After a two win season last year, the Lady Wildcats are 12-10 overall and 8-9 in the conference and will more than likely make the CACC tourney. Coach Bill Cleary and his staff have done a magnificant job having to play most of the season with seven or less players per game due to injuries. Saturday the Lady Wildcats defeated #4 NJIT 78-69 using a balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures. This is a talented team and fun to watch.

NEWARK, Del. - - In the final regular season contest at the WU Athletics complex of the 2013 volleyball season, Wilmington University swept its way past Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Goldey-Beacom on Senior night in front of fans dressed for Halloween.

Set scores for the match were 25-15, 25-13, and 25-12.

It was the final regular season match in front of the home crowd for three four-year letterwinners in the Wildcat (20-9, 15-2 CACC) program. Seniors Brittany Biddle, Annie Scarfo, and Katie Shorter paced the Wildcats to the 14th straight victory over their cross-town rival Lightning (5-20, 0-16 CACC).

Shorter and Biddle were at the front of the attack with seven and high kills, respectively, while Scarfo led the back line with 11 digs on the night. Shorter also accounted for three solo blocks and six block assists at the net while Biddle added a pair of block assists as well. In all, the Wildcat defense held the Lightning defense to a negative .093 on the night.

The first set was decided on the strength of a 13-1 run with the serve of Shelby Henderson and Scarfo. They turned an 11-9 deficit into a 22-12 advantage, with the ability to cruise to the first set win. Taylor Rapuano served the Wildcats out, collecting back-to-back service aces to win 25-15 in the first.

An 11-2 run midway through the second set was the turning point in the second frame, as the Wildcats were able to increase a 6-5 lead to a 17-7 lead in a matter of moments. A block by Biddle and Hannah Karas gave the Wildcats set point before Kaitlin DiGiacinto put the Wildcats ahead 2-0 with a kill, 25-13.

Scarfo came out on fire to start the third set, serving the Wildcats to a 10-0 lead after a kill by Shorter gave the Wildcats the ball. Scarfo had two aces during the run. Another 4-0 run gave the Wildcats a 15-3 lead following kills by Alex Siolos, Biddle and DiGiacinto, and a block by Biddle and DiGiacinto. Now leading 19-12, a double block by Shorter and Siolos kick started a 6-0 run to end the set, with another Rapuano ace ending the game, and the match, 25-12.

Rapuano finished with four service aces while Scarfo collected three on the night. DiGiacinto added a ace as well, giving the Wildcats eight on the night.

The win was the fourth in a row by the Wildcats, keeping them in front of the South Division in the CACC. Wilmington has two contests remaining in its regular season, both against North Division foes. The Wildcats travel to Concordia on Saturday for a match at 1 p.m.

4-0 Shutout over Georgian Court in Nick Papanicolas' 100th Career Victory

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - The regular season came to an end for the Wilmington University men's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon as the Wildcats clinched the fourth seed and a home game in the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Quarterfinals with a 4-0 road win over Georgian Court.

Wednesday's victory was the 11th of the season for the Wildcats (11-5-1, 7-4-1 CACC) but also marked the 100th men's soccer program victory since joining the NCAA ranks for the 2004 season. Head coach Nick Papanicolas has been at the helm of the Wildcats for all 10 seasons also collecting his 100th career head coaching victory on Wednesday.

"Today's win is dedicated to all the past and present players and coaches that have helped this program grow to where it is today," Papanicolas said after the match. The men's soccer program is now 100-71-22 all-time, good enough for a .575 overall win percentage.

In a must win game in order to host the first round of the upcoming CACC Tournament, the Wildcats came out and scored twice in the first half, before adding a pair of insurance goals in the second half against a shorthanded Lions' (5-11-1, 2-8-1 CACC) squad.

Senior Tommy Quaranta got the scoring started for the Wildcats by slamming home a rebound off the foot of Vitor Lima at the 23:56 mark of the first half. The goal is a bit of a weight off Quaranta's shoulder, as he was held scoreless in the Wildcats' previous seven matches.

Following Quaranta's goal, the cards started flowing out of the referee's pocket.

Four yellow cards were given in the final 20 minutes of the first half, three to Georgian Court and one to Wilmington.

That didn't slow the Wildcats down however, as Elton Joe scored his team leading 12th goal of the season with 1:15 left on the clock before the halftime break, padding the Wildcats' lead to 2-0. Todd Woll played a ball over the top from the back field, and Joe did the rest once he was behind the defense.

Four more cards came out in the early going of the second half with the final foul and subsequent card resulting in the Wildcats' third goal. Lima took the free kick and buried hit third goal of the season at the 71:34 mark of the second half, pushing the Wilmington lead to 3-0.

