Dover, Del. (Feb. 17, 2018) --- The Delaware State men’s basketball team added another chapter in its frustrating season, coughing up a four-point lead in the final 79 seconds of a 66-63 MEAC loss to Florida A&M in Memorial Hall today.

The Rattlers won for the second time in the last three games to improve to 6-23 overall and 5-8 in the MEAC. The Hornets dropped their 21st game in a row to fall to 2-25 and 0-12.

After trailing 37-30 at the break, Delaware State started strong in the second half to pull ahead. The Hornets scored the first 12 points of the half, and opened up a 42-37 lead on a jumper by Artem Tavakalyan with 14:22 left to play.

Three-pointers by Marquis Collins and Kavon Waller, and a jumper by Jonathan Walker on consecutive possessions gave DSU a 54-47 lead at the 7:22 mark of the second half.

Florida A&M answered with an 8-0 run, and regained the lead, 55-54, on a lay-up by Desmond Williams with 4:23 remaining in the game.

Delaware State scored seven of the next nine points, and opened up a 61-57 lead on a Collins lay-up with 1:24 left.

Florida A&M scored on its next two possessions and pulled ahead for good, on a three-ball by Justin Ravenel with 40 seconds showing on the second half clock.

The Rattlers led 64-63 with the ball, but committed a turnover with just less than seven seconds left. The Hornets, however, could not take advantage.

Williams hit two more free throws for the Rattlers with 1.7 second remaining.

A desperation attempt from beyond half court by DSU’s Collins fell short, giving Florida A&M a two-game sweep against the Hornets this season.

Ravenel led four Florida A&M players in double figures with a game-high 20 points, while Williams added 19 for the Rattlers.

Collins was high scorer for Delaware State with 18 points, highlighted by a career-best five three-point field goals (5-8). Walker chipped in 11 points for the Hornets.

The Hornets return to action at home on Monday (Feb. 19) against Coppin State. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Dover, Del. (Feb 17) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets were defeated by the Florida A&M Rattlers 73-65, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.

Lanayjha Ashe scored eight of her 11 points in the first quarter, including two three-pointers. However, DSU trailed 20-18 heading into the second quarter.

The Lady Hornets tightened up on defense in the second quarter only allowing eight points in the period. DSU scored 12 of their 16 points in the quarter from the paint.



Syonah Williams scored six of her eight points during the quarter.



Williams blocked a shot on and then scored a layup up on the other end, giving the Lady Hornets a 34-28 lead with 22 seconds left in the half. Delaware State entered halftime leading by the same score.



Florida A&M scored 26 points in the third quarter, including six three-point field goals. A three-pointer by Dawn King gave the Rattlers a 49-47 lead with 2:08 left in the quarter.



Delaware State trailed 54-53 entering the fourth quarter.



With 1:47 left in the game NaJai Pollard spun in the lane and banked in a difficult shot to cut the deficit to just one, at 66-65.



The Rattlers responded with an 8-0 run to end the game.



Delaware State made 26-of-70 field goal attempts (37.1%), but only 2-of-18 on three-point attempts (11.1%).



NaJai Pollard led DSU with 20 points 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals.



Arion Jackson and Lanayjha Ashe combined for 21 points, and Syonah Williams recorded eight points, five rebounds, and five blocks (season high) for the Lady Hornets.



Florida A&M shot 24-of-62 from the field (38.7%) and 14-of-29 from beyond-the-arc (48.3%).



Ecenur Yurdakul led three Rattlers in double figures with 23 points.



Up next for the Lady Hornets is a contest vs Coppin State, on Monday Feb. 19th. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.

Dover, Del. (Feb. 19. 2018) --- Redshirt freshman forward Marquis Collins led four Delaware State players in double figures with 23 points in the Hornets’ 69-51 MEAC men’s basketball victory over Coppin State in Memorial Hall Monday evening. DSU’s first MEAC win of the season snapped a 21-game losing streak since a 68-55 victory over Div. II Georgian Court on Nov. 25, 2017. It’s also the Hornets’ first win against a Div. I opponent this season.

Saleick Edwards came off the bench to add a career-high 18 points, while Artem Tavakalyan and Simon Okolue tallied 11 points each for the Hornets, who improve to 3-25 overall and 1-12 in the MEAC this season.

