PITTSBURGH – The 21st ranked Pitt wrestling team (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of No. 11 Lehigh (2-0) Friday night in the Fitzgerald Field House.

“I think it was a tough night for us,” head coach Jason Peters said. “Lehigh came here to hustle and they wrestled that way. They were just better than us tonight and they beat us on the whistle in a lot of positions. I think there were some good fights, but obviously not enough to beat a team like Lehigh.”

Pittsburgh natives Dom Forys and TeShan Campbell were the lone Panthers to record wins in the dual.

Forys, the eighth-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds, put Pitt within one after a 9-4 decision over No. 18 Scott Parker, 4-3. With the victory, Forys improves to 4-0 this season and 49-19 in his career.

Campbell, the 13th-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds, also improved his season record to 4-0 after his win. Competing at a new weight class this season, Campbell came out of the gate ready to battle as he secured a win by technical fall in just 2:44 with a final score of 16-1.

After just four duals this season, Forys and Campbell combine for 31 of Pitt’s 70 total team points.

The Panthers resume action Sunday, Nov. 20, as they look to defend their title at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia.

No. 10 Rutgers Wrestling Wins “Battle at the Birthplace” vs. Princeton at High Point Solutions Stadium

Programs draw second-highest dual attendance in NCAA wrestling history

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 19, 2016)– No. 10 Rutgers wrestling (4-0) and Princeton (0-1) drew the second-highest crowd in NCAA dual history Saturday at High Point Solutions Stadium, where the Scarlet Knights defeated the Tigers, 19-16, in the “Battle at the Birthplace” presented by Autoland.

The teams split the dual, 5-5, but bonus points for RU in the form of two major decisions and a tech fall from Nicholas Gravina at 184 pounds gave the Scarlet Knights their 21st-straight win in the series.

“I thought it was an awesome atmosphere,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “It was a little bit different obviously than being in the RAC, it’s hard to get that feel of the fans right on the mat, but still, tremendous crowd, and good for New Jersey wrestling. I want to thank Princeton and their administration for all their help through this, about seven, eight months in the making.”

RVISION: Battle at the Birthplace Post-Match Press Conference

A total of 16,178 fans filed into High Point Solutions Stadium Saturday for the historic dual match against the Tigers. Rutgers picked up decision wins from No. 13 Tyson Dippery at 133 pounds and Ken Theobold at 149 pounds, followed by back-to-back major decisions from John Van Brill (157 pounds) and Richie Lewis (165 pounds). Gravina captured RU’s final win of the afternoon, 24-3, against No. 17 Ian Baker.

At 125 pounds, Sean McCabe dropped a tightly contested 2-0 bout against Ty Agaisse. Agaisse rode McCabe out in the second period and escaped with 1:18 left in the third for the victory.

No. 13-ranked Dippery built a 6-0 lead after two periods and never looked back, despite D’Arcy scoring a takedown in the final period. Dippery improved to a team-best 8-0 on the year.

No. 3 Anthony Ashnault fell by a last-second takedown against No. 10 Matthew Kolodzik in the series rubber-match between the two in-state foes. Ashnault led 3-2 down the stretch, but Kolodzik struck with five ticks left for the win and a 2-1 lead all-time against Ashnault.

No. 14 Theobold bumped his record to 6-0 this season with a 6-4 decision against No. 19 Jordan Laster. Laster scored with 1:06 left in the third period to tie the match at 4-4. Officials reviewed whether or not Laster scored back points, but the call on the mat for a takedown alone was confirmed. Theobold escaped 20 seconds later and earned the riding time point for the 6-4 win, tying the dual at 6-6.

Van Brill scored six points on a takedown and four-point near fall in the final period to close out a 14-3 major decision with riding time. Lewis (1-0), ranked No. 6 at 157 pounds, stepped on the line a match later at 165 pounds and overpowered Joe Tavoso in a 17-6 major decision.

No. 16 Jonathan Schleifer and Phillip Bakuckas were knotted at 1-1 after seven minutes at 174 pounds. After 40 seconds of sudden victory and a long scramble, the wrestlers returned to the neutral position, where Schleifer attacked and scored a takedown on the edge.

Gravina, ranked No. 14, stayed unbeaten with a dominant performance against No. 17 Ian Baker. The Allendale, New Jersey, native scored 20 points in the final two periods, ending the match with four back points in a 24-3 final. Gravina’s win made it a 19-9 match with two bouts left.

The Tigers captured wins in the final two matches at 197 pounds and heavyweight, but could not make up the difference in the team score. Anthony Messner battled to lose by decision against No. 4 Brett Harner, 8-2, while Marc McDonald fell to No. 18 Ray O’Donnell, 12-4.

“I looked around and I was pretty proud we were able to pull this off,” Goodale said. “I can tell you this: we need to get better as a team. I don’t think that was our best performance. Obviously it’s November, it’s early, and we’re going to be a lot better down the line and a lot better in all three areas of wrestling – top, bottom, and neutral.”

The Scarlet Knights are now 42-33-5 all-time against Princeton and have now won 21-straight matches in the series since 1993.

Rutgers returns to action next Sunday at the “Grapple at the Garden.” The Scarlet Knights are scheduled to wrestle No. 8 Cornell (12:30 p.m.) and Columbia (10:30 a.m.).

ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team put a major scare into 7th-ranked Cornell before falling 18-15 in the Bulls first dual meet of the season. The Bulls quickly jumped out to a 9-0 lead thanks to win at 125, 133 and 141, silencing the Big Red faithful at Newman Arena.

"We came out and wrestled hard," head coach John Stutzman said. "We are still a young team, but we are gaining experience. I'm excited for where we are going. Spilling 5/5 against the 7th ranked team is a testament to these guys."

True freshman Derek Spann, wrestling in his first collegiate dual, started the day off with a 7-4 decision over Noah Baughman at 125.

Bryan Lantry provided the biggest upset of the day by knocking off Mark Grey, ranked 15th in the nation, in a tight 3-2 decision at 133.

Jason Estevez (141) was back in the lineup after missing most of last season with an injury. The redshirt-junior earned a 3-2 decision thanks to riding time points.

After Cornell earned victories at the next five weight classes, James Benjamin got a win for the Bulls at 197 with a 4-3 decision over Ben Honis. Benjamin earned a reversal late in the third period to pull out the win.

Jake Gunning gained the Bulls' final points with a 5-4 decision over Craig Scott.

The Bulls will remain in Ithaca and compete at the New York State Collegiate Championships on Sunday.

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

Richards, Langenderfer Undefeated at Joe Parisi Open

Illini finishes with seven place-winners

ST. CHARLES, MO – Zane Richards (8-0) and Kyle Langenderfer (9-1) each notched individual titles at the Joe Parisi Open on Saturday, November 19 for the Fighting Illini. In total, the Illini grapplers had seven place finishes, as well as five others by unattached Illinois wrestlers.

"We saw some improvement in some areas, but have a long way to go as a team,” explained Head Coach Jim Heffernan. “A few guys had opportunities to get some big wins against very good opponents and let the matches slip away. Zane [Richards] and Kyle [Langenderfer] both looked great.”

Richards (8-0) racked up four wins on the day in route to his second individual crown in as many weeks. After winning the 133-pound bracket last Saturday at the Kaufman Brand Open, the second-ranked grappler outscored his opponents 73-23 on his path to the title, highlighted by a 21-5 domination of John Erneste (Missouri) in the final.

Also taking home top honors today was Kyle Langenderfer at 157 pounds. After receiving an opening round bye, Langenderfer pinned Dalton Moran of Oklahoma State, followed by an 18-3 technical fall of Keegan McCormick of Missouri to reach the semifinal round. Langenderfer secured his final two wins of the day with back-to-back decisions, outscoring his opponents 17-4 in the two matches. After dropping his opening match of the season, Langenderfer has reeled off nine wins in a row.

For the second week in a row, redshirt freshman Xavier Montalvo had another strong showing, placing runner-up at 174 pounds for the second straight tournament. After losing to teammate Zac Brunson in the Kufman Brand title bout, Montalvo again reached the title match with three consecutive decisions, including a 3-1, sudden victory over Jake Residori in the semifinal round. In the title bout, Montalvo dropped a 3-2 decision to Oklahoma State’s Jacobe Smith.

After opening the 174-pound bracket with an 18-0 shutout of Joe Northrup of Iowa, Zac Brunson was pinned by Jacobe Smith of Oklahoma State (6:00). Brunson quickly rebounded, earning his second pin of the season, and then followed it up with a 16-2 major decision. After grinding out a 6-4 decision to advance to the third-place match, the senior from Eugene, Oregon rolled to a 10-0 major decision in the consolation bracket final to place third overall.

