Cal Poly Begins Four-Match Home Stand with Saturday Night Dual Meet Against Grand Canyon
— Cal Poly Wrestling —

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly is down to its final four dual meets of the 2015-16 wrestling season and all four will be inside the Mott Athletics Center.

Grand Canyon University of Phoenix, Arizona, will provide the competition for a non-conference dual Saturday night at 7. The Antelopes are 5-15 on the year, coming off a 20-15 loss at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Sunday.

Then the Mustangs will close out the regular season with three Pac-12 Conference duals, hosting Oregon State on Feb. 5, Arizona State for Homecoming on Feb. 13 and Boise State on Feb. 14.

Cal Poly is 1-7 in duals, dropping a pair of non-conference matches at Northern Colorado and Wyoming last weekend. Lone Mustang to win both of his matches was 157-pounder Colt Shorts as he posted a pair of wins against nationally ranked wrestlers.

Shorts improved to 12-6 on the year with a fall in 6:36 against No. 33 Eleazar De Luca of Northern Colorado and a 5-2 decision over No. 29 Archie Colgan of Wyoming. The junior from Canonsburg, Penn., has won his last four matches and is 7-1 in duals this year.

David Gonzalez at 125 pounds, Colton Schilling at 141 and Mitch Woods at 184 split their two matches, winning against Northern Colorado and falling against Wyoming. Gonzalez is 9-13 with three falls this season while Schilling sports a 9-6 mark with five pins. Woods is 9-12 with two falls.

Only other Mustang in Saturday’s probable lineup with a winning record besides Shorts and Schilling is 197-pounder J.T. Goodwin (13-9), who won his first eight matches of the season and has five falls to his credit.

Joe Granger has a 10-10 mark and could wrestle at 165 against the Antelopes.

Grand Canyon’s five dual wins are against Campbell, Iowa Central Community College, Cornell, Embry-Riddle and The Citadel.

Top Antelope wrestlers are Kenny Moore (13-7) at 174 pounds, Daniel Chaid (9-2) at 285 and Trayton Libolt (11-9) at 125.

Neither team will have a senior in the lineup Saturday. Grand Canyon could use as many as six freshman while Cal Poly has three freshmen in the lineup.

Cal Poly defeated the Antelopes 33-3 a year ago in Phoenix, the first meeting ever between the two schools. Grand Canyon, formerly a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, elevated its athletics program to Division I two years ago.

@PackWrestle Wins Eight Matches and Downs #14 UNC, 28-8NC State wins all four battles of ranked vs. ranked

RALEIGH, N.C. - The #3 NC State wrestling team won all four matches among the ranked vs. ranked bouts, and defeated visiting #14 North Carolina 28-8 Monday night at Dorton Arena. The Wolfpack (18-0, 3-0 ACC) won eight of the 10 matches on the night, and took control early by jumping out to an 11-0 lead after the first three bouts.

The ACC dual featured four different matches where both wrestlers were ranked nationally. The Pack won all four, and all eight NC State wrestlers ranked in this week’s NCAA Coaches Panel rankings won their bout (the top-33 wrestlers at each weight class are ranked from now till the end of the season by the Coaches Panel).

NC State improves to a perfect 18-0 on the season, the second-highest single-season win total in school history, and 3-0 in ACC action. The Pack has outscored its ACC competition 97-24 on the year, winning 23 of the 30 matches with 14 bonus point wins.

The Wolfpack started with back-to-back major decision and then a decision to jump out to the early 11-0 lead after the first three matches.

R-Fr. Sean Fausz had five takedowns and accumulated 5:08 of ride time to earn an 11-3 win at 125 pounds to start the dual. Fellow redshirt-freshman Jamal Morris followed suit with another major decision, as he won 13-3, powered behind five takedowns as well.

#3 Kevin Jack picked up a 5-3 OT win over #11 Joey Ward at 141 pounds. Jack made the comeback possible with riding out Ward the entire third period to erase a ride time point, then in the OT three stalls were called between the two and Jack earned an escape point for the final total.

After a UNC major at 149 pounds, #4 Tommy Gantt responded with 10-4 decision (with 2:12 of ride time) to give NC State a 14-4 lead halfway through the dual.

The Pack scored another decision right after the intermission, when #7 Max Rohskopf picked up a 1-0 win over #10 John Michael Staudenmayer. After the first two periods were scoreless, Rohskopf got an escape and did not let Staudenmayer get a late takedown after he took a shot with about a minute left.

