Wrestling Edged by Binghamton on Spirit Night, 16-15

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel wrestling team fell to Binghamton by a score of 16-15 on Spirit Night at the DAC on Friday night. The Dragons secured victories in five of the ten matches, but it was not enough to overcome the Bearcats.

Drexel jumped out to an early 9-0 advantage after the first three matches. Zack Fuentes started things off for the Dragons with a strong 7-2 decision at 125. David Pearce followed at 133 by edging Binghamton's Jacob Nicholson by a score of 5-4. Pearce and Nicholson were tied at 4-4 as time expired in regulation, but riding time gave Pearce the advantage and ultimately the win.

141 was another close match as Kevin Devoy Jr. and Dylan Caruana remained scoreless deep into the second period. After Caruana was awarded one point for an escape, Devoy took the lead with a reversal that put him ahead 2-1. A late escape from Binghamton knotted the score up at 2-2, but Devoy's control of riding time earned him a 3-2 victory and gave the Dragons a 9-0 lead.

The Bearcats got on the board in the 149 match after a tough battle as Frankie Garcia handed No. 13 Matthew Cimato his first dual loss of the season with a 2-0 sudden victory decision. Binghamton would then cut Drexel's lead to 9-7 as Vincent DePrez took a 14-5 major decision from Ryan O'Connor at 157.

With the Bearcats trailing by just two, Austin Rose came up for the Dragons at 165 and extended Drexel's advantage to 12-7 with a 7-3 decision over Anthony DePrez. However, Binghamton's Jack McKeever would bring the Bearcats within two again in the next match with a 2-1 decision over Nick Elmer at 174.

With just three matches to go, Stephen Loiseau was put up against No. 17 Steve Schneider and despite keeping the match close throughout, Loiseau would ultimately drop a 3-0 decision to give the Bearcats their first lead of the night, 13-12. Nezar Haddad came out strong for Drexel at 197, but was defeated, 12-8, by Binghamton's Mark Tracy which gave the Bearcats a 16-12 advantage with just one match remaining. Joey Goodhart was able to pick up a 1-0 decision in the heavyweight match, but it was not enough as Binghamton edged the Dragons by a total team score of 16-15.

With the loss, the Dragons move to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in EIWA action while Binghamton improves to 7-4, 4-2 EIWA.

Drexel Wrestling returns to action on Sunday as it will host Army West Point at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The conference dual between the Dragons and the Black Knights will now begin at 3:30 p.m. as it was rescheduled due to inclement weather.

REELEY, Colo.– The Northern Colorado Bears snapped their three-dual losing streak on Friday night, defeating the Cal Poly Mustangs 22-9.

"I think we made huge advancements from last week," head coach Troy Nickersonsaid. "We're definitely moving in the right direction. For Tanner Davis to go out and get the win like he did for us is huge; I think it really shifted the momentum of the dual in our favor and got us back on track."

The Bears won six of the ten matches, with the dual decision coming at heavyweight after a 19-19 tie up in team points following the 197 pound match.

True freshman Rico Montoya picked up bonus points early for the Bears to put them in the lead, earning a technical fall over Jason DelaCruz, 17-0. Montoya picked up a takedown 17 seconds into the match, and continued his domination, picking up a four-point nearfall a minute later. Starting in the offensive position to start the second, Montoya tacked on another six points, earning a nearfall eleven seconds in, and another four to close out the period. A quick escape and a takedown set Montoya up for the tech fall, and he secured it with just a minute to go in the match with yet another 4-point nearfall.

Timmy Box earned his third straight dual win on the season, taking down Joshy Cortez, 7-4. Box earned two takedowns in the first period and would add another in the second following a quick escape after choosing the down position. His win closed the team score gap, making it 9-8 in Cal Poly's favor going into the fifth match of the night.

Redshirt sophomore Keilan Torres got his first win as an attached Bear wrestler and first dual win of his career after a 10-0 major decision win over Xavier Johnson. Torres got his first takedown of the match nearly a minute and a half in, and would secure a four-point nearfall 45 seconds later to make it 6-0 in his favor. Choosing down to start the second period, his lead would increase by one following an escape after just five seconds. Another takedown near the end of the second would make it 9-0, and after a non-scoring third period and a plus one for riding time, Torres would tack on four points to the overall team score, making it 15-12, Mustangs.

Tanner Davis followed suit at 174 pounds, also earning the first dual win of his career after a hard fought match against Sohrab Movahedi. Davis picked up two takedowns in the first period, adding an escape point in the second to make it 5-1 going into the final period. Movahedi earned his own escape and takedown to kick off the third, and another takedown after Davis' escape to tie the match at six points apiece. A quick escape for Davis with only eleven seconds to go in the match, as well as a riding time advantage point, would make it 8-6, giving the Bears another three team points to tie the dual at 15-15.

Following a major decision loss at 184 pounds, Trent Noon made up the ground to earn the major for the Bears, defeating J.T. Goodwin 10-1. Noon was the lone scorer of the match for the first t six minutes, only giving up an escape with 42 seconds left in the third period. He earned three takedowns, an escape, and a four-point nearfall throughout the match to secure the win and leave the dual tied 19-19, handing the reigns to UNC heavyweight Brian Macchione.

In only his second match of the season, Macchione put up a massive fight to earn a win for the team. A takedown with 30 seconds left in the first period put him up 2-0, and a second stall call on his opponent, Spencer Empey in the second period left it 3-0 going into the final two minutes of the match. After picking up the riding time advantage, and an escape with 13 seconds to go in the third, Macchione secured his own decision win 6-3, as well as the dual win for the UNC squad, 22-19.

"Brian is a very savvy, very smart wrestler. He knows what ever situation is – in the first period he gave up the stall call instead of the escape – that's him being mat savvy. He's a real student of the sport and he finds ways to win – he finds a way to be our hero, and he did that tonight."

The Bears have the rest of the weekend off, and will take to the road next week for a pair of duals against Boise State and Oregon State.

Jake Gunning extended the UB lead to 13-6 with a dominant 14-3 major decision over Andrew Snyder. Gunning continued to wrestle well, winning his fourth match in his last five duals, including a major decision, a tech fall and a pin.

The Bulls caught a break when Old Dominion's Emilion Saavedra, ranked 13th in the nation, was injured in warm ups and had to forfeit his match to Bryan Lantry. It gave six points to the Bulls and extended their lead to 19-9.