After going undefeated on his way to the 184-pound crown last weekend, Emery Parker showed some resolve today as he battled back after an opening round defeat to place third. Despite dropping a tough 4-3 decision to open the day, Parker earned bonus points in three of his next four victories to wrestle back to the third-place bout where he won by a 6-4 decision.

After dropping an opening round decision, Andre Lee followed navigated his way back by way of a pin (0:58) and two decisions in next three rounds of the consolation bracket. After an 11-3 major decision in the semifinal round, Lee used a 4-3 decision in the third-place match to finish 5-1 in the tournament.

Like Parker, Brock Ervin spent most of the afternoon in the consolation round, scrapping his way back after an 11-9 loss to Jonce Blaylock of Oklahoma State in the second round. Ervin dominated the following three matches, pinning each of his opponents with an average fall time of 1:02. Ervin dropped his consolation semifinal match by fall (2:52), but rebounded to win 6-2 in the fifth-place match.

Among the 10 Illinois wrestlers competing unattached from the team today, as four true freshman wrestled back to the third-place match.

At 125 pounds, Jake Silzer and Travis Piotrowski both dropped their opening matches of the day, but fought back to set up an all-Illini third-place bout. In the consolation title match, Silzer edged out his fellow freshman, 2-1.

At 133 pounds, Dylan Duncan impressed for the second week in a row, as he advanced to the semifinal of the gold division championships bracket by way of a 16-0 technical fall and 11-2 major decision. After dropping the semifinal to John Erneste of Missouri, 5-4, Duncan used a 7-6 decision and a 19-1 technical fall to place third. Duncan has now placed in each of the first two open tournaments of the season.

Also placing in the freshman and sophomore division was Ryder Punke (fourth) at 157 pounds and Wesley Kibler (fifth) at 197 pounds.

Up next, the Illini will travel to the Northern Iowa Open on December 3 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. central time.

Four Cowboys Victorious at Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Four Oklahoma State wrestlers picked up titles Saturday at the Joe Parisi Open, hosted by Lindenwood University at Hyland Arena.

Wrestling unattached, Jacobe Smith had the highlight of the day, pinning No. 7 Zac Brunson of Illinois in the third period of the quarterfinals on his way to claiming the top spot at 174. That was the second of two falls on the day for the two-time NJCAA Champion, who went 4-0 to claim his third open title since arriving in Stillwater. Smith has been impressive since joining the Cowboys this fall, boasting a 12-0 overall record in his redshirt season with seven of those victories coming by fall.

Redshirt freshman Tristan Moran picked up his second open title of the season, going 4-0 in the 141-pound open division to come out on top. After three decisions to advance to the finals, Moran pinned Trevor Feagans of SIU-Edwardsville to clinch the top spot.

The 149-pound open bracket set up nicely for the Pokes, as Jonce Blaylock and Geordan Martinez, who was wrestling unattached, met in the finals. Martinez tallied three bonus-point wins, including a pair of falls in the first and second rounds on his way to the finals, but it was Blaylock that would come out on top in a 5-2 decision.

Derek White wrapped things up for the Cowboys, taking the 197-pound title. Boosting his overall mark to 8-2 on the season, White won four matches Saturday, dropping Chattanooga’s Scottie Boykin in a 3-2 decision in the finals.

In the freshman and sophomore Black division, unattached freshman Ethan Andersen would finish second at 285. Andersen got off to a hot start, pinning Cody Curnutt of Drury and Russell Coats of NEO in the first period of his first two matches. Andersen advanced to the finals where he fell to Demetrius Thomas of Williams Baptist College in a 13-3 major decision.

Andrew Marsden finished fifth at 184-pounds, wrestling unattached. Marsden recorded two falls and a major decision in the opening three rounds to advance to the semifinals where he would come up short to Chattanooga’s Bryce Carr in a tight, 6-3 decision. Marsden would recover in the fifth-place match, however, pinning Central Oklahoma’s John Finn early in the second period.

At 133 pounds, Lincoln Olson advanced to the semifinals where he would fall by major decision to No. 3 Zane Richards of Illinois. Olson would fall in the fifth-place match to Philip Laux of Iowa to record a sixth-place finish.

The Cowboys will return to dual action next weekend when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to take on No. 16 Minnesota on Nov. 27 at 1 p.m.

Panthers Finish Second at Keystone Classic

Junior Dom Forys Earns Third-Straight Individual Title

Pitt Results | Final Brackets

PHILADELPHIA – The Pitt wrestling team earned a runner-up finish at the 2016 Keystone Classic Sunday hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in The Palestra, while junior Dom Forys earned his third individual title.

The Panthers, who claimed the team title a year ago, finished with 121.5 behind Penn State who finished with 210 points. Pitt last earned a runner-up finish in 2008 and finished fourth in 2014 and 2013.

Sophomore TeShan Campbell earned a second place finish at 165 pounds, while sophomore LJ Bentley (125 pounds), senior Mikey Racciato (149 pounds) and redshirt freshman Taleb Rahmani (157 pounds) all placed third in their respective weight classes.

Forys, the No. 1 seed at 133 pounds and ranks No. 8 by InterMat, jumped right into the quarterfinals. He pinned Anthony Canfora of Drexel in 4:21, his first of the season. In the semifinals, Forys once again won by bonus points, this time by way of a major decision, 17-9, over Colby Smith of Appalachian State. In his final match of the day, Forys defeated Kevin Devoy of Drexel, 8-3, en route to his third Keystone Classic title.

Campbell, the No. 2 seed at 165 pounds, impressed yet again today. The Pittsburgh native posted back-to-back technical falls in the round of 16 and quarterfinal, respectively. Campbell followed those wins with a 7-4 victory over Forrest Przybysz of Appalachian State in the semifinals. In the final, Campbell faced fellow Pittsburgh native Vincenzo Joseph of Penn State and dropped a 9-5 decision.

Complete results for each Pitt wrestler can be found by clicking here.

The Panthers will take two weeks off from competition before traveling to No. 1 Oklahoma State Sunday, Dec. 4 for a 1 p.m. start time.

NU WRESTLING: Mitch Sliga Finishes Runner-Up, Northwestern 7th at
Keystone Classic

Complete Tournament Results
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Mitch Sliga earned 2nd place at 184 lbs., highlighting a 7th place finish for Northwestern in the team standings at the Keystone Classic on Sunday.

"I am proud of how we competed today," head coach Matt Storniolo said. "This was a long road trip for a young team. We made a few mistakes in critical moments, but that is not terribly surprising for how young we are. We will learn from this experience and be better for it.”

Three Northwestern wrestlers placed at the all-day tournament hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at The Palestra. Jacob Berkowitz (3rd at 197) and Johnny Sebastian (6th at 174) joined Sliga on the podium.
Sliga came into the day as the No. 3 overall seed at his weight and dominated his way to the championship match. He started the tournament with a first-period fall over Chris Beck from VMI and followed that up with an 8-1 decision over Appalachian State's David Peters-Logue in the quarterfinals. Sliga then advanced to the finals with a 6-0 shutout of Alex DeCiantis from Drexel in the semifinals. No. 3 ranked Bo Nickal won the championship bout with a pin in the closing seconds.

"It was great to see Mitch back in the finals of a tournament," Storniolo said. "He is wrestling better every time he steps on the mat. It is great to see him enjoying himself.”
Berkowitz secured a third place finish with a team high four wins on the day. He won his first two matches with a pair of decisions but then ran into No. 14 Matt McCutcheon of Penn State in the semifinals, losing 7-1. Berkowitz then won two matches in the consolations, including an 8-3 win over Joe Heyob of Penn in the third-place bout.

Sebastian looked good in his first varsity tournament, advancing to the semifinals before his first loss of the season. He won his first round match by fall in just 39 seconds and then earned a 20-5 tech fall in the Round of 16. He won his quarterfinal match with another pin, this time in 3:39. Sebastian dropped a 7-2 decision to Penn State's Shakur Rasheed in the semis and then withdrew from the event, which gave him the sixth-place finish.

A number of Wildcats narrowly missed placing, as the Keystone Classic only awarded team points through sixth place. Freshmen Anthony Rubinetti, Alec McKenna and Shayne Oster, sophomore Conan Jennings and senior Ben Sullivan all would have had a chance to wrestle for seventh if that match was in effect on Sunday with all five advancing to and then falling in the consolation round of four. The true freshman Oster was the closest to advancing to the consolation semis, losing a 9-7 decision to Nick Barber of Eastern Michigan.
Rubinetti (125), McKenna (141) and Oster (149) all made it to the quarterfinals at their respective weight classes before dropping matches to higher-seeded wrestlers and then competing in the consolation bracket.

