Blue Hens Drop Double Overtime Contest at Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. --The University of Delaware men’s soccer team dropped its first contest of the year Wednesday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Villanova in double overtime at Higgins Soccer Complex.

The ‘golden goal’, which was scored on a penalty kick, was awarded to Villanova (3-2) because Blue Hens (2-1-1) goalkeeper Todd Morton was called for a foul on Yusuf Cueceoglu’s late overtime run.

Cueceoglu leaked out following a Blue Hens corner eluding a pair of Blue Hen defenders in the process. The freshman made a dangerous run into the box, where he found himself alone with just the keeper to beat. Before Cueceoglu was able to attempt a shot, he was tripped up by Morton. The trip earned Morton a yellow card but more importantly gave the Wildcats a penalty kick.

On the penalty kick, Morton guessed correctly diving to his right-hand side, but the shot by Max Kroschwitz just snuck past the junior. The goal gave the Wildcats their seventh consecutive victory over Delaware.

Villanova tallied the first goal in the 15th minute off a corner, while FedePrieto tallied the lone Delaware goal in the 34th minute.

Morton ended up making six saves in the match, including a pair of highlight reel efforts on Villanova set pieces. Delaware was outshot in the match 21-13.

Head Coach Ian Hennessy:

"We've had some terrific games with Villanova over the years, and this was another one. Credit to Villanova for earning the win today. They are the best team we have played this year and played some lovely soccer today. The spirit in our group was terrific and I am gutted for them to have lost so close to the end, where we could have gotten the result we needed to remain unbeaten. We have a little break now to get some players back healthy and hopefully be at full strength for another Big East foe in Seton Hall."

HEN SCRATCHINGS:

• Delaware falls to 1-1 this season on the road, and to 0-1-1 in overtime.
• The Blue Hens are now 0-1 this season when allowing more than one goal and are 0-1 in one goal games.
• Prieto scored his first goal since Oct. 18, 2016, against Temple.
• Morton allowed two goals for the first time this year.

Blue Hens Drop CAA Opener to No. 22 UNCW, 1-0

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime decision to No. 22 UNCW Sunday afternoon at Grant Stadium. The game was decided on a penalty kick as the Blue Hens (3-2-1, 0-1 CAA), were whistled for a foul in the 18-yard box nine minutes into the first overtime period. On the PK, David Lozano drilled the ball into the left-hand side of the net just outside the reach of the diving Todd Morton, giving UNCW the 1-0 victory.

UNCW outshot Delaware 17-6, and Morton made three saves.

Head Coach Ian Hennessy:

“I thought UNCW were excellent today. People can see why they beat the number three team in the country (UNC) last week. Today they thoroughly deserved the win. For us, we continue to grow and pick up momentum. There are games to be had in the CAA, but they deserve all the credit today. Every game in the Colonial is a battle. Our goal is to get back into the playoffs, and every game is a game where you need to pick up points. So we look forward to bouncing back at Northeastern, knowing that we need to get a result up there to continue to be in the playoff hunt at the end of the season.

Free-Kick Goal Sends Delaware to First CAA Win

BROOKLINE, Mass. -- The University of Delaware men’s soccer team behind a free-kick goal from Halvard Ramstad defeated Northeastern University 1-0 Saturday afternoon from Parsons Field.

The Blue Hens (4-2-1, 1-1 CAA) outshot the Huskies (2-5-1, 1-1 CAA) 20-6, recording six shots on goal to Northeastern’s one. NU played the final 35-minutes of the match with just 10 players after Moustapha Samb was booked for his second yellow card of the match in the 56th minute.

UD scored the game-winner in the 56th minute when Ryan Mertz was ripped down just outside the 18-yard box by Samb. On the ensuing free-kick senior captain Thibault Philippe sent a perfect ball that found a leaping Ramstad, who headed the ball into the left-side of the net. The goal was the sophomore’s first of the season.

In between the pipes, Todd Morton earned his fourth victory of the season making just one save. Delaware returns to action Wednesday night when they host Drexel for a 7 p.m. kick.