The Monarchs won the final two matches of the evening, but it wasn't enough as the Bulls held on for the four-point victory.

GREELEY, Colo. — Falls by Colton Schilling and Colt Shorts were not enough as Cal Poly fell to Northern Colorado 22-19 in a non-conference dual wrestling meet Friday night in Bank of Colorado Arena.

Coach Brendan Buckley’s Mustangs built a 15-8 lead by winning three of the first five bouts, including the falls by Schilling and Shorts, but the host Bears rallied for a 19-19 tie heading into the final bout.

Northern Colorado heavyweight Brian Macchione earned a 6-3 decision over Spencer Empey to snap the deadlock and improve the Bears’ dual meet record to 2-4. Cal Poly lost its fifth straight dual, falling to 1-6 on the year.

Cal Poly freshman David Gonzalez (9-12) opened the dual meet with a 2-0 decision over Jesse Reed at 125 pounds, scoring an escape in the second period and riding time in the final period.

Schilling (9-5) pinned Colton Orrino in 6 minutes, 21 seconds at 141 pounds after building n 8-3 lead with three takedowns, an escape and a penalty point.

Shorts gave the Mustangs their 15-8 advantage with his fall in 6 minutes, 36 seconds over Eleazar De Luca at 157 pounds. Now 11-6 for the season, Shorts scored two takedowns in the final period for a 5-2 lead before pinning De Luca.

Mitch Woods (9-11) earned his third straight win with a 10-2 major decision over Thomas Chisholm at 184, giving Cal Poly a 19-15 lead with two bouts to go. After a scoreless first period, Woods accumulated three takedowns, an escape, two penalty points and riding time for his first major of the year.

Northern Colorado won the final two bouts to clinch the dual meet victory.

Mustang 197-pounder J.T. Goodwin, who won his first eight matches of the year, four by fall, is now 13-8 for the season after dropping a 10-1 major decision and Empey couldn’t recover from a 3-0 deficit in the final period in his 6-3 loss to Macchione.

The Bears, who edged Cal Poly 23-22 in an outdoor dual meet a year ago in San Luis Obispo, now lead the all-time series 3-1.

No. 4 @MizzouWrestling Falls to No. 5 Oklahoma State
Mayes stays undefeated, Cox and Butler grab wins

STILLWATER, Okla. – In a dual which featured ranked wrestlers in 17 of the 20 weight classes, Mizzou Wrestling (9-1, 6-0) lost its first match of the season, 23-9, to No. 5 Oklahoma State (7-2, 4-0)Friday night. The No. 4-ranked Tigers scored decision wins from redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.), redshirt senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.), and junior 197-pounder J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo.), but could not overcome a 9-0 deficit after the Cowboys scored wins in the first three bouts.

The loss was Mizzou’s first lost in dual competition since Jan. 31, 2014, when the Tigers also lost to Oklahoma State in the same building, Gallagher-Iba Arena.

In the first match of the night, redshirt sophomore 125-pounder Barlow McGhee (Rock Island, Ill.) pushed No. 5-ranked Eddie Klimara into overtime, but the Cowboy grappler scored an escape in the tiebreaker overtime for the 2-1 win. The Cowboys were up 9-0 when Mayes stepped onto the mat against Anthony Collica. Mayes scored takedowns in second and third-period, along with an escape at the beginning of the third period to defeat Collica, 5-3. Mayes improved to a stellar 10-0 in dual competition with the victory.

In arguably the most impressive match of the night, redshirt freshman 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) amassed over four minutes of riding time against No. 1-ranked Alex Dieringer, but fell just short to the two-time defending national champion, 4-3.

Ninth-ranked Butler squared up against No. 3-ranked Kyle Crutchmer in the 174 pound bout. Butler and Crutchmer traded escapes in the second and third period, sending the bout to overtime. Butler made quick work of the Cowboy grappler, scoring a takedown in the first overtime period for the sudden-victory, 3-1.

Cox improved to 19-1 overall and 9-1 in dual competition with a 7-3 win over Andrew Marsden in the 197-pound match, the final three points of the night for the Tigers.

#TigerStyle returns home next weekend for two duals inside the Hearnes Center. Mizzou hosts No. 7-ranked Oklahoma on Saturday and Old Dominion on Sunday. Match start time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

Cowboy Wrestling Snaps Mizzou’s Streak

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State’s fifth-ranked wrestling team defeated No. 4 Missouri, who sandwiched 37 wins between a Jan. 31, 2014 loss to Oklahoma State and Friday night’s 23-9 loss to the Cowboys in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

“The fact that we stopped a steak was a good feeling,” coach John Smith said. “You have to give respect to them, 37 matches in a row, that is pretty impressive and I’m glad we had an opportunity to put it to an end.”

The Cowboys picked up three team points after a nail-biter at 125 pounds, where No. 5 Eddie Klimara faced No. 10 Barlow McGhee. The bout was deadlocked at 1-1 after regulation, with each guy notching an escape. With no takedowns scored in sudden victory, the match went to a tiebreaker where Klimara picked up a quick escape in the first 30 seconds and rode out McGhee for the next 30 seconds to earn an exciting 2-1 win.

At 133 pounds, No. 10 Zach Synon picked up a takedown within the first 30 seconds over Gary Wayne Harding. A little more than a minute later, Harding cut the lead to 2-1 with an escape. The Cowboy also earned up an escape to start the second period and went on to score a late takedown to lead the Tiger, 4-2, going into the third period. Harding finished the match strong with a full-period ride-out to win the bout 5-2. The win over tenth-ranked Synon was Harding’s first win over a ranked opponent.

"It feels good to win my positions,” Harding said. “I have to break things down and wrestle all seven minutes as hard as I can go and if it takes more than that, wrestle that as hard as I can. I've just got to win my positions. I got a feel for his underhooks and his length, but mainly I just kept my pressure and kept wrestling. You could kind of feel the match start to weigh on him so I just kept pressing him and wrestled the whole seven minutes."

Top-ranked Dean Heil picked up his second-straight win over a top-five opponent as he defeated No. 5 Matt Manley, 3-1. The bout was scoreless after the first period, with Manley starting the second on bottom. Heil rode out Manley for the full two minutes in the second period, keeping the match scoreless. To start the final period, Heil hit a reversal to open scoring, 2-0. Shortly after, Manley picked up an escape but it was not enough as Heil, with the addition of riding time, earned a 3-1 win.

