HOMECOMING

THE GAMEDelaware State and Howard kick off the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule in the Hornets’ annual homecoming contest. DSU (1-1; 0-0 MEAC) is coming off a 58-12 thrashing of Lincoln (Pa.) last Saturday. The Hornets scored touchdowns on each of their first quarter possessions to build a 28-0 lead and were never threatened to post their fourth straight home win. Howard (0-3; 0-0) is trying to bounce back from a 41-20 loss to Hampton in a game played at Soldier Field in Chicago. The Bison won the total yardage battle 396-349, but were plagued by two turnovers and 12 penalties for 109 yards in the game.

THE HORNETS Freshman quarterback Tylik Bethea, making his first collegiate start, completed 16-of-28 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns, while wide receiver Kwannah Kollie (jr.) had nine catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns, each a career-high, to lead the Hornet offense in the Lincoln contest. Defensively, Delaware State held Lincoln to -24 yards rushing and 175 total offensive yards. The Lions did not record a first down until the opening drive of the third quarter. On special teams, Keenan Black (sr.), a former quarterback now playing on defense, returned three punts for 88 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown; and added a 61-yard kickoff return. The reigning MEAC Rookie-of-the-Week, Bethea has completed 26-of-46 passes (56.5%) for 318 yards (long 36) and three touchdowns without an interception this season. Through three weeks of the 2019 MEAC season, Bethea ranks fourth in the league in passing average (159.0 ypg) and passing efficiency (136.1 rating); fifth in total offense (152.0 ypg) and tied for third in touchdown passes. Kollie is tops in the MEAC in receiving yards at 89.0 per game (178 total) and second in the league in receptions at 6.5 per contest (13 total). Defensively, free safety Jahad Neibauer (sr.), a Preseason All-MEAC First Team selection, is tops on the team with 16 tackles, while linebacker Brooks Parker (so.) has 12. Defensive end Christian Johnson (gr.) is tied for third in the MEAC with two sacks, while fellow lineman Brandon Carswell (gr.) is tied for fifth in the league with 3.5 tackles for loss.

THE BISONHoward, led by 2019 Preseason MEAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year Caylin Newton, has been picked to finish fourth in this year’s conference race. After three weeks of the season, Newton is No. 1 in the MEAC in passing yards at 191.0 per game (573 total) and ninth in passing efficiency (108.0 eff. rating). He has thrown four touchdowns and three interceptions this year. Wide receiver Kyle Anthony leads the MEAC in receptions at 7.7 per game (23 total) and is fourth in receiving yards at 79.3 pg (238). Howard’s Dedrick Parson is third in the MEAC in rushing at 49.7 ypg. Defensively, the Bison are allowing 527.3 yards per game, due in large part to a 623-yard output by FBS opponent Maryland in the season opener.

THE SERIES (Tied 37-37-1 )The Hornets and Bison are meeting for the 62nd consecutive year and 76th time overall, making it Delaware State’s oldest rivalry.
Howard has won the last three meetings to tie the all-time series at 37-37. The Bison won last year’s battle 55-13 in Washington, D.C. Caylin Newton threw for 313 yards and five touchdowns, including three to Jequez Ezzard to lead the Bison. Ezzard had four catches for 191 yards to go along with the three scores. The last time the teams met at Delaware State, Howard posted a 52-23 win. Hornet wide receiver Trey Gross caught seven passes for a game-high 154 yards and two touchdowns in the 2017 DSU/Howard meeting. Durham, N.C. (Oct. 26, 2019) --- Delaware State’s bid for its first road win in more than five years ended with a stunning 30-23 loss to North Carolina Central in a wild Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference battle at O’Riddick-Kelly Stadium afternoon. The Eagles scored the winning touchdown on a 75-yard return by Brandon Codrington on the ensuing kickoff after the Hornets tied the score in the final minute of the contest.

Delaware State trailed 23-16 before obtaining the ball at its 48-yard line with 4:24 left in the fourth quarter. The Hornets used eight plays to march down the field and ended the drive on a fourth-down, two-yard touchdown pass from Tylik Bethea to Bizzett Woodley with 50 seconds left in regulation. Woodley was flagged for excessive celebration after the score, resulting in the Hornets kicking off from their 20-yard line after the extra point by Jose Romo-Martinez tied the score at 23.

Codrington fielded the DSU kickoff at the NCCU 25-yard line and avoided several would-be tacklers before breaking free for a touchdown with 38 seconds left to play.

There was still time for one more Delaware State possession. On the ensuing North Carolina Central kickoff, the Hornets fielded a squib kick at the DSU 48. The Hornets quickly drove 27 yards to the Eagles’ 25-yard line, but a pass by Bethea was intercepted on the final play of the game.

The interception was the second of the game for the Eagles and the fourth Delaware State turnover of the contest.