Head Coach Ian Hennessy:

“The city of Boston is always a tough place to play, especially for CAA setting. I am thrilled for the lads that we earned not only the victory but also the shutout. We had some quality moments tonight and if we can improve our consistency I think we have the makings of another good team. Wednesday night we have a critical game at home against Drexel. Hopefully, we can count on our continued crowd support in a vital game against our Philadelphia based rival.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS:

Delaware improves to 3-1 this season on the road, and have now won three straight games against Northeastern.
The Hens are now 7-16-2 all-time against Northeastern.
Saturday’s victory is the first time Delaware has won a game when scoring just one goal. The Blue Hens were previously 0-1-1 when scoring one goal this season.
Morton won his 23rd career game Saturday. He needs just two more to match Borja Barbero’s all-time UD record.
The goalie earned his 14th career shutout, which is the second most all-time. He needs just six more to equal Dave Whitcraft’s record of 20.

Blue Hens Win Wild Affair Against Drexel, 3-2

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s soccer team earned Colonial Athletic Association victory number two Wednesday night, dropping rival Drexel University 3-2. The game was a wild affair from start-to-finish as Delaware (5-2-1, 2-1 CAA) enjoyed a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals just 62 seconds apart. After falling behind, Drexel (1-5-1, 0-1-1 CAA) came storming back to tie the match at two.

UD took the early two-goal lead on goals by Fede Prieto and Chad Poarch. Prieto, who latter tallied the assist on the game-winner, scored his team-leading third goal of the season. Delaware scored the game-winner on a free-kick from about 10-yards out in the 53rd minute. The ball, which was served in by Prieto found a streaking Halvard Ramstad who scored his second consecutive game-winning goal.

The Blue Hens registered 17 shots while Drexel attempted seven. Goalkeeper Todd Morton recorded 2 saves while Jacob Jordan made four saves for the Dragons.

Head Coach Ian Hennessy:

“I thought tonight was entertaining soccer, maybe too entertaining for a coach, but for the fans five goals and some exciting soccer. I was very pleased with the opening stanza of the game. I thought we did enough to score three or four goals with some really quality opportunities. In the second half full credit goes to the Drexel players and staff for tying up the game and making it interesting. Obviously, conference games are always difficult. In the end, the results went our way, and it was a critical three points. “

On the team bouncing back after losing the 2-0 lead:

“I think we’re very resilient, and the three goals and 17 shots are both indicators that things are happening well. Tonight we had enough firepower to overcome the pair of Drexel goals. Goals change games, and I thought their second goal put us ‘on the back foot’ a bit. That set-piece goal from Hal, his second in two games, changed the momentum again. In the end, we saw the game out without too much damage or defending from Todd.”

On the next match at William & Mary:

“Sunday is almost a must win for William & Mary after starting 0-2-1. I think they’re a very strong team, having beaten ACC teams. Every time we go down to them, it’s a battle. They have the quality to get back into the playoffs. Obviously, this is a critical game for them. I think 12-points will get us back into the playoffs, so for us, if we can get the three points it would be huge for us because we have some tired legs right now. There’s no question that we go into the game as underdogs.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS:

Delaware has now defeated Drexel in four consecutive matches.
The Blue Hens improve to 2-1-1 this season at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
UD scored three goals for the first time since October 22, 2016.
Delaware is now 7-3-1 in its last 11 home CAA matches.
Prieto’s three goals are the fourth most in the CAA.
Morton needs just one more win to tie Borja Barbero’s all-time UD wins mark (25).

Battle Scores First Career Goal, but Blue Hens Fall 3-1 to Penn

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s soccer team fell 3-1 to Penn Wednesday night at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium. The setback snapped a three-match unbeaten streak.

Penn (2-6-1) struck first Wednesday as Jerel Blades scored just six minutes into the match. Delaware continued to dominate the possession in the first half, but a late set-piece goal by Erumuse Momoh gave the Quakers a 2-0 lead in the waning seconds of the half.

Following the break, Delaware (5-3-2) made wholesale changes in order to try and find a spark as head coach Ian Hennessy replaced nine of the 11 field players.

The move paid early dividends, as freshman Mark Battle scored his first career goal just 2 minutes into the second half. The goal was assisted by fellow freshman Ryan Mertz and cut the Blue Hens deficit to just one goal. The Hens and Quakers continue to battle, but a 70th-minute penalty kick goal gave Penn an insurmountable two-goal advantage. The Blue Hens return to CAA play Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. when they head to Long Island to face rival Hofstra.

