SUBJECT: Late Game Heroics Earn Wilmington Baseball Opening Day Sweep over Southern Connecticut State and Molloy

DATE: February 24, 2017
djl

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - Down to their final at-bat against Molloy, the Wilmington University baseball team put up four runs to secure the second of two wins on Opening Day on Friday, defeating Southern Connecticut State, 14-4, before coming back to take down Molloy, 6-3, at the Polo Grounds at the Ripken Experience.

Tied 3-3 with the bases empty and two outs in the top of the ninth, the Wildcats (2-0) loaded the bases before Rocky Ferrier cleared them to give the Wildcats the come-from-behind victory over Molloy and earn the Friday sweep.

In most baseball scenarios to start the season, the pitching always seems to be ahead of the curve compared to the bats, but that wasn’t the case in the season opener for the Wildcats against Southern Connecticut. The bats started hot and collected 22 hits in the game, crossing the plate 14 times.

Ferrier started the day with a solid 4-for-5 performance at the plate against SCSU while Kendall Small matched him with a 4-for-6 game. Max Carney was right behind the duo by going 3-for-4, including launching a home run to right field in his first plate appearance of the season. Regan Hidalgo and Jesse Long also collected multiple hits for the Wildcats, going 2-for-6 with a team leading three RBI and 2-for-5, respectively.

Carney’s homer opened the scoring in the top of the second but it was Hidalgo’s two-run single to right in the fourth that broke the 1-1 tie. The Wildcats never looked back. Logan Gilbert collected an RBI single in his first collegiate at-bat in the fifth, putting the Wildcats up, 6-1. Two more runs came across on an error in the eighth inning before Small put the Wildcats up 9-1 with an RBI single back up the middle.

The Owls got to reliever Nick Grant in the bottom of the eighth, scoring an unearned run, but the transfer escaped without further damage to finish off his first appearance as a Wildcat.

The Wildcats put the game away in the top of the ninth, as Kyle Fries doubles in Gilbert before Joey Cautillo collected his first collegiate hit and RBI with a two-run single. The Wildcats capped the scoring with two more runs on an error, started by a single through the right side by Small. Micky Foytik came on for his first collegiate appearance and allowed a two-out unearned run, but closed the door on the season opening victory.

Zach Rumford started the game and pitched four strong, allowing five hits and one run while striking out four batters before turning it over to Grant. Grant picked up the win with four innings on the mound, striking out six while allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits.

The Wildcats got out to the early lead against Molloy as well, as an error brought in Ferrier to open the scoring in the third inning. Molloy tied the game with a single in the fifth off starter Chuck Delagol before taking the lead with two runs in the seventh off reliever John Hetterman.

The comeback started in the eighth for the Wildcats, as they put runners on second and third with no outs in the inning. Gilbert scored on a wild pitch, but Jesse Long was stranded at third base as the Lions came up with three straight outs, keeping the lead 3-2.

Noah Latshaw came on to relieve Zach Frederick and stranded a runner at third base to end the eighth, giving the Wildcats a chance.

Nick Macey started the ninth with a leadoff walk before Small singled back up the middle to put runners on first and third. Hidalgo grounded into a 6-4-3- double play, but the tying run came home from third on the play.

With the bases empty and two outs in the inning, Carney walked to be the spark and Gilbert and Long followed suit with two more base on balls. Ferrier stepped in and doubled to right field, chasing all three runners home in the process. Latshaw gave up a one out walk in the ninth, but got two ground balls to end the game and pick up the win.

Delagol went five while allowing one run on five hits, but striking out three batters. Hetterman also struck out three batters in his 1.2 innings of work while Frederick allowed just one hit in his 1.0 inning.

The Wildcats opening weekend in Myrtle Beach continues with a contest against last season’s East Regional Champion and nationally ranked Franklin Pierce. First pitch is slated for 10:30 a.m.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Baseball ends Myrtle Beach Trip with Loss to New Haven, 7-3

DATE: February 26, 2017

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - Missed opportunities loomed large for the Wilmington University baseball team as it fell to New Haven, 7-3, on the final day of the Northeast Challenge at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.

The Wildcats (2-2) collected nine hits in the game but left 11 runners on bases, while New Haven (4-0) was able to convert on its chances, collecting nine hits as well but only leaving five runners on base.

The Chargers got on the board first with a run in the top of the second inning before adding two more in the top of the third on an RBI single and a failed pickoff attempt at third base.

