Duke Wrestling to Host Blue/White Match Saturday in K-Ville

DURHAM, N.C.—With one week left until the 2016-17 officially gets underway, the Duke wrestling team will roll out the mat to Krzyzewskiville Saturday, Oct. 29 for its annual Blue/White intrasquad event. The match is free and open to the public as the set of nine duals will determine the starting lineup for the upcoming season.

For the first time in program history, the intrasquad matches will take place outside on the lawn in K-Ville and will begin at 11 a.m. This will be the final tune-up for the Blue Devils before heading to the Hokie Open Nov. 6.

Beginning his fifth season as the head coach, Glen Lanham welcomes back five starters to the lineup and four NCAA qualifiers. For the first time in program history, Lanham is fielding a veteran squad. Duke’s roster is comprised of 15 upperclassmen, including seven seniors. The five upperclassmen starters are a first for Lanham.

Leading the Blue Devils as captains in 2016-17 will be veterans Jacob Kasper, Jake Faust and Zach Finesilver. All have seen action at the NCAA Championships during their careers and are exceptional leaders on and off the mat.

Duke is set to wrestle five preseason top-20 teams, two of which come in the month of November. The Blue Devils will be looking for the Duke fans to come out in force for their home opener against No. 13 Wisconsin. It will be the ninth different Big Ten opponent Duke has faced under Lanham. The Blue

Devils defeated No. 23 Purdue on the road last season and lost on criteria to Northwestern.

The Blue Devils finished fifth in the ACC Championships last year and tied for 31st at the NCAA Championships. Lanham has sent at least four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in each of the past two seasons, a first for the program.

Black Team Picks Up Victory in Intrasquad Dual

October 29, 2016

DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke wrestlers donning the black singlets came away with the 30-9 win over the blue squad today in the annual Blue/White intrasquad match to help determine the starting lineup for the Blue Devils heading into the 2016-17 season.

The Black team picked up falls from Missouri transfer Cole Baumgartner at 133 pounds and Xavi Ramos at 149. The Blue team benefitted from a pin by returning NCAA qualifier Zach Finesilver at 141.

Senior Thayer Atkins put the Black singlet team up 3-0 early in a close match with Josh Copeland at 125. Atkins, behind early, used a strong third period to record the win.

Baumgartner controlled the match early and was able to get freshman Parker Walton on his back with 1:09 left in the third period for the six points. At 141, Finesilver pulled the Blue squad back within three with a first-period pin against Brandon Leynaud who wrestled at 133 a year ago.

Ramos, up to 149 from 133 last season, cruised to the pin in his match and freshman Garrett Neff scored four more points for the Black team to extend the lead to 13, 19-6, midway through the dual.

After wrestling two seasons at 157, Connor Bass will make the jump to 174 for the Blue Devils. In a tightly contested match with Alec Schenk, Bass edged the Ohio native for the decision.

Tyler Patrick grabbed three more points for Black, edging redshirt freshman Araad Sarrami at 184. Patrick took advantage of an early lead and was able to hold off a late shot from Sarrami for the decision.

The Black team concluded the afternoon with victories from Alex Belaia-Martiniouk at 197 and Jacob Kasper at heavyweight. Belaia-Martiniouk and rookie Roman Romero had an exciting match with a lot of movement, but it was the veteran that came through with the 7-5 decision.

Making the big jump from 184 to heavyweight, Kasper struck early and often in his match to score the 15-0 victory to conclude the day.

Zach Finesilver also wrestled in another match against Colten Thomas before the match was halted to injury.

The day concluded with an exhibition match between 165-pounders Jake Faust and Mitch Finesilver, who is redshirting this season. Both NCAA qualifiers, Faust came away with the decision in the tightly-contested bout.

Duke opens official action Nov. 6 at the Hokie Open. The Blue Devils’ first home dual comes against No. 13 Wisconsin Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

Richards, Brunson Set for All-Star Classic

Exhibition begins at 6 p.m. CT Saturday

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Fighting Illini wrestling seniors Zane Richards (133 pounds) and Zac Brunson (174 pounds) travel to Cleveland, Ohio this weekend for the 51st annual National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic, held on Saturday, November 5 at 6 p.m. central time. Richards will wrestle Nebraska’s Eric Montoya, while Brunson is matched against Ethan Ramos of North Carolina.

Richards is returning for his senior season after becoming one of the best in his weight class as a junior. The Carbondale, Illinois native began the season with 23 consecutive wins on his way to his first All-America honor and a runner-up finish. The 2016 Big Ten runner-up at 133 pounds, Richards touted a 9-0 dual record and was second on the team with 71 dual points. With 82 career wins, Richards is only 11 victories shy of moving into Illinois' top-25 career win list.

Brunson enters his senior season after going 22-5 as a junior in 2015-16 and placing runner-up at Big Ten Championships. The 174-poudner began the season with a 14-0 record before suffering an injury that sidelined him for the first half of the Big Ten season. Leading the team with 11 falls last season, Brunson had his most memorable one in the Big Ten semifinal when he pinned No. 6 Alex Meyer in 2:00. Brunson went 2-2 at NCAA Championships. Brunson begins the 2016-17 season ranked No. 8 by WIN Magazine.

The Eugene, Oregon native joins teammate Richards to become the 20th and 21st Illinois wrestlers to be invited to the event. The previous 18 Illini to wrestle in the event have combined for a 10-8 record with the most recent appearances coming in 2012 when the trio of Jesse Delgado (125), B.J. Futrell (141) and Jordan Blanton (174) represented the Orange and Blue. This is the second straight year that an Illini wrestler has been selected, as Isaiah Martinez was invited last season, but did not compete.