HC Ian Hennessy:

“I thought our replacement guys were terrific in the second half, giving us a nice spark. I think the starters were looking ahead to the conference game this weekend, as that’s the only real path for us into the NCAA Tournament. I’m not sure if we showed up with the right mentality. I think that you saw limited chances tonight. Full credit to Penn, they took advantage of the mistakes we made. I just think we just not ready to play. Hopefully Saturday we’re in the right mindset. I think we need to talk about it and make sure the mentality returns. I think of all the things tonight the mentality was missing, as we just didn’t show up today. This isn’t uncommon to have a performance like this in the middle of the season as we have some heavy legs but Penn was battling some of the same things that we were. So credit to them for coming into a tough place and getting a result. We just need to get our mindset, attitude and focus right for what will be a huge game for us.”

Hen Scratchings

Delaware falls to 0-2-2 against Penn all-time.
The Blue Hens fall to 2-2-1 at Grant Stadium this season.
Kexx Camarco made his Blue Hens debut.
Blai Palmi made his first appearance of the season.
Hens GK Todd Morton remains one win shy of tying the Delaware all-time victory mark.

Late James Madison Goal Pushes Blue Hens to Third Straight Loss

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association match to James Madison Wednesday night at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium. The Blue Hens had multiple chances early in the match to score multiple times but were able to muster just one goal Wednesday.

Sophomore Fede Prieto started the scoring for the Blue Hens (5-5-2, 2-3-1 CAA) in the 18th minute when he headed home a perfect free kick off the foot of Thibault Philippe. The goal was Prieto’s fourth goal of the season.

JMU (5-5-3, 2-1-2 in CAA) tied the game in the 40th minute when a cross by Yannick Franz ended up in the back of the net off a deflection by UD defender Arno Masson-Viale.

The Hens and Dukes continued to battle deep into the second half, but James Madison ultimately scored the winner in the 86th minute when Tom Judge sent a 50-yard pass that found a streaking Brennen Burton. Burton calmly received the pass and eluded a charging Todd Morton, firing a shot that barely slipped into the left side of the net.

The loss was Delaware’s third consecutive defeat and dropped the Blue Hens into sixth place in the CAA with just two conference matches remaining. The Blue Hens return to action Tuesday night at UMBC. Kickoff from Baltimore is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Head Coach Ian Hennessy:

“We changed things up tonight to give ourselves more opportunities to score goals. We scored tonight but I thought we had three or four golden opportunities to put this game to bed, and we didn’t. James Madison gained confidence, became more spirited from it and responded well. Credit to JMU. Then I thought we had control of the match toward the end until two bad decisions led to the winner. Overall, I’m disappointed for our guys. It was a critical game for us to win, and I think it was a game we should have and could have won. Now we have to go down to Charleston next weekend in a must-win situation if we want to qualify for the playoffs.”

On the teams six days between matches:

“With exams still going on, our guys need a rest. The legs are still heavy. It’s been a long season and we’ve been working very hard. The next week is about recovery and preparation for the most important game which is the Charleston game. It’s about giving ourselves the best opportunity to win down in Charleston next weekend.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS:

• Delaware falls to 2-3-2 at home this season, and to 1-2 in conference play.
• The Blue Hens started the night in third place in the CAA, but have fallen to sixth place based on Wednesday’s results.
• UD has lost three matches in a row for the first time since 2015 (Sept. 16-26).
• Delaware is winless in its last four matches dating back to Sept. 27.
• Prieto scored his 11th career goal tonight.

Blue Hens Battle UMBC to Spirited 1-1 Draw

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The University of Delaware men’s soccer team battled regional rival UMBC to a 1-1 draw Tuesday night at Retriever Soccer Park.

The Blue Hens (5-5-3) enjoyed a 1-0 lead deep into the second half thanks to a gorgeous 43rd-minute goal by Chad Poarch. On the goal, Poarch made a deadly cutback deep in the UMBC (7-3-4) box that allowed the sophomore to uncork a deadly shot into the back of the net.

Delaware held the slim 1-0 lead until the 64th-minute when David Harris scored his first goal of the season. The Blue Hens and Retrievers played two 10-minute overtime periods, but neither team was able to find the elusive go-ahead goal. Hens goalkeeper Todd Morton made a season-high seven saves.

UD returns to action this Saturday at College of Charleston. Kickoff from South Carolina is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Head Coach Ian Hennessy:

“Tonight’s game was richly entertaining and a great endorsement for how fun our game can be. We played with a level of quality at times, and continue to grow as a program this season. It would be nice if we can replicate tonight’s level for the remainder of our run to the CAA postseason. Making a deep run would be a nice reward for our players.”

