Jersey City, N.J. (Aug. 23, 2019) --- St. Peter’s scored less than 10 minutes into the match and never looked back in a 3-1 victory over Delaware State in the 2019 women’s soccer opener for each time this evening.
St. Peter’s midfielder Skyler Owens fired a shot past Hornet goal keeper Franchesska Ramirez just 9:56 into the contest for the first goal of the match.
Delaware State had two shots on goal in the opening period, but each was turned away from Peahen goal keeper Victoria Scarratt.
The Hornets prevented St. Peter’s from attempting another shot on goal in the first period to stay within a goal.
The Peahens struck again a little more than 10 minutes into the second period to stretch their lead. Isabel scored the goal off a feed from Julianna Murrill in the 56th minute to give St. Peter’s a 2-0 advantage.
About six minutes later (61:28), Madison Greenberg scored an unassisted goal to give the home team a 3-0 lead.
Delaware State got on the board in the 69th minute when Savannah Ay beat Scarratt to cut St. Peter’s lead to 3-1. The goal was Ay’s fifth in 20 career matches.
The Hornets outshot the Peahens in 6-5 in the second period, but Scarratt saved three to keep DSU from cutting closer.
Each team fired off eight shots in the match. Gabriel Cabrera had two shots on goal to lead all players.
St. Peter's leads the all-time series between the teams 4-3. The home team has won match.
The Hornets will continue their season opening two match road swing at Wagner on Sunday. The contest is set for 1:00 p.m. in Staten Island, N.Y.
DSU will play its home opener on Aug. 29. Start time is 4:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