Coppin State (5-24; 5-9) was led in scoring by Charles Andrews-Fulton with 14 points. He also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

Despite hitting just eight-of-23 first half shots (34.8%), including 1-of-13 from three-point range (7.7%), the Hornets held a 24-19 lead at the break.

Coppin State was 7-for-26 from the field (26.9%), including 3-of-16 from beyond the arc (18.8%), in the first half.

The Hornets led 30-26 before pulling away for good. DSU outscored Coppin State 17-4 over the next four-and-a-half minutes, and opened up a 47-30 lead on a three-pointer by Tavakalyan with 12:17 left to play. Simon Okolue scored seven points, while Tavakalyan and Collins tallied five each during the spurt.

Delaware State led 69-46, matching its biggest lead of the game, after two free throws by Edwards with 1:07 in the game.

The Hornets shot 51.6% from the field in the second half, knocking down 16 of their 31 shots, including 5-of-14 from three-point range.

Delaware State begins a two-game road swing with a visit to Howard on Saturday (Feb. 24). Game time is 4 p.m. in Washington, D.C. The Hornets will also visit Maryland-Eastern Shore on Feb. 26 (7:30 pm) before closing out the regular season at home against Morgan State on Mar. 1 at 7:30 pm.

… Collins also tied for the DSU lead with seven rebounds and dished out a career-high four assists in the game. He has scored 90 points in his last five contests (18.0 avg.) to raise his season average to 9.4 points per game

Dover, Del. (Feb. 22, 2018) --- Delaware State University has announced that head men’s basketball coach Keith Walker and head women’s coach Barbara Burgess were relieved of their duties today after being informed their contracts will not be renewed for next season.

The Hornet men have a 3-25 overall record and 1-12 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with Walker at the helm this season. Since appointed as DSU head coach with 10 games left in the 2013-14 regular season, Walker posted a 43-96 record (27-44 MEAC) with the Hornets.

Keith Johnson, Delaware State Associate Men’s Head Coach, has been appointed as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2017-18 season.

The DSU women’s basketball team has a 5-21 overall record and 4-9 mark in MEAC contests under Burgess this season. She compiled a 17-69 record (12-33 MEAC) since appointed as head coach of the Lady Hornets prior to the 2015-16 season.

Assistant coach Kyle Adams will serve as DSU interim women’s basketball head coach for the rest of the 2017-18 campaign.

“We thank coach Walker and coach Burgess for their service to the University and wish them well in their future endeavors,” said Mary Hill, Delaware State Interim Director of Athletics.

The Delaware State women and men have three regular season games remaining before competing in the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament Mar. 5-10 in Norfolk, Va.

The Hornet teams return to action on Saturday at Howard University in Washington, D.C. DSU’s women and men will also visit Maryland-Eastern Shore on Feb. 26 before wrapping up the regular season at home against Morgan State on Mar. 1.

Princess Anne, Md. (Feb. 26, 2018) --- Delaware State suffered through one of its coldest shooting spells of the season in a 59-47 loss to Maryland-Eastern Shore in a MEAC men’s basketball contest at the Hychte Center Monday evening.

The Hornets were just 17-for-56 from the field (30.4%), including 4-of-16 from three-point range (25.0%), to fall to 3-27 overall and 1-14 in the MEAC this season.

Maryland-Eastern Shore improved to 7-24 and 3-13.

Tyler Jones was top scorer for the Hawks with 21 points to lead all players and also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Jones was 8-for-12 from the field and 4-of-4 at the free throw line.

Cameron Bacote came off the bench to add 11 points for the MDES.

Simon Okolue was high scorer for Delaware State with 12 points (4-6 FG; 4-5 FT). He also led the Hornets with eight rebounds.

Marquis Collins chipped in 10 points for DSU.

Delaware State led 11-6 before the Hawks began to take control of the game.

MDES scored 18 of the next 20 points, and opened up a 23-13 lead on a three-pointer by Logan McIntosh at the 4:57 mark of the first half.

The Hawks led 25-17 at the break.

The Hornets only trailed 41-33 at the 10-minute mark of the second half, but could get no closer. Colen Gaynor capped off a 13-3 MDES run with a lay-up to give the Hawks their biggest lead, 54-36, with 2:55 left to play.

Delaware State will close out the 2017-18 regular season at home on Thursday (Mar. 1) against Morgan State. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. following the DSU/Morgan State women’s contest.

DSU’s six senior players will be honored prior to the contest.

