COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 7 Ohio State (4-0) cruised to a 30-7 win over No. 22 Pittsburgh (3-2) Sunday at the Covelli Center to remain undefeated in dual competition this season.
How it Happened
125 | No. 14 Mailk Heinselman (OSU) vs. No. 25 Cage Curry (PITT)
Neither wrestler was able to score in the opening period. Curry recorded the first point with an escape to start the second. Heinselman took the lead with a takedown with 30 seconds to go before Curry escaped to make it 2-all heading into the third period. Heinselman chose down to start the final two minutes and escaped then recorded a takedown near the end of regulation for the 5-2 win by decision.

133 | Dylan Koontz (OSU) vs. No. 6 Micky Phillippi (PITT)
Phillippi led 4-2 after the first period on a pair of takedowns and two Koontz escapes. There was no scoring in the second period before a Phillippi third period escape, takedown and back points made it 11-2 Phillipi, who then finished off the match on top by major decision, 14-3.

141 | No. 24 Dylan D’Emilio (OSU) vs. No. 16 Cole Matthews (PITT)
After no score following the first three minutes, Matthews got on the board with an escape to start the second. D’Emilio did the same to start the third to tie it at 1-all. He then recorded a takedown and cut Matthews loose for the 3-2 lead. Matthews and D’Emilio were each called for stalling giving D’Emilio the win by decision, 4-3.

149 | No. 2 Sammy Sasso (OSU) vs. Luke Kemerer (PITT)
Sasso recorded a takedown less than a minute into the match then another with back points to lead 8-1 after three minutes. He led 15-3 after two periods and went on to win by technical fall, 22-6.

157 | Jashon Hubbard (OSU) vs. No. 30 Elijah Cleary (PITT)
Hubbard scored first to start the second period with an escape and led 1-0 heading into the third. Hubbard earned a riding-time point in the third to win 2-1 by decision.

165 | No. 8 Carson Kharchla (OSU) vs. No. 9 Jake Wentzel (PITT)
Kharchla scored the first takedown to lead 2-1 heading into the second. Wentzel tied it at 2-all with an escape to start the second. Kharchla broke the tie with a takedown in the third and after a Wentzel escape it was 4-3 Buckeyes for the win by decision.

174 | No. 6 Ethan Smith (OSU) vs. Hunter Kernan (PITT)
Smith led 12-4 after the first period after a series of takedowns a two-point near fall. He continued to attack in the second and after earning a four-point near fall, won by technical fall, 26-8

184 | No. 10 Kaleb Romero (OSU) vs. No. 31 Gregg Harvey (PITT)
Romero led 3-0 after the first period with a takedown and an awarded stalling point. The lead grew to 6-2 for Romero after two periods. The bout ended with a major decision win for Romero, 10-2

197 | No. 21 Gavin Hoffman (OSU) vs. No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi (PITT)
Bonaccorsi led 2-1 after the first period 7-2 after five minutes of action. The bout ended in favor of No. 2 Bonaccorsi in a win by decision, 10-4.

285 | No. 13 Tate Orndorff (OSU) vs. No. 31 Jake Slinger (PITT)
After a first period takedown, Orndorff led 2-0 after the first period. He increased the lead to 5-0 with a second-period escape and takedown. He secured a win by major decision with a takedown in the final seconds to win, 10-2.

· The Buckeyes and Panthers have met 23 times with Ohio State owning the edge in the series 14-9. The Buckeyes have won seven of the last eight meetings.
· Ohio State finished second at the 2021 Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas Dec. 3-4. The Buckeyes have six team titles since 2009 at the CKLVI including three-consecutive (2016, 17, 18). The Buckeyes have placed outside the Top 5 just once in the past decade and own 10 Top 3 finishes. Individually, Kaleb Romero took top honors in the 184-pound bracket in his first competition of the year.
· A contingent of Buckeyes competed in the Storm Open Dec. 5 in Painesville, Ohio, and came away with five individual champions. Brady Koontz (125), Will Betancourt (133), Jashon Hubbard (157), Fritz Schierl (174) and Rocky Jordan (184) all came away with titles in their respective weight classes.
· The last time out in dual competition, Ohio State cruised to a home 51-0 win over Notre Dame College Nov. 23. All 10 Buckeyes contributed bonus points in the win.
· The Buckeyes traveled to No. 10 Virginia Tech and knocked off the Hokies 17-13 Nov. 19. Seven of the 10 bouts were decided by four or fewer points with the final two at 197 (Hoffman) and HWT (Orndorff) going to the Buckeyes by decision, 3-2.
· Ohio State opened the season with a dual vs. No. 14 North Carolina. Ohio State built a 17-0 lead starting with the 165 match and the debut of Carson Kharchla. The No. 8 Buckeyes won the match 23-12.
· According to Intermat Wrestling, Ohio State plays host to Pittsburgh with eight Buckeyes ranked among the Top 25. They are: Malik Heinselman (No. 14/125); Dylan D’Emilio (No. 24/141); Sammy Sasso (No. 2/149); Carson Kharchla (No. 8/165); Ethan Smith (No. 6/174); Kaleb Romero (No. 10/184), Gavin Hoffman (No. 21/197) and Tate Orndorff (No. 13/HWT).

· Several Buckeyes earned titles at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open Nov. 14 in Tiffin, Ohio. Ohio State earned titles in the Open Division at 125 (Malik Heinselman), at 141 (Dylan D’Emilio), at 149 (Sammy Sasso), at 157 (Bryce Hepner), at 165 (Carson Kharchla), at 174 (Ethan Smith), at 197 (Gavin Hoffman) and at 285 (Tate Orndorff). In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, the Buckeyes won at 157 (Paddy Gallagher) and at heavyweight (Mike Misita).
· Sasso finished the 2021 season as the NCAA Runner-up at 149 with a 16-1 overall record and a 9-0 mark in duals. He recorded a 9-1 record vs. ranked opponents and had five pins, one technical fall and one major decision on the year. He is 5-0 this season with a Top 5 win vs. No. 5 Zach Sherman of North Carolina.
· At the Michigan State Open Nov. 6 in East Lansing freshman Andre Gonzales earned the title in the freshman/sophomore division at 133 with a 4-0 record. Classmate Mike Misita finished No. 2 in the heavyweight bracket with a 3-1 record. In all, seven Buckeyes were among the Top six in their respective brackets.
· On Nov. 10, Tom Ryan, head coach of the Buckeyes, signed the top-ranked recruiting class in the country, including the Top 3 overall recruits.
· Broderick Harris was included in the signing class as an honorary member. Broderick, who aspired to wrestle for the Buckeyes and in the Olympics, was a tireless and fierce competitor. He tragically died in a house fire at age 11 in 2014.
