Esther Erb

While living in New Jersey, Esther Erb enjoyed an incredible amount of success as a coach and athlete. While assisting head coach Bob Hamer at Rider University in both cross country and track, Erb's marathon career really soared. In 2013, she finished third at the US Marathon Championships, and in 2014, she won the US Marathon title. This qualified her for the 2015 World Championships, where she finished 24th in Beijing. Doing much of her training around the Princeton area, she also hopped in many local road and track races, too. Recently married to Cole Atkins, she continues to prepare for the 2016 Olympic Trials in Los Angeles this February as a member of the Sketchers Elite and NYAC.

Emily Ritter

Emily has put Rider University, and thus New Jersey, on the distance running map the past few years. A good, but not great, runner in high school, she came to Coach Bob Hamer with hopes to improve in college, and her 4:50 mile sophomore year was a big step. However, things really took off her junior year when she tried out the 3,000 meter steeplechase, as she actually broke the school record in her first steeplechase race! Despite a disappointing NCAA regional race later that year, she bounced back senior year and finished 9th at the NCAA's with a 9:54 performance. This qualified her to run at the USATF National Championships, also in Eugene, weeks later. That all said, things seem to be going really well during her final victory lap year at Rider. Named MAAC Athlete of the Week two weeks in a row this fall, she recently ran a 6k personal best of 20:58 during a wet and sloppy Paul Short Invite out at Lehigh.

Play 4 The Cure
Rider Hosts Fairfield 7pm

LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University field hockey team returns home for the first time in almost a month when the Broncs host Fairfield University on Friday night at 7pm at Ben Cohen Field in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game.

Rider (8-4) has been led by sophomore Allison Baligian who has nine goals and junior Carlie Spaeder who has seven goals and five assists.

Spaeder was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after recording a hat trick and adding an assist at Villanova this past Sunday.

Between the pipes, the Broncs are led by senior goalie Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) who has seven wins and a 1.76 goals against average in 12 games this season.

Rider is unbeaten on Ben Cohen Field this season at 3-0.

Fairfield (4-6, 0-1 MAAC) opened conference play with a 2-1 loss at Monmouth University on October 10. The Stags are in their first season in the MAAC for field hockey after coming into the league from the America East. The Stags were former conference partners with Rider in the Northeast Conference through 2006.

Fairfield is led by junior forward Ann Burgoyne who has seven goals in 10 games and junior goalie Caitlin Bennett who has three wins and a 2.77 goals against average.

The Stags have wins over Colgate, Drexel, Providence and Villanova.

Tonight is the 19th meeting all-time with Rider holding a 14-4 series lead. The teams last met in 2007 when the Broncs won 2-0. Rider won 3-2 at Fairfield in 2006 in a Northeast Conference game and the Broncs prevailed 3-0 in an NEC game in 2005.

Tonight’s game is Rider’s annual Play 4 The Cure event where the Broncs will collect donations in support of the Susan G. Koman Foundation in the fight against breast cancer.

Both teams will help hold a ceremony for Rider Director of Publications Cathy Carter Romero who passed away in January after a 13-year fight against the disease. Pregame and a balloon release will be at 6:55pm with the game beginning at 7:05pm.

If you can’t make the game, Friday’s event (weather permitting) and every home field hockey game can be seen on BroncVision and MAAC.TV as part of Rider’s pay per view service powered by GoBroncs.com. The game (video only) will be streamed live in high definition.

GameViewer (LiveStats) will also be available, free of charge via the link on GoBroncs.com and live tweets will be sent out which you can follow via twitter @RiderAthletics.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Both the Rider men and women defeated Fairfield in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference meet Friday evening in the Coppola Pool. “This was our first conference meet of the year and our teams were excited about that,” said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher, “and we did well.”

For the Rider men (2-0), who are ranked 20th in the nation among Mid-Majors and 44th overall in Division I, senior Wayco Bailey (Casper, Wyo./Natrona County HS) won the three-meter dive (296.85) and qualified for the NCAA Zone meet in winning the one-meter dive (318.37).

“He’s so good it is kind of expected,” Fletcher said of Bailey again qualifying for Zones. “He’s right on track. We hope he can build on the experiences he has had at previous Zone meets.”

Sophomore Zack Molloy (Toms River/Toms River HS North) won the 100 back (52.13) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay. Junior William Molloy (Toms River/Toms River HS North) won the 200 free (1:45.35) and the 100 free (47.20). Junior Ariana Palmer (Burlington, NJ) won the 50 free (25.33) and swam on the winning 200 Medley relay. Freshman Leeanna Cass (Lanoka Harbor, NJ) won the 200 free (2:00.75) and the 200 IM (2:16.67).

“The women were more comfortable this week,” Fletcher said. “They raced well. We had lots of improvement over last week in terms of both strategy and overall times.”

Freshman Olivia Cann (Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) won the one-meter dive, sophomore Tara Maniace (Neptune, NJ) won the 100 breast (1:09.48) and sophomore Julianna Runk (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall) won the 200 breast (2:33.97).

Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Game

WEST LONG BRANCH—Despite two goals from sophomore Allison Baligian (Flemington/Hunterdon Central), the Rider University field hockey team gave up three, one-goal leads in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference loss at Monmouth University on Sunday afternoon at So Sweet A Cat Field.

“We played a great game offensively,” said head coach Lori Hussong. “Once again, defensively, we did not hold up as we gave the lead away three times.”

Monmouth broke a 3-3 tie with 2:05 left, beating sophomore goalie Hannah Isaacs (Piscataway) to the near side left post.

Baligian gave Rider a 3-2 lead, taking a cross from junior Carlie Spaeder (Newtown Square, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) on a penalty corner with 11:03 remaining in the game.

For Baligian, it was her team-leading 12th goal of the season and the third game in a row that she has found the back of the cage.

Monmouth tied the game 3-3 on a far post deflection just three minutes later.

Freshman Jessica Randazzo (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) scored her fourth goal of the season, 2:08 into the second half to give the Broncs a 2-1 lead before Monmouth tied the game on a rebound in the 48th minute.

Randazzo has two goals and three assists in her last three games.

Baligian scored in the 14th minute, deflecting a shot from Randazzo, giving Rider a 1-0 lead before Monmouth scored on a far post deflection with 2:06 left in the opening half and the teams went into intermission tied 1-1.

Baligian has four goals in her last three games.

Rider held a 17-13 shot advantage and a 10-7 advantage on penalty corners.

Isaacs made three saves for Rider. Christen Piersanti made six saves for the Hawks.

Rider defeated Monmouth 1-0 during the 2014 regular season before the Hawks avenged that defeat in the MAAC Championship game, the fourth time in five seasons that the teams met for a conference title. Rider defeated the Hawks for the Northeast Conference championship in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Monmouth won for the ninth time in the 36-game series (3 ties). Rider had won eight in a row in the series with the Hawks winning the last two straight.

Rider hosts Quinnipiac University on October 23 in a MAAC game at 4:30pm on Ben Cohen Field.

Men’s Basketball Picked Seventh In Patriot League Preseason Poll

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Loyola University Maryland men’s basketball was picked to finish seventh in a poll of Patriot League coaches and sports information personnel, the conference announced Thursday at its annual media day at ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks.

The Greyhounds received 73 votes in a tightly bunched poll that saw Lehigh University draw 12 first-place votes and top honors entering the 2015-2016 season. The Mountain Hawks were followed by Bucknell University, Boston University, the U.S. Military Academy, American University and defending Patriot League champion Lafayette College.

Loyola pulled in 23 more points than eighth-place College of the Holy Cross, and the final two spots were taken by Colgate University and the U.S. Naval Academy.

The Greyhounds, who finished last year with a 7-11 Patriot League record and 11-19 overall mark, return 90 percent of their scoring from a season ago. Graduated guard Denzel Brito is the only player who saw significant playing time in 2014-2015 to no longer be with the program.

Eric Laster leads three players who averaged 10.2 points per game last year and is Loyola’s top returning scorer (10.9 points per game). Tyler Hubbard was just behind Laster in scoring (10.8), while Andre Walker (10.2) also topped double figures in scoring average.

The return of Jarred Jones will bolster the Greyhounds’ frontcourt, as well. Jones, who averaged 8.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in 2013-2014, missed all by the first two games of last year with injuries.

