Perry Finishes Second at US Open, Three Others Qualify for Olympic Team Trials


LAS VEGAS – Former Oklahoma State wrestling standout and two-time NCAA champion Chris Perry qualified for the Olympic Team Trials, advancing to the US Open finals at 74 kilograms, where he was edged out by NCAA champion Andrew Howe, 3-2.


Perry had a solid showing, picking up three quality wins to earn himself a spot in the finals, where he renewed a rivalry with former OU wrestler Howe. Perry struck first with a takedown in the first period, but takedown attempts by Howe saw him earn a push-out point and a takedown to lead the former Cowboy, 3-2. Perry responded with several attacks but was not successful, falling by one point.


Perry is joined by three other former Cowboys, who produced top-seven finishes and qualified for the Olympic Team Trials in April.


2012 Olympic Bronze medalist Coleman Scott, who previously wrestled at 60 kg and 66 kg on the freestyle circuit, made the cut to 57 kg (125 pounds) for the first time since 2008. The Olympian opened his tournament with two technical falls before getting knocked off by eventual US Open champion Dan Dennis, 3-2. Scott fought his way back, taking out 2015 NCAA champion Nathan Tomasello, 10-0, to advance to the third-place bout. There, he met up with Erkin Tadzhimetov, who he defeated 7-3 to finish third at his first freestyle competition at 57 kilograms.


Both Pokes who competed at 86 kilos qualified for the trials in April in Clayton Foster and Tyler Caldwell.


Cowboy All-American Foster made it to the quarterfinals before getting edged, 4-3, by Richard Perry. On the backside of the bracket, Foster earned quality wins over Zahid Valencia and Ed Ruth, respectively. Foster dropped a 5-0 match to Jon Reader and was sent to the fifth-place bout, where he suffered another loss to Perry, 5-0, to take sixth.


Caldwell moved up to 86 kilograms, where he saw some success. The two-time NCAA finalist fell in the round of 16, but battled back, winning three matches in the consolation to finish seventh.


Four other former Cowboys competed at the event.


Jon Morrison, an All-American for OSU, and Obe Blanc each went 2-2 at the tournament, competing at 57 kilos. OSU club coach and former Cornell All-American Frank Perrelli also competed at 57 kg.


Representing the Cowboys at 65 kilos was 2014 NCAA finalist Josh Kindig. He drew a tough opening bout, taking on former World team member Jimmy Kennedy. Kindig fell to Kennedy by a tech fall and later suffered a 2-2 loss on criteria to Brandon Wright.


At 97 kg, Cayle Byers, who finished third at NCAAs in 2012, was the No. 2 seed. Byers won his first match over Braden Atwood, 7-4, but lost a 6-1 match to 2015 NCAA champ Kyven Gadson. In the consolation bracket, Byers was stuck by Dustin Kilgore in 56 seconds.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three for three. Logan Stieber, Nathan Tomasello and Reece Humphrey all wrestled in the U.S. Senior Nationals/Olympic Trials Qualifier with on Saturday one goal in mind – punch their ticket for a trip to Iowa City, Iowa for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. All three did so by finishing in the top seven of their respective weight classes and will officially continue on their Road to Rio later in 2016.


Stieber was second at 65kg, Humphrey finished third (65kg) while Tomasello was fifth at 57kg. The trio combined for seven tech falls in the 13 matches that they won.


Seeded second, Stieber’s run to the finals was a dominant one, as he won his four matches by an aggregate score of 47-10. He picked up a first round tech fall over Brandon Wright, 12-1, that lasted just 2:04. Stieber’s second round match pitted him against Jayson Ness, a former NCAA champion and Dan Hodge Trophy winner at Minnesota. Ness led early in the first period, 4-2, but from there Stieber ripped off 10 straight points and never looked back.


Another technical fall, this one over former Illinois wrestler Bernard Futrell that took 4:03, pushed Stieber into the semifinals where he squared off with third-seeded Aaron Pico. Stieber led 6-0 at the end of the first period, scoring nine seconds into the match and then twice in the final minute. She scored again 50 seconds into the second period and controlled action the rest of the way for a 13-5 decision.