UNC got a second major decision at 174, but #15 Pete Renda came right back and scored an 11-7 win over #17 Alex Utley. Renda scored a quick takedown and a four-point near-fall for a quick 6-0 lead and held on for his fourth win over a ranked foe this year. In the final battle of ranked foes, #17 Michael Boykin scored an 11-6 win over #23 Chip Ness at 197 pounds.

#1 Nick Gwiazdowski closed out the victory with a 19-2 second-period technical fall.

No. 2 Hawkeyes Control No. 11 Nebraska in Lincoln

Hawkeyes win 21-11 to extend conference win streak to 19 duals

LINCOLN, Nebraska -- The second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won seven of 10 matches to defeat 11th-ranked Nebraska, 21-11, on Sunday afternoon in front of a school-record crowd of 3,952 at the Devaney Sports Complex.

Iowa improved to 13-0, 7-0 in the Big Ten and extended its conference win streak to 19. Iowa has won 17 straight Big Ten road duals.

Eight of Sunday’s 10 bouts pitted one ranked wrestler against another, and Iowa came out on top in seven of those eight matches.

Second-ranked Thomas Gilman opened the dual with an 11-4 win over No. 9 Tim Lambert at 125, and seventh-ranked Sam Stoll closed the dual with a 6-2 win against No. 18 Colin Jensen at 285.

Iowa’s five other wins were decided by two points or less.

“We want to win every match and we want it to be lopsided,” said UI head coach Tom Brands. “We left a lot of points out here, but they’re probably thinking the same thing. Today’s dual was probably a little more exciting than I would have liked.”

Third-ranked Cory Clark (133) and 12th-ranked Alex Meyer (174) won by identical 2-0 scores. Both wrestlers escaped in the second period and rode the length of the third period to earn a point for riding time. Clark topped No. 14 Eric Montoya to post his second consecutive shutout, while Meyer defeated No. 16 Micah Barnes to improve to 4-2 against ranked opponents.

Second-ranked Brandon Sorensen won a top-five matchup for the fourth time this season. Sorensen scored a takedown in the final minute of the first period and the opening minute of the third to defeat fifth-ranked Jake Sueflohn, 6-5, at 149 pounds.

Edwin Cooper, Jr. followed with his second win in a row against a ranked opponent at 157. Cooper scored a four-point move in the opening period and held on for a 7-6 win.

Nathan Burak extended his win streak to 16 with a 4-2 win at 197. Burak scored a takedown with 1:10 left in the first and added 1:12 of riding time to defeat No. 15 Aaron Studebaker.

The Huskers (9-4, 3-4) got on the board with decisions at 141 and 165 pounds, and won by fall at 184 pounds. Nebraska was deducted one team point following the 157-pound match for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Iowa returns to the mat Friday hosting Minnesota at 8 p.m. (CT) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for youth 18-years and younger. UI students and children five-years and younger are admitted free. Tickets are available at the UI Ticket Office over the phone at 800-IA-HAWKS and online at hawkeyesports.com.

NOTES: Attendance was 3,952, a Nebraska home attendance record… Hawkeyes are 7-0 in the Big Ten for the sixth time under Tom Brands… Iowa’s returning All-Americans improved to 68-1… Gilman improved to 17-0… Burak has won a career-best 17 straight matches… Burak and Gilman extended their career bests winning streaks.

Cowboys Dominate No. 16 Cyclones, 38-3

STILLWATER – No. 5 Oklahoma State wrestling defeated No. 16 Iowa State on Sunday afternoon, 38-3, making it the Pokes’ largest win margin over the Cyclones since a 34-0 shutout in 1949.

The Cowboys improve to 9-2 on the season and have six wins over top-25 opponents.

"I think the team that Iowa State put out on the mat is young and developing and you hope to see a score like that against a team like this,” John Smith said. “It's easy to say and hard to do, but we did it tonight. As you saw today, we struggled a little bit offensively. Not because of effort, but they stayed in good position and were grabbing wrists to slow it down. That's not our style and I don't know if it's their style. Maybe they were outmatched and that's the way to keep the score down, but we need to continue to focus on our offense.”

Once again, No. 5 Eddie Klimara opened the dual with a win, defeating Kyle Larson with a 15-0 technical fall. With his first takedown coming midway through the first period, Klimara exposed the Cyclone wrestler for two sets of nearfall points to lead 10-0. Two more takedowns and an escape ended the match in 3:13.