Dover, Del. (Mar. 1, 2018) --- Delaware State led by 19 points midway through the second half before holding off a late Morgan State rally in an 87-80 MEAC men’s basketball victory over the Bears in the regular season finale for both teams in Memorial Hall Thursday evening.

The Hornets, who dropped their first 12 MEAC contests, won for the second time in the last four games to close out their 2017-18 conference schedule with a 2-14 record (4-27 overall).

Morgan State wrapped up the regular season with a 7-9 conference record and 11-18 overall mark.

Delaware State center Simon Okolue (sr.) led all players with a career-high 24 points, highlighted by 11-for-14 shooting from the field.

Fellow senior Artem Tavakalyan added 22 points on 6-for-9 shooting, including 5-of-9 on three-point attempts. The five three-pointers matched his career high. He also knocked down five threes vs. North Carolina A&T on Jan. 8.

Jonathan Mitchell (so.) came off the bench to contribute 12 points (5-7 FGs) to the win for the Hornets.

Martez Cameron and Tiwain Kendley led five Morgan State double-figure scorers with 16 points each.

Delaware State’s Saleick Edwards nailed a three-point shot at the first half buzzer to give the Hornets a 37-34 lead at the break.

DSU led 38-37 before taking control of the game.

The Hornets outscored the Bears 22-4 over the next six minutes, and opened up a 60-41 lead on a three-pointer by Tavakalyan with13:15 left to play. Okolue (4-4 FG) and Tavakalyan (3-3 3ptFG) scored nine points each, while Morgan State was 2-for-9 from the field and committed three turnovers during the Delaware State run.

Morgan State trailed 65-45 before chipping away at the DSU lead.

The Bears outscored the Hornets 29-14 during the next 10 minutes and pulled to within 78-74 on a lay-up by Stanley Davis with 1:56 remaining in the game.

A lay-up by Jonathan Walker gave DSU an 80-74 lead and the Hornets hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Delaware State shot 55.4% from the field in the contest (31-for-56), tying their second-best mark of the season. The Hornets also knocked down 8 of their 17 three-point shots in the game (47.1%).

DSU hit 16 of its 26 shots from the floor in the second half (61.5%).

The Hornets will next see action on Monday Mar. 5 in the MEAC Tournament at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va.

Dover, Del. (Mar. 1) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets defeated the Morgan State Lady Bears 60-56, at Memorial Hall, in the final game of the regular season. This is the first win for Interim Head Coach Kyle Adams, whom was given control of the team three games ago.



The Morgan State Bears led by eight points tied for their largest lead of the game, after a made jumper from Adre’onia Coleman extended their lead to 49-41 with 7:36 remaining in the fourth quarter.



DSU’s Arion Jackson hit back to back jumpers to cut the deficit to just four points, 49-45.



NaJai Pollard tacked on two free throws to cut the deficit to two at 49-47.



The Lady Bears’ Braennan Farrar scored a layup to increase Morgan State’s lead back to four.



Ryan Jones split a pair of free throws and then on the next possession NaJai Pollard finished inside with a layup to cut the deficit down to just one at 51-50.



Keke Barber capped off the 12-2 run with a three pointer, giving Delaware State a 53-51 advantage with 2:23 left in the game.



Morgan State’s Braennan Farrar scored on a layup to tie the game at 53 with 1:59 left.



DSU’s Arion Jackson converted on another jumper to retake the lead 55-53 with 1:44 remaining.



With just 36 seconds left in the game Farrar found Jihayah Chavis open at the top of the key for three, giving Morgan State a 56-55 lead.



On the following possession NaJai Pollard’s midrange shot was too strong off the rim, Ryan Jones tracked down the missed shot for the Lady Hornets and was fouled on her jumper.



Jones converted on both free throw attempts, and DSU regained a 57-56 lead with 15 seconds left.



The next possession Arion Jackson deflected a pass away from Morgan State into the hands of Ryan Jones. She would get fouled and make the first free throw.



However, Jones missed the second free throw attempt, NaJai Pollard got a hand on the rebound before having it wrestled away by multiple Lady Bears.

Players on both teams ran for the loose ball, but after all the chaos Lanayjha Ashe came away with rebound and was fouled with three seconds left.

Ashe put the game away at the free throw line.



DSU led at halftime 33-26, however after scoring just four points in the third quarter they trailed 43-37 heading into the fourth quarter.