10 Wildcats won matches on Sunday with eight winning multiple. McKenna, Sebastian and Sliga each led the team with three victories apiece.

On the same day, a pair of Northwestern true freshman redshirts impressed at the Michigan State Open. Sebastian Rivera finished second at 125 lbs., dropping the championship match in a close 7-5 decision. He earned his spot in the finals with a tech fall and a major decision in the earlier rounds. Classmate Ryan Deakin placed third at 149 lbs. He lost in the quarterfinals but bounced back to win four in a row in the consolation bracket to earn his third place finish.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is back to the dual part of the schedule when North Dakota State pays a visit to Welsh-Ryan Arena on Dec. 2. That match will begin at 7 p.m.

Goodwin, Bannister Win Twice at Cavalier Duals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Redshirt junior Tyler Goodwin and redshirt sophomore Alfred Bannister both keep their unbeaten streaks alive Sunday, as the duo finished unbeaten at the Cavalier Duals hosted by the University of Virgina. The pair won both of their matches against wrestlers from Lock Haven and Virginia at Memorial Gymnasium, on a day which saw several Terps wrestle in their first career dual.

Maryland dropped the team decision in both matches, moving to 0-2 on the season in head-to-head competition. Virginia (2-0) upended Lock Haven (1-1) 24-16 in the meet’s other match. The Terps will resume competition next Sunday, November 27 at the Grapple at the Garden in New York City.

Match #1 -- Maryland 18, Lock Haven 20

Tyler Goodwin and redshirt freshman Danny Boychuck both notched falls, but Lock Haven won the final four bouts to secure the dual match victory 20-18 in Maryland’s season opener. Five Terps made their collegiate dual match debuts against the Bald Eagles, including Boychuck (10-3) who pinned Kyle Hammond for his sixth bonus point victory of the season.

Boychuck went into another gear leading 3-2 with a minute to go, taking Lock Haven’s Kyle Hammond down and putting him on his back at 6:31. It was the Haddonfield, N.J. native’s third pin of the season and put the Terps ahead 15-7.

Goodwin took care of Lewis Williams in the first period of the 133-pound match, racking up early back points until getting the fall at 1:45. Bannister won his first career dual at 149 pounds, earning a 9-7 decision over Kyle Shoop. Redshirt sophomore Patrick Gerish nearly had Jared Siegrist pinned in the 165-pound match, tilting the Lock Haven grappler in the first period to go up early. Siegrist managed to hang on and make it close in the third period, but Gerish outlasted him for the 8-6 decision.

The upper weights proved to be the difference in the match, as Lock Haven edged the Terps to win their first match of the year, before ultimately finishing 1-1 on the day.

Match #2 -- Maryland 13, Virginia 22

Maryland picked up four wins, but Virginia used to four-match win streak in the middle and upper weights to outlast Maryland 22-13 in Sunday’s Cavalier Duals finale. 12th-ranked Tyler Goodwin again shined for the Terps, securing his second bonus point victory of the day with an 8-0 major decision over Will Mason.

17th-ranked Alfred Bannister wrested one of the more exciting matches on the day in the 149-pound contest, as the La Plata, Md. native and UVA redshirt freshman Sam Krivus needed overtime to settle on a winner. Neither wrestle would surrender a takedown, as the match turned to ride-outs after a 1-1 tie through sudden victory.

It appeared Krivus had found a way out in the firt 30-second period, but Bannister held on to a leg in the final seconds to deny the escape. Baby J then took care of business from the down position, getting the escape for a one-point tiebreaker win.

Maryland’s upper weights also sealed a couple close matches, starting with a come-from-behind win for David-Brian Whisler in the 197-pound bout. Whisler trailed for most of the match, before executing a double overhook throw to put Chance McClure on his back for a quick takedown-near fall combo. The six point move made the difference, as the Warren, Ohio native picked up his first career dual win for the Terps.

Youssif Hemida was the second Terp to go to extra time, picking up his first dual win of the season with a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Chuck Boddy. After trading escapes in the second and third, Hemida fended off takedown attempts from the Cavalier heavyweight before getting the match clincher in sudden victory.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Wrestling in a hostile environment for the second time in three days, the No. 6 Virginia Tech wrestling team could not come away with another victory as the Hokies (4-1, 0-0 ACC) fell to No. 5 Missouri, 23-19, in front of 1,472 at Jess Audi! torium on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers (2-0, 0-0 MAC) improve to 2-0 all-time against Hokies after the second-ever meeting between the two programs. Senior Ty Walz picked up his second major decision of the weekend at heavyweight and junior Zach Epperly registered his first fall of the season at 174 pounds.

Dance put the Hokies ahead 3-0 early with a methodical 8-4 decision over Aaron Assad at 125 but the Tigers went on to take the next five bouts to take a commanding 19-3 advantage.

One of those wins for Mizzou came at 149, a top 10 showdown between No. 4 Lavion Mayes and No. 6 Chishko. The score was tied at 2-2 entering the third but an escape, a takedown and riding time iced the match for Mayes with a 6-2 decision.

With the Hokies trailing 20-3 with four bouts remaining, Epperly recorded a huge fall in 4:51 that brought the dual score to 20-9. Junior Zack Zavatsky against No. 11 Willie Milkus followed at 184 but an injury default gave Zavatsky and the Hokies six point to cut the deficit to five, 20-15.

That set the stage for the bout at 197 between No. 3 Jared Haught and No. 1 J’Den Cox, a bronze medal recipient at the Rio Olympics this past summer. Haught fought valiantly but an escape and riding time gave Cox a narrow 2-0 decision, putting the match out of reach at 23-15.

PHILADELPHIA – The Broncs competed at the 22nd Keystone Classic Sunday. Freshman Evan Fidelibus (Easton, PA/Easton Area) and junior Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) each finished third in the 141 and 165 weight classes, respectively. Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) finished fourth at 184, while Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) took fifth at 174.

“The tournament was very tough with the defending national champions [Penn State] and a lot of other tough teams as well,” said Head Coach Gary Taylor. “We were without BJ Clagon at 157 and without (Ryan) Wolfe at 197, so we weren’t full strength. It was a good learning tournament this year. At this tournament you’re going to have to be at full strength. We worked and chipped away and finished sixth. I wasn’t unhappy with the results. I think we learned a lot.”

Fidelibus pinned Robert Lee of Pittsburgh in 2:58 to take the third place finish. He also defeated Penn State’s Dom Giannangeli, 7-5, in overtime, pinned Northwestern’s Alec McKenna in 1:34, defeated Harvard’s AJ Jaffe, 13-5, pinned VMI’s Steve Midkiff in 30 seconds and defeated Drexel’s David Pearce, 9-4, with riding time.

“One of the highlights of the tournament was Evan Fidelibus, a true freshman out of Easton,” said Taylor. “He lost his first match and then won six in a row. I think this was a growing-up tournament and coming of age for him he showed how good he could be.”

Walsh received a forfeit from Drexel’s Austin Rose to claim third place at 165. Walsh previously earned wins over Franklin & Marshall’s Rob King (4:40), Penn State’s Joseph Velliquette (0:54) and Harvard’s Peter Bearse (2:18).

“Chad continued to wrestle well,” said Taylor “He over-wrestled a situation too much and he was out most of the week, so his timing wasn’t as strong. But I’m not concerned about it. Chad will go right back to work, and the kid who beat him was good as well.”

Competing at 184, Fagg-Daves battled Drexel’s Alex DeCiantis into overtime in the third-place match before falling, 5-3. He also defeated Franklin & Marshall’s Anthony Mancini, 3-2, pinned Appalachian State’s David Peters-Logue in 2:15 and defeated Sacred Heart’s Elliot Antler, 4-3.

Stinson took fifth place at 174, receiving a forfeit from Northwestern’s Johnny Sebastian. Earlier in the day, Stinson defeated Drexel’s Owen Brooks, 7-2, with riding time and Franklin & Marshall’s James Stillerman, 16-6, with riding time.

“I thought Wayne Stinson wrestled well at 174 and we had several other young kids who won some matches,” said Taylor.

Gino Fluri and Jesse Rodgers also picked up a pair of wins each at 149. Fluri defeated Franklin & Marshall’s Sam Butler, 3-1, and Sacred Heart’s Alex Harnsberger, 11-6. Rodgers earned an 8-2 victory over Appalachian State’s Miller Clark and battled to a 4-3 win in overtime over Pittsburgh’s Alex Murray.

