SUBJECT: Four First Half Goals Carry Men’s Soccer to 5-2 Victory over Bentley in Season Opener
DATE: September 2, 2021
djl
NEWARK, Del. - - Even time couldn’t keep the Wilmington University men’s soccer team off the scoreboard, as they picked up right where they left off the 2019 season, beating Bentley, 5-2, in the 2021 season opener on Thursday at the WU Athletics Complex.
The Wildcats (1-0) led all of NCAA Division II in goals, assists, and points in 2019, but haven’t played a countable game since November 23, 2019. That didn’t stop the Wildcats on Thursday, as they put up four in the first half in route to the lid lifting victory.
One of the few leftovers from the 2019 team is All-American Shawn Genus and he got the scoring started once again on Thursday. He found a sliver of light in the box off a pass from Hakim Williams and slid it home under the keeper in the 17th minute.
The Wildcats continued to press, eventually scoring three goals in a four-minute span. Freshman Reinoud van Eijk beat the keeper to the near post a minute later for the 2-0 lead before freshman Shoki Yoshida scored his first goal as a Wildcat off a long ball from Genus in the 21st minute to make it 3-0.
The lone hiccup of the first half for the Wildcats was giving up a penalty kick in the 35th minute that the Falcons (0-1) put home.
But Yoshida gave the Wildcats the momentum once more heading into the break, providing a highlight reel goal on the back post. Richard Thompson sent a cross in and Yoshida left his feet for a side volley, going far post to make it 4-1 in the 43rd minute.
After the break, Shawn Genus added to his game with his second goal of the game, beating two defenders to a through ball from Williams, again beating the keeper low for the 5-1 lead in the 54th minute. Genus finished with two goals and an assist for five points.
The Wildcats outshot the Falcons, 22-3, despite the Falcons earning more corners, 7-6.
The Wildcats will try to keep the momentum going on Sunday as they welcome 15th ranked Adelphi to the Complex. The opening whistle is set for 3:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Four Wildcats Named CACC Players of the Week to Kickstart 2021 Fall Campaign
DATE: September 7, 2021
djl
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - The 2021 fall season has finally started and it didn’t take long for the Wilmington University student-athletes to make their mark in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference as the conference office has announced this week’s Players of the Week.
The Wildcats produced four CACC Players of the Week, as Shawn Genus was named the CACC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, Richard Thompson was named the CACC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, Emily Camp was named the CACC Women’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week, and Yailynn Ramirez was named the CACC Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week.
Shawn Genus (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) leads the CACC with seven points through two games played, scoring three goals and adding an assist last week. He scored twice in the season opener, adding an assist on the game-winning goal in the team’s 5-2 victory over Bentley. He then scored the game-tying goal in the 64th minute against #15 Adelphi, a game the Wildcats would go on to win, 3-1. Five of his six shots last week were on goal.
Richard Thompson (Montego Bay, Jamaica) made his mark in his first two games as a Wildcat, assisting on two goals while leading the team to a 2-0-0 week. Both of his assists came against Bentley in the opener, helping the team to a 2-0 lead and a 4-1 lead last Thursday.
Emily Camp (Pittsgrove, N.J.) stopped all five shots she saw in the women’s soccer season opening win over Daemen on Friday afternoon. She recorded her fourth shutout as a Wildcat with those five saves, keeping the clean sheet in the 2-0 victory.
Yailynn Ramirez (North East, Md.) was named the CACC Rookie of the Week after finishing eighth overall at the 20th Annual WUXC Invite on Saturday morning. She ran the 5K in 21:45.2 in her first collegiate cross country meet, becoming the fourth CACC member to cross the line, and first not in a West Chester or Felician uniform.
Four other Wildcats were named to the Weekly Honor Roll in their respective sports. Men’s soccer’s Shoki Yoshida scored two goals in his Wilmington debut to earn spot on the Honor Roll. Volleyball’s Angel Oliver tied two single match records with 10 block assists and 13 total blocks to earn a spot on the CACC Honor Roll. Cross country’s Logan Strouse finished second overall and Matt Gonzalez placed sixth overall to earn spots on the Honor Roll as well.

