NEWARK, Del. - - The District of Columbia scored a pair of goals less than three minutes apart in the second half to claim a 2-0 victory over the Wilmington University men’s soccer team to wrap up the Wildcat Invite on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (0-1-1) struggled to get in a rhythm offensively all afternoon, but used a flurry of shot late to narrow the margin, 10-9, for the game. The Firebirds (1-1) held an 8-2 advantage in shots throughout the first half, forcing Wildcat goalkeeper Vinny Tasca to come up with five saves to keep the game scoreless.

Following a pair of shots by the Wildcats early in the second half, the Firebirds countered and quickly covered the length of the field. Moving down the middle, Gabriel Velluto got the ball ahead to Gabriel Torres. Torres flicked in on over the top to Raphael Pacano who found himself alone with Tasca in the box. Pacano buried his first goal of the season 55:37 into the match.

Moments later, the Firebirds were on the attack again as Torres was buried deep in the left corner. He got a left footed cross off, finding a wide-open Kevin Ortez on the six-yard box for a one-time goal. The Firebirds led, 2-0, 58:10 into the match.

The Wildcats posted the last five shots of the contest following the Firebirds’ second goal, but they couldn’t solve Joao Brusamolin and find the back of the net. Five of the team’s nine shots were on frame.

The Firebird had the pressure on the Wildcats the entire first half, showcased by the 10-1 advantage on corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes. Tasca made five saves for the Wildcats while Brusamolin made five second half stops for the Firebirds for the shutout.

The Wildcats remain at home for their next contest, as they host West Chester on Wednesday at the WU Athletics Complex with a 4:00 p.m. opening whistle.

NEWARK, Del. - - In an evenly matched contest, neither team could find the back of the net as the Wilmington University men’s soccer team and West Chester played to a 0-0 tie at the WU Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

Both squads had seven shots at the end of regulation and each team finished with 10 shots at the end of 110 minutes of action. West Chester (1-1-1) put four of those shots on frame while the Wildcats (0-1-2) missed the net with all 10 chances.

The Golden Rams had the best opportunity during regulation, as Doug Goitia took a shot from the left side. Wilmington netminder Vinny Tasca was up to the task, however, sprawling to his right to get a hand on it and knock it out of bounds. The ensuing corner produced another chance for the visitors, but a header on the back post was blocked.

The Wildcats had the best chances in the opening overtime session, as Dimitrios Topouzlis’ long range shot was just over the crossbar in the 94th minute. Tom Garratt then found himself wide open from 12 yards out, but his right-footed bender snuck over the crossbar in the 100th minute as well.

West Chester put two shots on the board in the second overtime, but couldn’t find the back of the net, resulting in the double-overtime tie.

Wilmington’s Ben Jordan led the team with four shots while Garratt tallied two shots.

The Wildcats return to action on Sunday when they open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play at the WU Athletics Complex. The men are the nightcap to the CACC doubleheader with an approximate start time of 2:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: Lorne Bickley Breaks Record with Four Goals as Wilmington Men’s Soccer Tackles Felician, 10-1, in CACC Opener

DATE: September 10, 2017

NEWARK, Del. - - Sophomore Lorne Bickley set a new single game program record with four goals as the Wilmington University men’s soccer team opened Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Play with a 10-1 victory over Felician on Sunday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

There has been five hat tricks in the Wildcats’ (1-1-2, 1-0 CACC) NCAA era, but Bickley’s four goals sets the new mark. He scored three of his goals in the first half. The 10 goals are the third time in program history the team reached double figures, defeating the District of Columbia, 10-1, in 2008 and defeating Goldey-Beacom, 11-0, in 2011.

Bickley started the scoring in the 19th minute, putting away a low cross form the left side by Abdul Mansaray for his second goal of the season. Less than five minute later, Bickley was at it again, putting home a pass from Ben Jordan down the middle of the box, finding himself in alone on the keeper. He completed the first half hat trick in the 28th minute, getting a through ball down the middle from Manuel Ruiz Luque for a one-on-one with the keeper again.

The Golden Falcons (1-3, 0-1 CACC) made it interesting before the half, getting on the board in the 35th minute. Leading 3-1 at the break, the Wildcats also led 6-3 in shots in the first half.