Also earning one win apiece were Anthony Cefolo and Mauro Correnti at 133 and 285, respectively. Cefolo defeated Eastern Michigan’s Sa’Derian Perry, 6-5, while Correnti took a 10-2 win with riding time over Sacred Heart’s John Hartnett.

Jacobe Smith Named Big 12 Co-Wrestler of the Week

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State junior wrestler Jacobe Smith has been named Big 12 Co-Wrestler of the Week for his efforts at Saturday’s Lindenwood Joe Parisi Open.

Wrestling unattached, Jacobe Smith had the highlight of the day, pinning No. 7 Zac Brunson of Illinois in the third period of the quarterfinals on his way to claiming the top spot at 174. That was the second of two falls on the day for the Muskogee, Okla., native, who went 4-0 to claim his third open title since arriving in Stillwater.

Smith has been impressive since joining the Cowboys this fall, boasting a 12-0 overall record in his redshirt season with seven of those victories coming by fall and another by technical fall.

A two-time NJCAA Champion at 174 pounds, Smith racked up a 76-6 overall record in his two seasons at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

The top-ranked Cowboys head back on the road this weekend when they travel to Minneapolis to take on No. 16 Minnesota on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT.

KENT, Ohio – Multiple wins by seven different Buckeyes helped Ohio State pick up a pair of dual victories on Tuesday evening in the first Thanksgiving Throwdown, hosted at Kent State’s Memorial and Athletic Convention Center. The Buckeyes, ranked fourth in this week’s USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll, improved to 3-0 on the season.

Reigning Big Ten Wrestler of the Week Kyle Snyder followed up his victory last Saturday over fourth-ranked Tanner Hall of Arizona State with two pins on Tuesday in a combined 3:46. It was just the second and third career falls for Snyder, who has now won 14 straight matches dating back to last January and improved his career record to 43-4.

Fellow defending national champion Myles Martin improved to 6-0 on the young season with his third and fourth bonus point wins. He pinned Kent State’s Jerold Spohn in 2:08 and then turned around to tech fall Nick Corba, 24-9. Against Cobra, Martin scored eight takedowns.

Micah Jordan, who came into Tuesday’s duals as the team leader in wins (nine), bonus point wins (seven) and technical falls (four) added to all three of those categories. Jordan scored a total of 44 points and won each of his bouts via technical fall. Jordan was a 26-6 winner over Tim Rooney of Kent State and followed that up with an 18-3 victory against Nick Montgomery of Cleveland State.

Jose Rodriguez built off the momentum of last Saturday’s 13-0 major decision at 125 lbs. by getting a technical fall and fall tonight. Rodriguez shutout Beard Seth of Kent State, 16-0, and needed just 1:26 to pin Spencer Dusi of Cleveland State. The redshirt freshman from Massillon, Ohio is now 5-1 on the season.

Kollin Moore improved to 10-0 on the year with two bonus point wins – a 21-4 technical fall against Stephen Suglio of Kent State a pin in 1:22 over Kollin Kelly of Cleveland State. Moore’s pin vs. Kelly was one of six against the Vikings on the night.

Ke-Shawn Hayes was the first Buckeye to win on the night, picking up a 7-3 decision over Cleveland State’s Evan Cheek. After finishing the first period with a 2-1 lead, Hayes escaped to start the second and then scored a takedown and two-point near fall for all the points he needed. In his second match of the night, Hayes picked up his first fall of the year.

The seventh Buckeye win two wins on the night was Cody Burcher, who edged Isaac Best of Kent State 5-2 to close out the 36-13 win over the Golden Flashes and pinned John Vaughn of Cleveland State two minutes into the first period.

In all, Ohio State won 17 of 20 matches and had nine falls, five technical falls and one major decision. The Buckeyes are now off until the CKLV Las Vegas Invite Dec. 2-3 in Las Vegas, Nev.

NEW YORK – The University at Buffalo wrestling team split a pair of duals at the Grapple at the Garden on Sunday. The Bulls defeated George Mason, 32-9, before losing to Princeton, 28-12, at the famed Madison Square Garden.

Against George Mason in the opener, the Bulls got off to a great start as Derek Spann and Bryan Lantry pinned their respective opponents to put the Bulls ahead, 12-0. Spann pinned Trevor Mello at the 5:42 mark for his first career pin in a dual. Lantry pinned his opponent, Lio Quezada, at the 6:10 mark.

After the Patriots won the next three duals in decisions, Derek Holcomb got the Bulls back on track with a 5-2 decision over Garrett Tingen in the 157 match. It was Holcomb's first career dual win.

Muhamed McBryde followed with a 5-3 decision over Patrick Davis at 174. Brett Perry earned his first career pin in dual action and UB's third of the day when he took down Eli Spencer at the 4:46 mark.

Nate Rose got the start at 197 and totally dominated Andrew Thomas, earning a 15-0 tech fall. Jake Gunning finished off the Patriots with a 6-3 decision over Matthew Voss.

In their second dual of the day, the Bulls went up against #19 Princeton. Despite some impressive individual performances, UB lost to the Tigers, 28-12.

James Benjamin (197) had UB's biggest win of the day, earning a 7-5 overtime decision over Brett Harner, an All-American and 4th-ranked wrestler in the nation.

Lantry won his second match of the day by earning a 4-1 decision over Pat D'arcy. Lantry stayed perfect on the season, improving to 5-0.

Gunning earned a forfeit win at 285 for his second victory of the day. Like Lantry, Gunning is undefeated on the season at 5-0.

"We had mixed results today," head coach John Stutzman said. "We beat a good George Mason team and lost to nationally-ranked Princeton. Overall, Bryan Lantry wrestled well, going 2-0. His hard work is really paying off. James Benjamin is wrestling very well and was able to beat the 4th-ranked guy in the country."

The Bulls will next compete at Ohio next Sunday.

Hawkeyes Open Big Ten Season with 34-3 win at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana -- The University of Iowa wrestling team opened the Big Ten season with a 34-3 win at Purdue on Sunday afternoon. The Hawkeyes won nine-of-10 bouts and scored 59 takedowns to win their Big Ten opener for the 19th straight season.

“There were a lot of good things,” said UI head coach Tom Brands. “They were a team that came out to squeeze. You could tell right away they wanted to keep it close. They were on our wrists, squeezing us tight. We did a pretty good job overall.”

The Hawkeyes won the first nine bouts and outscored the Boilermakers 138-59 overall. Iowa won four matches by decision, three by major decision, and two by technical fall. Alex Meyer recorded one of the two technical falls, 25-10, finishing the third period with seven takedowns and scoring a career-high 25 match points.

“It’s fun to put points on the board,” Meyer said. “I was feeling good before the match, during the match, at the end of the match, and after the match. I was moving really well and that leads to me scoring points.”

“Give credit to Meyer,” Brands said. “He didn’t just get the major and stop wrestling. He got the major, kept building, and with seven seconds to go he gets the technical fall and we get another team point. That’s a big deal.”

Thomas Gilman, Topher Carton, Brandon Sorensen, and Sammy Brooks scored bonus points for Iowa. Gilman opened the dual at 125 with six first-period takedowns and earned his first technical fall of the season, 25-10. He improved to 6-0 on the season. He is yet to wrestle a full length match, winning his first five bouts of the season by fall.

Carton surrendered a takedown in the opening minute at 141, but scored the final eight takedowns, three in the final period, and added 2:26 of riding time to win by major decision, 19-8.

Sorensen led 5-2 after two periods before scoring five takedowns in the final frame to record his fourth major decision of the season, 17-6, at 149.

Brooks recorded eight takedowns and 2:40 of riding time to win 20-9 at 184.

Cory Clark improved to 7-0 on the season with a 6-0 decision at 133. Michael Kemerer was one of four Hawkeyes to make their Big Ten debuts. He scored the first of four takedowns 37 seconds into the match and added 1:03 of riding time to win, 10-3, at 157.

Joey Gunther (165) and Cash Wilcke (197) also picked up wins in their debut. Wilcke scored his third takedown of the match with two seconds on the clock to win 6-4 at 197, and Gunther outscored his opponent 6-2 in the third period to win 8-4 at 165.

“It was nice to get a Big Ten match under my belt,” Gunther said. “I just kept bringing the pace higher and higher and getting to my attacks. They were coming easier and easier as the match was going on.”

Purdue closed the dual with a 4-2 win at 285. Steven Holloway scored the bout’s only takedown, but gave up a penalty point, two escapes, and riding time.

“I like the test that we had in some matches,” Brands said. “We definitely have to get better at 97 and heavyweight in bottom position. We don’t want to dwell on that. Both matches were winnable. Wilcke overcame getting ridden out (second period) and Holloway can overcome that. The easiest way to overcome it is just get off the bottom.”

