. Jones was fourth on the Hornets with 94 kills (1.42 p/s) and second in blocks with 43 (0.65 p/s) as a junior last year.

Delaware State is also expected to be bolstered by the return of a healthy Sydney Armbrister (jr.), whose 2016 season was cut short by injury. Before the injury, Armbrister was second on the team in kills per set at 1.72 (86 total). She also had 70 digs and 22 blocks in her abbreviated 2016 season.

Senior Morgan Tennant, listed as a setter, became the Hornets’ most consistent server in her first season with the team in 2016. Tennant was tops on the Hornets with 23 services aces (0.31 per set) and chipped in with 135 assists in part-time duty last season.

Outside hitter Danyelle Tucker (jr.) also returns after recording 53 kills, 83 digs and 14 blocks as a sophomore in 2016.

The 2017 newcomers include a middle blocker, setter, outside hitter and libero.

Leimaluhia Taula (jr.), a former teammate of Gabriella Enriquez at New Mexico Military Academy, is a newcomer at the libero position for the Hornets this season. She helped lead NMMA to a regional championship in 2016. Taula was also a high school and club/AAU standout in Utah before her junior college career.

Outside hitter Mayah Ngundam (fr.) helped lead Bowie (Md.) High School to a better than .900 win percentage, along with four county and regional championships during her four-year scholastic career.

Middle blocker (fr.) Kiera Holtzclaw joins the Hornets this season after a stellar career Arundel (Md.) High School. During her scholastic career, Holtzclaw was an All-County First Team selection and helped lead her team to two regional championships.

The Hornets also welcome incoming setter Jade Williams (fr.) to the team after a standout career at Bishop McNamara High School in Maryland. She was the conference leader in digs and ranked in the state in service aces as a senior in 2016.

“I believe we have addressed our most pressing needs for the upcoming season with the new signees,” said Johnson. “Each of the newcomers is capable of improving our team right away.”

Delaware State opens the 2017 season against host Morehead State in the Morehead Invitational on Aug. 25. The home opener is Sep. 20 vs, Quinnipiac.

Dover, Del. (Aug. 17, 2017) --- The 2017 Delaware State women’s soccer season begins this weekend. The Hornets, under second-year head coach Kortney Rhoades, will play their season opener on Friday at Marist. Game time is 7:00 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Game two of the new season is at home on Sunday (Aug. 20) against Wagner. The contest begins at 2:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Rhoades, a high school star at Padua Academy in Wilmington and a college standout at the University of South Carolina, led the Hornets to a 4-9-2 record in her first season at DSU in 2016, the fourth best win total in the team’s 15-year history.

The Hornets return 13 letterwinners, led by a solid sophomore class, from the 2016 team, while adding four newcomers.

The returning players include last year’s leading scorer, sophomore forward Braxton Clark (New Hampton, N.Y.) , who led the team with three goals and six points in 2016.

Sophomore forward Alexa Gibbs (Hamden, Con.) also returns. Gibbs was tied for second on the Hornets with two goals and tied for third with four points last season.

Another second-year player, Jasmine Warren (Manassas, Va.), was tied for the team high with two assists, while contributing a goal in her freshman campaign.

Rounding out the Hornets’ talented sophomore class are: Samantha Wanzor (Jackson, N.J.), Katrina Silva (Peabody, Mass.), Olivia Bullaro (Whitestone, N.Y.) and Toni Washington (Abington, Pa.).

Wanzor had a goal and assist (3 points), while Silva and Washington each tallied an assist.

Sussex Tech High School product Leslie Fazio (jr.; Lewes, Del.) will assume full-time goal keeping duties this season after appearing in seven matches as a sophomore in 2016. Fazio recorded 27 saves (.750 save pct.) and combined on one shutout last season.

Seniors Kalyn Fauntleroy (New Castle, Del. and McKenzie Miller (Cherry Hill, N.J.), along with Juniors Samantha Bahr (Toms River, N.J.), Kayleigh Leschinski (Tom River, N.J.) and Jenna Wallace (Brick, N.J.) bring valuable experience to the team.

Leschinski was tied for second on the Hornets in goals (2) and points (5), while Bahr tallied a goal and assist last season.

The 2017 Hornet newcomers include record-setting scorer Daijah Norris from Suffolk, Va. (Nansemond HS). Norris tallied 67 goals and 50 assists during her scholastic career, including a school-record 28 goals in her junior year.