“I just wanted to come out here and prove to myself that all the work that I have been doing would pay off,” Klimara said. “I wanted to go out there and put up points. Tonight, all the moves I did, I hit. I was on attack on my offense, and it felt nice to get out there and score.”

Gary Wayne Harding gave the crowd an exciting match at 133 pounds against No. 9 Earl Hall. Harding went down 4-2 after two Cyclone takedowns in the first period. Another Hall takedown in the second period gave him a 6-3 advantage over Harding, but a late takedown from the Cowboy tied up the match at 6-6 going into the final period. Harding rode Hall until the three seconds remained on the clock, giving Hall a 7-6 win and Harding just 59 seconds of riding time.

The 141-pound bout started slow, but No. 1 Dean Heil put the first points on the board in the second period with a reversal over Nathan Boston. He separated the score with a takedown late in the third period and picked up a riding time point for a 5-0 win.

At 149 pounds, Anthony Collica’s hand was raised just eight seconds into the match as No. 20 Gabe Moreno suffered a shoulder injury, giving the Pokes six team points.

Joe Smith rounded out his home debut with another win, defeating Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer. Smith earned three takedowns in the match for a 10-2 major decision. Smith now holds a 26-2 record for the year.

Alex Dieringer followed up Smith’s performance with another major decision win at 165 pounds. Top-ranked Dieringer faced No. 10 Tanner Weatherman, who he scored four takedowns on as well as a four-point nearfall. The win extends Dieringer’s win streak to 68, putting him just six wins away from matching OSU legend Mike Sheet’s win streak.

“Every time I have had a loss, or a bad match like Friday night, I’ve always gotten better from it,” Dieringer said. “It really eats me inside when I don’t get bonus points for the team or for myself, so I think not being complacent is the only way to get better.”

Kyle Crutchmer redeemed a 3-1 loss from earlier this weekend when he defeated Lelund Weatherspoon with a 5-2 decision. The No. 3 Cowboy got two first-period takedowns and a quick escape in the third to give him his 17th win of the season.

Nolan Boyd notched his second win of the weekend after a big upset over Mizzou’s fourth-ranked Willie Miklus. Boyd face Dane Prestano at 184 pounds, where the first period ended scoreless. Boyd scored a reversal to start the second period and open scoring. He later scored a takedown in the period and a full-period ride in the third for a 5-2 win.

Preston Weigel earned his first dual win on Sunday afternoon in style, taking down Marcus Harrington with a 10-0 major decision. Weigel scored a takedown in the first period and picked up two sets of back points. In the second period, he earned an escape and notched another takedown to seal the win.

At heavyweight, Austin Marsden tallied his second bonus-point win of the weekend with a fall over Quean Smith in 3:39. The Cowboy senior led the Cyclone 12-0 before the stick. He improves to 18-1 on the season.

The Pokes will take a week off from competition but will return to the mat on Feb. 5 to take on Oklahoma inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Mike Basford / basford.16@osu.edu WR: No. 9 Buckeyes Cruise Past Michigan State, 33-9Ohio State wins eight of 10 matches, five via bonus points

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A trio of local products – Nathan Tomasello, Johnni DiJulius and Nick Tavanello – notched victories for Ohio State as the ninth-ranked Buckeyes rolled to a 33-9 victory over Michigan State on Sunday in front of a standing-room only crowd at Walsh Jesuit High School.

THE SHORT STORY
Ohio State (7-2, 4-1) won eight of 10 matches, including five via bonus points. Tomasello and DiJulius, both Cleveland natives, started things out with back-to-back wins and then Hunter Stieber, Jake Ryan and Bo Jordan all joined the winners circle to give the Buckeyes a commanding 21-6 edge. Myles Martin, Kenny Courts and Tavanello rounded things out with a technical fall, decision and major decision, respectively.

A HOMECOMING AT 125 AND 133
Tomasello (13-0) extended his winning streak to 31 straight matches with a 21-6 technical fall at 125 pounds to start off the afternoon. Wrestling less than a mile from his high school alma mater – Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy – Tomasello was never seriously threatened, getting three takedowns in the first period, two in the second (along with a pair of two-point near falls) and three more in the third period. It was his 20th win via bonus points over the last 31 matches.