Things got interesting following Lima's goal, however. A pair of Lions each received yellow cards while another player and the Georgian Court head coach each received a red card and were escorted of the field. Less than a minute later, two more Lions received a red card, leaving only seven field players plus the goalkeeper to finish the rest of the contest.

Sophomore Aaron Brown capped the Wilmington scoring in the 89th minute, tallying his first career goal by knocking in the rebound off the initial shot by Femi Akintunde.

Senior Chad Jenkins earned his first start in goal of the season for the Wildcats, picking up his first shutout while making one save in the 90 minutes. The Lions' Rylan Gentil recorded 14 stops in the loss.

With the win, the Wildcats clinched the No. 4 spot in the CACC Tournament starting on Monday, November 4. The top four teams host a quarterfinal match with the Wildcats squaring off against No. 5 Concordia at the WU Athletics Complex. The Wildcats defeated the Clippers, 3-2, in their regular season meeting earlier this year, coming back from a 2-0 deficit in the second half.

Monday's quarterfinal is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.

After the Griffins took a brief 14-13 lead, the Wildcats gained the lead for good with a 4-0 run, mainly with the aide of the Griffin attack error. After trading points until holding a 20-18 lead, Scarfo again went on the serving spree, helping the Wildcats score five straight points to end the set, and the match, 25-18.

There is only one more chance to catch the Wildcats in action at the WU Athletics Complex in the regular season, as they will host cross-town rivals Goldey-Beacom on Thursday for Senior Night. The team will honor its three seniors prior to the match starting at 7 p.m.

Thursday will also offer fans to participate throughout the night, as the team will host a Spooktacular Costume Party along with a serving contest in between sets. The first 50 fans through the door wearing a Halloween costume will receive a prize, while all fans in attendance in a costume will be entered to win a Visa Gift Card.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - In totally dominating fashion, the Wilmington University men's cross country team can call itself back-to-back Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Champions, sweeping its way to the title while the women's team placed fifth overall on Sunday on Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park.

It is thought to be the first time a team swept all Top-5 positions on the result sheet in CACC history, and officially is dating back to the 2001 season. For the sweep, the Wildcats picked up a perfect 15 points.

Junior Richie Mitten became the second Wildcat to earn medalist honors at the CACC Championship since Wilmington joined the NCAA ranks for the 2004 season. Mitten beat the field of 75 runners with a time of 26:43, pacing the pack of seven Wildcats in the Top-15. For the result of today's meet, Mitten has been named the 2013 CACC Men's Runner of the Year.

Mitten is the first Wildcat to win the CACC Championship since Bill Steele won the event as a sophomore in 2010. Kyle Barnum also earned medalist honors for the Wildcats in 2002, when Wilmington was still known as Wilmington College and competed in the NAIA.

Sophomore Jesus Amezquita trailed Mitten by four seconds to cross the line at 26:47 for second place overall. Amezquita and Mitten fought head to head for the final mile of the race on who would take home the Runner of the Year honor.

Junior Tyler Muse was third for the Wildcats, crossing the line at 27:18 followed by graduate student Mike O'Brian six seconds later at 27:24.

Freshman Ken Fontal rounded out the sweep and the scoring for the Wildcats with a fifth place finish, crossing the line at 27:27. For his effort and the first freshman to finish the race, Fontal was named the CACC Men's Rookie of the Year.

It is the second year in a row a Wildcat was named the Men's Rookie of the Year, as Amezquita earned the award last season after an eighth place finish at the 2012 Championships. It is also the second year in a row that head coach Keith Jones was named CACC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year, voted on by the conference's Sports Information Directors.

Junior Matt Mossman also narrowly missed the scoring for the Wildcats, coming in 14th overall with a time of 28:28.

The CACC recognizes the Top-15 finishers as its All-CACC Team, meaning all seven Wilmington participants were honored as All-CACC.

The women were up next following the men's race on Sunday and senior Jeanette Halliburton paced the Wildcats to a fifth place finish with 150 points. The Wildcats also placed fifth in last year championship as well.

Halliburton, battling injuries all season long, came out and placed 10th overall with a time of 20:48. The Top-15 women were also named All-CACC in a presentation following the event, as Halliburton was named All-CACC for the second season in a row. The Wildcats (5-9-1 overall) tied the match in the 55th minute but the home Golden Lions (10-3-1 overall) rallied to score goals in the 69th and 77th goals to avoid the upset. Dowling was ranked seventh in the first NCAA Regional Rankings released earlier this week.

Victoria Vasapolli put a cross into the box, finding the head of Sowers who beat Golden Lion goalkeeper Melissa Guglielmo to the top left corner for her first collegiate goal.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - A direct kick that deflected off the Wilmington women's soccer defensive wall found its way into the back of the net in the first overtime, giving Georgian Court the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest, 1-0, on Investors Savings Bank Field.

