EVANSTON, IL - The Rider University wrestling team took home ninth place out of 42 teams at the 54th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Friday. The Broncs scored 60 team points on the backs of podium finishes by junior Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) and senior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, DE/Caravel Academy) to beat out Oklahoma by a narrow 1.5 point margin for ninth.

Walsh began the day with a semifinal victory by 15-5 major decision over unseeded Lorenzo De La Riva of CSU Bakersfield, setting up a matchup with two time defending 157 pound NCAA champion and 1st ranked 165 pound wrestler Isaiah Martinez of Illinois in the finals. Walsh lost in a hard fought 10-6 decision, improving upon his third-place finish from last year with a silver medal.

Wolfe lost his semifinals bout to ninth-ranked and third-seeded Aaron Studebaker of Nebraska, who would go on to win the tournament, by a 3-1 decision, forcing Wolfe into the consolations.

Wolfe would be faced with the challenge of a rematch from day one against 19th-ranked and 10th-seeded Ricky Robertson of Wisconsin. Robertson would prevail in this matchup with a 9-6 decision, placing Wolfe in a battle against fifth-seed Kevin Beazley of Old Dominion, who is ranked 12th at 197. Wolfe would win the match by medical forfeit to take home fifth place and outpace his seven seed.

Sophomore 133-pounder Anthony Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park Regional) began the day with a matchup against Eli Stickley of Wisconsin, who would defeat him by 16-0 technical fall to end his tournament. Cefolo went 3-2 in the tournament.

Freshman 141 Evan Fidelibus (Easton, PA/Easton Area) would begin his second day of competition with a victory by fall in 1:39 over Nicholas Villareal of Arizona State. Fidelibus would then lose to seventh-seeded Christopher Carton of Iowa by fall in 2:12 to finish his competition with a record of four wins and two losses in his first Midlands.

Sophomore 174 Dean Sherry (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) opened day two with a matchup against seventh-seeded Ryan Christensen of Wisconsin. Christensen would beat Sherry by fall in 5:38, leaving Sherry with a 2-2 record to end the tournament.

Sophomore 285 Ryan Cloud (Brookville, OH/Northmont) saw his tournament end with a matchup against Mike Kosoy of North Carolina State, who defeated him by 10-2 major decision to move on. Cloud had two wins and two losses at the end of his tournament.

The Broncs next competition will be on Thursday, January 12, when they host the Golden Eagles of Clarion at 6 p.m. in an Eastern Wrestling League matchup.

Subject: WREST: Quinlan, Pelusi Take Fourth at David H. Lehman F&M Open
To: "dawvoice3@gmail.com" <dawvoice3@gmail.com>

January 7, 2017

Final Brackets

LANCASTER, Pa. – Paddy Quinlan (141) and Antonio Pelusi (who competed unattached at 285) both secured fourth-place finishes to pace Franklin & Marshall's wrestling team at its fifth annual home wrestling tournament, the David H. Lehman F&M Open in Lancaster on Saturday.

To view the final brackets, click here.

P. Quinlan opened his day with three straight victories, including a pin of Princeton's Jordan Reich at 3:38 in the 141-pound championship bracket to reach the Quarterfinals. After dropping his next match, Quinlan recorded two more pins in the wrestle backs, both in the first period, to make his way into the Consolation Semifinals.

The junior captain found his was in the third-place match after an injury forfeit from his opponent but had to settle for fourth after a forfeit of his own.

Pelusi, who is redshirting this year, followed an opening-match loss in the championship bracket by wrestling all the way back to the third-place match with six consecutive wins that saw the 2016 NCAA Qualifier collect a pair of majors.

In the battle for third, Pelusi took on N.C State's Michael Boykin and came up short in the first sudden victory period by a 3-1 score.

After falling by a narrow 5-2 decision in his opening match, Dan Martoccio followed with three straight dominant performances, reaching the 133-pound Consolation Semifinals with a pin (1:00), a tech. fall (16-0) and a major decision (14-2). However, Martoccio was edged in his next bout, falling by a tight 16-12 score.

At 165, Robbie King rolled past his first opponent with a 17-1 tech. fall, but the Diplomats' senior captain was forced to withdraw from his next match due to injury before a pin in consolations derailed his tournament.

Former F&M All-American Rick Durso also took part in the 165-pound bracket, wrestling unattached and fighting all the way to the Championship Semifinals. After Durso was edged by a 5-3 decision, he recorded a first-period pin (2:04) and a 3-1 decision in the wrestle backs to take third place.

Anthony Mancini began his tournament with a pair of decisions, which included a 5-2 victory against Clarion's Greg Bulsak to reach the 184-pound Quarterfinals. After being dealt a hard-fought 14-12 loss, Mancini saw his run come to an end with another heartbreaking loss, falling by a 3-2 decision in the wrestle backs.