The Tigers won their first bout of the night at 149 pounds as No. 3 Lavion Mayes defeated No. 16 Anthony Collica, 5-2.

Joe Smith, son of Coach John Smith, wrestled his first match in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday, taking on LeRoy Barnes. Joe opened scoring with a quick takedown, but Barnes escaped just as quickly. The Cowboy managed another takedown late in the period to lead 4-1 after the first. Two more takedowns and an escape in the second gave Joe a 9-3 lead. With just an escape coming from Barnes in the third period, Joe earned a decisive 10-4 victory.

"It was definitely different [wrestling in Gallagher-Iba Arena],” Joe Smith said. “Your adrenaline gets pumping and the home crowd is definitely a lot bigger than anything at Stillwater High School so it was fun. Definitely the biggest dual crowd I've ever wrestled in front of. It was the first home so I'm glad it was big. I'm hoping they were there for the team and not just me. Your adrenaline starts pumping and then that lactic acid starts to hit you really hard in the arms when you're out there. But once I really got going I really started to feel my moves and techniques and it was fine."

The 165-pound match proved to be interesting as No. 1 Alex Dieringer faced No. 5 Daniel Lewis, a redshirt freshman for the Tigers. Dieringer picked up two takedowns in the first period, which would be the deciding factor in the match. With Dieringer leading 4-2, the Tiger rode out Dieringer for both the second and third periods. However it was not enough as Dieringer edged Lewis, 4-3.

At 174 pounds, third-ranked Kyle Crutchmer fell to No. 9 Blaise Butler in a sudden victory thriller, 3-1.

Nolan Boyd became the fifth Cowboy of the night to knock off a top-10 opponent as he put on a great performance against No. 4 Willie Miklus, who owned the series between the two. Boyd stormed out with a takedown in the first 30 seconds. He followed up with another takedown with just eight seconds left in the period to lead 4-1. The Cowboy went on to pick up a reversal in the second period and a 4:31 of riding time to dominate the No. 4 wrestler, 7-2.

“I think this was supposed to confirm that I have a different mindset,” Boyd said. “I just going to take it and run with that. I saw Collica wrestle and realized that’s the style that works for me—keep my feet moving. That’s what I did today.”

The Tigers picked up their third and final win at 197 pounds as true freshman Andrew Marsden faced No. 2 J’Den Cox. The freshman put up a fight but fell, 7-3.

Fifth-ranked Austin Marsden was the only wrestler of the night to score bonus points, earning a 16-0 technical fall over James Romero in only 1:25. The Cowboy senior picked up a quick takedown and followed it with five nearfall counts, closing out an exciting team win for the Pokes.

“We have to recognize that we have just so much more that we left out there, and we still controlled the match and won the key matches,” John Smith said. “If you ever start to settle in and think you’re in a good place, that’s taking some steps backwards. If we’re going to challenge for the championship, I don’t think Missouri is the team to beat. We just need to keep pushing.”

Oklahoma State continues the weekend on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. as it hosts No. 16 Iowa State in a Big 12 battle.

BUCKEYES IN A NUTSHELL

·Ranked No. 9 in this week’s USA Today/NWCA poll, Ohio State is 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten following a 33-9 victory last Sunday against Michigan State

·Two members of Ohio State’s lineup remain unbeaten this year – Nathan Tomasello (13-0) at 125 lbs. and Bo Jordan (10-0) at 165 lbs. Two other starters – Micah Jordan (15-1, 141 lbs.) and Jake Ryan (13-1, 157 lbs.) – have just one loss.

·Nine Buckeyes are ranked in their respective weight classes this week by InterMat. Tomasello maintains his stronghold on the top spot at 125 lbs. while B. Jordan is No. 2 at 165 lbs and Kyle Snyder checks in at No. 2 at heavyweight. Others in the top 10 include M. Jordan (No. 4, 141 lbs.) and Johnni DiJulius (No. 8, 133 lbs.). All nine of Ohio State’s ranked wrestlers are inside of the Top 15.

·The Buckeyes’ lineup features four wrestlers who have earned All-America honors in their careers. Their combined record this year is 36-7.

·True freshman Myles Martin is 3-1 since being inserted into the starting lineup at the beginning of January and is also tied for the team with 21 totals wins (18 of those came while wrestling unattached at open tournaments).

STIEBER TO JOIN COACHING STAFF IN APRIL
Logan Stieber, the most decorated wrestler in Ohio State history, will join the Buckeyes' staff as a coach following April's Olympic Trails, head coach Tom Ryan announced last week. He will bring with him 119 career victories, four national championships, a Hodge Trophy and a team national title. And if things go well in April, a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.

When Stieber officially joins the staff, the group will have a collective six national titles, seven NCAA finals appearances and 11 All-America honors.

HOMEGROWN TALENT
Eight of Ohio State’s 10 probable starters hail from Ohio, including four that were four-time state champions: Stieber, Tomasello, B. Jordan and M. Jordan. DiJulius won three titles while at Walsh Jesuit, Ryan was a state finalist for Olentangy Liberty and Tavanello took home three titles for Wadsworth. Collectively, the group boasts 22 state tiles, 25 finals appearances and 10 team titles.

NOTING TOMASELLO’S STREAK

Redshirt sophomore Nathan Tomasello has won 31 straight matches dating back to last season. It is the longest streak nationally amongst 125 pounders and the fourth longest across all weight classes. During that time, Tomasello has beaten 16 ranked wrestlers and won 20 matches by bonus points.

ROAD WARRIORS

Over the last five seasons, Ohio State owns a 22-9 mark in true road matches and overall has won nine of the last 11 duals away from home. They Buckeyes also own a seven-match Big Ten road winning streak, which started with a 16-15 victory over Purdue on Feb. 3, 2014.

Wrestling Looks to Add Wins on the Road

The Northern Colorado wrestlers will take on Boise State and Oregon State this weekend

GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado Bears are on the road this weekend for a pair of non-conference duals against Boise State (Jan. 29) and Oregon State (Jan. 31).

The Bears are coming off of a 22-19 win last weekend over the Cal Poly Mustangs. UNC won six of the ten matches, with their sixth win coming from a decision at heavyweight to break the 19-19 team point tie after the first nine matches.