Vassalo's Second Half Goal not Enough as Blue Hens Drop 2-1 CAA Heartbreaker to Elon

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer battled to the end Thursday night, but an 83rd-minute goal from Elon’s Grace Bennett proved to be the difference as Delaware fell 2-1 Thursday at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.

The Blue Hens (5-10-2, 2-7 CAA) overcame an early 1-0 deficit in the 62nd-minute when sophomore Jillian Vassallo buried a bouncing ball into the left-hand corner of the net. Elon (9-5-4, 2-3-3 CAA) originally took the early 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by Sydney Schilling.

The Hens and Phoenix continued to battle until Elon scored the game-winner when Reena Wichmann flicked a cross that found Bennett, who fired a header past Kailyn Rekos.

Elon outshot Delaware 8-3, with both Rekos and Hanna Macaulay of Elon recording two saves. The Blue Hens close out the 2017 season this Sunday against James Madison. Kickoff from Grant Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Blue Hens Honor Seniors, Drop 1-0 CAA Heartbreaker to Elon

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s soccer program dropped a 1-0 contest Saturday night to Elon University at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.

The Blue Hens (5-7-4, 2-4-2 CAA) had their chances, as Elon (7-4-6, 3-2-3 CAA) goalie Matthew Jegier made four saves in addition to two saves by the Phoenix defense.

In the 14th-minute freshman, Noa Benninga sent a dangerous corner kick toward the back post. The ball continued to travel towards the back of the net until it was cleared off the line by an Elon defender.

Delaware's best chance occurred deep into the second half when Fede Prieto rocketed a shot that a Phoenix defender just cleared off the goal-line before it reached the back of the net.

Elon eventually took the lead in the 75th-minute when Amir Berkane slipped a penalty kick past UD goalie Todd Morton. The PK was awarded after the Hens were whistled for a foul in the box.

For the game, Delaware outshot Elon 15-8 and attempted seven corner kicks to the Phoniex's one. Morton made a pair of saves for Delaware. Prior to Saturday’s season finale, the Blue Hens honored captains Carlos Perales and Thibault Philippe in a pregame ceremony. Delaware missed the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2012.

Head Coach Ian Hennessy:

“First, I want to thank and congratulate both Carlos and Thibault for four excellent seasons here at Delaware. Those guys were a part of some great memories here, going to three straight CAA championship games, and the NCAA Tournament a season ago. I’m disappointed for them but thankful and grateful for all that they have done for the University of Delaware and this program. In terms of the match, I’m disappointed. We knew it was going to be a tight game that would come down to one moment. I think our effort was strong until we entered the 18-yard box, where we just didn’t have the quality to finish on a couple of occasions. All the credit goes to Elon for coming in here and picking up the result they needed. They deserve credit for that.”

On the guys learning from this season:

“There’s a lot of different ways that you can learn from adversity, and I hope our guy's process this whole season and understand that every idea, every pass, every touch matters. At this level, in order to beat good teams like Elon and Duke, you cannot rely on anything but quality.”

Five Blue Hens Receive All-CAA Men's Soccer Honors

RICHMOND, Va. -- The University of Delaware placed five team members on the Colonial Athletic Association all-conference teams, the CAA announced Thursday.

Blue Hens junior captain John Schroeder was named to the All-CAA first Team while four other UD players earned third team recognition.

Schroeder (Houston, Texas/YSC Academy), a three-year starter for the Blue Hens, was named to the All-CAA second team and the CAA All-Tournament Team a season ago. The defender was also named to the All-CAA Rookie Team in 2015. This season,

Schroeder scored a goal and tallied three assists for the Hens in 16 games.

In addition to Schroeder, four other Blue Hens were named to the CAA third team, including graduate student Asgeir Eyporsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Verzlunarskōi Īslands), senior captain Thibault Philippe(Saint-Brieuc, France/Lycee Notre-dame Guingamp), junior Robert Gillin (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), and redshirt junior and goalkeeper Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson).

Morton (.96 GAA, five shutouts), Philippe (three goals, two assists), and Gillan all received All-CAA honors in 2016 when they led the Hens to the CAA Tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Led by Gillin, Morton, and Eyporsson, the Blue Hens allowed just 17 goals in 16 games this season, the fourth fewest in the CAA. Delaware’s .990 team GAA is currently the 57th best nationally.

Head Coach Ian Hennessy: “I am very pleased for our players that received recognition this Fall. The honors are well deserved, not only for the quality of their play but for the leadership and example they have set for our younger players. Their daily habits and dedication to pursuing a higher level of play will resonate within the squad over an important spring period for the group.”