Franz Rassman, a senior who posted marks of 8.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last season, will join Jones in the post.

Cam Gregory, who averaged 7.0 rebounds, third-most in the Patriot League, as a freshman in 2014-2015, and Chancellor Barnard will provide a deep frontline for Loyola. Barnard led the team in blocked shots (26) a year ago. Gregory and Walker both earned Patriot League All-Rookie Team honors in their first seasons at Loyola.

The Greyhounds open the 2015-2016 campaign with an exhibition game against McGill University, a top Canadian team from Montreal, on Thursday, Nov. 5. Just over a week later, Loyola hosts Tennessee State University on the season’s opening night in a 7 o’clock tipoff on Friday, Nov. 13.

EDISON, NJ - Senior A.J. English headlined three Iona College men's basketball selections on the 2015-16 Preseason All-MAAC Team as a unanimous pick for the league's Preseason Player of the Year. The two-time defending regular season champions were also two points shy of a unanimous selection to finish first again in the upcoming season.

English was joined by reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year Schadrac Casimir on the first team and senior Isaiah Williams on the second team.

English - also a unanimous selection to the preseason first team - ranked No. 2 in the MAAC in scoring as a junior, averaging 20.1 points per game. He was tied for the league's top playmaker, averaging 5.1 assists per game. An All-MAAC First Team selection as a sophomore and junior, English led the conference with 106 made three-pointers and three-point field goals per game in 2014-15.

English is the fourth Iona performer in six seasons under head coach Tim Cluess to earn MAAC Preseason Player of the Year honors joining Mike Glover (2011-12), Lamont Jones (2012-13) and David Laury (2014-15).

Casimir, joins English on the first team and was the unanimous 2015 MAAC Rookie of the Year and All-MAAC Second Team performer. He ranked No. 6 in the MAAC with 14.5 points per game and was the conference leader with an 89.5% free-throw conversion rate. Casimir ranked second in both three-point field goals made and three-point percentage. He was also named CollegeInsider.com Freshman All-America for the Gaels. Casimir is the first sophomore since Fairfield’s Derek Needham in 2010 to make the preseason All-MAAC First Team. Iona's duo of English and Casimir on the first team together marks the fourth time in six seasons under Cluess Iona has had two representatives (Laury, English - 2014-15; Laury, Sean Armand - 2013-14; Glover, Scott Machado - 2011-12). Cluess has had at least one first team performer each year.

A preseason All-MAAC Second Team selection, Williams was left off the 2015 postseason All-MAAC team due in part to missing 12 league games in January and February following a foot injury. He was fourth in scoring (13.3 ppg), second in rebounding (6.1 rpg), and his 69 three-pointers were third behind English and Casimir.

In the team poll, the Gaels earned 10 first place votes and 119 overall, two shy of a perfect 121. Monmouth was second (105 points) while Manhattan and Rider tied for third at 91. The 2015 tournament winning Jaspers garnered the remaining first place vote. Siena, Canisius, Quinnipiac, Fairfield, Saint Peter's, Marist and Niagara rounded out the poll.

Iona has picked to finish first in the league for the third time with Cluess at the helm and held true to form in each of the seasons. The Gaels are 34-6 in MAAC regular season play since the start of the 2013-14 campaign and 73-21 in five seasons under Cluess. At the Hynes Center, the Gaels are 41-4 against MAAC opponents and have won 15 straight since falling by two points to Canisius on Jan. 19, 2014. Iona's 19-game home winning streak overall is currently the 11th longest in NCAA Division I.

The Gaels open the 2015-16 on the road at defending Horizon League champion Valparaiso on Nov. 15 before traveling to the Pac-12's Oregon State two days later and opening its Hynes Center schedule on Nov. 20 vs. Delaware.

College Field Hockey – Code Cranberry
Rider Home Friday

LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University field hockey team returns to action on Friday when the Broncs host Quinnipiac University on Ben Cohen Field.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game begins at 4:30pm.

Rider (9-5, 1-1 MAAC) has been led by 12 goals and 25 points from sophomore Allison Baligian who has a team-high four game-winning goals this season.

The Broncs have also been sparked by a youth movement as freshman Jessica Randazzo has four goals and four assists (12 points) on the season and she was named both the MAAC Rookie of the Week and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Rookie of the Week for all games October 12-18.

Randazzo had six points for the past week, as the Broncs went 1-1. Against Fairfield, she scored the game-winning goal, snapping a 4-4 tie with 2:58 left in regulation. Randazzo also assisted on the first goal of the game that gave the Broncs a 1-0 lead. At Monmouth, Randazzo again assisted on the opening goal of the game and her tally two minutes into the second half gave Rider a 2-1 lead.

Also coming up aces for the Bronc offense has been junior Carlie Spaeder who has nine goals and six assists (24 points) this season.

Senior Joelle Prettyman is expected to make the start at goalie for the Broncs. Prettyman enters play with seven wins and a 1.98 goals against average.

Friday’s game will also be Code Cranberry on Ben Cohen Field.

Code Cranberry is an initiative designed to express a unified show of support among varsity athletes at Rider University.

There is a slogan among Rider athletes, that there are 380 athletes, 20 sports but 1 team. Rider SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Council), SAM (Student-Athlete Mentors) and members of the Captains' Leadership Seminar took that slogan and expanded it to create Code Cranberry.

On designated Code Cranberry dates, all varsity student-athletes are asked to come out to the contest, wearing their Code Cranberry tee shirt, and cheer on their fellow student-athletes in an effort to show that while they compete in different sports, they are all part of one team, and that team is Rider Athletics.

Code Cranberry. When 380 student-athletes from 20 sports come together to support one team. Rider Athletics.

Friday is the second to last regular season home game for the Broncs as Rider will celebrate senior day with a noon start against Sacred Heart on Sunday. Prior to the game, the Broncs will honor the careers of Melyssa Alonso, Rachel Ippolite and Joelle Prettyman.

If you can’t make the game, Friday’s event (weather permitting) and every home field hockey game can be seen on BroncVision and MAAC.TV as part of Rider’s pay per view service powered by GoBroncs.com. The game (video only) will be streamed live in high definition.

“I’m proud of the effort,” head coach Lori Hussong said. “After the loss Friday (3-2 in overtime to Quinnipiac), I think we showed a lot of character and a lot of strength in finding a way to get the job done.”

“We were disappointed in how we played the last two games,” said van Egmond. “We knew we had to play better today and we needed a great start. Everyone worked together as a team.”

On a penalty corner just four minutes into the game, van Egmond took a short pass from sophomore Shannon Hughes (South Plainfield) and converted her first career goal to give the Broncs a 1-0 lead.

Sacred Heart used a penalty corner of its own to tie the score just 1:46 later.

Junior Carlota Alsina (Barcelona, Spain) scored her sixth goal of the season, taking a pass from red-shirt sophomore Melissa Cunningham (Oaklyn/Collingswood) who received the insert on the penalty corner from van Egmond in the eighth minute to give Rider a 2-1 lead.

In the 22nd minute, sophomore Allison Baligian (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) stole a pass at midfield and converted the breakaway for her team-leading 13th goal of the season to give Rider a two-goal lead at intermission.

“Our offense played well,” Hussong said. “And the defense held strong.”

Sacred Heart held a 9-8 shot advantage in the second half but couldn’t solve senior goalie Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) in the final 35 minutes as the Broncs held on for the 3-1 win.

Prettyman made nine saves in the game to pick up career win number 40.

Rider (10-6, 2-2 MAAC) held a 24-19 advantage in shots and the Broncs won the penalty corner battle 11-8.

Mary Altepeter made 15 saves for Sacred Heart (2-13, 0-5 MAAC).

This was the final home game in the careers of Prettyman, Melyssa Alonso (Toms River/Toms River HS North) and Rachel Ippolite (Woolwich Twp./Kingsway Regional) with all three honored prior to the game. This group has amassed 49 wins so far including a 24-6 record on Ben Cohen Field.

“It feels great to pick up a win, especially on senior day,” Prettyman said.

“The seniors played well,” Hussong added.

“We played well as a team, as a whole and not individually,” van Egmond added. “Everyone knew their task and everyone focused on that.”

Rider leads the all-time series over Sacred Heart 20-7.