The exhibition has served as the kickoff to the collegiate wrestling season since 2004, and highlights some of the top wrestlers in the country. The event will be broadcasted live on FloWrestling.com through the use of a subscription. To purchase tickets for the event, visit http://www.goallstarclassic.com/tickets.

Dylan Hyder was a 2012 national qualifier in the 133 class following his title in the NCAA West Regional championships. Big 12 Championship sixth-place finisher Michael Billingsley also returns to the Falcon ranks at 174 pounds.

The Falcons will likely see some familiar faces in this year’s dual meet squad as six wrestlers from last year’s starters are chasing top spots. Drew Romero (125), Dylan Hyder (133), Jerry McGinty (149), Alex Lopouchanski (165), Anthony McLaughlin (197) and Parker Hines (197) claimed the majority of last season’s starts. The class of 2020 is made up of three state champions, four NHSCA All-Americans, two NCWA All-Americans and one NCWA National Champion.

THE CHAIN OF COMMAND: Head wrestling coach Sam Barber enters his third season at the reigns of Air Force wrestling. Barber first joined Air Force wrestling as an assistant coach under head coach Joel Sharratt in 2009. He is assisted by Bart Horton (10th season) and Chris Heilman (third season). The volunteer assistant coach for this season is Dustin Kilgore. Kilgore is a four-time MAC champion, three-time All-American and the only national champion Kent State has ever produced.

Parker Hines and Jerry McGinty have been named team captains for the 2016-17season. Hines led last season’s team in dual points (42), dual wins (10), dual meet bonus point wins (7) dual meet major decisions (4) and started in every dual meet in the 197 class. The Ellsworth, Wis., native logged 20 wins last season; second most on the team. He placed eighth at the Southern Scuffle, second at the All Academy Championships and third at the Cowboy Open.

BLACKSBURG -- For the past several seasons, the Virginia Tech wrestling program invested its time and work into “raising the bar” – a team motto that has morphed into the program’s identity.
After three straight top-10 finishes at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, the program reached new heights this past March when the Hokies made it to the podium at Madison Square Garden in New York City, coming in fourth place. The finish marked the program’s best and the best ever by an ACC team.

To raise the bar this season means finishing in the top three – or even win a national championship.

Kevin Dresser is down for the challenge.

“I’m one of those guys who always wants more and I’m an optimist, so our goal is to win a national title,” Tech’s coach said two weeks before the Hokies started workouts for the upcoming season. “That’s what we’re here to do. That’s the goal of the staff and I think that’s the goal of the team. We’ll know more when we start competing, but I hope they have that sense of urgency.

“I’ve always said that the ultimate goal is to be a top-five program year in and year out. When you make that statement, you better be in it to win it all.”

The ascension to the throne certainly will not be easy. No team outside of the Big Ten has taken home the crown in the past decade, and Penn State dominates collegiate wrestling these days, having won five of the past six national titles.

But of all the teams nationwide, the Hokies certainly appear on paper to be in the best position to break the Big Ten’s dominance. Tech lost three-time All-American Nick Brascetta to graduation, but the Hokies return the remainder of their lineup. Seven of the eight who qualified for the NCAA Championships return, including five All-Americans.

Ty Walz and Zach Epperly headline the contingent. Epperly, a redshirt junior at 174 pounds, won seven straight matches to finish third at the NCAAs after being upset in the first round. Walz, a redshirt senior, advanced to the semifinals at heavyweight before losing to eventual national champion Kyle Snyder of Ohio State. He ultimately finished fourth.

Joey Dance, another senior, earned All-America honors as a freshman. He gives the Hokies a total of six who have earned All-America honors at some point. Given that returning talent, Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine ranked the Hokies at No. 2 in its preseason poll.

Dresser, though, expressed concern about complacency coming off of the program’s huge accomplishments this past spring.

“I see certain guys making a run at it. They’re hungry,” he said. “I also see certain guys that I think are going to get snuck up on. The notoriety and the target on their backs … Everyone is going to be gunning for us. We have to learn how to step out and fight every time because people are going to want to take our head off.”

Read the rest of the preview, including a comprehensive breakdown by weight class, in the latest issue of Inside Hokie Sports.

The No. 4/6 Hokies open the 2016-17 season at Cassell Coliseum tomorrow, Nov. 5, where they will face Edinboro at 1 p.m. before taking on VMI at 3 p.m. Admission is free and the first 300 fans will receive a Virginia Tech wrestling "Raising The Bar" t-shirt.

Jackrabbit wrestlers topple Iowa State
11/4/2016 | Wrestling
South Dakota State won two matches by technical fall and added a pair of major decisions to defeat 18th-ranked Iowa State, 27-9, in a season-opening wrestling dual for both teams Friday night before a record crowd of 1,814 at Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits, who were the top team receiving votes in the preseason USA Today/National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, won seven matches overall, starting with a 14-2 major decision over Colston DiBlasi at 165 pounds.

The 174-pound matchup featured a pair of returning national qualifiers in Iowa State's seventh-ranked Lelund Weatherspoon and the Jackrabbits' David Kocer. Weatherspoon recorded a second-period escape to take a 1-0 lead into the final period, but Kocer evened the match with an early escape, then recorded the lone takedown of the bout with two seconds remaining to give SDSU a 7-0 lead and send the crowd into a frenzy.

Redshirt freshman Martin Mueller gave SDSU more bonus points with a dominating 19-6 major decision over Carson Powell in which he recorded six takedowns, a reversal and a four-point near-fall.

