WILMINGTON, Del. - - Both the women’s and men’s cross country squads opened up the 2017 campaign in fine fashion, each winning their portion of the 17th Annual WUXC Invite on a soggy Saturday morning at Carousel Park.

The women started the season with the first gun of the morning, claiming 30 points to finish first among the five teams participating. Graduate student Rachel Jones lead the way with a second place showing. Her time of 21.03.39 was a personal record for the 5K distance. Junior Tara Langan was the second Wildcat to cross the line, running a time of 22:01.66 which was good for fifth place. Classmate Gabby Brown was right behind her in 6th place, finishing in 22:35.27.

The freshmen duo of Alexa Crowell and Julia Merritt were the next scorers for Wilmington, as they paced each other in their first collegiate event. Crowell crossed in a time of 22:49.55 which was good for eighth place, while Merritt placing ninth in a time of 22:56.23 to round out the scoring for the hosts. Credit to senior Nicole Brevoort who ran the entire race with one shoe, as she lost one of hers at the starting line. Even with one shoe, she ran an impressive 25:48.78 in tough conditions. Junior Tori Crawford wrapped up the Wildcats with a time of 28:48.56.

On the men’s side, junior Mark Corrigan dominated the race from start to finish, finishing the 8K distance in 28:22.07. His time was 46 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Junior classmates Miguel Suero and Johnathan Avila paced each other and finished in third and fourth place, respectively. Suero finished in a time of 29:17.81, while Avila was close behind, crossing in 29:22.03.

Freshman Jake Puharic, in his first collegiate event, gave the Wildcats 6 points with his sixth place finish. The newcomer crossed the line in 29:51.33, while graduate student Korey Jeffries rounded out the scorers for the home team. His 10th place finish in a time of 30:55.02 seconds, gave the Wildcats a convincing 17 point victory. Redshirt sophomore Jayven Davis closed out the Wildcats on the course, finishing 27th overall in a time of 39:17.40.

Wilmington continues their 2017 season next Saturday as they head to the famous Belmont Plateau for the Philly Metro Invite. The race is scheduled to begin at 12:15 PM.
 
SUBJECT: A Pair of Third Place Team Finishes Highlight Wilmington Cross Country Efforts at Philly Metro Championships

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - On a course the Wildcats are very familiar with, both the men’s and women’s cross country squads ran to third place finishes on Saturday afternoon at the Philly Metro Championships.

The women were first to tackle the historic Belmont Plateau course, home of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championships for the last few seasons. The 5K race featured some of the best teams the CACC has to offer, with perennial power Jefferson University besting the 10-team field. Division III Stockton University was second, just 11 points ahead of Wilmington. Fellow conference foes Bloomfield, University of the Sciences, Holy Family, and Caldwell finished consecutively behind the Cats.

Leading the way for the ladies was once again graduate student Rachel Jones, who clocked a time of 20:52.1 to place sixth. Junior Gabrielle Brown had a top 15-showing, placing 13th in a time of 21:41.2. Freshman Alexa Crowell was the next Wildcat to score for the Cats, finishing in a time of 22:09.7 which was good for 19th place. Classmate Julia Merritt finished 24th in a time of 22:44.0, while the final Wildcat to count in the points column was junior Tara Langan who placed 35th , with a time of 23:21.2.

Senior Nicole Brevoort (23:29.4; 37th place), sophomore Emily Kockott (23:54.0; 41st place), and junior Tori Crawford (29:20.8; 77thplace) rounded out the harriers for the women’s side.

In a highly contested men’s race, which saw the first three teams separated by 20 points, it was CACC foe Jefferson University who once again, came out on top. Stockton placed second, while the Cats’ 63 points placed them third, 19 points ahead of conference rival Bloomfield (82).

Mark Corrigan continued his torrid start to the season, as the junior placed third overall, finishing the 8K course in a time of 28:06.1. Close behind him was junior Miguel Suero, who ran a 28:33.6, finishing 7th overall. Also earning a top-15 finish was classmate Johnathan Avila, whose time of 29:12.6 was good for 11th place overall. Freshman Jacob Puharic was the fourth Wildcat scorer, as the first year runner ran an impressive 29:22.3 which placed him 16th. The final WilmU runner to score was Korey Jefferies, as the graduate student placed 28th overall in a time of 30:42.5.

Amani McMullen (39:31.4; 85th place) and Jayven Davis (39:45.5) rounded out the men’s side.

Wilmington remains close to home next Saturday as both squads travel across town to take part in the University of Delaware Invitational #1. The race will be held at White Clay Creek State Park, which will play host to the CACC Championships for the first time later this fall. The women’s race starts at 9:30 AM with the men’s run to follow.
 
SUBJECT: Keith Jones Named 2017 CACC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - For the fourth time in his career, Wilmington University cross country head coach Keith Jones has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year, as announced by CACC commissioner Dan Mara.

Voted on by the conference’s sports information directors, Jones has also earned the award on the men’s side in 2012, 2013, and 2015. He was also named the CACC Women’s Coach of the Year in 2009.

Winners of two straight CACC Championships, Jones has the men geared towards a third straight when they race this Sunday at White Clay State Park in Newark, Del. Jones has scheduled two events at White Clay during the 2017 regular season in preparation for this year’s CACC Championships.

Jones has led the men’s program to a pair of victories this fall, and has not finished worse than fourth place overall. The men’s team earned team titles at the 17th Annual WUXC Invite and the University of Delaware Invite #1. They came in second place at the UD Blue & Gold Invite, third at the Philly Metro, and fourth place at the Don Cathcart Invitational.

The men kickstart the CACC Championships on Sunday, with the first gun going off at 9:30 a.m.
 
SUBJECT: Wilmington Women’s Bowling Joins the East Coast Conference as an Associate Member

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. - - The East Coast Conference announced on Thursday afternoon that Chestnut Hill College and Wilmington University have been added as associate members in the sport of women's bowling, effective immediately.

Both Chestnut Hill, located in Philadelphia, Pa., and Wilmington, located in New Castle, Del., are in their second-ever year of competition after completing their inaugural seasons in 2016-17. The two schools will be immediately eligible for all ECC weekly and postseason awards and will compete in the 2018 ECC Women's Bowling Championship.

"We are very excited to welcome Chestnut Hill College and Wilmington University to the East Coast Conference as our newest Associate Members in the sport of Women's Bowling," said ECC Commissioner, Dr. Robert Dranoff. "These two institutions will be strong additions to our league, helping us to continue growing and offering opportunities for women to compete in Division II Bowling. We look forward to having them as part of our 2018 championships."

The addition of Chestnut Hill and Wilmington to the conference brings the total numbers of schools competing to 12, making the ECC the largest women's bowling conference in the NCAA. The Griffins and Wildcats also become the sixth and seventh associate members in the sport of women's bowling, joining Adelphi University, Felician University, Franklin Pierce University, Kutztown University, and Lincoln Memorial University.

The other five schools competing in ECC women's bowling are Daemen College, LIU Post, Molloy College, Roberts Wesleyan College, and St. Thomas Aquinas College, all of whom are full-time members of the ECC.