Delaware State made 23-of-56 field goal attempts (41.1%) and 2-of-9 on three-point field goals (22.2%).



Lady Hornet NaJai Pollard led all players with 23 points and nine rebounds.



Arion Jackson also scored 10 points in her first game back from injury.



Morgan State shot 20-of-53 from the field (37.7%) and 5-of-14 from beyond-the-arc (35.7%).



Braennan Farrar led the Lady Bears with 19 points and three steals.



Up next for the Lady Hornets is the MEAC Tournament, which starts on Monday March 5th in Norfolk, Va.

THE GAME
Delaware State (4-27; 2-14 MEAC) hopes to erase memories of a disappointing regular season with a surprising MEAC Tournament run. The 13th-seeded Hornets begin 2018 tournament play against No. 4 seed North Carolina A&T. After dropping its first 12 MEAC games this season, DSU won two of the last four, including an 87-80 victory over Morgan State in the regular season finale on Mar. 1, its first win in three games under interim head coach Keith Johnson. Simon Okolue scored a career-high 24 points, while Artem Tavakalyan added 22 in the Morgan State contest. Okolue, who missed both 2017-18 regular season games against North Carolina A&T, leads the Hornets in scoring at 11.2 points per game and in rebounding at 7.1 per contest. He’s also No. 2 in the MEAC with a .599 shooting percentage this season. Tavakalyan is second on the Hornets in scoring (11.0 ppg) and rebounding (5.3 pg), and leads all MEAC players with a .421 three-point shooting mark.

North Carolina A&T (18-;13; 11-5 MEAC) ended the regular season with a 70-59 loss to arch-rival North Carolina Central on Mar. 1. Femi Olujobi, a 2017-18 All-MEAC Second Team selection, is tops on the team and eighth in the league in scoring at 16.4 points per game. He’s also fourth in the MEAC in rebounding at 7.8 per game. North Carolina A&T head coach Jay Joyner was selected as the 2017-18 Coach-of-the-Year



HORNETS vs. AGGIES SERIES HISTORY (NCA&T leads 58-35, including 5-2 in MEAC TOURNAMENT)
The Hornets are Aggies are meeting for the third time this season. North Carolina A&T took the regular season series, winning 76-66 at Delaware State on Jan. 8 and completing the sweep with a 54-51 victory on Feb. 5 in Greensboro, N.C. In the first regular season meeting, Artem Tavakalyan scored a game-and-career-high 23 points (8-11 FGs; 5-6 3pt. FG) to lead the Hornets. Delaware State led 30-28 at the half and had three shots at the potential game-winning basket in the final seconds in the second regular season match-up. DSU’s Joe Lewis recorded his second career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the second regular season contest against the Aggies. Delaware State’s leading scorer Simon Okolue missed both 2017-18 DSU/NCA&T regular season games due to injury (knee). The Hornets and Aggies are meeting in the MEAC Tournament for the first time since 2013, an 84-78 victory for NCA&T in Norfolk, Va.

Delaware State was eliminated in the first round of the MEAC Tournament by the Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks, 77-60 Tuesday afternoon at the Scope Arena.



The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 12-7 run, started by a three-pointer from Ryan Jones on the game’s opening possession, and capped off by seven straight points from NaJai Pollard.



DSU’s lead extended to 10 points after a layup from Genell Addison gave them a 19-9 advantage with 2:19 remaining. The Hawks hit back to back three-pointers, but DSU still lead 19-15 heading into the second quarter.



Delaware State held on to their lead throughout the second quarter, both teams struggled on offense shooting 33% from the field.



DSU headed into halftime up 33-27.



Maryland Eastern Shore opened the second half on a 12-2 run, and took their first lead of the game, 38-35 with 7:18 left in the third quarter. The Hawks made six three-pointers in the period and led 53-48 going into the fourth quarter.



Delaware State was outscored 24-12 in the final quarter, Maryland Eastern Shore led by as many as 19 points with 4:08 remaining.



Delaware State made 24-of-71 (33.8%) field goal attempts, including 6-of-23 (26.1%) on three-pointers.



NaJai Pollard led the Hornets with 22 points and 10 rebounds.



DSU’s Arion Jackson had a game high 12 rebounds.



Maryland Eastern Shore shot 26-of-66 (39.4%) from the field and 11-of-29 (37.9%) from beyond-the-arc.



Alexus Hicks led four Hawks in double figures with 18 points.