Bickley continued the personal onslaught and set the single game record for the Wildcats with another goal in the 58th minute. He once again found himself in free on the keeper after Dimitrios Topouzlis slotted him a ball down the middle.

Then the floodgates opened.

Mansaray scored his first collegiate career goal in the 65th minute for a 5-1 lead before Tom Garratt put his name in the score sheet with his first collegiate career goal in the 70th minute. Daniel Loyo made it 7-1 in favor of the Wildcats in the 72nd minute, converting a corner kick opportunity with a header at the near post.

Nahshon Little came on and scored his first collegiate career goal by beating the keeper to a ball at the top of the box in the 79th minute. Joe Bell also scored his first collegiate career goal on the 84th minute, again getting behind the defense to be in alone on the keeper. Adrian Coverdale capped the scoring in the 86th minute, again scoring a career first goal with the assist from Joel Flores.

The Wildcats put up 20 shots in the second half to finish ahead of Felician, 26-9, in shots for the match.

Starting goalkeeper Vinny Tasca did not record a save in 62 minute before giving way to Conor Halsted for the final 32 minutes. In his first action of 2017, Halsted made three stops to close the door.

The Wildcats remain in CACC play with their next contest, as they head to Holy Family for their first road contest of the year on Wednesday afternoon. The first whistle is set for 4:00 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - Abdul Mansaray’s quick retaliation proved to be the difference for the Wilmington University men’s soccer team, as they pulled out a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference road victory at Holy Family on Wednesday afternoon.

The win stretches the Wildcats’ (2-1-2, 2-0 CACC) unbeaten streak to three straight while the Tigers fall to 1-3 overall, 0-2 in the CACC.

The Tigers knotted the score on a set piece 67:33 into the match, but it didn’t take long for the Wildcats to get back on top. Mansaray didn’t waste any time and once inside the penalty area, took a shot from the left side that found the back of the net for the 2-1 lead just 24 seconds later.

Goalkeeper Vinny Tasca saved the only shot he faced in the final 22 minutes to secure the victory.

The Wildcats got on the board first in the opening half, as sophomore Lorne Bickley tallied his sixth goal of the season in the 18th minute. Ben Jordan found Bickley in front with a cross from the right side to start the scoring.

The Wildcats outshot the Tigers, 16-5, for the match, but Tigers’ goalie Mark Pohl recorded seven saves to keep the home team in the contest. Tasca finished the match with three saves for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats remain on the road for their next contest, as they head to Bloomfield for another CACC bout on Saturday afternoon. They will follow the women in the CACC doubleheader with a 3:30 p.m. scheduled start time.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Wins Fourth Straight, 5-1 Over Chestnut Hill

Junior Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) and senior Fernando Sanchez (Madrid, Spain) each scored twice to help Goldey-Beacom notch its fourth straight win, a 5-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Chestnut Hill at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

Down 1-0 in the fourth minute, the Lightning got the equalizer eight minutes later. Aghrim took a great long pass from senior Alvaro Martinez (Zaragoza, Spain) and put a low shot home to level the match.

Sophomore Levi Maruca (Downingtown, PA) scored his first of the season, a great 10-yard shot after dribbling in, in the 32nd minute for a 2-1 Lightning cushion. Aghrim then made it 3-1 in the 35th minute, heading home a perfect long pass from sophomore Nicolas Jaramillo (Cali, Colombia).

It was Aghrim’s fourth goal of the season, his 10th career and third career brace.

Sanchez then took his turn in the spotlight, scoring in the 42nd and 60th minutes for his second career brace with Aghrim adding an assist. Now with 15 career goals, Sanchez rockets into a tie for seventh place in school history with David Nimroozi (2002-03, 2008-09).

Aghrim’s career-best five points now gives him 32 career, one outside the school’s career top 10 list.

Aghrim had five shots, Sanchez recorded four and junior Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) needed just one save for the Lightning (4-1, 2-0 CACC).

