Dover, Del. (Aug. 6, 2018) --- Preseason camp is underway for the 2018 Delaware State women’s volleyball team. The Hornets begin their new season on Aug. 24 against Missouri in the James Madison Invitational. DSU’s home opener is Sep. 5 against American University. The Hornets’ MEAC North opener is Sep. 28 at home vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore.

DELAWARE STATE UNIVERSITY 2018 VOLLEYBALL OUTLOOK
Delaware State is hoping a “youth movement” will spark a turnaround for its volleyball program. The Hornets have added seven talented freshmen to a returning mix of three sophomores, a redshirt junior and just one senior in their quest to return the program to respectability in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this season.

The DSU newcomers are expected to have plenty of opportunities to prove themselves following the graduation of five seniors from the Hornets’ 2017 squad.

Heading the list of returning players are outside hitters Sydney Armbrister (r-jr.; Miami Shores, Fla,.) and Mayah Ngundam (So.; Bowie, Md.), along with middle blocker Kiera Holtzclaw (so; Atlanta, Ga.).

Armbrister was second on the Hornets, and tops among returning players, in kills at 1.69 per set (164 total) in 2017. Among the team’s most consistent players, she tallied at least three kills in each match last season, including a high of 10 in two contests.

Ngundam was third on the team with 131 kills (1.42 per set) as a true freshman in 2017. She also ranked third on the Hornets with 46 blocks (four solo) a year ago.

Holtzclaw was DSU’s leader with 55 blocks (five solo) as a first-year player in 2017. In addition, she was fifth on the team, and third among returning players, with 99 blocks last season (1.25 per set). Her .202 attack percentage was tops on the ’17 squad.

Leimaluhia Taula
(Sr.; West Jordan, Utah), the Hornets’ lone senior, is the team’s top returning defender. She tallied 192 digs (2.0 per set) to rank second on the squad after transferring from New Mexico Military Academy prior to last season. Taula also recorded 14 services aces to rank fourth on the team a year ago.

Delaware State’s list of 2018 newcomers consists to three outside hitters, two setters and a defensive specialist.

Highly-regarded newcomer Devin Ruble (fr.; OH, 6-1; La Plata, Md.) joins the team this season after a stellar high school career. A former Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Year, Ruble helped lead Cobbs Island High School to two state championships and a second place finish in her four varsity seasons.

Two other former Maryland high school standouts are also new to the Hornets this season.

Nia Scott (fr.; Libero; 5-7; Bowie, Md.) was a highly touted defensive specialist and team MVP during her senior year at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, where she helped lead the team to county and regional championships.

Sydney Sheppard (fr.; S; 5-9; Glen Burnie, Md.) will battle for the starting setter spot for the Hornets this season. She received All-America recognition after leading Arundel High to county championships during junior and senior seasons. She also competed for some of the area’s tops Club/AAU programs.

Milexa Cardona
(fr.; S; 5-8; Kissimmee, Fla) also brings extensive AAU/Club experience to the Hornets this year. She was a member of two national championship teams and a national runner-up squad in the travel circuit.

Caroline Rakoski (fr.; OH; 6-1; Atlanta, Ga.) brings a reputation as a solid hitter to the Hornets. She helped lead St. Pius X to three state final four appearances and selected as the team’s Best Offensive Player after leading the squad in kills during her senior season.

Alondra Ramos (fr; OH; 5-10; Orlando, Fla.) spent more than a decade competing for some of Florida’s top Club/AAU teams before signing on with the Hornets.

Delaware State will open the 2018 on the road in the James Madison (Va.) Tournament on Aug. 24. The Hornets will also compete in tournaments hosted by St. Francis Brooklyn, North Carolina A&T and Lafayette before beginning MEAC North play against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Sep. 28.

DSU ANNOUNCES WOMEN'S GOLF LEADERSHIP CHANGE
Courtesy DSU Athletic Media Relations
Fri, September 14, 2018
Dover, Del. (Sep. 14, 2018) --- Delaware State University Director of Athletics Dr. D. Scott Gines has announced the appointment of Richard “Rick” McCall as the new head coach of the Hornets’ women’s golf team. McCall replaces Scott Thornton, who has led the program since its inception in 2012.

McCall, who served two legendary stints as head men’s coach at Wesley College, was most recently head golf instructor at Wild Quail Golf and Country Club in Wyoming, Del.

