IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Indiana wrestling team closed the door on their 2015-16 away schedule with a matchup against the unbeaten Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa scored bonus points in eight-of-10 bouts and handed the Hoosiers a 45-0 defeat. The Hawkeyes improved their Big Ten dual record to 9-0, clinching at least a share of the Big Ten Dual Meet Championship.

125: #2 Thomas Gilman (Iowa) maj. dec. #19 Elijah Oliver (IU), 12-4 // Iowa, 45-0*

*The Iowa bench was warned during the 125 lbs. bout.

Coming off of an upset win over Ohio State's No. 11 Hunter Stieber, Luke Blanton faced his next test against No. 2 Brandon Sorensen of Iowa. Sorensen broke a 1-1 tie with the bout's only takedown in the second period, followed by an escape early in the third for the 4-1 decision win.

Freshman Bryce Martin wrestled in the closest clash of the evening, a bout decided in the final two seconds. Martin had the lead with 90 seconds remaining in the second period when Iowa senior Patrick Rhoads picked up two points with the bout's first takedown. Martin secured an escape to start the final period, tying the score, but Rhoads landed the decisive takedown just before the final buzzer.

Fans at Carver-Hawkeye Arena had to wait until after the intermission for the feature bout of the evening, the 174 lbs. matchup between Indiana's No. 11 Nate Jackson and Iowa's No. 10 Alex Meyer. The grapplers justified the hype with the most compelling event in the slate.

Jackson jumped out to a clinical start with three takedowns in the first period. Meyer battled back in the second to tie the bout at 6-6, a score that held to the end of the second. Jackson took the lead with a late escape, but it ultimately set up Meyer's decisive takedown. Meyer held Jackson off for an 8-7 decision win.

Up Next: No. 16 Indiana (6-4, 3-4 Big Ten) vs. Purdue (7-5, 2-4 Big Ten)
Sunday, February 7, 2016 • 1:00 p.m. ET • BTN Plus
University Gymnasium • Bloomington, Ind.

The Hoosiers head home for their dual against their in-state rival, the Purdue Boilermakers. Indiana will look to snap a five-dual skid against Purdue while returning to an even record in the Big Ten.

Sunday's dual will also have a significant impact on the Indiana National Guard Governor's cup competition. A dual win will break the 5-5 tie and give their university a point towards their final tally.

Oregon State Defeats Cal Poly 31-12 in Pac-12 Dual Wrestling Meet
— Cal Poly Wresting —

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Oregon State raced to a 21-0 lead in the first five bouts and held on to defeat Cal Poly 31-12 in a Pac-12 Conference dual meet Friday night in the Mott Athletics Center.

Mustang fans didn’t have much to cheer about as the Beavers used a technical fall, a forfeit and a major decision en route to the first 21 team points of the match.

Then Blake Kastl and Travis Berridge scored wins by decision and J.T. Goodwin notched his sixth fall of the season as Cal Poly won three of the next four bouts.

Amarveer Dhesi, the ninth-ranked wrestler in the nation at 285 pounds, scored a first-period fall to close out the dual meet for Oregon State.

Coach Jim Zalesky’s Beavers improved to 7-5 with the win while Cal Poly fell to 2-8.

Kastl lifted his record to 8-7 for the season with a 6-5 decision over Kennen Lanteri at 165 pounds. Kastl, whose fall clinched last week’s dual meet victory against Grand Canyon, scored three takedowns in the final two periods to overcome an early 2-0 deficit for the win.

Berridge led all the way in his 8-2 triumph over Tyler Chay at 174 pounds, scoring a takedown in the first period, an escape and takedown in the second period and a takedown and riding time in the final period. Berridge is 6-4 on the year and 2-0 in dual meets.

Goodwin and Cody Crawford wrestled a scoreless first period in the 197-pound bout. Crawford tallied an escape in the second period, but halfway through Goodwin notched a takedown with a lateral drop and quickly pinned Crawford in 3 minutes, 57 seconds to lift his mark for the year to 15-9.

At 141, Mustang Colton Schilling (9-7), who missed last week’s dual meet due to injury, dropped a narrow 5-3 decision to Jack Hathaway. Colt Shorts slipped to 13-7 for the season as Abraham Rodriguez scored all of his points in the final period — an escape, takedown and riding time — for a 4-0 decision.

Cal Poly wraps up the dual meet portion of its 2015-16 schedule next weekend with a pair of Pac-12 duals at home.

Coach Brendan Buckley’s Mustangs host Arizona State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center, then wrestles Boise State for Homecoming on Sunday at 1 o’clock outdoors in the University Union plaza.

Upset Alert: Wisconsin knocks off No. 12 Rutgers on the roadBadgers edge Scarlet Knights, 18-15, in tight match

On the Web: http://go.wisc.edu/85f53q

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – With Wisconsin wrestling’s dual tied up at 15-15 against No. 12 Rutgers, it all came down to one match at 125 pounds where all eyes were on Wisconsin’s Johnny Jimenez as he took on No. 20 Sean McCabe in front of a hostile crowd at the RAC.

Jimenez, who entered the match without a win over a ranked opponent this year, ultimately took the edge at the top of the third period with an escape and immediate takedown. With the sophomore’s 7-4 victory, the Badgers clinched the 18-15 upset over the No. 12-ranked Scarlet Knights on the road.

Wisconsin ended an undefeated six-match home winning streak for Rutgers and extended their own advantage in the series history to 3-0.

“Tonight our guys came out and got the job done,” head coach Barry Davis said. “We’re building momentum right now. We had a good meet with Illinois and moved forward from there. You do what you have to do to win in this league. I took Johnny (Jimenez) back to the locker room and got him relaxed and got him out of that atmosphere and he finished the job for us.”

