We're approaching the end of another regular season in Delaware, and there's been some stellar play coming from a lot of kids in the state. Any early predictions on who will make All State teams?

Attack:
Kelly-Sals
Pettit-TH
Mangani-St Marks
Benson-Cape
Mids:
Giampetro-Sals
Reeder-Sals
Beatson-Arch
Carney-Friends
Poles:
Tracy-Friends
Friebott-Sals
Togo-TH
Cowan-Sals
Goalie:
Kern-Sals
Magness-St Marks
Russell-Arch
Specialist:
Boyden-TH

Sorry if I mis spell his name but Graham Siefert from Salies deserves first team consideration as well.

How about Sallies stating line up as first team, their JV as second team and their frosh as third team? I mean does any other school really play lacrosse?

I may under-rate or over-rate a player here and there so my apologies ahead of time. Clearly Sallies has many dominant players worthy of first-team consideration, much to other teams' chagrin. They will dominate the all-state listings, as they deserve to.

However, there are a number of players across the state who are just as good, if not better, than the Sallies starters. There aren't many, but they are out there.

Here's a breakdown of these dominant players by each position, divided into Sallies players and non-Sallies players.

Dominant Players:

Attack: Sallies- Jason Kelly
Non-Sallies- Andrew Pettit (THS), Hunter Schaeffer (CR), Sean Kirkpatrick (Friends)

Midfield: Sallies- Troy Reeder, Sean Giampietro, Graham Seuffert, Craig Zebrowski
Non-Sallies: Sam Carney, Will Mette

Defense: Sallies- Chase Cowan, Freddy Freibott
Non-Sallies: Brett Tracy, Thomas Ott, James Togo

Goalies: Sallies- Ryan Kern
Non-Sallies- Davis Russell (Archmere)

Excellent Players:

Attack: Sallies- Sam Fink, Bailey Martin
Non-Sallies- Ryan Messick (Tatnall), Blake Mann (Cape), Ben Hanson (Friends), Luke Benson (Cape), Colin Duffy (Archmere), Joey Giannaras (St. Marks), Morgan Madonna (St. Marks), James Magnani (St. Marks), Matt Higgins (DMA), Todd Keen (Cape), Brett Schmidt (CR)

Midfield: Sallies-
Non-Sallies- Ryan Beatson (Archmere), Jake Walsh (St. Marks), Brett Hinkcley (THS), Nate Gemmato (DMA), Kevin Louie (Concord), Thomas Lengel (Brandywine), Ryan Yursha *shortstick d-middie (St. Andrews), Chris Corsi (Archmere)

Defense: Sallies- Spenser Urban, Zach Kelly
Non-Sallies: Kevin Sheahan (CR), Jackson Banbury (THS), Nick Papa (St. Marks), Michael Adams (St. Marks), David Lui (A.I.), Logan Matthews (Cape), Alex Willin (Archmere)

Goalie: Sallies-
Non-Sallies: Alex Manges (St. Marks), Max Davis (Friends), Ryan Montgomery (Tatnall)

I'm sure that I missed a couple here and there so add in anyone you have in mind.

The main trend I see is that Delaware is very weak at the midfield, while Sallies has one of the strongest midfield lines that the state has ever seen. Not to say the other units of Sallies are bad, I just think that their midfield offers the strongest advantage over any other teams. There are a few attackmen across the state that could see time in the Sallies rotation that I mentioned amongst the dominant players, the best being Andrew Pettit (only a sophmore). The same can be said for a handful of defenders, namely Brett Tracy. The best goalie in the state is either Russell or Kern in my opinion. Manges has also been impressive, but he would be nothing without the solid St. Marks defense in front of him. Max Davis is strong, but is having a down year overall.

Lots of names and schools mentioned I'm sure all deserving. I'm sure someone from the Henlopen South could make one of those list.Polytech is having a pretty good year as is upstart Indian River, and Delmar..

I know that they're all having strong years. Unfortunately I don't really know enough about their players to put them up here. I don't think that they have anyone that I would put in my "dominant players" category.

Agree with most of your predictions but would not put Togo in the "dominant" category. He's a very good player, a Soph, and has not matured to the highest level - maybe next year. You're hard pressed not to include Kelly as part of that group. The Sals defense, in my estimation, is the best unit the state has seen.

I can agree with that. I think Togo is very good, but can be cocky. That cockiness can cost him sometimes. Kelly is also a very athletic and fundamentally sound pole.

This is shocking but accurate. Wow good for him but I don't think you can earn all-state off of one big win. He's a solid keeper but it's tough for him to compete with the goalkeeping talent across the state this year.

Todd Keen had a monster game against Tower Hill. And the stock of St. Marks went down when Sallies smoked them worse than Archmere which surprised me as I thought St. Marks was the better team. One kid I missed was Ryan Mquaide, a pole for Dover. Ben hanson was impressive all year, and Dan Erlichman (sp?) and Davis Russel from Archmere really impressed me against Sallies. Graham Seuffert is very good, but I don't think he's earned first team this year. That being said he should get at least 2nd or 3rd. Craig Zebrowski is also a very underrated player in the Sallies Midfield. Ryan kern is definitely a top 3 goalie in the state, but it's tough to tell just how good he is just because his defense is so much better than the defenses of Russel and Manges, not to mention everybody else's.

