SUBJECT: Blue Hens Come Up Just Short in 67-65 Heartbreaker at Towson

DATE: February 15, 2018

TOWSON, Md. – Ryan Allen’s last second three-point attempt was blocked by Eddie Keith II as Towson held off Delaware, 67-65, in Colonial Athletic Association action Thursday night at SECU Arena.

The Tigers (18-10, 8-7 CAA) trailed 63-61 with 3:55 to play, but scored the next six points to go up four with 26 seconds to play. Towson then missed two free throws, before Ryan Daly converted a layup to bring the Blue Hens (11-17, 4-11 CAA) within a pair with 14 seconds on the clock.

Mike Morsell then missed two more from the line, but Allen’s contested three-pointer from the top of the key was deflected by Keith II.

Daly scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Delaware in his return from a sprained ankle, while Anthony Mosley also contributed 18 points on the night. Allen finished with 15 points, while Eric Carter chipped in with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Morsell poured in 19 points for Towson, while Brian Starr added 15 on the night.

The teams were tied midway through the first half, before Delaware used a seven-point run to go up 25-18 on a Daly three-pointer. Towson answered with an eight-point spurt to take the lead, before two Daly free throws and one by Skye Johnson gave the Blue Hens a 32-30 edge at the intermission.

Neither team led by more than three points during the majority of the second half, and after the Tigers went up 61-58, Mosley converted a three-point play and added a layup to put Delaware up a pair with 3:55 to play. However Towson then answered with six straight to take the lead for good.

HEAD COACH MARTIN INGELSBY

“We keep putting ourselves in position to win down the stretch, but just can’t get over the hump. This is a tough place to play against a good basketball team, and we battled but just came up a little short. Our zone was good and for the most part we did well rebounding the basketball, but gave up too many offensive rebounds. We got into a good flow offensively, but a couple of turnovers hurt us down the stretch. We’re playing well, and our time is coming.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS

• The Blue Hens dropped their ninth consecutive game

• Allen has reached double figures in 12 straight games and hit a three-pointer in 25 consecutive contests

• Daly surpassed the 900-point mark for his career

• The game was tied 17 times and featured 13 lead changes

• Towson defeated the Blue Hens for the sixth straight meeting

SUBJECT: Blue Hens Post Decisive 72-57 Home Victory Over Elon

DATE: February 17, 2018

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware led for virtually the entire night and shot 52 percent from the field as the Blue Hens got back in the win column with a decisive 72-57 victory over Elon Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Delaware (12-17, 5-11 CAA), which knocked down 27 of 52 shots from the field and held a commanding 46-31 rebounding advantage, used an early eight-point spurt to go up 12-4 midway through the first half and led the rest of the way. The Blue Hens took a nine-point cushion into halftime, and the margin never got below six during the second period.

Ryan Daly scored 22 points and grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds to pace Delaware, while Eric Carter notched his ninth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 boards. Ryan Allen contributed 17 points for the Blue Hens, while Anthony Mosley was the fourth UD player in double figures with 13 points.

Tyler Seibring reached double figures for the 16th straight game with 22 points for the Phoenix (14-14, 6-9 CAA), while Dainan Swoope contributed 10 points on the night.

The Blue Hens led by as much as 15 twice in the first half, before three-pointers by Dmitri Thompson and Swoope cut the UD advantage to 32-23 at the break. Elon used a seven-point run to close with 46-40 at the 12:15 mark, but Delaware countered with a 20-6 spurt to go up a game-high 20 points at 66-46 with 4:35 to play.

HEAD COACH MARTIN INGELSBY

“It’s great to have Ryan Daly back, he takes pressure off Ryan Allen and Eric Carter. It helps to make shots, and we hit some timely three-pointers tonight. I thought we got into a good flow offensively, and were able to space the floor and attack. We’ve spent a lot of time playing zone this week, and our guys are getting a good feel for how to play it. We challenged shots and were able to take them out of their rhythm. We’re playing well and getting healthy, and our guys feel we can beat anybody in the league.”

