Based solely on Delaware High School Basketball performances, who's the best player u've ever seen?

70’s Terrance Stansbury
80’s AJ English
90’s John Gordon
00’s Jawan Carter
10’s Donte Divencenzo

take your pick

Even though, I am now a Salesianum fan, the best all around DE HS player I have ever seen was Dexter Boney. He played for Brandywine, 3 times first team all state & graduated in like '89. He went on to Hagerstown and the UNLV.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dexter_Boney

If Dexter came along today...with personal trainers...advanced AAU programs....and national program like prep schools.... He would have gone on to the NBA.

Now, Donte, at this point in time...looking at the big picture...2 state titles, a final 4 MVP..with a national title...and the budding NBA career is the greatest Delaware male basketball player...

My Uncle Felix...claims that Sherman Dillard of De La Warr...probably class of '61 or '62 --- was the best DE HS Bball player he ever saw. I saw him play but I was like in 5th grade so I didn't know what I was looking at...

If I am not mistake he went to Tulsa for college ball. Now, Uncle Felix is known for his exuberations. Purnell Ayers was the most dominant dominant DE HS player I have ever seen. He was a Donte in Ray Lewis's body.

When all the metrics are in...the greatest DE basketball player of all time including HS may be Elena DelleDonne. 2 WNBA MVPs, an Olympic gold medal, and a WNBA title.

This list right here.. My Cape team from 75/76 would beat Donte and them boys by 25 or better.. Lol

Yes, the entire downstate boys and girls are WAY better than upstate. Lol, not! Look at as you say “strictly by the numbers” in over 50 years of the state tournament downstate has ONLY won 8 state titles on the boys side and on the girls side downstate is even worse ONLY winning 2 state titles. So if we are only looking at “the numbers” that means downstate has only won 10% of the overall state titles. Sad, just like you and your continual reference of your high school team at Cape from 40 years ago. After 40 years and you are talking all this trash. Time to grow up! You need some help. I’ve done wasted way to much time with your BS. LOL

That Cape team was awesome. Ayers, John Bishop, Jimmy Allen, Ronson Burton, Carlton Allen, and the great Ralph Baird coaching them.

How is all of the individual attention span stuff going on here? How about staying on topic. This is about players not teams.

Start another thread on teams. I will lend my important knowledge to that thread.

WhIle I am doing my old man routine, one more thing:

GET OFF MY LAWN!!

If we are talking just individual talent I think Bones has to be considered, AJ English, Ayers, Stansbury and Delino. Charles Rayne, Tony Tucker, Booney , Bishop and Profit

If Dexter had a better supporting cast, he may have been able to land that state title.

In 2015, Donte was on a "not really good team" (direct quote from Jay Wright), yet somehow he led his 10-10 regular season team to wins in the elite 8 against: Appo 18-3, Mt 22-2, Poly 22-1. We will never see that again.

We will probably never see a team as good as the Cape 1975 team....though they won again next year it was anticlimactic.

I think you might forget some of the great Howard teams of the early 70"s. One of the great basketball games H.S. games I witnessed as the 1973 semi-final Championship overtime game between undefeated Howard and Sallies. Kenny Hynson was unstoppable that night.

That '73 Howard team was the first in the state tournament era to run the table, beating Cape to that distinction by 2 years. Kenny Hynson was Howard's first multiple time all-state selection, and his teammates (Mike Miller, Eric Fuller, David Roane) were no slouches either.

Kenny also was on John Chaney's 1978 NCAA D2 title team at Cheyney.

Walter Davis

Walter was a postgraduate player and Sanford wasn't allowed to play in the tournament at that time as they were not a full DIAA member. He was given a spot on the all state team.

I never saw Walter play when he was at Sanford.

We are drifting off topic back and forth from individuals to teams.

When I was a kid Howard had an unstoppable guy...I believe his name was Roland Spurlock. Also, Maurice Pritchett was no slouch a couple of years later at Howard....

Taking it way back Albert Horne.... Bridgeville High school or Deshields....I like Donte and Bones too
Albert Horne was a great player. Saw him personally lead Bridgeville over Seaford in the ‘68 state tourney.

Lenny Brown and Gary Lumpkin.. That full court press was hell.. That William Penn team was real.. Won Slam Dunk Power bracket .. When it was real tourney.. Lol
Along w/ Tail Davis they was real tough. I think they beat CR/Laron Profit in the State Championship that year.

Only other team from DE that I can remember winning the big bracket at the REAL Slam Dunk To The Beach was Caravel somewhere around 2008/2009.

And speaking of William Penn teams that was hell that 1999 William Penn team that beat Lake Forest (cough) in the State Championship was no slouch w/ POY Steve Smith, future POY his little brother Devin Smith was a sophomore at the time, BJ Davis & Brock Donovan.

Brian Oliver?
If we are going to mention Brians then we have to mention Brian Polk first. If this thread is solely based on high school performance in DE & what I have seen with my own eyes then he is very high up there on my list. I don’t know how many points he scored, but I would think he is close to the top in career points in DE too. I’m surprised his name hadn’t came up in this thread yet.

….Brian Polk was a helluva HS player. I think he did get outplayed by Carlos Hawkins in '00 when the played against each other in the tournament. (My memory is failing me but I think the game was at Polytech). Howard beat Sussex Tech in Tournament and Carlos Hawkins outplayed Polk.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury.....

(This conversation is supposed to be reserved to DE HS play....)

My Lord...bummy has to edit this post to add this. I was at this game 20 years ago.....I thought I didn't hallucinate this. I can remember this game but can't find my car keys....help!!!!

Read the above link or you are a communist.

Edit again...read the link! It is one of the best recaps that you will find of a DE HS basketball game.

No more posts for today...bummy has to fix a couple of accordions.

Yes correct, Carlos Hawkins did outplay Polk in the quarterfinals in 2000 at Polytech & I was in attendance. Polk didn’t play bad finished w/ 35 & Hawkins had 44 w/ a number of crazy dunks, but Polk had the better career as a DE player overall...can’t judge a career on one head-to head matchup. I believe Polk even went on to win 6th Man of the Year in the A-10 his freshman year at Temple. FYI...Hawkins was VERY good himself.

That article also says that Polk finished his career w/ 2,056 points. I’m not always big on stats provided by teams themselves, but another article on that same page said he averaged 31 pts, 11 rebs, 6 steals & 4.5 assists that year. I don’t think you will find a better stat line avg in DE even if it was anywhere near that.

@Uncle Bumfuzzled, great article find.

I was at that game too. That was a phenomenal game. Two stars laying it all out on the court.

I concur completely that Brian Polk had a Top 10 DE HS Boy Basketball career. I brought up that one game because as those who were there will attest it was unforgettable.

Having combed my failing mind, I can’t come up with a more outstanding dual between 2 DE
HS players.

The big event was coming up with that link with write ups and box scores from big Henlopen Conference games that year.

That was near the beginning of the internet era...wish we had some online reporting like that now in DE HS sports.