Returning to the same gymnasium where we etched his name in the Walsh Jesuit history books, DiJulius gutted out a hard-fought 5-2 decision over Garth Yenter at 133 lbs. DiJulius (12-3) made one takedown in the first period and a reversal in the second period while along racking up over a minute of riding time. The win gave Ohio State an early 8-0 lead.

While wrestling for the Warriors, DiJulius was a four-time state finalist and three-time champion.

STIEBER PICKS UP FIRST WIN
Hunter Stieber, who made his return to the starting lineup two weeks ago vs. Michigan and missed last week’s dual vs. Nebraska, was victorious at 149 pounds with a 14-5 major decision. He was on the offensive early and often, getting three first period takedowns for a 6-2 lead, and then extended that into the second period and led 11-3 entering the final 2:00. It was Stieber’s 86th career victory and first since last year’s Big Ten Championships.

BUCKEYES WIN THE NEXT FOUR
Ohio State went four-for-four at 157, 165, 174 and 184 pounds, highlighted by a pin from Bo Jordan in 5:58 that gave the Buckeyes a 29-6 advantage. Jake Ryan moved to 13-1 on the season with a 10-6 decision over Mark Bozzo that was essentially locked up when Ryan got three first period takedowns and a reversal to start the second.

Jordan’s pin was his fourth of the year and came with 1:02 remaining the third period. He remained unbeaten (10-0) and has won seven of his 10 matches this year via bonus points. Not to be outdone, Myles Martin followed at 174 with a 19-4 technical that was clinched late in the third period on a two-point near fall. Along the way, Martin racked up six takedowns and two two-point near falls. He is 21-3 this year (3-1 in duals) with eight technical falls (second most on the team).

Kenny Courts’ 10-3 decision at 184 improved gave him a 12-6 record on the year and was highlighted by a six-point first period – one takedown and a four-point near fall. The 2015 All-American also had two escapes and a third-period takedown.

TAVANELLO CLOSES THINGS OUT
Nick Tavanello, a graduate of nearby Wadsworth High School, opened up a close match at 285 against Dimitrius Renfroe with eight third period points on two takedowns and a four-point near fall to get the fifth bonus point win of the afternoon, 13-1. Tavanello improved his 2015-16 record to 14-3 overall (5-2 duals, 2-1 Big Ten).

UP NEXT
Winners of two in a row, Ohio State hits the road next weekend for duals at No. 21 Indiana (Friday, 7 p.m.) and No. 20 Purdue (Sunday, 1 p.m.)

PHILADELPHIA – Lorenzo Thomas joined an elite group of wrestlers at the University of Pennsylvania, picking up his 100th career win as the Quakers defeated Binghamton, 24-9, in an EIWA dual at The Palestra.

Thomas scored an 8-1 decision over Steven Schneider at 184 pounds to become the 11th Penn wrestler to win 100 matches during his career. Thomas is the first Quakers to reach the 100-win mark while competing mostly at 184 pounds.

After a scoreless first period, Thomas scored an escape and a takedown in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. In the third, he added four points of nearfall and almost 3:00 of riding time to reach the century mark.

The win from Thomas was one of seven in the dual meet for the Quakers who won their third consecutive dual meet to improve to 3-1 overall.

No. 17 Casey Kent improved to 17-4 this season with a 4-0 decision over Jack McKeever. An early takedown in the first period and over 2:00 of riding time from that score were the big difference in the win for Kent.

After the two teams split wins to start the dual, Penn won six straight bouts to take a commanding 24-3 lead. Marc Mastropietro started the run with a 5-1 win in sudden victory over Dylan Caruana. Mastropietro countered a Caruana shot with an upper body takedown and then added a pair of nearfall points for his second overtime win in as many matches.

After a forfeit win for C.J. Cobb at 149 pounds, No. 18 May Bethea defeated Vincent DePrez, 9-6. Bethea had four takedowns in the win. Including two in the second period which helped overcome a first period deficit.

Brooks Martino bumped up to 165 pounds with usual starter Ray Bethea out with injury. His bump was rewarded with a 6-3 decision over Anthony DePrez. Martino trailed, 3-1, midway through the match but scored a takedown before the end of the second period and another in the third for the win.

Binghamton won the final two matches, including an overtime win from Mark Tracy over freshman Robert Ng at 197 pounds. Ng had the lead after a takedown in the second period, but a rally from Tracy in the third gave him a late lead. Ng forced overtime when Tracy was called for stalling a second time with 0:16 left in regulation, but a takedown 25 seconds into overtime was the difference in a 7-5 win for Tracy. Connor Calkins snuck out a 4-3 decision over Patrik Garren with a takedown in the final 10 seconds at heavyweight to close the dual.

