FAIRFAX, Va. – Junior Nino Bastianelli tallied his second straight technical fall, and freshman Kiran Srikanth posted his first collegiate major decision, but Brown University wrestling dropped a 19-15 contest at George Mason University on Saturday evening at EagleBank Arena.

Completing the first weekend of the dual meet portion of their season, the Bears (0-2) opened the match with an 8-0 lead and remained within 16-15 heading to the final bout before the host Patriots (7-3) emerged with the win.

“Similar to last night, we wrestled hard but just came up on the wrong end of the team score,” Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. “Overall, we had a lot of positive signs this weekend, especially with a young team on the road for the first time in the dual season.”

Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) notched his 11th win of the season and his third technical fall of the year while Srikanth (Pullman, Wash.) posted his first collegiate major decision in just his fourth career match. Sophomore Brandon Kui (Wayne, N.J.) and senior Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) each registered wins via decision to round out the Bears’ four winners on the night.

Kui opened the match with a 3-1 sudden-victory decision over Paul Pierce at 184 pounds. With the scored tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation, Kui triumphed with a takedown in overtime.

Bastianelli followed with a 19-3 technical fall – his second tech fall in as many nights – over Ram Montalvo at 197 pounds, making the match score 8-0. Leading 7-1 after two periods, Bastianelli extended his lead with 12 points in the third period, including a 4-point near fall, two takedowns, and reversal.

At 125 pounds, Keeley moved the Bears’ lead to 11-4 with an 11-6 win over Talha Farooq. Keeley began with a 6-4 advantage at the end of the first period and pushed the margin to 9-4 at the close of the second en route to the win.

After the Bears fell behind 16-11, Srikanth tallied a 12-2 major decision over Justin Yorkdale at 165 pounds to slice the deficit to 16-15 in the team score. Srikanth gained leads of 2-0 at the end of the first period and 7-1 at the end of the second period on his way to the victory.

Next, Brown competes in a pair of EIWA duals on Sunday, Jan. 19 – at Bucknell (noon) and at Franklin & Marshall (5:00 p.m.).