Competing unattached, and fresh off a third-place finish at the Lock Haven Classic on Dec. 29, 197-pounder Philip Robilotto looked in control with a 9-0 major and a 19-0 tech. fall in his first two matches of the day. Dropping down to the wrestle backs after being pinned in the Championship Semifinals, Robilotto tallied a 7-6 decision but had his day draw to a close in his next matchup.

Edgar Garcia secured a 12-5 decision in the 125-pound consolation bracket before seeing his tournament come to an end in the next round. Sam Butler and Nick Maher both found success in the 149-pound wrestle backs. Maher earned a 4-3 decision while Butler secured three straight before falling just shy of the Consolation Semifinals with a 7-3 defeat.

Emmett LiCastri recorded a convincing 10-1 major decision against Pittsburgh's Joe Travato in the 157-pound wrestle backs. Jimmy Stillerman delivered a thrilling 3-1 sudden victory decision win at 174 to open his tournament and finished with a 2-2 overall record after adding a 6-5 decision in the wrestle backs.

Reid Robilotto also earned a win in the consolation bracket, overcoming teammate Gordon Bolig with a 12-6 decision. Corey Kerkesner shut down his opening opponent at 285 with a 5-0 decision but came up short in his next two bouts.

The Diplomats return to dual meet competition on Tuesday, traveling to EIWA opponent Bucknell for a 7:00 p.m. contest.

To: "dawvoice3@gmail.com" <dawvoice3@gmail.com>

January 10, 2017

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's wrestling team gave Bucknell all it could handle in the early going, but a six-bout winning streak from the Bison closed out the contest as the Diplomats fell by a 33-6 score on Tuesday afternoon in Lewisburg.

The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opener dropped F&M to 1-1, 0-1 EIWA on the year, while Bucknell improved to 1-2, 1-1 EIWA.

The Diplomats found themselves trailing by a narrow 7-6 score following the opening four matches. Action began at 125 with F&M's Edgar Garcia hanging tough throughout, but was ultimately undone by a third-period reversal as he fell by a 4-2 score. Dan Martoccio got the Diplomats on the board at 133, securing a 5-3 decision after recording a pair of takedowns to tie the team score at 3-3.

Reigning NCAA Qualifier Tyler Smith came up huge for the Bison with a 14-2 major over Paddy Quinlan to push the advantage to four. However, the Diplomats' Sam Butler rode a 4-0 lead after the first period at 149 to hang on for a key 6-2 decision that pulled F&M within one.

Bucknell seized the momentum back with a 10-0 major at 157 and continued with bonus points in three of the next four bouts, including an opening-period pin at 197 to extend its advantage for good.

F&M returns to competition on Saturday, sending split squads to compete in both a trio of bouts at the Pittsburgh Duals, as well as having grapplers take part in the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Open, hosted by Millersville.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - Coming off a long layover to start the New Year, the Broncs kicked 2017 off strong with a decisive 25-11 victory over EWL foe Clarion University. The Broncs (3-0, 2-0 EWL) rode bonus point victories from the junior middleweight duo of 7th ranked Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) and 14th ranked B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) to the conference victory.

“We try to keep the wrestlers anxious for competition, and they do a pretty good job of that,” said Rider Head Coach Gary Taylor about the win.

Besides Walsh and Clagon, Rider also received victories from sophomore Anthony Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park Regional), freshman 149 Gino Fluri (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional), junior 184 Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, NJ/Franklin), senior 197 Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, DE/Caravel Academy) and redshirt junior heavyweight Mauro Correnti (Delran, NJ/Holy Cross).

The match kicked off at 141, where Clarion sent out its top wrestler in 16th ranked Brock Zacherl. Zacherl won by technical fall, 19-4, over Rider freshman Evan Fidelibus (Easton, PA/Easton Area) to give Clarion the early 5-0 lead.

The Broncs would then go on a run of three-straight victories, with Gino Fluri defeating Jake Keller by a 5-3 score to kick off the run.

Clagon would then wrestle to the tune of a 12-3 major decision to give the Broncs a 7-5 lead that they would never again relinquish.

Walsh fell behind 2-0 early, before countering Evan Delong to win by fall in 4:55 to push the Broncs out to a 13-5 lead. “I felt like I was able to bounce back and keep wrestling to get the victory,” said Walsh.

PITTSBURGH, PAJ.R. Wert (Christianburg, VA/Christianburg), Anthony Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park Regional [South Dakota State]), Evan Fidelibus (Easton, PA/Easton Area), B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) and Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) each won all three of their matches as the Rider University wrestling team (6-0, 2-0 EWL) went 3-0 at the University of Pittsburgh Duals on Saturday. The Broncs began the day with a 39-4 win over Columbia, before defeating West Virginia, 28-6. Rider wrapped up the three-match sweep with a 32-9 win over Brown.

“We wrestled with energy and very aggressive today” said Rider Head Coach Gary Taylor while talking about the day full of dual meets.