Sacred Heart defeated Rider in Connecticut 2-1 in 2014, snapping a nine game losing streak to the Broncs.

The Broncs won 4-0 over the Pioneers in 2013 on Ben Cohen Field. Rider and Sacred Heart met in Connecticut in 2012 with the Broncs pulling out a 1-0, double overtime victory.

Rider defeated Sacred Heart 4-0 in 2011 in Lawrenceville. Rider defeated Sacred Heart 2-0 in Connecticut in 2010 and 3-0 on the road in 2009. In 2008, Rider defeated the Pioneers 3-1 in Lawrenceville and 2-0 in the 2008 Northeast Conference semifinals at Lock Haven.

Rider is currently in fourth place in the MAAC with the top four teams advancing to the conference playoffs November 6-8. Rider has qualified for the playoffs in 15 straight seasons.

Rider travels to Bryant University on October 30 for a MAAC game before completing the regular season at conference-rival Siena College on November 1.

“We are focusing on one game at a time and thinking about Bryant,” Hussong said. The MAAC is wide open and any team can be beaten on any given day and we have to come out prepared and ready to play.”

Godwin Added to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List

Sophomore wide out among the candidates for the nation’s top receiver

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Oct. 28, 2015 – Sophomore wide receiver Chris Godwin (Middletown, Del.) has been added to the Biletnikoff Award watch list for the nation’s top receiver. Godwin joins teammate and fellow sophomore DaeSean Hamilton (Fredericksburg, Va.) on the list.

The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the outstanding receiver in college football. Any player, regardless of position (wide receiver, tight end, slot back and running back) who catches a pass is eligible for the award. As such, the Biletnikoff Award recognizes the outstanding receiver, not merely outstanding wide receiver.

Bobby Engram was the inaugural award winner in 1994 and is the only Penn State player to claim the honor.

Godwin leads the Nittany Lions with 34 catches for 628 yards. He also had a pair of touchdown catches on the season. Godwin ranks 27th in FBS in yards per reception (18.47), 30th in receiving yards and 41st yards per game (78.5). He has caught at least four passes in eight of his last nine games, dating back to last season, and has at least one reception in 20 of his 21 collegiate games.

The Middletown, Delaware native is coming off his second-straight 100-yard game with 135 yards on four catches with a touchdown against Maryland. He also had 103 yards on three catches at No. 1 Ohio State. Godwin is the first Nittany Lion with back-to-back 100-yard receiving games since Allen Robinson in 2013 (106 vs. Nebraska; 122 at Wisconsin).

The 2015 Biletnikoff Award winner will be presented live on December 10, 2015, on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show to be broadcast 7-9 p.m. on ESPN. College Football Hall of Famer and Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard will present the 2015 Biletnikoff Award winner on the show.

The Nittany Lions return to Beaver Stadium after a two-game road trip to host Illinois Saturday at noon. The game will air on ESPN2, the Penn State Sports Network (10:30 a.m. pregame) and GoPSUsports.com.

Tickets for the Nittany Lions’ last two home games are available. Penn State hosts Illinois Saturday and Michigan on Nov. 21 for Senior Day and the Penn State WhiteOut. To purchase tickets or for more information, fans can visit PSUnrivaled.com, call 1-800-NITTANY or visit the Bryce Jordan Center ticket office weekdays from 10 a.m-6 p.m.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Nov. 5, 2015 – Junior long snapper Tyler Yazujian (Royersford, Pa.) and redshirt freshman linebacker Troy Reeder (Wilmington, Del.) have been selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District™ team for their performance in the classroom and on the field. LIU Brooklyn Beats Buzzer For 71-68 Win Over Men’s Basketball

BALTIMORE -- Joel Hernandez banked in a running 23-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Long Island University Brooklyn a 71-68 win Monday night over Loyola University Maryland in non-conference action at Reitz Arena.

The Greyhounds (0-2) had possession, coming out of a timeout with five seconds left, as Andre Walker inbounded the ball to Jarred Jones under the Loyola basket. Jones flashed open, but LIU Brooklyn’s Jerome Frink blocked his layup.

Frink grabbed the rebound, passed it to Martin Hermannsson at the free-throw line, and Hermannsson hit Hernandez in stride. Hernandez caught the pass and shot in nearly one motion from the top right of the arc, and his attempt banked off the backboard for the game-winning 3-pointer as time expired.

Loyola had battled all the back from being 13 points down with just over 10 minutes to play in the second half to three times tie the score at the end of regulation.

Walker’s two free throws with 43.3 seconds left knotted the game at 68-68, and the Blackbirds’ possession was thwarted by a Hermannsson turnover with just over 24 seconds left.

Loyola took a timeout after Walker crossed the ball into their halfcourt, but out of the timeout, LIU Brooklyn (1-0) knocked the ball over the end line, setting up the final play.

The Blackbirds led by two at halftime, 31-29, but they stretched their advantage to double-digits just over seven minutes in to the second half. A Frink fast-break layup gave LIU Brooklyn a 50-39 advantage, and minutes later, Nura Zanna converted on a layup at 10:13 to put the lead to 13, 56-43.

An and-one play by Eric Laster, and a layup by Cam Gregory drew the Greyhounds back within eight, but Hermannsson hit a three, and Iverson Fleming scored on in transition to stretch the difference back to 13, 61-48, with 8:46 left.

Loyola, however, cut its disadvantage back to four in slightly more than three minutes. Laster scored in the paint, Walker hit 1-of-2 free throws, Tyler Hubbard made a three, and James Fives converted 1-of-2 at the line. Fives’ free throw at 5:31 drew Loyola within four, 61-57.

Zanna momentarily broke the 9-0 Loyola run by hitting 1-of-2 himself at 4:05, but Walker penetrated from the top of the perimeter and found Hubbard on the left side. Hubbard hit the three, his third of the game, and Loyola was within a pair, 62-60, at 3:49.

The teams traded pairs of free throws before Hermannsson missed a three, and Frink grabbed the rebound. His layup went off the mark, and Jarred Jones came down with the rebound.

This time, Hubbard misfired on a three, but Jones grabbed the offensive board and converted the layup to draw the teams even at 64-64 with 2:01 showing on the clock.

Hermannsson put LIU Brooklyn back on top with two free throws 17 seconds later, and Franz Rassman was fouled on a 3-point attempt, and he hit 2-of-3 free throws for Loyola at 1:18 to deadlock the game at 66-66.

Aakim Saintil responded for LIU Brooklyn with a jumper to take the lead with 61 ticks on the clock, but Walker drove and was fouled 18 seconds later, converting both free throws to tie the game again, 68-68.

Jones recorded his second career double-double in the game, scoring a game-high 18 points while pulling down a career-best 14 rebounds. Walker scored 12 and had a career-high seven assists, and Rassman finished with 12. Hubbard scored nine, and Laster added eight for the Greyhounds.

Hernandez’s game-winner tied him for team-high honors with 15 points, matching Saintil’s total. Hermannsson added 14 and seven assists.

The Greyhounds are back in action Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. when they travel to Catonsville, Maryland, to face UMBC.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's basketball team slipped seven spots to No. 13 on this week's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25. The Gaels fell to No. 3 Valparaiso in its season opener Sunday.

Preseason MAAC Player of the Year, senior A.J. English, and sophomore Buffalo-transfer Deyshonee Much scored 12 points each in the loss at Valpo. It marked the first time in three years Iona opened its season in its opponent's building. The Gaels are 0-for-their-last-5 in those contests since its last win over Hawaii-Pacific to open the 1998-99 season.

The Maroon & Gold faces another tough task in its second game at the Pac-12's Oregon State at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis. It is just the sixth time in program history Iona has opened the season with two true road games.

The top three in the CollegeInsider.com poll remained the same as preseason with Wichita State, Gonzaga and Valparaiso leading the charge. BYU and Belmont moved up from the initial release to round out the top five. The Gaels are joined by fellow MAAC member Monmouth at No. 22 as the only two squads in the league receiving votes.

CORVALLIS, OR - The Iona College men's basketball team dropped its second straight game to start the 2015-16 in a 93-73 defeat at Oregon State in non-conference action Gill Coliseum. Senior A.J. English scored 20 points to lead three Gaels in double-figures in the loss.