While at Wesley College, he led the school to 12 conference championships, six NCAA top-25 finishes, including a second place showing in 2003. He also produced the Wolverines’ only national championship, coaching Chris Noll to the individual national title in 2002.

McCall’s coaching career also includes nine conference Coach-of-the-Year awards, three Mid-Atlantic Coach-of-the-Year awards and one NCAA Division III Coach-of-the-Year honor. He guided the Wolverines to 10 straight conference championships from 1999 to 2008 and coached 10 individual conference champions during his tenure.

In addition, McCall has been honored with the Delaware State Golf Association Annual Award (1989), Pat Knight Award for lifetime contribution to junior golf (1993), and two Philadelphia PGA Junior Golf Awards (1995,1996).

McCall has also served as Head Golf Instructor at McCall Cecchett Academy (1999-2007) and was Head Golf Professional at Maple Dale Golf and Country Club in Dover, Del., from 1965 to 2004. A graduate of the University of North Carolina, he was inducted into the Wesley College Athletics Hall-of-Fame in 2015.

“Delaware State is extremely grateful that a coach and teacher of Rick McCall’s legendary status has accepted the offer to lead our women’s golf program,” said Gines. “There’s no doubt our team will greatly benefit from his years of experience and wisdom.”

Thornton left his Delaware State post to accept a position as Director of Tennis and Tennis Center Manager for the City of Orlando, Fla.

His accomplishments with the Hornets include a third place showing at the 29th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship in 2015, second place finishes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Showcase each year the team competed in the event and four all-conference honorees.

Earlier this month, the Women’s Golf Coaches Association honored the Hornets as the Division I recipient of the annual Mark Laesch Award for year-to-year adjusted stroke average per individual per round. Delaware State posted an improvement of 21.5 strokes from the 2016-17 to 2017-18 seasons.

In addition, Delaware State’s Aisha Peete was selected as a 2014 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine (formerly Black Issues in Higher Education) during Thornton’s tenure with the Hornets. The prestigious award was created in 1992 to recognize high school and collegiate student-athletes who emulate the legacy of the late Arthur Ashe, the African-American tennis great, civil rights leader and humanitarian.

“On behalf of the Delaware State University family, I applaud coach Thornton for his leadership, direction and vision while serving as DSU’s inaugural Head Women’s Golf Coach and his hard work in the successful launch of the program,” said Gines. “I extend best wishes to Scott in his exciting new career opportunity.”

Delaware Takes Down Bryant in Stony Brook Invitational Opener, 3-2

Bracken paced the match with 25 kills

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Behind 25 kills from junior Cailey Bracken, the University of Delaware volleyball team took down Bryant, 3-2 (25-15, 23-25, 29-31, 25-21, 15-11), inside Pritchard Gymnasium on the campus of Stony Brook University Friday afternoon. With the win, UD improves to 6-4 overall while Bryant dropped to 8-5 this season.

“I’m really proud of the effort in the end,” head coach Sara Matthews said. “We had a really big lead in the third set and ended up losing it. They did a good job of bouncing back and in sets four and five. Brooke (Robertson) was incredible. I’m proud of her effort. She was putting balls away for us and hit for a really high clip. She did a great job.”

Bracken’s 25 kills was a season high and match high, while senior Brooke Robertson posted 19 kills on a season-best .429 attacking clip. Junior Maria Bellinger also hit double-digit terminations with 12 of her own. In total, 10 Blue Hens recorded at least one kill today, with sophomore Julia Hayes recording six. Junior libero Andie Hanus led the match with 23 digs. After Roberts’ 10, freshman Samantha Davis posted 7 while Bellinger added six scoops to her 12 kills. Robertson capped her quality day with five digs of her own, and 10 Blue Hens recorded at least one scoop. Hanus’ now has reached 20 or more scoops in five matches this season.

Neuer has been selected as the 2018-19 MEAC Preseason Bowler-of-the-Year, in voting by league head coaches and sports information representatives announced today.

Joining Neuer on the 2018-19 Preseason All-MEAC Team are Ana Olaya and Cameron Strombeck of defending conference champ North Carolina A&T, Alexandra Hernandez of Maryland-Eastern Shore and Taylor Russell of Alabama Birmingham, which has joined the MEAC, along with Monmouth University, as an associate members for bowling.

Neuer was the 2017-18 MEAC Bowler-of-the-Year and All-MEAC First Team selection after leading Delaware State to its second straight MEAC North Championship. Subject: DELAWARE FOOTBALL: Blue Hens Take Down Richmond, 43-28, For Rocco’s 100th Win
To:

RICHMOND, Va. – All week long, the University of Delaware football program preached about taking the ball away from their opponents.

