SUBJECT: Wilmington Baseball Continues to Help the Community with its Annual Adopt a Highway Campaign

DATE: October 24, 2013
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Prior to clearing the bases with one swing of the bat in their fall season, the Wilmington University baseball team took time away from the diamond to clear the street and continue its annual Adopt A Highway program on Saturday, October 12.

“Anytime we can get out into the community and give back is a great day,” head coach Brian August, who will enter his tenth year at the helm of the Wildcats in the spring, said. “The community has been there for our baseball program through the years and we just want to show that we appreciate their support and want to give back.”

It is the fifth straight year August and his team has been a part of the Adopt A Highway campaign, starting the annual cleanup in 2008. The team swept through Route 273 between the First Baptist Church of New Castle and the backside of the New Castle Farmers’ Market.

In all, 40 players from the baseball team helped clean both sides of Route 273, clearing trash and debris along the highway.

The baseball team returns in 2014 as the three-time conference champions looking to progress forward towards a fourth straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship and NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament appearance in the spring.

Wilmington Women’s Soccer Falls, 1-0, on the Road

DATE: October 12, 2013

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - - The Wilmington University women’s soccer team fell in an early hole and could never recover, falling 1-0 on the road at Bloomfield in a much needed Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Foley Field.

Looking to gain momentum after their 2-1 come-from-behind victory against Post last Saturday, the Wildcats (4-6-1, 4-3-1 CACC) went down early in the game for the second match in a row, but this time were unable to recover. Bloomfield (3-7-1, 2-3-1 CACC) snapped a two game losing streak, preserving the shutout after scoring in the second minute of the match.

Bloomfield senior Mikie Bradley gave the Lady Deacons the advantage just 65 seconds into the opening half, corralling a loose ball just outside the Wilmington 18-yard box and fired a shot past Wildcats goalkeeper Julia Brown which proved to be the game winner.

Unlike last week when the Wildcats were able to score late against Post to force overtime and eventually put away the game-winner, Wilmington was unable to figure out the back line of the Lady Deacons all afternoon. Bloomfield outshot the Wildcats, 13-12, while the Wildcats were able to earn one more corner, 2-1. Each team’s keeper needed to make seven saves on the afternoon.

Bloomfield senior keeper Sashagay Spence made seven saves her second shutout of the season in the win over the defending CACC Tournament champions, picking up her second shutout victory of the season in the win.

Victoria Vasapolli led the Wildcats with three shots, two of which reached Spence. Blair LaJudice also put two shots on frame, but was denied both times by Spence. Jenna Quaranta, Jordanne Hoesli-Atkins, and Rebecca Sowers each put one shot on goal in the match.

The Wildcats looks to rebound on Tuesday afternoon when they return to the WU Athletics Complex for another CACC contest, this time against Chestnut Hill. The opening draw is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.

NEWARK, Del. - - In as close to back-to-back matches against one team it is going to get, the Wilmington University volleyball team learned from its five set loss last week and scored the revenge by defeating Holy Family, 3-1, on Friday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, and 25-17.

The loss on the road last week in Philadelphia was the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division regular season loss since 2011 for the Wildcats (12-8, 7-1 CACC), but they returned home to tame the Tigers (8-10, 5-4 CACC) in their second match of the season.

Wilmington held the Tigers to a team hitting percentage of .082 for the match, while the Wildcats collected a .305 attack percentage, including a match high .333 in the fourth and final set. The defense also out-blocked, 7-5, and out dug, 59-52, the Tigers for the match.

Setter Kasey Couch and Alex Siolos spread the offense around and helped the back row on defense as each collected a double-double on the night. Both Couch and Siolos dished out 20 assists each, but Couch held the edge with 13 digs. Siolos ended with 10 digs. Tonight was Siolos’ eighth double-double of the season, a team high, while Couch collected her seventh double-double of the year.

The offense had three Wildcats in double figures, led by Kaitlin DiGiacinto’s 13 terminations. Freshman Allison Briley added 12 kills on a 33.3 percentage success rate while senior Brittany Biddle chipped in with 11 kills and a team high .421 attack percentage. Biddle’s 11 kills came on 19 swings with only three errors.

The Wildcats started quickly in the first set, as they came out and score the first eight points of the opening game before jumping to a 10-1 lead. But the Tigers fired back with five straight points of their own to cut the deficit to 10-6. Now leading 13-9, the Wildcats scored four straight and seven of the next nine points to up the advantage to 20-11, capped by back-to-back kills by Briley. A service error gave the ball back to the Wildcats leading 21-13, and kills by DiGiacinto, and Briley, and a block by Shorter pushed the Wildcats to set point, 24-13. The Tigers responded once again, scoring five consecutive points to put pressure on the home team before an attack error gave Wilmington the set, 25-18.

Wilmington took a 20-17 lead in the second set following four straight points, capped by a double block by Briley and Shorter. Kills by Siolos and DiGiacinto gave the Wildcats a 23-19 lead but it was the Tigers who rallied to take the set. Without giving up another point, the Tigers fought all the way back to claim the set, 25-23, ended on back-to-back kills by Sarah Ambach.

The Wildcats jumped out to another early lead in the third set, scoring seven straight points to take a 9-3 lead. Another four consecutive points pushed the lead to 13-5 before Briley’s kill gave the Wildcats a commanding 19-9 lead in the game. Once again, the Tigers would not go away quietly, as they scored five straight to close the gap to 19-14. But the Wildcats settled and scored six of the next eight points, including the final three, to take the third set, 25-16.

Short bursts of three and four consecutive points allowed the Wildcats to take control of the fourth set, and they opened with leads of 4-1, 10-4, and 12-5. The Tigers got within four at 12-8 but the Wildcats scored five of the next six points to open the lead to 17-9. After going back and forth, the Wildcats tallied three straight points on a kill by Biddle and back-to-back Tiger errors to put the game and match away, 25-17.

Katie Shorter tallied seven kill with a .375 attack percentage on the night while Siolos chipped in with five kills of her own. Shorter also led the team at the net, collecting three solo blocks and adding two block assists. Siolos added the only other solo block on the night. Couch led the team with her 13 digs followed by Shelby Henderson’s 12 and Annie Scarfo’s 11.

The Wildcats have little time to rest, as they return to the court on Saturday for a 12 p.m. match at the WU Athletics Complex. The team will host Bloomfield from the CACC North Division for its lone matchup of the regular season.

Saturday is the team’s Juvenile Diabetes Awareness match and they will be collected donations at the door. The Wildcats will also be selling Juvenile Diabetes bracelets and 50-50 raffle tickets throughout the match to raise money and awareness for the cause.

NEWARK, Del. - - Senior Todd Woll picked a good time to score his first career goal as a member of the Wilmington University men’s soccer team on Tuesday, knotting the score of what turned into a 1-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference draw with Philadelphia at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (8-3-1, 4-2-1 CACC) responded after going down a goal early in the second half, scoring in the 76th minute to finally tie the match. Philadelphia (7-3-1, 5-1-1 CACC) had a chance to end the match at the end of regulation, but a header off a corner was saved.

The Rams were able to get on the board first in the contest, scoring on a misplay in the back by the Wildcats’ defense. Failing to clear the ball out of their own penalty box, the Wildcats turned the ball over to the Rams’ Jordan Lynch on the right side, who beat Frank Hall to the near post for the 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute.

The Wildcats, who controlled the ball for the majority of the contest, led the Rams in shot, 12-10, and corners, 11-4, for the match, but couldn’t solve the Philadelphia defense until late.

On their eight corner of the game, the Wildcats finally broke through in the 76th minute. Freshman Geoff Velasquez’s corner carried over the Ram’s goalkeeper Thomas Attamante and towards the back post, but stayed out of the goal as it rung the crossbar and bounced out.

Woll, a senior defender, was there on the back post as he side volleyed the ball back towards the goal mouth. Philadelphia was able to head the ball away, but not before the ball completely crossed the goal line, knotting the game at 1-1.

Wilmington put five shots on the board in the two overtime periods and added a pair of corner kicks in the second 10 minutes, but couldn’t find the back of the net for the rest of the match. It was the first tie of the season for both the Rams and the Wildcats.

Starting goalkeeper Frank Hall recorded three saves in 80:28 of game play before an injury forced him out of the contest. Junior Spyros Stergiotis came on and tallied three saves while playing the reaming 29:32. The Rams’ Attamante needed to make three saves to escape with the tie.

Thursday’s match against the University of the District of Columbia, a government funded school, has been postponed due to the government shutdown. The two teams are searching for a rescheduled date later in the year, but is handcuffed until the government pays its bills.

Wilmington now returns to action on Saturday, as they head to CACC rival Bloomfield for their first road game since September 24. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - In leading the Wilmington University women’s soccer team to a 1-0-1 record this past week, freshman Kim Richer has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week, announced by the conference office on Monday.

Richer (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) helped the team to a 2-1 victory over cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday before settling on a 1-1 tie with Caldwell on Saturday for Homecoming.

Against Goldey-Beacom, Richer tied the match in the 13th minute with a 25-yard strike, shooting high above the Lightning keeper to knot the score at 1-1. RINDGE, N.H. - - Despite Kendal Parliament's nine saves in goal, the Wilmington University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision on the road at Franklin Pierce, rounding out the opening weekend of action for the 2013 season on Sunday afternoon.