No. 7 Ryan Taylor started the dual out with a bang in a ranked matchup against No. 17 Anthony Giraldo at 133 pounds. Giraldo scored first but Taylor used two escapes to tie it up 2-2 after two periods. Taylor started the third period out by gaining two back points but allowed Giraldo to escape. Taylor was called for a stalling point to knot the score 4-4. With Giraldo holding the riding time advantage, Taylor had less than 10 seconds to pull out a big move. And that was exactly what he did.

With just six seconds on the clock, Taylor used a big turn to throw Giraldo on his back and pinned the Scarlet Knight to give Wisconsin a strong start with a 6-0 lead.

Gabriel Grahek suffered a 6-1 loss to No. 6 Anthony Ashnault to bring the Scarlet Knights within three in the dual.

At 149 pounds, a controversial call on a last second takedown at the end of the second period paved the way for Andrew Crone’s comeback in the third. Rutgers’ Tyson Dippery held a 3-0 advantage headed into the third period after his takedown at the end of the second period was upheld by the officials but that didn’t stop Crone. Crone exploded onto the mat in the third period, picking up a reversal and two nearfall points at the 20-second mark. Crone sealed the 5-4 decision with a riding time point, keeping the early lead in Wisconsin’s favor, 9-3.

No. 17 Richie Lewis edged UW’s T.J. Ruschell at 157 pounds in a tight 3-2 match despite Ruschell nearly being awarded a takedown in the last few seconds of the match.

In one of the most highly anticipated matches of the evening, No. 3 Isaac Jordan took on No. 8 Anthony Perrotti at 165 pounds in an All-American rematch of the 2014 NCAA seventh-place match where Jordan came out on top with a 2-0 decision.

Jordan came across with a pancake in the first period but was denied the back points after. It was a familiar feeling as Jordan used the same strategy he had in 2014, using an escape and riding time point to pull of the win in a rematch that was two years in the making. The win marked Jordan’s fourth shutout of the season and fourth triumph over a ranked opponent this season. He now holds a 17-0 record on the season and extended an 18-match winning streak dating back to last season.

The Badgers had a 12-6 lead at intermission, just their third halftime lead all season.

Ricky Robertson (174 pounds) used a quick reversal to tie the bout at 2-2 with Phillip Bukuckas in the third period. Bukuckas immediately escaped to keep his riding time intact. Robertson had a hard attack at the end to take down Bukuckas and erase the Scarlet Knight’s riding time. Robertson followed in suit to his teammates’ earlier performances and stole away the end of the match, finishing with a 4-3 decision to push Wisconsin to a 15-6 lead.

Rutgers took the next three matches in a row and collected nine-straight points to tie the dual at 15-15 heading into the 125-pound match.

Jimenez had a 2-0 advantage until McCabe tied the bout with a reversal at the end of the second period. Jimenez’s offense came out firing in the third period as he used an escape and takedown to put the match away and complete Wisconsin’s first conference win of the season.

“We have to keep doing what we’re doing and keep moving forward because this is behind us now and now we get ready for Sunday,” Davis said.

The Badgers return to the UW Field House for a Border Battle matchup against Minnesota at noon.

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State’s fourth-ranked wrestling team defeated No. 7 Oklahoma for the second time this season with a 26-11 win in Gallagher-Iba Arena in front of almost 7,000 fans.

“You like the outcome of the score, but there were several matches throughout the night that you just do not want to see at this time of the year,” head coach John Smith said. “I give OU credit. They are a competitive team that wrestles hard and well. There were four or five guys who really grinded through their matches, and because of them we got bonus points. Those really made the difference in the lopsided score and those are the things you like to see.”

Bonus points at 141, 149, 165 and 184 pounds lifted the Pokes (9-2; 6-0 Big 12) over the Sooners after suffering losses at 125 and 133 pounds.

No. 1 Dean Heil cut the Sooners’ lead to 8-5 after a technical fall at the end of regulation, putting up 16 points against Noah Teaney at 141 pounds.

"They way you have to look at it is that good guys don't let stuff like [being down 8-0] bother them,” Heil said. “As an individual, you have to go out and get the job done whether you've lost two or you've lost nine in a row and you're that last match. No matter what, you have to set yourself apart and go perform the way you want to perform and down two matches, 8-0, I went out there and did what I wanted to do and helped the team out in the long run."

At 149 pounds, Anthony Collica defeated Davion Jeffries with a dominant 16-6 decision that included five takedowns.

More bonus points came at 165, as expected. Two-time NCAA champion Alex Dieringer defeated 12th-ranked Clark Glass in an exciting 16-3 major decision. Dieringer improves to 69 wins in his unbeaten streak.

Nolan Boyd gave the Cowboys the final bonus points of the night at 184 pounds to remedy an unexpected loss at 174 pounds. Boyd took on Andrew Dixon and earned three takedowns en route to a 15-2 win.

Sixth-ranked Joe Smith made his Bedlam debut, facing Shayne Tucker at 157 pounds. The Cowboy scored just two points in the first period but kicked it up in the second and third periods, collectively picking up nine more points.

"It was really fun. The student section and the crowd were awesome,” Smith said. “I don't think we've had a crowd like this in a long time and I was really anxious to get out here and wrestle. It shell-shocked me when I got out here a little bit and felt it in my arms and legs a bit. I'm still getting used to the one-hour weigh-in, but I think come nationals we'll all come around."

At 197 pounds, Preston Weigel grinded out a tough 4-3 match against Brad Johnson to seal the dual win. The bout was tied 3-3 heading into the final period with the Sooner on bottom. A solid third-period ride gave Weigel riding time advantage and the win.

"That's just going to help me succeed in future by getting these wins,” Weigel said. “That's two wins back-to-back here and it's a good start, but I'm not satisfied with just this. I've got a lot more work to do."

Heavyweight Austin Marsden closed out the dual with his 19th win of the season. Marsden, ranked No. 5, defeated No. 16 Ross Larson in a close 2-1 match.