Iowa State got on the board in the 197-pound division as Patrick Downey, the seventh-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds, wrestled up a weight class and took down the Jackrabbits' ninth-ranked wrestler at 197, Nate Rotert, in an 8-6 decision.

SDSU closed out the first half of the dual with a 3-1 decision at heavyweight by Alex Macki over Iowa State freshman Nick Nolting.

The Jackrabbits' Seth Gross prevented Iowa State from gaining any further momentum after the Cyclones' won the 125-pound bout by turning in the first technical fall of the night with a 16-0 shutout of Nathan Boston.

Alex Kocer added the second technical fall win two bouts later with a 17-2, two-period victory over Blayne Briceno at 149 pounds, securing SDSU's first-ever dual victory over Iowa State in 10 tries.

Colin Holler closed out the Jackrabbit victory with a 5-2 decision over Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer at 157 pounds.

The Jackrabbits close out the weekend by hosting the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open on Sunday. Action begins at 9 a.m. at Frost Arena.

Pitt to face Ohio University and Campbell at West Virginia University.

Ohio Live Scoring | Campbell Live Scoring

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt wrestling team is set to open the 2016-17 season Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Moutaineer Duals in Morgantown, W.Va. The Panthers will face Ohio University at 10 a.m. before taking on Campbell at 2 p.m. All duals will be held in the WVU Coliseum.

Live scoring for the Pitt duals will be provided through TrackWrestling and can be found by using the links at the top of the page.

TEAM SERIES

- Sunday will be the sixth meeting between the Panthers and Bobcats.

- Pitt leads the all-time series 5-0.

- The two teams last met Dec. 16, 2007 in Athens, Ohio, which resulted in a 36-6 win for the Panthers.

- Pitt and Campbell clash for the first time Sunday.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS

- Ohio concluded the 2015-16 season 13-3 overall with a third place finish at the MAC Championships.

- The Bobcats return three of seven NCAA qualifiers from a year ago including sophomore Cameron Kelly at 133 pounds, redshirt sophomore Austin Reese at 165 pounds and sophomore Shakur Laney at 125 pounds.

- Kelly enters the season ranked No. 13 by InterMat, while Reese checks in at No. 19.

SCOUTING THE CAMELS

- Campbell finished the 2015-16 season 3-13 overall, but the season was highlighted by a notable performance from Nathan Kraisser at 133 pounds.

- Kraisser, the SoCon 133 champion, finished the season 34-9 overall and made a run at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Prior to joining the team in Morgantown on Sunday, Kraisser will compete in the 2016 NWCA All-Star Classic in Cleveland, Ohio, Saturday, Nov. 5.

- The redshirt senior moved down to 125 this season and is the lone Camel in the InterMat preseason rankings, checking in at No. 14.

PANTHERS IN THE POLLS

- As a team, the Panthers enter the season ranked No. 23 by the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll. Pitt concluded the 2015-16 season receiving votes.

- In the InterMat preseason rankings, junior Dom Forys is ranked No. 9 amongst 133-pounders and redshirt junior Ryan Solomon comes in at No. 15 at 285 pounds.

- Forys is one of two ACC wrestlers ranked in their weight class, as NC State’s Jamal Morris ranks 18th.

- Like Forys, Solomon is also amongst one other ACC member in his weight class with senior Ty Walz out of Virginia Tech coming in at No. 2 behind U.S. Olympic gold medalist Kyle Snyder of Ohio State.

FIERCE FORYS RETURNS

- Forys is back for his junior season with the bar raised higher than last year.

- The two-time NCAA qualifier fell short at in the 2016 ACC Championship finals at 133 pounds, falling to Virginia’s George DiCamillo in an 8-4 decision.

- At the NCAA Championships Forys was one win short of earning All-America status after a trip that was highlighted by pinning NC State’s Jamal Morris in 5:38.

- An All-ACC selection, Forys finished his sophomore campaign 28-5 overall, 15-2 in duals, 5-0 against ACC opponents and mixed in a few upsets, going 5-3 against ranked wrestlers.

- In duals at 133, Forys contributed 68 points to the Panthers, the most of any weight class.

YOUNG NO MORE

- Last season’s lineup consisted of seven underclassmen.

- The Pitt lineup lost just two wrestlers to graduation in Ronnie Garbinsky (157) and Nick Bonaccorsi (197).

- Although the group was young, the 2015-16 Panthers concluded the season 10-7 and were ranked in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll for nine straight weeks, reaching as high as No. 16.

- Four of the five 2016 NCAA qualifiers were underclassmen.

NEW TO THE LINEUP

- Two true freshmen will make their debut in a Pitt singlet this weekend in Jake Wentzel and Christian Dietrich.

- Wentzel, a local product out of South Park High School and two-time state champion, will fill the open gap at 157 pounds after losing Garbinsky to graduation.

- Dietrich also comes to Pitt with an accomplished high school career under his belt. The Greene, N.Y., native first wrestled at Greene High School where he was a state champion at 182 pounds before making the move to Wyoming Seminary where he helped his team to the 2016 National Prep School Wrestling Championship title.

LOOKING AHEAD

- Pitt will make the day trip to Edinboro to take on the Fighting Scots Sunday, Nov. 13, for a 1 p.m. start.

- The Panthers returns to Pittsburgh for the home opener Friday, Nov. 18, to face cross-state rival Lehigh in the Fitzgerald Field House.

Senior All-American Eric Montoya (133) fell to Zane Richards (Illinois), 9-7 in the NWCA All-Star Classic at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday night. Montoya held a 7-6 lead early in the third period, but a late take down by Richards resulted in a comeback win for the Illini grappler.