Much like the opening game on Friday, the defensive unit held in tact through an onslaught of shots by Franklin Pierce (1-1), as the defender turned goalkeeper Parliament recorded nine saves and initially stopped the shot that led to the Ravens' goal.

The Wildcats (0-2) were outshot 20-1 for the match and 15-0 in the first half alone before playing a more offensive game in the second 45 minutes.

Franklin Pierce scored the only goal it needed in the 36th minute off the foot of Eize Vieira. After initially making the save on the shot, the ball slipped through Parliament's hands and headed towards the goal line. Much to the displeasure of head coach Josh Ruggiero, the referee saw the ball completely cross the line prior to Parliament regaining control of the ball.

After heading into the break trailing 1-0, freshman Rebecca Sowers registered the team's lone shot in the 55th minute, sailing it wide of the goal.

The Wildcats registered a pair of first half corners as well, but were outnumbered for the match, 12-2, by the Ravens.

Wilmington remains on the road for another game, as it heads to Georgian Court on Thursday to opens the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference portion of its schedule. The game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Lakewood, N.J.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Basketball Programs Welcome Matt O’Brien and Candice Walker on Staff for 2013-14

DATE: October 24, 2013
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - Preparing to start a new season on the court, the Wilmington University basketball programs each added personnel to the bench in adding Matt O’Brien and Candice Walker to the men’s and women’s coaching staff, respectively.

O’Brien joins the men’s staff as an assistant after seven years as an assistant at Eastern University. Prior to coaching at Eastern, O’Brien was a four year letterwinner for the basketball team at Grove City College in Grove City, Pa.

"Matt has a ton of contacts all over the area and is known as one of the best recruiters in the Mid-Atlantic Region,” fifth year head coach Mike Gallagher said. “He will be a tremendous asset to our program. In my opinion, along with our current assistants Harrison Singer and Vernon Dupree, the addition of Matt gives us one of the best recruiting staffs in the CACC (Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference)."

He helped lead the Eagles to four conference tournament semifinal appearances between the PAC and the MAC conferences. While mainly focusing on the post positions, O’Brien helped coach six all-conference selections during his tenure at Eastern, including three first-team honorees.

While at Eastern, O’Brien was also the JV Head Coach, implementing the skill development and program play book to the student-athletes on the freshman team. He was also responsible for organizing the team’s travel and meal arrangements, as well as the budget of the JV program.

Walker joins the women’s staff after a successful career on the court for the Loyola University Maryland Greyhounds.

Walker, a native of Baltimore, Md., was a four-year letterwinner for the Greyhounds, completing her senior season on the court in 2012-13. Her career started off by being named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team in 2007-08 after becoming the first true freshman to start for Loyola at the point guard position since the 1991-92 season.

“I had the pleasure of recruiting and coaching Candice at the high school level,” second year head coach Tiffany Silver said. “She was a coaches’ model point guard. Her work ethic and success through high school and college makes her a fantastic addition to my staff. She's ambitious, passionate, and hungry to make her mark at Wilmington. The best person to hire, in my opinion, is one of the best point guards to ever play for me. The girls love her energy and have adapted and welcomed her from day one.”

As a freshman, Walker led the MAAC rookies with 252 points and 93 assists while also leading the conference rookies in minutes played. She was named MAAC Rookie of the Week four times as a freshman. She played, and started, in all 30 games for the 2007-08 season. As a sophomore, she again led her team in assists, tallying 74 with a career high eight against Towson.

Injuries plagued her junior and senior seasons, but Walker was granted a medical hardship to compete in her sixth season as a Greyhound, finishing out her career during the 2012-13 season. She came back and played in 18 games last year, making one start. She scored a season high five points against Maryland and added a season high three assists twice.

Walker has worked as a coach at the Point Guard College and is a graduate from WBCA’s “So You Want To Be A Coach” at last season’s NCAA Division I Women’s Final Four.

The men’s 2013-14 schedule begins at the Bentley Tip-Off on November 8-9, with the first chance to catch them at the WU Athletics Complex on November 14 against Millersville at 7 p.m. The women start their season on November 9 at Lock Haven with their first home game against Bloomsburg on November 16 starting at 2 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - Down eight late in the second half, the Wilmington University men's basketball team stormed back to steal a victory at Chestnut Hill, 63-62, in both team's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener on Tuesday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The Wildcats (3-4 overall, 1-0 CACC) trailed 56-47 after the Griffins (1-5, 0-1 CACC) scored a layup with 5:35 remaining in regulation, but went on a 15-6 run to close out the game and take the first game of their CACC schedule.

Trailing by one with 41 seconds to play, senior Shaq Monroe-Gaskins sank a pair of free throws to take the lead for good after the Griffins missed their final two shots of the game and were called for traveling off an inbounds play with less than two seconds remaining.

Wilmington needed to battle from behind all night long, finding itself down by 11 points six minutes into the contest, 15-4. An 8-0 lead brought the Wildcats to within three at 17-14 moments later, however, after Herb Dennis hit a jumper with 10:53 left in the first half.

The Wildcats got to within as few as a single point after a three-pointer by Shai Henry with 5:53 to play, before settling on a four-point deficit at the halftime break.

Henry connected on a layup just over three minutes into the start of the second half to give the Wildcats their largest lead of the night at 38-33 with 16:52 remaining in regulation.

Now tied at 47-47 with 8:46 on the clock, the Griffins stormed out to a 56-47 lead before the visitors made their best and final comeback.

Valentino Thompson started the run with a pair of free throws before Monroe-Gaskins converted on a four-point play to pull within 56-52 with 4:32 to play. After a bucket by the Griffins, Dennis hit back-to-back three-pointers on consecutive possessions to put Wilmington ahead, 59-58, with 3:23 to play.

The teams traded buckets with the Griffins' Taylor Trevisan giving the home team a 62-61 lead with 1:33 left in regulation. Thompson missed a three-pointer on the Wildcats next possession, but a turnover by the Griffins put the ball back in the hands of the visitors.

Monroe-Gaksins was fouled with 41 seconds left on the clock, send him to the line for the double-bonus. The senior hit both ends of the foul shots, giving the Wildcats the lead for good.

Dennis scored a game high 15 points, hitting three three-pointers while also dishing out a game high four assists. Ta'Vaune Griffin went 5-of-6 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line for 12 points, denying four shots and grabbing nine rebounds defensively as well. Henry also hit three three-pointers in the contest, finishing with 11 points.

Monroe-Gaskins finished with seven points off the bench for the Wildcats, hitting 4-of-7 from the foul line, but clutch in the end with under a minute to play.

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men's basketball
team stumbled down the stretch in regulation against the New York Institute of
Technology on Saturday, leading for a majority of the contest before falling,
85-83, in overtime at the WU Athletics Complex.

Leading by nine points with 3:28 remaining in regulation, the
Bears (2-3 overall) went on a 12-3 run to close out the second half, tying the
match at 70-70 with a layup by their big-man Markus Moore with 27 seconds left.
The Wildcats' (3-5 overall) shot on the final possession was blocked at the
buzzer, sending the game into overtime.

The momentum carried into the overtime period for the Bears,
as they hit their first four shots, one of which turned into a three-point play,
and grabbed a six point lead with 3:01 remaining in the extra period.

The Wildcats clawed back, however, and even had an
opportunity to tie the match at the end of the overtime period. They got the
deficit to within three with a layup by Ta'Vaune Griffin with 14 seconds left,
and was still in the game after the Bears could only convert one-of-two from the
ensuing trip to the foul line. Valentino Thompson closed the gap to two points
by hitting both of his two foul shots with 10 seconds remaining.

NYIT helped the Wilmington cause at the end by missing a pair
from the line with two seconds remaining, and Thompson and the Wildcats came
racing back down the floor looking to tie the game. Thompson got into the lane
but was denied by the Bears' Moore who collected his 11th blocked shot of the
game with three seconds left.

The ensuing inbounds play find a cutting Shaq Monroe-Gaskins
down the middle of the paint, but his shot was off the mark at the buzzer,
giving the Bears the two-point victory.

With only three ties throughout the first 39 minutes of game
action, the Wildcats never trailed prior to the overtime period. They led by as
many as 10 points in the game, following a pair of free-throws by Tyaire
Ponzo-Meek with 2:49 showing on the clock in the first half. The home team took
a 44-37 lead into the halftime break as well.

The game was tied briefly at 46-46 and again at 50-50 in the
second half before the Wildcats gained as large as a nine point lead with 3:28
to play.

NYIT's Moore led the comeback by collecting a triple-double,
scoring 13 points with game highs of 17 points and a remarkable 11 blocked
shots. Phil Izevnehai scored a game high 21 points for the Bears.

The Wildcats were led by Thompson's 18 points, as he shot
7-of-12 from the field. Herb Dennis inched closer to the 1,000 career point
plateau with 15 on Saturday while also grabbing seven rebounds. He now has 986
points in his four year career. Griffin added a double-double for the Wildcats,
scoring 13 points while grabbing a team high 13 rebounds for the home team.

Wilmington held a 23-19 scoring advantage from the bench
players, as Drew Johnson and Ponzo-Meek each tallied eight points in a reserved
role. Monroe-Gaskins added five points off the bench while Tyrik Gass collected
the final two points for the Wildcats.