The Wildcats were able to get back into the game in the home half of the third inning with a pair of two-out RBIs. Logan Gilbert started the inning with a lead off double, but he was still on second as two outs were recorded. Max Carney stepped in and singled to right, putting the Wildcats on the board as Gilbert came home. A hit by pitch loaded the bases and Nick Macey walked to bring in the second run of the inning to bring the Wildcats to within 3-2. But the Wildcats left the bases loaded as the Chargers were able to induce a foul out to end the inning.

A double and a walk started the fifth inning for the Chargers and a double to left brought in two more runs for New Haven. The Wildcats left two on in the sixth and had a chance in the seventh to get back in the ball game. Rocky Ferrier started the inning with a single followed by a walk and a Mike Annone infield single to load the bases without an out recorded.

But that was quickly erased as Frank Nigro sharply lined a pitch but right at the third baseman who made the catch and flipped it to second for the double play. Kendall Small than flew out to right to end the inning and the threat, keeping the game at 5-2.

Another double brought in a run for the Chargers in the top of the ninth before a throwing error settled the score at 7-2. The Wildcats late game comeback fell short in the bottom of the ninth, as they were only able to get one run despite collected three straight singles and had runners on first and second with one out. Annone brought in the inning’s run with a hot shot to center, scoring Ferrier.

Ferrier, Carney, Annone, and Gilbert collected two hits each for the Wildcats with Gilbert’s double being the only extra base hit.

Brad Scull took the loss while pitching into the fifth inning, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits. He struck out five batters while allowing two walks as well. Justin Mears made his Wildcats debut with four innings pitched, striking out three while only giving up two hits.

The Wildcats have a week off before returning to action with their annual trip to South Florida. They will return to the diamond on March 6 with a doubleheader against Stonehill on the campus of Lynn University.

Goldey-Beacom’s Tevin Thomas Named CACC Rookie of the Week

Freshman Tevin Thomas (Dover, DE/Dover) continued what has been an outstanding start to a promising career in being named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week a second straight week.

Thomas batted .455 (5-for-11) last week with four runs and two RBI over three games. He had two hits and an RBI in each of the first two games of Goldey-Beacom’s series with Queens (NY) and one in the finale to run his hitting streak to nine games.

With a hit in all nine games he has played this season, Thomas is batting .483 (14-for-29) that puts him eighth in the CACC. He also is tied for first with 14 hits and tied for sixth with seven RBI.

The award comes seven days after Thomas also was picked the league’s Player of the Week.

Goldey-Beacom is home Friday against 13th-ranked Mercyhurst for a noon doubleheader in Hockessin, DE.

CHARLESTON, S.C. - A two-run double by freshman Michael Diodato broke a 1-1 tie and sent the VMI Keydets to a 4-1, 12-inning victory over The Citadel Bulldogs in SoCon baseball action Saturday in Charleston, S.C.

VMI's Ryan Bennett had pitched out of two bases-loaded jams in the past three innings entering the 12th, and the Keydets (10-12, 1-1 SoCon) took advantage in that frame. Mason Adamson, who was making his first career start in left field, walked with one out and Ryan Smoot followed with a single.

Citadel's (8-15, 1-1) Thomas Byelick recovered to strike out Jordan Ebersole, but Diodato doubled to right center on a 0-2 pitch to score two runs and give the Keydets the lead for good. He would score on a throwing error later in the innings to account for the final margin.

Bennett (2-0) picked up the victory with his four innings of work. He stranded eight runners in those innings, as he walked three and allowed two hits, but was helped by his six strikeouts. In seven games this year, Bennett has two victories, more than the redshirt senior had in his entire Keydet career entering the season. Adamson struck out the side around two walks in the ninth for his third save, and Byelick (0-2) was the losing pitcher.

The Keydets struck first, as Peyton Maddox and Jake Huggins had back to back doubles in the second inning to put VMI up, 1-0. The run broke a streak of 22 consecutive scoreless innings by the VMI offense.

The Citadel countered in the third, but Matt Eagle pitched out of a bases loaded, one out situation as the Bulldogs left the bases loaded. That was the first of four times that the home team left the bases loaded in the game.

VMI, meanwhile, could not take advantage of a one-out double by Ryan Smoot in the fifth, and the Keydets also left two on in the ninth. Bennett then left runners stranded in scoring position all four of his innings of work, allowing Diodato to deliver the big hit offensively.