Wilmington (0-3, 0-1 CACC), which previously defeated the Lions (1-0, 0-0 CACC) in four straight meetings dating back 2010, had its best offensive showing of the early going in 2013, posting three first half shots and totaling five on the afternoon.

In a game that was delayed an hour and ten minutes for a lightning storm, neither team could end the game in regulation. Wilmington goalkeeper Julia Brown recorded four saves, including one in overtime to keep the Wildcats in the contest, but it was the Lions' Casey O'Conner who kept the Wildcats off the board while making three saves in the game.

Georgian Court put the pressure on the Wildcats early in the overtime period, making Brown record a save in the 95th minute to keep the game alive. But it was after a foul when the Lions found an answer. Taylor Reinecke took the direct kick which deflected off the Wilmington wall, producing her first goal of the season in Georgian Court's 2013 opener.

The Wildcats earned three corners in the game, two in the first half, but were out-cornered by the Lions, 7-3, for the contest.

The teams traded points for the rest of the set, as Allison Briley finished off the Devils (12-13, 7-7 CACC) with her third kill of the game, 26-16.

The Devils came out hot in the second set, charging to a 9-4 lead in the early going. SUBJECT: Wilmington Volleyball Needs All Five Sets to Dispose of CACC Rival Georgian Court, 3-2

DATE: September 17, 2013
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - A highly competitive rivalry is brewing on the court between the Wilmington University volleyball team and Georgian Court, as the two needed to go the distance for the second straight match spanning two seasons, with the Wildcats coming out on top, 3-2, on Tuesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 25-19, 12-25, 25-22, 21-25, and 15-11.

Last year, the two teams met in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinals here at the WU Athletics Complex and for the second year in a row, the Wildcats (4-5, 2-0 CACC) came out on top in five sets. Georgian Court (1-5, 1-1 CACC) battled back to tie the match after going down 1-0, and 2-1, but four straight points to break a 6-6 tie in the fifth set was too much for the Lions.

The fifth and deciding set was back and forth in the early going, with the Lions grabbing a 4-2 lead before the Wildcats fought back with two straight points to knot the game at 4-4. After a ball handling error gave the Lions a brief 5-4 lead, Brittany Biddle tied the set with a kill before Kaitlin DiGiacinto gave the home tea a 6-5 lead with a team. Georgian Court was forced to call a timeout.

Following the timeout, the Lions tied the match with a kill at 6-6, but a service error gave the point and the serve back to the Wildcats. A block by Katie Shorter and Allison Briley, a Georgian Court attack error and a Shelby Henderson service ace boosted the Wildcats to a 10-6 lead in the deciding set.

Georgian Court was able to close the gap to two at 13-11 by scoring four out of five points, forcing Wilmington into a timeout. But after the break, DiGiacinto gave the Wildcats set and match point at 14-11, and a Georgian Court attack error ended the match in favor of the home team.

The win gave Wilmington its seventh straight victory over the Lions, starting with a 3-2 victory early in 2011. Georgian Court continues to lead the all-time series, 12-10, however.

A trio of Wildcats paced the offense with double digit kills as DiGiacinto led the team with 13. Briley added 11 kills while Shorter chipped in with 10. DiGiacinto and Briley finished with a double-double, collected 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

Sophomore Alex Siolos also added a double-double as she dished out 21 assists and helped the defense with 10 digs. Fellow setter Kasey Couch also passed out 21 helped, as she added 12 digs to collect the double-double as well. Shelby Henderson led the entire back row with 10 digs for the Wildcats.

At the net, Siolos helped a defense to a team total 10 blocks, denying five block assists while adding one solo block. Shorter denied one attack by herself while adding four block assists. Biddle chipped in with nine kills and three block assists on the night.

After hitting .417 to grab the lead in the first set, the Wildcats' offense sputtered as they hit negative.029 in the second, .179 in the third and .000 in the fourth set. The team rebounded excellently in the fifth and deciding set, collecting six kills on 12 attempts with only one error for a .417 hitting percentage. For the match, the Wildcats hit .155.

Tonight was the first of six consecutive home matches for the Wildcats, as they return to the court at the WU Athletics Complex on Wednesday night. They will host Shepherd in a nonconference tilt starting at 6 p.m.

NEWARK, Del. - - The Philadelphia University women's basketball team led wire-to-wire to take a 94-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup over Wilmington University on Wednesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

With the win, the Rams' (8-3, 6-0 CACC) head coach Tom Shirley earned his 500th coaching victory at Philadelphia University. He is now in his 25th season at the helm of the Rams, his 33rd overall. He has a career total of 649 victories.