Vini Brito and Jason Burns had two shots apiece and Frank Maniscalco played great in net, totaling seven saves for the Griffins (2-3, 1-1).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday plays at Felician in an 8:00 pm match, following the women’s 5:30 pm contest.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Men’s Soccer Uses Two Second Half Goals to Sink the Lightning

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men’s soccer team used two second half goals to secure the crosstown Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup, 2-0, over Goldey-Beacom at the WU Athletics Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Goldey-Beacom (4-3, 2-2 CACC) put two shots on goal in the first half, but could not find the back of the net against the Cats goal tender Vinny Tasca who made two saves. The Wildcats (3-2-2, 3-1 CACC) did not take a shot on goal in first half, and the half would end just the way it started in a 0-0 tie.

The Lightning had two chances to get on the board in the first half, first on a header by junior midfielder Chahin Aghrim in the sixth minute, but Wildcat goaltender Vinny Tasca made a diving save. Their second chance came in the 38thminute on a header by senior forward Lorenza Gama but was once again turned away by Tasca.

In the second half, the Wildcats got the scoring started by using a set piece that ended the scoring drought in the 47th minute. Ben Jordan scored his second goal of the season off a header from Fredrik Bentdal, his first assist of the year, to take the early lead 1-0 in the second half. Bentdal sent a corner kick to the back post, finding Jordan wide open.

Bentdal didn’t stop there, as in the 56th minute he ripped a free kick shot forcing the Lightning goalkeeper to leave his feet to make the save. Lorne Bickley was there to clean up the rebound as he heel kicked it in for his seventh goal of the season, which put the Cats up for good.

The Lightning would put three shots on goal in the second half, but they would fail to figure out Wilmington goalkeeper Vinny Tasca. Tasca saved all five of the Lightning’s shots on goal to seal the victory for the Cats. It is Tasca’s second shutout of the season.

The Wilmington University men’s soccer team will now take to the road for their next three games. They will first travel to Nyack College for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game on Saturday September 23rd, first kick is slated for 3:00 p.m.

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University men’s soccer team outshot the United Soccer Coaches Division II Nationally Ranked No. 7 LIU Pioneers, but the home team found the back of the net late to seal a 1-0 decision at Pioneer Soccer Park on Tuesday afternoon.

The Wildcats (4-3-2 overall) were up to the task against the nation’s seventh ranked team (ranked second in the USC East Region Poll), but it was a goal in the 76th minute that stole a decision away from the Wildcats.

The visitors outshot the Pioneers (6-0-1), 14-9, including a 6-5 advantage on shots on goal, but it was Johann Kristjansson’s strike 75:45 into the match that proved to be the difference. He took a feed at the top of the box, beat his defender and drew Wilmington’s Vinny Tasca away from the goal line before finding the back of the net.

The Wildcats had an early opportunity, but Daniel Loyo’s chance off a Ben Jordan corner was saved by the Pioneer netminder in the seventh minute.

The second half saw the Wildcats put more pressure on the Pioneers, but to no avail. Romario Squire put a shot on frame in the 56th minute, but Oliver Hessner Hansen was there for the stop. Lorne Bickley had a chance off a free kick in the 63rd minute, but his header was once again stopped by Hessner Hansen. Fredrik Bentdal and Manuel Ruiz Luque also put shots on goal late in the second half, but could not beat Hessner Hansen. Bentdal’s last-ditch effort in the 87th minute was stopped as well. Ruiz Luque got a shot off in the final 47 seconds, but his chance sailed high over the frame.

Tasca made four saves in goal for the Wildcats while Hessner Hansen stopped six shots for the shutout victory.

The Wildcats’ nonconference tour continues on Thursday as they head to the always tough NYIT Bears on Thursday afternoon. The game in Old Westbury, N.Y. is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. first whistle.

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - - Daniel Loyo scored with 2:55 left in regulation to force overtime as the Wilmington University men’s soccer team worked a 3-3 tie at NYIT in nonconference action on Thursday afternoon at President’s Stadium.

The Wildcats (4-3-3 overall) scored the first two goals of the contest, but the Bears (3-5-1) came roaring back with two goals of their own in the first half. NYIT took the lead with a goal in the 72nd minute before Loyo scored his second of the season to force overtime.

Abdul Mansaray put the Wildcats on the board in the 11th minute, scoring his fifth of the season to give the visitors a 1-0 lead 10:49 into the contest. He took a feed from Manuel Ruiz Luque and beat the Bears goalkeeper to the left.