Kori Johnson (Felton, Del.), a multi-sport standout at Lake Forest High School, along with former Padua Academy standout Julia Detwiler (Townsend, Del.) and Sierra Turner (Chesapeake, Va.) are also new to the Hornets this season.

Marist, also playing its season opener on Friday, was 10-9-1 in 2016, including a victory at Delaware State. The Red Foxes were picked to finish fifth in the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason poll.

RICHMOND, Va. -- The University of Delaware men’s soccer program was projected to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association this season in a vote of the league coaches, the conference announced Thursday afternoon.
The defending CAA champion Blue Hens, who have appeared in five of the last six CAA Tournament finals and appeared in three NCAA Tournaments over that span, also had five players selected to the CAA Preseason all-conference team.
Junior midfielder Robert Gillin (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), redshirt junior goalie Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), senior captain and defender Thibault Philippe (Saint Brieuc, France/Lycee Notre-dame Guigamp), sophomore midfielder Fede Prieto (Las Rozas de Madrid, Spain/IES Carmen Conde), and junior captain and defender John Schroeder (Houston, Tex./Philadelphia Union Academy) were all selected.
“Overall, our program has been to three consecutive CAA Championship games, so accolades are not new for each of these lads,” head coach Ian Hennessy said. “As the coach of this team, I always feel that all of our guys should be in the mix for any conference awards or recognition. In the end, having the most players selected to the all-conference team is a nice tip of the hat by all the CAA coaches, as our league is filled with terrific players. Being selected in the bottom half of our conference is fair, as we have to replace very productive players with some new faces. I hope that our guys can overcome the challenge of replacing the guys that have moved on, and draw confidence from the fact that they train daily with some of the top players in the conference.”
The young Blue Hens will look to replace impact players Guillermo Delgado and Thomas de Villardi, who were selected 27th (Chicago Fire) and 42nd (Minnesota United), respectively in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. Delgado, a four-time All-American and the 2016 CAA Player of the Year, capped his career as the all-time UD leader in goals (49) and points (117).
William & Mary was projected to win the conference (61 points, five first place votes) while Hofstra was chosen second (52, 3). UNCW (49, 1) and Elon (45) were selected third and fourth. Delaware (40) was selected fifth while James Madison and College of Charleston shared sixth, recording 23 points each. Northeastern (20) and Drexel (11) rounded out the nine-team poll.
Antonio Bustamante of William & Mary was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year.
Delaware opens the season on Monday, Aug. 28 at home against Bryant. Kickoff from Grant Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Dover, Del. (Aug. 19, 2017) --- Delaware State head football coach Kenny Carter says the Hornets are “right on course” following the team’s second preseason scrimmage at Alumni Stadium this morning.

The 100-play offensive vs. defense scrimmage focused on various game situations, including short yardage, long field, red zone, third down and overtime.

“I’m most pleased with the physicality and intensity on both sides of the ball,” said Carter, in his third year as head coach of the Hornets. “There were some good battles at the point of attack today, with both the offensive and defensive lines making their share of impressive plays.”

Freshman Jack McDaniels (Lorton, Va.) and sophomore Keenan Black (Concord, N.C.) shared the quarterback duties during second scrimmage. The pair had an equal number of plays with the first and second string offensive units.

Carter indicates he’ll likely wait until the week of the season opener at Delaware on Aug. 31 before announcing his starting quarterback.

“Jack and Keenen are both good athletes and becoming more comfortable in our system each day,” Carter said. “Each has a skill set that fits our system. The competition has been healthy for both players, along with the rest of the offense.”

The running back trio of Brycen Alleyne (jr.; Wilmington, Del.), Mike Waters (so.; Phila., Pa.) and Nyfease West (r-fr.; Lansdale, Pa.) handled the bulk of the carries during the scrimmage. Each had big yardage plays, by the run or pass, in the scrimmage.

“I’m excited about the potential for our running game this season,” Carter said. “Each of those backs possess big play ability and our young offensive line has made good progress throughout camp. The ability is there, in the backfield and along the line. It’s now a matter of staying focused and continuing to improve our execution.”

The Hornet defense was most effective against the pass, while also forcing a couple of turnovers in the scrimmage. The defensive front seven was singled out by the Hornet head coach for its play during preseason camp.