The Cowboys will travel to Ithaca, N.Y., on Sunday to wrestle No. 15 Cornell at 12 p.m. CT.

OREM, Utah –The Utah Valley University wrestling team dropped its inaugural Big 12 Conference dual meet to South Dakota State, 28-13, on Friday evening in the PE Building.Despite the loss, seniorsChasen Tolbert(125 pounds) andJade Rauser(133) each recorded bonus-point victories for the Wolverines (3-7, 0-1 Big 12), while redshirt sophomoreDustin Dennison(heavyweight) added a win by decision as UVU won a total three of the 10 matches on the night."Basically half of our team competes every time. We have to get to the point where we have 10-out-of-10 performances and we did not do that tonight," head coachGreg Williamssaid. "South Dakota State is a good team and I give them credit, but we have to do a better job of competing throughout our lineup."The three-time NCAA qualifier Rauser got the Wolverines off to a solid start by making quick work of SDSU's Brance Simms in the opening match of the contest. Following a first-period takedown, Rauser got on top of Simms and quickly pinned him (2:14) to give the Wolverines a 6-0 advantage. The pin was Rauser's second straight over Simms, as he previously defeated him by fall last season to win the 2015 NCAA West Regional title.Following a pair of setbacks at 141 and 149 to give the Jackrabbits (11-5, 4-1 Big 12) their first lead of the night at 10-6, Utah Valley redshirt freshmanRaider Lofthouselooked for the upset over seventh-ranked senior Cody Pack at 157. With the three-time NCAA qualifier Pack holding to an early 8-0 advantage over his UVU counterpart, Lofthouse made his move with a second-period escape and takedown to make it an 8-3 score. The Wolverine redshirt freshman then quickly picked up another two, thanks to his second takedown over Pack early in the third to cut the deficit to just four, at 9-5. Following a Pack injury timeout, the South Dakota State senior managed to hold on as he finished off the match with an escape and a riding time point to take the bout by decision (11-6).With the Jacks later holding to a 16-6 advantage, Wolverine senior 174-pounderRoss Taylorfound himself in a battle with SDSU's David Kocer. Each wrestler seemingly matched one another move-for-move, as the bout remained tied at 4-4 early in the final period. With the score later still deadlocked at 4-all, Kocer managed to score a late takedown to pull out the tightly contested contest by a score of 6-4 to give the Jackrabbits a 19-6 lead. With the match in hand for South Dakota State with just two matches remaining, the Wolverines didn't quit Dennison and Tolbert both walked away victorious. Dennison started the spurt with a 5-0 shutout over SDSU's Alex Macki and the 18th-ranked Tolbert finished the dual with a 13-5 major decision over Ben Gillette to cap the meet at 28-13.Despite dropping the contest, UVU still holds an 8-3 all-time series advantage over South Dakota State. The Wolverines were also originally scheduled to host fellow Big 12 foe North Dakota State on Friday evening as well, but that contest was cancelled earlier in the day due to travel complications by NDSU. The Utah Valley vs. North Dakota State dual will not be made up.UVU will now continue conference action on the road next week when it heads to the Front Range to face Air Force on Feb. 11, Northern Colorado Feb. 12 and Wyoming Feb. 13. The Wolverines will then close their regular-season on Feb. 20 when Grand Canyon comes to town for a non-conference contest.South Dakota State 28, Utah Valley 13133:Jade Rauser(UVU) over Brance Simms (SDSU), Fall 2:16141: Seth Gross (SDSU) overTrevor Willson(UVU), MD 10-0149: Alex Kocer (SDSU) overMatthew Ontiveros(UVU), Fall 2:40157: #7 Cody Pack (SDSU) overRaider Lofthouse(UVU), Dec. 11-5165: Logan Peterson (SDSU) overBrayden Humpherys(UVU), Dec. 9-4174: David Kocer (SDSU) overRoss Taylor(UVU), Dec. 6-4184: Brady Ayers (SDSU) overWill Sumner(UVU), Dec. 9-4197: #12 Nate Rotert (SDSU) overAryton Almberg(UVU), Fall 1:14285:Dustin Dennison(UVU) over Alex Macki (SDSU), Dec. 5-0125: #18Chasen Tolbert(UVU) over Ben Gillette (SDSU), MD 13-5Official: Jimmy ChenAttendance: 479

Wisconsin Upsets No. 12 WRES, 18-15

Squads split bouts, 5-5, but pin at 133 pounds makes the difference

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 5, 2016) – A Wisconsin pin in the opening bout at 133 pounds made it an uphill climb for No. 12 Rutgers wrestling Friday night at the Rutgers Athletic Center. The Scarlet Knights were unable to recover after battling to the final match, falling to the Badgers, 18-15.

Along with the late fall to open the dual, RU dropped two other matches by a point and fell in the winner-take-all 125-pound matchup. The dual loss was Rutgers’ (13-4, 3-3) first at home this season, snapping a seven-match winning streak dating back to 2014-15.

“They wrestled last year and it was a really good match,” said head coach Scott Goodale of the 125-pound matchup between No. 20 Sean McCabe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Johnny Jimenez. “That thing can go either way. He didn’t finish his single-leg early in the match which is huge … we didn’t convert takedowns up and down the lineup and that’s what happens.”

The night began at 133 pounds with a matchup between No. 7 Ryan Taylor (UW) and No. 17 Scarlet Knight Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.). Giraldo (14-9) and the 2015 All-American were tied, 4-4, with time winding down, but Taylor threw Giraldo to his back and got the pin at 6:54 to give UW a 6-0 dual lead.

A bout later, No. 6 141-pounder Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) won the 50th match of his RU career, 7-2, against Gabe Grahek to cut into the Badger (2-5, 1-4) lead, but another close call at 149 pounds proved to be huge in the dual outcome.

Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) took a 3-0 lead into the final period, where Wisconsin’s Andrew Crone reversed and got back points before winning by a 5-4 final.

The two teams would split the next two bouts leading into the intermission.

No. 17 Richie Lewis (Toms River, N.J.) won his fourth consecutive match by out-gritting TJ Ruschell, 3-2. In a rematch of 2014 All-Americans at 165 pounds, No. 3 Isaac Taylor secured a 4-0 win over RU’s No. 8 Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.).

Another close loss followed at 174 pounds, where Phillip Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) fell victim to a Ricky Robertson takedown with 34 seconds remaining in a 4-3 loss.

But Rutgers did not go down without a fight.

Consecutive decisions at 184, 197, and 285 pounds got the Scarlet Knights right back in the dual, tying things at 15 all.

It began with Nicholas Gravina (Allendale, N.J.), who with 3:56 of riding time scored a 7-2 decision to make the lead 15-9 Wisconsin. Senior 197-pounder Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.) followed with a gutsy performance and a 7-4 win over Eric Peissig. That win made the dual 15-12 in favor of the Badgers.

No. 13 Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) brought Rutgers all the way back with a 4-2 decision and 1:07 of riding time against Brock Horwath (UW). In what was his 94th-career win, Smith (20-5) scored the first takedown 35 seconds into the match and never looked back.

With the dual tied, 15-15, it came down to McCabe against Jimenez at 125 pounds. The match swung on the first takedown, with McCabe holding a single on Jimemez for nearly 40 seconds before losing the two in a scramble.

McCabe (13-8) made it interesting with a reversal in the second period, but an escape and takedown to start the third for Jimenez put the match away and gave the Badgers an 18-15 win.

Wisconsin improved to 3-0 all-time against Rutgers with the victory.

Rutgers is back in action at the RAC on Sunday, Feb. 7 at noon. The Scarlet Knights host No. 8 Michigan (10-2, 5-1) in their final home conference match of the season.

Prior to the match, the program will honor seniors Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.), Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.), Mikey Simmons (Middletown, Pa.) and Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.). The match will stream live on BTN Plus.

Gophers Kick Off Weekend with Win Against Wildcats
Minnesota extends winning streak against Northwestern to 14 matches with Friday's victory

An upset of a former national champion followed by a pin that took just 30 seconds set up No. 17 Minnesota to pick up its first road victory of the season, 22-20, over Northwestern on Friday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The win puts Minnesota over .500 again this season (8-7, 4-3) and extends the program’s longest active winning streak over a Big Ten opponent to 14.

In the night’s most-anticipated match – the only ranked-versus-ranked bout on Friday’s card – No. 16 Jake Short pulled off a thrilling comeback at 149 pounds to knock off No. 4 Jason Tsirtsis, the 2014 NCAA champ. Tsirtsis led the match 3-0 after the second period, but Short earned a pair of takedowns in the match’s final 90 seconds, including a match-clinching finish in the waning seconds of the final period that came with a pair of back points to complete the 7-4 upset. It was Short’s fourth win against a ranked opponent this season, tied for second-most on the team, and his first win in three tries against Tsirtsis.

“Like a lot of our matches, there were a lot of ups and downs,” said head coach J Robinson. “Tonight, Short’s match was a big motivator. He found a way to win and that’s what we keep preaching. You have to focus on those positive things and keep the other guys going in the right direction.”

Immediately follow Short’s win, 157-pounder Brandon Kingsley locked in a cradle against Anthony Petrone in the opening seconds of their match, taking Petrone to his back and pinning his shoulder blades to the mat in just 30 seconds. The quick finish was a stark contrast to the previous match’s last-second heroics, but equally impactful on the night’s final score. The fall was Kingsley’s fifth this season. All five pins have come in the first 100 seconds of matches, with four of them taking 48 seconds or fewer. Friday’s was his second-fastest finish, four seconds behind his pin of Elliott Raiford (Appalachian State) at the Southern Scuffle.

The wins from Short and Kingsley came at a critical time for Minnesota, which began the dual by dropping the first two matches and falling into an 8-0 hole. Northwestern took a 5-4 decision at 125 pounds when Garrison White added the riding time point over Steve Polakowski, then added a five points when No. 20 Dominick Malone defeated Ben Morgan by technical fall, 16-1.

No. 7 Tommy Thorn narrowly missed a major decision at 141 pounds after a late reversal by Jameson Oster, but his 10-3 decision got the Gophers on the board and set the stage for Short and Kingsley to score the next nine points in the dual and catapult the Gophers into the lead, 12-8, at halftime.

Following the break, the teams traded the lead four times in the night’s final five matches. That began when Northwestern scored a fall in the second period at 165 pounds to recapture the lead.

With the Gophers trailing by one, Nick Wanzek put together a shutout performance against Mitch Sliga, scoring both of the match’s takedowns to earn a 6-0 decision and put the Gophers back on top, 15-14.

Another fall for Northwestern, this coming in the first period at 184, gave the Wildcats a five-point lead with two matches remaining, matches that featured a pair of Gophers with two of the three best Big Ten records on the roster – No. 3 Brett Pfarr and No. 9 Michael Kroells.

Pfarr pulled the Gophers to within two points with a 9-4 decision over Jacob Berkowitz. The win pushed Pfarr’s team-high win total to 28 and maintained his perfect record in both duals (15-0) and in the Big Ten (7-0).

With the score 20-18, the winner of the heavyweight bout between Kroells and Conan Jennings would win the dual for his team. As he has often this season, Kroells controlled the match early and racked up takedowns late, adding three in the third period to blow open his match and finish off an 11-2 major decision.