Saturday was the first of three straight games at the WU
Athletics Complex for the Wildcats, as they return to action and to Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday against USciences. The CACC

NEWARK, Del. - - A second half comeback fell short as the Wilmington University men's basketball team ran out of steam after trailing by as many as 25 points against the University of the Sciences on Wednesday in the WU Athletics Complex.
The Wildcats fell 75-63 in the first of two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchups with the Devils.
Trailing by as many as 25 points with 17:36 remaining in regulation, the Wildcats put on the jets but couldn't break the double digit barrier, getting as close as 10 point on multiple occasions. It looked as though the Wildcats were bound to make a game of it late, getting to within 59-49 with 5:54 remaining on the clock.
The Devils sprinted out to a 17-6 lead in the first eight minutes, turning a 4-3 Wilmington advantage into a double-digit lead. The first half lead remained in the double-digits from the 8:45 mark and on, growing to as large as 21 after a jumper by Garret Kerr with 2:52 to play.
Back-to-back buckets by Valentino Thompson and Shaq Monroe-Gaskins brought it down to 17 point deficit for the Wildcats, but another 4-0 run gave the Devils a 39-18 lead at the break.
Scoring the first four points in the first half allowed the Devils to take their biggest lead of the game at 43-18 with 17:36 remaining in regulation. That is when the Wildcats went on their run to put a scare into the Devils down the stretch.
A quick 7-0 run with buckets by Ta'Vaune Griffin and Thompson, followed by a three-pointer by Tyaire Ponzo-Meek brought the deficit to 18 points. The Wildcats continued to cut into the deficit through the next eight minutes with Monroe-Gaskins layup following a steal brought the team to 59-49 with 5:54 left on the board.
The Wildcats had a pair of opportunities to get within single-digits, but a missed foul shot and a few missed jumpers never allowed the Wildcats to get closer than 10.
Monroe-Gaskins led the Wildcats with a career high 21 points, hitting 3-of-4 from three-point territory. Thompson was the only other Wildcat to reach double digits with 16 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor. Griffin led the team with nine rebounds while also denying four shot attempts.

USciences shot 62.5 percent from the floor for the game, adding 23-of-33 from the line.
The Wildcats remain at home for another CACC contest, as they welcome Post to the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday. The CACC doubleheader will begin with the women's game at 1, followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.

NEWARK, Del. - - Senior guard Herb Dennis became the third player in Wilmington University men's basketball NCAA era to scored 1,000 career points, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest against Post, 77-68, on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Dennis (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) sank a free-throw with 32 seconds remaining in the contest to break the 1,000 career point barrier, needing 10 points coming into today's game. He trails only Taurean Temple (1,423 points) and Antonio Sherrod (1,280 points) on the all-time career scoring list, since the Wildcats joined the NCAA ranks for the 2004-05 season. He is already the program's all-time leader in career assists, as well as the season record holder with 116 assists during last year's campaign.

The Wildcats (3-7, 1-2 CACC) were unable to climb back from a 12-0 run by Post (2-5, 2-2 CACC) in the middle of the second half, however, after Shaq Monroe-Gaskins tied the match at 38-38. Monroe-Gaskins put in a layup with 12:09 remaining in the game to cap a 6-0 run by the Wildcats, tying the contest for the fourth time.

Following a timeout, Post responded with its own 12-0 run over the next two and a half minutes and never relinquished the lead.

The Eagles' lead ballooned to as large as 14 points at 61-47 with 5:06 remaining before the Wildcats made a push to close the gap to as few as eight points with a minute to play and seven points with only 22 seconds remaining.

Wilmington had four players in double figures, led by Ta'Vaune Griffins' double-double of 12 points and 16 rebounds. The sophomore from Chester, Pa. also collected five blocked shots in the contest. Dennis also collected a double-double, scoring 12 points overall while adding 10 rebounds and a game high four assists. Post's Derrick Strong was the game-high scorer, finishing with 24 points while Zach Krischer hit five three-pointers (5-of-6) to score 19 points.

The Wildcats went 23-of-58 from the floor, but only hit 2-of-15 from beyond the three-point arc and 20-of-34 from the foul line. On the other hand, Post shot 24-of-53 from the floor, but 10-of-17 from three-point territory and 19-of-23 from the charity stripe.

Saturday wrapped up the three-game home stand for the Wildcats, as they return to the road for their next contest. The team will travel to Mercy College for a nonconference matchup on Wednesday night. The opening tip is scheduled for 8 p.m.

SUBJECT: First Half Shooting Leads Holy Family to 75-66 Men's Basketball Victory Over Wilmington

DATE: December 14, 2013

NEWARK, Del. - - A second half rally fell short for the Wilmington University men's basketball team, as Holy Family held off the Wildcats, 75-66, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division action on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Tigers (6-4, 1-1 CACC) picked up their first CACC victory of the early season by shooting 19-of-32 (59.4 percent) from the floor in the first half, holding a 13 point lead at the halftime break. The Wildcats (4-8, 1-3 CACC) won the second half, 33-29, but it wasn't enough to erase the halftime deficit.

Down by as many as 19 in the first half, the comeback really started with less than three minutes remaining in the opening half, getting the halftime deficit to 13 at 46-33.

After the Tigers had the lead as large as 17 points in the second half, the Wildcats closed to within five points following a pair of technical free throws by Herb Dennis with 1:26 remaining in regulation. But that would be as close as the home team would be able to get, as the Tigers hit their free-throws and kept the Wildcats off the board until the final second, settling on a nine point victory.

Shaq Monroe-Gaskins was deadly from deep, hitting four three-points on nine attempts, finishing with 17 points on the afternoon. The Wildcats were led by junior Valentino Thompson who collected 18 points after going a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor, including two three-pointers, in the first half.

Sophomore Shai Henry picked up his first career double-double in the loss, grabbing a game high 14 rebounds, five of which came on the offensive glass, while adding 11 points. Dennis was the final Wildcat in double figures, scoring 10 points while hitting 5-of-7 free throws and adding a team high five assists.

The Wildcats held the Tigers to 30.8 percent shooting in the second half, but the Tigers went to the line 19 times, making 13 to complete the victory. For the game, the Tigers outshot the Wildcats, 46.6 percent to 36.1 percent. Wilmington made eight three-pointers in the contest, but only went 14-of-23 from the foul line.

Wilmington remains in action with another CACC South Division foe this week, heading to Lakewood, N.J. to play first year program Georgian Court on Wednesday. It is the first meeting between the two programs as Georgian Court added men's programs to the athletic department starting this season. The game is the nightcap to the CACC doubleheader, with the women starting at 6 p.m. and the men scheduled to play at 8 p.m.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Men's Basketball Finishes Down the Stretch, Beating NCAA Division I UMES, 65-62, in an Exhibition

DATE: December 21, 2013

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - - Five players reached double figures as the Wilmington University men's basketball team scored five of the last seven points to defeat NCAA Division I University of Mary Eastern Shore, 65-62, in an exhibition game on Saturday at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

A layup by Ta'Vaune Griffin with 1:02 left in regulation put the Wildcats (5-8 overall) ahead for good as a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark for UMES (2-7 overall).

The Wildcats used one of their three allotted excusable contests when facing non-NCAA Division II opponents on Saturday, meaning the game does not count towards the Wildcats overall season record, but does for UMES.

After a back and forth first half, UMES took the lead for the final time with 5:06 remaining and then scored the final six points of the half to head into the break leading 35-28.

The lead continued to grow to start the second half, as a foul shot with 18:43 gave the Hawks their largest lead of the afternoon at 38-28.

A three-pointer in the Wildcats' ensuing possession by Valentino Thompson started a 9-0 run to get back into the contest. But a quick 7-1 spurt allowed UMES to go back up eight at 46-38 with 13:47 to play, capped by a dunk from Troy Snyder on the fast break.

Now down nine, the Wildcats used their own 7-1 run to get within three at 55-52 with 5:18 to play, and again found themselves down five with 4:10 left on the clock. After the final media timeout of the second half, the Wildcats made their run.

Trailing 59-54, Rashuan Rasheed hit a pair of free-throws before Thompson cut the deficit to one with a layup with 3:14 to play. Another layup by Thompson on the Wildcats next possession made it a 6-0 run and put the Wildcats ahead 60-59 with 2:26 left.

After UMES tied the match by only hitting the first of two free throws, 60-60, Griffin's layup with 1:02 put the Wildcats in front for good. Thompson hit the second of his two free-throws to move up three before UMES converted a layup with 24 seconds to play to cut it to 63-62. But senior Herb Dennis hit both of his two free-throws with 15 seconds left, forcing UMES into trying a last second three-pointer. Hakeen Baxter's shot from deep rimmed up to give the Wildcats the win.

Wilmington was led by Dennis, Rasheed, and Shaq Monroe-Gaskins who each scored 11 points in the game. Thompson and Tyrik Gass added 10 points each to put five Wildcats in double-figures for the contest. Monroe-Gaskin and Griffin added a team high six rebounds each while Dennis dished out a game high five assists.

The Wildcats are back for one more game in the 2013 calendar year, as they host Shippensburg in a nonconference contest at the WU Athletics Complex on New Year's Eve. Opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Wilmington returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action when it returns to the court, hosting South Division rival Philadelphia on Wednesday, January 8 at the WU Athletics Complex. The game is the second of a CACC double-header, with an approximate tip-off at 8 p.m.