For a diamonds in the rough, there's David Lu and Chris Daley at A.I., Kevin Louie at Concord (10 points in a huge win for them over A.I.), Matt Higgins and Nate Gemmato at DMA, Ryan Messick and Ryan Montgomery at Tatnall, and Connor Ott at Polytech.

The player of the year candidate should definitely be Sean Giampietro. I can't think of too many players across the state that could challenge him for the honor, unless their teams pull off a miracle and beat Sallies in the playoffs. Other options could be Chase Cowan, Troy Reeder, and Brett Tracy.

These are stretches but you could also go Pettit at THS, Kirkpatrick at Friends, James Mangani at St. Marks, Russell at Archmere, Hunter Schaeffer at CR, and Todd Keen at Cape. I don't think any of these guys have a great Chance at it unless their teams win the championship, but I do think that they're the best players on their respective teams.

Just because someone is the best on their lesser team they should not be placed above a better player on a great team. Players should be compared against each other regardless of their team. otherwise an unfair advantage goes to being on a worse team. Not sure Giampietro is the shoe in he seemed to be last year.

This All-State stuff is usually just politics and good pr. You can be a mediocre player and have a good supporting cast and shine like the best player in the league. Then you can be the best player in the league and have no one on your team that even knows how to spell Lacrosse and you get third team all state. It is a shame but that is the way it is. Take away a Pro Quarter Back's receivers and all of a sudden he has forgotten how to throw.

Heresathought - I think you're underestimating Giapietro's contributions this year. He had a phenomenal year and, in my opinion, has become an even better player as a result of the pressure he faced. Every team - including the better out of state teams - had is number. He was covered every step by the best players on the opposing team - often doubled. As a result, he was forced to become a playmaker rather than a goal scorer. He sees the field extremely well, has great stick skills and can easily move the ball where he wants it. This year he moved it into the sticks of his team mates more than into the goal. These improved skills will make him even more important as he heads off to college. Definitely Player of the Year in my book.

I do agree with your points re: All State selections. Selections should be based on performance.

My first team picks would be as follows

Attack
Pettit Tower Hill
Benson Cape
Schaeffer CR

Mids
Giampietro Sals
Zebrowski Sals
Mette Tower Hill
Reeder Sals

Def
Cowan Sals
Freibot Sals
Sheehan CR

Goalie
Manges St Marks

While Benson is doing well, I wouldn't say he's having a first-team type of year. Sheahan is a very good defender, but he isn't nearly as good as Brett Tracy.

Cape is the #2 team in Delaware and Benson leads the team in points according to online stats - seems like first-team credentials to me. Tracy may be the best LSM in the state, but there are better close defensemen. Top players on top teams (the best of the best) should always be considered ahead of top players on lesser teams when it comes to All-State selections.

Your comment made me take a closer look. Here's what I found on the web for Benson in big games vs. nationally ranked and Delaware teams so far:

Cape has played 8 of the 10 top seeds in Delaware with DMA as the only one of the top 10 they have not played. Cape has also played two LaxPower National Top 50's (St. Paul's #32 and Salesianum #38) and #109 Severn School. In the 10 big games Benson has averaged 2.2 points per game which amounted to 20% of Cape's points in those games. As I noted in a previous post, the biggest justification for Benson as an All-State first-teamer at this time is that he is the point leader (not just goals) on the #2 team which has several very good offensive players.

Thats great research, and yeah I'll definitely give him credit since he is consistently drawing the opposition's best pole. However I look at other players on his team, and other attackmen across the state, who are just as good as him.

Here is my first team all state prediction-

Attack: Benson, Cape. J. Kelly, Sals. Kirkpatrick, Friends.
Midfield: Giampietro, Sals (POY). T. Reeder, Sals. Mette, TH.
Sp.: Freibott, Sals. (LSM)
Defense: Tracy, Friends. Sheahan, CR. Cowan, Sals.
Goal: Kern, Sals.

Notables for other All State Spots
Attack: Fink, Sals. Schaeffer, CR. Pettit, TH. Mangani, St. Marks. Martin, Sals. Mann, Cape. Madonna, St. Marks.
Midfield: Carney, Friends. Zebrowski, Sals. Seuffert, Sals. Hayward, CR. Aloe, CR. Keen, Cape. Giannaris, St. Marks.
Sp.: McQuaide, Dover (LSM). C. Reeder, Sals (FO). Boyden, TH (FO).
Defense: Z. Kelly, Sals. Ott, Cape. Urban, Sals. Togo, TH. Adams, St. Marks. Papa, St. Marks.
Goal: Manges, St. Marks. Russell, Archmere. Davis, Friends. Montgomery, Tatnall. Bailey, Polytech.

Im sure I missed some guys but these are surely most of the state's top players
