CENTERVILLE, Mass. ? The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced today its 2013 Division I Field Hockey All-Star teams Friday and sophomore Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany) and freshman Esmee Peet(Zeewolde, The Netherlands) represented the University of Delaware as second team honorees.
The teams are comprised of student-athletes from a possible 88 institutions from 17 different conferences. The balloting was completed by head coaches within the ECAC Division I Field Hockey membership.
The Blue Hen duo of Patzner and Peet were the lone Colonial Athletic Association honorees as they guided No. 14 Delaware to one of the most successful seasons in school history following a program record 17 victories. UD earned both CAA regular season and tournament championships en route to a NCAA Tournament berth under head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof, the NFHCA Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year. The Hens finished 1-1 in the NCAA Tournament following a play-in game win over Liberty before falling to No. 3 North Carolina.
Patzner has garnered multiple accolades this season as she was also named a Longstreth/NFHCA Third Team All-American and a member of the Longstreth/NFHCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team. Patzner was also recognized as a First Team All-CAA and All-Tournament team honoree after finishing the 2013 campaign by leading the CAA with 41 points on a league-best 16 goals and nine assists. Her 41 points ties for fourth in Delaware single-season history while the 16 goals is good for seventh in a single season.
Peet posted an impressive freshman campaign as she was both the CAA Rookie and Player of the Year while earning Longstreth/NFHCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team honors. She was also named to the All-CAA First Team and All-Rookie Team while picking up Synapse Sports Rookie of the Year, All-Rookie Team and Second Team All-America accolades. Peet re-wrote the Blue Hen history books as she set a new freshman record with 32 points on 13 goals and six assists in 2013.
University of Maryland senior teammates Jill Witmer and Ali McEvoy took home Player of the Year honors, with Witmer garnering the Offensive Player of the Year distinction and McEvoy earning the Defensive Player of the Year award. University at Albany first year midfielder Paula Heuser was named the Rookie of the Year.