Neither starter figured in the decision, as Eagle was removed in the fourth inning after giving up four hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings. Citadel starter Will Abbott held the Keydets to four hits and one run over six innings.

Offensively, Diodato led the Keydets with his 2 for 5, two RBI day, while Clay Martin reached base five times in six plate appearances to pace the Bulldogs. The Citadel stranded 19 runners on base in the game.

VMI baseball will wrap up its series with The Citadel Sunday at 1 p.m.

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ- Monmouth Baseball swept the MAAC-opening series from Quinnipiac, scoring 21 runs in two games and pitching a shutout in the second contest to take all three from the Bobcats. MU compiled 38 runs on 36 hits in the three weekend games. In the opener, Monmouth jumped out to a 9-0 lead thanks to a seven-run second inning. Freshman Johnny Zega (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) got things going with a double in the gap to score a run, and after a run was walked in, Shaine Hughes (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) punched a two-run single through the middle. Dan Shea (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum) capped the inning by launching his team-leading fourth home run to right field, a three-run shot to make it 7-0.A pair of underclassmen added to the lead in the third, with sophomore Clay Koniencki (Schwenksville, PA/Malvern Prep) dropping a run-scoring single into left before freshman Danny Long (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) snuck a double inside the third base bag to score Koniencki.Kyle Ajjan (Chester Springs, PA/Downingtown East) did not see trouble until the fifth, when he allowed a leadoff home run to Brian Moskey. A pair of errors against MU allowed Quinnipiac to score four times in the inning, in addition to three Bobcat hits to cut it to 9-4. Joe Molettiere (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) came on and needed one pitch to end the fifth, and faced the minimum the rest of the way, including a double play to end the sixth. In game two, the Hawks again jumped out to a big lead, scoring three in the first on Pete Papcun’s (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) RBI double before Chris Gaetano (Madison Township, PA/Scranton Preparatory) homered to right, a two-run shot. That would be all sophomore Tyler Ksiazek (South Abington Township, PA/Abington Heights) would need on the mount, taking a no-hitter into the sixth and eventually allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts in seven shutout innings. The Hawks added a run on a fielder’s choice to lead 4-0 after two. MU broke it open in the fourth, scoring four times propelled by Papcun’s two-run single. Leading 8-0, Tom Jakubowski (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford/Long Island) singled in a run before Papcun let loose on a three-run home run to left that was well clear of the fence to make it 12-0.

Baseball Finishes Sweep at USC Upstate

Harris connects for three home runs

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (March 25, 2017) – Sophomore Jawuan Harris hit three home runs as Rutgers baseball finished off a sweep of USC Upstate with an 11-3 win in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader at Harley Park. The Scarlet Knights (9-14) previously won in the series by the scores of 10-7 and 5-1.

GAME ONE RECAP: BIG INNINGS PROPEL RUTGERS BASEBALL

It marked the first three-game series sweep for RU since taking down USF at home in 2014, with the last road sweep at Villanova in 2013. Rutgers last took both ends of a doubleheader on May 11, 2013 versus Georgetown.

For Harris, the leadoff hitter mashed long balls in the first, third and fifth innings to become the first Scarlet Knight to take a round trip three times in a game since Nick Cerulo in 2002 at Columbia. He now has a team-best seven home runs on the season.

Senior Mike Carter added two hits for his 12th multiple-hit game of the year, while sophomore Mike Martinez had two singles to finish the doubleheader with five hits. Junior Milo Freeman contributed two hits and senior Tom Marcinczyk reached three times on two walks and a single. Rutgers tallied 21 runs on 29 hits for the doubleheader.

On the mound, senior Gaby Rosa (3-1) struck out five in a five-inning start for his 10th career victory. The right-hander permitted just one run in the outing. Freshman Eric Reardon, sophomore Kevin Romero and freshman Kyle Gerace all worked a scoreless frame of relief.

The Scarlet Knights jumped out quickly with six run in the first inning. Harris started the outburst with a solo home run on the second pitch of the game. Carter and Marcinczyk both followed with walks to bring up senior Christian Campbell, who laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away to permit two to score. After the first out, Martinez grounded a ball to first base to chase home Campbell. Junior Chris Folinusz kept it going with a single, with sophomore Carmen Sclafani hitting an RBI triple and freshman Kevin Welsh lacing a run-scoring double to cap the rally.

