LSU Baseball Report

For Immediate Release – May 14, 2016

NO. 11 LSU POSTS 11-3 WIN OVER TENNESSEE

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Junior left-hander Jared Poche’ limited Tennessee on Saturday to two runs in 5.1 innings, and junior catcher Jordan Romero collected three hits and two RBI to lead 11th-ranked LSU to an 11-3 win over the Volunteers at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

LSU, which has won seven straight games and five consecutive SEC contests, improved to 35-16 overall and 16-10 in conference play. Tennessee dropped to 26-25 overall and 7-19 in the SEC.

The teams conclude the series Sunday at 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. CT) in a game that may be viewed online on SEC Network +, accessible at WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app. The game can be heard on affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network, with live audio and live stats available at www.LSUsports.net.

Freshman right-hander Caleb Gilbert (4-2) will start on the mound for the Tigers, and Tennessee will counter with sophomore left-hander Aaron Soto (4-2).

Poche’ (6-4) worked 5.1 innings on Saturday, firing 90 pitches and limiting the Vols to two runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Right-hander Russell Reynolds earned his first career save, as he worked the final 3.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits with no walks and one strikeout.

LSU erupted for six runs on six hits in the first inning against Tennessee starter Zach Warren. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double from leftfielder Beau Jordan and RBI singles by shortstop Kramer Robertson, catcher Jordan Romero, third baseman Chris Reid and first baseman Greg Deichmann.

“We have a very good offensive team that takes an excellent approach at the plate, and that was certainly evident today,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “That first inning outburst was huge for us and set the tone for the game. Jared gave us a solid outing and worked into the sixth inning, which is exactly what we needed. Russell Reynolds continues to very effective out of the bullpen, so our pitching is set up nicely for the final game of the series.

“We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now, which is critical at this time of the season.”

Warren (5-5) was charged with the loss, as he recorded just one out in the top of the first inning and issued two walks.

LSU extended its lead to 7-0 in the second inning when Romero unloaded a solo homer, his ninth dinger of the year.

Romero was 3-for-4 on the day with two RBI and two runs scored to lead LSU’s 13-hit output.

The Tigers added two runs in the third as rightfielder Antoine Duplantis scored when Tennessee centerfielder Brodie Leftridge misplayed LSU centerfielder Jake Fraley’s single, and Fraley later came home from third on a double steal.

Tennessee narrowed the deficit to 9-1 in the bottom of third when Leftridge doubled and later scored on third baseman Nick Senzel’s groundout.

Fraley lifted a sacrifice fly in the fifth to score second baseman Cole Freeman, giving the Tigers a 10-1 advantage.

Tennessee scored a run in the sixth on a Poche’ wild pitch, but LSU answered with a run in the top of the seventh when Deichmann scored from second base on a throwing error by first baseman Derek Lance.

The Vols added a run in the eighth on Lance’s sacrifice fly to account for the final margin.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—On one of the most important days of the season the Rider Broncs had one of their worst days of the season.

The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader to Marist Saturday.

“I have nothing positive to say about today,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “It got to the point today where it was almost embarrassing.”

In the first game sophomore Nick Margevicius (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) pitched into the seventh inning and allowed just one run and one walk while striking out four. “Nick threw well,” Davis said. “He was one of the few people who had a good day today.”

Rider (16-31, 8-12 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a home run by freshman Riley Mihalik (Churchville, PA/Chestnut Hill), his third of the season. Mihalik also doubled in the first game and had four hits on the day, including two doubles. “Mihalik had a good day today,’ Davis said. “That’s about it.”

Freshman Brennan McAllister (Middletown, DE/Middletown) hit a pinch-hit home run, his first, in the ninth inning for the final score of game one.

Marist (23-22, 12-8 MAAC) tied the score at 1-1 in the seventh inning on a home run, and scored two in the eighth on a double, a walk, a fielder’s choice and an error for a 3-1 lead. The Red Foxes added three runs in the ninth on two hits, a walk and an RBI ground out.

In the second game Marist scored four runs in the second inning on two walks, three hits and a squeeze bunt to take a 4-1 lead. The Red Foxes put up a five spot in the fifth on five hits, including two doubles and a home run, to put the game away.

Rider senior James Locklear (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) had three hits on the day and now has 177 career hits, 27th most ever at Rider.

The third game of the series is Sunday at 12 noon.

The final series of the regular season is May 19-20 when Rider hosts Saint Peter’s. “We have four MAAC games left and if we win all four we have a chance to make the playoffs,” Davis said. “We are barely holding on but there is still a chance. That is what we will be playing for.”

Wade Named to Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List
Delaware native has played in 15 career games for BC

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College quarterback Darius Wade was
named to the 2017 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List today. The
watch list boasts 47 standout quarterbacks from different divisions
and conferences across the nation. The Golden Arm Award is presented
at the end of each football season and the winner is selected based on
his accomplishments both on and off the field. Candidates must be a
college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with
their class.

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm
Award and The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, and we
are proud to honor this new class of candidates. After three decades
of honoring these quarterbacks’ achievements, the Golden Arm Award is
the only college football award that has 10 previous recipients still
competing in the NFL.