Full match-by-match are available at z.umn.edu/wrnw

The Gophers return to action later this weekend when they wrestle a Super Bowl Sunday matinee against the Wisconsin Badgers at 12 p.m. in Madison, Wis. Sunday’s contest will be streamed live on BTN Plus, with mat-side updates available throughout on Gopher Wrestling Twitter.

No. 18 Virginia Defeats Duke, 22-12
Six Cavaliers pick up wins in UVA’s first ACC victory

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 18 Virginia wrestling team won six of 10 bouts in a 22-12 defeat of Duke Friday evening in an ACC dual at Memorial Gymnasium. Virginia (6-4, 1-2 ACC) won its 10th straight dual against Duke (4-6, 0-2).

Nick Herrmann (125), George DiCamillo (133), Andrew Atkinson (157), Tyler Askey (174), Will Schany (184) and Patrick Gillen (285) each scored wins for the Cavaliers.

“It feels good to get a win,” Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. “We saw a lot of good things tonight. Starting right off the bat with Herrmann getting the major decision – that set the tone for the night. We harped on our guys to take more attacks and be more offensive and they did that tonight, so I'm happy about that. Zach Nye looked amazing tonight and almost pulled off a big one. We need to build on this for another tough one tomorrow”

Virginia jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the dual. With three takedowns in the final period, Herrmann scored a 12-4 major decision over Thayer Atkins to give UVA a 4-0 edge, and the lead quickly grew to 10-0 as DiCamillo, ranked sixth nationally, won by forfeit.

Duke won the next two bouts, as Zach Finesilver downed UVA’s Zach Watson, 8-3, at 141 before his twin brother Mitch Finesilver, ranked 10th nationally, blanked Chris Yankowich, 6-0, at 149.

Atkinson parlayed a dominating first period to cruise to a 9-3 win over Connor Bass at 157. Atkinson scored a takedown 10 seconds into the match and rode Bass for the entire period while also accumulating four back points. That gave UVA a 13-6 lead at the dual’s midway point.

Duke got three points back in a wild 165-pound match as Jake Faust rallied to top Fox Baldwin, 16-12. Baldwin took a 9-3 lead in the second period when he put Faust on his back and nearly pinned him, but Faust came back in the final period, nearly pinning Baldwin while racking up a trio of takedowns as well as four back points.

UVA won the next two bouts, as Askey took control early in an 8-3 win over Brian Dorsey at 174 before Will Schany held off a late charge from Trey Adamson to win 8-7 at 184. Schany prevailed on the riding-time point after accumulating 2:07 of riding time.

The feature match of the night came at 197, where No. 5 Conner Hartmann of Duke held off a late charge from No. 10 Zach Nye to win 4-3. Nye was in on a leg twice in the final minute, but Hartmann defended well to stave off the takedown attempt.

UVA finished with a win in the heavyweight bout as Patrick Gillen claimed a 7-3 win over Brendan Walsh.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI dropped a dual to Iowa State 18-16 in front of a sold-out crowd in the West Gym Friday.

UNI fell to 3-8 overall, 2-4 in the MAC and Iowa State improved to 9-5, 1-2 in the Big 12.

UNI got wins from:

Blaize Cabell at 285 pounds

Dylan Peters at 125 pounds

Adam Perrin at 149 pounds

Bryce Steiert at 157 pounds

Cooper Moore at 165 pounds

UNI dropped the first match of the night, but No. 16 Blaize Cabell got the first win for UNI. With two takedowns in the first period, he led 4-1 to start the second. He kicked out quickly in the second period to go up 5-1. He went on to grab two more takedowns to win 9-4 over Marcus Harrington and tie up the team score 3-3.

At 125 pounds, No. 7 Dylan Peters trailed 2-1 to start the second period. He got an escape early in the second to tie it back up. Another takedown extended the lead for Kyle Larson. Peters got an escape and then his first takedown of the match with 30 seconds left in the second period. He cut Larson loose quickly to make it 5-5 to start the third period.

Peters cut Larson early, but then went on the attack to get a takedown. Larson tied it back up with just more than a minute left at 7-7. He grabbed a final takedown with 43 seconds left in the match and kept Larson down to go on to win 9-7. The decision pushed the Panthers up 6-3 over the Cyclones.

With a fall at 133 pounds and decision at 141 pounds, the Cyclones surged ahead 12-6 at intermission.

After nearly two years off the mat due to injury, Adam Perrin made a strong comeback in his second match of the year. He grabbed a takedown and two quick nearfall points in the first. After an escape and another takedown, Perrin led 6-1 to start the second.

Perrin grabbed a takedown off the neutral start. They exchanged reversals, and Perrin grabbed an escape to lead 11-3 to start the third. A takedown and riding time in the third gave Perrin the 14-4 major decision.

Panthers continued to trail 12-10 until No. 19 Bryce Steiert’s decision at 157 pounds put the Panthers up. He wasn’t able to pin Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer, but his nearfall points pushed him ahead 12-6.

UNI led 13-12 when No. 19 Cooper Moore took the mat at 165 pounds. Moore led 1-0 to start the third, but he cut No. 8 Tanner Weatherman loose to tie it up 1-1 to force overtime. Moore got the takedown after an officials review to go on to win 3-1 in sudden victory.

The win pushed UNI up 16-12 over ISU.

Kyle Lux trailed 3-1 to start the third at 174 pounds. An escape narrowed the gap, but a final takedown would seal the decision for No. 19 Lelund Weatherspoon. His riding time would push the score to 6-2.

Iowa State closed in 16-15 as it came down to the final match at 184 pounds. Iowa State grabbed the final match and team victory to win, 18-16.

He claimed his highest national finish as a sophomore in 1990 when he took second place at the NCAA Championships, and he followed up with fourth-place finishes in 1991 and 1992.

Steffensmeier concluded his career at UNI ranked No. 4 all-time in wins, holding a career record of 115-29-3. He was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team in 1991 and 1992. As a senior in 1992, Steffensmeier became the first UNI wrestler to earn Academic All-America honors when he was named to the GTE Academic All-America third team.