Delaware State scored first in the game when Romo-Martinez nailed a 45-yard field goal with 5:17 left in the opening quarter.

The Eagles evened the contest when Adrian Olivo kicked a 39-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

North Carolina Central took advantage of a DSU turnover to take its first lead of the game. Five plays after the Eagles recovered a fumble at the Hornets’ 41-yard line, Isaiah Totten scored a touchdown on a five-yard run to cap off a five-play drive. The extra point kick gave NCCU a 10-3 lead with 10:53 left in the second quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Delaware State’s Corahn Alleyne returned the ball 65 yards to the Eagles’ 24-yard line. Two plays later, Bethea hooked up with Woodley on a 28-yard touchdown pass for the Hornets’ first touchdown of the game. The score was 10-10 after the extra point by Romo-Martinez with 9:57 to go before halftime.

North Carolina Central responded when Davius Richard connected with Treveyon Pratt on a 74-yard touchdown catch and run on the ensuing Eagles’ possession. The extra point kick failed, giving NCCU a 16-10 lead with 8:57 left in the second quarter.

Romo-Martinez nailed his second of three field goals in the game, a 21-yarder, as time expired in the first half to cut the Eagles’ lead to 16-13.

NCCU stretched its lead to 23-13 on a touchdown pass of 20 yards from Richard to Ryan McDaniel in the third quarter.

The Hornets pulled to within 23-16 on a 24-yard field goal by Romo-Martinez with 13:35 left to play.

Thu, October 31, 2019
Dover, Del. (Oct. 31, 2019) --- Delaware State men’s basketball fans can get a sneak peek at the Hornets’ 2019-20 squad during an exhibition contest against crosstown Wesley College on Saturday (Nov. 2). Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at DSU’s Memorial Hall.

The Hornets return five letterwinners, including two starters, from their 2018-19 squad, which posted a 6-25 overall record and 2-14 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference under first-year head coach Eric Skeeters.

Among the highlights of Skeeters’ first season at the helm was the team’s first MEAC Tournament victory since 2015 with an upset of No. 6 seed Savannah State. The Hornets were eliminated from the 2019 MEAC Tournament by eventual champion North Carolina Central in the quarterfinals.

The 2018-19 Hornets also posted impressive road wins at Delaware and Coppin State in Skeeters’ first season.

Topping the list of returning DSU lettermen is point guard Pinky Wiley (jr.; 5-11), a 2019-20 All-MEAC Third Team selection.

As a sophomore in 2018-19, Wiley was third on the Hornets in scoring at 9.5 points per game, including 10.8 in MEAC contests. He was No. 1 in the MEAC in steals (2.1 pg) and fourth in assists (4.4 pg), while ranking second on the Hornets with 53 three-point field goals a year ago.

Forward Ameer Bennett (jr.; 6-8) is in his third year with the Hornets. Last season, he appeared in each game, averaging 8.2 points and 4.6 rebounds.

Ronald Lucas (so; 6-6) gained valuable experience as a true freshman in 2018-19, averaging 3.0 points and 2.1 rebounds while appearing in each game.

The Hornets will also welcome the return of forward Faheim Jenneto (so.; 6-8), who missed the last 18 games of the 2018-19 season due to a knee injury. Jenneto averaged 6.5 points and 3.1 rebounds in 13 games as a true freshman last season, highlighted by a career-high 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field (3-4 3pt. FG) vs. Longwood.

While Jenneto returns, 2018-19 returnee D’Marco Baucum is expected to miss a significant part of the season due to a foot injury suffered in preseason camp. Baucum averaged 8.2 points and 4.1 rebounds in 17 games as a freshman last season.

The list of 2019-20 Delaware State newcomers include former Baltimore high school standout John Crosby (sr.; 6-3), who sat last season after three seasons at Dayton University of the Div. I Atlantic 10 Conference.

Former Delaware high school star John “LJ” Stansbury (so,; 6-3) joins the Hornets this season. Stansbury was a standout at Hodgson Vo-Tech before a year at Kirkwood CC in Iowa.

Swingman Omari Peek-Green (fr.; 6-6) and guard Leroy Moore (so.; 5-11) also join the Hornets this season. Peek-Green was a big-time high school scorer in the state of Ohio, while Moore is a former Philadelphia high school product.

Seven-three Chris Yannick (so.) is scheduled to join the Hornets in December. The tallest player in team history, Yannick, a former ESPN four-star recruit, previously competed at Georgetown before enrolling at Delaware State in the 2018-19 school year.

The 2019-20 Delaware State men’s basketball regular season tips-off on Fri. Nov. 8 at home against Rider (7:00 p.m.). The Hornets will play 14 home games in Memorial Hall this season, including the MEAC opener on Sat. Jan. 4 against Morgan State at 2:00 p.m.