The Golden Arm Award committee will announce the Top 15 finalists for
the 2017 Golden Arm Award in September. The 30th anniversary
presentation of the Golden Arm Award will be held on Fri., Dec. 8 at
the Embassy Suites Baltimore Inner Harbor & Grand.

Wade, who graduated from Boston College in May, has two years of
eligibility remaining with the Eagles. The Delaware native has
appeared in 15 career games at Boston College, including nine a
reserve role last season. In his career, Wade is 33-of-69 passing for
355 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Wade started the first three games
of the 2015 season before missing the rest of the year due to a leg
injury.

“The Golden Arm Award values character, citizenship, integrity,
leadership, and sportsmanship – characteristics that were displayed by
my father. These attributes were every bit as important as the
quarterback’s completion rate or number of touchdowns scored,” says
John C. Unitas, Jr., President of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm
Educational Foundation, Inc. “Despite his many accolades, my Dad never
forgot his humble beginnings and that won him a permanent place in the
hearts of everyone who ever knew him.”

The namesake of the Golden Arm Award has a storied history. Johnny
Unitas was an 18-year veteran of the NFL, who played his collegiate
career at the University of Louisville before joining the Baltimore
Colts in 1958. His career passing figures include 2,830 pass
completions for 40,239 yards, 290 touchdowns and throwing a touchdown
pass in 47 consecutive games.

Proceeds from the event help support the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm
Educational Foundation, Inc. The Foundation provides financial
assistance to underprivileged and deserving young scholar-athletes
throughout Maryland and Kentucky.

Former Boston College standout Matt Ryan won the Johnny Unitas Golden
Arm Award in 2007.

It was Lerro's third-straight game with a goal, a feat that helped her earn an honorable mention from the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Player of the Week committee earlier in the day.

Boston College (6-5) vs. UConn (3-8)

Fenway Park | Boston, Mass.

Nov. 18, 2017

Team

For the fourth time in five seasons, Boston College became bowl-eligible with a 39-16 victory over UConn Saturday evening at Fenway Park.

Head coach Steve Addazio will be the first coach in Boston College history to lead the Eagles to four bowl games in the first five years as head coach.

Boston College played its 77th game in school history Saturday evening at Fenway Park. The Eagles are 55-17-5 all-time at America’s oldest ballpark.

UConn was the home team for the game as the Huskies decided to move the contest from its home field in East Hartford, Conn. to Fenway Park. It was BC’s first game at Fenway Park since a 19-16 loss to No. 4 Notre Dame on Nov. 21, 2015.

Boston College is 12-0-2 all-time against UConn. In the last 11 meetings, BC has won all 11 games and outscored the Huskies 336-75.

BC has outscored UConn, 102-19, over the last two meetings. Last year, BC won 30-0 at Alumni Stadium against the Huskies.

The Eagles’ 330 rushing yards racked up against the Huskies are the second most logged in 2017. They recorded 364 in the 45-42 victory at Louisville on Oct. 14. BC is 11-0 all-time under Addazio when rushing for 300+ yards in a game.

Boston College has outscored the opposition 91-34 in the third quarter this season.

Offense

True freshman running back AJ Dillon finished with his second career 200-yard game as the Connecticut native rushed for 200 yards on 34 carries and two touchdowns.

Dillon had two 50+ yard runs in the first half and totaled 140 yards and a touchdown at halftime.

Dillon is 10th in Boston College single-season history with 1,239 rushing yards. Dillon is fourth among ACC freshmen all-time in single-season rushing as well.

Darius Wade earned the start at quarterback for Boston College, his first start of the season and fourth of his career. It was his first start since Sept. 18, 2015 against No. 9 Florida State.

Wade tossed his first touchdown pass of the season to sophomore tight end Chris Garrison for BC’s first touchdown of the game. It was the first touchdown reception of Garrison’s career.

Redshirt junior running back Jon Hilliman scored on a 38-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for his 25th career rushing touchdown. He added another score in the fourth quarter to move into sole possession in school history with 26 career rushing scores.

Hilliman recorded 107 rushing yards on 10 carries for his seventh career 100-yard game.

The last time BC teammates logged over 100 rushing yards in the same game was on Dec. 27, 2014 when Hilliman (148) and Tyler Murphy (105) did so against Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.

Defense

Sophomore cornerback Hamp Cheevers made his first career start in his 16th career game. Cheevers replaced senior captain Kamrin Moore in the starting lineup, who is out for the season with a shoulder injury. Cheevers recorded his second career interception in the first quarter.

Junior defensive end Wyatt Ray blocked his first career field goal in the first quarter. Ray, who made his third consecutive start at defensive end, finished the game with five tackles and one for a loss.

Complete Recap

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Dec. 9) – Coy Patterson Jr. matched a career high with 18 points to lead the Saint Vincent men's basketball team to a 62-56 road victory over Geneva College in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

Saint Vincent started with baskets by Shemar Bennett and Kyle Evans to take an early 4-0 lead. After Geneva answered with a three-pointer, Patterson converted on a layup to make it 6-3 Bearcats at the 15:05 mark.