Tonight the Panthers made former UNI wrestling coach Don Briggs an honorary captain. When Briggs became the head wrestling coach in 1982, he had already been working at UNI for seven years. In high school, Briggs wrestled at Jefferson High School in his hometown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He wrestled at the University of Iowa under head coach Dave McCuskey and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts in physical education.

During his first year as UNI’s head coach, he guided the Panthers to a 17-3 record, which included a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. He was named National Rookie Coach of the Year. Briggs coached the Panthers to a 164-98 record, giving him the most Division I victories in UNI wrestling history. Briggs was named the NCAA West Regional Coach of the Year 10 times.

In 1987, Briggs led the Panthers to 18 victories, the most in school history for a single season. Briggs coached 51 All-Americans and 14 national champions. The Panthers dominated the West Regional after Briggs took over, placing second from 1983 through 1985, and winning it the following 12 seasons.

Briggs stepped down as head coach of the UNI wrestling team on June 30, 1997, to teach full time in the school’s Department of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services.

No. 6 Michigan Overtakes MD Late

Alexander Wins Fifth Straight, Bannister Notches Win

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland tallied victories in two of the opening three matches, but No. 6/8 Michigan came on strong late to earn a 33-6 victory over the host Terrapins Friday evening. Redshirt senior Geoffrey Alexander (133) and redshirt freshman Alfred Bannister (141) notched back-to-back wins to put the Terps ahead early, then the Wolverines took the next seven to move to 11-2 (6-1 Big Ten). Maryland slides to 4-11 (1-7 Big Ten).

Alexander continued his successful run through the Big Ten with his fifth consecutive victory, this time knocking off Michigan’s Rossi Bruno. After a scrappy first period, Alexander got on the board with a late takedown for a 2-0 lead. The grapplers would trade escapes in the ensuing second and third frames, but Alexander held off any desperate attempts late to remain unbeaten in duals (6-0) this season.

Bannister got back in the win column with a clutch performance in the 141-pound bout, getting a 3-1 sudden victory decision over George Fisher. Both wrestlers earned an escape in the first three periods, but neither could break their opponent’s defense for a go-ahead takedown. Bannister made his move in the first sudden victory period, getting a hold of Fisher on top for his second Big Ten victory of the year.

Bannister’s win had the hosts ahead 6-3 after the first three weights, but two close matches at 149 and 157 gave the Wolverines a 9-6 edge before the break. Freshman Wade Hodges (149) held his own against No. 7 Alec Pantaleo, but couldn’t takedown the sophomore as he dropped a 5-1 decision. After going behind 5-1 in the first two periods, redshirt senior Lou Mascola (157) battled back with a takedown and two escapes to tie his match with No. 9 Brian Murphy in the third. Mascola was aggressive until the end, but riding time went in the Murphy’s favor for a 6-5 decision.

Michigan pulled away in the final four bouts, earning four bonus point victories and two pins for the 33-6 team decision. The Terps will be back in action with a pool of wrestlers entered in the Messiah Open in Grantham, Pa. tomorrow. UMD will return to dual match action on February 14 when the squad battles Wisconsin (1-5, 0-3 Big Ten) and George Mason (6-8, 1-3 EWL).

Hartmann Scores Top 10 Win; Duke Falls at No. 18 Virginia

February 5, 2016

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –Duke redshirt senior Conner Hartmann grabbed his 88th career victory tonight, beating No. 10 Zach Nye of Virginia as the Blue Devils fell to the 18th-ranked Cavaliers 22-12 in ACC wrestling action. Mitch and Zach Finesilver and Jake Faust all added wins for Duke.

Duke (4-7, 0-3 ACC) fell behind to the Cavaliers 10-0 after a major decision at 125 and a Blue Devil forfeit at 133 pounds. However, the Finesilver brothers came back and did what they’ve been doing for the past month. And that would be winning.

Zach Finesilver, at 141 pounds, put the Blue Devils on board with an 8-3 decision over Zach Watson. After an early takedown from Watson, Finesilver dominated much of the next six-plus minutes. The redshirt freshman scored a reversal seconds later and never looked back. Zach added three more points in the second period and cemented his 20th victory with three more points in the third for the 8-3 decision.

Riding a 10-match win streak heading into tonight, Mitch Finesilver made it 11 with ease as he scored a 6-0 decision. Held scoreless in the first period, the sophomore 149-pounder got the takedown midway through the second period and then added four more points in the third period for the 6-0 blanking of Chris Yankowich and his 22nd win of the season.

The Cavaliers stretched their lead back to seven points, 13-6, with a 9-3 decision at 157 pounds. Duke redshirt junior Jake Faust answered with an incredible comeback for a 16-11 triumph at 165 pounds.

Trailing 9-3 early in the second period after a takedown and nearfall from Fox Baldwin, Faust went right to work. He escaped quickly and then got the takedown in the next motion to make it 9-6 to set up a big third period. Just like he did two nights earlier, Faust dominated the third period and got two more takedowns to tie the match 10-10. Battling an exhausted Baldwin, Faust got the freshman on his back for four more points late to seal the victory and bring Duke to within four, 13-9, with four matches remaining.

Virginia (6-4, 1-2 ACC) responded with a 7-3 win at 174 pounds and then Will Schany held off a furious third period from Duke’s Trey Adamson for the 8-7 victory.

Down 5-3 in the third period, Adamson took down Schany to tie the bout 5-5, but Schany’s two minutes of riding time forced Adamson to let him out, giving Virginia the 6-5 lead. However, with all of the momentum Adamson went right back at Schany and scored another takedown to tie the match with 28 seconds left. The Duke veteran let Schany out again and went for the win, but ran out of time as Schany was able to hold on for the victory.