Montoya, who finished fifth at 133 pounds at the 2016 NCAA Championships, is the No. 4-ranked wrestler in that weight class by InterMat, while Richards is ranked second. Richards took fourth place at last year’s NCAA Championships after a 27-3 record.

Montoya, an Albuquerque, N.M., native, is the 32nd Husker to wrestle in the NWCA All-Star Classic, and first since both James Green and Robert Kokesh competed in the 2014 event. Montoya is a three-time NCAA qualifier (twice at Nebraska) and took fifth place at last year’s Big Ten Championships. He went 29-10 overall last season.

The majority of the Nebraska wrestling team will compete at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D., on Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. (CT). The tournament will be streamed live on Flowrestling.org (subscription required), while live results and brackets will be on TrackWrestling.com.

BLACKSBURG – The No. 6 Virginia Tech wrestling team kicked off its 2016-2017 season at Cassell Coliseum on Saturday with two victories over Edinboro and VMI. The Hokies topped the Fighting Scots, 24-13, before defeating the Keydets, 39-6.

Seven Hokies went 2-0 on the day while two other grapplers went 1-1 between the two dual meets.

“Well today was a start, but far from a great start,” head coach Kevin Dresser. “We have a lot of work to do. We need to have a great week at practice, not a good week. We need a lot of these guys to buy in all the way, not just 80 percent of the way.”

Tech opened the day against Edinboro, winning three of ten matchups in a highly physical dual meet. The Hokies came out on top for two of the three ranked matchups including a thrilling bout at 149 between No. 10 Patricio Lugo of Edinboro and No. 7 Solomon Chishko. Chishko recorded a takedown with the clock expiring in the third period and registered another in the sudden-death overtime period to win 7-5.

Senior Sal Mastriani, who trailed 9-2 at the end of the first period against Chase Dlande at 157, followed Chishko’s win with a comeback 15-10 victory, putting Tech ahead 13-4 in the match. Edinboro pulled within 13-7 after taking the bout at 165 but the heart of the Hokies lineup featuring All-Americans Zach Epperly at 174, Zack Zavatasky at 184 and Jared Haught at 197 all produced victories to give the Hokies a 24-13 win.

Three technical falls, two falls, and four regular decisions led to the 39-6 victory over VMI.

Dennis Gustafson (141), Chishko and Mastriani all walked away with second-period technical falls. Zavatsky and Haught had back-to-back pins, giving the Hokies a 39-0 lead before forfeiting the heavyweight match. The pin for Zavatsky came at 1:30 in the first period while Haught picked up a fall in 3:26.

The Hokies will next take the stage at the Moss Arts Center against Chattanooga next Sunday, November 13, at 1 p.m. A limited number of tickets are still available and can be purchased online at HokieSports.com.

Cowboys Rout Bucknell in Season Opener, 36-3

Interview with Kyle Crutchmer:

MIAMI, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team proved worthy of its No. 1 ranking in its season opener Sunday afternoon, dominating Bucknell in a 36-3 dual victory behind five bonus-point wins at NEO Fieldhouse.

Kyle Crutchmer highlighted the day with a first-period fall in the 174-pound bout, while Nick Piccininni and Jonce Blaylock recorded technical falls and Kaid Brock and Chandler Rogers added major decisions. Dean Heil was also victorious at 141 pounds in the only match that featured two ranked wrestlers.

“I’m feeling better about my team right now,” head coach John Smith said. ”I was a little concerned going in with a few starters out, and you don’t like starting your season like that.”

The Cowboys opened the match with bonus points at 125 pounds as 15th-ranked Nick Piccininni recorded a 15-0 tech fall over Jordan Gessner in 3:46. Piccininni jumped out early, scoring 12 points in the first period, thanks to a takedown, a two-point near fall and a couple of four-point near falls. Starting the second period on bottom, the redshirt freshman escaped and converted a takedown 45 seconds into the frame to finish the match and pick up the first dual victory of his career.

At 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Kaid Brock scored bonus points in his return to the mat from a season-ending injury last year. Brock knocked off Bucknell’s Joey Gould in a 16-6 major decision to expand the Oklahoma State lead to 9-0.

“In the end, I thought we looked pretty sharp at 125 and 133,” Smith said. “Not that we were perfect. It’s hard to be perfect, but getting out there, scoring points and a lot of riding on our part. I didn’t expect that.”

Matched up with 19th-ranked Tyler Smith, returning 141-pound NCAA champion Dean Heil recorded a decision to push the Cowboy lead to 12-0. Heil notched three takedowns in the opening period to take an early 6-2 lead, and after a takedown with 35 seconds left in the second, Heil took an 8-5 lead into the final frame. The junior would close it out with ease, earning a 14-7 decision with riding time.

Jonce Blaylock impressed in his 2016-17 debut, tallying a 21-2 tech fall over Seth Hogue in the 149-pound bout. Blaylock dropped Hogue for a takedown 30 seconds into the match, and recorded a pair of two-point near falls to cap off the first period. Leading, 14-2, heading into the third period, Blaylock would finish strong and score seven quick points to record the tech fall in 6:37.

The Cowboys took their lone loss of the day at 157 pounds, as Bucknell’s Victor Lopez held off junior Davey Dolan in a 7-5 decision.

Fifth-ranked Chandler Rogers posted a 9-1 major decision over Bucknell’s Logan Kerin in his first match down at 165 pounds after competing at 174 last season. Rogers led throughout the match, and picked up the riding time point for the bonus point win.