RYAN DALY

“We were due for one. Elon is a good team and beat us two weeks ago but we were able to get them back tonight. We were hitting on all cylinders and got a decisive win, so I’m happy about that. We were sharp in our preparation and played a great defensive game. This will help us build momentum into next weekend and the CAA Tournament.”

ANTHONY MOSLEY

“It feels great to win, we’ve taken a lot of punches lately but were able to get over the hump. This is a big win.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS

• Delaware snapped a nine-game losing streak

• Allen has reached double figures in 13 straight games and hit a three-pointer in 26 consecutive contests

• Daly scored in double digits for the 22nd game in a row

• Daly posted his first double-double of the year and the seventh of his career

• Carter has reached double figures in six of the last seven games

• Delaware improved to 2-7 all-time vs. Elon

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

The Blue Hens then used a nine-point spurt to go up 24-15, and Allen buried consecutive three-pointers in the final minute to give Delaware a 41-30 advantage at the break.

Elon pulled within three points twice early in the second half, the second time at 52-49, but Delaware scored 11 of the next 14 points to go back up 11 on an Allen three-pointer with 11 minutes to play.

The Blue Hens went ahead by as much as 13 twice, the second time at 71-58 at the 5:48 mark, and although the Phoenix closed within five in the final minute, Delaware hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

HEAD COACH MARTIN INGELSBY

“This was a great team effort, we really battled tonight. We got into a good flow offensively, and the zone was really good to us. Ryan Daly was terrific and Eric Carter had a fabulous night, he played like one of the best big guys in the league. We did a great job of handling the basketball against their pressure, and just need to do a better job of hitting our free throws. Northeastern is really good, but we’ll be ready to go tomorrow.”

RYAN DALY

“I got into a good rhythm offensively, and I was just trying to make plays to help my team win. I didn’t want us to be one and done down here, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

• Daly reached double figures for the 25th consecutive game

• Carter became the 32nd player in UD history to grab 500 career rebounds

• Allen tied the UD single season three-pointer record of 86 also held by John Gordon in 1998-99

Blue Hens Receive Quality Start from Ludman, but Fall to James Madison

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware baseball team fell 6-0 to James Madison University Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Freshman Chris Ludman threw six strong innings Sunday, allowing just two earned runs. The Delaware native struck out five batters and didn’t issue a walk.

Delaware (20-17, 7-5 CAA) managed just two hits off James Madison (21-19, 6-9 CAA) starter Nick Stewart who threw six shutout innings striking out nine batters.

Down just 2-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Blue Hens placed the tying runs on base with just one out, but a strikeout and a groundout quickly ended the Delaware threat.

In the eighth, James Madison added four runs to put the game away for good. Despite the loss, the Blue Hens still earned the series victory by virtue of a 5-1 Friday victory and a 7-6 Saturday victory.

Junior Nick Patten increased his on-base streak to 28 games with a fourth-inning single, while Clay Conaway struck out a pair of batters in a scoreless ninth.

Delaware returns to action Tuesday afternoon at Delaware State. First pitch from Dover is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Head coach Jim Sherman:

"We just ran out of gas today. I thought Ludman gave us another good start just like he did last weekend, but our bats just didn't come through for him. Give James Madison's starter a lot of credit he was very good today. Overall, we still won the series which is a positive."

HEN SCRATCHINGS: • Delaware falls to 3-16 this season when getting outhit.
• Ludman threw a career-high six innings. His five strikeouts are also a career-best.
• The Blue Hens were shutout for the fourth time this season.
• Patten also ran his hitting streak to four.
• Through four CAA series, Delaware sits in a three-way tie for third place.

SUBJECT: Blue Hen Guard Ryan Allen Sidelined for Two Months Following Foot Surgery

NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware sophomore guard Ryan Allen will miss two months after undergoing surgery today to repair a fifth metatarsal fracture in his left foot.

Allen, who was named CAA Preseason Honorable Mention on Wednesday after earning league Rookie of the Year honors last season, ranked second on the Blue Hens by averaging 15.3 points per game and tied the UD single season record by hitting 86 three-pointers a year ago. He reached double figures in 25 contests including six 20-point efforts, and hit a three-pointer in the first 29 games of his career.