In the finals, Stieber faced top-seeded Jimmy Kennedy, a three-time All-American at Illinois and the 2014 U.S. Open champion. Stieber struck first with a takedown for a 2-0 lead, but Kennedy countered with a TD of his own and then scored seven points in the second period to make the final score 9-2.


Stieber, who debuted in the most recently world rankings at No. 14, most recently took silver at the United World Wrestling Golden Grand Prix on Nov. 27 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Along the way, he won an entertaining 17-13 decision over 2014 World champion Soslan Ramonov of Russia. In early November, he was second at the Bill Farrell/New York AC International.


Humphrey, a NCAA runner-up for the Buckeyes in 2009 and the U.S. World Team Trials champion at 61kg this past summer, received an opening round bye and then got his day started with a 10-0 tech fall over Joseph Hulen that lasted just 15 seconds. A 7-2 decision over Frank Molinaro followed before Humphrey lost a 9-0 semifinal decision to second-seeded Jimmy Kennedy.


In the consolation bracket, the fifth-seeded Humphrey rebounded to dominate sixth-seeded Kellen Russell, 10-0 on a tech fall that last just 35 seconds. That consolation semifinal win put his in the consolation finals against Pico. There, he dominated Pico, rolling to a 10-0 tech fall (1:48) and securing third place.


Tomasello, seeded seventh, won his first two matches with ease, rolling to a pair of 10-0 tech falls. His first round victory over Rene Ruiz lasted just 23 seconds. In the quarterfinals, Tomasello was pinned by second-seeded Joe Colon with just 38 seconds remaining in the match (5:22). At the time, he was training by just one point, 8-7.


Unfazed, Tomasello came back to win two critical consolation round matches – the first a tight 4-2 decision over Steven Micic and then a 2-1 victory against sixth-seeded Ali Naster. Tomasello scored his two points with first period, Naser scored once in the second and neither wrestler got on the board in the third. That win put him into the consolation semifinals against fourth-seeded Coleman Scott, a bronze medalist in the 2012 Olympics at 60kg and the current head coach at North Carolina. Scott defeated Tomasello, 10-0, but he punched his ticket to the Olympic Trials via an injury default win over Joe Colon in the fifth place match.


The US Olympic Team Trials takes place April 9-10 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. Two Buckeyes – one current and one former – have already qualified: Kyle Snyder (96kg) and JD Bergman (96kg). Bergman won the title this past November at the Bill Farrell/New York AC International while Snyder’s explosion onto the freestyle scene has been well-documented – in the last six months, he has won the US Open, Pan Am Games, World Team Trials and became the youngest American to earn gold at the World Championships.

William Penn Colonials take 2015 Howdy Duncan Wrestling Classic

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-William Penn High School-New Castle, DE-On December 18 and 19, 2015, 21 High Schools from the state of Delaware along with Malvern Prep from PA and John Carroll High School from Belair, MD all competed at the 2 day Howdy Duncan Wrestling Classic that was held at William Penn High School where the hometown Colonials took home the Howdy Duncan Wrestling Classic title and finished in first place with 257.5 points Ryan Robertson Juarez at 132 Alex Haber at 138 were the champions.

The second place Polytech winners were Avery Mayan at 170 and Justin Land at 195. Delaware Military Academy finished in 3rd place where they crowned 2 champions in Shawn Cawman at 113, The Silver Eagles finished in 4th place in team standings and their champion was Tyler Harris at 126. The Force of Charter finished in 5th place and their only champion went to 152 Khadeir Hamilton at 152 pounds. Appoquinimink finished in 7th place and their only champion was Danny Blaasch at 160. Archmere finished in 10th place and their only champion went to Matt McCurnin of Archmere at 120. The Friars of Malvern finished in 14th place their 2 champions were Malvern champions were Henry Hauge at 106 and Nick Florschutz at 182. John Carroll our of BelAir, MD had 1 champion at 145 in Isaac Meyers No Team Scoring. The Raiders of Concord finished in 6th place as their only champion went to Andrew Galewski at 285. The Yellowjackets of Newark finished in 15th place as Nazir Robertson won at 220