Mission Accomplished.

The Blue Hens forced six turnovers to spark a 43-28 win over the University of Richmond on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium. The victory gives Head Coach Danny Rocco his 100th career victory.

Junior Pat Kehoe threw for 291 yards on 11-of-20 passing with two TDs, while senior Joe Walker had his second career 100-yard receiving game, finishing with 113 on the day.

Senior Kani Kane rushed for two scores, while classmates Vinny Papale and Charles Scarff both caught TD passes on the afternoon.

Defensively, Nasir Adderley had two interceptions to lead a swarming defensive unit, which include a fumble return for a TD by sophomore Colby Reeder in the first quarter of the contest.

The Blue Hens jumped all over the Spiders to start the contest, forcing a safety on a punt return, followed by a four-play, 59-yard TD drive, followed on the ensuing play by Reeder’s TD return to quickly jump out 16-0 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first quarter.

Richmond would answer with a score and a field goal, but a 58-yard TD connection between Papale and Kehoe would send Delaware into halftime with a comfortable 33-10 cushion.

The lead would balloon to 43-10 with another Kane TD with less than a minute to play in the fourth quarter.

Richmond would score twice in the fourth quarter, but interceptions by Adderley and Ray Jones in the final 10 minutes of the contest helped seal the victory.

Quotable

“I’m incredibly proud of my team for how they fought today and had my back,” Rocco said. “We talked all week about taking the ball away and we were able to do just that. We did a lot of good things today offensively and some good things defensively, but this is just a stepping stone for us. We have to keep on getting better each week.”

Up Next

The Blue Hens return home next week to host 9th-ranked Elon at Delaware Stadium. The Phoenix are coming off an upset win at #2 JMU. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.

After the Hornets lost a yard in the next three plays, Romo-Martinez nailed his 49-yard field goal to cut North Carolina A&T’s lead to 20-6 with 3:07 to go before halftime. The kick is tied for the third longest field goal in DSU history. The school record is 54 by Jared Keating vs. Norfolk State in 2003.

DSU had one more first half possession, but Romo-Martinez came up just short on a 50-yard field goal attempt when the ball hit the cross bar on the final play of the second quarter.

The Aggies scored two third quarter touchdowns, including Raynard’s second score on a five-yard run, to put the game away.

North Carolina A&T outgained Delaware State 356-248. The well-balanced Aggies rushed for 182 yards and passed for 174. The Hornets gained 140 yards on the ground and 108 by the pass.

Maria Bellinger’s Career High Pushes Delaware to 3-2 Win over Elon

Bellinger posted 34 kills

ELON, N.C. – Behind a career-high from junior Maria Bellinger, the Delaware volleyball team took home a 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13) win over Elon for the team’s first Colonial Athletic Association win of the year. The Blue Hens improved to 7-11 and 1-5 in the CAA while Elon dropped to 8-9 and 0-6 in the league.

“It was a great team win by us today,” head coach Sara Matthews said. “We have talked a lot about what our identity is and how we need to play like ourselves with energy and intensity. The group did a much better job of maintaining that. I thought Courtnie (Roberts) did a great job distributing the ball. Maria (Bellinger) was obviously huge and she has really expanded our tool box. Bailey (Pearlman) came up so big for us in key moments. Finally, Andie (Hanus) was just exceptional in the back row anchoring our defense. Having 34 digs and 11 assists is fantastic. We are going to enjoy this feeling and get back after it preparing for next weekend.”

Bellinger posted a career-best 34 kills on 68 swings. She was absolutely scorching today with a .397 attacking clip. With the match tied at 13-13 in the fifth set, she produced the final two kills of the set to win the match.

Three Blue Hens would hit double-digit kills as junior Cailey Bracken and junior Bailey Pearlman added 15 terminations each. Senior Brooke Robertson produced eight of her own while sophomore Courtnie Roberts had two and Julia Hayes had one.

Junior Andie Hanus was spectacular on the back line with 34 digs today, which was her season-high. Bracken posted her 10th double-double of the year after adding 10 digs to her 15 kills. Roberts had her ninth double-double of the year with 12 digs added to her 47 assists.

Roberts’ 47 helpers was a match-high and her best in CAA play this season. She directed the offense to a .278 hitting percentage and 75 kills.
