I'm a proud Delaware State alum, let me just get that out of the way.

That being said, I think it's time the school explored moving down to Division II. We're never going to be able to compete with UD and the game this year proved that because this was a beatable squad. That window's closed now and I don't see them winning a MEAC game this season. IMO, the budget demands of running a Division 1 (LOW D1 at that) program have ruined the competitiveness we once had.

What do you guys think? Should DSU move down?

As long as they are scheduling FSU and WVU they gona keep cashing checks and taking L's.......

DSU should close shop. Its a drain on the tax payers and produces nothing

Pretty irresponsible sentiment to make about historically black institution and says a lot about soccer07 and bucsnot for agreeing with a bs statement, kinda surprised you went there RR

Really, have you ever met Dr. David Carter? Plus many more like him, who have gotten their degree from DSU. It is not a drain, it is a beacon, it is a bastion of hope for Delaware. The football program is not the issue, the academic stature is. While it has been a bit tough of late, I can assure you that this institution is in well deserving of State funding. Much more so, than the 13th grade we call Del Tech.

Having worked there over the past twenty years, this statement is misinformed at best. Have you been to campus lately? Do you know about the research and activities happening there? Get a clue before spouting off nonsense. Or better yet, stick to football, which is a topic you know something about.

@Ikeyfbst2, Dr Carter is a great guy, I'm proud to call him a friend, he's is definitely a role model to a lot of young student athletes

He coached both my sons, and I am honored to count him as a friend. They don't come any better, Even though he left Milford to go and lead the evil-doers at Lake :)

Lol sorry I don't know anything about DSU other than being a UD fan and making fun of a rival. Black or white had nothing to do with it.

Never thought that for a second RR, just wanted to make sure you knew how important the school is.

Conversation is important I recently have had great conversation with my Dad its a shame we couldn't communicate like we do know back then but its all good now

You probably think Cheney University should stay open too.
Tool

I think they either need to commit to football or drop it. DSU is expoliting those young men for money plan and simple no aurgument otherwise. Their using those games to support the atlethic program with no regard to player safety or even being competive.

Last year when DSU was embrassed at Missouri how can a coach or administion allow this? These are the comments after the game per ESPN.

Missouri sets scoring rec
ord, throttles Delaware St. 79-0

Missouri sets scoring record in win over Delaware St. yes
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Missouri shattered its school scoring record Saturday, dismantling Delaware State 79-0.

The previous record of 69 points has occurred three times, most recently on Sept. 17, 2011, when the Tigers shut out Western Illinois. The game was shortened to 10-minute quarters in the second half.

"I think we cleared the roster today and played everybody that is not a redshirt candidate at this time, so I was excited for those guys.

The Tigers (2-2, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) led 58-0 at halftime, resulting in a shortened second half.

According to NCAA rule, games may be shortened by time if both coaches are in agreement.

"It's just smart," Delaware State coach Kenny Carter said of shortening the game. "You don't want to create opportunities that are going to really put a damper or influence what happens the rest of the season for both teams."

It is the second time in two weeks a FBS game has been shortened due to lack of competitiveness. Clemson defeated South Carolina State 59-0 last Saturday with 12-minute quarters in the second half.

So why in the world go an schedule the #3 ranked team in the county? What if a player is serious injuried, is the school or coaches looking out for them long term with all the CTE info coming out of course not the are pading there own pockets. No respect for DSU football just black exploitation!

I had the good fortune to get some Education credits at DelState a quarter of a century ago. I am thrilled that Dr. Tony Allen is a leader there now.

I think they are OK in the division they are in but they have to stop using the FB program for the big check.

Wow some interesting stuff being brought to light. My comments were just in jest but that somehow brought out some feelings. Interesting

You can't hope to be good by firing a coach every three years. I saw some very positive things from DSU last Thursday night and I wonder if the coach will be around come next season?

Same here, eagle control. Cheyney was the first HBCU (Lincoln folks will disagree lol) and those universities still serve a purpose despite the closed-minded view of some folks.

Our Football Family has a 2007 DSU/MEAC Conf ring. I like DSU and (best kept secret) UMES history and location, all should a least take a visit. Maybe, D2 would not be a bad thing, if you get the chance check out UMES Football history, I think there was a time when they had more active NFL players than any other college.

Also, that ring is real nice and let me know if you have ever seen or sport one.

They certainly do!!! Football is cool, but as RR put it first, it's education. Funny that Delaware State lost a game to Delaware, and... they are accusing Delaware State for cashing checks by playing games they can't win , yet low and behold the Blue Hens have Virginia Tech this weekend?

Yea but I bet that Virgina Tech wouldn't have to play their water boy's to keep it competive or in the Missouri vs DSU case entertain ending the game early but allowed DSU to save face by shortening the game.

If UMES revived football at a D2 level considering the areas they could draw from, they'd be REALLY good in a short amount of time, I have no doubt about that. Same for DSU and the old DSC/Maryland State rivalry would be reborn with new names and faces of course.