The UNC squad will first head to Boise, Idaho to face the Boise State Broncos on Jan. 29 at 7:00 PM MT. The Bears won only three matches against the Broncos last season, falling 32-15. This season, Boise State is .500 in duals, including close wins over Arizona State (22-21) and North Dakota State (19-18).

The Oregon State Beavers host the Bears on Sunday (Jan. 31) for a 3:00 PM MT matchup. The Beavers, currently 5-4 in dual action, defeated UNC last season in Greeley, winning eight of the 10 matches for a 40-6 win. @UNCBearsWrestle Powers Through Boise State

The Bears picked up another dual win on the season, defeating the Broncos 22-15

BOISE, Idaho– The Northern Colorado Bears defeated the Boise State Broncos on Friday night, 22-15, after winning six of the ten matches.

Keilan Torresgot the night started for the Bears, defeating his opponent at 165 pounds by a 7-4 decision. Torres earned a takedown early in the match to pick up the first offensive points of the dual for the Bears, but would give up an escape just before the whistle to start the second period 2-1. Nine seconds into the second period, Torres reversed West to make it a 4-1 lead, and would tack on another takedown as well as the riding time advantage point at the end of the third to earn the win over Taylor West for the second time this season.

At 197 pounds, Trent Noon made waves, pinning Harley DiLulo in just 1:25 to add six team points to the board for the Bears. Despite taking his first committed shot of the match seven seconds in, Noon wouldn't take DiLulo down until 30 seconds later, turning him almost immediately to his back for a four-count. In a similar fashion to earlier this season [Noon won via pin at 2:21 at the Cowboy Open], Noon worked DiLulo on his back to earn the official's mat-slap, ending the match.

Brian Macchionepicked up his second dual win in a row this evening, defeating Gaylen Edmo after a late third period takedown. With the only other points of the match coming from escapes nearing the start of the second and third periods, Macchione pulled out a takedown with just under a minute remaining in the match to secure the 3-1 win, putting the Bears up 12-6 going into intermission.

In yet another rematch on the night, Rico Montoya earned a 12-4 major decision win over Josh Newburg. After an extensive scramble in the middle of the mat, Montoya picked up a takedown and two-point nearfall two minutes into the match for an early 4-0 lead. After another takedown in the second period, Montoya escaped in the third and secured himself the win with another takedown and nearfall to make it 11-1. Despite giving up a takedown and escape in the third, Montoya had riding time locked up, finishing the match up by an eight to give the Bears another four team points.

Ben Polkowske made his 2015-16 dual debut, wrestling Jake Velarde in a close match. Polkowske's first point of the match came seven seconds into the second period – an escape after opting for a down-position start. Velarde also opted for the bottom start going into the third, but Polkowske rode him out the entire period, notching over a minute of riding time for another point to secure his 2-0 win, moving the Bear lead to 19-9 going into the final two matches of the night.

After a pin for Boise State at 149 pounds, it was up to Eleazar De Luca to win the dual for the Bears, and he did just that. Despite being down 2-1 after three minutes of wrestling, De Luca managed a two-point nearfall (after starting the second period on top) before giving up an escape, leaving the match tied 3-3 going into the final period. An escape for De Luca would make it 4-3, a lead he would hold on to the rest of the match, earning the decision win and securing the dual win for UNC, 22-15.

The Bears are back in action this Sunday, Jan. 31 at 3:00 p.m. MT for a matchup against the Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis, Oregon.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Wins by seven Buckeyes – including three via bonus points – propelled No. 9 Ohio State to a 27-9 victory over No. 22 Indiana on Friday evening at University Gymnasium in Bloomington, Ind. Ohio State has now won three straight duals and improves to 8-2 (5-1 Big Ten) overall while Indiana falls to 6-3.

THE SHORT STORY
Nathan Tomasello’s major decision at 125 pounds set the tone for the night as the Buckeyes raced out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back. Bo Jordan also stayed unbeaten this year, improving to 11-0 with his eighth bonus point victory of the season. In the only two bouts that featured two ranked wrestlers, Myles Martin took down No. 8 Nate Jackson late in the third period to secure a 6-5 victory.

TOMASELLO EXTENDS HIS STREAK
The winner of 31 straight matches entering Friday, Tomasello (14-0) wasted little timing jumping out ahead of No. 19 Jordan Oliver in the first match of the night, taking a 6-3 first period lead and cruising from there. In all, he racked up six takedowns and a four-point near fall in the 17-5 major decision (his seventh of the year).

DIJULIUS, JORDAN MAKE IT 13-0
Riding the momentum of Tomasello’s early win, Johnni DiJulius (13-3) extended the Ohio State lead to 7-0 when he shutout Alonzo Shepherd, 7-0. DiJulius’ four-point near fall in the first period gave him a quick lead and then a reversal to start the second made it 6-0. At 141 pounds, Micah Jordan was leading Cole Weaver 7-3 midway through the second period when Weaver fell hard to the mat and injury defaulted, making the score 13-0.

IU WINS AT 149, 157
The Hoosiers got the scoreboard with wins at 149 pounds (Luke Blanton over Hunter Stieber, 6-2) and 157 pounds (Jake Danishek over Justin Kresevic, 8-7). Kresevic lead 6-2 in the match before Danishek came storming back and held a 7-6 lead as time was running down. With 30 seconds left, Danishek took down Kresevic to secure the come-from-behind victory.

MARTIN EDGES JACKSON
Myles Martin (22-3) picked up one of the more impressive wins of his young career, edging eighth-ranked Nate Jackson at 174 lbs., 6-5. It was Martin’s second victory this season over Jackson, with the first coming in the finals of the Eastern Michigan Open. With the score tied at 4-4 late in the third, Martin was able to get the winning takedown and then fend off Jackson for the remaining 40 seconds of regulation.

COURTS, JORDAN WIN MAJORS
Bo Jordan’s 14-5 major decision gave Ohio State a 17-6 lead in the team score and was highlighted by five takedowns, three coming in the first period. Courts (13-6) raced out to a big lead in the first period behind two takedowns and a four-point near fall.

TAVANELLO CLOSES THINGS OUT
Nick Tavanello’s 8-2 major decision over Garret Goldman gave Ohio State its final 27-9 margin of victory. A redshirt junior, Tavanello improved to 15-3 this year and got things rolling in the second and third periods with consistent offensive pressure.

DID YOU KNOW
Ohio State has now won 10 of its last 12 duals away from St. John Arena and is 23-9 over the past five seasons in true road matches.