The Wildcats capitalized on their next opportunity as well, as Lorne Bickley scored his team leading eighth goal of the season in the 18th minute. Dimitrios Topouzlis fed Bickley a ball and the forward flicked a shot over the Bears’ goalie for the early 2-0 lead.

The Bears didn’t lie down, however, as they got on the board in the 30th minute. A misplay in the backfield allowed the Bears to counter as the first half seconds wound down, getting another one behind starting goalkeeper Conor Halsted just before the buzzer sounded to tie the game, 2-2, at the half.

NYIT made it three unanswered goals in the 72nd minute, coming all the way back to take a 3-2 lead with just over 18 minutes to play.

Loyo had a chance off a corner just a minute later, but his header sailed high. The defender wouldn’t miss with his next chance.

Loyo tallied his second goal of the season after taking the ball away from the defender, placing a shot in the left upper-90 with 2:55 to play in regulation. Neither the Wildcats nor the Bears got a shot off before the end of regulation.

The Wildcats had the first opportunity in the overtime session as well, as they came out of the gates with high pressure. The Wildcats worked a corner in the 93rd minute, but Loyo’s header was just high, landing onto of the goal cage.

The Bears had the final two shots of both overtime periods, but neither found its way through to Wilmington goalkeeper Vinny Tasca.

Tasca made three saves after entering in at halftime while the Bears’ goalkeeper Jonathan Rico made six stops for the home team. The Bears narrowly outshot the Wildcats, 13-11, for the match.

The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action and to the WU Athletics Complex with their next game, as they host Caldwell on Saturday afternoon. The men will follow the women’s game with an approximate start time of 2:30 p.m.

NEWARK, Del. - - A second half comeback fell just short as the Wilmington University men’s soccer team fell, 2-1, to Caldwell in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (4-4-3, 4-2 CACC) found themselves down 2-0 at the break, but came out and out shot the Cougars (5-5-1, 3-3 CACC), 14-3, in the second half. Unfortunately, they were only able to find the back of the net once, despite the continued pressure.

The Cougars played well in the first half, keeping the Wildcats on their heels throughout the first half. The Cougars would eventually get on the board in the 21st minute, suing a goal from Joaquin Escudero. He received a cross from the right side and one-timed it off the right post and in for the 1-0 lead.

The visitors struck again quickly, taking a 2-0 lead in the 24th minute. The Wilmington defense stepped up to draw the Cougars offsides, but a deflection by the defense allowed the Cougars to get in behind the backline and onsides. Tom Yorston slotted one past Wilmington goalkeeper Vinny Tasca for the 2-0 lead just 23:05 into the match.

Lorne Bickley found himself in front early in the second half, looking to cut the deficit in half. But his shot went directly to the Caldwell keeper to keep it at 2-0. A trio of Wildcats had chances in the 60th minute, as Bickley’s initial shot was saved on the right post. Ben Jordan jumped on the rebound but his shot was blocked, as was Callum McHale’s rebound opportunity. Dimitrios Topouzlis’ header off the ensuing corner was blocked off the post as well.

McHale would eventually cut the deficit in half in the 75th minute, being on the doorstep as Manuel Ruiz Luque’s initial shot was saved. McHale knocked in the rebound for his first goal as a Wildcat at the 74:26 mark.

But that would be all the Wildcats would get in the game, as Bickley’s last chance header off a free kick in the 89th minute hit the crossbar and stayed out.

The Wildcats outshot the Cougars, 18-9, for the match, and earned more corners, 17-8, including a 11-2 advantage in the second half alone.

Tasca recorded four saves in the loss while Caldwell keeper Nils Svere made six stops for the win.

The Wildcats take to the road for a midweek contest at Georgian Court on Tuesday afternoon. The game against the reigning CACC Tournament Champions, and the team that knocked the Wildcats out of the CACC Tournament last year, will be gin at 3:30 p.m.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - The Wilmington University men’s soccer team lost a heartbreaker in the first overtime as the host Georgian Court Lions found the back of the net in the 94th minute for the 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory on Tuesday afternoon.

The Wildcats (4-5-3, 4-3 CACC) outshot the Lion’s (7-3-2, 4-2-1 CACC) 7-4 in the first half but could not figure out the goalkeeper. The Lions’ attempted four shots in the first half with nothing to show for it either.