English connected on four three-point field goals and was 8-for-10 from the charity stripe while adding four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Deyshonee Much had 15 points with three rebounds. He shot 5-for-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. He had four steals, three rebounds, two assists and a block in 23 minutes due to first half foul trouble. Senior Isaiah Williams had 11 points and four assists with a team-high six boards.

Senior Ibn Muhammad's three-pointer from the corner with 6:59 remaining put the Gaels ahead 23-21. Iona would lead 25-23 on a tip-in by Williams just over two minutes later before an 18-4 Oregon State run over the final 4:34 gave the home team a lead it would not relinquish.

In the second half, the Maroon & Gold cut a 22-point deficit to 11 with a 17-6 run over a 4:34 span. Much's three-pointer from the wing with 3:48 to play made the score 77-66. The Beavers answered with a three-ball of their own on the next possession to regain a 14-point lead and the Gaels would not get any closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Oregon State freshman Drew Eubanks scored 19 points to lead his team. He was 8-for-9 from the feild with five rebounds. Senior Gary Payton II had 12 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Four other Beavers posted double-digit points in the win.

Iona returns to New Rochelle for its home opener Friday vs. Delaware with a 7:00 pm tipoff.

Jones Scores 26 In Men’s Basketball’s Wire-To-Wire Win At UMBC

CATONSVILLE, Md. -- Jarred Jones scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Loyola University Maryland led UMBC wire-to-wire in a 76-57 non-conference victory on Monday night at the Retrievers Athletic Center.

Jones made 10-of-16 shots and recorded a double-double for the second game in a row. Tyler Hubbard hit four 3-pointers in the game’s opening seven minutes and finished with 13 points, while Franz Rassman scored eight of his 12 in the second half.

Behind a pair of Hubbard threes and interior baskets by Eric Laster and Cam Gregory, the Greyhounds jumped out to a 10-3 lead. Gregory kicked a pass out to Hubbard for his second three at 15:56, setting the tone for the Greyhounds’ offensively.

MEN'S BASKETBALL USES STRONG SECOND HALF TO BEAT DREXEL 82-74 SATURDAY

Sat, November 21, 2015
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Junior guard Justin Robinson (Lake Katrine, NY/Kingston) scored a career-best 28 points for the second consecutive game and Monmouth outscored Drexel 51-37 in the second half to defeat the Dragons 82-74 on Saturday afternoon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Monmouth improves to 2-1 on the season while Drexel falls to 0-3.

“I’m really proud of our kids, we really stuck together,” said head coach King Rice. “[Drexel head coach] Bruiser Flint and Drexel I thought did a great job with their defensive intensity. They were very physical and made it hard for our guys to get going, but then Justin Robinson got going and Josh James got our defense going.”

Monmouth used a 17-7 run to take the lead for good, going in front with 12:11 remaining on a left-handed slam from Collin Stewart (Glenville, NY/Mekeel Christian Academy). Micah Seaborn (Fort Worth, TX/Prime Prep) knocked down a corner triple, followed by a Stewart trey to extend the lead to six. Je’lon Hornbeak (Arlington, TX/Grace Prep [Oklahoma]) then had five points in a three-possession span, with Seaborn hitting another three in between to extend the lead all the way to 11, 69-58 with 8:52 to go.

The highest the lead extended was that 11-point gap, with Drexel cutting it to as slim as six down the stretch. Rashann London nailed a corner three to cut the Monmouth lead to six with 3:53 to go, but immediately was pushed back to 10 on drives from Robinson and Hornbeak, the latter on a pretty spin move to get through the lane. Robinson hit a slicing drive and reverse to make the lead 11 in the final minute and another London three-ball made it 82-74 before the Dragons allowed Robinson to dribble out the remaining clock.

The Blue and White came out of the locker room hot after halftime, as Deon Jones (Wilmington, DE/Sanford School [Towson]) banked home a pair from the left side to cut into the Drexel lead. Two possessions later, Robinson reeled in a loose ball, stepped outside the three-point arc and drilled a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one. Hornbeak would hit two free throws to give Monmouth the lead, and neither team would lead by more than three until Stewart’s three at 10:36.

Monmouth fell behind 6-0 after four points early from Drexel’s Rodney Williams before a 14-0 run put MU up eight. Robinson heated up with two long threes after finding Josh James (Greenburgh, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) in transition, putting Monmouth up 10-6. The lead cushioned to 14-6 after Chris Brady (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) grabbed two offensive boards and eventually finished his third attempt and Je’lon Hornbeak flashed up the floor to make it 14-6.

Monmouth outshot Drexel from the floor on the day, hitting on 50.9% FG compared to 43.9% for the home team. MU was 46.7% from three and 73.9% from the line, with Drexel 31.8% and 63% in those same areas. Robinson led the way with 28 on 10-17 and 3-7 from deep with four assists and four steals. Hornbeak scored 17 points, his most as a Hawk, with four rebounds on 4-7 shooting. Brady had 10 points and nine boards with Jones tying a career-best with 13 rebounds.

London had 20 on five triples for Drexel, while Rodney Williams and Tavon Allen also found their way into double-figures. Kazembe Abif posted a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Hawks return to action on Thanksgiving night at 6:30pm when they travel to Orlando, FL to open the 2015 Advocare Invitational against Notre Dame on ESPNU.

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - - A second half turnaround allowed the Wilmington University men's basketball team to come back and defeat Mercy, 85-79, on the road in nonconference action on Saturday afternoon.
The comeback started late in the first half as the Wildcats (3-1) found themselves down by as many as 10 points in the opening stanza. But the Wildcats were able to cut the Maverick (1-2) lead to a single point at the half, and then continue with the momentum into to the second half for the victory.
Junior Tyaire Ponzo-Meek paced the Wilmington comeback with 21 second half points, shooting 7-for-10 from the floor and adding 7-of-10 from the foul line in the second half alone. The only shots Ponzo-Meek missed in the second half were from here-point territory.
The Wildcats were able to get back into the game late in the first half by using the three-point shot, getting back-to-back from deep from Drew Johnson II and Joseph Richards to cut a 28-18 deficit to 28-24 with 6:27 to play before the break. Brian Adkins hit another three-point to cut the deficit to 32-27 with 4:29 to play, before following it up with a steal and a fast break dunk for a quick 5-0 run. Five straight free throws actually gave the Wildcats a 37-34 lead with 1:42 to play but Mercy responded with a pair of layups to end the half, going into the locker rooms with a 38-37 lead.
The Mavericks started the second half with a Tyseem Lyles jumper but then the Wildcats took over the game, going on a 10-2 run, capped by back-to-back buckets from Ponzo-Meek to lead 47-42 with 16:34 left in regulation.
Mercy hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 49-49, but Richards answered right back with a three of his own, and the Wildcats never gave up the lead again. The three-pointer sparked a 12-1 spurt, capped by a Adkins three-point with 11:29 to play to give the visitors a 61-50 lead. Back-to-back layups by Ponzo-Meek and Ta'Vaune Griffin gave the Wildcats their largest lead, 65-53, with just over half of the second stanza to play.
The Mavericks battled to within 70-66 with a Lyles' three-pointer, but Ponzo-Meek found Johnson II in the corner for a three-pointer with 4:00 minute to play to thwart the Mavericks' momentum.
Mercy was able to battle back again, getting as close as 76-72, but the defense bulked up and Ponzo-Meek hit four straight free throws before Griffin laid one home to put the Wildcats back up by 10 at 82-72, before settling on the final score of 85-79.
Four of the five Wildcat starters scored in double figures, led by Ponzo-Meek's game high 25 points. He also added six rebound, six assists, and two steals. Adkins finished with 16 points, hitting 3-of-5 from deep. Johnson II also hit three three-pointers, finishing with 12 points. Griffin shot 6-of-8 from the field and finished with a double-double for the Wildcats, scoring 14 points and grabbing a game high 10 rebounds. Paul Medlin hit 3-of-4 from the field, scored seven points, grabbed five rebounds, and picked up four blocks before fouling out.
The Wildcats shot 30-of-56 (53.6 percent) from the field for the game, including 9-of-20 from three-point territory.
The Wildcats have one more road game before playing their first game at the WU Athletics Complex next weekend. The Wildcats will head to Bloomsburg on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. trip.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College men's basketball senior A.J. English poured in a career-high 46 points and set a school and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record with 13 three-point field goals in leading the Gaels to a 101-77 win over Fairfield at the Hynes Center Tuesday night.