SUBJECT: A Pair of Late Goals Lifts #3 LIU Post past #22 Wilmington, 3-1, in East Region Showdown

DATE: September 12, 2013

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. - - In an early season matchup of East Region powers and a pair of nationally ranked foes, No. 3 LIU Post scored a pair of goals late to top No. 22 Wilmington, 3-1, to kick start the University of Bridgeport Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Knights Field.

Moving into the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Men's National Poll at the No. 22 spot earlier in the week and sitting in third in the East Region, the Wilmington (2-1) men's soccer team battled back to respond with a goal, but fell late for its first loss of the year. Nationally third ranked and tops in the East Region, LIU Post scored a pair of goals with less than 10 minutes remaining to take the early season tilt.

After a slow start statistically, the Wildcats responded to outshoot the Pioneers, 13-12, in the second half to close the gap to 22-18 for the match.

Once the goal line was finally crossed, the scoring came frantically towards the end of the match. LIU Post was able to get on the board first, tallying a mark in the 73rd minute.

Two minutes later, the Wildcats knotted the score with a through ball to the left side. Elton Joe kept his point scoring streak alive with the pass to Lance Berry who was able to tie the game at the 74:10 mark of the contest, his first goal of the season.

The Wildcats kept the pressure on following their goal, putting the game's next three shots on the board over the next five minutes, including two in which Pioneer goalkeeper Marco Jorgensen was needed to make the save.

But it was LIU Post who responded to break the tie, as leading scorer Eivind Austboe volleyed in a cross coming from the left side for his fourth goal of the year at the 83:06 mark of the contest.

The Wildcats bounced back with a corner kick and back-to-back shots, but both missed the goal frame. The Pioneers were able to add onto the lead and essentially end the match with their third goal in the 88th minute, a long box to the top of the box which was finished off by Johann Kristjansson.

Joe led the Wildcats with six shots, four of which were on goal. Berry tallied three shots including the team's lone goal while Kris Michael and Sam Fahnboto recorded a pair of shots each. Frank Hall got the start in goal for the Wildcats and made three saves before turning it over to Spyros Stergiotis for the second half. Stergiotis recorded four saves in the second 45 minutes, but fell to 1-1 on the year with the loss.

The Pioneer's Jorgensen made nine stops in moving to 3-0 on the young season.

Wilmington will remain in Connecticut for one more contest in the UB Tournament. The Wildcats will play host Bridgeport on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the nightcap. Bloomfield will take on LIU Post to start the action on Saturday.

SUBJECT: Halftime Lead Slips Away for Wilmington Women's Basketball as Georgian Court Comes Back for 74-64 CACC Victory

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - A halftime lead didn't hold for the Wilmington University women's basketball team as Georgian Court shot 53.6 percent in the second half to come back for a 74-64 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at the Wellness Center on Wednesday night.

The Wildcats (2-7, 1-4 CACC) took a 33-27 lead into the halftime break, but the Lions (2-8, 1-3 CACC) responded with a 47 points second half, taking the lead for good on a three-pointer by Tara Steakin with 13:24 remaining in the contest.

Georgian Court had as large as a nine point lead in the first half, following a layup with 5:28 remaining on the clock. That is when the Wildcats made their move, scoring 19 of the next 23 points to end the half and go into the locker room with a six pint lead.

The team's leading scorer on the night, Lauren Brown got the run started with an old-fashioned three-point play, hitting a layup while being fouled with 4:58 to play. She hit the foul shot to complete the play before the Wildcats hit five more free-throws in the next 52 seconds to bring the score to 23-22.

Brown completed the comeback and extended the Wildcats' run to 11 straight points with a three-pointer, giving the visitors the lead at 25-22. Jasmine lead extended the lead to four points before Brown capped the run with another layup, making it a 15-0 run before the Lions got on the board again with 1:34 to play in the half. Tashea Plummer hit a jumper with 39 second left for the final bucket of the half, sending the Wildcats to the locker room with a six-point lead.

The second half saw three ties but only one lead change, and it came by the Lions' Steakin who's three-pointer broke a tied score and allowed the Lions to never look back.

Plummer layups on the next two possessions for the Wildcats' but they were to bring the Wildcats to within one-point of the Lions each time. After the second bucket by Plummer, Georgian Court ripped off a 23-7 run to open a commanding 17 point lead with 6:22 remaining in regulation.

A quick eight point spurt brought the Wildcats to within nine points with 4:53 to play, and they worked the deficit to as few as five at 69-64 after a layup by Theresa Mitchell. But the Lions wouldn't allow the Wildcats to get any closer the rest of the way, hitting their foul shots down the stretch to pull away with the 10 point victory.

Wilmington had three student-athletes in double-digits, led by Brown's 15 points off the bench. Cari Callaway finished with 14 points while Mitchell chipped in with 10 points off the bench while shooting 4-for-6 from the floor.

The Wildcats did not have an answer for the Lions' Ashiri Broadwater, however, as she finished with a game high 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting, adding 9-of-13 from the foul line. Liz Lawler added a double-double off the bench with 14 points and a game high 10 rebounds.

Wilmington's busy week is not over, as the team will head to Institute, W.Va. to play in the West Virginia State Toys for Tots Holiday Tournament this weekend. The Wildcats open the tournament against the host Yellow Jackets on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Tournament comes to a conclusion on Saturday against either St. Augustine's or Ursuline depending on the outcome of Friday's play.

SUBJECT: Eleven Home Contests Highlight the 2014 Wilmington Women's Lacrosse Schedule

DATE: January 9, 2014
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - There will be a multiple of chances to catch the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team this upcoming season, as third year head coach Jackie Trainer has announced the 2014 schedule, highlighted by 11 home contests.

Of the 17 regular season contests, 10 will be played the WU Athletics Complex while the Wildcats will host one night game at the Red Lion Christian Academy in early April.

"We have the great opportunity and privilege to play at our beautiful new complex a lot this year," Trainer said. "After last year, we are just excited to get back out there and play. It's great to have the familiarity of home fans, parents, and surroundings that will hopefully help us fulfill our expectations going into this season."

The season kicks off with three of the first games at home, starting with the season opener against Dowling on Saturday, March 1. Dowling was ranked 11th in the final Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II National Poll for the 2013 season.

The team then will open its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference season on the road at Nyack on March 4 before playing five of the next seven games at home to round out the month of March.

First year program District of Columbia comes to the WU Athletics Complex, as does second year program and in-state foe Delaware State in march. The Wildcats will also host Molloy College as a nonconference home game in the first month of the season.

Inside the CACC, the Wildcats will host CACC South Division foe Chestnut Hill, while also welcoming North Division foe Caldwell to Newark. In March, the Wildcats will take to the road against Holy Family and Georgian Court.

The month of April features five more games at the WU Athletics Complex, with only road games at Philadelphia and Chestnut Hill.

The month's first game will be a special featured event, as the Wildcats will host Dominican for a night contest at Red Lion Christian Academy in Bear, Delaware, on April 2.

Wilmington will also host Post, Holy Family, West Virginia Wesleyan, and Philadelphia at the WU Athletics Complex throughout the month of April. Saturday, April 19 against West Virginia Wesleyan is scheduled for Senior Day, the last chance to catch the Wildcats at home on a weekend.

SUBJECT: Second Half Scoring Drought Haunts Wilmington Men's Basketball, 58-51, at Goldey-Beacom

DATE: January 11, 2014
djl

WILMINGTON, Del. - - An extended scoreless streak midway through the second half harmed the Wilmington University men's basketball team, as Goldey-Beacom used that time to come back and take the lead for good and go on to a 58-51 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at the Joseph West Jones Center.

Leading 43-38 after a 9-0 run with 11:05 remaining in regulation, the Wildcats (6-10, 2-5 CACC) went the next 6:48 of game time without scoring a point, giving the Lightning (6-8, 4-4 CACC) time to operate.

During that span, the Lightning went on a 12-0 run to take a 50-43 lead with 7:15 showing on the scoreboard. Neither team was able to find the bottom of the next until Wilmington's Tyrik Gass put home a layup as he was fouled at the 4:17 mark.

Two minutes later, Ta'Vaune Griffin was able to convert a layup as he was fouled, sinking the foul shot for the three-point play to bring the Wildcats to within 52-49 with 2:14 remaining in regulation. But that would be as close as the Wildcats would get the rest of the way, as the Lightning extended the lead back out to seven and held on for the 58-51 win.

The Wildcats held the Lightning to shooting 33.9 percent for the game, but gave up 16 offensive rebounds that allowed Goldey-Beacom to take 21 more shots throughout the contest. Wilmington shot 18-of-41 from the floor (43.9 percent), including 5-of-15 from beyond the three-point arc. Wilmington also committed 19 turnovers on the afternoon, allowing Goldey-Beacom to lead, 19-10, on points off turnovers. The Lightning also led, 18-6, on second chance points.

The foul line proved to be a trouble spot for the Wildcats, as they went 10-of-23 from the line, compared to the Lightning's 12-of-19.

The Wildcat offense was led by Griffin's 11 points before he fouled out, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor but only 3-of-9 from the foul line. Shai Henry was the only other Wildcat to reach double digits, hitting 2-of-5 from the three-point arc and finishing with 10 points and six rebounds. Gass finished with a team high seven rebounds off the bench for the Wildcats.