Holding an 8-5 SVC advantage, the host Golden Tornadoes used a 9-2 run to surge into the lead at 14-10. A little later, Matt D'Amico drained a three-pointer to bring SVC within one point at 16-15 with 9:19 left in the first half.

Geneva would use an 8-2 run over the next four plus minutes to build a 24-17 lead over SVC. However, in a slow-paced, low scoring first half, Saint Vincent closed the half on a 10-4 run to bring the deficit to just one point at 28-27. Patterson contributed six of the 10 Bearcat points during the late half run.

The Bearcats opened the second half with a 10-5 run to take a 37-33 advantage over the Golden Tornadoes with 16:59 to play. SVC started the half with a layup from Austin Dedert and two free throws by D'Amico to take the lead.

After SVC extended the lead to 39-34 with 13:49 to play, Geneva used an 8-0 run over the next two plus minutes to take a 42-39 advantage at the 11:33 mark.

A pair of free throws by Jason Capco and a layup by D'Amico helped SVC regain the lead at 47-43. A quick spurt, capped by an offensive rebound and putback helped Geneva tie the game at 49-49 with 4:56 remaining.

Josh Duda connected on a three-pointer, his first basket of the game, to give SVC a 52-49 advantage with 4:41 to play. Geneva once again used a second chance offensive opportunity to tie the game, gaining an offensive rebound and draining a three-pointer.

Capco would give SVC a 55-52 lead with 3:29 to play after hitting on three-of-four free throws at the charity stripe. After a layup helped Geneva cut the deficit to 55-54 with 3:14 to play, Saint Vincent took control with a 7-2 run to close the game.

Saint Vincent didn't shoot the ball well from the field, converting just 31.6 percent. However, the Bearcats connected on 24-of-30 free throw attempts. SVC out-rebounded Geneva by a 43-39 margin, which included 20 offensive rebounds.

D'Amico joined Patterson in double figures with 11 points. Evans tallied seven points and a team-best nine rebounds. Tom Kromka filled the stat sheet with five points, six rebounds and five blocks.

SVC improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in PAC play. Geneva drops to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in league action.

Bluejay Women's Basketball Gift Coach Flanery a Late Gift, His 300th Win, 69-54 Over #18 Villanova

Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton women's basketball squad delivered a late Christmas gift to head coach Jim Flanery, wrapping up his 300th win against #18 Villanova by a 69-54 score.

The win lifted Creighton to 7-4 on the season and 1-0 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova suffered its first loss of the season to fall to 10-1 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

Villanova opened the game strong as the Wildcats raced out to a 6-2 edge, then pushed their lead out to 16-9 with 1:39 remaining in the opening frame. Sophomore Jaylyn Agnew stepped up to get the Bluejays going with a three-ball from the right wing, but Villanova's Mary Gedaka dropped in a driving layup to send the contest to the second period with Villanova up 18-12.

The Bluejays pulled within a bucket (18-16) early in the second behind a driving layup from freshman Temi Carda and two free throws from junior Audrey Faber, but Creighton was unable to grab the lead. Villanova took advantage by finding their range from beyond the arc, hitting a trio of three-pointers to push its edge to 29-20 (3:39).

With the game on the line, the Bluejays responded with 12 of the final 16 points. Senior Myah Mellman got Creighton started on the comeback trail with a driving layup, then followed with two free throws to make it 29-24. Moments later Agnew dropped in another trey, then following a Wildcat bucket Faber connected from downtown to make it 31-30 (0:58). The two squads traded buckets before the end of the half as Villanova clung to a 33-32 lead at the break.

Down 36-34 with just under seven minutes left in the third, Creighton seized its first lead since the opening period behind a jumper from Faber and a traditional three-point play by senior Sydney Lamberty. Lamberty scored after grabbing an offensive rebound. On the play Villanova's Adrianna Hahn picked up her fourth foul, forcing her to the bench. Although Villanova remained close by trading buckets for a few moments, the Bluejays pushed a 41-40 edge out to 48-40 (3:48) on five straight from Faber and a driving layup from senior Bailey Norby. The Bluejays closed the frame up 49-43 as Villanova's Jannah Tucker drilled a step-back three.

Agnew answer on the opening possession of the fourth, knocking down a trey. Moments later Faber pushed Creighton's lead into double-figures with two free throws to make it 54-43 (7:57). Leading 58-50 (5:12) the Bluejays put the game away with a 6-0 run on buckets from Carda, sophomore Olivia Elger and Faber to extend their advantage to 64-50 (2:36).

Faber and Agnew led the Bluejays with 19 points each, while Villanova got 11 points from Tucker and Megan Quinn as well as 10 from Hahn.

Creighton's win was the Bluejays' first victory over a ranked opponent since downing #22 St. John's on Feb. 23, 2014 (65-62).

The Bluejays return to the floor on Sunday, Dec. 30 as Creighton hosts Georgetown at 1:00 pm.