Iowa returns to the mat Friday, Dec. 2 wrestling South Dakota State in Brookings, South Dakota. The dual begins at 7:30 p.m. (CT) and will be broadcast on KXIC AM 800 and online at Hawkeye All-Access. The dual is streamed online at flowrestling.com and televised on the Midco Sports Network.

NOTES: Attendance was 944... Iowa held a 59-2 advantage in takedowns and scored 28 takedowns in the third period… Iowa has won 22 consecutive Big Ten duals… Iowa has won 19 straight conference openers… Iowa has won 29 consecutive duals against Purdue… Redshirt freshmen Michael Kemerer, Joey Gunther, Cash Wilcke, and Steven Holloway made their Big Ten debuts… Brandon Sorensen (18-0) and Alex Meyer (14-0) are undefeated in Big Ten duals.

BOONE, N.C. --- Ethan Ramos won by technical fall, and Joey Ward and Danny Chaid each had major decisions, but No. 25 North Carolina dropped a tight dual at No. 23 Appalachian State 18-16 Sunday afternoon at Varisty Gym. James Szymanski was also a winner for the Tar Heels, who could not overcoming losing six of 10 bouts to drop to 1-1 on the dual season.

Szymanski got the day started for Carolina with an impressive 8-4 win over Vito Pasone at 125 pounds. Colby Smith tied the dual with a 5-0 win over Tyrone Klump at 133 before Ward took the mat against ASU's Irvin Enriquez. Ward was in control throughout and put the Tar Heels back in front with a 12-3 major decision, his fourth bonus-point win of the year.

Appalachian State (3-0) took its first lead of the day with decisions in each of the next three bouts. Gavin Londoff upset No. 16 Joey Moon 5-2 at 157 before No. 17 Forrest Przybysz blanked Jack Clark 5-0 at 165.

Ramos then lifted Carolina back even with the Mountaineers courtesy of his first technical fall of the year. The junior All-American dominated Marcus Johnson in a 20-5 third period tech fall to even the dual at 12.

ASU briefly retook the lead thanks to a 3-2 overtime win at 184, but Chaid's first major as a Tar Heel put UNC up 16-15 with one bout to go.

No. 9 Denzel Dejournette gave Appalachian State the team victory, besting Cory Daniel at 285 by an 8-2 decision.

Top-Ranked Cowboys Bury Gophers, 34-3

Interview with heavyweight Austin Schafer:

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The top-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team handled its first ranked opponent of the season in dominating fashion Sunday afternoon, dropping No. 16 Minnesota, 34-3, at the Minnesota Sports Pavilion to move to 2-0 on the dual season.

Heavyweight Austin Schafer had the biggest highlight of the day, upsetting No. 5 Michael Kroells for the first ranked win of his career with a thrilling 3-2 decision that was decided in the final 30 seconds. Adding to Schafer’s big win, four Cowboys recorded bonus point victories to put the Gophers away, including a first-period fall by Chandler Rogers at 165 pounds.

“Overall, I’m pleased,” head coach John Smith said after the match. “You obviously have some matches that you kind of scratch your head at. I don’t think any of our guys really felt like they were in any kind of rhythm today, but that’s okay. It’s tough to get in that rhythm.”

Following up Preston Weigel’s loss to No. 2 Brett Pfarr at 197 pounds after halftime to cut the Cowboy lead to 18-3, Schafer killed whatever momentum the Gophers had. Tied at one with under a minute to go in the final period, the senior made his move. Schafer’s decisive takedown came with 30 seconds on the clock, and while Kroells would escape for a final effort, the Cowboy heavyweight held on for the 3-2 decision.

“The score was tight, but I felt confident,” Schafer said. “He hadn’t been opening up on his feet and I just knew to stay in good position and that I’d find my shot. I just stayed confident and kept pursuing that.”

Starting the match at 149, third-ranked Anthony Collica recorded a 6-4 decision with riding time over Fredy Stroker of Minnesota in his first true match of the season. Collica sat the Cowboys’ opening dual out after defeating third-ranked Lavion Mayes in the All-Star Classic the previous day, but the match didn’t count toward his NCAA record.

Jonce Blaylock kept things rolling, moving up to 157 to fill in for third-ranked Joseph Smith against Minnesota’s Carson Brolsma. Trailing 4-3 in the third period, Blaylock dropped Brolsma for a takedown in the final 30 seconds of the match to gut out a 5-4 decision.

Rogers recorded the first bonus point win for the Cowboys Sunday afternoon, pinning Minnesota’s Brandon Kingsley nearly a minute and a half into the match. It marked Rogers’ second pin of the season and the second-quickest of his career, moving him to 5-0 overall for his redshirt sophomore campaign.

Seniors Kyle Crutchmer and Nolan Boyd both recorded decisions to give the Cowboys an 18-0 lead at the intermission. Crutchmer survived a late push from No. 14 Nick Wanzek to get the 7-5 win. Boyd got out with a 2-1 decision over Robert Steveson.

After Schafer’s match put the win well in hand, redshirt freshmen Nick Piccininni and Kaid Brock, along with top-ranked Dean Heil buried the Gophers with bonus-point wins in their matches.

Piccininni was relentless in his match against Skyler Petry at 125 pounds, piling up points to get the 17-1 tech fall. The East Setaucket, N.Y., product moved to 6-0 on the season, and boosted his dual point total to 10 after tech falls in both of the first two dual matches of his career.

Brock came out of the gate hot, dropping Minnesota’s Mitch McKee in under 10 seconds. Leading 3-2 after one, Brock pulled away in the second with the help of a four-point nearfall. The Stillwater native would finish off the match with a 10-2 major decision.

“With Kaid, although (McKee) was a freshman, he’s one of the better guys in the country,” Smith said. “He was actually higher ranked than Kaid coming out of high school. We knew collegiately, this was a chance to get that monkey off of his back. He hasn’t beaten that kid at least the last two times they’ve wrestled. It was a good effort.”

Dean Heil closed out the match with a 12-3 major decision over Gannon Volk to move to 6-0 on the season. The 2016 NCAA Champion was dominant throughout, recording five takedowns to pick up the riding time point easily with just over four minutes on top.

The Cowboys now look ahead to next weekend, which will take them to Norman, Okla., for a Bedlam battle with No. 17 Oklahoma on Friday night before heading home for a matchup with No. 21 Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon.

ODU (0-3 / 0-2 MAC) vs. #22 UNI (3-1 / 1-0 MAC) – West Gym / Nov. 27, 2016

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI earned bonus points in three matches and knocked off two top-15 opponents to beat Old Dominion 29-9 in its first MAC dual of the season.

UNI improves to 3-1 overall, 1-0 in the MAC. They remain perfect against ODU, 8-0.

“We finished positions. We finished periods, and that’s probably what I am most happy about” said head coach Doug Schwab. “We talked about that after the Virginia Tech meet how we are going to respond.”

Drew Foster knocked off All-American and three-time NCAA qualifier No. 9 Jack Dechow at 184 pounds, and Bryce Steiert beat No. 14 Seldon Wright at 165 pounds.

“That was a pretty dominating performance,” Schwab said of Foster. “The guy never really got close to him, and he rode him out the whole second period.”

Foster gave partial credit to the crowd.

“They give you a lot of energy, and they got to drain energy out of the opponent,” he said. “I’d hate to wrestle against the crowd. It’s nice to have the crowd backing you up.”

The Panthers kept ODU off the board until the 197-pound match.

Dylan Peters got UNI on the board and moved up on the all-time career list for falls with a first-period fall against Steven Simpson at 125 pounds. No. 3 Peters now has 25 first-period falls and 37 total to tie Moza Fay for the fifth most falls among all Panthers.

Josh Alber improved to 8-1, with all eight wins coming with bonus points. His 11-2 major decision gave the Panthers a 10-0 lead over the Monarchs.

Jake Hodges kept the Panthers perfect racking up nearly two minutes of riding time to win 6-0 at 141 pounds. Max Thomsen improved to 7-1 with his fifth set of bonus points, beating Michael Hayes by major decision, 11-3.

The Panthers were perfect right up until intermission. Paden Moore closed out the first half of the meet with an 8-2 win over Austin Eads.

Steiert, ranked at 157 pounds, knocked off No. 14 Seldon Wright wrestling at 165 pounds. Steiert held off a last-minute attempt at a takedown to win 3-2.

Taylor Lujan kept the Panthers perfect with a 10-5 decision, earning 1 minute, 50 seconds in riding time at 174 pounds.