Wilmington has a chance for a quick turnaround this week, as they welcome Georgian Court to the WU Athletics Complex for the first time in program history. It is the first season of Lions' men's program at Georgian Court. The Wildcats took a 69-54 victory on the road between the two programs earlier this season. Tuesday's tip is scheduled for 8 p.m.

SUBJECT: Comeback Runs Out of Steam as Goldey-Beacom Tops Wilmington Women's Basketball, 64-52

DATE: January 11, 2013

WILMINGTON, Del. - - An early second half surge had the deficit to as few as two points, but the Wilmington University women's basketball fell short on the road against cross-town rivals Goldey-Beacom, 64-52, on Saturday afternoon at the Joseph Jones West Center.

Sophomore Tenicia Spence hit five-three pointers , including two in the first five minutes of the second half as the Wildcats (4-10, 1-6 CACC) clawed to within two points at 42-40, but ran out of steam as Goldey-Beacom (7-8, 4-4 CACC) held on down the stretch.

Trailing 38-30 with 16:53 to play, Spence hit her first of three three-pointers in the second half to start 10-4 run for the visitors. Freshman Jocelyn Rodriguez hit her first bucket of the game to give the Wildcats five straight points before Tenicia Spence hit another three-pointer to make it 42-38 with 14:45 left on the clock.

On the team's next possession, Rodriguez hit another jumper from the foul line to make it as close as it would get in the second half at 42-40 with 13:54 remaining in regulation. The Lightning would then rattle off the next seven straight points, and go on a 12-2 run to go back up by double-digits.

Spence finished with a game high 25 points, hitting 5-of-9 from beyond the three-point arc. The sophomore also added a game high three steals. Rodriguez shot 3-of-4 from the floor off the bench for the Wildcats, finishing with seven points and three assists. Jenn Carr grabbed a team high 10 rebounds, four of which came on the offensive glass.

The first half saw the Wildcats start their comeback, as they were down by as many as 15 points with 6:27 remaining in the stanza. The team fought all the way back to as close as four points following a pair of foul shots by Spence, and headed into the locker room down six, 32-26.

The Lightning were led by Lillian Chukwueze's 17 points while Briana Richmond-Peters narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a game high 15 rebounds. Ten of Chukwueze's 17 points came from the charity stripe.

The Wildcats are back in action on Tuesday, as they return home to the WU Athletics Complex for another Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup against Georgian Court. The Lions took the first meeting of the season between the two programs, 74-64, in Lakewood, N.J. The Wildcats will tip off at 6 p.m.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Women's Basketball Hangs On Late To Take 65-62 Decision against Georgian Court

DATE: January 14, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's basketball team held off a furious second half comeback against Georgian Court, 65-62, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Tuesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Sophomore Tiaja Harrold tied the single game record with eight steals while also scoring 10 points and dishing out a team high four assists in helping the Wildcats (5-10, 2-6 CACC) fend off the Lions (3-11, 2-6 CACC) down the stretch. The Lions nearly overcame a 15 point halftime deficit, closing the gap to as few as two points in the final minute.

Wilmington got out to a big lead in the first half, turning a 4-4 tied game into a double-digit lead on the strength of a 17-5 run, capped by a fastbreak steal and ensuing layup by Tenicia Spence with 10:03 to play in the first half. The lead grew to as large as 18 points in the opening 20 minutes after Spence hit a three-pointer and followed it up with another layup, moving ahead 28-11. After the Lions hit a three-pointer, the Wildcats received a foul shot from Jennifer Carr before Tashea Plummer converted a layup as she was foul, and hitting the ensuing foul shot for the 32-14 lead with 5:27 left in the first half.

The Lions were able to whittle the score to 37-22 in favor of the Wildcats heading into the halftime break. Spence led the way with 18 first half points for the Wildcats.

The second half was a different story for the Wildcats, as they could only go 11-of-35 from floor in the second 20 minutes, shooting 31.4 percent compared to the Lions 44.1 percent. In all, the Lions outscored the Wildcats, 40-28, in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats held on down the stretch for the win.

Georgian Court scored the first 10 points of the second half, closing the gap to 37-32 with 15:18 to play in regulation. The Wildcats bounced back and scored the next six points to jump the margin back into double digits with 14:17 remaining. The lead was as large as 13 with 11:39 to play before the Lions made one final push to get back into the contest.

Trailing 54-43, the Lions went on a 10-2 run on the strength of 3-of-4 shooting from the floor and 4-of-4 shooting from the foul line to close within 56-53 with 4:42 to play. The Wildcats were able to keep the visitors at an arm's length, however, pushing the lead back out to eight points on a jumper by Harrold with 2:06 left on the scoreboard.

Georgian Court came back with a layup and four straight foul shots to get within 64-62 with only nine seconds remaining, but Spence was able to hit one of her two free throws with six second left, not allowing the Lions to get a good look from half court for the tie at the buzzer.

Spence finished with 35 points, the third most in a single game in the Wildcats' NCAA era. She also has the second most (36), coming earlier this season at Lancaster Bible. Plummer grabbed a team high 11 rebounds while Carr finished with 10 boards.

The five wins for the Wildcats are the most in a season since the 2009-10 team went 15-13 overall and 12-7 in the CACC.

Wilmington returns to action this Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex, as the Wildcats host North Division foe Bloomfield for a CACC doubleheader. The women begin the doubleheader at 1 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Men's Basketball Uses Three-Pointers To Defeat Georgian Court, 102-83

DATE: January 14, 2014
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - Six players reached double digits as the Wilmington University took down Georgian Court, 102-83, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the WU Athletics Complex on Tuesday night.

The 102 points marks the first time a Wilmington University basketball team, men or women, has reached the 100-point plateau in the NCAA era (2004-05 season). The men's previous high mark was 96 points, which was done twice in the 2007-08 season.

The high scoring affair was the product of a second half outburst, as the Wildcats (7-10, 3-5 CACC) scored 57 points in the second stanza, breaking an eight point halftime lead into as large as 32 in the second half.

The Wildcats did it from beyond the three-point arc, shattering a single-game record for three-pointers made in a contest. The Wildcats went 17-of-29 from deep, hitting 9-of-15 in the first half and 8-of-14 in the second half. The 17-made three-pointers were five more than the previous record, held at Caldwell on December 16, 2006. The 58.6 percent from three-point territory is the second highest among games with at least 10 three-pointers made.

One of those three-pointers gave the Wildcats the lead for good as Shaq Monroe-Gaskins hit one of his three bombs at the 9:35 mark of the first half, breaking a 24-24 tie and giving the home team the lead for good. Another three-pointer by Prophet Kates pushed the Wildcats' lead to nine before they settled for an eight point advantage going into the locker room, 45-37.

Back-to-back buckets to start the second half pushed the lead to 12 before a three-pointer by Herb Dennis and an alley-oop dunk by Ta'Vaune Griffin from Valentino Thompson got the crowd on its feet and gave the Wildcats a 60-42 lead with 15:27 left to play.

Drew Johnson started a 16-3 Wilmington run with a three-pointer, turning a 16 point lead into their largest of the evening at 89-57 with 5:22 remaining in regulation. Another three-pointer by Kates gave the Wildcats another 32-point lead at 94-62 with 3:54 remaining before the Lions cut it down to settle on the final score.

Fittingly enough, it was a three-pointer, the team's final of the night, that allowed them to break the 100-point barrier, as it was Kates' fourth and final trey to give the Wildcats a 102-77 advantage with 1:13 remaining.

Kates' finished with a career high 15 points, shooting 5-of-7 overall, 4-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc off the bench for the Wildcats. Shai Henry led the team with 16 points, shooting 6-of-10 from the floor, 2-of-5 from deep, while also grabbing a team high eight rebounds.

Monroe-Gaskins shot 3-of-5, all form beyond the three-point arc to score 12 points off the bench. Dennis also added 12 points for the Wildcats, shooting 5-of-9 from the floor, including 2-of-4 from deep. He also dished out four assists and recorded three steals.

Thompson scored 10 points while dishing out a game high six assists and adding five rebounds Griffin rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points as well. Griffin shot 4-of-5 from the floor, grabbed six rebounds, and recorded three blocks. Tyaire Ponzo-Meek recorded two three-pointers while Paul Moore added a trey to round out the hot shooting.

For the game, the Wildcats assisted on 26 of the team's 36 baskets, while only turning the ball over 15 times. Wilmington also out-rebounded the visitors, 41-35, for the game.

The Wildcats will look to keep the hot shooting going on Saturday, their next CACC contest. Wilmington welcomes North Division foe Bloomfield to the WU Athletics Complex for a CACC doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The men's game is scheduled for an approximate 3 p.m. tip.

SUBJECT: Fast Start Allows Bloomfield to Get Past Wilmington, 79-63, in Men's Basketball Action

NEWARK, Del. - - A quick start by Bloomfield stunned Wilmington on Saturday afternoon as the Deacons pulled away for a 79-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory at the WU Athletics Complex.

Visiting Bloomfield (10-6, 8-1 CACC) extended its winning streak to five straight games, jumping out to an 8-0 lead which took the air out of the Wilmington's (7-11, 3-6 CACC) sail before the Wildcats could recover.