NEXT UP
The Buckeyes continue their journey through the Hoosier State with a dual against No. 24 Purdue (7-4, 2-3) on Sunday inside Holloway Gymnasium. The match can be seen live on BTN Plus.

No. 12 Rutgers Wrestling Trounces Terps, 30-3

Nine bouts go to the Scarlet Knights in dominant B1G victory

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 29, 2016) – Twelve days off from competition did little to rust up No. 12 Rutgers wrestling. If anything the Scarlet Knights returned to familiar form.

RU (12-3, 3-2) took nine of 10 matches from Maryland (4-10, 1-6) Friday night in a 30-3 thrashing at the Rutgers Athletic Center. Sean McCabe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) opened the dual with a major decision and Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) scored a dramatic 8-5 tiebreaker win to end the evening.

The Scarlet Knights have won eight consecutive home matches dating back to last season and are undefeated “On the Banks” in 2015-16.

McCabe charged up the crowd from the outset with a gutsy performance in the third period to close out a major decision over Michael Beck. Leading 7-2 entering the final stanza, McCabe took shot after shot for two third-period takedowns in his 13-4 win.

Maryland took the 133-pound bout with a 9-2 win from No. 16 Geoffrey Alexander over No. 18 Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.).

At 141 pounds, the Terrapins’ Alfred Bannister made it interesting late against No. 6 Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) by notching a takedown with 12 seconds on the clock. But the surge was not enough, as Ashnault climbed to 19-2 overall and 13-1 in dual competition with a 7-5 win.

Strong wins at 149 and 157 pounds put the Scarlet Knights ahead at the break, 13-3.

149-pounder Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) racked up 1:23 of riding time in a 4-0 win, while 157-pounder Richie Lewis (Toms River, N.J.) accrued a 1:03 advantage in a 6-2 decision. Dippery improved to 12-8, with Lewis jumping to 15-3 overall.

No. 8 Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) etched another “W” for Rutgers out of the intermission in a 15-0 tech fall against Tyler Manion. The tech fall, Perrotti’s third of the season, brings him to 15-2 overall and 13-1 in dual competition.

The dual concluded with four consecutive decisions from 174 pounds to heavyweight. Phillip Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) finished one point shy of a major decision at 174, while Nicholas Gravina (Allendale, N.J.) and Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.) cruised in convincing decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.

Last up was Smith, who after eight minutes of action was tied, 5-5, with Dawson Peck. Smith kept Peck on the mat in the first tiebreaker period and in the second 30-second period escaped and got a takedown to seal it.

Smith improves to 18-5 overall.

Rutgers travels to wrestle in-state rival Princeton (2-5, 1-3) at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Jadwin Gym. The Scarlet Knights have won their last 19 matches against the Tigers. The match will stream live on the Ivy League Digital Network.

Rider University 43, Bloomsburg University 0

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Broncs won all 10 bouts to defeat Bloomsburg in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet Friday night. “Blooms is going through a tough time right now and I feel for that, having been there,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “Our kids wrestled pretty well tonight.”

For Rider (7-8, 3-2 EWL) senior Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) won a major decision, sophomore Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) won a major decision, freshman Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) won by a major decision and junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) won by major decision.

Wolfe won for the sixth straight time and improved to 19-8 overall, 5-0 in the EWL. Since placing eighth at the prestigious Midlands Championships Wolfe is 7-1 in his last eight dual meets. “His experience at Midlands really helped Ryan,” Taylor said. “In the beginning of the year Ryan was still adjusting to moving up two weight classes. He was wrestling at such a fast pace. At 197 you have to be a bit more careful. At Midlands he learned that at this weight it is more of a positional match.”

“I think I peaked at Midlands,” said Wolfe, who was an EWL champion last year at 174. “That got my confidence up. I’m learning how to relax and just wrestle my style, not the style of my opponent. Competing against the level I did at Midlands and being right with them really helped me.”

Senior Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.), ranked ninth in the nation, returned to the lineup after missing the last five matches and won. “It is good to have our full team back,” Taylor said.

Brennan improved to 19-2 overall, 2-0 in the EWL.

Rider sophomore Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) and sophomore Mauro Correnti (Delran, N.J./Holy Cross) also won decisions.

Walsh, ranked 15th in the nation, improved to 18-5 overall, 5-0 in the EWL.

For Bloomsburg (1-13, 0-4 EWL) red-shirt freshman Brendon Colbert gave nationally ranked Walsh a tight match and briefly led 5-4. He was the only Huskie to hold a lead all night.

Rider has now won 10 of the 16 meetings with Bloomsburg, including the last three. The last time Bloomsburg defeated Rider was during the 2008-09 season.

The Broncs compete at the University of Pennsylvania Sunday at 12 noon and return to Alumni Gym to host George Mason in an EWL dual at 6pm Sunday. “That’s kind of annoying, having to do that,” Wolfe said, “but we trust the coaches. They know what they are doing. They are trying to get us to peak at the right time. So I’m sure this is good for us.”

“A day like that, it is tough for the guys to do that, but that’s what makes them tough,” Taylor said. “Mason is a conference match and very important but right now we are just concentrating on Penn. I can’t even think about Mason yet.”

“We’re coming together right now,” Wolfe said. “We have our starting lineup back so I think we are going to finish strong.”

Alexander Wins Fourth Straight at No. 12 Rutgers

Terps Drop Nine Bouts to 12th-Ranked Scarlet Knights

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Redshirt senior Geoffrey Alexander (133) picked up the lone win for Maryland Friday evening, downing 18th ranked Anthony Giraldo of No. 12/12 Rutgers by decision 9-2. It was all Scarlet Knights the rest of the way as the hosts won the next eight bouts and nine total for the 30-3 team decision. Rutgers improves to 12-3 and 3-2 in the Big Ten, while Maryland drops to 4-10 (1-6 Big Ten).

Alexander nearly had Giraldo pinned in the opening seconds of the bout at the Rutgers Athletic Center (RAC), taking the Scarlet Knight down and flipping him on his back. Giraldo managed to get away after several seconds of trouble, but Alexander came away with a six-point lead after a four-point near fall. He remained in control for the remainder of the match before sealing the 9-2 decision to remain unbeaten (5-0) in duals.