In the second, Carter led off with a double and Campbell found space in the outfield for a double that put two in scoring positon. Freeman would then single to third base for an RBI and Martinez singled to make it 8-0.

Harris would connect on his second solo big fly in the third inning and would clear the left-center scoreboard in the fifth to finish with four RBIs.

Connor Campbell (1-2) took the loss for the Spartans (12-14), who scores one in the fifth and two in the ninth. J.J. Shimko drew a game-high three walks, but the home team stranded 14 on base.

Rutgers will next return to New Jersey for a midweek home-and-home series against Monmouth, starting Tuesday on the road. The Scarlet Knights will then stay home to start Big Ten against Maryland at Bainton Field over the weekend.

Row’s Walk-Off Single Lifts Gamecocks to 6-5 Win over Alabama

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Junior infielder Justin Row’s walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted fourth ranked South Carolina to a 6-5 win on Saturday afternoon at Founders Park. The Gamecocks improve to 16-6 and 4-1 in the SEC with Alabama now 12-11 and 1-4 in league play.

Trailing 5-4 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the Gamecocks rallied to tie it against Alabama reliever Davis Vainer. Jonah Bride would lead off with a walk and with two outs advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Carolina would then summon Danny Blair off the bench to run for Bride and the sophomore outfielder would score the tying run on a pair of wild pitches from Vainer.

With the score deadlocked at 5-5 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Hunter Taylor led off with a walk to give the Gamecocks a runner on first with no outs. LT Tolbert put runners on first and second then with a base hit to left field on a 1-2 pitch from Vainer. After a wild pitch moved both runners up, TJ Hopkins drew a one-out walk to load the bases and set the stage for Justin Row. On a 2-0 pitch, Row belted a liner to left out of the reach of Alabama outfielder Logan Carey for a RBI single to set off the celebration at Founders Park.

Senior left-hander Josh Reagan picked up his third win of the season and is now 3-0 on the season. He gave three runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of relief. Junior right-hander Wil Crowe threw 6.1 innings with two runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in no-decision for Carolina. Alabama’s freshman right-hander Davis Vainer suffered the loss to drop to 0-2 on the year. He gave up two runs on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work.

South Carolina went ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Chris Cullen led off with a single up the middle and advanced to third on an error by Chandler Avant on a hit from Jacob Olson. Hunter Taylor drove Cullen in with a single to right and LT Tolbert loaded the bases with a bunt down the first base line. With the bases loaded and no outs, Madison Stokes drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, scampering down the line to avoid the double play. TJ Hopkins lifted a sac fly to left to score Taylor to give the Gamecocks a three-run lead.

Carolina increased the lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, thanks to singles by Olson and Tolbert and a walk by Stokes, TJ Hopkins knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice.

Alabama responded in the top of the seventh with a one-run single by Hunter Alexander and a sac fly by Connor Short to cut the Gamecocks’ lead in half. The Crimson Tide added a run in the top of the eighth after Avant and Kyle Kaufman each singled to led off the inning and Cody Henry lifted a sac fly to bring Alabama within one run.

A solo homer to right by Chandler Taylor in the top of the ninth tied the game at 4-4. With runners on first and third and no outs, the Crimson Tide would take a 5-4 lead on a double play ball off the bat of Chandler Avant.

GAME CHANGER
Justin Row’s walk-off single to right field lifted the Gamecocks to the win over Alabama to even the series.

KEY STAT
Seven of the nine Gamecock starters recorded at least one hit, with LT Tolbert leading South Carolina at the plate after going 3-for-5 with three singles.

NOTABLES
• Matt Williams has safely reached base in 20 consecutive games this season. He went 1-for-3 with a walk.
• Saturday’s sellout crowd (8,242) is the fourth of the season and 52nd of all time.
• LT Tolbert tied a career-high three hits. He has had five three-hit games in his career and two games this season with three hits, his most recent being February 28 vs. Appalachian State.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Chad Holbrook
"It’s typical of this league. Every team is so evenly matched it comes down to a play here, a play there. Our kids played hard. We didn’t necessarily play well all the time, offensively we are making our pitchers be a little bit perfect right now. I’m disappointed in a few opportunities. But that being said we found a way to win a huge game, we’ll live to fight another day. I can’t say enough for Justin Row. The kid is a joy to have in the dugout, he’s a joy to have on the field, but he’s a joy to have in the dugout too when he’s not playing. He stays in the game every pitch, he sees things some of our coaches don’t see. He’s going to be a hell of a coach some day and he’s a pretty darn good player. It was good to see him step up at such a big moment for himself, and for our team. I’m just thrilled we found a way to win. The life in this league is tough, it’s a quick turn around and we’ll have to strap it on and try and play well tomorrow.”