Tyrik Gass put the Wildcats on the board with a layup with 15:28 remaining in the first half, but the Deacons used another 9-4 run to take their first double digit advantage at 17-6 with 11:55 on the board. After a slow first 10 minutes, the scoring picked up by both squads, but the Wildcats were never able to get closer than nine points during the rest of the first half, falling behind by as many as 20 points before the break. A three-pointer by Bloomfield's Mike Williams pushed the visitors lead to 40-20 with 2:41 remaining before the Wildcats cut it to a 17 point deficit going into the locker room.

The second half didn't get any easier for the home team, as the Wildcats could only close to as few as 15 points, and that was with their first possession of the second stanza. Another 14-1 run by Bloomfield in the middle of the second half gave the visitors their largest lead of the game, 68-37, with 8:29 left in regulation.

From that point, Dwayne Dixon and Dusan Kojic led a stretch in which the Wildcats outscored the Deacons, 26-11, with Dixon tallying eight points and Kojic scoring six. The run cut the largest deficit of the game in half for the Wildcats and settled the final score, 79-63.

Senior Herb Dennis led the Wildcats with 11 points while sophomore Ta'Vaune Griffin narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and a team high 10 rebounds while adding four blocked shots. Valentino Thompson scored six points but added six rebounds, a block and four steals in the losing effort.

Bloomfield took advantage of the Wildcats in the paint, outscoring Wilmington 38-26 in the lane. The Deacons were led by four players in double-digits, including a double-double from Claude Blue. He scored 12 points and added a game high 15 rebounds while Williams led the team with 16 points. Bloomfield won the game despite turning the ball over 15 times and only shooting 42.9 percent (27-for-63) from the floor.

The Deacons did, however, block a Wildcat shot nine times, and produced eight steals in the contest. They also held Wilmington to 21-of-67 shooting from the floor while not allowing the Wildcats to hit a three-pointer (0-for-12).

The Wildcats will look to get back to their winning way on the road next week starting on Wednesday. The team will next head to South Division rival Holy Family on January 22 for another CACC doubleheader. The men's game will follow the women and start approximately at 8 p.m.

SUBJECT: Strong Second Half Gives Bloomfield, 72-43, Women's Basketball Victory over Wilmington

DATE: January 18, 2014
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - An extended run to start the second half propelled Bloomfield to a 72-43 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory over Wilmington University on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Wilmington (5-11, 2-7 CACC) closed to within a five-point deficit, 28-23, to head into the halftime break, but Bloomfield (9-7, 7-2 CACC) came out and went on a 24-4 run over the first 12:12 of the second stanza to take control of the contest.

During the stretch, the Wildcats went 2-of-18 before Tenicia Spence hit a jumper with 7:48 remaining to bring the score to 55-29 in favor of the Deacons. The Wildcats went 6:17 of game time between buckets and another 5:00 before Spence's jumper found the bottom of the net with 7:48 to play.

Defense was the name of the game in the first half, as each team was held below 30 percent from the field. The Wildcats forced the Deacons into nine first half turnovers, creating five steals while the Wildcats turned the ball over 16 times as the Deacons recorded eight steals. Bloomfield shot 8-for-28 from the floor in the first half, compared to the Wildcats 6-for-25. Both teams converted nine free-throws, however.

Trailing by nine points late in the first half, the Wildcats gained some momentum going into the halftime break, scoring six of the next eight points. Tiaja Harrold responded to a Bloomfield three-pointer and a three of her own before Cari Callaway hit another three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining to close the game to 28-23.

The halftime break stopped the Wildcat momentum, however, and Bloomfield was able to regroup and come back in the second half and turn on the jets.

Spence led the Wildcats with 14 points and five steals, while Harrold and Callaway scored nine points each from off the bench. Jenn Carr grabbed a team high six rebounds, five of which were on the offensive glass.

The Deacons were led by a trio of players in double digits, paced by Morgan Taylor's game high 15 points. Tierra Scott added 14 points while Tianna Smith chipped in with 10 points, eight assists, and seven steals.

Wilmington will take to the road for their next two contests, starting with a midweek game on Tuesday at South Division foe Holy Family. The CACC doubleheader will begin with the women's game starting at 6 p.m. in Philadelphia.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Cheerleaders Compete at 2014 UCA National Championships; Earn Two Second Place Finishes

DATE: January 23, 2014
djl

ORLANDO, Fla. - - The Wilmington University cheerleading squad had another standout performance at the 2014 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships this past weekend, recording a pair of program firsts while also trying to defend their team national championship.

The competition started on Friday, January 17 with Wiley D. Wildcat performing in the open mascot division for the first tie in program history. Competing against universities like Southeastern Louisiana, Wichita State, Tennessee Tech, and perennial favorite and in-state rival Delaware, Wiley D. Wildcat earned a third place finish in his first competition. Performed by Brad Gilbert, Wiley D. Wildcat's routine consisted of a mash-up of popular Will Ferrell movies.

Also performing on Friday night, the coed duo of Ariel Ellixson and David Bellew set another program record for the Wildcats, finishing second out of 13 groups in the Coed Partner Stunt Finals. The pair beat duos from Sam Houston State, Central Florida, Stephen F. Austin, Oklahoma City, North Carolina State, Texas Tech, and Wichita State. Columbus State took home the National Championship in Coed Partner Stunt Finals. The second place finish is the best ever recorded by a pair from Wilmington University.

Competing in the Girls "4" Partner Stunt Finals, the group of Natalie Spiker, Gabby Mattera, Amanda Endicott, and Laureen Carney placed 10th overall. The all-girls group from Louisville took home the top prize.

Looking for their third straight Small Coed Division II National Championship, the Wildcat team came out on Saturday needing to hit three routines. The team earned its way into the finals against Columbus State, Colorado Mesa, Midwestern State, and Southern Indiana, again hitting their routine. But the Wildcats were unable to find the top of podium as the judges gave the 2014 Small Coed Division II National Championship to Columbus State. Less than two points away were the Wildcats in second place overall. In the past three years, the Wildcats have earned two national championship banners and a second place title.

In addition to the team performance, former Wildcat cheerleader and current Wildcat team manager Ashley Unruh auditioned for the USA Cheer Team. Unruh became the first Wildcat to earn a spot on the USA Cheer Team, comprised of the most talented female cheerleaders in the nation. The team competes at the International Cheer Union World Cheerleading Championships each year and is currently the five-time reigning world champions.

All the results can be found at www.varsity.com as well as each video performance of Wilmington and ever school that competed. Under the video tab, search for Wilmington to find videos of all the Wildcat performances.

SUBJECT: Three-Pointer at the Buzzer Sinks Wilmington Men's Basketball as Holy Family Steals 73-70 CACC Victory

DATE: January 23, 2014

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - A 25-foot jumper at the buzzer sank the hearts of the Wilmington University men's basketball team as Holy Family pulled off a 73-70 victory over the Wildcats in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the Campus Center on Thursday night.

The game featured five ties in the final seven minutes of action, the last coming with under a minute to play as Holy Family (14-5, 8-2 CACC) knotted the score at 70-70 with an Isaiah Gans dunk. Following a timeout, The Wildcats' (7-12, 3-7 CACC) shot by freshman Tyaire Ponzo-Meek was off the mark with the home team grabbing the rebound with 16 seconds remaining.

The Tigers set up a play in their own timeout, but settled for a 25-foot heave at the horn as Ervin Ezell came away the hero as the ball went through the net with no time remaining on the clock.

The buzzer beater capped the Tigers' second half comeback, as the Wildcats used a 15-5 run in the opening five minutes to gain their largest advantage of the night at 51-41.

The Wildcats used the three-point shot to open the double digit lead, starting with a trey from Shai Henry to break a 39-39 tie. Herb Dennis then went on a streak of hitting four consecutive shots from deep to answer any comeback from the Tigers. His fourth straight three-pointer gave the Wildcats a 54-44 advantage with 15:16 to play in regulation.

But the Tigers battled back, however, eventually squaring the score at 60-60 with 6:52 to play. That would start a string of see-saw action for the remainder of the contest, with the teams tying each other at 63, 66, 67, and 70 before Ezell's buzzer-beater.

Wilmington had five players in double figures, led by Dennis' 19 points. The senior shot 6-of-12 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from downtown. Dennis also dished out four assists, which was a team high along with Valentino Thompson. Thompson added 11 points and eight rebounds while also finishing with two steals.

Ponzo-Meek chipped in with 13 points off the bench, 11 of which came in the first half. The freshman went 6-of-6 from the foul line for the game. Henry hit four three-pointers on the night, scoring 14 points while grabbing three rebounds and dishing out two assists. Tyrik Gass was the final player in double digits, scoring 10 points while coming down with six rebounds.

NYACK, N.Y. - - A late game comeback fell short for the Wilmington University men's basketball team at Nyack as the Warriors used the three-point shot and free throws down the stretch to defeat the Wildcats, 74-71, on Saturday afternoon at Bowman Gymnasium.

Junior Valentino Thompson secured his first double-double as a Wildcat (7-13, 3-8 CACC) while Shai Henry poured in a career best 19 points but it wasn't enough as the Warriors (7-11, 5-6 CACC) converted 10-of-17 from beyond the arc to take the victory.

The visitors started hot, turning a one point lead into a 19-10 advantage in the opening minutes of the first half. After Dennis hit another jumper, Henry finished the run with five straight points, hitting his only three-pointer of the game before laying one home for the nine point lead.

