SUBJECT: Shawn Church Three-Pointer Caps 17-Point Comeback for Men’s Basketball, 76-75, at Millersville

DATE: November 15, 2017
djl

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - - Down 17 points with 8:55 remaining in regulation, the Wilmington University men’s basketball team made a comeback for the ages as Shawn Church hit a three-pointer with four seconds left to stun Millersville, 76-75, on the road at Pucillo Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Wildcats’ (2-1) redshirt sophomore Jermaine Head finished with 32 points, 21 of which came in the second half, to lead the furious comeback, adding nine rebounds and the assist to Church on the game-winner. Nick Richards poured in 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting while Church finished with 16 points, hitting 2-of-6 from downtown.

Although the comeback was the highlight, the Wildcats weren’t trailing the Marauders (1-2) the entire game. Leading 23-22 in the first half, the Wildcats received three-pointer from Church and Head to give the visitors their largest lead of the game, 29-22, with 6:05 left in the half. The Wildcats would be stuck on 29 for the next 3:39 as the Marauders took a 30-29 lead. Tied at 33, the home team scored the final two buckets of the half to head into the break leading, 37-33.

Millersville continued to lead early in the second half, pushing the lead out to 46-37 with 17:15 showing on the clock, forcing head coach Dan Burke into a 30-second timeout. The first double-digit lead of the game came with 16:01 to play and ballooned to 52-39 on a Marauder three-pointer with 15:18 left.

Head cut the deficit down to single digits, 54-45, with 11:40 to play, but a Maurader 6-0 run pushed the deficit back out to 60-45 for the Wildcats. A layup and two free throws moments later had the home team with their largest lead of the night, 64-47, with 8:55 showing on the clock.

But that is when the Wildcats made their move.

Layups from Head, Masner Beauplan, and Head again quickly cut the lead to 11 before a Nick Richards’ dunk set the wheels in motion for the comeback.

A Church old-fashioned three-point play brought the deficit back to within single digits before a Vincent Kent layup saw the lead shrink to 71-64 with 4:11 left. Richards hit a jumper to cut the deficit to five points before Head hit a three-pointer to bring the score to 74-71 with 2:15 left in regulation.

The Marauders missed their next jumper with 43 seconds left and Head thought he tied the game with a step back three-pointer, but his feet were on the line to only bring the Wildcats within a single point at 74-73 with 16 ticks left.

Out of a timeout, Millersville only hit one of two from the foul line, setting up Church’s game-winning three-pointer. Head drove the lane with Church in the corner. The defense collapsed on Head in the paint and he made the right move in kicking it out to Church for a wide-open three-pointer. Church sank the three for the 76-75 lead with four seconds left.

A last ditch three-pointer by Millersville would not fall for the home team.

The Wildcats shot 50-of-36 in the second half, but only 2-of-11 from beyond the arc. They finished the game 31-of-65 from the field (47.7 percent) and 4-of-19 from deep.

The Wildcats remain on the road for one more contest, as they head outside of Buffalo, New York on Saturday for a bout with Daemen College. The opening tip is set for 2:00 p.m.

(resending to correct time on winning free throws)

Tanner Turner-Rush Saves the Day at :00.1 for Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball in 61-59 Win at Shippensburg

Junior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) drilled three free throws with one tenth of a second left, helping Goldey-Beacom overcome a furious rally from Shippensburg and notch a 61-59 victory in Shippensburg, PA.

Goldey-Beacom in the first quarter raced to a 21-10 lead by shooting 53 percent (9-of-17) from the floor and limiting Shippensburg to a mere 27 percent (4-of-15). Senior Margherita Giubilei (Cesena, Italy) had six points and four rebounds in the period with sophomore Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) also scoring six points for the Lightning, who recorded a 14-5 rebound edge in that span.

Shippensburg fought its way back at the end of the third quarter from a 17-point deficit, closing the period on a 15-3 run to move within 39-34. Ariel Jones scored 10 points in the spurt.

The Lightning got things organized early in the fourth quarter, using an 8-2 spurt to regain momentum for a 49-39 lead with 7:05 remaining. Giubilei and freshman Alanna Speaks (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth’s) each hit a 3-pointer in that span.

The Raiders then found themselves in a 55-44 hole with 4:12 before scoring the next nine points for a two-point deficit with 2:12 to play. Jones continued her impeccable play with seven points in that span.

The margin remained the same at 58-56 and Shippensburg got a fortunate bounce off McGrogan’s missed free throw that went out of bounds and was given to the home side. The Raiders had no timeouts and worked the ball on the right wing to Gabriela Blackburn, who canned a 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left for her side’s first lead since 5-4.

GBC called timeout to move the ball ahead to quarter court and looked for the win. Turner-Rush got the ball off a screen and was hacked as she was attempting a 3-pointer, sending her to the line. She calmly knocked down all three attempts to help the Lightning move to 3-0 in the series.