Wednesday night saw the Rams take a double digit lead in the first four minutes and continue to cruise for the rest of the contest. A majority of the game was played at the foul line, and the Rams took advantage. Overall, the Rams made 29 free throws while the Wildcats (4-9, 1-5 CACC) only went to the line 21 times.

The Wildcats were led by sophomore Tenicia Spence as she again poured in 20 points in a game. It is the ninth time this season the guard has scored at least 20 points, twice scoring more than 30. Spence shot 7-of-17 from the floor and hit 6-of-7 from the foul line for Wilmington. Tiaja Harrold was the only other Wildcat to score in double digits, finishing with 13 points on 6-of-17 from the floor and hitting the only three-pointer of the game for the Wildcats. Both double-digit performances came off the bench for Wilmington.

The Rams had six players in double figures, led by Mary Newell's 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Najah Jacobs added 14, Monica Shacker 13, Bria Young 11, and Megan Finn and Tori Arnao each added 10 points for the Rams. Arnao added a double-double with a game high 13 rebounds.

The Rams jumped out to a 13-2 lead with 16:05 to play in the first half and continued to extend the lead for the rest of the stanza. The visitors held as large as a 26 point advantage before going into the halftime break leading 52-30.

The Wildcats were able to force 19 Philadelphia turnovers in the contest, turning them into 25 points on the other end. They led 25-18 in points off turnovers, 12-7 on second chance points while grabbing 17 offensive rebounds as a team, and 44-33 in points off the bench.

The Wildcats remain in CACC action for the rest of the 2013-14 season and travel the short distance to their in-state rival, Goldey-Beacom, for their next matchup. The crosstown rivalry game is set for Saturday with the opening tip slated for 1 p.m.

SUBJECT: Philadelphia Holds Off Wilmington Men's Basketball, 90-85, in CACC Shootout

NEWARK, Del. - - At last check, the size of the rims at the WU Athletics Complex are regulation size, but the Wilmington University and Philadelphia University men's basketball teams could have proved otherwise on Wednesday night by putting on a shooting show in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.

Philadelphia came out on top, 90-85, shooting 53.3 percent from the floor, holding off a second half run by Wilmington who shot 52.2 percent from the floor for the game.

The Rams (11-4, 5-1 CACC) rarely missed in the first half, going 20-of-30 from the floor, but more impressively shooting 9-of-13 from beyond the three-point arc, some of which were three feet behind the line.

In a tail of two halves, the Wildcats (6-9, 2-4 CACC) shot 20-of-33 from the floor in the second half, but the 13 points halftime deficit was too much to overcome, despite a strong run down the stretch to get as close as few as four points.

The only subpar performances by the teams tonight came from the foul line, as the Rams hit 15-of-20 as compared to the Wildcats 8-of-15 form the charity stripe.

Leading the percentage race for the Wildcats was Valentino Thompson who went 11-of-14 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point arc, and adding 2-of-3 from the foul line for 26 points. He also finished tied for the team high with six rebounds. Herb Dennis finished with a game high 27 points, shooting 11-for-20 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc. Shaq Monroe-Gaskins was the final Wildcat in double digits, scoring 11 off the bench.

The hot shooting early on gave the Rams a double digit lead with 12:23 to play in the first half. The Wildcats could only slim the margin to as few as six for the remainder of the first stanza, as the Rams always seemed to respond to a Wildcats' mini-run with a three-pointer at the other end. A turnover and a dunk by the Rams' Peter Alexis in the final seconds capped the half for the visitors, giving them a 51-38 lead at the break.

Philadelphia went up by as many as 16 points in the second half, prior to the Wildcats making their run. They cut the deficit to 10 with 3:04 to play on Ta'Vaune Griffin's second put-back slam of the game, sparking the late game comeback. Dennis hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc with 1:21 to play to bring the score to 84-77 before another three-pointer by Thompson on the left wing cut the deficit to 85-81 with 44 seconds to play.

But that would be as close as the Wildcats would get as the Rams hit 6-of-8 from the foul line in the final minute of play.

The Rams finished with four players in double figures, led by Derek Johnson's 26. Johnson hit 5-of-8 from three-point territory, followed by Nick Schlitzer's 4-of-7. Schlitzer finished with 24 points while Peter Alexis added 21 points and a game high eight rebounds. Andre Gibbs finished with 13 points.

The Wildcats remain in CACC play for the rest of the 2013-14 campaign, playing again on Saturday. The team stays close as it heads to in-state rival Goldey-Beacom for another CACC doubleheader. The men follow the women's game with an anticipated start time of 3 p.m.