Penn begins Ivy League duals on January 30 at Princeton at 4 p.m. on January 31, Penn hosts Rider in The Palestra at 12 p.m.

For Rider (6-8, 2-2 EWL) sophomore Chad Walsh(Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) won by fall to give Rider a 9-3 lead. “Chad is wrestling extremely well,” Taylor said.

Walsh is ranked 15th in the nation and improved to 17-5 on the season, 4-0 in EWL duals. “Chad beat a tough kid today so he had a big weekend,” Taylor said, “defeating two very good wrestlers.”

Sophomore B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), senior Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea), freshman Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, NJ/Franklin), junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) and senior Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) also won.

“Deutsch did a nice job,” Taylor said. “He has looked very good since coming back from his injury. B.J. is fighting through his comeback and found a way to win today in a tough match. That’s a good corner to turn.”

Delia won for the fourth time this year and the 55th of his career. “Curt stepped up,” Taylor said. Delia was replacing the injured senior Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) who is ranked eighth in the nation. “He did a nice job.”

Rider hosts Bloomsburg Friday at 7pm. “We’ve been on the road a lot, to Midlands, to Virginia Duals, out here, it will be good to be home,” Taylor said. “With the students back it will be good to be in our home gym.”

Gophers Complete B1G Comeback in Win over Purdue
After falling behind by 12 points, Minnesota rattled off five consecutive wins to turn a possible loss into a five-point victory

Four matches into Sunday’s dual between No. 17 Minnesota and Purdue, both the momentum and the scoreboard had swung completely into the Boilermakers’ favor. The visitors had won three consecutive matches – all with bonus points – and led 15-3 heading to 197 pounds. A major decision by No. 4 Brett Pfarr gave the home crowd and the Gophers a bit of life going into halftime, a spark that caught and turned to a roaring fire when Ben Morgan picked up a pin at 133 pounds in his career debut Those two wins were key in a five-match winning streak that ultimately helped the Gophers down the Boilers, 23-18.

“[Today’s result] was great. I think it was a great statement to the guys, being down and coming back. That’s what athletics is about,” said head coach J Robinson. “I told the guys at halftime, tough periods don’t make character, what they do is reveal it. I think those five guys came out and did what they had to do to win. That’s what Minnesota wrestling is about, finding a way to win.”

Though Pfarr may have started the rally for the Gophers, Morgan’s pin was undoubtedly the showstopper, igniting the crowd of 3,136 in a towering cheer. His match with Luke Welch was scoreless midway through the first period when a single-leg shot appeared like it would yield a takedown for Welch. Along the edge of the mat, Morgan went to his own back and kicked his opponent over the top, flipping Welch to his back and earning the fall at 1:29.

While Morgan’s pin did something special for the team by finishing the comeback and putting Minnesota on top for the first time since the night’s opening match, it also meant something very special for him on a personal level.

“My family, my dad and uncle, both wrestled here in college and both coached after so I’ve been coming to these meets since I was a little kid,” said Morgan. “Getting the pin and getting our team back, it’s really a dream come true … my life’s really come up to this moment, to this year. It couldn’t be a better feeling.”

Morgan’s win was the third in a run of five straight for Minnesota. That rally began with Pfarr setting a new career-high in points scored in his 25-11 major decision over Drake Stein heading into the intermission. Pfarr had set his previous high (23) in last Sunday’s contest against Rutgers.

Following the intermission, No. 9 Michael Kroells added another major decision to the Gophers’ score with a 10-2 victory over Tyler Kral. The win was the second major for Kroells’ in his last four Big Ten duals and pulled the Gophers to within four points heading to the other end of the weight spectrum at 125 pounds.

After a one-match absence from the starting lineup, Steve Polakowski returned for the Gophers and picked up his second conference win of the season, a 9-3 decision over Ben Thorton. That win inched Minnesota to within one, 15-14, heading into Morgan’s match at 133 pounds.

With the applause and cheers from Morgan’s pin still reverberating through the Sports Pavilion, No. 8 Tommy Thorn clinched the dual for Minnesota with an 8-4 decision over Danny Sabatello. Not only was the match the fifth straight win for the Gophers, it capped a run of 20 consecutive team points that flipped a 15-3 gap into a 23-15 lead and an assured victory going into the night’s final contest.