Trailing by 10, the Wildcats rattled off six of the next seven points to cut the deficit to five points with 6:10 to play. Still down five with 4:39 showing on the clock, a layup from Tyaire Ponzo-Meek put it at a three point contest, the closest it has been since the first half. Ponzo-Meek cut into the deficit even further with a pair of free-throws with 1:03 remaining, bringing the Wildcats to within two points at 69-67.

A layup and two free throws by the Warriors kept the Wildcats at bay in the final minute, taking a five point lead with 23 seconds to play. The Wildcats' Shaq Monroe-Gaskins hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds on the board, but an offensive rebound on a missed free throw allowed the Warriors sealed the victory for the home team.

SUBJECT: Jenn Carr's Second Double-Double Leads Wilmington Women's Basketball, 85-61, Past Concordia

DATE: February 1, 2014
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - A total team effort by the Wilmington University women's basketball team led to an 85-61 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Concordia on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The game was delayed for a half an hour due to a leak on the court, but that didn't stop the Wildcats (6-14, 3-10 CACC) offensively as they produced their best shooting percentage of the season (28-of-61, 45.9 percent). The Wildcats also forced Concordia (0-19, 0-12 CACC) into 29 turnovers which turned into 31 points at the other end.

Junior Jenn Carr led the way with her second double-double of the season, scoring a season high 12 points while tying her season high with 11 rebounds. Senior Lauren Brown was nearly perfect from the floor, shooting 6-of-7 from the field, missing her only three-pointer of the game, while adding 2-of-3 from the foul line for 14 points off the bench. Sophomore Tenicia Spence led the Wildcats with 18 points and three steals on the afternoon. All 12 Wildcats that saw action on Saturday found their way into the scoring column.

Brown put the Wildcats ahead for the good in the first half, hitting the first of her two free throws with 6:30 remaining to break a 20-20 tie. It was the sixth tie of the first half, as the game was back and forth through the first 14 minutes of action.

A 5-0 spurt by the Wildcats opened an eight point lead for the home team, as Brown converted an old fashioned three-point play followed by a pair of free throws from freshman Jocelyn Rodriguez. Carr hit the final bucket of the first half with 24 seconds remaining, keeping the Wildcats ahead by eight points heading into the halftime break.

Concordia came out with back-to-back buckets to start the second half before the Wildcats took their lead to double digits. Spence started the 6-0 run with a layup while Tashea Plummer and Auryonah Nash followed with back-to-back baskets to put the Wildcats up 45-34 with 16:57 remaining.

The lead grew to as large as 25 points for the Wildcats after another 6-0 run turned a 14 point lead into a 76-56 advantage for the first time on the afternoon. A free throw by Taylor Carter and back-to-back baskets by Brown and Tiaja Harrold moved the lead to 83-58 with 2:30 to play.

The 24 point victory was the largest margin of victory since the Wildcats defeated Chestnut Hill, 67-42, on January 26, 2010.

The only spot on the floor that wasn't working for the Wildcats on Saturday was from beyond the three-point arc, as they went 1-of-6 from deep against the Clippers. The Wildcats shot 16-of-27 from the floor in the second half and finished the game 28-of-38 from the charity stripe.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Wildcats, as they now look forward to winning their second straight contest for the first time this season. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - In a battle against the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division leading Philadelphia, the Wilmington University women's basketball team took the Rams to the brink before falling, 82-73, on Wednesday night at the Gallagher Center.

The Wildcats (6-15, 3-11 CACC) nearly gave the Rams (14-5, 12-0 CACC) its first conference loss of the season, closing the gap to as few as four points in the final minutes. Philadelphia was able to hold on in the end, beating the Wildcats in the teams' closest contest since a seven point game on February 10, 2011.

Wilmington forced one of the best ball controlled teams into 18 turnovers on the nights, turning them into 21 points, 16 of which came in the second half. The match also turned into a test of depth for both teams has the Wildcats narrowly outscored the Rams, 43-42, in points off the bench.

It was one player off the bench for the Rams that the Wildcats were unable to contain however, as Philadelphia's Najah Jacobs scored a game high 29 points off the bench, converting on 18-of-19 from the foul line in the effort. Alex Heck added 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for the home team.

The Wildcats had five players score off the bench, led by freshman Jasmine Lee's second double-double of the season. Lee scored 10 of her 11 points in the second half, adding 11 rebounds for the feat. She also secured a double-double against USciences.

Sophomore Tiaja Harrold scored nine points off the bench and tied Lee with a team high 11 rebounds on Wednesday night. Classmate Tenicia Spence led the Wildcats with 16 points, shooting 6-of-16 from the floor.

The game was close from start to finish, as Philadelphia's largest lead was 13 with 14:22 remaining in regulation. From that point, the Wildcats went on a 14-5 run to close the gap to 61-57 with 6:36 showing on the scoreboard.

Tashea Plummer, Lauren Brown, and Lee hit on three straight buckets to start the run with six straight points. Harrold and Lee hit jumpers to keep the deficit at seven before a bucket by Spence closed the gap to 61-55 with 9:09 to play. Lee finished the run with another jumper to bring the game to a four point contest.

Harrold converted a layup a minute later to bring the Wildcats back to within four points again, but then the Rams went on a run of their own. Philadelphia used an 8-2 run over the next minute and a half to open up a double digit lead at 71-61 with 4:00 remaining in the game. Another late push brought the Wildcats back to within six at 77-71 with 28 seconds remaining, and again at 79-73 on a Taylor Carter layup, but with only 17 seconds to play. The Rams hit three of their final four foul shots to close out the victory.

The Rams had four players in double figures, as Tori Arnao added 15 points to follow Jacobs' game high 29. Monica Schacker chipped in with 12 points to go along with Heck's 11. Arnao also concluded with a double-double, securing 12 rebounds.

SUBJECT: Bench Leads Wilmington Women's Basketball but Dominican takes 78-67 CACC Decision

DATE: February 8, 2014
djl

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - - The bench led the Wilmington University women's basketball team at Dominican, but the Chargers pulled away late to take a 78-67 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at the Hennessy Center on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Jasmine Lee scored 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and 5-of-6 from the foul line while sophomore Tiaja Harrold added 10 points and junior Tashea Plummer led the Wildcats (6-16, 3-12 CACC) with 10 rebounds, all three players coming off the bench. Dominican (9-12, 7-7 CACC) turned a two point halftime advantage and even an early second half tied ball game into a double digit victory with a strong second half.

The Chargers had as large as a 12 point first half lead with 11:18 to play before the break when the Wildcats made their run to get back into the contest. Over the next 6:09 of game action, Wilmington would use a 12-2 run to close the gap to within two at 30-28 with 5:09 to play after a pair of free throws by Plummer. Down nine, Taylor Carter hit a three pointer before Lee and Plummer each hit both of their free throws to cut the deficit to a single bucket.

The Chargers opened the leaf back to six before jumpers from Carter and Auryonah Nash closed the scoring for the opening half, as the Wildcats went into the break trailing, 34-32.

Senior Kathryn Franklin opened the second half with her only field goal of the match, tying the match at 34. The Chargers responded with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession before Tenicia Spence brought the Wildcats back to within a point with a two-point jumper with 18:36 to play in regulation. But that would be the closest the Wildcats would come, as they were unable to get over the hump against their North Division foes the rest of the contest.

Leading 52-49 with 9:39 showing on the clock, the Dominican used a 9-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by Shannon McGill to take a double-digit lead with 7:02 remaining. A three-pointer by the Wildcats' Nash brought the visitors back within five at 72-67, but with only 38 to play, it was too little too late.

Lee and Harrold were the only Wildcats to reach double digit in scoring while leading scorer Spence scored six points on 3-of-8 shooting. Harrold added six rebounds while Jenn Carr grabbed seven boards on Saturday, four of which were on the offensive glass. Freshman Jocelyn Rodriguez tallied eight points and three steals while Nash finished with five points, three assists, and a steal.

Wilmington shot 41 percent from the floor, compared to the Chargers' 37.9 percent, but turned the ball over 25 times which turned into 25 Dominican points. The Wildcats went 2-of-9 from three-point territory while Dominican knocked down 4-for-13 from deep.

The Wildcats are two-thirds through their three-game road trip, as they remain on the road for one more contest next week. The Wildcats return to playing in the CACC South Division with a 6 p.m. contest at USciences on Tuesday night.

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - - Two Dominican College players recorded double-doubles to lead the Chargers to a 90-77 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference cross divisional victory over the Wilmington University men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at the Hennessy Center.

The WildcatsS (9-15, 5-10 CACC) had five student-athletes in double digits, led by Valentino Thompson and Herb Dennis' 14 points, but it wasn't enough as Dominican (14-7, 10-4 CACC) led by as many as 13 points and hit 5-of-7 free throws down the stretch to run away late.

The Chargers led 48-39 at the halftime break, but the Wildcats attempted their comeback halfway through the second frame.

With the Dominican lead at 10, 57-47, the Wildcats went on an 8-2 run to close to within four for the first time since the 12:15 mark of the first half. Senior Dusan Kojic started the spurt with a layup, followed by a steal and layup by freshman Tyaire Ponzo-Meek nine seconds later. After a Dominican score, Dennis put home a layup and a pair of free throws on back-to-back possessions to get within 59-55 with 11:17 to play.