“The front line and linebackers are the most physical we’ve had since I arrived.” Carter said. “Guys like Ulises De Los Santos (so.; Union City, N.J.), (Towson transfer) Caleb Hebron (r-so. Jersey City, N.J.) and Damon Atwater-Stephens (Ft. Washington, Md.) up front, along with linebackers Malik Harris (sr.; Washington, D.C.) and Brian Cavicante (so.; Portsmouth, Va.) have set the tone for the aggressive play of our defense this preseason.”

After the 2017 opener at Delaware, the Hornets will visit Hampton (Sep. 8) and West Virginia (Sep. 16) before playing their first home game on Sep. 23 against Norfolk State.

HORNETS SUFFER OVERTIME HEARTBREAK IN HOME OPENER Dover, Del. (Aug. 20, 2017) --- The Delaware State women’s soccer team played even with Wagner for nearly 103 minutes before sudden heartbreak in the Hornets’ 2017 home opener at Alumni Stadium this afternoon. Wagner goal keeper Delaney Beck scored from 39 yards out on a free kick in the second overtime to give the Seahawks a 2-1 victory.

Beck left her goal keeper post for the free kick on the opposite side of the field. Her line drive kick sailed to the left of a diving Delaware State goalie Leslie Fazio for the score, ending the match with 7:13 left in the second overtime period.

The loss overshadowed a valiant effort by the Hornets, who posted more shots (8-7) and shots on goal in the match (5-3).

After a scoreless first period, Wagner drew first blood when Taylor Wasserman scored from close range off a corner kick by Kim Fetto in the 61st minute.

Delaware State (0-2) kept the Seahawks at bay until Samantha Bahr scored from near the net following a free kick by Samantha Wanzor to tie and match in the 80th minute, and give the Hornets their first goal of the season. The goal was the third for Bahr at DSU.

Wagner improved to 1-0-1 this season.

The Hornets return to action on Friday (Aug. 25) against Navy. The 7 p.m. match will be played at the new DE Turf Sports Complex on U.S. 113 in Frederica, Delaware.

Dover, DE (Aug. 22, 2017) --- The new DE Turf Sports Complex in Frederica will serve as the second home of the Delaware State women’s soccer team during the 2017 season. The Hornets will play three contests at the multipurpose sports complex on Route 1, beginning this Friday against Lafayette (Aug. 25) at 7 p.m.

DE Turf will also host Delaware State soccer’s Sep. 14 match vs. George Washington (7 p.m.) and the Hornets’ Oct. 9 contest against Loyola-Md. (7 p.m.).

Delaware State University will provide bus transportation for DSU students attending the games.

The 85-acre state-of-the-art sports complex consists of 12 synthetic turf fields for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey rugby and ultimate Frisbee.

Since opening last spring, DE Turf has hosted numerous youth, high school and regional events, including championship competitions.

The Delaware State women’s lacrosse team has also scheduled contests at DE Turf during its 2018 season.

Dover, Del. (Aug. 22, 2017) --- Delaware State Athletics, in cooperation with website partner NeuLion, has expanded its live video offerings of Hornet sports this fall.

Beginning with the Delaware State women’s soccer contest against Lafayette on Sep. 1, most Hornet home sporting events on campus will be streamed live on the school’s athletics website DSUHornets.com free of charge.

In addition to soccer, all volleyball and football contests on campus will be streamed live this fall, along with men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s lacrosse this winter.

A select number of baseball and softball contests will be available for viewing in the spring.

“The expansion of our live video streaming is a great service to Hornet fans and alumni around the world, especially the families of our student-athletes who are unable to attend the games,” said Skip Perkins, Delaware State Director of Athletics. “The service also allows greater exposure for the Hornet brand and an opportunity to share the great things about our university.”

Dover, Del. (Aug. 24, 2017) --- Delaware State athletes are already winners in the eyes of new DSU students and their families. Hornet athletes today continued their tradition of assisting students moving into the dormitories for the upcoming semester.

Members of the Delaware State football, soccer, equestrian and cross country/track & field teams rose early this morning to greet their newest schoolmates upon their arrival on campus.

According to several players who greeted new students and families before 8 a.m. today, “This is our way of giving back to the University while welcoming new students to Delaware State. It's a Hornet tradition."

Delaware State athletes will also greet new students during the “Swarm Assembly” Friday morning in Memorial Hall. The “Approaching Storm” Marching Band and Hornet cheerleaders will also join in the festivities.

