Dover, Del. (Oct. 15, 2018) --- Jade Jamison scored her school record-tying sixth goal the season with 53 seconds to give Delaware State a 2-1 victory over Canisius in a women’s soccer contest at Alumni Stadium this afternoon. The score was 1-1 when DSU’s Mary O’Conner lofted a free kick about 40 yards from the net. Jamison ran to the post from the right of Canisius goal keeper Alana Rossi and booted the ball into the net for the go-ahead score, setting off a celebration with her teammates on the field and along the Hornet bench.

Jamison is now tied with Chelsea Boursiquot for most goals in a season in team history. Boursiquot accomplished the feat in 2014.

The Hornets and Golden Griffins were scoreless at the half as neither team could generate much offense in the opening 45 minutes.

Canisius broke the ice with a goal in the 54th minute. Hannah Morpurgo scored from close range off a perfect cross from Madeline Beaulieu to put the Griffs on the board first.

Delaware State needed a little more than 16 minutes to tie the match. Alexa Gibbs scored her second goal of the season from up close off a feed from Katrina Silva in the 70th minute to even the score.

The match appeared head for overtime before the late heroics by O’Conner and Jamison.

The victory was Delaware State’s first after trailing in a match this season. The Hornets improved to 3-10-2, while Canisius fell to 4-7-4 this season.

DSU will play its final home match of the season on Wed. (Oct. 17) against Yale. The contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. The Hornets will close out the season on the road at Wagner (Oct. 19), Penn (Oct. 23) and Brown (Oct. 30).

Wed, October 17, 2018
Dover, Del. (Oct. 17, 2018) --- Jade Jamison’s school-record seventh goal of the season was not enough to prevent Delaware State from a 6-2 women’s soccer loss to Yale in the Hornets’ 2018 home finale at Alumni Stadium this evening. Jamison, a junior, scored her record-setting goal in the 62nd minute to pull the Hornets’ to within 4-2 in the contest. The goal was set up by a long pass from Alyssa Coustenis, which Jamison outran two Yale defenders to retrieve. After winning the race for the ball, Jamison fired a shot from about 15 yards away past Bulldog goal keeper Maritza Grillo for the record score. Delaware State’s previous high for goals in a season was six by Chelsea Boursiquot in 2014.

Yale led 4-0 in the match before Delaware State scored back-to-back second period goals to make things interesting.

Aerial Chavarin had two goals and two assists, while four others tallied a goal each to lead the Bulldogs to their second straight win. Yale’s Sarah Jordan was credited with two assists in the contest.

Chavarin assisted on the first goal of the match by Ciara Ostrander to give Yale a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.

The Hornets appeared to tie the match later in the opening period but an apparent goal in an open net by Savannah Ay (fr.) off a feed from Jamison was denied due to an offsides call.

The Bulldogs scored three more first period goals, two by Chavarin, to lead 4-0 at the half.

Delaware State finally got on the board when Ay officially scored off a feed from Braxton Clark (jr.) in the 57th minute to cut Yale’s lead to 4-1. The goal was the fifth of the season for Ay, which is the most by a Hornet freshman and tied for third best in team history.

Jamison’s score less than five minutes later cut the DSU deficit to two.

The Bulldogs scored insurance goals in the 72nd and 83rd minutes to seal the win.

The match also marked the final home contest for Delaware State seniors Kayleigh Leschinski, Jenna Wallace, Samantha Bahr and Leslie Fazio,

The Hornets will close out their 2018 season with three road matches, beginning with a visit to Wagner on Friday (Oct. 19) at 7 p.m.