The match of the night featuring fifth-ranked Hartmann and No. 10 Nye was up next and it did not disappoint. With just one loss on the year, Hartmann went to work right away with an early takedown. Nye responded right away with the reversal to tie the match 2-2 and Hartmann escaped in the final few seconds of the period to take a 3-2 lead into the second stanza.

Hartmann added another single point with an escape in the second to make it 4-2. After a lot of hand fighting in the second, Nye entered the final period needing an escape and takedown for the win. The Cavalier veteran got the escape right away and nearly got a takedown, but great defense from

Hartmann gave him his 88th career victory. He is tied for eighth on the Duke career wins chart.

Virginia finished the match with a 7-3 decision at heavyweight to come away with its first ACC win of the year.

The Blue Devils are right back at it, Wednesday, Feb. 10 at No. 14 North Carolina. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Despite wins by Nathan Tomasello, Micah Jordan, Bo Jordan and Kyle Snyder, top-ranked Penn State got key bonus-point victories at 149, 157 and 184 pounds to earn a 24-14 victory over No. 9 Ohio State in front of a sold-out crowd at the Bryce Jordan Center.

The Buckeyes saw their four-match winning streak to an end despite some noteworthy performances, including a last second win for Tomasello and another dominant performance from Snyder.

Tomasello (16-0) got the dual off to a big start for Ohio State, earning his 34th consecutive win in dramatic fashion, knocking off fourth-ranked Nico Megaludis (21-2), 3-1, on a takedown with just 15 seconds remaining in the third period. It was also Tomasello’s 18th win over a ranked opponent during his winning streak, which is now the third longest in school history.

Riding the momentum of Tomasello’s big opening win, Johnni DiJulius got out to a 4-0 lead over fifth-ranked Jordan Conaway on a takedown and two-point near fall, but Conaway battled back with an escape, takedown and another escape to start the second to tie the score at 4-4. M. Jordan was next at 141 pounds, and he continued his impressive 2015-16 season by winning his 18th match, this one a 6-3 decision over No. 14 Jimmy Guilbon that was sealed up with a takedown with just 26 seconds remaining in the third period. Jordan added another takedown as the third period buzzer sounded.

After intermission, B. Jordan got the Buckeyes back in the win column with a tight 3-2 decision over Geno Morelli at 165 pounds. The match wasn’t decided until a Jordan takedown with 35 seconds remaining in the third period. Prior to that, both wrestlers had scored on escapes. Jordan remains unbeaten this year at 13-0.

Myles Martin battled top-ranked Bo Nickal until deep into the third period, leading 6-5 with just over a minute remaining before Nickal ended the bout with a flurry of points, including a takedown and four-point near fall for the 11-5 decision. The win gave the Nittany Lions a 16-9 edge in the dual. Top-ranked Morgan McIntosh then extended the lead to 19-9 with a 4-0 shutout of Kenny Courts at 184. From there, a 24-9 tech fall for Morgan McIntosh over Josh Fox made the team score 24-9.

Snyder was his usual dominant self, scoring on nine first-period takedowns and then finishing off his 24-9 tech fall over Jan Johnson with three more in the second period. In just two matches this year, he has outscored his opponents 44-18.

#17 Panthers Fall to #10 Hokies

Pitt resumes action Sunday at West Virginia

PITTSBURGH – The 17th-ranked Pitt wrestling team fell to No. 10 Virginia Tech in a Friday night ACC matchup at the Fitzgerald Field House. The Hokies won the dual 28-7.

The Panthers suffered their third straight loss, all of which came from opponents ranked within the top 10.

“Virginia Tech has a good team,” head coach Jason Peters said. “We battled in some weights and in others we need a little more hustle on bottom. If you want to beat a good team, you need more of a fight in a few different weights. We’ll be back to the drawing board tomorrow to get ready for West Virginia on Sunday.”

Sophomore Dom Forys (133) continued his winning ways as he defeated the 2014 ACC Champion Dennis Gustafson in a 14-4 major decision. Forys never trailed in his match.

Redshirt sophomore Cody Wiercioch (165) returned to the win column tonight as he upset Virginia Tech’s 11th-ranked David McFadden in a 7-6 decision.

The Panthers have a quick turnaround as they head to Morgantown, W.Va., Sunday, Feb. 7 for a 1 p.m. dual with the Mountaineers.

For all things Pitt wrestling, follow the team on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

CHAPEL HILL --- No. 13 North Carolina beat Navy 24-12 before falling to ACC rival Duke 21-17 in a dual match doubleheader Wednesday night at Carmichael Arena. Joey Ward, Ethan Ramos and Alex Utley each won twice for the Tar Heels, who are now 11-4 on the year and 1-3 in the ACC ahead of Saturday's Senior Night dual against Pittsburgh at 7 p.m.

No. 11 Ward got Carolina going against the Midshipmen (9-3) with his second technical fall in as many matches. The redshirt junior from Cincinnati dominated Adam Connell from the start and the bout was 1:35 into the second period with Ward leading 16-1. No. 5 Evan Henderson then put the Tar Heels ahead with a 4-2 decision at 149 before No. 9 John Michael Staudenmayer gave the host the lead for good two matches later.

Staudenmayer beat Navy's Michael Coleman 8-3 at 165 pounds to make it 11-9. Ramos, the No. 2-ranked 174-pounder in the country, gave the Tar Heels some breathing room next, pinning Ryan Harman with one second left in the first. The fall was Ramos' second of the year and it gave UNC a 17-9 advantage with three bouts remaining.

No. 19 Utley's 11-3 major decision over Robert Mannier at 184 effectively put the dual out of reach, and Cory Daniel's win over Nick Mabry at heavyweight allowed Carolina to double up Navy.