While the win was exactly what Minnesota had hoped to produce on Sunday afternoon, the dual did not begin as the Gophers planned. After a 5-4 decision for Brandon Kingsley at 157 pounds, a victory decided by the riding time point, Minnesota grapplers fell in three consecutive matches. Brad Dolezal, wrestling up a weight in his season debut, lost 11-0 to No. 7 Chad Welch at 165. Nick Wanzek fell to Jacob Morissey 18-2 at 174 before Will Balow was pinned at 184 pounds in his career debut. Those three wins accounted for all of Purdue’s points until an overtime victory for Alex Griffin over No. 9 Jake Short in the afternoon’s final match.

Full match-by-match results are available at: z.umn.edu/wrpur

Minnesota will now wrap up its Big Ten season with four road duals over the next three weekends, beginning this Friday in Iowa City when Minnesota takes on No. 2 Iowa in college wrestling’s greatest rivalry. That match will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network beginning at 8 p.m. Central.

KENT, Ohio -- The Old Dominion wrestling team (4-8, 0-3 MAC) fell to Kent State, 25-13, on the road Sunday afternoon in Kent, Ohio. The Golden Flashes picked up a fall at 285 to secure the MAC dual meet victory over ODU.

Brandon Jeske improved his winning streak to seven with a dominant 11-1 major decision over Kent State's Del Vinas to begin the dual meet. FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

@IlliniWrestling Falls to No. 1 Penn State 30-15

Penn State’s Nolf Snaps Martinez’s Streak

CHAMPAIGN, ILL.— In one of the most anticipated matches of the Big Ten season, top-ranked Penn State showed why they remain the favorite to win a Big Ten and NCAA Title. Cael Sanderson’s squad used three pins, two over ranked opponents, to defeat the Orange and Blue 30-15 in front of a season-high crowd of 1407. In defeat, the Illini saw undefeated wrestlers Isaiah Martinez and Zac Brunson have their streaks snapped this afternoon.

“I think at 157, that guy was ready to answer the bell and he did,” said Head Coach Jim Heffernan. “I guess he’s no longer undefeated, but if that’s the worst thing that happens to him in his career, that’s okay. Brunson, he was in on a shot with less than 15 seconds to go, theoretically to win the match if he finishes, almost finishes, gives up a takedown, and ends up on his back. You can’t let that happen. {We had} two number ones get beat, two number ones got pinned, we lost by 15 points. If our two studs aren’t going to win, we aren’t going to win very many matches.”

The Illini and Nittany Lions started the match at 141 pounds, where Mousa Jodeh stepped in for an injured Brock Ervin. Jodeh fought tough through the first two periods, surrendering just one takedown, but trailed 2-1 entering the third period. However, in the third period #16 Jimmy Gulibon netted four points with an escape, a takedown, and a final point for riding time to open the dual with a 6-1 victory.

At 149 pounds, Kyle Langenderfer had his work cut out for him, as he opposed No.2 Zain Retherford. Retherford started fast with a takedown to grab an early, and then clamped down on Langenderfer to get a 2:10 pin. The victory moved Retherford to a perfect 20-0, while giving Penn State a 9-0 lead after two matches.

The matchup headliner this afternoon came at 157 pounds where Isaiah Martinez put his 54 consecutive wins on the line against undefeated red-shirt freshman Jason Nolf. Nolf and Martinez battled each other through the first period, both grapplers netting a takedown and an escape. Nolf regained the lead with an escape to start the second period. As the second period entered its final 30 seconds, Nolf gained the advantage again and earned a takedown to put Martinez in a compromising position. Nolf held his ground for the full count for his tenth pin of the season.

“It was first match I've lost in two years,” said Martinez. “It doesn’t feel good to lose but I'm not making any excuses. Next time I’ll be better. I was rolling around too much. That’s probably where I messed up.”

For Martinez, it was his first loss since his first season on campus when re redshirted. The streak spanned 61 matches, 54 since the start of last season, and ended a run of 18 straight wins against ranked opponents. The streak that began 750 days ago saw Martinez win 48 of his 61 matches by major decision or greater, including 26 by technical fall. Last season, Martinez became the first freshman to go undefeated since current Penn State Head Coach Cael Sanderson went undefeated in 1999 and finished his career a perfect 159-0.

