2019 Capital Classic Press Release

The Capital Classic Middle School Basketball Tournament, now in it’s 14th year, is the premier middle school tournament featuring Delaware’s finest 36 boy’s and girl’s teams from 14 different school districts throughout the state.


The event will be held at venues throughout the state, which will tip off at 3:30 pm, Thursday February 7th at Central Middle School in Dover, Delaware and ending with the Championship games at Delaware State University on Saturday and Sunday February 16th and 17th.


This year’s Capital Classic currently has 6 undefeated teams playing in the event: Dover Central Middle Girls, Gauger-Cobbs Girls, Gunning Bedford Girls. Laurel Boys, Gunning Bedford Boys and Shue Medill Boys. The tournament consists of 8 brackets having A B C and D flights for both the boys and girls.


The Capital Classic has had countless former players go on to be stars in high school and college including: Benijah Laney, Corey Crawford, Anthony Myles, Eric Laster, Juwan Gray and Anthony “Champ” Mosely. The Capital Classic is presented by Gatehouse Media Publications including The Dover Post. Governor John Carney has presented awards in the past at the tournament.


On Thursday February 7th The Capital Classic commences at Central Middle School at 3:30 pm when the Holy Cross Girls (4-2) host the Chipman Girls (5-5) followed by the Crusader Boys (4-3) and the Spartan Boys (4-6) at 4:45 pm. Athletic Director Wally Seams coaches the Holy Cross Girls while Chipman A.D. Petie Davis coaches the Chipman Girls . The Crusader Boys are coached by Micheal Sanchez while the Spartan Boys are led by Dion Miller. The Chipman Boys had 6 players on Honor Roll and are led by Dorrell Little averaging 14 points per game. Jackson Starkey has a 97.4 GPA and is averaging 15 points over the last two games, both players are 7th graders. Holy Cross has 4 honors students who also lead the team in scoring, rebounds and assists: Kyle Gamber, Drew Zimmerman, Gabriel, Sanchez and Divine Taniform. At 6:00 pm The Bayard Bulldog Boys (2-3) take on the Fifer Rider Boys (3-6) followed by the Fifer Lady Riders (5-4) taking on Providence Creek Lady Saints (1-6). Bayard Boys are coached by school A.D. Omar Richardson and the Rider Boys are coached by John Wright. Wright is a 5-time bracket winner at the Capital Classic. Providence Creek Academy has several outstanding athletes including: Bruno Nyandemo, Obi Coleman, Hayden Walmsley, Jalen Anderson, Kylie Jones and Skylar Curley.


The second day of the Capital Classic also takes place at Central Middle School on Monday February 11th tipping off at 3:30 pm with the PCA Boys (0-7) visiting the Dover Air Boys (2-9). PCA is coached by Julius Williams while Dover Air Base Middle is coached by Walter Waddler. At 4:45 pm The Kirk Middle Lady Cougars (0-7) play Dover Air Lady Falcons (1-10) followed by the Kirk Boys (7-2) challenging the CMS Boys (6-3) at 6:00. The Kirk Ladies are coached by Vanessa Maxwell and Dover Air is led by Tyrone Webster. The Kirk Boys are coached by Jody Russell and the Boys at CMS are coached by Stephen Poole. Poole has a record six bracket wins to lead all coaches in the 13-year history of the tournament. At 7:15 pm, the undefeated and top seeded CMS Lady Senators (9-0) take on the visiting Lady Bluejays of Seaford (7-3). Azareya Kilgoe is the leading scorer and assist leader for CMS and also was a previous recipient of the Mike Rice Award. Kilgoe also played for Seaford during 6th grade. The Lady Senators are led by first year coach Charles Mumford while The Lady Bluejays are coached by Chandra Phillips.


Day 3 at CMS starts off at 3:30 pm with the Beacon Viking Boys (7-2) at Seaford (8-2) followed by the Beacon Lady Vikings taking on fellow Cape Henlopen rival The Mariner Middle Ladies (6-4) at 4:45 pm. The Beacon Boys are coached by Sean O’Grady while Seaford is coached by first year coach Dwayne Bivens. Brent Ricketts is an outstanding student-athlete for Seaford. The Seaford Boys won the first matchup with Beacon 29-25 back on December 17th. At 6:00 pm The Mariner Boys (8-1) face-off against the top-seeded and undefeated Laurel Bulldogs (9-0) who enter the Capital Classic for the first time. Terry Hazzard coaches Mariner while Laurel is led by Aaron Lewis. At 7:15 pm the girls’ 5th place trophy game will take place which pits the losers of the PCA vs. Fifer and Kirk vs. Dover Air games.