The Maroon & Gold trailed by nine points early before rallying to tie on three occasions and took the lead for good with a pair of English free throws at the four-minute mark of the first half that made the score 33-32. It was in the midst of a 18-4 run late in the frame which gave Iona an 11-point advantage with 95 ticks left. Fairfield scored the final five points of the half and trailed by six at halftime.

The visitors got within four points on its first possession but it was as close as they would get. Iona went on a season-best 14-0 run in a 3:41 span and took a 77-55 lead with 12:08 to play. A trio of English three pointers, one from sophomore Deyshonee Much and an electric alley-oop connection from English to junior Taylor Bessick accounted for the scoring in the decisive stretch for the Gaels.

Not to be overlooked was the breakout effort of freshman guard Jahaad Proctor. The rookie came off the bench and scored 20 points in 23 minutes of action. He had previously scored just six points in his first 25 minutes over three games. Proctor was 8-of-11 from the field and 4-of-6 from distance with four rebounds, an assist, a steal and no turnovers.

Junior Jordan Washington's tough play down low opened up the outside for the Iona's sharpshooters. Washington had a season-best 18 points also shooting 8-of-11 from the field with. Senior Isaiah Williams had 12 rebounds including six offensive boards which led to 10 Iona second-chance points.

And now, the low down on English's historic effort. The senior guard shot 15-of-25 from the field, 13-of-19 from beyond the arc and 3-of-4 from the line.

It was the second highest single-game scoring effort in Iona history, behind Goal Club Hall of Famer Warren Issac's 50 points vs. Bates College on Dec. 18, 1964. It broke former teammate Lamont Jones' Hynes Center scoring record of 43 vs. Canisius on Feb. 2, 2012 and tied the single-game MAAC scoring record set by Jim McCaffrey of Holy Cross in 1985. It was also the highest scoring effort in NCAA Division I during the 2015-16 season thus far. It was the ninth effort of 40 or more points in Iona history. In 75-years of Iona basketball, three of the nine high scoring efforts have come in the last five-plus seasons under head coach Tim Cluess. English's previous career-high was 37 points at North Texas last year.

The 13 three-pointers broke former teammate Sean Armand's school and MAAC record of 10 trifectas set vs. Siena on Jan. 3, 2012 at Madison Square Garden. His 19 attempts matched Armand's mark from that contest. The previous Hynes center mark for long distance proclivity was nine, by teammate Schadrac Casimir last season vs. Delaware State. English's previous career-high three-point total was eight set at Dayton during his sophomore campaign. In the second half, English shot 9-for-10 from downtown, hitting his first nine attempts, scoring 32 of the 46 points in the final 20 minutes.

Oh, and he also added a game-high eight assists and three rebounds with two steals. English was involved in some way with 23 of Iona's 37 field goals in the win.

Fairfield had four players score 10 or more points led by Curtis Cobb's 16. Matija Milin had 13 points and six rebounds while guard Jerome Segura posted 11 points and eight assists in the defeat.

The Gaels 19 team three-point field goals matched the second highest total in school history for the second time. The team hit the number last year vs. Monmouth in the MAAC semifinal round.

Iona travels to Marist Friday night to complete its MAAC December play.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Junior Jordan Washington had 22 points and senior Isaiah Williams posted 21 in leading the Iona College men's basketball team to an 83-73 win over Texas Southern in non-conference action. The Gaels set a new program record with their 22nd straight victory at the Hynes Center in their win over the two-time defending SWAC Championship. Only eight other teams in the NCAA currently have a longer streak.

Playing without the services of three returning starters from last season's 26-win team, the Gaels held off the Tigers with a torrid second half shooting effort. Seniors A.J. English and Kelvin Amayo and sophomore Schadrac Casimir combined to score more than 45 points per game last season and were all unavailable due to injury.

Washington shot 10-of-14 from the field while adding three rebounds. Williams shot 8-of-13 from the field, 5-of-5 from beyond the arc and had a team-leading eight rebounds. Rookie Jahaad Proctor chipped in 16 points, three rebounds and two assists off the bench. Grad student Aaron Rountree posted nine points and six rebounds with a career-high nine assists in the win. Sophomore Deyshonee Much had seven points while senior Ibn Muhammad posted four points and four assists and junior Taylor Bessick had four points and four boards to account for the Gaels 83 points.

Iona never trailed in the contest, though the score was tied on three occasions for a total of 1:41 minutes. After Texas Southern's Orlando Coleman hit a three-pointer with 4:54 remaining in the first half to even the game at 24-24, Proctor gave the Maroon & Gold the lead the team would not relinquish with a three-ball on the next possession and led 38-34 at the break.

Nursing a single-digit lead for most of the second half, Bessick's dunk off a Rountree feed put Iona ahead 62-52 with 10:02 left for the team's first lead of 10 or more. Williams' three-pointer from the wing with 7:51 remaining gave Iona its largest lead at 70-57. The Tigers crept back and took advantage of some untimely Iona turnovers with a 12-2 run to make it a one possession game following a Derrick Griffin lob dunk with 4:18 to play. Proctor followed with two free throws but a conventional three-point play by Griffin made the score 74-72 at the 3:45 mark.

A huge three-pointer by Muhammad from straight away stretched the lead back to five points. With a 77-73 advantage and less than 90 seconds remaining, Iona scored the final six points of the contest on a Washington dunk and two free throws each from Much and Proctor.

Coleman scored 23 points off the bench to lead Texas Southern. Former Manhattan commit Chris Thomas had 18 points and six rebounds. Iona held Tiger rookie Derrick Griffin to just seven points and five rebounds after coming into the contest averaging more than 19 and 12. The highly-touted two-sport standout joined the squad four games ago following the completion of a highly successful football campaign for the Tigers.

Iona shot 54.5% for the game including 15-of-24 (62.5%) in the second half.

The Gaels hit the road for the next three games starting at Rhode Island this Saturday.

HAMDEN, CT - The Iona College men's basketball team welcomed the return senior guard A.J. English for the first time in six games in a 78-68 win over Quinnipiac in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the TD Bank Sports Center. Held without a field goal until 4:54 in to the second frame, English scored seven points in a span of 35 seconds to turn a three-point deficit into a four-point lead the Gaels would not relinquish.

Four Gaels recorded double-digit point totals led by a 19-point, 15-rebound effort from junior Jordan Washington. Washington added two blocks, a steal and his first assist of the season in the win.

Senior Isaiah Williams scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half to help the Gaels to a three-point halftime advantage. Williams added eight rebounds, two assists and two steals with four three-point field goals.

English, returning from a hand injury that sidelined him the last five contests, had a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double with a team-leading six assists in 35 minutes.

Freshman Rickey McGill was a huge spark off the bench for the Maroon & Gold in the second half. He had a career-high 11 points connecting on his first four shot attempts after entering the contest for the first time with 17:10 left in the game. Iona was down 36-33 when he entered the contest and outscored Quinnipiac by 12 points his 15:02 of playing time.

The Gaels also had solid play down low from graduate Aaron Rountree with four points and seven rebounds and junior Taylor Bessick with four points and six rebounds.

Iona out rebounded Quinnipiac 57-42 in the contest. It was just the second time this season the Bobcats allowed their opponents to record more rebounds. It was also the second time in two-plus seasons in MAAC play they were out rebounded, the first coming against the Gaels at the Hynes Center on Jan. 24, 2014. Quinnipiac had recorded more rebounds than its opponent in 87% of its contest since Tom Moore took the reins nine seasons ago.

The Gaels also out shot Quinnipiac 38.2% - 30.9% and had a 20-12 assist advantage.

Quinnipiac rookie Abulai Bundu led the home team with 15 points and nine rebounds. Daniel Harris, James Ford, Ayron Hutton and Will Simonton had nine points apiece in the loss.

The Gaels are back in action Monday evening at the Hynes Center when they host Niagara at 7:00 pm.

Widener Men’s Basketball Emerges Victorious in Seesaw Battle With Lycoming

CHESTER, Pa. (Jan. 2, 2016) – Sophomore Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, Del.) nearly recorded a triple-double and junior Kendall Green (Mount Laurel, N.J.) poured in a career-best 21 points to help propel the Widener University men’s basketball team to an 81-74 triumph over Lycoming in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Center.

