NEWARK, Del. - - Coming off one its most successful seasons, the Wilmington University baseball team has been ranked in a pair of national preseason polls, reaching as high as eighth in the College Baseball Lineup poll and 26th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll.

The 2013 Wildcats went 43-13 overall, winning their third straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship and reached the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament Championship game for the first time in program history. The team was one win away from reaching its first Division II World Series.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is regarded as the "official" poll, posted by NCAA.com, where the Wildcats sit in 26th after finishing in a tie for 29th at the end of last season. The Wildcats gathered 561 points, one from cracking the Top 25 and tying Coker to start the season.

The College Baseball Lineup poll listed Wilmington eighth overall, siting the depth of the pitching staff that returns for 2014 and the power atop the lineup as reasons for being voted so high.

The Wildcats are set to play Southern New Hampshire, Millersville, and Shippensburg in 2014, all teams that were mentions in both the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the College Baseball Lineup polls. Wilmington in the lone team representing the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in either poll.

The 2014 season begins Friday, February 21 against Mercyhurt in a play weekend in Petersburg, Va. The Wildcats will also play Mansfield and the College of Saint Rose over the opening weekend.

SUBJECT: First Year Head Coach Mike Shehorn Announces 2014 Wilmington University Softball Schedule

DATE: January 8, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - - With the 2014 season approaching, first year head coach Mike Shehorn unveiled the upcoming Wilmington University softball schedule on Wednesday, with some notable changes taking place while looking at the slate.

The most noticeable change to the schedule is the length at which the Wildcats will be participating in games at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. Unlike years past, Shehorn has scheduled six play days during the teams annual trip to Florida as opposed to the two-week time-period in previous seasons.

"We wanted to play more games closer to home this year," Shehorn, who took over the program in August, said. "Having games closer to home means we get to play more regional teams this year, which can only help us."

Four of those regional games are even before the Wildcats take off for Florida, as they are going to welcome Pace and Bloomsburg to Asbury Field in New Castle to kick off the season. The 2014 season debut will be a doubleheader against Pace on March 2, before Bloomsburg comes to town for a doubleheader on March 4.

The Wildcats then head to Florida where they will play 12 games in six days, returning home on March 14. The National Training Complex in Clermont, Fla. has not released the 2014 slate of games when Shehorn released his schedule.

Upon arrival back in Delaware, the Wildcats open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference at home as well, facing Felician in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 16.

"This year we are also going to have a pair of overnight trips in the season," continued Shehorn. "The first might be one of the tougher weekends for the season, as we head to Bridgeport for a Friday afternoon doubleheader and then turn around and head to Dominican on Saturday."

The other overnight trip will occur when the Wildcats to North Carolina to battle Chowan on April 1. The final nonconference opponent the Wildcats will face comes in the final doubleheader of the regular season, when they head to Dowling on April 28.

Inside the CACC, Wilmington will welcome Holy Family, Post, Concordia, University of the Sciences, and Bloomfield to Asbury field for conference doubleheaders throughout the season. The Wildcats will head to Chestnut Hill, Dominican, Philadelphia, Goldey-Beacom, Nyack, Georgian Court, and Caldwell to round out the road campaign.

The CACC Tournament is once again hosted by Georgian Court and will start on Thursday, May 1. The top eight teams throughout the regular season head to the CACC Tournament, with the hopes of gaining the conference's automatic qualification into the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. The Wildcats were the No. 3 seed in last year's tournament.