Redshirt Sophomore Dawson Peck (285) provided one of the night’s most entertaining matches, nearly knocking off No. 13 Billy Smith in the heavyweight bout. Peck had the first takedown and a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period, but a reversal and takedown for Smith in the second turned the tables.

Peck managed two escapes to tie the match at five and force OT, and the wrestlers went to the tiebreak periods after going scoreless in sudden victory. After failing to escape from the bottom, Peck elected to cut Smith and go for the takedown, but couldn’t put the Scarlet Knight to the mat as Smith eventually came out ahead 8-5.

All five of Rutgers’ ranked wrestlers turned in victories, including a technical fall for 2014 All-American and eighth ranked Anthony Perrotti at 165. No. 20 Sean McCabe provided the other bonus point win for Rutgers, while seven more decisions sealed the win for the Scarlet Knights.

The Terps will return to the mat on Friday, February 5 when the squad hosts No. 6/8 Michigan in College Park. Match time is slated for 7:00 pm.

Engelkes downed #32 Jacob Davis by 7-2 decision at 174 pounds, #16 Scott defeated #20 Anthony Abro 6-1 at 197 pounds in the only ranked matchup of the afternoon, and Bunce stunned #28 Gage Hutchison with an impressive 3-1 heavyweight win.

NIU wrestling head coach Ryan Ludwig was proud of the way his team executed after a week of training that had the Huskies feeling confident heading on the road.

“It’s nice to see the fruits of our training. The guys had a good week of preparation, and it transitioned well,” Ludwig said. “Our lightweights set the tone. We battled through tough positions and that makes the difference in matches.”

As Ludwig pointed out, before three of NIU’s heavier wrestlers defeated marquee opponents, it was the Huskie lightweight who built a lead for the visitors. Alijah Jeffery (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar), Austin Eicher (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) and #15 Steve Bleise (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) each won by decision at 125, 133 and 141 pounds, respectively, to open the dual and give the Huskies a 9-0 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Sandwiched around another NIU win by Andrew Morse (Alto, Mich./Lowell), the Eagles battled back to make it 12-6 before Engelkes notched his first top-33 win of the season. Eastern Michigan then won at 184 pounds to put NIU’s advantage under threat again, but Scott sealed the team dual victory for the Huskies with his third top-33 triumph of the 2015-16 college wrestling campaign via his win over Abro.

For NIU, five of the seven Huskie wins on Saturday came from Michigan natives as Eicher, Bleise, Morse, Scott and Bunce all won on their return to their home state.

The Huskies return home next weekend to host two ranked MAC opponents when Kent State and Missouri come to DeKalb for dynamic dual matchups. NIU will welcome the Golden Flashes on Friday at 7 p.m. before challenging the Tigers on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both duals will be held at Victor E. Court. Admission is FREE to all fans.

Manley and Butler Earn Falls in No. 5 @MizzouWrestling’s 31-12 Victory over No. 7 Oklahoma
Five Tigers earn bonus points in win over Sooners

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The 11th largest crowd in Mizzou Wrestling history witnessed a statement victory Saturday as No. 5 Mizzou (10-1, 6-0) defeated No. 7 Oklahoma (9-3, 4-1), 31-12, at the Hearnes Center. Redshirt junior 141-pounder Matt Manley (Perry, Okla.) swayed the momentum in Mizzou’s favor with a victory by fall in the 141-pound bout, the first of seven consecutive wins in a row for the Tigers, who improved to 10-1 on the season with the victory.

“I keep saying that I’m looking for consistency from some guys, and Matt Manley has been that guy all season,” Head Coach Brian Smith said of Manley after the dual. “He is starting to put up bonus points for us and that’s really good.”

The Sooners took a 6-0 lead after the first two matches, but their lead quickly vanished thanks to the fall from Manley. Manley had control of the match from the very beginning, earning a takedown and a two-point near-fall in the first two minutes of action. Manley recorded the fall over Trae Blackwell at 2:40, increasing his season record to 23-5 and 9-1 in dual competition.

Redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) continued the momentum in the 149-pound bout with a 4-2 victory by decision over Davion Jeffries, giving the Tigers a 9-6 lead. It was Mayes’ second victory this season over Jeffries, after Mayes beat Jeffries, 5-4, at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 5. Mayes had a 2-1 lead in the final period, but still needed another point due to riding time in Jeffries’ favor. Mayes was able to get a takedown with just two seconds left in the match to earn the 4-2 win. With the win, the Tiger junior improved to 20-0 on the season (11-0 in dual competition), the second consecutive season Mayes has started a season 20-0 after winning his first 21 matches of the 2014-15 season.

Next, Mizzou earned an 8-0 victory by major decision from redshirt junior 157-pounder Le’Roy Barnes (Belton, Mo.). Barnes used three takedowns, an escape, and a point from riding time to defeat Oklahoma’s Brock Wingbermuehle. The win was Barnes’ second major decision victory in dual play this season and drove his season record to 20-7, 3-3 in duals.

In the 165-pound bout, redshirt freshman 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) scored two takedowns to earn a 4-0 victory by decision over No. 12-ranked Clark Glass. Lewis wrestled Glass before at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, where he defeated him by an 8-2 decision. The victory gives Lewis a 19-3 record this season, 9-1 in duals.

The Tigers added to their lead with a victory by fall from redshirt senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill). Butler pinned No. 19-ranked Matt Reed at 2:16, his third victory by fall this season and second in dual competition.

Redshirt senior 184-pounder Cody Johnston (Warrensburg, Mo.) earned his first victory in dual competition this year with a 16-0 win by technical fall over Andrew Dixon. Johnston used three four point near-falls over the first two periods to record the technical fall at 3:45

Junior 197-pounder J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) won his 20th bout of the season with a 9-0 victory by major decision over No. 20-ranked Brad Johnson. Cox collected multiple takedowns in the win, earning his 95th career win.

The Tigers will hit the mat once again Sunday, Jan. 31st against MAC rival Old Dominion at the Hearnes Center. The match will begin at 1 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN 3.

@PackWrestle Sets New School Record with 20th Win of SeasonNC State wins 24-9 at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.VA. - A 24-9 road win at West Virginia on Sunday gave the Wolfpack its 20th win of the season, setting a new mark for the most wins in a single season in school history. The Pack (20-0, 4-0 ACC) won five straight matches and held a 16-3 lead late in the dual.

After dropping the first bout at 125 pounds, the Pack reeled off four straight wins and took a 13-3 lead into the intermission.