UP NEXT
South Carolina is back in action on Sunday, March 26 at Noon for the final game in the three-game series with Alabama at Founders Park. It will be broadcast live on SEC Network Plus. The game can also be heard on the Gamecock IMG Network including flagship station, 107.5 FM, “The Game.”

Sat, March 25, 2017
ANNANDALE, NY – The Iona College baseball program earned a split of today’s doubleheader against Marist College at Bard College to conclude the three-game MAAC series. The Gaels (6-10, 1-2 MAAC) opened the day with a 3-1 victory while the Red Foxes (11-8, 2-1 MAAC) claimed a 10-3 victory in the finale.

Game One

Following two scoreless innings to start the seven-inning opener, the Maroon & Gold struck first with a two runs in the top of the third. After leading the inning off with a single, Joseph Lovecchio scored with two outs on a RBI single up the middle from Fran Kinsey. Brian Picone scored during the next at-bat as Fran Kinsey stole second to produce a Marist error.

Anthony Lazar helped the Red Foxes cut the deficit in half during the bottom of the third, starting with a one out single. The sophomore followed with a steal of second and third before scoring on a wild pitch.

Iona added an insurance run to a 2-1 lead during the fourth as Lovecchio earned the RBI this time around. The catcher drove in Matt Flannery who reached earlier on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a throwing error.

The three runs proved to be enough support for starter Patrick Ryan and reliever Jared Finkel as the duo held Marist to two hits. Ryan tossed the first five innings, striking out six while allowing one hit and one run before Finkel earned his third save of the season with the final two innings of work, allowing just one hit.

Game Two

After falling behind 2-0, the Maroon & Gold rallied in the top of the fifth inning with three runs on four hits to claim the advantage. With two runners on, Fran Kinsey singled to center to score Jon Budesa before Sean Breen drove in Kinsey and Picone with a double to left center.

Iona held the 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth before Marist scored eight runs throughout the next two innings. Patrick Lightner tied the score with a sacrifice bunt. The Red Foxes followed with a pair of two RBI hits from Frankie Gregoire and Andrew Rouse.

In the seventh, Lightner scored on an error following a single from Lazar to increase the advantage to 9-3. Lazar later scored to make it 10-3 after stealing third and scoring on a throwing error. Five errors led to five unearned runs for Iona in the finale.

The Gaels return home on Tuesday to host Seton Hall for a 3:30 pm first pitch at City Park. The contest marks only the second home game in the first 17 games for the Maroon & Gold this season.

FLORDA POSTS 8-1 WIN OVER LSU IN GAME 2 OF SERIES

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Sophomore right-hander Brady Singer fired a complete-game six-hitter Saturday to lead 11th-ranked Florida to an 8-1 win over No. 4 LSU at McKethan Stadium.

Florida improved to 16-8 overall and 2-3 in the SEC, while LSU dropped to 17-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

The series concludes at Noon CT Sunday in a contest that will be televised by the SEC Network. The game will be carried on the LSU Sports Radio Network, and the broadcast can be heard at www.LSUsports.net/live.

Sunday’s game may also be viewed at WatchESPN.com and the Watch ESPN app.

Singer (3-1) threw 109 pitches in the victory, limiting LSU to one run on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

“Singer has one of the best fastballs in the country, and we couldn’t get anything going against him,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “Florida always has great arms, and they’ve kept us from generating much offensively so far this weekend. We’ve got another opportunity tomorrow in an important ball game, so our focus shifts to trying to finish this weekend on a high note.”

LSU starting pitcher Jared Poche’ (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he surrendered four runs – three earned – on six hits in four innings with four walks and two strikeouts.

Florida’s 10-hit attack was paced by catcher Mike Rivera, who was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Rightfielder Nelson Maldonado and shortstop Christian Hicks had two RBI apiece for the Gators.

The Gators took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning against Poche’ when first baseman JJ Schwarz reached on an error and later scored when Poche’ hit Hicks with a bases-loaded pitch.