“I’m not thinking about the streak as much. It hurts to lose,” explained Martinez. “It doesn’t feel good. The streak aside, it’s not about that. It's about the loss and how I can get better. The main goal is to win a national championship at the NCAAs and that’s what we focus on. I'd have liked to have won all the matches, but that’s where it matters. I keep a good perspective. I’ve been wrestling 18 years, so I’ve lost. It just hasn’t happened in awhile.”

With Illinois facing a 15-0 deficit, senior Steven Rodrigues showed resolve by overcoming the situation and getting the Illini on the board. Shakur Rasheed jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead with a takedown and near fall, but Rodrigues cut the lead 7-3 by the end of the first period. Rodrigues doubled his points in period two while not giving ground to the Nittany Lion, setting up a decisive third period. Rasheed extended his lead to 8-6 with an escape, but two takedowns by Rodrigues was too much for Rasheed, beating him 10-9.

“I just have to get off to a fast start,” said Rodrigues. “I’ve always had a good gas tank. I know I can win nationals this year, if I don’t give up early points, and then I can build my leads. I knew that he was done after that first exchange and I just needed to push the pace even harder and get off to my attacks.”

With Illinois on the scoreboard, the Fighting Illini turned to #1 Zac Brunson to continue the momentum against No.2 Bo Nickal. Brunson started out strong with a takedown, but Nickal used two escapes and a takedown to lead 4-3 entering the third frame. Brunson fought his way to an escape that knotted the score back up at 4-4, but Nickal responded again with a takedown in the corner of the mat. Similar to Martinez, the takedown left Brunson under full control of Nickal where the freshman pinned the Illini with just 11 seconds remaining in the bout. The loss was Brunson’s first of the season after the Illini pins leader had won 14 straight, but had only wrestled once prior today since winning the Reno Tournament on December 20.

Trailing 21-3, Jeff Koepke got Illinois back in the right direction with a strong performance against No. 12 Matt McCutcheon. After McCutcheon started the scoring with a takedown, Koepke got an escape in the first period and added another to start the second frame. With the score tied 2-2, Koepke locked his arms around one of McCutcheon’s legs and used his other leg to drop the Nittany Lion to the mat. Upon earning the takedown, and taking a 4-2 lead, an injury timeout was given to Penn State. After a minute and a half, McCutcheon was deemed unable to continue, giving the Illini a six-point victory.

At 197, Penn State featured the top-ranked wrestler Morgan McIntosh against Illinois’ Andre Lee. Lee held McIntosh within reach through the first period, but three takedowns from McIntosh proved to be too much for the Illini red-shirt freshman as McIntosh won 14-3, stretching Penn State’s lead out to 25-9.

Brooks Black earned is third win in Big Ten dual play this afternoon Jan Johnson of Penn State. Black started the scoring with a first-period takedown and led for the full seven minutes while racking up more than two minutes of riding time, as he defeated the Penn State true-freshman 6-2.

With the lead trimmed to 25-12, No. 4 Nico Megalucis stretched it back out to it’s largest of the day with a five-point technical fall over Francis Edelen of Illinois. Although Edelen held Megalucis in check through the first three minutes, Megalucis bounded back by scoring 22 points over the next 3:45 to win 24-9.

The Orange and Blue wrapped up the afternoon on a high note with Zane Richards keeping his perfect record in tact. Once again facing a top-10 wrestler, Richards secured his fourth win over a ranked opponent, all during Big Ten play. Richards used two takedowns in the first period to gain a 4-1 advantage and maintained it for all seven minutes, netting a point for riding time, to win 8-2.

Coach Heffernan and the Fighting Illini will have a week off to regroup before traveling to Madison, Wisconsin where they will battle the Badgers at 1 p.m. on January 31.

College Wrestling

Edinboro University 18, Rider University 15

EDINBORO, PA—The Broncs won five of the 10 bouts but it was not enough to defeat 19th ranked Edinboro in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet Saturday.

“Hopefully in another week or so we’ll be back to full strength,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.

Edinboro (7-6, 5-0 EWL), the defending EWL Champion, jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a tech fall, the deciding points in the match.

In battles of nationally ranked wrestlers, Rider sophomore Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), ranked 13th, defeated Edinboro’s Austin Matthews, ranked eighth, 15-11. “Chad looked really good today,” Taylor said. “Chad set a great pace and he keeps getting better.”