Returning from an injury that cut his 2016 campaign short, senior Kyle Crutchmer couldn’t have asked for a better return. Crutchmer pinned Chad Reese 1:32 into the first period to put the Pokes up, 27-3.

“This was something that I had been looking forward to,” Crutchmer said. “Not just the pin, but the match. I’ve been out for about six months. I’ve been training a little bit for the last couple of months, but coming back and having a pin. It’s unbelievable.”

Senior Nolan Boyd (184), redshirt sophomore Preston Weigel (197) and senior Austin Schafer (285) each recorded decisions to close out the match, giving the Cowboys their first triumph of the season.

Oklahoma State’s next dual match will send the Cowboys back out on the road to face No. 15 Minnesota on Nov. 27 in Minneapolis.

No. 23 Panthers Finish 2-0 at Mountaineer Duals

Pitt Defeats Ohio and Campbell in Morgantown, W.Va.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Pitt wrestling team (2-0) collected two wins at the Mountaineer Duals Sunday, Nov. 6, at the WVU Coliseum to open the 2016-17 season.

The Panthers first defeated Ohio, 21-16, before recording a 21-13 win over Campbell.

Freshman Jake Wentzel and sophomore TeShan Campbell were the lone Panthers to pin their opponents on the day, both of which came against Ohio opponents.

“I think it was a good start,” said head coach Jason Peters. “We got to see some guys for the first time and some at new weights. We’ll get ready this week and maybe change some guys around. Overall I thought it was good, the warm-ups were good, the weight cut was good so those are definitely some positives from the first weekend out.”

Pitt vs. Ohio

At 133 pounds, it was a battle between No. 9 Dom Forys and No. 13 Cameron Kelly. Kelly took the first lead of the match early on in the first, but Forys would record five takedowns in the second and third periods to secure a 10-6 decision, tying the dual 3-3.

Senior Mikey Racciato then stepped in to take on Cullen Cummings at 149 pounds, looking to bring back the Pitt lead. Racciato struck early with a takedown, but Cummings escaped. In the second, Cummings started on bottom and escaped, tying the score 2-2. Racciato did the same in the third and held on to win in a 3-2 decision, tying the dual 6-6.

At 157 pounds, freshman Jake Wentzel made his collegiate debut against Zach Wilson and did not disappoint. Wentzel recorded four points in the first period by way of takedown and nearfall. He added a takedown in the second, taking a 6-0 lead. Soon after, Wentzel pinned Wilson in 4:12 to give Pitt the lead, 12-6.

Wrestling for the first time at 165 pounds was sophomore TeShan Campbell as he took on No. 19 Austin Reese. Campbell scored the lone points of the match with a takedown in the first and pinned Reese in 2:10, extending Pitt’s lead to 18-6.

In the final bout of the opening dual, redshirt junior Ryan Solomon came out and dominated Zak Parker, controlling the majority of the match. The 15th-ranked heavyweight won in a 6-2 decision, securing the Panthers victory, 21-16.

Pitt vs. Campbell

Forys picked up his second win of the day by way of major decision over Campbell’s Jonathan Ryan, 17-6. Forys took the lead in the first period, 4-2, and dominated in the second with an escape, two takedown and a four-point nearfall. The Pittsburgh product collected four more points in the third with riding time, earning him 17-6 major decision, giving Pitt the lead, 4-3.

Wentzel also picked up his second win of the day at 157 pounds over Austin Kraisser, 10-6. The freshman recorded four points in the first period and scored the rest of his points in the third by way of three escapes, a takedown and capped it off with riding time.

Campbell kept the momentum going at 165 pounds, winning in an 8-3 decision over Quentin Perez. The Pittsburgh product recorded an escape, three takedowns and added a point with riding time en route to his decision.

Rider at Southeast Open

Walsh Champion, Clagon and Wert Runners-up, Stinson 3rd

ROANOKE, VIRGINIA—The Broncs competed in the Southeast Open, formerly known as the Hokie Open, on Saturday to begin the 2016-17 season. “We saw some good things today,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor, who has seen many good things in his 39 seasons at Rider, “but we have a lot of work to do. Today was a good learning experience. We still need to get better, to get tougher, but I am not disappointed.”

For Rider, junior Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, N.J. /Camden Catholic) won the 165 pound weight class, winning all five of his matches. “Chad was impressive throughout the tournament,” Taylor said.

In the finals Walsh pinned the sixth seed, Seldon Wright of ODU in 4:43 for the title. The top seed at 165, Walsh defeated the fourth seed, Forrest Przybysz of App. State 22-8 in the semifinals. Walsh defeated Cody Harrington (unattached) in the quarterfinals by the score of 8-0. Walsh pinned Princeton’s Riley Demos at 4:10 in the first round and defeated Joe Velliquette of UPenn3-0 in the second round.

Sophomore J.R. Wert (Christiansburg, Va. /Christiansburg) finished runner-up at 125. “Wert did a good job,” Taylor said. “He’s been out of competition for some time but had a good tournament. It has been almost a year and a half that he hasn’t wrestled. He had to beat some good people to reach the finals.”

In the finals, unseeded Wert lost to the top seed, Sean Russell of Edinboro, 12-4. “He lost to a pretty tough wrestler,” Taylor said. Wert won 6-5 in the semifinals against the third seed, Vito Pasone of App. State. Wert won 5-3 over Thayer Atkins of Duke after a first round bye and pinned Pat Kearney of The Citadel in 56 second in the quarterfinals.

