#12 Pitt Opens Road Stretch Sunday at #7 Lehigh

Panthers, Mountain Hawks Clash for 64th Time in Program History

PITTSBURGH -- The 12th-ranked University of Pittsburgh wrestling team [1-1, 0-0 ACC] travels across the state Sunday, Nov. 24 to face No. 7 Lehigh [1-0, 0-0 Patriot League] in its first road dual of the season. The longtime foes will clash at 2 p.m. at Leeman Turner Arena at Grace Hall.

LAST TIME OUT

· Pitt hosted No. 3 Ohio State on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Fitzgerald Field House.

· The Panthers dropped a 23-12 decision to the Buckeyes after earning four individual wins.

· Redshirt sophomore Micky Phillippi (133), redshirt senior Taleb Rahmani (157), redshirt sophomore Nino Bonaccorsi (184) and redshirt junior Jake Wentzel (165) all earned wins in the match.

· The loss was highlighted by Wentzel recording a 3-2 decision over No. 14 Ethan Smith. Wentzel used a third period takedown to secure the win.



THE SERIES - LEHIGH

· Sunday marks the 64th meeting between the two teams.

· The two non-conference foes last met Feb. 18, 2018 at Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks defeated Pitt 25-10.

· Pitt’s last win over Lehigh came in 2013 in Bethlehem when the Panthers won 16-15.



SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN HAWKS

· Lehigh hosts Pitt as the seventh ranked team in the country this week.

· In their last time out, the Mountain Hawks upset No. 4 Oklahoma State 21-20 on the third criteria. A Cowboy forfeit at 133 pounds left the match tied. Lehigh then won with an advantage in total match points.

· Currently, six Mountain Hawks are ranked in the top 20 by Intermat with two being ranked in the top 10.

· Senior Jordan Kutler has the highest ranking in 174 pounds, standing at No. 2 in the nation. Jordan Wood is the second Lehigh wrestler ranked in the top 10 coming in at No. 6 at 285 pounds. Brandon Paetzell is No. 12 at 125 pounds, Nick Farro (133) is ranked 19th, Josh Humphreys is ranked No. 10 at 157 and Jake Jakobsen is ranked 17th at 197 pounds.

· Lehigh returns five NCAA Qualifiers, including two top-10 finishers in Kutler and Wood from a year ago. The Mountain Hawks finished tied for 13th at the NCAA Championships in Pittsburgh.

· Lehigh is led by head coach Pat Santoro. Santoro is in his 12th season with the Mountain Hawks, compiling a career 193-94-2 record.



PITTSBURGH TIES

· Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro wrestled for Pitt from 1985-92. Santoro left Pitt with a 167-13 career record, including three undefeated dual seasons.

· He is also the Panthers’ only four-time All- American.

· His 167 wins are the most all-time at Pitt. Santoro also holds the record for career falls (43) and is tied for first in single-season falls (18).

· The Panthers’ assistant coach Drew Headlee came to Pitt after a two-year volunteer assistant with Lehigh under Santoro.

· Panthers’ head coach Keith Gavin also has ties to Lehigh. After graduating from Pitt, Gavin started training for his freestyle career at the Lehigh Valley Athletic Club.



PANTHERS IN THE POLLS

· Pitt entered the season ranked No. 14 by the NWCA Coaches Poll and currently rank T-12th this week.

· Individually, six Panthers are ranked inside the top 20 individually by InterMat at their respective weight classes:

o Micky Phillippi – 133, #4

o Cole Matthews – 141, #15

o Taleb Rahmani – 157, #13

o Jake Wentzel – 165, #12

o Nino Bonaccorsi – 184, #8

o Demetrius Thomas – 285, #9


LOOKING AHEAD

· The Panthers next six competitions will be on the road and will return to Pittsburgh Sunday, Jan. 26 to host Edinboro.

· The next stop on the Panthers’ road trip is against rival West Virginia Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. in Morgantown.
