KEY GAMES TO SEE:
Smyrna vs. Sussex Tech
After their 3rd 0-2 start since their last title, Smyrna has regained its momentum defeating last years State champions, and the runner-up in back to back weeks. A win this week against Sussex Tech would give the Eagles the a head start in capturing the conference title. Unfortunately, after a terrible ending in last weeks game to Salesianum, QB Aiden Sanchez was taken off in a stretcher and his availability for this weeks game is up in the air. Sophomore QB Richardson has stepped in for Sanchez quite a bit in their first 4 games so its nothing new to him, but having to start against a Tech team looking to build off its own momentum could be tricky. Smyrnas defense has been lights out this season against 3 top 5 teams, and I don’t expect them to slow down.
HS PICK: Smyrna 28 Sussex Tech 7
Salesianum vs. Episcopal
Dot tell Salesianums players this game could be a trap game. Episcopal has shown before they can compete with the Big S, and with Hodgson and Middletown still on the roster in back to back weeks (8,9), a loss this week could be dangerous for Sallies playoff aspirations. Every coach would tell you they would want to control their own destiny come playoffs, so heres to hoping the Sals don’t slip up. They were good enough to overcome Appo with their size advantage and quickness to jump out to a lead that Appos offense couldn’t recover from, however Smyrnas defense proved to be more stifling. Andrew Watkins seems to be the missing ingredient as the offense has lacked a spark, the big play ability that he possesses. The Churchmen (Episcopal, that is) is on a 3-0 season, outscoring its opponents 76-26 and had an extra week off to prepare for a Salesianum offense that seems to run left, run right, Play action and so on. The question to this game is if Watkins plays, or does Dinardo roll the dice and let him to continue to rest for their playoff push against the Silver Eagles, and Cavaliers, two games where they will need that big play potential. Despite all things going against the Sals, I think Dinardo has a few tricks up his sleeve still that he has yet to roll out.
HS PICK: Salesianum 34 Episcopal 27
William Penn vs. St. Georges
Playoffs? Were gonna talk about playoffs? St. Georges enters this matchup with a cruching defeat by the hands of Division 2 Caravel who seems to be getting better each and every week, and to Hodgson, who seems to be the lone runner on the track to a Division 1 title. Penn, however, hasn’t lost since their week one game against Salesianum and a healthy Andrew Watkins. Once again, Playoffs?, yes, playoffs. This game is crucial both teams if they wish to enter the tournament as a 5th or 6th seed, given how both of them still has either Middletown, Hodgson, and or Salesianum remaining, all of whom will be favored high in their respected match ups with these two. As St. Georges has gotten spotty at times, the Colonials have come alive, surrendering no more than a lone touchdown since their first and only loss. The Hawks however hasn’t had trouble finding the endzone, just an issue with stopping the opposition from finding it. The unstoppable force will meet the immovable object and for this week at least, the immovable object wins.