Klondike Kate’s will once again serve as host of weekly coaches radio shows throughout the football and basketball seasons. Dover, Del. (Aug. 24, 2017) --- Delaware State University joins the family of John C. Martin in announcing the passing of the former University Director of Athletics on Aug. 24 at age 85.

Martin was appointed by then Delaware State College President Luna I. Mishoe to head the Hornets’ athletics department in 1985. He held the position until 1996.

During Martin’s tenure, Delaware State’s men’s and women’s programs was each recognized as tops in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, while Hornet teams captured a total of 11 MEAC championships.

In 1987, Delaware State received the MEAC’s Mary McLeod Bethune All-Sports Award for overall excellence in women’s sports. The Hornets were presented with the Talmadge Hill Award for overall excellence in men’s sports in 1990.

Under Martin’s leadership, the Hornets won four MEAC football championships (1987, ’88, ’89, ’91), along with conference titles in volleyball (1986), men’s and women’s indoor track and field (1987), baseball (1989), men’s cross country (1989), women’s cross country (1990) and men’s outdoor track & field (1992).

Martin was Director of Athletics when the softball program was formed at Delaware State in 1992. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the school’s Athletics Compliance Office and a major proponent of the NCAA’s Academic Enhancement Program, which provides funding for academic assistance at member institutions.

In addition, he helped spearhead successful football classic contests featuring the Hornets at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich., in 1992 and Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia in 1994.

Martin also helped negotiate the first athletics competition between Delaware State and University of Delaware teams. The Hornets defeated the Blue Hens in men’s basketball 99-95 in the first head-to-head meeting between teams from the state’s two Division I schools in 1991.

He was inducted into the Delaware State University Athletics Hall-of-Fame in 2001.

Before coming to Delaware State, Martin was Director of Athletics and highly decorated Head Men’s and Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Coach at Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be released.

Frederica, Del. (Aug. 25, 2017) --- Delaware State allowed an early goal and another later in the opening period to overshadow an otherwise solid defensive effort in a 2-0 women’s soccer loss to Navy at the DE Turf Sports Complex Friday evening.

A little more than three minutes into the contest (3:07), the Midshipmen scored the first goal of the match when Ash Fairow fired a shot over the head of DSU goal keeper Leslie Fazio. Cadie Higginson and Baseley McClaskey were credited with assists on the score, Navy’s first of the season.

Despite being on the defensive for much of the next 30-plus minutes, the Hornets kept the Midshipmen off the board.

Navy (1-2) broke through again when Eleanor Pratt scored off a feed from Natalie Dzhandzhapanyan in the 38th minute to give the Mids a 2-0 lead.

The Hornets could not get off a shot in the opening period, but had a scoring chance early in the second frame, however, Kayleigh Leschinski’s attempt in the 51st minute was just to the left of the net.

Navy had five shot attempts in the second period, but was kept off the board in the final 45 minutes of the contest. Fazio had four saves in the second period and six in the match for the Hornets.

Delaware State (0-3) managed four shots in the second period, two of which were saved by Navy keeper Sydney Fortson.

Friday’s match was the first of three Delaware State contests scheduled for DE Turf this season. The Hornets will face George Washington on Sep. 14 and Loyola-Md. On Oct. 9 at the new Kent County sports complex.

DSU is back in action on Sunday at Yale. The match begins at 10 a.m. in New Haven, Conn.

The Hornets are back at their Alumni Stadium home on the DSU campus on Fri. Sep. 1 against Lafayette at 7 p.m.

The No. 3 Blue Hens (1-0) registered their program-record 20th straight win as Delaware posted a shutout in the season opener for the first time since 2007.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The No. 3 ranked University of Delaware field hockey team saw its 20-game unbeaten streak snapped Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens fell to the 9th-ranked Louisville Cardinals 3-1 at Trager Stadium.
The Blue Hens (1-1) who opened the season with a 7-0 win over Indiana on the same field on Saturday, fell behind early 1-0 after a Louisville goal 16 minutes into the contest.
In the 27th minute, Delaware's Kayla Devlin tallied the lone goal for the defending national champions, tying the score at 1-1.
Just seven minutes later, the Cardinals (2-0) took the lead for good when Minout Mink scored her first of two goals on the afternoon. Mink added her second goal of the match in the 51st minute to give the Cardinals a 3-1 lead.
The loss is Delaware’s first in nearly a year, as the Blue Hens last fell at Princeton on Sept. 11, 2016. The Blue Hens and Cardinals met in the NCAA Tournament a season ago with Delaware taking the match 1-0.