In the second half, the Lions doubled up the Cats’ shots by attempting 10 to the Wildcats’ four, with neither team being able to touch the back of the net. The Wildcats’ Lorne Bickley led the team in shots with three and two of them landing on goal. Manuel Ruiz Luque and Daniel Loyo each took two shots as well. Goalkeeper Vinny Tasca made five save on six shots on goal. The Wildcats were able to beat the Lions’ netminder one time, but a defender was able to clear the ball off the line in time on a Bickley attempt.

But just three minutes and 40 seconds into the first overtime, the Lions’ Dan Chochlinski found himself alone on a breakaway down the right side and beat Tasca to secure the overtime win for the Lions.

The Lions’ Nicholas Moran led the way with four shots with two of them on goal. Anturo Sanchez took three shots with one of them landing on goal while Luis Silva took two shots, landing one on goal. The Cats only attempted three shots on Lion’s goalkeeper Jamie Hickey in 93:40 of action.

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men’s soccer team won a Central Athletic Collegiate Conference contest over Dominican behind the foot of Abdul Mansaray, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex to wrap up the 2017 WilmU Homecoming Weekend.

Mansaray gave the Wildcats (5-5-3, 3-2-2 CACC) a 1-0 lead with a goal in the first half before breaking a 1-1 tie with a second half goal to shut the door on Dominican (2-10, 2-6 CACC).

Mansaray scored the first goal of the game in the sixth minute, getting on the end of a long ball that started from Elliot Johnson. The ball was challenged by the Charger goalie and Dimitious Topouzlis at the top of the 18 and popped loose for Mansaray to find the back of the net. The Cats outshot the Chargers, 16-9, for the game, including 6-2 in the first half. Wilmington also led the game in corner kicks at a total of 13-3.

Dominican would not go down without a fight, because in the 56th minute Wilmington would commit a foul just shy of the 18, resulting in a dangerous free kick. Charger leading scorer Sergio Monton stepped to the ball and bent a right footed shot around the wall and into the upper 90 at the near post in the 58th minute to tie the game at 1-1.

After the goal by Monton, the Wildcats put five shots on goal in the next nine minutes. The team finally found a result being after a give and go with Dominic Folarin and Mansaray. Mansaray’s initial shot was denied but he received a rebound opportunity and put it away for what would prove to be the game winner in the 71st minute.

Wilmington goalkeeper Vinny Tasca saved three shots in the match, two of them coming after Mansaray’s second goal to preserve the win.

The Wildcats’ next contest will be on the road as they travel to Chestnut Hill College on Wednesday. First kick in Philadelphia is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - A pair of second half goals allowed the Wilmington University men’s soccer team to a 3-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Chestnut Hill on Wednesday afternoon played at the CHC Campus Field.

The Wildcats (6-5-3, 6-3 CACC) only allowed eight shots on goalkeeper Vinny Tasca; five in the first half and three in the second. Tasca made four saves on the four shots on Wednesday. Through today’s games, Tasca now ranks second in the CACC in save percentage (.800), while he is also fourth in goals against with 14 and an 1.01 goals against average.

Wilmington got on the board in the 22nd minute off the foot of Lorne Bickley, taking a shot from 40 yards out after a throw in from Sam Jester. With that goal, Bickley leads the team and is now tied for second in the CACC with nine marks on the year.

The first half ended with Wilmington putting 11 shots on goal after Bickley’s goal. The second half started just like the first half ended with Wilmington putting a flurry of shots on Chestnut Hill’s goalkeeper.

Play would be halted in the 69th minute with a Griffins’ red card. The Wildcats wasted no time in taking advantage of the Griffins’ misfortune. Twenty-eight seconds after play resumed, Fredrik Bentdal found himself on the end of some great touches between Jake Meyer and Bickley to finish a one-timed touch goal for his first of the season.

Not to be out done by his teammates, Abdul Mansaray got in on the scoring in the 86th minute. Mansaray found himself on the receiving end of a lead pass from Bickley, which left him one on one with the goalie for his eighth of the season.

The Wildcats outshot the Griffins, 28-8, in the match, including a 12-3 advantage in the second half alone. The Wildcats also earned more corners, 13-0, than the Griffins in the contest.

Wilmington’s next game will be Saturday as they host Post on Senior Day. First kick is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.