Junior B.J. Clagon (Toms River, N.J. /Toms River HS South) finished runner-up. In the finals, Clagon, the number one seed at 157, lost to the number two seed Russell Parsons of Army 4-2 on riding time. “BJ wrestled a tough kid from Army,” Taylor said. “We’ll get him back on target. He didn’t have a bad tournament but there are some things we can change that will help him.”

Clagon won 10-6 in the semifinals against Mike D’Angelo of Princeton. In the quarterfinals Clagon pinned Michael Elliott of App State in 2:27. Clagon won 3-2 over Alex Rice of Newbury and defeated Ben Schram of ODU 6-3.

Senior Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, N.J. /Northern Burlington Regional) placed third at 174, winning four of five matches. “Wayne is wrestling well,” Taylor said. In consolation finals Stinson defeated Dan McDevit of Penn. In the semifinals Stinson lost 6-4 to the number one seed, Ion Schleifer of Princeton, Stinson won 21-6 tech fall over Campbell’s Melik Jimenez and defeated Shabaka Johns of VMI in the second round. Stinson defeated Quinton Hiles of Penn 15-6 in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Dean Sherry (Brick, NJ) placed fifth at 174. After a first round bye Sherry lost but in consolations won four matches. “Both of our 174s did a nice job,” Taylor said.

Junior Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, N.J. /Franklin) placed sixth at 184. In the battle for fifth place, Daves lost 5-3 to the top seed, Jack Dechow of ODU. In the championship quarterfinals Fagg-Daves lost in triple overtime to Jason Grimes of American. In consolations he lost to the third seed, Samson Imonode of Army after winning 3-1 over Jabari Irons of Brewton-Parker David Peters-Logue of App. State in the conso semifinals.

Senior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del. /Caravel Academy), number two seed at 197, went 1-1 before an injury. “He got his bell rung when they hit heads,” Taylor said. Wolfe defeated Maveric Reichsteiner of Emmanuel with a 13-4 major decision. The seventh seed, Ben Darmstadt of Finger Lakes Prep, pinned Wolfe in 2:57 in the quarterfinals.

At 125 senior Brenden Calas Clark, N.J. /Seton Hall Prep) went 1-2. Calas won 7-5 on riding time over VMI’s Dalton Henderson but against the fourth seed, Calas lost 3-2 McClay of Notre Dame College. In consolations round of four Calas lost 7-3 to Thayer Atkins of Duke.

Freshman Ryan Cloud (Brookville, Ohio /Northmont) went 1-2. In consolations semifinals Cloud lost 3-1 to Cory Daniel pf UNC. Cloud defeated Princeton’s Mike Markulec 4-2 after a consolation forfeit win. After a first round bye, Cloud was pinned by Jacob Kasper of Duke and defeated K. Mason of Emmanuel.

The Broncs compete again November 13 at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic in Troy, NY. “It is going to be different from anything we’ve been in, an experimental type of tournament,” Taylor said.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Rider University wrestling team, fresh off of an impressive showing at the Southeast Open, is ranked 24th in the nation by InterMat.

At the Southeast Open (formerly the Hokie Open) in Virginia, the Broncs produced a champion, two runners-up, a third, a fifth and a sixth place finisher.

Junior Chad Walsh, who won the 165 pound weight class at the SE Open, is currently ranked fifth in the nation. Walsh placed fifth at the NCAA Championships last year at 157 to earn All-America honors.

Junior BJ Clagon, who placed runner-up at the SE Open, is ranked 15th in the nation at 157. In 2015 Clagon placed fifth at the NCAA Championships at 149 to earn All-America honors.

Senior Ryan Wolfe is currently ranked 12th in the nation at 197. Wolfe went just 1-1 at the SE Open due to an injury. Wolfe is a two-time Eastern Wrestling League Champion and placed fourth at the University Freestyle Nationals last summer.

The Broncs take to the mats again November 13 at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic in Troy, NY.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI wrestling opened its dual season with two wins at home in the West Gym, beating University of Nebraska-Kearney, 43-0, and Utah Valley, 24-12.
(11/11/2016) Wrestling: Utah Valley vs. UNI

The Panthers hosted three duals, including match-ups between UNK and UVU. UNI improved to 2-0. Utah Valley split 1-1, and UNK fell to 0-2.

“I saw a lot of good things,” said head coach Doug Schwab. “Utah Valley really made our guys earn a lot of things. I think we still have some weight classes up for grabs.”

UNK DUAL
The Panthers, ranked 23rd in the latest NWCA coaches poll, earned bonus points in seven matches against UNK, getting falls from Jay Schwarm at 125 pounds and Max Thomsen.

Schwarm got the Panthers on the board early with a fall in 1 minute, 2 seconds. Josh Alber kept the momentum building 2:24 of riding time in the first period. He went on to tally more than four minutes of riding time to earn a 15-1 tech fall.

Two more Panthers earned tech falls in their opening dual. Taylor Lujan had five first-period takedowns and went on to record a tech fall in 5:33.

UTAH VALLEY DUAL
Alber was the first to get UNI on the board with his second set of bonus points for the night. He beat Jarod Maynes, 20-11.

A late takedown by Jake Hodges gave him the lead, but an escape at the buzzer sent the 141-pound match into sudden victory. Hodges struck right away with a takedown to win 9-7 and put the Panthers up 7-3.

Thomsen followed up his fall with a major decision, earning more than three minutes in riding time.

Bryce Steiert took the mat for the Panthers for the first time this season. His 7-4 decision kept the Panther lead, 14-3.

After his major decision at 157 pounds against UNK, Paden Moore moved up to 165 pounds but wasn’t able to hold off Koy Wilkinson, who won 8-5.