Foster racked up nearly three minutes of riding time to knock off Dechow at 184 pounds. The Panthers led 29-0 after eight matches.

ODU wouldn’t get on the board until the 197-pound match. UNI forfeited the final weight but won 29-9.

DEKALB, Ill. -- In the premier matchup of the night, Old Dominion's ninth-ranked Kevin Beazley scored a third period takedown to defeat Northern Illinois' 10th-ranked Shawn Soott, 3-2, at 197 to lift the Monarchs over the Huskies, 22-9, for their first dual meet victory of the season Tuesday night. ODU improved to 1-3, 1-1 (MAC) while Northern Illinois fell to 2-2, 0-1 (MAC).

After the Huskies' Brock Hudkins defeated Steven Simpson, 4-3, at 125, the Monarchs secured back-to-back decision victories from Alex Madrigal and Emilio Saavedra at 133 and 141, respectively, to put ODU out in front, 6-3.

Northern Illinois responded with a 9-3 decision win from 12th-ranked Steve Bleise at 149 and a 6-0 victory by Caden McWhirter at 157 to reclaim the lead, 9-6, at the intermission.

Old Dominion would never look back from there, as the Monarchs rolled to five straight wins from 165 to 285. Seldon Wright earned a 17-8 major decision at 165, while freshman Antonio Agee picked up the first dual meet win of his career, securing a late third period takedown to knock off Shaun'Qae McMurtry, 3-1, at 174.

Jack Dechow kept the momentum rolling for Old Dominion, registering a controlling 6-1 win at 184 over Bryce Gorman. At 197, with the battle of top 10 wresters deadlocked at 1-1 in the final 30 seconds, Kevin Beazley secured both ankles of Shawn Scott for a takedown to go up, 3-1. A quick escape by Scott narrowed the lead to 3-2, but Beazley held on for the 3-2 triumph to improve to 8-1 on the season. http://www.odusports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?&ATCLID=208408989&DB_OEM_ID=31100

To close out the dual meet, Will Hilliard scored a takedown and four nearfall to jump out to a 7-2 first period lead over Caleb Gossett and hung on for the 12-7 win to clinch the dual meet for the Monarchs.

The Big 12 vs. Pac-12 showdown is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at BSU's Bronco Gym.UVU (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) will enter Saturday's dual meet off of a 19th place finish out of 35 teams with a total of 28.5 points at the CKLV Invite last weekend in Las Vegas. With the top-20 finish, Utah Valley finished ahead of fellow Big 12 opponents Air Force (21st) and West Virginia (28th), as well as Pac-12 foes Cal Poly (24th) and Boise State (30th).Redshirt freshmenKimball Bastian(174 pounds) andTanner Orndorff(197) led the way for the Wolverines last weekend by both placing in the top-eight at the prestigious event. Bastian went 4-2 at the tournament en route to earning a seventh-place finish, while Orndorff finished with a 3-3 ledger and an eighth-place showing. The two placewinners at the CKLV Invitational marked UVU's first since the 2013-14 season, and also matched a program best from the 2009-10 campaign when All-American Benjamin Kjar (125) took seventh and Flint Ray placed eighth (133).Fellow WolverineWill Sumneralso had a strong showing for Utah Valley last week, as he too advanced to the tournament's second day of action and finished his 2016 CKLV Invite run just one win shy of placing. The sophomore 184-pounder went 2-2 at his inaugural Las Vegas Invitational appearance with a pair of dual victories, which included one over Boise State's Kaydn Del Toro (4-1). Sumner, Bastian and Orndorff all won their first two respective matches last week to reach the tournament's quarterfinal round. The three Wolverines in the quarterfinals marked a program high for UVU.BASTIAN ENTERS RANKINGS FOR FIRST TIMEWith his seventh-place finish and his 4-2 outing, Bastian entered the top-20 national rankings for the first time in his career this week, as he'll enter Saturday's dual ranked 20th by FloWrestling at 174 pounds. With his four victories, Bastian now holds a team-best 12-6 record on the season.UVU IN DUAL ACTIONUtah Valley will enter Saturday's contest with a 1-1 dual record after splitting a pair of matches against Nebraska-Kearney (35-6) and No. 23 Northern Iowa (12-24) at the UNI Duals on Nov. 11 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. UVU won nine of the 10 bouts against the Division II power UNK Lopers before dropping seven of the 10 to the nationally ranked Panthers on their home mat.Mitch Brown(125),Koy Wilkinson(165) and Orndorff (197) led the way for UVU that day by each winning both of their dual matches.ABOUT THE OPPOSITIONBoise State will enter Saturday's matchup with an 0-1 dual record (0-0 Pac-12) after dropping a tightly contested 20-17 decision to Purdue on Nov. 18 in Palo Alto, California. The Broncos won four of the six matches on the night to finish just short of defeating the Big Ten Boilermakers. BSU also recently finished 30th out of 35 teams at the 2016 CKLV Invite with 13.5 total points and went 3-9 a season ago and 1-4 in Pac-12 action.Senior 174-pounder Austin Dewey paces the Broncos on the season with an 11-5 record while redshirt freshman 165-pounder Demetrius Romero holds a 10-4 clip. COLUMBUS, Ohio – Five bonus points wins – including a dual-ending pin by Olympic champion Kyle Snyder in his first appearance at St. John Arena since winning gold last August – punctuated fourth-ranked Ohio State’s convincing 30-9 triumph over No. 5 Missouri in front of nearly 3,000 fans on Thursday evening.

THE SHORT STORY
The Buckeyes were bolstered by wins in seven of 10 matches, starting with redshirt freshman Jose Rodriguez’s 3-1 decision at 125 to open the dual and ending with Snyder’s pin of Austin Myers in 4:32. In between, fans were treated to victories from true freshman Luke Pletcher, redshirt sophomore Micah Jordan, redshirt juniors Nathan Tomasello and Bo Jordan and sophomore Myles Martin.

RODRIGUEZ’S HOME DEBUT
At 9-2, Rodriguez was coming off the biggest performance of his rookie season – a runner-up showing last weekend at the CKLV Invitational. His match-up with Missouri’s Aaron Assad was ultimately decided on a first period takedown with just 38 seconds remaining in the period. The only points that were scored the rest of the way were escapes. Rodriguez, ranked No. 10 nationally, improves to 10-2.

TOMASELLO’S MAJOR MAKES IT 7-0
In one of the premier match-ups coming into the dual, Tomasello made his St. John Arena debut at 133 pounds and looked as strong as ever, taking control of the match and ninth-ranked Jaydin Eierman in the second period with a takedown and four-point near fall to go ahead 8-0.

PLETCHER MOVES TO 9-0
In his first appearance in the varsity lineup, Pletcher used timely takedowns at the end of the first and second periods and strong third period defense to register a 6-4 decision over Zach Synon. Pletcher improves to 9-0 on the year (he won his previous eight matches in open tournaments wrestling at 133 lbs.) and his win gave Ohio State a 10-0 lead.

JORDAN BROTHERS EARN BONUS POINTS
M. Jordan (18-0) came into Thursday night’s dual leading the Buckeyes in nearly every offensive category, including takedowns and total points scored. He added to both of those in a big way, taking down Alex Butler eight times while also adding a four-point near fall in his 23-7 technical fall. His older brother Bo wrestled in his first varsity match of the season and looked to be in midseason form, scoring third takedowns in the second and two more in the third for a 14-6 major decision.

MARTIN WINS EASY, MOORE PUSHES COX
Martin rolled up 16 first-period points on Matthew Lemanowicz at 184 lbs. and finished off his technical fall with a four-point near fall early in the second period, setting the stage for one of the most entertaining matches of the night. Sixth-ranked Moore gave No. 1 J’den Cox, the defending national champion and reigning bronze medalist, all he could handle at 197 lbs. Moore took Cox down twice in the third period to pull to within one, 5-4, but can out of time to score the tying takedown (Cox added a point of riding time).

SNYDER FINISHES IT OFF
Snyder, competing in Columbus for the first time since making history at the Rio Olympic Games last August, took Missouri’s Austin Myers down four times in the first period and four more times in the second before closing it out with a fall at the 4:32 mark of the match. It was Snyder’s fourth pin of the season (he had one in his first two seasons combined).

WHAT’S NEXT
The Buckeyes return to action next Sunday, Dec. 18, when they take on Northwestern at Wadsworth High School. The dual is slated to begin at noon.

POSTMATCH QUOTES
Head coach Tom Ryan

On what he told the team before the match
“Well I think the most important thing for our team tonight was to continue to find value in scoring points. I think what we’re seeing with this team is a good combination of leadership and some of the younger guys. Overall, it was a good performance from us.”