NEWARK, Del. - - A pair of second half goals secured a 3-0 shutout victory for the Wilmington University men’s soccer team over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Post on Saturday for Senior Day at the WU Athletics Complex.

The blanking was the second straight and third overall shutout for the Wildcats (7-5-3, 7-3 CACC). The win kept the Wildcats in third place in the CACC Standings while Post (5-7, 4-5 CACC) slipped to seventh overall.

Post had early chances in the first half, forcing Wilmington goalkeeper Vinny Tasca to make two saves, with the third shot just narrowly sailing over the crossbar in the 34th minute.

But it was the Wildcats that struck first, as redshirt freshman Jake Meyer got the scoring started in the 35th minute. Tom Garratt found him on the far post off a corner kick for a one time goal; Meyer’s first goal as a Wildcat. The Wildcats outshot the Eagles, 5-3, in the first half, and earned more corners, 3-0.

Out of the halftime break, Lorne Bickley would get in on the action in the 57th minute. Fredrik Bentdal sent a left footed cross from the left side to the near post and Bickley was there to redirect it out of the air. With that goal, Bickley leads the team with 10 and is in second place in the CACC. He is also third in the CACC in total points with 22 and fourth in shots with 44.

Senior Dominic Folarin would cap off the scoring for the Wildcats in the 82nd minute. Callum McHale sent a long cross all the way to other side of penalty box where Folarin would deposit it into the back of the net with a one-time rocket for his first of the season. Wilmington outshot Post by a margin of 10-7 and also led the game in corner kicks, 7-3.

Tasca saved the only three shots on goal that Post was able to get off. With today’s shutout, Tasca is now tied for the lead in the CACC in goals against with allowing 14 and leads the CACC in goals against average at 0.94.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - - The Wilmington University men’s soccer team scored the first two goals of a 2-1 victory nonconference victory at Bridgeport on Tuesday, giving head coach Nick Papanicolas his 150th career victory.

In their final nonconference game of the regular season, the Wildcats (8-5-3 overall) put up 18 shots against the Purple Knights’ (3-9-1) six. The Wildcats were four minutes away from their third consecutive shutout, however Bridgeport’s Femi Coker had other ideas as he found the back of the net from a cross off the foot of teammate Jaylan White that he deposited into the goal.

Tom Garratt got the visitors on the board in the 30th minute with his second goal of the season. Garratt finished off an initial shot from Daniel MacDonald-Taylor that clanked off the post and he was there to deposit it into the back of the net. The lone goal would be how the first half would end as neither team would put another shot up in final 10 minutes.

As the second half got underway, a Purple Knight red card in the 50th minute would give the Wildcats a man advantage for the remainder of the match. The visitors would take full advantage of that situation as they put four shots on goal in six minutes. MacDonald-Taylor would eventually tally his first goal of the year as he chipped a ball just out of reach of the Knights’ goalkeeper in the 63rd minute.

The Knights finally got on the board in the 86th minute, but the Wildcats were able to keep the ball at the other end of the field for the rest of the match to secure the victory.

Senior goalkeeper Connor Halstad made his second start on the year. He made three saves in the game, upping his season total to six in picking up his first win as a Wildcat.

The win was Papanicolas’ 150th of his 14 year tenure at the helm of the Wildcats. He has been the only head coach of the Wildcats’ NCAA era, making tonight the program’s 150th win as well. Papanicolas is now 150-97-27 all-time, making for a .597 win percentage.

The Wildcats will be back on the road for their final away game of the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Concordia. First kick scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University men’s soccer team won a Central Athletic Collegiate Conference contest at Concordia College, 1-0, on a lone goal off the foot of Abdul Mansaray on Saturday afternoon.

Mansaray gave the Wildcats (9-5-3, 8-3-0) the lead over the Clippers (4-9-1, 2-8-1 CACC) in the 15th minute, after Sam Jester made a pass into the box and Mansaray took a shot which deflected off a defender and found the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season. With the goal today, Mansaray is now tied for third in the CACC in goals scored.

The Clippers took six total shots on the day and five of them on goal. The Wildcats’ Vinny Tasca countered those five shots on goal with five saves for the shutout. With the five saves today, Tasca now leads the CACC in save percentage at .821, goals against with 14, and a goals against average of 0.88.