Lujan had four takedowns to help him grab an 11-9 decision over Kimball Bastian.

After wrestling at 197 pounds earlier in the night, Foster fell back to the 184-pound weight class to earn his second set of bonus points. He earned more than three minutes of riding time and went on to win 13-5.

JJ Everard sealed UNI’s win with a 3-2 decision.

UP NEXT: The Panthers will send wrestlers to the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open Sunday. UNI hosts No. 6 Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 in the West Gym. Student-athletes will be signing autographs following the dual.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The most decorated wrestler in Ohio State – and arguably NCAA – history can add another line to his international resume.

Top-seeded Logan Stieber, making his debut at 61kg at the Bill Farrell Open on Friday, punched his ticket on the 2016 World Team with a two dominant wins over second-seeded Tyler Graff. As a result, Stieber will compete at the 2016 World Championships for non-Olympic weights Dec. 10-11 in Budapest, Hungary. The Bill Farrell Open served as the World Team Trials for non-Olympic weights when the 2016 World Championships were added to the United World Wrestling calendar.

The finals were a best two out of three series, and Stieber ended the opening match with a takedown and gut wrench for a 10-0 technical fall. He followed the exact same script in match two, gaining an early 2-0 lead on a takedown, getting another to make it 4-0 and finishing it off with a six-point gut wretch. Stieber is just the second four-time NCAA champion to also make a World team.

In the semifinals, Stieber was pushed early by former Minnesota Golden Gopher Jayson Ness, but kept adding to his lead before winning 13-6. The two were tied 4-4 midway through but Stieber pulled away, building an 8-4 lead shortly after the break and never looking back.

“He has looked good. This training is on point. Logan likes to mix it up and get in a lot of positions. Against Ness, who can be dangerous, he held back a little bit. I see his scoring going up against Graff in the finals. He is in a groove. Logan is a risk taker and he will take risks tonight, which for him is being consistent,” Buckeye assistant coach and Ohio RTC head coach Tervel Dlagnev said to USA Wrestling.

Another Stieber – two-time All-American and 2013 Big Ten champion Hunter Stieber – once again displayed him immense potential while healthy. Stieber made the finals of the 65kg weight class, losing a highly entertaining 12-10 decision to BJ Futrell. Stieber trailed 12-6 late in the final period but fought back to cut the lead to two. He couldn’t, however, get any closer.

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

Former Illini B.J. Futrell Wins 65kg Title at Bill Farrell Open

Jimmy Kennedy defeats Isaiah Martinez in 70kg semifinal

NEW YORK – Former Illini wrestler B.J. Futrell won the 65kg/143lbs weight division at the Bill Farrell Open Friday evening, defeating former Ohio State wrestler Hunter Stieber in the gold medal match, 12-10. Also competing at Bill Farrell was current Illini Isaiah Martinez and former Illini Jimmy Kennedy. Kennedy defeated Martinez in the semifinal round by a 10-9 decision before dropping the tournament final to Jordan Oliver.

After easily dispatching his opponents in the opening two rounds, Futrell wrestled Ulukman Mamaotv for a spot in the evening’s gold medal match. Futrell jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over Mamaotv and held on to advance to the final against Titan Mercury teammate Hunter Stieber.

In the gold medal match, Futrell fell behind 2-0 before using a feet-to-back and a takedown to forge ahead, 6-2. After a takedown and gut by Stieber to tie the match, Futrell came back with four points of his own, and gained an extra point after Stieber unsuccessfully challenged. Stieber mounted a late comeback with four more points, but Futrell held off Stieber, 12-10, to win the 65kg weight division.

Martinez and Kennedy each won handedly in their preliminary duals to advance to the quarterfinals, where Martinez again rolled in his bout against Kellen Russell, defeating him by technical fall, 11-0. In Kennedy’s quarterfinal match, the former Illini fell behind 4-3 in the final period before notching a takedown in the final minute to win by decision, 5-4 over Nazar Kulchytsky. With both Illini on the same side of the bracket, the two victories set up an all-Illini semifinal.

In the semifinal, Kennedy jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first period, only to have Martinez scrap his way back. With 2:22 left in the match, Martinez cut Kennedy’s lead in half, 8-4. After the two Illini traded takedowns, Kennedy led Martinez 10-6 with 1:56 remaining. After getting a pushout called on Kennedy, Martinez notched his third takedown to bring him to within a point with 14 seconds left. However, Kennedy was hang on for a 10-9 decision, advancing him to the tournament final.

Wrestling Jordan Oliver in the 70kg tournament final, Kennedy jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after a shot clock violation was called on Oliver. After a pushout to tie the match, 1-1, Oliver used a four-point blast double to take a 5-1 lead. Oliver finished off the victory with two more takedowns to win by decision, 9-2.

Fighting Illini wrestling opens the 2016-17 season tomorrow morning, November 11 when they compete at the Maryville Kaufman Brand Open in St. Louis, Missouri. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. central time.

Four Badgers capture first-place titles at Journeymen Classic

Crone, Medbery, Reinhardt and Ritter claim first tournament crowns of season

On the Web: http://go.wisc.edu/a0v7z2

TROY, N.Y. -- Four Badgers captured first-place titles as 14 total Wisconsin wrestlers competed against some of the nation's top talent at the Journeymen Classic on Sunday.

"We saw some good things but also some things we needed to work on," UW head coach Barry Davis said. "I think some guys needed to compete for a full seven minutes and some guys did. We have to realize that, when you wrestle, it's a seven-minute match unless you get a pin or tech fall. You keep competing the full seven minutes."