#28 Jamal Morris controlled his bout at 133 pounds scoring two takedowns and accumulating 3:27 of ride time to win 5-2.

#3 Kevin Jack picked up his 11 straight win with a 9-0 major decision at 141 pounds. Jack scored a takedown and a reversal in the first two rounds, and two more takedowns pushed Jack to the major decision.

Beau Donahue put together a strong third period for the second straight day in winning 5-4 at 149 pounds. Down 3-2 and minus the ride time point, dominated in the third period earning a stall point and then a reversal and scored a 5-4 decision.

#4 Tommy Gantt needed OT to keep his perfect record in tact, but a flurry at the end helped Gantt win 10-8. His biggest defect in the final period was 6-3 and the ride time point clinched, but a takedown with 10 seconds left tied the match and his winning takedown came 33 seconds in.

#7 Max Rohskopf scored the fifth straight win, 5-0 at 165 pounds. After a scoreless first, Rohskopf got a second period take down and worked on top to get a two-point near-fall and ride time.

After two WVU wins, #17 Michael Boykin pulled off a big upset and defeated #7 Jacob Smith 5-3 (SV-3). Boykin's reversal in OT and takedown was the big action of the bout.

#1 Nick Gwiazdowski closed the dual with a 16-0 technical fall. In control the whole bout, a reversal and four-point near fall in the seoncWith the win, Gwiazdowski improves to 100-2 all-time at NC State.

Duke Wins in Nation’s Capital; Beats American 23-13

January 31, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Duke wrestling team won its final four bouts to upend American University, 23-13 in Bender Arena Sunday. The win was the second of the day for the Blue Devils after they beat Columbia 19-16.

Duke improves to 4-5 overall on the year and has won its past three duals. Brian Dorsey grabbed a crucial technical fall at 174 pounds to jumpstart the Blue Devils’ comeback. Zach and Mitch Finesilver both had wins at 141 and 149, respectively, while Trey Adamson, Conner Hartmann and Brendan Walsh rounded out the Duke winners.

American (4-4) raced out to 7-0 lead with wins from eighth-ranked David Terao at 125 and Esteban Gomez-Rivera at 133 pounds. Thayer Atkins battled No. 8 Terao tough, pulling within two, 7-5, in the third period, but couldn’t complete the comeback in an 11-7 decision.

Redshirt freshman Zach Finesilver put Duke on the board for the first time with an outstanding effort at 141 pounds. He came out of a scramble in the second period and finished the movement with a takedown for a 2-1 lead heading into the final stanza. The Colorado native dominated Scotton in the third period to get his second win of the day and 18th of the year.

At 149 pounds, Mitch Finesilver matched his twin brother with a decision to pull the Blue Devils within one, 7-6. Cole Moseley escaped for American in the third to tie the match 1-1, but it was all Mitch down the stretch as he put together one of his patented strong finishes for the 5-1 decision. He is the first Duke wrestler to 20 wins this season, sporting 20-5 record.

The Eagles scored six points with decisions at 157 and 165 to go ahead 13-6 with four matches remaining. Duke started mounting its comeback with a massive technical fall from Dorsey at 174 pounds. Dorsey was all over Michael Eckhart from the start, building a 6-1 lead in the first period. He extended his lead to eight points in the second and scored the clinching four-point nearfall in the final seconds of the bout to secure the bonus points for the Blue Devils.

Adamson put the Blue Devils in front for the first time of the match with an 8-4 decision over Jason Grimes. In an action-packed first period, Adamson broke open a 3-3 draw with a takedown to end the first and an escape to start the second for the 6-3 lead. The Riverton, Utah native remained in control in the final three minutes to put Duke ahead 14-13.

Duke iced the victory with an injury default at 197 as Jeric Kasunic suffered an injury 50 seconds into the match, resulting in a 20-13 Blue Devil lead.

Walsh completed the day with a thrilling 4-3 double overtime win over Jake Scanlan at heavyweight. Tied at 1-1 after regulation, the pair continued to trade escapes to head into double overtime. Needing an escape to the match 3-3 again, Walsh took it one step further with a reversal to score his 11th win of the year.

Overall on the day, the Finesilver brothers, Adamson and Hartmann both came away 2-0 on the day.

Duke returns to action at home Feb. 3 against Gardner-Webb. The Blue Devils will honor the seven seniors prior to the match. Opening bout is set for 7 p.m. on Blue Devil Network+.

Hartmann Fall Proves to be Difference in Victory

January 31, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Duke redshirt senior Conner Hartmann registered another first-period fall to help lead the Blue Devils to a narrow 19-16 win over Columbia in non-conference wrestling action at Bender Arena. Five Blue Devils garnered wins in the victory over the Lions.

Duke sophomore Thayer Atkins, wrestling for the first time in over a month, got the morning started on the right foot with a decision over Vince Pallone at 125 pounds to put Duke (3-5) ahead 3-0. Atkins, after a scoreless first period, scored a takedown in the second period to pull ahead and iced the victory in the third session for his seventh win of the year.

After Columbia (7-3) answered with a major decision to go ahead 4-3, Blue Devil redshirt freshman Zach Finesilver countered with an 8-0 major decision over Joe Moita to launch Duke back in front 7-4. Zach was dominant from the opening whistle, getting an early takedown and then added a four-point nearfall in the final seconds en route to his 17th win of the year.

Mitch Finesilver followed suit at 149 pounds, upending Columbia’s Dan Reed by a narrow 6-4 decision. Heading into the third period all even at 4-4, 12th-ranked Finesilver scored the winning takedown in the final minute of the bout to secure his 19th victory of the year and put the Blue Devils up 10-4.

The Lions roared back in front 13-10 with three consecutive wins to set up an exciting finish. Markus Scheidel edged Connor Bass in a rematch from the Hokie Open at 157 pounds, while Tyrel White used a big third period to upset No. 18 Jake Faust at 165.

Trey Adamson put the Blue Devils back on track with a hard-fought 3-1 decision over Mike Fetchet at 184. After a scoreless first two periods, Adamson got the reversal with just under a minute left in the period for the 2-0 lead. Fetchet escaped with 23 seconds to go, but wasn’t able to get a takedown as Adamson had riding time for the 3-1 win.