Florida increased the advantage to 2-0 in the third when Maldonado delivered a two-out, RBI single.

LSU narrowed the gap to 2-1 in the fourth when leftfielder Antoine Duplantis doubled, moved to third on rightfielder Greg Deichmann’s groundout and scored on third baseman Josh Smith’s groundout to second base.

The Gators, however, answered with a run in the fourth when leftfielder Ryan Larson singled, moved to second on a groundout by centerfielder Nick Horvath, moved to third on designated hitter Dalton Guthrie’s groundout and scored on a wild pitch by Poche’.

Florida added a run in the fifth when Schwarz doubled and scored on a Maldonado double, and the Gators widened the margin to 5-1 in the seventh against reliever Austin Bain when Maldonado walked and scored on Rivera’s double.

The Gator scored three runs in the eighth against reliever Hunter Kiel on RBI singles by Schwarz and Rivera, and a run-scoring double by Hicks.

The Tigers split four games last week, defeating Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday before winning one of three games at Florida over the weekend.

Sunday’s 10-6 win over the Gators featured a tremendous LSU comeback, as the Tigers trailed 5-0 after five innings and 6-2 after seven innings. LSU erupted for six runs in the eighth inning with three two-run homers by third baseman Josh Smith, designated hitter Beau Jordan and second baseman Cole Freeman.

Jordan led the Tigers’ 12-hit attack in Sunday’s win, as he was 2-for-4 with a bases-loaded, two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning and the two-run homer in the eighth.

Smith was 4-for-4 in Wednesday’s win over Southeastern Louisiana with two doubles and four RBI. The outing marked his second 4-for-4 night of the season, as he also accomplished the feat on March 8 at McNeese State.

Tulane is hitting .247 as a team this season with 23 homers and 19 steals in 32 attempts. The Green Wave is led at the plate by senior infielder Hunter Williams, who is hitting .389 with nine doubles, one triple, three homers and 16 RBI.

What You Need to Know
- Rider hosts Delaware and Delaware State this week in non-conference action.

- Rider opened up its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) slate last weekend with a three-game series against Fairfield. The visiting Stags took two of three from the Broncs.

- Earlier this season, the Broncs topped Delaware State, 4-2, in a neutral-site clash as part of the Bob Hannah Invitational. In the win, Rider pushed across two runs in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Senior catcher Lee Lipinski delivered what proved to be the game-winning RBI with a single to left field.

- Delaware and Rider split two games earlier this season in Newark, DE. The Broncs took the opener, 4-3, and the Blue Hens won the finale, 8-5. In the victory, both Harrison McClure and junior infielder Christian Estevez went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

- For the first time in program history, the Broncs played a game in the state of New Jersey in the month of February, defeating Lafayette, 2-0, at home.

- During the team’s 10-day spring-break trip, Rider took two of three from Georgia and split a series at Campbell.

- Earlier this season, freshman second basemen Kyle Johnson was honored as College Sports Madness MAAC Player of the Week. It marked the first time in Johnson’s young career that he has earned recognition for his play on the field.

- The same week that Johnson earned his accolade; junior starting pitcher Nick Margevicius was named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week. It marked the first time this spring that Margevicius has earned the accolade and the second time in his career. As a freshman during the spring of 2015 he was once tabbed as the MAAC Rookie of the Week.

- This season, Margevicius has amassed a 1.69 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 32.0 innings pitched. The only Bronc with a lower ERA is closer Andrew Tumbelty. In 8.1 innings of work, Tumbelty has a 1.08 ERA and five strikeouts to go along with two saves. Out of the bullpen, Josh Sharik has made a team-high 12 appearances and Dylan Simcik leads the team with three wins.

- In his last start, freshman John Yocum tossed 6.1 innings and allowed two earned runs in a victory against Rutgers. It was the first win of Yocum’s young career. The first-year hurler also struck out a career-high seven batters.

- Offensively, three Bronc starters are hitting over .300, led by catcher Lee Lipinski at .367. Lipinski has amassed 18 hits and 10 RBIs. He also leads the team in doubles with four and slugging percentage at .510. Johnson is off to a torrid start, hitting .308 from the leadoff spot to go along with six extra-base hits and eight RBIs. He has also created opportunities on the basepaths, stealing seven bases. Mike Volaski is the other Bronc hitting over .300, checking in at .304 through 20 games.