On Cody Burcher
“I think what we need to continue to see from Cody is that he is not satisfied with close loses. Close loses and wins are worlds apart. He’s definitely made some great gains though. We want to see his philosophy of attacking no matter the score to continue.”

Junior Kyle Snyder

On balancing his international and collegiate schedule
“I rely on people I know that care about me to help me out. I can’t do it myself, that would be too hard. I have great coaches and friends and family that help me and are really supportive. At the same time, I love what I am doing and wouldn’t want it any other way.”

On wrestling at St. John Arena
“People wouldn’t think I would get nervous wrestling here, but I do still get a little nervous. I care about what I am doing and I want to do well. The comparison is pretty hard to say but I do always get excited to wrestle here.”

Rs.-Junior Nathan Tomasello

On the start of his season“Patience has been very important for me thus far. I dealt with an injury that made it hard to train the way I wanted to this summer. But I have gotten a lot of support from the training staff to make it to this point to come back better than I was before.”

On wrestling up a weight class
“I feel like I have more energy and more strength. I don’t have to worry about my weight too much anymore or the stress of weight management. So I have just been able to come out firing and attack.”

December 8, 2016

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers brace for a massive upcoming weekend, featuring the Hoosiers' home opener, their first Big Ten dual of the season, and another tough tri dual slate at Eastern Michigan. First, Indiana will host the No. 16 Wisconsin Badgers, who boast six grapplers ranked in the top 20 including #3 Isaac Jordan (165) and #2 Connor Medbery (285). Hoosier senior #7 Nate Jackson (184) looks to remain unbeaten after a 10-0 start, while Cole Weaver (141), Devin Skatzka (174), and Jake Hinz (197) look to test their mettle against ranked competition.

Sunday morning's tri dual in Ypsilanti, IU's third of the year, will provide exciting matchups between #18 Elijah Oliver (IU) and #25 Noah Gonser (EMU) at 125 lbs., Weaver and IU transfer #24 Kyle Springer (EMU) at 141 lbs., and a thrilling rematch between IU's Luke Blanton (149) and Eastern Michigan's Nick Barber. Jackson will face another ranked wrestler, #23 Nick Corba, when IU meets Cleveland State.

Hoosier Notes:

Sweep at SIUE
Indiana returns home after a successful tri dual last weekend at SIU-Edwardsville, extending their dual win streak to three meets. The Hoosiers broke a 17-17 tie to edge North Dakota State before taking down the Cougars, 21-16, on the final bout of the meet.

Nate Jackson (10-0) continued his win streak with a major decision and his fifth win by fall, while Cole Weaver (3-3) earned his first dual wins of the year, giving IU the team score lead with both of his decisions.

Numbers on the Boards
Indiana's nationally ranked duo of Nate Jackson (184) and Elijah Oliver (125) are a combined 17-1 after their first three weekends of competition. Jackson is currently ranked 6th (Flo) after an unbeaten start; Oliver climbs to 13th (Flo) after an inactive week, but rose from 14th in place of previous holder Josh Terao (American).

Through 10 matches, Jackson has tallied 45 takedowns while giving up just one. The pair have a combined dual point differential of +44 through five duals.

Into the Fray
Last weekend, two Indiana newcomers made their dual debuts in the Cream & Crimson singlet. Freshman Liam Cronin(125) stepped in for usual starter Elijah Oliver with the toughest slate of the weekend, against #5 Josh Rodriguez (NDSU) and #11 Freddie Rodriguez (SIUE).

Graduate transfer Chris Perez (149) wrestled the final bout for both duals, going 1-1 while lifting the Hoosiers to dual wins. The matches were Perez's first since suffering a season-ending injury on February 7 in Princeton's dual with Brown.

Big Ten Beginnings
Half of the Hoosiers' dual lineup will encounter their first ranked grappler of the season in IU's Big Ten opener: Cole Weaver(141), Chris Perez (149), Bryce Martin (165), Jake Hinz (197), and Fletcher Miller (285). Martin and Miller will arguably face the toughest challenges of the weekend; Martin takes the mat against #3 Isaac Jordan, while Miller meets unbeaten #2 Connor Medbery.

Sunday in Ypsilanti
IU will follow their dual against #11 Wisconsin with another tri dual meet on Sunday, December 11 at Eastern Michigan. The Hoosiers will wrestle Cleveland State (2-0) at 10:30 a.m. ET before taking on the hosting Eagles at noon.

The Hoosiers edged Eastern Michigan last season, while the Vikings won their last meet with Indiana in 2014. Exciting potential matchups include #18 Elijah Oliver (IU) vs. #25 Noah Gonser (EMU), Cole Weaver (IU) vs. #24 Kyle Springer (EMU), Fletcher Miller (IU) vs. #25 Gage Hutchinson (EMU), and #6 Nate Jackson (IU) vs. #23 Nick Corba (CSU).

Up Next: Indiana Duals
Next weekend, Indiana concludes their tri dual slate at home, facing Buffalo and Indiana Tech on Sunday, December 18. The events at University Gymnasium are expected to begin at 1 p.m. ET, and subsequent duals will follow with little break in between.

The Hoosiers hosted a tri dual meet last season and emerged with two wins. They won a 25-9 result against Eastern Michigan, which included Luke Blanton's upset of Nick Barber, before shutting out Manchester with a 56-0 win.

Back Points…
• Sophomore lightweight Elijah Oliver raised the bar for Indiana's fastest win by fall this season, earning a 17-second pin at the Navy Classic.
Nate Jackson picked up his 80th career win in the Navy Classic championship bout, a 12-4 major decision over #16 Steven Schneider (Binghamton).
• In Sunday's dual in Ypsilanti, Indiana wrestlers Cole Weaver (141) and Devin Skatzka (174) will compete in their home state of Michigan for the first time this season. It's Skatzka's first competition in Michigan as a varsity wrestler.
Elijah Oliver (125), Jake Danishek (157), and Nate Jackson (184) haven't conceded back points to their opponents this season.
• Sophomore Bryce Martin (165) ranks second on the team with 36 takedowns, and has only allowed 4 takedowns this season.
• Indiana's unattached grapplers have the weekend off this week, but they'll return to action on December 17 at the Cleveland State Open.

December 9, 2016

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana wrestling team fell one point short of an upset against #11 Wisconsin in their first Big Ten dual and first home dual meet of the season. The Badgers (2-0, 1-0) won the meet, 20-19, on the total match points tiebreaker criteria by a 69-64 margin. The Hoosiers (4-2, 0-1) came close to a repeat of last season's Big Ten opener, a 19-18 win on tiebreaker criteria at #12 Minnesota.

"In general, we wrestled really well," said Indiana head coach Duane Goldman. "When I look back at the match, I felt like we were the better team but we had seven guys score 63 points; we had three weights where we scored only one point between the three of them. That doomed us in the team score."

Jake Danishek (9-4) got the night going with a 9-4 decision, but Wisconsin gained a lead with a major decision from #3 Isaac Jordan (12-1) and a tight decision win by #20 Ryan Christensen. At 184 lbs., #6 Nate Jackson (11-0) maintained an unblemished record with an 11-2 major decision against Hunter Ritter (13-6), his 11th bonus point win of the season.

The Badgers extended their lead to 16-7, the largest deficit of the meet, before #13 Elijah Oliver (9-1) poured on an 18-2 technical fall with help from an 11-0 second period. Garrett Pepple (8-3) followed in the 133 lbs. bout with a 14-3 major decision, tying the dual at 16-16.

The dual came down to the final two matches with an even team score. Wisconsin took the lead with #14 Cole Martin's (13-4) decision win against Cole Weaver (3-4), putting the Hoosiers' hopes in the hands of redshirt senior Chris Perez. Perez (2-1) was resilient in the final two periods, picking up a 5-4 decision win against #18 Andrew Crone (13-3) and tying the meet at 19-19.

"It felt good to get back out there," Perez said after his win. "That's the best guy I've wrestled so far this year, and it was great to get back to that high level of competition. I know I can compete with those guys, it's just something I need to build on every match."

It's the third time this season that the Hoosiers have settled a dual meet in the tiebreaker criteria, and they're 1-2 in meets ending in a tie.

"We've had everybody on the team wrestle really well at different times," Goldman said. "We need everybody to come together at the same time in order to beat a team like Wisconsin."

Up Next: Indiana (4-2) vs. Cleveland State (1-0) / at Eastern Michigan (2-0)
Sunday, December 11 • Live Stats: IU vs. CSULive Stats: IU at EMU
Bowen Field House • Ypsilanti, Mich.