After the Pride built up a 35-28 advantage at the recess, the teams played out a thriller over the final 20 minutes with eight lead changes and three ties in the second half alone. Trailing by double figures, Lycoming captured the momentum and jumped ahead by getting a layup from David Johnson to make it 48-47 in the opening minutes. The Warriors maintained control and concluded a 27-9 run when Nykolas King sank a free throw to give the guests an eight-point advantage at 55-47 with under 14 minutes left.

Widener, however, battled back and got life when Sambo drove in for a monster dunk following a missed free throw by the Warriors at the other end. Junior John Fender (Wallingford, Pa.) then drained two shots in a row from downtown just past the midway point before Green took over by notching a 3-point play in old fashion. The captain sank a layup and canned the ensuing free throw to put the Pride up by a 62-60 score at the 7:01 mark.

The play by Green set up a photo finish, as the teams would play a game of tug-of-war with the lead changing six times over a span of just 3:16. Fender put the Pride ahead for good by sinking a 3-pointer to make it 71-69 with 3:01 left before two Pride steals resulted in quick layups in transition. This included a key steal by Ryan McMahon (Mount Laurel, N.J.) that he finished on the other end to make it 77-69 with 1:51 remaining. Sambo then made charity shots down the stretch to produce the final outcome.

In a tight first half, Green put the hosts in control when he drove in for a layup and made a free throw to give the hosts a slight advantage slightly before the midway point of the first. After Willie Keep made it a one-point game at 20-19 with a layup at the 7:51 mark, Widener started to break loose and built up a seven-point lead on three occasions before eventually taking a lead by that margin into the break.

Sambo lit up the stat sheet for Widener by ending the game with 16 points, eight rebounds, a career-high eight assists and five blocks. Green registered a career-best 21 points to go along with seven boards, three helpers and two blocked shots. Fender scored 15 points off the bench for the Pride, who set season-best marks as a squad by shooting 54.9 percent from the floor and altering 11 shots in the contest.

Johnson netted 17 points and dished out six assists to lead the way for Lycoming (9-3, MAC Commonwealth 2-2), which had its four-game winning streak snapped with the loss. T.J. Duckett contributed 15 points, and Wallace added eight points and 11 boards.

Widener (5-6, MAC Commonwealth 1-2) returns to action when it visits Albright on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 8:00 p.m.

Balanced Effort Leads Men’s Basketball To Win At Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. -- Andre Walker scored 21 points to lead four Loyola University Maryland players who had 15 or more points, and the Greyhounds defeated Lafayette College, 81-78, Saturday afternoon at the Kirby Sports Center.

Walker also had five assists posted just a single turnover for the third-straight game. Jarred Jones scored 16 of his 18 in the first half, Eric Laster came off the bench to score 16, and Tyler Hubbard made four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points.

Franz Rassman grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds, nine in the second half, for Loyola (3-10 overall, 2-0 Patriot League.

The Greyhounds trailed in the game’s opening minutes, but a baseline dunk by Laster pushed them up with 14:10 to play, sparking a 15-2 Loyola run.

Jones scored in the paint at 8:40, making the lead 12, 23-11, but Lafayette would tally the next eight points to get within four 23-19, on a Nick Lindner jumper at 6:13. Lindner scored a game-high 26 points, but he was just 9-of-24 from the field.

Monty Boykins made two Lafayette free throws moments later, and Loyola’s lead was 25-21, but a Laster three started another run for the Greyhounds, this one 14-2. A Jones jumper with three minutes to go before halftime pushed the lead to 16, 39-23, and the Greyhounds took an 11-point advantage, 42-31, into the locker room at the break.

The Greyhounds held Lafayette (3-10, 0-2) to just 8-of-30 (26.7 percent) from the floor in the first half.

Lindner scored with 10:51 to go in regulation, and the Loyola lead dwindled to six, 57-51, but just over six minutes later, a Walker layup put it to 17, 73-56.

From that point forward, however, it was Lafayette’s turn for a run to close the game. The Leopards 22 of the final 30 points in the game, although they did not get closer than the final margin of three. In that stretch, Lindner scored 12 of his 26 points.

Walker’s 21 matched his career-high set last February in a three-overtime win against Colgate. He went 9-of-10 from the free-throw line in today’s game. As a team, the Greyhounds were 20-of-26 from the charity stripe.

The Greyhounds committed a season-low six turnovers in the game and held Lafayette to 38.5 percent from the field.

Loyola, which is 2-0 in Patriot League play for the first time in its three seasons in the conference, starts a two-game homestand on Wednesday, Jan. 6, when it hosts Lehigh University at 7:30 p.m. in Reitz Arena.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's basketball team used a stingy defensive effort and strong rebounding to overcome an unusually tough shooting night to earn a 65-52 win over Niagara in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the Hynes Center. Senior A.J. English scored 21 points and junior Jordan Washington had 20 to help the Gaels improve to 4-0 in MAAC play, to their third straight win overall, their 24th straight in New Rochelle and the 125th victory for head coach Tim Cluess as the Maroon & Gold's skipper.

With the win, Cluess moved into sole possession of third place on Iona's all-time wins list, trailing only Jeff Ruland (139) and Jim McDermott (319). He passed two other Iona Hall of Famers in Pat Kennedy (124) and Jim Valvano (95) and is 125-60 in five-plus seasons in New Rochelle.

In his second game back in the lineup, English battled for his 21 points on the night with a 6-for-15 shooting effort. He had three three-pointers and was 6-of-6 from the charity stripe while adding four rebounds and three assists. Washington had 16 of his 20 points in the second half while grabbing eight rebounds in just 21 minutes of play. Fresh off a MAAC Player of the Week honor for his efforts in Iona's two wins last week, senior Isaiah Williams had his second double-double in three games with 10 points, while matching a season and career-high with 12 boards for the third time in 2015-16. Graduate Aaron Rountree contributed a season-best 10 points off the bench.

A pair of Niagara freshmen paced the visitors with forwards Marvin Prochet and Dominic Robb recording 11 and 10 points respectively.

For the second straight contest, Iona held its opponent to less than 35.0% shooting as the Purple Eagles converted just 32.8% of its attempts. The Gaels held a 44-38 rebounding advantage. The 52 points surrendered was the lowest of the 2015-16 campagn, and second lowest in 185 games of the Cluess-era.

The Gaels quickly jumped out to a 8-0 advantage and led 10-2 just over six minutes into the contest. A cold stetch that saw Iona go scoreless for more than three minutes and without a field goal for nearly six minutes allowed Niagara back into the game. The Purple Eagles led by as many as four with 4:33 to play before an 11-2 run to end the half gave the Maroon & Gold a five point cushion heading into the break.

Niagara tied the score for the final time with 15:39 to play after Emile Blackman's jumper evened the game at 37-37. The Gaels scored eight straight points over in a 1:14 span, punctuated by a steal and emphatic breakaway dunk by Rountree to regain a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Blackman made it a two-point game with 9:47 to play, but a 10-1 Iona run opened the score to 59-48 at 5:16 following an English drive to the hoop. The Gaels largest margin was represented in the final score after English sank two free throws with 88 seconds remaining.

The Gaels continue a four-game home stand Thursday night vs. Rider in an 8:00 pm tip on ESPN3. It is a second game of a doubleheader with Iona's women's squad who is also unbeaten in MAAC play and hosts nemesis Marist at 5:00 pm.

Mon, January 04, 2016
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Junior guard Justin Robinson (Lake Katrine, NY/Kingston) scored 25 points and added seven assists while Deon Jones (Wilmington, DE/Sanford School [Towson]) pitched in a double-double as Monmouth’s men’s basketball team led for just shy of 39 of the 40 minutes in an 81-66 win over Canisius at The MAC Monday night. The win improves Monmouth to 10-4 on the year and 2-1 in conference, while the Griffs fall to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in league.

“They showed who they were today,” said head coach King Rice. “They came out and they were dedicated to defense. I’m so proud of my kids, proud of the way they responded, proud of the way they fought, and proud of the way they represented Monmouth University.”