The Broncs kicked the day off with a very strong start, winning the first nine matches they wrestled against Columbia wrestlers to open up a 39-0 lead. An early win by Wert at 125 kicked the Rider wrestlers off in the right direction. “Wert wrestled well having just come off knee surgery” said Taylor.

The Broncs would continue on with the wind at their back, taking the first eight matches of their second dual meet against West Virginia University. The Broncs would have the dual completely locked up by 197 pounds, leading 28-0.

The final dual meet of the day would see more success for Rider, kicking off the match against Brown on yet another run, this time winning the first three matches to take a 15-0 lead. They would never look back, going on to take the dual 32-9.

“Cefolo and Walsh beat two top notch kids from WVU,” said Taylor. B.J. responded extremely well from the Midlands tournament and returned to his old form. Fidelibus continues to improve as a true freshman. Ryan Wolfe also wrestled well, with his only loss coming to the #6 ranked kid in the country 5-4.”

The Broncs next action will be on Friday, January 20th when they Broncs play host to the EWL rival Edinboro Scots in Alumni Gymnasium.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Rider University wrestling team (6-1, 2-1 EWL) suffered its first dual meet loss of the season by a 22-10 score to the Edinboro Fighting Scots Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

“We had our chances here tonight” said Coach Taylor about the loss. “There is no excuse. They beat us.”

The Broncs received victories from junior 157 B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), junior 165 Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), and senior 197 Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy).

The match began at 149 pounds, where 11th ranked Patricio Lugo of Edinboro defeated Jesse Rodgers (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) by a 3-1 score to put the Fighting Scots ahead 3-0.

The Broncs would take the next two matches, beginning with 16th ranked Clagon defeating Chase Delande 7-3.

Seventh ranked Chad Walsh would then step into a clash of ranked foes and familiar rivals, facing off against 14th ranked Austin Matthews, who had defeated Walsh by a 17-6 score in the 2016 Eastern Wrestling League finals.

Walsh would fall behind 4-1 early before scoring seven consecutive points to take home the 8-4 victory. “It was definitely a better match tonight. Last year, he pulled away from me so it was hard to come back on him. Tonight, I stayed in the match through the first period and was able to pull away from him after that,” said Walsh.

The Broncs would then suffer losses at 174 and 184, with Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) losing to Ty Schoffstall 12-8, and Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) losing to Dakota Geer, who is ranked 18th nationally, 7-2.

The Broncs would then take home a victory by technical fall at 197, with Wolfe ending the match 15-0 at 2:27, pushing the score to 11-9.

Mauro Correnti (Delran, NJ/Holy Cross) would suffer a 4-1 loss in the second tiebreaker to 11th ranked Billy Miller at heavyweight.

The match would continue down at 125, where J.R. Wert (Christiansburg, VA/Christiansburg) would suffer a 7-2 loss to ninth ranked Sean Russell. At 133 pounds with the score 15-11, Korbin Myers would defeat Sophomore Anthony Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park Regional) by a 4-3 score with riding time proving to be the factor after the second tiebreaker to put the match out of reach, 18-11.

The Broncs would lose a team point during the 141 pound match-up between Evan Fidelibus (Easton, PA/Easton Area) and Nate Hagan of Edinboro for a Control of Mat violation by the Rider bench. Fidelibus would suffer a 9-1 loss to close the dual, 22-10.

The Broncs next match is on Sunday January 22nd, when they play host to Cleveland State in Alumni Gymnasium.

FAIRFAX, VA – Trailing 15-0 after the matches first four bouts, the Rider University wrestling team got five-straight wins, all with bonus points, to defeat George Mason, 24-18, Sunday afternoon. Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) remains second in the nation following his 12th pin, while Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) and Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, DE/Caravel Academy) each won by tech fall. B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) and Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) took major decisions to help the Broncs improve to 9-1 (5-1 EWL).

“We had some people out today in four weight classes, so we were fortunate that our 57, 65, 74, 84 and 97 won and got bonus points in what ended up a 5-5 split,” said Rider Head Coach Gary Taylor. “It was certainly a great team effort to pull this off when we weren’t at 100 percent.”

Battling without its usual starters at 125, 133, 141 and 149, the Broncs dropped the first four bouts, including a forfeit at 141 to give George Mason a 15-0 lead.

But Clagon’s 12-4 major decision over Matt Ramos at 157 got the Broncs scoring started. Walsh then pinned Ryan Frost at 165 at 6:20 to cut the deficit to 15-10. Stinson’s tech fall against Daniel Mika at 174 tied the match at 15-15.

“That certainly took some pressure off of us when Chad got the pin,” said Taylor. “He continues to look pretty devastating with his pinning ability.”

Fagg-Daves pushed the Broncs ahead with a 14-5 major decision against Austin Harrison at 184, before Wolfe scored a 19-3 tech fall over Matt Meadows in 4:30 at 197 to clinch the match.

The Broncs return to action Feb. 9, when they travel to Hofstra. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
