Lane in Semifinals, Two other Cal Poly Wrestlers Alive in Wrestlebacks at Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Senior Tom Lane earned two victories Friday and is Cal Poly's first semifinalist in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in seven years.
In addition, freshmen Jake Ryan and Bernie Truax remain alive in the consolation bracket and will compete in the Round of 12 Saturday.
Seeded fifth at 197, Lane improved to 4-0 on the year with a 12-2 major decision over Dylan Reynolds of Edinboro and a 6-4 decision against fourth-seeded Eric Schultz of Nebraska.
After a first-round bye, Lane scored three takedowns, four stalling points, an escape and riding time for the win over Reynolds. In the quarterfinals, he tallied a takedown with 11 seconds remaining for a 5-4 lead against Schultz and also picked up the riding time point.
"Tom Lane has put the work in and has continually improved since last year's NCAAs," said fourth-year Mustang head coach Jon Sioredas. "He can wrestle at a high level in all three positions. We are now watching the fruits of his labor."
Lane will face top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Kollin Moore of Ohio State in the semifinals Saturday morning. Lane, Cal Poly's first semifinalist at Las Vegas since Devon Lotito in 2012, lost to Moore 13-6 in last year's quarterfinals.
At 141, Ryan won three of four matches and will face Mitch Moore of Virginia Tech in the wrestlebacks.
Ryan earned an 8-7 decision over Alec White of Purdue, scoring a takedown in the final 20 seconds, then fell 7-4 to Chad Red of Nebraska. In the wrestlebacks, Ryan earned a 3-2 decision over Navonte Demison of Arizona State by way of an escape with 1:49 left, then defeated Brody Lamb of Northern Colorado in a 10-3 decision with four takedowns, an escape and riding time.
Truax lost his first match to Ethan Smith of Ohio State, 9-5. Tied at 4-4 midway through the second period, Truax gave up two escapes, a takedown and riding time.
In the wrestlebacks, Truax won by major decisions against Chase Straw of Iowa State 17-5 and Derek Ciavarro of Edinboro 8-0. Truax compiled four takedowns, a four-point near-fall, a reversal, two escapes and riding time against Straw and three takedowns, an escape and riding time versus Ciavarro.
Truax takes on Bailee O'Reilly of Minnesota on Saturday morning.
"Like Lane, Ryan and Truax also are wrestling lights out," said Sioredas. "They both are in the Round of 12 tomorrow with a lot of momentum."
At 157, Brawley Lamer split four matches, earning a 7-2 decision over Tyler Cunningham of Nebraska-Kearney and a fall in 1 minute, 22 seconds, against Doug Gudenburr of The Citadel. Lamer scored a reversal to tie the match at 2-2 before pinning Gudenburr.
Both Benny Martinez at 125 and Joshy Cortez at 149 won one of three matches while Junior Fernandez (133), Trent Tracy (184) and Samuel Aguilar (285) went 0-2. Nathan Tausch (174) was held out of competition this weekend due to a rib injury.
Cal Poly is 16th among 32 teams in the 38th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, scoring 21.5 points so far. Nebraska leads with 69 points, followed by Ohio State (68) and Arizona State (60.5).
The two-day tournament is being held in the Las Vegas Convention Center's Hall N4.