Coming off of a win at the prestigious NWCA All-Star Classic, senior Connor Medbery carried his momentum into the tournament to take first in the 285-pound bracket. The third-ranked wrestler picked up a technical fall at 2:16 in his first match before taking down Minnesota's fifth-ranked Michael Kroells with a dominant 10-0 major decision. In the finals, Medbery faced yet another top-10 opponent in fourth-ranked Tanner Hall of Arizona State, but Medbery came away with the tournament crown by taking down Hall 3-2. He has now defeated three top-10 opponents within one week.

Hunter Ritter won his first two matches by decision, 7-1 and 12-3, to move on to the finals. The 184-pounder beat Cortland's Colin Barber 6-2 to capture his third tournament title as a Badger and first while wrestling attached.

149-pounder Andrew Crone beat his first two opponents by decision, 11-3 and 15-4, before beating Joshua Maruca of Arizona State 13-1 to earn first place.

Mason Reinhardt also picked up his first tournament title at Wisconsin after collecting two pins. The 197-pounder recorded a pin at 3:55 in the first match and won his second match 5-3 to advance to the finals, where a pin of Arizona State's Austyn Harris at 1:33 sealed the victory.

Both Jens Lantz and Michael Cullen finished second in the 125-pound class. Lantz won two matches by decision, but fell to Dalton Duffield of Oklahoma in the finals. Fellow Badger Cullen dropped his first match, 10-3, but rebounded with a 4-0 win in the second round and 6-4 sudden victory against Charles Lenox of North Carolina State.

Also earning second place was Ricky Robertson, who finished with a 2-1 record in his first time competing at 197 pounds. After easily winning his first two matches 6-2 and 5-2, he fell to Ohio State's Kollin Moore 12-11.

FAIRFAX, Va. – In the two weeks leading up to Indiana's dual at George Mason on Thursday evening, head coach Duane Goldmanchallenged his grapplers. After dropping their second dual of the season, he wanted to see how the young dual lineup would respond after a loss.

The Hoosiers (2-1) responded emphatically, earning five wins with bonus points on the way to a 35-6 victory over the Patriots (0-1).

"I thought they responded really well. They came in with a good attitude and wrestled a lot harder, with a little more resiliency in situations," Goldman said. "A lot of young guys like Jake Hinz, Garrett Pepple, and Fletcher Miller had some nice wins that they needed to get. It was a good result."

Much of Indiana's success against the Patriots came from the spark in the first two bouts. No. 12 Elijah Oliver (3-0) opened the dual at 125 lbs. with a 72-second pin, his second of the season and his third win with bonus points. Immediately following in the 133 lbs. match, Garrett Pepple (2-1) sealed the deal against Lio Quezzada (0-1) before the end of the first period. Pepple grabbed a takedown and four back points before securing the win by fall in 2:51.

"That's always huge anytime you can start a dual meet with a fall, and even better with two," said Goldman. "It definitely gets the ball rolling for anyone else coming up behind them, so that was a really important start for us. It's one we needed coming into this match."

Indiana returned to the win column at 157 lbs., when Jake Danishek (2-1) tallied seven takedowns for a 16-6 major decision against Matthew Raines (0-1). It sparked a dominating closing stretch, as the Hoosiers won the final seven bouts.

Bryce Martin (1-1) saw his hand raised for the first time this season after grinding out a 10-5 decision over Garrett Tingen (0-1). Devin Skatzka (3-0) did more of the same at 174 lbs., remaining unbeaten on the year with a 6-3 decision win.

No. 6 Nate Jackson (3-0) continued his unblemished start to the 2016-17 season at 184 lbs. with his third pin at 3:22. Jackson racked up five takedowns in the first period alone, followed by two takedowns and the eventual win by fall.

"He looked a lot better, started to get back in his form today," Goldman said regarding his returning All-American. "Even on the California trip, he dominated the matches but wasn't quite in his rhythm yet. Today he looked like he was getting back in sync."

Redshirt freshman Jake Hinz (1-1) earned his first career varsity win, an imposing 20-7 major decision over Andrew Thomas (0-1) in the penultimate 197 lbs. bout. Hinz led 9-2 after two periods, with 2:33 in riding time, before pouring on five takedowns in the final two minutes.

Fletcher Miller (2-1) outlasted reigning UWW Greco Roman University National Champion Matt Voss (0-1) in the heavyweight bout, claiming a 3-2 decision win. An escape by Voss tied the contest early in the third period, but Miller struck with a takedown midway through the final round. Miller rode away the riding time point, and contained Voss long enough to prevent a comeback attempt.

Junior Luke Blanton (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year in the 149 lbs. match, 10-3, to George Mason's senior captain, Sahid Kargbo. Blanton scored on an escape in the first and a reversal in the second.

The Hoosiers also saw a promising performance in the 141 lbs. bout from sophomore Cole Weaver (0-1). Although Weaver fell in sudden victory, 3-1, he wrestled his first match since suffering a season-ending injury on January 29, 2016 in a dual versus Ohio State. "Even though he lost, it was important for him to get out there and break the ice," Goldman said.

Indiana will remain in the Washington, D.C. metro area this weekend for their first tournament of the season, the 2016 Navy Classic at the United States Naval Academy. The Hoosiers join 11 other teams, including George Mason, in setting up a tournament with tantalizing potential matchups in all 10 brackets.

"We haven't looked forward too much, but they'll get a night to sleep on it," Goldman said on the upcoming tournament. "We'll get back in the room tomorrow and train a little bit, go over some things, and get refocused for the weekend."