Edinboro’s Patricio Lugo, ranked 12th, defeated Rider sophomore B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), ranked 17th, 8-6. “B.J. lost to an outstanding freshman,” Taylor said. “He has to get through the mental toughness coming back from an injury.”

Also for Rider (5-8, 1-2 EWL) senior Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) won at 133 to cut the Edinboro lead to 5-3 and junior Paul Kirchner (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) won at 141 for a 6-5 Rider lead. “They both did a nice job today,” Taylor said. “Paulie got off to a good start. Deutsch wrestled well again. He has been wrestling well since he got back.”

Junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) won at 197 to cut the Edinboro lead to 18-12 and sophomore Mauro Correnti (Delran, N.J./Holy Cross) won at heavyweight over the 19th ranked wrestler for the final score. “Mauro did a great job,” Taylor said. “He’s starting to learn better positioning. Wolfe got the job done.”

Edinboro defeated Rider 20-16 last year, with each team winning five bouts. “We’re getting closer,” Taylor said. “If we were at full strength today we might have pulled it out, although Curt (Delia, filling in for 14th ranked Conor Brennan) did a good job today.”

Rider travels to Cleveland State for an EWL dual meet Sunday. “Cleveland State just had a good win over Clarion,” Taylor said. “All the EWL teams are tough. You have to show up and be ready in this league.”

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Brown University wrestling held a 15-8 lead through six bouts, but Bucknell University captured the dual meet’s final four bots to gain a 27-15 victory in an EIWA dual on Saturday afternoon at Davis Gym.

The Bears (2-6, 2-4 EIWA) took three straight bouts in the 149, 157, and 165-pound divisions before the host Bison (6-4, 2-1 EIWA) swept the match’s final four bouts. Officials postponed Brown’s dual at Bloomsburg University, scheduled for 4:30 p.m., due to weather concerns with no make-up date announced.

Sophomore Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) paced the Bears with his team-leading seventh fall of the year while juniors Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) and Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) along with freshman Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) each picked up a win via decision.

At 133 lbs., Salvo gave Brown a 6-4 lead with a pin in 2:25 over Bucknell’s Grim Gonzalez, finishing the bout before the first period’s bell.

Galiardo began Brown’s three-bout win streak with a 5-2 triumph at 149 lbs. vs. Victor Lopez. After a scoreless first period, he tallied a pair of takedowns in the second and added an escape in the third.

Staudenmayer continued the run with a 4-0 win at 157 lbs. against the Bison’s Zach Kelly. He posted an escape and a takedown in the second stanza and tacked on a point for riding time.

Viruet earned the visitors’ last win of the meet with a 6-2 decision over Robert Schlitt at 165 lbs. Trailing 1-0 entering the third period, he tallied all of his points in the final frame with two takedowns, an escape, and a riding time point.

Next, Brown hosts Penn on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. and Princeton on Sunday, Feb. 7 at noon in its first home duals of the season over the team’s Alumni Weekend.

ATHENS, Ohio – With "Snowmaggedon 2016" approaching eastern Ohio, the Northern Illinois University wrestling team had its dual matchup with No. 23 Ohio moved up two hours on Fridayevening. The weather outside was cold, but the Huskies got off to a hot start to lead 7-3 before eventually dropping to a 23-10 final defeat in the dual against the nationally ranked Bobcats.

The Huskies (5-6, 0-3 MAC) were unable to ride the early momentum as the Bobcats (7-3, 2-3 MAC) won five consecutive matches in the middle of the dual to erase NIU’s early lead. No. 15 Steve Bleise (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) at 141 pounds won by decision at 141 pounds and Gabe Morse (Alto, Mich./Lowell) followed with a major decision at 149 to give the Huskies their early advantage. But NIU waited until heavyweight for its next win, with Arthur Bunce (Munith, Mich./Dansville) posting an impressive 2-0 victory.

NIU wrestling head coach Ryan Ludwig was pleased with Bunce and the other victorious Huskies, but was disappointed in the results of some other matches that could’ve went NIU’s way and swung the dual in the favor of the Huskies.

“We’re looking for better execution. We had opportunities to win matches that we dropped,” Ludwig said afterwards. “Arthur Bunce did have a very nice performance and a hard-fought win. He was certainly ready to win. We’ll be back working hard now in preparation for Eastern Michigan.”

NIU will face another ranked opponent in conference play for the fourth time this season when the Huskies travel to Eastern Michigan next Friday for a dual matchup set to start at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT in Ypsilanti.