DSU’s four Saturday home MEAC contests (Jan. 4; Jan. 11; Feb. 1; Feb. 15) will tip-off at 2:00 p.m. this season, followed by the women’s game.

On Dec. 16, the Hornets will face the University of Delaware at the 76ers Fieldhouse in Wilmington. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Tallahassee, Fl. (Nov. 2, 2019) --- Delaware State cut an early 31-point deficit to 15 in the second half , but could get no closer in a 52-30 loss to nationally-ranked Florida A&M in a MEAC contest at Bragg Stadium today.

The Rattlers, ranked 17th in the major FCS national polls, won their eighth straight game to improve to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the MEAC. The Hornets have dropped seven in a row to fall to 1-8 and 0-6.

Florida A&M quarterback Ryan Stanley strengthened his case for MEAC Offensive Player-of –the-Year honors by completing 15-of-25 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Rattlers. FAMU wide receiver Xavier Smith was the recipient of three Stanley TD passes. In total, Smith had nine catches for 184 yards and the four scores.

Redshirt freshman running back Thomas Hudon-Bertrand was a bright spot for Delaware State, rushing for 120 yards and two touchdowns, each a career-high, on 20 carries.

Hornet freshman receiver Bizzett Woodley had two catches for 20 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown, his third in the last two games and team-leading fifth of the season.

After failing to get a first down on its first possession of the game, Florida A&M followed with touchdowns on each of its next four on touchdown passes by Stanley to open up a 28-0 lead.

The Rattlers led 31-0 before the Hornets scored on a 19-yard field goal by Jose Romo-Martinez with a minute to go before halftime.

Betrand-Hudon scored his first career touchdown for the Hornets on a 15-yard run to cap off an 11-play, 73-yard third quarter drive that consumed just under five minutes. The extra point kick by Romo-Martinez pulled the Hornets to within 31-10 with 5:55 left in the quarter.

On the second play of the ensuing Florida A&M possession, Delaware State’s Muadh Abdus-Salaam forced a Florida A&M fumble on a backfield tackle. The ball was recovered by DSU’s Jahad Neibauer at the Rattler 26 and returned for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 31-16 with 5:04 left in the third quarter.

Florida A&M answered with a 10-play, 73-yard touchdown drive to stretch its lead to 38-16 late in the third quarter.

Jordan Hannah returned the ensuing FAMU kickoff 46 yards to the Rattler 42 yard line. The Hornets needed just five plays to get back on the board. Bertrand-Hudon had a 30-yard run to the FAMU 12, and capped off the drive with a one-yard plunge for his second touchdown of the game. The Hornets pulled to within 38-23 after the extra point kick with 10 seconds left in the third quarter.

The momentum was quickly dashed when Florida A&M’s Marcus Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown to give the Rattlers a 45-23 lead on the final play of the third quarter.

It also marked the second week in a row that the Hornets have allowed a touchdown on a kickoff return.

Delaware State again pulled to within 15 points (45-30) after a 14-yard touchdown pass from Tylik Bethea to Woodley with 10:33 left to play, but Smith caught his fourth touchdown pass of the game midway through the fourth quarter to provide insurance for the Rattlers.

Florida A&M won the total yardage battle 465-289, although the Hornets held a 183-161 advantage in rushing yards.

Lineman Brandon Carswell was Delaware State’s leader with six tackles, including two backfield stops.

The Spartans won their third game in a row to improve to 5-6 overall and 4-3 in the MEAC. The Hornets closed out their 2019 MEAC schedule at 1-7, and are 2-9 overal. NSU also defeated Delaware State for the third year in a row, although the Hornets hold a 16-9 lead in the all-time series.

Norfolk State quarterback Juwan Carter completed 18-of-31 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns. He also led the Spartans with 44 yards rushing on nine carries.

Delaware State’s Thomas Bertand-Hudon led all players with 137 yards rushing on 25 carries, marking his third straight 100-yard game. The last Hornet with 100-or-more rushing yards in three consecutive games was Emmanual Marc, who topped the century mark vs. Concord (118), Norfolk State (130) and Howard (165) in 2006.

Bertrand-Hudon put DSU on the board first with a 48-yard touchdown run on the Hornets first play from scrimmage. The Quebec native ran through a big hole on the right side of the offensive line and sprinted untouched to the endzone. The extra point kick by Jose Romo-Martinez gave the Hornets a 7-0 lead just a minute-58-seconds into the contest.

After Norfolk State failed to score on its next possession, Delaware State used a long drive to stretch its lead. The Hornets marched 59 yards on 11 plays to the NSU six, but had to settle for a 31-yard field goal by Romo-Martinez to open up a 10-0 lead with 2:36 to go in the opening quarter.