SUBJECT: Home Runs, Meeker's Solid Outing Leads Blue Hens Baseball to Doubleheader Split vs. William & Mary
DATE: April 1, 2017
NEWARK, Del
. -- Behind three home runs and 11 hits, the University of Delaware baseball squad defeated William & Mary 8-5 in the second game of Saturday’s Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The win earned Delaware a split of Saturday’s doubleheader as William & Mary captured the opener by an 8-2 score.
In the nightcap, the Hens received first-inning home runs from Nick Tierno and Nick Pattern while Brian Mayer hit his fourth home run of the year in the second inning. Delaware received a solid effort from reliever James Meeker to help preserve the win.
“Overall, this was an OK day for us,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “We certainly won the second game because of our performances on the mound. We bounced back and swung the bats well in the second game. We have a really important swing game tomorrow. Hopefully the good things that happened in the second game can propel us into tomorrow.”
After a perfect top of the first inning from Blue Hens (14-10, 2-3 CAA) starter Nick Spadafino, Delaware got off to a quick 3-0 lead on the solo homer by Tierno and the two-run shot from Patten.
William & Mary (15-11, 2-3 CAA) quickly cut the Delaware lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the second. In the second inning, the Hens responded as Mayer socked a two-run homer well over the right centerfield wall, giving the Hens a 5-2 lead. The Tribe added a run in the third, cutting the UD lead to 5-3.
Spadafino returned to the mound for the fifth but was quickly replaced in favor of Meeker after the starter allowed a one-out home run that cut the UD lead to 5-4. Meeker came in and stabilized the game, recording the final two outs in the fifth.
After Meeker fired a scoreless seventh, the Hens bats came alive in the home half of the inning. Kevin Mohollen doubled with one out and Tierno walked. Jordan Glover followed with and RBI single, Doug Trimble doubled home another run, and Jeremy Ake brought home a run on a groundout to give the Hens an 8-4 advantage.
After Meeker allowed a double in the eight inning, Sherman brought in closer Ron Marinaccio, who got the Hens out of the jam and pitched a perfect ninth to preserve the win.
In game one of the doubleheader William & Mary defeated Delaware, 8-2 as the Tribe struck for fours runs in the first inning off Blue Hens starter Brandon Walter.
The Hens connected on 10 hits for the 13th time this season but only managed two runs off William & Mary starter Nick Brown, who pitched seven solid innings. Mohollen, Ake, and right fielder Calvin Scott each collected a pair of hits for the Hens.
Delaware and William & Mary will play the rubber-game Sunday at 1 p.m. Senior left-hander Kevin Milley (3-0, 2.65 ERA) will take the mound for the Hens while William & Mary will counter with left-hander Nick Raquet (1-1, 2.36 ERA).
“Going into tomorrow we need a good outing from Milley,” Sherman said. “Ideally we need six good innings from him and then we’ll see how everyone bounces back from today. We have Burk FitzPatrick also available for tomorrow and he’s been pitching really well for us. We certainly have options.”

GAMECOCKS EVEN SERIES WITH 7-0 WIN AT AUBURN

AUBURN, ALA. – Carlos Cortes’ first career homer was a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning and junior right-hander Clarke Schmidt pitched eight scoreless innings to earn his fourth win of the season as fourth ranked South Carolina defeated 10th ranked Auburn 7-0 on Saturday to even a three-game SEC baseball series. The Gamecocks improve to 19-7 and 6-2 in the SEC with Auburn 22-7 and 6-2 in league play.

Schmidt allowed just five hits and three walks and struck out 10 to improve to 4-0 on the year. Auburn right-hander Davis Daniel took the loss and is now 2-1 for the season. He allowed four runs on four hits in 5.1 innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

After going hitless in the first four innings, the Gamecocks strung together three consecutive hits to take a 2-0 lead. Jacob Olson led off with a base hit to left field. Carlos Cortes would drive in Olson with a triple off the wall in right field followed by a RBI single to left-center off the bat of LT Tolbert.

Carolina broke ahead six runs in the sixth inning on Cortes’ grand slam. Jonah Bride singled with one out followed by a walk to Matt Williams. Jacob Olson walked on a 3-2 count with two outs to load the bases. That set the stage for Cortes, who launched a 1-0 pitch from Auburn reliever Corey Herndon over the right field wall to extend the lead to 6-0.

Olson would score his third run of the game in the ninth inning as he doubled to open the frame and scored with two outs on a wild pitch to give Carolina the 7-0 lead.