New Haven, Conn. (Aug. 27, 2017) --- Delaware State was stride-for-stride with Yale for nearly 48 minutes before the Bulldogs took control for a 3-0 victory at Reese Stadium today. The first period was dominated by the defenses as neither team managed to get off a shot.

Less than three minutes into the second period , Yale’s Michelle Alozie scored the first goal of the match on a cross from Hanna Coy.

The Bulldogs doubled their lead when Alozie scored from close range for her second goal of the match in the 54th minute. Coy and Kristi Wharton were credited with assists on the score.

Yale closed out the scoring when Alexandra McCraven passed to Sarah Jordan for a shot that went off the leg of a Delaware State defender and into the net in the 87th minute.

After holding the Bulldogs without a shot in the opening period, the Hornets allowed 16 attempts in the final 45 minutes, including six on goal.

Delaware State goal keeper Leslie Fazio recorded three saves, each in the second period.

The Hornets had three shots in the match, all in period two. Alexa Gibbs fired off DSU’s lone shot on goal.

Yale improved to 2-0 this season. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 1-0 victory over Connecticut.

Delaware State (0-4) returns to action on Wed. (Aug. 31) at St. Peter’s. The contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Jersey City, N.J.

The Hornets are back home on Sep. 1 against Lafayette. The match starts at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Poarch Schroeder and Morton lead Blue Hens to Opening Night 2-0 Win Over Bryant


NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware turned in a complete performance Monday night, downing Bryant University 2-0 at Grant Field.


In the season opening victory the Blue Hens (1-0) received major contributions up and down the roster. Senior captain Thibault Philippe registered a penalty kick goal, while fellow captain John Schroeder tallied an assist. New Blue Hen Chad Poarch added his first career goal, while Chad Morton tallied another clean sheet.


Delaware dominated possession in the second half, outshooting Bryant (0-2) 12-7.


In the 16th minute, Philippe converted a penalty kick, after the Bulldogs were whistled for a hand ball. The goal gave Delaware an early 1-0 lead.

After the goal neither team was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the half, and Delaware retained its 1-0 lead.


The Blue Hens doubled their lead in the 55th minute when Schroeder made a beautiful run from his right-back spot. The junior crossed a perfect ball into the box, where Poarch was able to alertly slide in and direct the ball into the back of the net.


In goal, redshirt junior Todd Morton made a pair of saves for the Blue Hens, recording his 12th career clean-sheet.


Head Coach Ian Hennessy:

“I’m very happy for all of the guys because we have a lot of new faces, and you never know how that might go,” the head coach said. “We’ve been working extremely hard, and I’m very satisfied with the way they played tonight, recording a shutout against a quality Bryant team.”


On Chad Poarch making an impact in his first career game:

“For center-forwards it’s all about confidence and goals give you confidence,” the coach added. “For him to score now both in the preseason and the regular season, I’m sure he’ll be very happy to start on a positive note.”


On moving ahead to Thursday’s match versus Temple:

“Going forward we’re going to have to improve on our rhythm, and continue to find our guys in open space. We need to continue to learn our own tendencies. Temple is a good team being from the American Conference. They’ve had a tough start to the season but I’m sure they’re going to try and change that Thursday afternoon.”


On the second goal setup by John Schroeder:

“John has continued to grow as player throughout his time here at Delaware,” he concluded. “We gave him a new role this year where we’re requiring him to cover a lot more ground. I think eventually he’ll be a professional player. Tonight again, I thought people saw the polish that he has.”


Delaware native Chad Poarch on scoring in his UD debut:

“It feels great to score in my first game here at Delaware,” the Middletown, Del. native said. “We talk about possession and moving the ball from side-to-side. I think tonight we did that well. It was great to get the first goal, and it feels great to represent my hometown and Delaware. So far it’s been great to bond with the team and they’ve been great to me so far. Everything’s been good.”


Defender Thibault Philippe:

“It’s great to start with a goal and a win. We have a lot of new guys coming in, and our goal is do better than last season’s [NCAA Tournament First Round loss to Providence]. Tonight I think we lost our identity a bit in terms of the way we played last year. In the second half I thought we were better in terms of keeping possession.”

• Morton recorded his 20th career victory tonight, and he currently needs just five more victories to become the winningest goalie in program history.