The Tar Heels squandered an early lead in the nightcap in dropping a tight contest to its cross-town rival. A Duke forfeit at 133 gifted Carolina six points and Ward's 6-1 win over Zach Finesilver at 141 gave Coleman Scott's squad a 9-3 lead.

The momentum shifted at 157, where Connor Bass pinned Jack Clark with one minute remaining in the final period to give the Blue Devils a 12-9 lead. The deficit grew to six with Jack Faust's tight 5-4 win over Staudenmayer at 165.

Ramos did his best to get the Tar Heels back on even footing, narrowly missing a last-second pin in a wild 27-8 technical fall victory over Brian Dorsey. The tech fall was Ramos' fifth consecutive bonus point win and it saw him improve to 18-2 overall and 4-0 in the ACC. Utley briefly put Carolina back in front with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Trey Adamson at 184 before Duke mustered one final rally.

No. 5 Conner Hartmann edged Hess 4-2 at 197, meaning the heavyweight bout would decide the dual. Duke's Brendan Walsh scored the lone takedown of the match and held off a late flurry from Daniel to win 4-3 and give the Blue Devils their first win over Carolina since 2004.

UNC will close out its ACC schedule against Pittsburgh on Saturday at 7 p.m. Admission for the Senior Night dual is free to all spectators.

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State leaned on its nationally ranked wrestlers to get bonus points and the 22-15 team win over UNI wrestling Saturday.

UNI fell to 3-10 overall, 2-5 MAC. NDSU improved to 4-5 overall, 1-2 Big 12.

The Panthers pulled some of the usual starters but got wins at 133 pounds, 165 pounds, 197 pounds and heavyweight.

North Dakota State got started with one of their two nationally ranked wrestlers with No. 16 Josh Rodriguez. He earned a tech fall to push the Bison up 5-0 in team scoring.

No. 13 Josh Alber came out attacking. He grabbed a takedown early in the first and let Nico Colunga up. He earned another takedown and four nearfall points before sticking Colunga in the first period at 2:05. It was Alber's third fall of the season.

NDSU went on to win the next three weights at 141 pounds, 149 pounds and 157 pounds.

Taylor Berger jumped out to a 4-2 lead to start the second period at 165 pounds. An escape early in the second was the only scoring for the period, putting Berger up 5-2 over Grant Nehring to start the third. Berger fought off Nehring's attacks and earned a riding time point to win 6-3.

Kyle Lux struck first at 174 pounds, getting the takedown. However, Tyler McNutt got a reversal to tie it up 2-2 at the end of the first. McNutt got another reversal in the second and started building riding time to start the third period up 4-2. He went on to earn the riding time point and beat Lux, 5-2.

NDSU also got a win at 184 pounds from All-American No. 4 Hayden Zillmer.

After a scoreless first period, Cody Krumwiede earned more than a minute of riding time before giving up an escape to NDSU's Logan Paxton at 197 pounds. Krumwiede lost his riding time advantage, but got an early escape in the third to tie it up 1-1 and send it into overtime. With just four seconds left, Krumwiede notched a takedown to win 3-1 in sudden victory.

Heavyweight Blaize Cabell took an early lead with two takedowns in the first period and an escape off the start in the second period. Up 5-3, Cabell released NDSU's Ben Tynan in the third and earned another takedown. He would release Tynan one more time but would go on to win, 7-4.

PHILADELPHIA – Decisions, decisions.

All 10 matches between the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team and No. 15 Cornell came down to decisions, but the Quakers were only able to come out on the winning side in three of the matches during a 21-9 loss to the Big Red at The Palestra.

Sophomore Marc Mastropietro had the biggest win for the Quakers, knocking off two-time NCAA qualifier Mark Grey in overtime, 8-6. Mastropietro found himself behind, 4-1, after the first period, but rallied with a pair of takedowns in the third to force sudden victory. Mastropietro pushed the action in the extra frame, finding the winning takedown with under ten seconds remaining.

May Bethea picked up his 18th win of the season with a 7-3 decision over Taylor Simaz at 157 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Bethea connected on a takedown in the second and then two more in the third period for the win.

Frank Mattiace closed out the dual with a win at 197 pounds, defeating Ben Honis, 6-1. Mattaice scored takedowns in the first and third periods, and over 3:00 of riding time added the sixth point for his second win since returning from injury last week.

A pair of matches between nationally-ranked wrestlers went to Cornell, helping provide the final margin of victory. At 184 pounds, No. 15 Lorenzo Thomas pushed No. 1 Gabe Dean to the brink but a scramble in the final second of overtime ended up with Dean on top for the winning takedown in a 7-5 decision. All three of Dean’s takedowns in the match were similar in fashion – each came off a scramble where Thomas tried to funk roll his way out of a shot and Dean would work the score after some mat wrestling. In the second period, Dean chose down and Thomas was able to earn two backpoints with a cross-wrist tilt to help force overtime.

At 174 pounds, No. 5 Brian Realbuto evened the season series with No. 15 Casey Kent a one apiece with an 8-2 decision. Realbuto had the edge quickly, connecting on a pair of takedowns in the first period and adding one more in the third.

Another swing match that went in Cornell’s favor was a 5-2 decision for Joey Galasso over No. 11 C.J. Cobb at 149 pounds. Galasso struck early, scoring less than 30 seconds in and a takedown off a Cobb last-ditch shot in the third period iced the match for the Philadelphia native.

At 133 pounds, No. 1 Nahshon Garrett defeated Caleb Richardson, 9-3. Garrett had three takedowns in the match, including two in the first period. The Garrett win was one of three for the Big Red to open the dual, with Jeramy Sweany (7-1) and Dalton Macri (12-5) also earning decisions.

The Quakers are right back at it on Sunday, hosting Columbia (1 p.m.) and Bucknell (3 p.m.) in The Palestra. Senior Day ceremonies will be held between the duals.