The Wildcats win streak started on Saturday, October 7 against Dominican where they won 2-1. They then won on the road on October 11 at Chestnut, 3-0, at home on October 14 against Post, 3-0, away at Tuesday 17 at Bridgeport, 2-1, and today at Concordia, 1-0.

The Wildcats will wrap up their regular season on Wednesday, October 25 as they take on CACC rival Jefferson University. The Rams lead the CACC at 10-0-1 with the Wildcat sitting in third place after Saturday. First kick is scheduled for 3:30 at the WU Athletics Complex.

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men’s soccer team used a first half goal and a second half penalty kick to take the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference matchup, 2-0, over visiting Jefferson at the WU Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

Jefferson (13-4-1, 10-1-1 CACC) could not put a shot on the Wildcats’ Vinny Tasca, who is the CACC’s leading goalkeeper, in the first half of play. Wilmington (10-5-3, 9-3 CACC) did not allow Jefferson to put a shot on goal until the 88th minute of play.

The Wildcats scored in the 34th minute, as Manuel Ruiz Luque would find Abdul Mansaray down the left side of the box. That’s all Mansaray would need as he crossed back to his right and found the far post for his 10th goal of the year.

The Wildcats would have three more opportunities in the first half as Jake Meyer went high over the goal in the 36th minute before Sam Jester took a header wide right in the 37th minute. Dominic Folarin would take the final shot of the half in the 42nd minute, hitting the outside netting on a half volley.

The second half would see much of the same from the Wildcats as they continued to play good defense and continue to pressure on the Rams’ keeper Ben Sauer. Mansaray would try Sauer right away in the 48th minute but only to be denied by a diving Sauer. Lorne Bickley had a good opportunity while finding himself in on goal after a back heal from Mansaray, but Sauer came off his line to make the sliding save one again. Sauer would finish the day with four saves on six shots on goal.

Mansaray wrecked havoc again in the 60th minute, getting behind the defense and into the box on the right side. Jefferson dragged down Mansaray in the box, presenting the Wildcats with a penalty kick. Fredrik Bentdal deposited a left footed kick to the back of the net for his second of the season and the 2-0 lead.

The Rams’ best opportunity would come on a Wildcats’ handball in the box in the 88th minute that would bring Jefferson’s Seiji Rose to the spot, Tasca would make his only save of the game diving to his right to push the low kick attempt away and take the wind right out of the sail of the Rams.

That is all the Wildcats would need as Tasca would make one save on one shot on goal to bring his CACC leading save percentage up to .823. Tasca now hasn’t allowed a goal in 392:58 minutes, dating back to October 7. The Wildcats out shot the Rams, 13-3, including 6-0 in the first half.

The Wildcats will now await a game to be played on Friday between Bloomfield and Caldwell to determine their seeding in the upcoming CACC Tournament. A Bloomfield win pushes the Wildcats to the fourth seed.

The Wildcats guaranteed themselves a home game and will be hosting a first round game to be played on Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.

SUBJECT: Five Wildcats Named to 2017 Men’s Soccer CACC All-Conference Teams

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - In leading the Wilmington University men’s soccer team to a third place finish in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular season standings, five student-athletes have been named All-CACC as the conference office announced the season accolades on Monday morning.

Sophomore point man Lorne Bickley was named First Team All-CACC while junior Abdul Mansaray, sophomore Dimitrios Topouzlis, sophomore Elliot Johnson, and junior Vinny Tasca were named Second Team All-CACC in a vote of the league’s 13 head coaches.

The Wildcats finished the regular season 10-5-3 overall, going 9-3 in the CACC in earning the No. 3 seed for the CACC Tournament starting Monday afternoon. The Wildcats host sixth seeded Post University at the WU Athletics Complex with a 2:00 p.m. opening kick in the First Round.

Bickley (St. Helier, Jersey) is a repeat award winner, being named the CACC Rookie of the Year and First Team All-CACC as a freshman as well. He finished in a tie for third in the CACC with 10 goals, adding two assists for 22 points. Two of his 10 goals were game-winners, coming against Felician and Chestnut Hill. His four-goal performance against Felician set a new single game program record for the Wildcats, scoring a hat trick in the first 28 minutes.