Monmouth used a 14-0 first-half run to take a double-digit lead and didn’t look back, only allowing Canisius to get within single-digits once the rest of the game. MU led 5-4 at the 17:58 mark when Josh James (Greenburgh, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) and Micah Seaborn (Fort Worth, TX/Prime Prep Academy) connected on drives ahead of a Jones baseline push to make it 11-4. The run continued with a left-baseline take from Collin Stewart (Glenville, NY/Mekeel Christian Academy) and a putback from Diago Quinn (New York, NY/Lake Forest Academy [IL]). Jones capped the run with four in a row, including two foul shots and the Hawks led 19-4 at the 13:43 mark of the opening half. The lead grew to as many as 16 in the first half, doing so on a Stewart three-point play after a dunk with 6:10 remaining in the half.

After Canisius cut the deficit down to eight with 2:04 to play in the stanza on a Kassius Robertson three, MU ended the period on a 6-0 spurt to lead by 14 at the half. Robinson darted to the rim to score, and Jones tipped in a miss on the fast break with 31 seconds left. MU forced a tie-up at half court resulting in a Malcolm McMillan travel, and Chris Brady (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) followed a Robinson take at the buzzer with a tip-slam to make it 41-27 Monmouth at the half.

Monmouth led by as many as 20 in the second half, doing so during a three-point barrage started with Robinson hitting one at the 12:08 mark. Stewart then drained two in 29 seconds after entering less than 40 seconds prior. MU took a 21-point lead four times in the half, including once on Stewart’s third triple at 7:38 to make it 70-49. Robinson put the Hawks up 77-56 at 5:41 with a trey en route to the 15-point win.

The second half opened with Robinson drilling a three after stepping left around a defender to give MU a 17-point lead with 17:35 left. A Phil Valenti jumper at 16:07 cut the Monmouth lead to 10 before Seaborn hung in the air on an acrobatic shot down the left baseline and finished two possessions later to make it a 14-point Monmouth lead. Robertson hit back-to-back shots to trim the deficit back to 10 but Zac Tillman (Yeadon, PA/Shipley School) made a nice catch and left-handed dunk to bump it back to 12.

Monmouth got 25 points, seven assists and three rebounds from Robinson, who was 9-18 from the floor and made three triples. Jones added his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Brady grabbed 10 boards and Stewart got into double-figures with 14 for the seventh time this year. The Hawks shot 54.2% from the field, 44.4% from downtown and 75% from the stripe while Canisius went 32.2% on field goals, 25% from deep and 63.6% from the charity stripe.

Four Griffs scored into double figures, led by 15 from Jermaine Crumpton on 5-8 shooting. McMillan added 13 and four rebounds, while Robertson scored 12 and Valenti netted 10. The Blue and White outscored Canisius in the paint 48-20 and 17-2 on the fast break. MU trailed for just 15 seconds, doing so in the first 90 seconds of the game.

Monmouth is back on the floor on Saturday afternoon at The MAC with a 2:00 p.m. tip set against Quinnipiac on ESPN3.

Iona MBB Continues To Roll In 90-80 Win Over Marist

Sat, January 09, 2016
NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's basketball team earned its fifth straight win and improved to 6-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic conference play with a 90-80 win over Marist at the Hynes Center. Senior A.J. English scored a game-high 24 points and sophomore Deyshonee Much returned to action after missing three games with a foot injury and netted 21 points in the win.

The Gaels earned their 26th straight win in New Rochelle, extending the nation's seventh longest home win streak. Iona is 6-0 in MAAC play for just the second time in history, matching the feat accomplished to start the 1995-96 campaign.

English's added eight assists and five rebounds and was a perfect 10-for-10 in his high scoring effort. After posting five 20+/5+/5+ contests as a junior, he reached the mark for the first time in 2015-16 after several near misses.

Coming off the bench for the first time in 10 appearances, Much was expected to see limited action in his return to the lineup. His 21 points came on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from beyond the arch. He added six rebounds in his 26 minutes of play.

Three other Gaels recorded double-digits with senior Ibn Muhammad and juniors Taylor Bessick and Jordan Washington posting 11 points apiece. It matched a season-best for Bessick and Muhammad. Bessick added five rebounds while Muhammad had three three-point field goals with two assists and two boards. Washington played just 14 minutes due to foul trouble and had three rebounds and a block in the win.

Iona outshot Marist 50.8%-42.4% with the help of a 59.3% effort in the second half. The Maroon & Gold held a 37-35 advantage on the boards.

After a successful four games in eight day stretch, the Gaels will have nearly a full week off before a highly anticipated matchup with Monmouth at the Hynes Center next Friday (Jan. 15). The Gaels and Hawks, the preseason No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the MAAC, tip off at 9:00 pm in a nationally televised event on ESPNU.

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – In front of a sellout crowd of 3,911 for the second time in three home games this season at The MAC, the Monmouth men’s basketball team beat Quinnipiac 88-74 behind Chris Brady (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields)’s first career double-double and a career-best 20 points from Micah Seaborn (Fort Worth, TX/Prime Prep Academy). The Hawks improve to 11-4 and 3-1 in conference while the Bobcats drop to 5-9 and 2-3 in the league.

“At some point we’ve been able to figure things out this year and come out on top,” said head coach King Rice. “It was a tough win for us today.”

Monmouth never trailed in the second half, only allowing QU within one once and within three with 11:08 to go on a Chaise Daniels layup. Deon Jones (Wilmington, DE/Sanford School [Towson]) muscled one home shortly after and Austin Tilghman (Wilmington, DE/Archbishop Carroll [PA]) got up the floor and put one home from the right side, drawing a foul. Into the timeout, Quinnipiac head coach Tom Moore received a technical foul, and Justin Robinson (Lake Katrine, NY/Kingston) hit one of those to extend the lead to eight. Jones again scored from the inside to bump the lead to 10 with 8:45 remaining.

Quinnipiac hung within that range the rest of the way, getting no closer than seven with 4:33 to play on two Giovanni McLean free throws. Brady collected on the offensive glass and put one back with 3:37 left to widen the gap to 11, and MU knocked in 19 free throws in the final 3:00 to secure the win.

MU got an immediate baseline dunk from Brady just 10 seconds into the second period. Seaborn rattled home a jumper before Harris got QU within one from the foul line at the 16:24 mark. Seaborn stayed hot, racing the floor to score plus the foul to extend Monmouth’s lead to four, 44-40.|

Monmouth led 37-35 at the break after strong bookends to the first half, opening up on a 12-0 push and closing with eight of the last 10 heading to the locker room. Robinson drilled a left-wing three 39 seconds in and was fouled, converting the four-point play before getting inside and drawing contact for a three-point play moments later. Seaborn drilled a three in between the Robinson plus-ones, and MU led 12-0 just 2:51 into the game.

Quinnipiac answered back with a 19-3 run to take a 19-15 lead on a Daniel Harris three with 11:08 to go in the half. QU led for the next nine minutes until the 2:16 mark, when a Zac Tillman (Yeadon, PA/Shipley School) dunk tied the game at 32. MU closed the half with a pair of free throws and a corner three from Seaborn to take a two-point lead after 20 minutes.

Four Hawks worked into double-figures, including Brady, whose 16 points and 13 rebounds were both career bests in addition to three blocks. Seaborn tied a career-high with 20 points and added in six rebounds, while Robinson put in 15 points and dished out four assists. Deon Jones scored 11 points, all in the second half, and grabbed nine boards of which seven came in the second 20 minutes. Collin Stewart (Glenville, NY/Mekeel Christian Academy) added nine points while Tillman had seven. MU shot 37.1% from the field, 33.3% from deep and 76% from the foul line while holding QU to 33.3% from the floor and 34.6% from downtown.

Harris hit five threes for the Bobcats and finished with 19, while McLean scored all of his 15 points in the second half. Abdulai Bundu pitched in a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. Quinnipiac outrebounded Monmouth 50-46, with MU grabbing 35 defensive rebounds to the Bobcats’ 34. The Hawks outplayed QU in the paint 34-26 and 11-3 on the fast break. The win marks Monmouth’s first over Quinnipiac since 1/2/10.

Monmouth is back to the floor on Monday night at Webster Bank Arena to take on Fairfield. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m. on SNY and ESPN3.