The Spartans began their comeback with a second quarter touchdown. Carter connected with Da’Kendall James on an 11-yard touchdown pass to cap off a 13-play, 78-yard drive that consumed five-minutes-48 seconds. The extra point attempt was blocked by DSU’s Jahad Neibauer, cutting the Hornets’ lead to 10-6 at the 11:42 mark of the second quarter.

Norfolk State took advantage of a Delaware State turnover to take the lead for good. Four plays after NSU’s Devyn Coles intercepted a Tylik Bethea pass, Kevin Johnson ran to the endzone from 14 yards out to put the Spartans ahead. After the extra point, NSU led 13-10 with 7:34 left in the second quarter.

Norfolk State’s Josh Nardone nailed a 33-yard field goal with 18 seconds to go before halftime to put the Spartans ahead 16-10 at the break.

Delaware State drove to the NSU 21 after receiving the second half kickoff, but a pass by Bethea was picked off by Bobby Price, who darted 84 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. The Spartans led 23-10 after the extra point kick with 12:06 left in the third quarter.

The Hornets finally broke the Norfolk State scoring run when Bethea rushed 28 yards for a touchdown to cap off a five-play, 50-yard drive with 4:16 to go in the third quarter.

Bethea rushed for a career-high 71 yards on 10 carries in the contest, although he was successful on just five-of-15 passes for 54 yards and two interceptions.

The Hornets still only trailed 23-17 when an apparent 49-yard touchdown on a punt return by DSU’s Keenan Black was nullified by two penalties with 3:07 remaining in the third quarter.

Carter threw his second touchdown of a game, a 24-yard strike to Justin Smith, to stretch the Spartans’ lead to 30-17 with 14:02 left to play.

Nardone nailed his second field goal of the game for NSU, a 20-yarder, to close out the scoring.

Norfolk State held a slight edge in total yards, 313-303, although the Hornets had a 249 to 131 advantage in rushing yards.

Linebackers Tristin Murrin and Brooks Parker, along lineman Corey St. John, led Delaware State with six tackles each.

The Hornets wrap up their 2019 season at home against St. Francis (Pa.) of the Northeast Conference. The Senior / Military Appreciation Day contest is set for 2:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

DSU SOFTBALL ANNOUNCES 4 FUTURE HORNETS

Tue, December 03, 2019
Dover, Del. (Dec. 3, 2019) --Delaware State head softball coach Jeff Franquet has announced that four school standouts recently signed to attend the University and compete for the Hornets beginning next fall.

The signees are pitcher/ utility player McKenzie Yurcaba of Audubon (N.J.) High School, catcher McKenna Moore from Timber Creek (N.J.) Regional High School, pitcher Mayanah McIntosh of Frank J. Cicarell / Elizabeth (N.J.) High School, and infielder Madison Burnite of Gloucester Catholic (N.J.) High School.

Yurcaba is a three-time All-Colonial Conference First Team selection. She has a combined .389 batting average, 94 hits with 195 strikeouts as a pitcher entering her senior season.

She also has extensive travel ball experience, competing since 2013.

“McKenzie will bring instant depth to our pitching staff,” said Franquet. “She has a tremendous work ethic and will make an immediate impact on our program.”

Moore has been a starting varsity player since her freshman season. She was nominated for New Jersey’s Best Softball Player Award after batting .385 with 11 home runs and 29 RBI as a sophomore. That season, Moore was selected to the Carpenter Cup All-Star Team and was an All-Olympic Conference Second Team pick. She batted .448 with four homers and 16 RBI during her junior season. She was selected to the All-Olympic First Team and named to the Carpenter Cup All-Star squad for the second year in a row.

According to Franquet, “McKenna has an explosive bat and possesses a strong arm from behind the plate. She is extremely versatile and will bring a strong passion for the sport to our team.”

McIntosh is a highly decorated hurler at Cicarell / Elizabeth High School. Entering her senior year, she has 330 strikeouts in 321 innings pitched, while batting .350 at the plate. McIntosh has also earned Elite 60+ MPH Club recognition and is a three-time Watchung All-Conference selection. In addition, she is a USSSA National Fastpitch MVP and champion.

“Mayanah is a hard thrower who I expect to make an immediate impact for the Hornets. She has a tremendous upside and will be exciting to watch perform at DSU.”

Burnite has earned multiple All Tri-County First Team awards and is a team leader for a strong Gloucester Catholic program.

“Madison is a very athletic and talented infielder,” Franquet said.” She will bring a high level of skill to our infield and swings the bat very well.”

Franquet was hired as the seventh head softball coach at Delaware State last June.

“I am very excited about this group of players coming in next fall,” he said. “ In my first recruiting class, it was important for us to get talented athletes that have the same goals in mind. We wanted to recruit athletes that understand family first, school second, and softball third. This group is very gifted athletically, understands the commitment it takes to win, and will help us reach the goal of competing for Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships.”