Corey Taite’s 40 Points and Marcellus Livingston’s 30 Lift Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball in Wild Shootout Over Adelphi

Junior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) went on a tear with 40 points and freshman Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) netted 30 for Goldey-Beacom, which rallied from down 18 points for a wild 113-111 victory over Adelphi at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Taite was getting it done with his inside and outside game, showing relentless play in besting his career best of 29 points set November 12 against Southern New Hampshire. He also went 14-for-18 from the line and canned four 3-pointers over 35 minutes.

Taite moved into 14th in school history with 853 career points, his four assists bump him to eighth with 204 and he now is fifth with 223 career free throws.

The school’s individual record for most points in a game is 54, set by Phil Melillo against Bainbridge Prep on January 4, 1972. The Lightning’s point total is two shy of the team best in the modern era, accomplished in 2007 against Columbia Union and equaled last season at Nyack.

Livingston had a game of his own, going 11-for-13 from the line with 11 rebounds for his first career double-double. On top of his personal bests for points and rebounds, he also canned a season-high four 3-pointers.

GBC trailed as much as 48-30 with 4:44 left in the first half and clawed its way back. A 14-0 run early in the second half, courtesy of Livingston’s eight points turned an 11-point deficit into a 68-65 lead with 16:31 left.

The game was tied at 105 when senior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) converted an old-fashioned three-point play for a 108-105 margin with 1:14 left.

After a Panthers turnover, junior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) hit a free throw with 23 seconds to play for a 109-105 cushion. Tavon Ginyard kept Adelphi in it by canning a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left for a one-point game.

Taite hit twice from the stripe with 12 seconds to play for a 111-108 margin, but Conor McGuinnes’ layup for Adelphi with seven seconds to play again cut the deficit to one.

Taite again was called upon to deliver from the line and he did, hitting a pair with 6.3 seconds to go for a 113-110 game.

McGuinnes was fouled with four tenths of a second left to deny any chance of a 3-pointer to tie. He made the first and deliberately missed the second to look for an offensive tip. Terrell Martin-Garcia had a hand on it for the Panthers, but his tip would not go as time expired.

Thompson scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting with eight rebounds and senior Isiah Graves (Atlantic City, NJ) added 10 for the Lightning, who shot 57 percent (39-of-68) from the field with nine 3-pointers.

GBC (5-6) overcame the unbelievable play of Jack Laffey, who poured in 45 points on 15-of-21 shooting and was 11-for-17 from 3-point range over 34 minutes before fouling out. Michael Coffey scored 19 points, Ginyard had 10 and 13 rebounds with Austin Beech netting 13 points for the Panthers.

Adelphi (4-8) was forced into 20 turnovers, giving Goldey-Beacom’s opponents at least 19 turnovers in all 11 games this season.

Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday visits Georgian Court for an 8:00 pm contest in Lakewood, NJ. The women’s contest between the same schools precedes that at 6:00 pm.

Alanna Speaks’ Free Throw Lifts Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball to 48-47 Win at Felician

Freshman Alanna Speaks (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth’s) hauled in a crucial offensive rebound and converted a free throw with 7.4 seconds left, giving Goldey-Beacom a 48-47 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win at Felician in Rutherford, NJ.

Felician began to take control by scoring 10 straight points is just over four minutes for a 38-28 lead with 1:29 remaining in the third quarter. Sophia Guerrier netted five points in that span and capped it with a layup.

But the Lightning fought back. Trailing 40-32 entering the fourth quarter, the visitors scored the first nine points of the period in just five minutes for a one-point cushion. Speaks was just getting started with five points in that time, including the go-ahead 3-pointer for Goldey-Beacom’s first lead since 8-6.

Danielle Gibson drilled a 3-pointer with 2:13 left to give Felician a 45-44 lead. After a series of empty possessions, Goldey-Beacom got the ball back once again looking for the lead.

Senior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) was called upon in the last minute and she delivered. After missing a shot, Bryson got her own rebound and made a layup with 34 seconds to play for a 46-45 contest.

Felician then had its chance for the lead and came through. Gibson was handed the ball near the top of the key and with her foot on the line, hit a long two-point shot with 14 seconds remaining for a 47-46 Golden Falcons lead.

GBC then had many options to turn to with the ball and no shot clock. It decided on junior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA), who drove to the goal and was fouled with 8.6 seconds to go. After making the first free throw for a tie game, she missed the second and Speaks ripped down the rebound before she was hacked.

After missing the first free throw, Speaks converted the second for a 48-47 lead. GBC had a foul to give and used it with 3.8 seconds left to set up the final possession. Gibson this time decided to drive toward the tin, but Bryson got a hand on her shot and the ball harmlessly floated away as time expired.