English Earns Second MAAC Player of the Week Honor

EDISON, NJ - Iona College men's basketball senior A.J. English earned his second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week honor and third in his career in his efforts to lead the Gaels to a perfect 3-0 effort in league play at the Hynes Center. It is the second straight week a member of the Maroon & Gold earned the honor following classmate Isaiah Williams on Jan. 4.

English averaged 23.0 points, 6.0 assists and 4.3 rebounds vs. Niagara, Rider and Fairfield. The senior guard - who returned last week after missing five games with a hand injury - was 22-of-45 from the field with seven three-pointers while shooting 18-of-20 from the charity stripe.

He began the week with 21-points in a win over Purple Eagles Monday. English posted 24 points in each of the team’s wins over Rider and Marist recording seven and eight assists respectively. Against Marist, he posted his first 20+ point, 5+ rebound, 5+ assist game of the season after several flirtations in his first nine appearances. He is the only returning player in the NCAA to average those numbers and was one of two in 2015-16 along with former Ohio State and current Los Angeles Laker guard D’Angelo Russell.

The Gaels are 6-0 in league play for the second time in history and the first time in 21 seasons. The last team to win its first six MAAC contests was Siena in route to 14 straight in 2009-10. The Gaels look to improve to 7-0 for the first time ever vs. Monmouth Friday night at 9:00 pm on ESPNU.

STRONG SECOND HALF PROPELS MEN担 BASKETBALL TO 86-74 WIN AT FAIRFIELD

BRIDGEPORT, CT Micah Seaborn (Fort Worth, TX/Prime Prep Academy) scored a career-high 24 points and Monmouth allowed just 27 second-half points in an 86-74 win over Fairfield at Webster Bank Arena on Monday night. The win moves the Blue and White to 12-4 and 4-1 in conference, while Fairfield falls to 8-8 and 2-4 in league.

“It was a great feeling to have all of our guys back together,” said head coach King Rice. “I thought Sydney Johnson’s team played extremely hard, but tonight we were the better team.”

Monmouth held Fairfield to 27 second-half points, getting four stops to set the tone for a solid half defensively. Trailing by seven at the break, Justin Robinson (Lake Katrine, NY/Kingston) hit a step-back jumper and Chris Brady (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) powered to the rim for a dunk to cut it to three. Fairfield reopened a pair of seven-point leads in the following minutes, but MU answered with five in a row from Seaborn before Je’lon Hornbeak (Arlington, TX/Prime Prep Academy) drilled a right-wing triple to put the Hawks up 54-53 at 13:35. Kevin Degnan immediately answered with a three off the glass but Seaborn netted five more consecutively including a contested three to put the Blue and White up for good at 11:50.

Seaborn stayed hot, banging home another long ball to extend the lead to six. MU’s lead grew to eight when Austin Tilghman (Wilmington, DE/Archbishop Carroll [PA]) attacked at the 9:21 mark, scoring and drawing contact. Collin Stewart (Glenville, NY/Mekeel Christian Academy) pulled up and hit from downtown to keep it at eight 40 seconds later before Fairfield cut it back to four on consecutive threes from Curtis Cobb and Marcus Gilbert at the 6:40 mark.

Brady put an exclamation point on with a soaring dunk at 4:44 to put Monmouth up seven, and Robinson and Seaborn made shots on three of four possessions to put away the 12-point victory. Robinson’s jumper in that stretch put the Hawks up 10 with 2:13 remaining, and Seaborn took a great feed from Hornbeak on a 2-on-1 to convert and make the margin 12 with 1:15 to go.

Fairfield took a 47-40 lead at the break after hitting eight threes in the opening 20 minutes. The Stags led by as many as 12 in the period, going up 36-24 at 6:58 on Tyler Nelson’s third straight layup. Josh James hit from beyond the arch to trim it to give but Gilbert hit another triple to knock it back to eight with 20 seconds remaining. Robinson made one free throw before the half to make it 47-40 heading into the locker room.

Seaborn finished with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting including four threes. Stewart added 15 in his first career start on 5-of-10 and three from deep, and Robinson netted 14, six rebounds and four assists. MU shot 53.2% from the field, 50% from deep on 12-of-24, and 67% from the foul line.

Gilbert led the Stags with 20 and six rebounds on 7-of-12 shooting, while Cobb added 16 and nine boards. Nelson scored 12 and Jerome Segura had six assists as Fairfield shot 50% from the field, 41.4% from downtown and 54.5% from the stripe. MU outscored Fairfield 31-7 off 18 turnovers by the Stags.

The Hawks are back in action Friday night against Iona. Tip is set for 9:00 p.m. on ESPNU.

JUSTIN ROBINSON SCORES 1,000TH CAREER POINT AS MEN’S BASKETBALL ROLLS PAST SIENA, 85-69

Mon, January 18, 2016
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – With 4:25 remaining in the first half, Justin Robinson (Lake Katrine, NY/Kingston) darted to the rim and netted his 1,000th career point, becoming the 22nd Hawk in program history to reach the milestone. He ended the game with 23 points, Deon Jones (Wilmington, DE/Sanford School [Towson]) scored 21 and Monmouth beat Siena Monday at The MAC, 85-69. The Hawks improve to 14-4 on the season and 6-1 in the league, while Siena falls to 11-7 and 4-3 in conference.

“I’m really proud of my team,” said head coach King Rice. “They came and had a great effort out there today. I thought Deon Jones took over in the second half.”

Leading by five at the half, MU came out with a 12-2 run to open the lead to 15, getting nine of those points from Jones including a three to make it 53-38 Monmouth with 16:12 remaining. After a Javion Ogunyemi bucket halted the run, Micah Seaborn (Fort Worth, TX/Prime Prep Academy) took a Robinson feed in transition and hit a three to extend the lead to 56-40.

Siena battled back with a 7-0 spurt including five consecutive from Brett Bisping to trim the deficit to nine, keeping it within four of that margin until the 10:07 mark, when Siena came its closest in the second half at eight on a Lavon Long free throw.

Leading by 11 with 6:49 to play, Collin Stewart (Glenville, NY/Mekeel Christian Academy) knocked home a long ball from the wing and shortly after, Jones put home a corner three to extend the lead to 74-57. Robinson pushed the lead to 19 with 3:49 to play on a dribble drive, and Daniel Pillari (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) checked in with 3:08 remaining and MU up by that margin. Pillari took a feed from the post from Diago Quinn (New York, NY/Lake Forest Academy [IL]) and knocked home a three from in front of the MU bench, his first career points. Pillari was fouled on the next possession and made one of two, and with 36 seconds left, the sophomore pulled up from straight on and nailed a long three, making Monmouth’s lead 19. Siena got a late three from Jimmy Merrill to make the final 85-69.

Robinson’s 1,000th career point tied the game at 28 with 4:25 to play in the half as the junior worked the baseline before going up and in. The teams traded slim leads the remainder of the half until MU scored the last four of the period on a Robinson jumper and two Chris Brady (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) foul shots gave the Hawks a 41-36 halftime lead.

MU came out hot, taking a 15-4 lead behind eight points from Robinson. Jones again extended the lead to 11 with 12:31 to play in the half before Siena cut in. Kenny Wormley’s layup at 7:45 trimmed it to four, and Ogunyemi tipped one in to bring the Saints within two. Nico Clareth found himself open on the left side, hitting a go-ahead three with 5:55 remaining in the half and adding to it with a jumper on the next trip. MU tied it on a Zac Tillman (Yeadon, PA/Shipley School) free throw before leading at the break.

Robinson scored 23, topping 20 for the 11th time this season, on a career high 11 field goals. He added four assists and three steals, while Jones netted 21 on 8-for-11 and a perfect 3-for-3 from deep. Je’lon Hornbeak (Arlington, TX/Prime Prep Academy [Oklahoma]) also found double-figures with 10, while Brady pitched in eight boards and three blocks. MU shot 46.9% from the field, 42.3% from deep and 77.8% from the foul line. The Hawks forced 21 Siena turnovers and spun them into 26 points, while also outscoring Siena’s bench 33-25.

Siena posted a 40.3% shooting percentage from the floor, 37.5% from deep and 72.2% from the stripe. The Saints were led by Ogunyemi’s double-double of 14 points and 10 boards, while Clareth scored 15 and added six rebounds.

Monmouth is back on the floor Thursday night for a visit to Draddy Gymnasium for an 8:00 p.m. tip with Manhattan on ESPN3.
