#22 Caesar Rodney (10-6) @ #11 Middletown (10-8). These two did not play this year.
CR had the wheels fall off at the end of the season. They started 9-1 !!! but finished with four straight losses to Cape, Poly, Smyrna and IR where they were outscored 50-17. They ended up 4-5 against the other playoff teams. They had some weird games. They lost to Hodgson 12-11 but beat Tech 23-15. They got beat 20-5 by IR to end the season. They scored 164 runs this year in 16 games but also allowed 104 runs. They hit 8 homers. This is CR’s 30th appearance in the state tourney…only 3 other teams (St Marks 37, Sallies 43 and Newark 31) have made it to the post season more. CR has a 30-28 record in the post season (only 4 teams have played more post season games than CR). CR has only 1 title though in 1975. CR hasn’t made it to the tourney since 2014. CR has only faced Mtown once in the post season all the way in 1974…a losing effort.
Middletown though 10-8, has had quite the disappointing season. They were a preseason favorite and seemed to have some of the deepest pitching in the state. They do have some deep pitching they just can’t seem to score and win games. Their start was very promising, they were 3-0 with wins over DMA and Concord. They had two close losses to good teams Cape (4-2) and St G (5-3). No shame there. They won a runs fest with RLCA 11-6…then blanked Smyrna 4-0. They lost another close one to WP 3-1. They slide by Dover 4-2, Newark 5-4 and plaster Mt P 11-1. A close loss to rival Appo 9-7, followed up with a crushing of Conrad 14-0. Since then they have had 4 close losses to Hodgson (3-2), St Marks (3-2), St E (2-0) and Caravel (4-2). They are 4-7 against the other playoff teams this year. Mtown is averaging 5 runs per game and do have 9 dingers. They have allowed under 3 runs per game with good pitching from Dunn and Wooten. This is Mtown’s 25th appearance in the state tourney. They are 23-24. They have been to 3 championships and lost all three.
Prediction: CR seems to have fallen apart. Mtown has come up short in big games this year but they are still a dominant team, especially on the mound. If Mtown can get some runs on the board, they have the pitching to hold CR down.