Junior Tyrik Gass once again cut the deficit to four points with a jumper with 10:47 left in regulation at 61-57, but that would be as close as the Wildcats would get the rest of the way. Wilmington kept the game in single digits for most of the second half before Dominican's A.J. Burton hit one of two from the foul line to go up 85-75 with 1:01 to play. From there, the Chargers extended the lead to 13 to finish the game, on the strength of their late free throw shooting.

Shai Henry and Kojic added 11 points each with Kojic shooting a perfect 5-for-5 while grabbing a team high nine rebounds. SUBJECT: Three-Pointer at the Buzzer Falls Short as Felician Escapes Men's Basketball Contest, 70-67, at Wilmington

DATE: February 15, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - - A game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer hit the front rim for Shai Henry and the Wilmington University men's basketball team as Felician took a 70-67 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at the WU Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats (9-17, 5-12 CACC) scored the first six points of the competition but needed to battle from behind for a majority of the contest, keeping it close down the stretch to set up the game-tying attempt from straight on. Felician (6-17, 4-12 CACC) had as large as a 12 point lead in the second half before hanging on late to escape with the victory.

After coming out with six straight points, all from junior Rashaun Rasheed, the Wildcats saw their lead disappear as the Golden Falcons responded by scoring 15 of the next 17 points to grab a 15-8 lead with 14:26 to play in the opening half. Felician would not relinquish the lead from that point forward.

The first half lead would not get any bigger than seven with the Wildcats closing to within a single point with 5:55 to play after a layup from freshman Drew Johnson. Senior Herb Dennis cut the deficit to three point with 1:42 to play in the first half on a jumper before Felician's Wilmington, Del. native Tim Massado sank a jumper with 24 seconds remaining for the final bucket. Felician carried a 37-32 lead into the locker room.

With the visitors continuing to lead by seven with 14:51 left in regulation, the Golden Falcons hit a three-pointer and a layup to go ahead 53-41, their largest lead of the contest.

From there, the Wildcats used a 14-3 run to close the gap once more on the strength of three-pointer from senior Shaq Monroe-Gaskins and Johnson, and capped by a pair of free throws from Dennis with 4:48 showing on the clock.

A Valentino Thompson layup on their next offensive possession again cut the deficit to a single point with 4:04 to play, but the Wildcats could not get over the hump as the Golden Falcons held on.

Four straight free throws quickly brought the Felician lead out to five points before a layup from Johnson and 1-of-2 form the line by senior Dusan Kojic brought the deficit back down to two. Felician extended the lead back to four with 1:02 remaining before another pair of free throws by Dennis had the game to one possession once more with 45 seconds to play.

Felician's Jamal Reid missed the front end of a pair at the line, giving the Wildcats a chance in the final moments. The out of bounds play from the near corner found Henry at the top of the arc, but his three-pointer hit the front rim as the buzzer sounded.

The Wildcats' shooting numbers were slightly below their season's average but had a chance at the free throw line. They went 22 times, two more than visiting Felician, but hit 15, missing five of the seven in the first half. Felician went 14-of-20 from the foul line, hitting 12-of-18 in the second half.

Johnson led the Wildcats offensively for the second game in a row, scoring 13 points off the bench. The freshman shot 6-of-11 from the floor, hitting his only thre-epointer of the game. Thompson added 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Rasheed added 11 points and five rebounds while Dennis rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points, while adding a team high five assists, and going 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.

The Wildcats have a pair of CACC games left in the regular season and need both, with some help, to find a way into the CACC Tournament. The final chance to catch the Wildcats at home is on Tuesday, as they welcome cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom to the WU Athletics Complex.

Prior to the start of competition on Tuesday, the Wildcats will honor a quartet of seniors playing in their final home game. Senior Night festivities will be centered on Herb Dennis, Shaq Monroe-Gaskins, Prophet Kates, and Dusan Kojic.

Mathematically eliminated from the CACC Tournament, the Wildcats (7-17, 4-13 CACC) get to play the spoiler in their final games of the season and it started today against Felician (10-13, 8-8 CACC) who is fighting to represent the North Division. The victory was also the Wildcats first against the Golden Falcons since the 2009-10 season, snapping a three-game losing streak in the all-time series.

The Wilmington lead first reached double digits with 9:28 to play in the first half following a pair of made free throws from Tenicia Spence. The sophomore also gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the first half at 33-18 with 3:27 to play converting a steal into a layup at the other end of the court.

Defense was key for the Wildcats, as they force the Golden Falcons into 14 first half turnovers, collecting five steals and turning them into seven points at the other end. The Wildcats also collected 10 offensive rebounds in the opening 20 minutes, putting eight second chance points on the board.

Taylor Carter and Spence built the Wildcats lead back up to 15 to start the second half, with a pair of buckets from Carter sandwiched around a steal and layup by Spence.

Felician made a push in the middle of the second half, cutting the deficit to as few as three points with 11:24 to play. The Golden Falcons used a 10-2 run to turn an 11 point deficit into a 50-47 ballgame with more than half the second stanza to play.

But the Wildcats responded with a 9-0 run of their own, capped by an offensive rebount and put back by Tashea Plummer, giving the home team a 59-47 lead with 9:16 to play. From there, the Golden Falcons could only close to single digits on two occasions before the Wildcats closed out the contest for the victory.

Spence finished with a game high 33 points, shooting 12-of-23 from the floor and adding 8-of-10 from the foul line. She also did it at the defensive end, collecting six steals while dishing out two assists with only one turnover. SUBJECT: Another Last Second Defeat for Wilmington Men's Basketball, 66-63, as Game-Tying Three Falls Short on Senior Night against Goldey-Beacom

DATE: February 18, 2014
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - Another second half comeback fell a hair short for the Wilmington University men's basketball team, as a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer hit the front rim and Goldey-Beacom took a 66-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory on Tuesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Playing in front of their home crowd for the final time in the 2013-14 season and with hopes of keeping their playoff chances alive, the Wildcats (9-18, 5-13 CACC) battled back from a nine point halftime deficit to take a one point lead with 3:46 remaining, but couldn't hold on down the stretch.

The Lightning (10-14, 8-10 CACC) scored on their ensuing possession to retake the lead, 60-59, with 3:30 to play and never relinquished the lead, fighting off every attempt by the Wildcats to claw back. Wilmington brought it back to within one on a pair of free throws from senior Shaq Monroe-Gaskins, and again on a layup by Valentino Thompson with 1:02, but couldn't never get over the hump and retake the lead.

Trailing by three with two seconds remaining, Thompson missed both ends of his free throws, but Rashaun Rasheed came down with the offensive rebound and passed it back to Monroe-Gaskins standing outside the three-point arc. Looking to tie the game at the buzzer, Monroe-Gaskins attempt fell narrowly short, mathematically eliminating the Wildcats from playoff contention.

The Wildcats needed to win their final two contests of the season, and finish in a three-way tie with Chestnut Hill and Goldey-Beacom for the fourth and final playoff spot. The tie-breaker would have fell the Wildcats' way if all three teams finished with seven CACC wins.

The foul line harmed the Wildcats on Tuesday night, as they finished 15-of-26 from the charity stripe for the game, 13-of-23 in the second half. Goldey-Beacom hit 14-of-18 from the foul line, including 12-of-16 in the second half to hold off the Wildcats.

Monroe-Gaskins, one of three seniors playing their final game at the WU Athletics Complex on Tuesday night, led the way with 13 points for the Wildcats. Rasheed was the only other Wildcat to reach double figures with 10 points. Senior Herb Dennis scored eight points to go along with four steals and three assists to cap his amazing home career while senior Dusan Kojic grabbed four rebounds and scored two points while adding two assists in his final home game as well.

The two were tightly matched throughout the game, as Wilmington turned 12 Goldey-Beacom turnovers into 13 points while the Lightning turned nine Wildcat turnovers into 11 points. Each team scored 30 points in the paint while Goldey-Beacom narrowly outscored Wilmington, 14-12, in second chance points.

Distance shots were hard to come by on Tuesday as Goldey-Beacom converted only 2-of-13 from beyond the three-point arc with Wilmington going 4-of-19 from deep.

Wilmington closes out its 2013-14 season on the road on Saturday when the Wildcats head to North Division foe Caldwell. The men's game will start the CACC doubleheader, with a tip scheduled for 1 p.m.

NEWARK, Del. - - Wilmington University women's soccer head coach Josh Ruggiero has had a busy offseason preparing for the 2014 season with the announcement of 10 student-athletes signing National Letters of Intent earlier this year. The group consists of three junior college transfers and seven high school standouts.

Katelyn Becker, Dana Hansen, and Kellie MacIntosh each played two seasons at separate junior colleges while Jessica Carpenter, Carin Essex-Arline, Dana Jones, Chandler Lages, Gabrielle LeGendre, Sierrah Taylor, and Morgan Webster will join the Wildcats in the fall after completing their final season in high school this year.

"This group has balance," Ruggiero, who just finished his sixth season at the helm of the Wildcats, said. "We have players who are going to come in and effect each phase of our team. What makes this group so special is that each one has the ability to contribute in multiple areas; they are all versatile. Each one brings something different but they are all ready to come in and be Wildcats."

Becker (Yardville, N.J./Hamilton High School East) played two seasons at Mercer County Community College, helping the team to a 10-7-1 overall record and 7-2 in the Garden State Athletic Conference in 2013. The team reached the NJCAA Region 19 Championship game, falling in overtime. Becker, playing all over the field, scored four goals and added three assists as a sophomore.