Mansaray (London, England), Bickley’s counterpart atop the formation, finished the season strong, ending with 10 goals and three assists for 23 points. He led the CACC with five game-winning goals, all coming against CACC opponents. He netted the winner against Holy Family, Nyack, Dominican, Concordia, and Jefferson. He scored at Nyack and against Dominican for a season high. He also had one goal and two assists for four points against Felician.

Topouzlis (Thessaloniki, Greece) was a mainstay in the midfield for the Wildcats before an injury sidelined him for the final three games. One of the most consistent players for the Wildcats all season long, Topouzlis dished out assists against Millersville, Felician, NYIT, and Dominican, while routinely playing against team’s best offensive players.

Another stout defender, Johnson (Essex, England) also missed substantial time due to an injury. But since returning for the final six games of the year, he has anchored a defense that has only allowed two goals during that stretch. Four of his nine games played have resulted in a shutout. He also added an assist from the back line against Dominican.

Tasca (Audubon, Pa.) has been the ultimate anchor of the Wildcats’ defense this year. He has possibly the most consistent player for the Wildcats, resulting in leading the CACC in three out of the four major goalkeeper categories. He leads the CACC with a .823 save percentage, 14 goals against, and a 0.83 goals against average. He has six shutouts on the year, five of which came against CACC opponents. Tasca ended the regular season not allowing a goal in 392:58 consecutive minutes, dating back to the 58th minute against Dominican on October 7, posting four straight shutouts.

Jefferson’s Seiji Rose was voted as the CACC Player of the Year while Bloomfield’s Regsan Watkins picked up the CACC Rookie of the Year award. Jefferson’s Pedro Neto was named the CACC Defensive Player of the Year while Goldey-Beacom’s Suail Bismilla was voted as the CACC Goalkeeper of the Year.

The conference’s sports information directors voted Jefferson’s skipper Ptah Myers as the CACC Coach of the Year while Nyack College was award the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award.

SUBJECT: Sixth Seeded Post Upsets Third Seeded Wilmington Men’s Soccer, 1-0, in CACC Tournament Quarterfinals

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men’s soccer team couldn’t overcome an early deficit in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Quarterfinal as sixth seeded Post took down the third seeded Wildcats, 1-0, on Monday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The loss ends the season for the Wildcats (10-6-3) while the Eagles (8-8) move on to play second seeded Goldey-Beacom in the CACC Tournament Semifinals on Friday on the campus of Georgian Court University.

A misclear on the back line allowed the Eagles’ Kenu Walker to slip into the box on the right side with only Wilmington netminder Vinny Tasca in front of him. Walker slid a shot to the far post, tucking it just inside the post for the 1-0 lead just 14:17 into the contest.

The Wildcats would go on to outshoot the Eagles, 5-1, the rest of the first half, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Ben Jordan found himself with a great opportunity in the 29th minute, getting on the end of a free kick but his header from in close went left of the goal.

The second half was more of the same for the Wildcats, as they continued to press to tie the match. The Wildcats outshot the Eagles, 4-1, in the first 25 minutes of the second half, having two chanced blocked in front while forcing Post goalkeeper Giovanni Riello to make one save.

The Wildcats’ chances rose again in the 72nd minute, as a Post foul behind the play resulted in a red card and an 11-on-10 advantage for the Wildcats for the final 18 minutes. Fredrik Bentdal’s ensuing free kick from just outside the 18-yard box was blocked at the wall and Sam Jester’s second chance was pushed just wide as well.

Scrambling in the box, Lorne Bickley found himself with the ball and the goalkeeper out of position. His shot was headed for the back of the net in the 78th minute, but an Eagles’ defender stepped in front and saved it off the line.

Coming in off the bench to start the second half, Dimitrios Topouzlis was a spark for the Wildcats getting two shots off late in the match. But his first shot in the 86th minute was just high off the mark while his second redirected half volley in the 89th minute needed to be saved by Riello.

The Wildcats outshot the Eagles, 19-3, in the match, including a 12-1 advantage in the second half. Riello made four saves for the shutout while Tasca recorded one save for the Wildcats.

The third seeded Wildcats finish the season 10-6-3 overall, going 9-3 in the CACC during the regular season for a third place finish.