Hartmann came up huge for the Blue Devils at 197 pounds, scoring another first-period fall, to give Duke the 19-13 lead heading into the final bout. The nation’s fifth-ranked wrestler scored a takedown of Troy Hembury in the first 50 seconds and just over a minute later had Hembury on his back for the pin. The fall was his fifth of the year and third straight in a dual. He has scored 38 points for the Blue Devils in duals this season.

Columbia picked up a decision at heavyweight, but the fall from Hartmann proved to be the difference.

The match was the first of two for the Blue Devils on the day as they wrestle American at 11 a.m.

No. 12 Rutgers Wrestling Topples Princeton, 28-6

Scarlet Knights defeat the Tigers for the 20th consecutive match

PRINCETON, N.J. (Jan. 31, 2016) – The newly debuted trophy for the Rutgers versus Princeton mat rivalry is headed to New Brunswick. The No. 12 Scarlet Knights ousted Princeton, 28-6, Sunday afternoon at Jadwin Gymnasium for their 20th consecutive victory over their in-state rivals.

“They’ve got some really, really talented kids. Let me tell you, this one kept me up at night, no doubt about it,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “I thought they matched up really well with us and we needed to beat some nationally ranked guys to get this done at 28-6.”

The dual began at 184 pounds, where Nicholas Gravina (Allendale, N.J.) came out firing in a convincing 7-1 win against No. 19 Abram Ayala. Gravina moves 15-6 with the win.

Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.) fought back to within one point of No. 11 Brett Harner a match later at 197 pounds, but could not recover from an early hole in an 8-4 loss.

The decision tied the dual, 3-3, but that was as close as Princeton (4-6, 3-3) would come to the Scarlet Knights (13-3, 3-2).

Rutgers won from heavyweight to 165 pounds, mixing in bonus points, tight wins, and dominance.

Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) eased his way to a 10-4 decision at heavyweight before Sean McCabe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) survived a 4-1 decision against Pat D’Arcy at 125 pounds.

Both wrestlers maintained their recent winning ways. Smith (19-5) has won five consecutive matches, with McCabe taking his fourth in a row.

Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.) scored the first win by fall of his young RU career in 3:55 against Trey Aslanian. Giraldo’s win got him back in the win column at 14-8 overall.

“It was good for him to get out there and score points and get a fall. We needed a fall somewhere,” Goodale said.

At 141 pounds, Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) got back to bonus points in a 10-2 major decision against Jordan Laster. A four-point near fall to close the first period helped the Scarlet Knight to the major, which was his team-leading eighth this season. Ashnault is the first Scarlet Knight to reach 20 wins this season at 20-2.

Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) battled through a wild match at 149 pounds, ultimately escaping for a 6-5 victory as time winded down.

Chris Perez took Dippery (13-8) down with 1:26 remaining in the match to cut Dippery’s lead to 5-4. Perez then controlled Dippery to secure riding time, but needed to hold Dippery on the mat until the period ended to force sudden victory.

Dippery, battling from bottom with the clock dwindling, flipped to his feet for an escape and fought Perez off until the final horn.

“Dippery needed one of those,” Goodale said. “He’s got to get himself in that top-20 so he can qualify the weight for the Big Ten Tournament. That match was huge.”

No. 17 Richie Lewis (Toms River, N.J.) won his third consecutive match by defeating a tough NCAA qualifying opponent in Adam Krop. Lewis (17-3) was in control from start to finish and got himself a 7-4 win.

The final Rutgers win of the day went to No. 8 Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) at 165 pounds. With his 9-5 decision against Judd Ziegler, the 2014 All-American improved to 16-2 overall and 14-1 in duals. He’s won four-straight.

Princeton ended the dual with a 6-3 win from No. 14 Jonathan Schleifer at 174 pounds. Bakuckas (12-9) brought the match to within one but could not get to Schleifer for a takedown before the match ended.

With the win Rutgers improved to 41-35-5 against Princeton all-time.

The Scarlet Knights return to Big Ten competition next weekend at the Rutgers Athletic Center in a critical stretch. RU hosts Wisconsin on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m., followed by No. 8 Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. Both matches will stream live on BTN Plus.

Eagles Drop Pair of Duals to Duke, Columbia

Terao posts two wins to lead AU

WASHINGTON – The American University wrestling team fell to Duke and Columbia in dual action on Sunday at Bender Arena, dropping a 23-13 decision to the Blue Devils before falling, 28-9, against the Lions.

The Eagles (4-5, 1-4 EIWA) opened the day with a non-conference dual versus Duke. American got out to the early lead, getting an 11-5 decision from eighth-ranked senior captain David Terao at 125 pounds. Redshirt junior Esteban Gomez-Rivera put more points on the board for American at 133 pounds, scoring a 9-1 major decision.

While the Blue Devils scored decisions in the next two bouts, the Eagles extended their lead with victories at 157 and 165 pounds. Senior John Boyle, ranked 11th in the nation at 157, held on for a 6-4 decision, while redshirt senior Mitchell Wightman battled to a 7-3 victory over 18th-ranked Jake Faust at 165.

Duke pulled ahead to take a one-point lead with a technical fall at 174 and a decision at 184. Meanwhile, an injury default for the Eagles at 197 pounds clinched the team victory for the Blue Devils, who went on to win the heavyweight bout in the second set of tiebreakers.

Against EIWA foe Columbia, American got out to a fast start with a dominant win by Terao. Scoring a takedown just seconds into the bout, Terao went on to record a fall in one minute.

After a tough loss at 133 pounds, American got back on the scoreboard with a 9-5 decision by redshirt senior Tyler Scotton at 141 pounds. Unfortunately, it proved to be AU’s last win of the dual, as the Eagles dropped seven straight bouts, including a pair of 3-2 decisions at 157 and 165 pounds.

“There were individual things we saw today that were very good,” said American head coach Teague Moore. “Our upper weights still need to make some major improvements.

“At the end of the day, we need to make sure we’re working as individuals and building as individuals. We have several guys that are battling hard and not giving anything away—that’s what we have to build on right now.”

The Eagles are back in action next weekend for a pair of EIWA duals, visiting Binghamton (Feb. 5) and Lehigh (Feb. 6).

“We’re starting to hit EIWA duals, so a lot of these individual matchups are going to play into seeding at the EIWA Championships, and potentially at NCAAs,” said Moore. “We are not happy with these team results, but we have to continue progressing forward with our individuals.”

“There are some key things we can build off of, and we have to stay focused on that. We can’t focus on negative things right now.”
