NEWARK, Del. ? Last week, members of the University of Delaware women's soccer team volunteered for the Girls on the Run Organization of Delaware at its bi-annual 5k race.

The mission of the nationwide Girls on the Run Organization is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running.

The Girls on the Run Organization strives to express joy, optimism, and gratitude through words, thoughts, and actions while nurturing physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

The Blue Hen women's soccer program volunteered at the race in Milford, Del on Nov. 23. The players worked as course marshals throughout the event and supported runners as they participated. The team made signs of encouragement for those who participated and cheered on the runners and their "buddies."

In Delaware, GOTR is a 12-week after-school program that is used to promote and inspire young girls. At the end of each Spring and Fall Season, there is a 5k event in Southern and Northern Delaware. The Southern event takes place in Milford and the Northern event takes place on the Waterfront in Wilmington.

"We had a great time being a part of the GOTR 5K in Milford," said Delaware assistant coach Nitan Soni. "This was more than just any community outreach for us, it is a fantastic platform for our players to fulfill their social responsibility as positive role models and directly support our community. The GOTR program provides hundreds of young girls throughout the state with inspiration, confidence, and friendships and to be a part of that process was a privilege. We hope in turn that our players were inspired by the courage and perseverance they saw on Saturday and we look forward to making this a team tradition."

SUBJECT: Chelsea Duffy and Allegra Gray of University of Delaware Women's Soccer Earn All-Region Honors

KANSAS CITY, Kan. ? Senior midfielder Chelsea Duffy and junior assistant captain Allegra Gray of the University of Delaware women's soccer team were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire All-Mid-Atlantic Region team.

Both Duffy and Gray were named to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region third team. The NSCAA honor marks the first time each student-athlete has earned an All-Region postseason honor their career.

The NSCAA, which is the world's largest soccer coaches' organization, is a non-profit organization with a mission to educate coaches, encourage excellence and serve the soccer community. It is the world's largest soccer coaches' organization with members at every level of the game. The membership is primarily made up of coaches, but also includes administrators, referees and others in the soccer industry. The NSCAA provides its members ways to enhance the game of soccer by providing a national education program, interaction and networking opportunities, and membership benefits.

"It's quite and honor to have two of our University of Delaware players chosen in such an elite group," said Blue Hen head coach Scott Grzenda.

Duffy, who also earned the first All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) first team honor of her career in 2013, played her last season as a Blue Hen this fall. The very quick and agile midfielder finished her senior season ranked second on the team in points (10), scoring three goals and passing out four assists.

Gray, who earned her second-straight All-CAA first team honor this season, was also named to the 2013 All-CAA Academic team as an honor student majoring in statistics with a minor in economics. The junior passed out only one assist this season, but served as the heart and soul of the Delaware defensive unit. Gray aided the Blue Hens defense that only allowed 19 goals this season.

"Chelsea and Allegra are very dynamic and exciting players to watch," said Grzenda. "It once again demonstrates that the University of Delaware has the academic and athletic reputation to attract such talented players. Losing Chelsea will be difficult as she has been the heart and soul of our midfield for the past four years, but we're extremely happy to have Allegra back for her senior year."

Duffy and Gray were two of nine student-athletes who represented the CAA on the All-Region team. Rebecca Sparks of James Madison and Leah Galton of Hofstra were named to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team while Caroline Casey of William & Mary and Emily Banes of Towson earned second team honors. Melissa Chapman of Drexel and Ashley Herdon of JMU were also named to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region third team.

RICHMOND, Va. ? Junior captain Allegra Gray of the University of Delaware women's soccer team earned the most prestigious academic honor of her career Wednesday as she was named the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) women's soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

"It is a great honor and well deserved that Allegra was named CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year," said Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda. "Allegra is an extremely focused individual and a competitor who thrives on and off the field."

Gray becomes the first-ever Blue Hen women's soccer play to earn the CAA's highest academic honor and is just the second student-athlete in women's soccer history to earn a conference scholar-athlete of the year award. The last Blue Hen to do so was Beth Hatt in 1996 when Delaware was a member of the North Atlantic Conference.

The midfielder is an honor student as a statistics major with a minor in economics. Gray is a three-time CAA Commissioner's Academic Award recipient and was a member of the CAA All-Academic women's soccer team in 2013. She serves as a representative for the Delaware's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) organization and works as a peer mentor. The junior is also on UD's Appellate Board of Student Conduct and is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

Most recently, Gray was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Mid-Atlantic Region third team. In November, Gray was selected to the All-CAA first team for the second year in a row. A defensive-minded midfielder, Gray helped the Blue Hens record 19 shutouts over the past three seasons.

"Allegra's award is a testament to our team and the University that we can attract such talented students and athletes," said Grzenda.