The Hoosiers will head to Ypsilanti for a tri dual against the Cleveland State Vikings and the hosting Eastern Michigan Eagles. The meet will begin at 9:00 a.m. ET with the Eagles taking on the Vikings. Indiana and Cleveland State will follow at around 10:30 a.m., and the Hoosiers will close the day against Eastern Michigan at noon. The event is Indiana's third tri dual meet this season; they are 3-1 in that format so far this year.

"Everybody has a sour taste in their mouths, but we need to be resilient and come back this weekend because Eastern Michigan is a really physical, well-conditioned, tough team," said Goldman. "If we go in with our heads hanging, it'll be really difficult. The good thing is that everybody is pretty upset, and they should be, but we also have to rest and recover to be competitive on Sunday."

NU WRESTLING: Wildcats Pin Way to 33-10 Win Over SIU-Edwardsville

Highlights: (http://snpy.tv/2gnHE8w)

Post-Match Interviews: Coach Storniolo | Anthony Rubinetti
EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern concluded the nonconference season with a convincing 33-10 win over SIU-Edwardsville Saturday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena that included three pins and two wins in sudden victory.

The Wildcats won seven matches to improve their record to 5-1 heading into Big Ten competition.
Redshirt-freshman Anthony Rubinetti got the fireworks started with a pin of No. 12 Freddie Rodriguez at 125 lbs. in the second match of the night. Rodriguez led 6-0 with a takedown and a four-point nearfall before Rubinetti got a reversal and then stuck Rodriguez for a huge upset win.

The next three wrestlers for Northwestern all won two-point decisions as the 'Cats built a 15-3 lead before the intermission. Redshirt-freshmen Jason Ipsarides and Alec McKenna both got takedowns in the final seconds of regulation to send their respective matches to sudden victory, where they both took their opponents down right away to win.

True freshman Shayne Oster then won an 11-9 decision in regulation to move to 7-3 in his first season.
SIU-Edwardsville won a pair of matches in a row to tighten the gap coming out of intermission, but the next three wrestlers for the 'Cats put an end to that in emphatic fashion.

Johnny Sebastian won his ninth match of the year with a second period fall of Jake Residori in 3:26. Seven of his wins have come with bonus points, and four of those are by fall.

Mitch Sliga followed suit with a second period fall of his own, one-second faster than Sebastian's. He pinned Jacob Godinez in 3:25. Jacob Berkowitz finished things off with a win by forfeit to bring the final margin to 33-10.

Northwestern begins Big Ten action next weekend when it travels to Wadsworth, Ohio to take on No. 5 Ohio State at Wadsworth High School on Friday, Dec. 16.

All-Americans Lead Hawkeyes Past Cyclones, 26-9

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa All-Americans Thomas Gilman, Brandon Sorensen, and Sammy Brooks led the third-ranked Hawkeye wrestling team to a 26-9 win over Iowa State on Saturday in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

Gilman and Brooks won by technical fall, and Sorensen earned his team-high fifth major decision to push Iowa past the Cyclones for the 13th straight time.

The Hawkeyes (5-0, 1-0) won seven-of-10 bouts overall and held a 19-10 advantage in takedowns, but won four decisions by a combined seven points.

“We were in some holes and the good thing is we bailed ourselves out of some holes,” said UI head coach Tom Brands. “I will say this, I heard that John Smith said after his dual with Oklahoma, and it's pretty true here, we're not just trying to beat Iowa State, we're trying to close a gap on the best teams in the country. That was a close dual even though the score was lopsided. There were some tough situations that we did not wrestle through and that is a concern, big time.”

Iowa State opened the dual with a win at 285, where Quean Smith defeated redshirt freshman Steven Holloway, 10-5. Holloway, a 197-pounder in 2015-16, was wrestling his eighth match at heavyweight in place of Iowa’s fifth-ranked Sam Stoll.

Gilman answered the Cyclones’ win with a 19-4 technical fall at 125, scoring six takedowns and four nearfall points before the match was terminated. Gilman, the nation’s top-ranked 125-pounder, led 16-4 after two periods and was credited two points at the third-period break when No. 18 Markus Simmons was dinged twice for stalling. An early third-period escape terminated the match at the 5:09 mark.

“I feel like I syphoned his gas into my gas tank when the guy was sitting there stalling,” Gilman said. “It fires me up a little bit. These guys come here and say they want to wrestle, but do they want to wrestle? I don't know. I take them to where they're uncomfortable and to deep waters.”

Gilman’s win gave Iowa a 5-3 team lead, but Iowa State swung back on top when 10th-ranked Earl Hall won 5-3 against Iowa’s Phillip Laux, who for the second straight week filled in for top-ranked Cory Clark.

The Cyclones led 6-5 when redshirt senior Topher Carton took the mat for the first time in the Cy-Hawk Series. Carton surrendered a late takedown to John Meeks in the opening period and trailed 3-0 in the second before finishing strong and scoring seven of the final eight points. He was credited with a technical point, a caution point, and tied the match with an escape 10 seconds into the third period. He finished the final frame with a pair of takedowns in to win 7-4 and give Iowa an 8-6 team lead and start a streak of six straight Hawkeye wins.

“Looking back at the match I probably could have set the tide a little bit more in the first period,” Carton said. “The second period I got in on a shot and didn’t finish it, that was the point where I felt I was getting more to my offense. I just have to go out and pull the trigger.”

Sorensen followed with a major decision at 149, and Cy-Hawk rookies Michael Kemerer and Joey Gunther picked up a pair of one-point decisions at 157 and 165, respectively.

“(Our) guys need to be thinking about scoring points when they're out there, not other things,” Brands said. “Guys don’t fall down when you blow on them. They fall down when you put them down, and if they don't go down right away, it’s multiple times. There are technical things and skills. Really when they're out there it's about repeated, repeated, repeated. And we didn't do that. But we did win some close matches.”

Alex Meyer scored on an escape and takedown in the third period to defeated No. 10 Lelund Weatherspoon at 174, 5-3, and Brooks finished his match and the Hawkeyes’ scoring with four nearfall points in the final seconds of his 19-3 win at 184 pounds. The Cyclones ended the dual with a 4-3 win at 197.

The Hawkeyes return to the mat Dec. 29-30 at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Illinois.

NOTES: Attendance was 10,046... Iowa has won 13 in a row against Iowa State… With the win, Iowa retained possession of the Dan Gable traveling trophy for the seventh time since the trophy’s inception in 2010… Iowa leads Iowa State 13-6 in the 2016-17 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series… Brands improved to 12-0 against Iowa State… Gilman is 8-0 this year with five pins and three technical falls… Holloway, Laux, Carton, Kemerer, Gunther, and Wilcke made their Cy-Hawk Series debuts.

PITTSBURGH – The 23rd-ranked Pitt wrestling team defeated West Virginia, 23-15, Sunday afternoon in the Fitzgerald Field House. In the 62nd meeting between the two teams, six Panthers recorded wins on the day.

With the win, Pitt improves to 4-2 on the season while the Mountaineers move to 0-4.

“We had a few guys out of the lineup and had the opportunity to get some others in and I think they did a good job,” head coach Jason Peters said. “I thought there were a few matches we could’ve won, but didn’t. Overall I thought it was a good win for being in a compromised position.”

Sophomore LJ Bentley got things started at 125 by picking up his first dual win of the season over Pittsburgh product Devin Brown. Bentley recorded five takedowns en route to the 12-3 major decision.

West Virginia posted wins at 133 and 141 pounds, taking a 6-4 advantage in the dual.

At 149 pounds, senior Mikey Racciato got things going again in favor of Pitt after defeating Christian Monserrat in an 11-8 decision. Racciato jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the first period. He would escape twice and take down Monserrat to secure the win.

Competing in just the second dual of his career, redshirt freshman Taleb Rahmani pinned Dayton Garrett in 55 seconds extending Pitt’s team lead to 13-6. Rahmani has now pinned a team-high five opponents this season.

At 165 pounds, sophomore TeShan Campbell, ranked No. 11 in the country, defeated Ryan Lopez in a 4-1 decision. Campbell took down Lopez early on in the first, picked up a point in the second thanks to back-to-back stall warnings against Lopez and picked up one more point with riding time at the end.

Freshman Austin Bell kept things going at 174 pounds as he shutout Ty Millward, 9-0, recording his first career dual win. After a scoreless first period, the Pittsburgh product recorded four points in the second and five points in the final frame to lock up the win.

Entering the final bout of the day, Pitt led the dual 20-15. Senior John Rizzo outlasted Brandon Ngati in the first tiebreaker to secure the Panthers’ win.

Pitt resumes action Dec. 29-30, as the team heads to the Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.