One thing I'll say about this thread that was meant to discuss things from a football standpoint is how some folks throw stones and hide their hands and pretend they didn't mean it that way, which would be hilarious if it weren't pathetic.

From a football standpoint DSU is in real shambles. I can't remember when they actually won a game and even though the score against UD wasn't bad they were pretty much dominated.

Scheduling both WVU and FSU in the same season is ridiculous. It's obvious they need that money for athletics but at what cost? They will get embarrassed in both of those games. What about the safety of those kids on the team? I can see playing one of those schools but 2 in the same year is insane.

If they could become an Independent FCS school or drop down to DII that would help but I'm not sure how that all works. Also changing coaches every 1 or 2 years doesn't help. I know Collick is getting old but does he have anything to do with the program anymore? John Taylor? Maybe bring in a well known person from the alumni to help with the program.

I know Rod Milstead is very interested!

Their whole Athletic Department is in shambles Like always let's follow the money trail . . . .

2016 MEAC Athletic Department revenues and expenses
1. Delaware State $14,102,202 $14,740,360
2. Norfolk State $12,305,317 $12,305,317
3. North Carolina A&T $12,303,837
4. Florida A&M $12,016,501 $12,502,474
5. North Carolina Central $11,554,364 $11,809,820
6. Morgan State $10,453,448 $12,056,072
7. South Carolina State $8,449,844 $8,438,685
8. Maryland-Eastern Shore $5,822,678 $5,822,678
9. Savannah State $5,024,258 $6,848,277
10. Coppin State $3,423,614 $4,307,113 *
* Coppin State and MES don't offer NCAA Football ** Howard is a private institution so they was not listed in USA Today

2016 MEAC Football Final Standings

1. North Carolina Central 8-0
2. North Carolina A&T 7-1
3. Hampton 5-3
4. South Carolina State 5-3
5. Bethune-Cookman 4-4
6. Florida A&M 4-4
7. Norfolk State 3-5
8. Savannah State 3-5
9. Morgan State 3-5
10. Howard 2-6 **
11. Delaware State 0-8

So where's the money going, their basketball team usually finishes in the middle of the pack in the MEAC, there facilities are terrible, so football is a money generator no more or less. How can they sell recruits to come here and make us some money and hopefully, if you stay healthy, you'll have a DSU degree.

I am a follower of eagle control. This ties 2 of his comments together.

That is what teams were locks last week and FCS teams grabbing a payday by marching off like lambs to slaughter.

How about those Howard University Bisons! 45 point underdogs going into UNLV and winning. It is considered to be the greatest upset based on point spread in CF history. All of that and they get $600,000 check to boot. That's all cash as their expenses were picked up in the deal.

There is that story that Howard was such a dog that there were no bets booked in Vegas. Based on my memory I think that a Nevada sports book cannot take bets on instate amateur sporting events or amateur sporting events involving Nevada teams.

Howard's QB is Cam Newton's little bros. He ran for 190 and passed for 140.

This is nice for a DelState and the MEAC.

Hey, eagle, did you ever bet that kind of spread? Is there hope for the Hens? Coach Rocco took Richmond into ACC stadiums and won!

Bring in Drass. He's an offensive innovator....

I couldn't type that without laughing.

But seriously.

UMES is tied with Florida State for the most alumni appearing in a single Super Bowl game. In the 1968 game (Super Bowl III) between the New York Jets and the Baltimore Colts, UMES was represented by four alumni: Earl Christy (1961–1964), Johnny Sample (1954–1957), Emerson Boozer (1962–1965), and Charlie Stukes (1963–1967).

Art Shell - University of Maryland Eastern Shore

Shell was considered the dominant offensive lineman of his era after the Oakland Raiders selected him with a third-round draft pick out of University of Maryland Eastern Shore in the 1968 NFL Draft. Shell was a dominant force for the Raiders in the 1970s, and he helped contain Hall of Famer Jim Marshall in Oakland's victory in Super Bowl XI. Shell was given football's highest honor when he was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989.

Also, lets not forget...
The 'Big' Man | University of Maryland Eastern Shore

Bring back the old DS/Maryland State rivalry...at D2.

I am guessing the Equestrian Team, there appears to be a lot of Saddlebags for Ol' Whinney.
Equestrian - Delaware State Hornets

Charlie....good stuff. Clarence Clemons was a UMES guy. In my mind's ear I hear him on the sax....Rosalito...Born to Run. It is haunting.

Art Shell was also first African American NFL head coach.....Raiders.

Johnny Sample played in 2 of greatest NFL Championship Games of all time. For Colts ...beating Giants in OT in 1958 and for Jets beating Cots in Super Bowl 3 in Jan 1969.

I met Johnny Sample at college basketball game like 20 years ago. (Temple vs La Salle)

My sense is that some foks don't understand that they come across as automatically putting down HBCU's.
...and the struggle continues......

I would love to know how many full scholies that DSU has to work with. I'm betting its no where near the NCAA max of 63. A Division II program wearing Division I clothing IMO.