GAME CHANGER
Cortes’ grand slam broke open a close two-run game in the sixth inning.

KEY STAT
South Carolina out-hit Auburn 8-5 and left just one runner on base the entire game.

NOTABLES
Jacob Olson went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Olson’s fifth inning single extended his hitting streak to seven games. He has also reached base safely in 15 straight games.

Cortes’ five RBI tied an individual high by a Gamecock player. Chris Cullen also had five RBI for the Gamecocks on March 7 vs. The Citadel. Cortes finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Matt Williams has reached base in 24 straight games. Williams extended the streak with a walk in the sixth inning.

The Gamecocks are outscoring opponents 78-17 in the middle innings (4-5-6) this year.

QUOTABLE FROM HEAD COACH CHAD HOLBROOK
“Clarke was the story from a defensive standpoint with the way that he pitched. I thought maybe from the third inning to about the seventh inning is about the best I’ve ever seen him throw. It was very impressive. Carlos started swinging the bat the way we knew he was capable of. Five RBI and the big grand slam there. The thing that stood out to me was the at bat before Carlos, Olson fouled off some balls and didn’t chase a ball in the dirt. I told the team after the game that it was a four-run take. That’s how important that take was. It gets lost in the stat sheet, but not lost in how the game resulted. It was a complete team win. We pitched, played D and got some big hits from Carlos. (SEC road games) are tough and you cherish every one of them when you get a road win in this league.”

QUOTABLE FROM CLARKE SCHMIDT
“First I have to thank my defense. That was an unbelievable performance. Madison, LT, Jonah, Matty, all the double plays. It was special. Early on, this mound is a little steeper than the normal mound that I’m used to throwing off of. I couldn’t adjust to get my slider for strikes. So that was one of my pitches I didn’t get going until the fourth or fifth. I knew I had to get it going. My fastball had life the whole game. It was pretty hard and had good run on it. I was throwing it where I wanted to. I threw a lot of good changeups today. I was happy with this performance.”

QUOTABLE FROM CARLOS CORTES
“I was just looking for a fastball or something I could drive. I had bases loaded, 1-0 count, he couldn’t really throw me anything else, so I was just looking for one pitch, got it and was able to (get) my hands through it and obviously hit it out.

UP NEXT
South Carolina and Auburn conclude the weekend series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is 2 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on SEC Network Plus and can be heard on the Gamecock IMG Network including flagship station, 107.5 FM, “The Game.”

SUBJECT: Delaware Can't Come Up With Big Hit in 7-4 CAA Baseball Loss at Northeastern
DATE: April 8, 2017
BROOKLINE, Mass
. -- The University of Delaware baseball team dropped a 7-4 contest at Northeastern Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association weekend set at Friedman Diamond.
The Blue Hens (16-13, 4-4 CAA), who won the series opener by a 2-1 score on Friday, went 0-7 with the bases loaded and just 2-13 (.154) with runners in scoring position.
“Our offense just didn’t come through today,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “We worked 12 walks and had 20 base runners, but just couldn’t seem to find the big hit when we needed it. When a team gives us as many chances as we got today we have to have better at-bats. Now we have to rebound tomorrow and grab the rubber-game.”
Leftfielder Jordan Glover collected two hits for Delaware while designated hitter Doug Trimble knocked in two runs and first baseman Nick Patten his a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Trailing 5-3 in the seventh, Delaware loaded the bases with no outs for Trimble, who hit a ball that barely missed sneaking into left field for a hit. Instead Huskies shortstop Max Burt gloved it and threw out Nick Tierno at second base for the first out of the inning.
After a walk reloaded the bases, Jeremy Ake struck out on a full count and Patten grounded out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh Northeastern added two more runs off Kyle Hinton and Burk FitzPatrick on a two-run triple by Jimmy Hand.
Facing a three-run deficit, the Hens bats tried to mount a comeback in the eighth, loading the bases with nobody out for Kyle Baker. After a pitching change, Baker grounded out to the pitcher who threw out a runner at the plate. Tierno, the next Delaware batter grounded into an inning ending 1-2-3 double play.
The Blue Hens brought the tying run to the plate twice in the ninth inning, but Patten and Diaz Nardo struck out to end the game.
Delaware will look for the series victory tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. LHP Kevin Milley will be opposed by RHP Brian Christian.