SUBJECT: Molloy’s First Half Goal Hold Strong as Women’s Soccer Falls, 1-0
DATE: September 11, 2021
djl
NEWARK, Del. - - A first half goal proved to be enough for Molloy, as they escaped with a 1-0 victory over the Wilmington University women’s soccer team on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
Molloy (4-0-0) won its fourth straight contest by a 1-0 score to start the season. The Wildcats (1-1-1) are proving to hang with the perennial east region power teams in the early going of the 2021 season, even outshooting the Lions, 8-5, on Saturday.
Molloy got on the board in the 28th minute, turning a fortuitous bounce into the lone goal of the game. Joanna Graca broke from the pack down the right side of the field. She put a shot on frame that Emily Camp came diving out to get a hand on, but he rebound bounced right to Sienna Nicolich who redirected the ricochet into the back of the net.
Krysta Memis had a chance with 18 minutes left in the second half deep inside the box. Alexis Johnson played the long ball to Memis in the box, but her turn around shot sailed wide of the net.
Samantha Emmi had a free kick opportunity from 25 yards out, but her attempt was saved with 10 minutes to play, which ended up being the last shot the Wildcats would get off in the contest.
The Wildcats outshot the Lions, 6-2, in the second half, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Lion goalkeeper Jackie Carty made three saves for her fourth shutout of the year.
Another tough matchup waits for the Wildcats this week, as they got to Mercy on Wednesday afternoon. The opening whistle in Dobbs Ferry, New York is set for 12:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Two Second Half Goals by No. 13 Men’s Soccer Provide 2-1 Comeback against SNHU
DATE: September 11, 2021
djl
MANCHESTER, N.H. - - A pair of second half goals brought the No. 13 Wilmington University men’s soccer team back from a halftime deficit at Southern New Hampshire, winning 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Penmen Stadium.
After the Penmen (1-2-0) scored in the 17th minute, the nationally ranked No. 13 Wildcats (3-0-1) needed second half goals from defender Carson Talboys and forward Shawn Genus for the comeback victory against the perennial East Region power. Talboys scored his first goal as a Wildcat in the 63rd minute and Genus followed it up with his fourth of the year in the 70th minute.
The Penmen outshot the Wildcats in the first half, 6-4, capitalizing on a counter in the 17th minute. Nicolas Gonzalez streaked down the left side and crossed it in front of the goalmouth. Nadjib Chibout was there to get on the end of it, sliding into the cross to redirect it into the back of the goal.
The Wildcats collected three corner kicks in the early going of the second half, finally getting on the end of one in the 63rd minute. Richard Thompson sent a corner to the back post, finding Carson Talboys who headed it home to tie the match with less than 28 minutes to play.
Moments later, the Wildcats forced the issue getting a turnover at midfield and racing the other way. Reinoud van Eijk pressured the Penmen into a turnover and Yohan Kim played a through ball that Shawn Genus raced onto. He maneuvered around the goalkeeper the slid it into the empty net for the 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes to play in regulation.
The contest got tight down the stretch, as the Wildcats found themselves playing a man down following a red card with 15 minutes to play. From there, the Penmen collected seven shots, but Konstantinos Parisis made one save while the rest missed the net.
Parisis made two saves for the Wildcats in the win while Penmen netminder Santiago Rojas recorded three stops in the loss. The Penmen led in shots, 14-8, for the match.
The Wildcats return home to face Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday. The opening whistle is set for 4:00 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.

SUBJECT: No. 13 Men’s Soccer Again Comes From Behind for 2-1 Victory Over No. 16 Gannon

DATE: September 18, 2021
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - Pol Romero scored his first collegiate career goal in fine fashion, heading one home in the final four minutes to help the No. 13 Wilmington University men’s soccer team comeback and defeat No. 16 Gannon on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

It is the second victory over a United Soccer Coaches Top 25 team this year, defeating No. 15 Adelphi early this year at home as well.

The Wildcats (5-0-1) controlled the tempo and possession of the ball for the majority of the first half, but they didn’t form any real scoring opportunities. They led 6-3 in shots and 8-0 in corners in the first, but the score was knotted at 0-0.

Shawn Genus had a free kick from 22 yards outs that Golden Knight (4-1-0) goalkeeper Maximiliano Rocco tipped over the crossbar in the 54th minute, the first real test for keeper in the game. Genus had another opportunity moments later, but his flick up and over a charging Rocco was too hard, missing everything over the top.

Of all the corners the Wildcats took in the contest (14), it ended up being a Gannon corner that started the scoring in the second half. Lennox Crews sent a bending ball into the box and Sergio Del Castillo was there to head it towards the back post and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead in the 75th minute.

But the Wildcats responded less than a minute later, getting a fortuitous deflection to tie the game, 1-1. Tyler Guadagno had the ball on the right wing, crossing one into the box. Yohan Kim headed the ball to continue its path into the box and a Gannon defender tried clearing the ball, but instead it went off his leg and into the back of the net. Gannon held the lead for just 33 seconds.

With time running out, Pol Romero found himself all alone on the six-yard box. Shawn Genus played a perfect ball with his left foot into the box and all Romero had to do was get it on frame. He headed it home back towards the near post, giving the Wildcats the 2-1 lead with 3:48 to play.

Gannon turned up the pressure in the final minutes, playing multiple balls into the box and gaining two corner kicks. But Konstantinos Parisis made the one stop he needed to diving to his left with 1:27 left to preserve the win.

The Wildcats outshot the Golden Knights, 15-8, and gained more corners, 14-5. Parisis made three saves with Richard Thompson also clearing a ball off the line for a team total of four saves.

The Wildcats begin their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference portion of their schedule this upcoming week, starting with Jefferson on the road on Tuesday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Philadelphia.
