A five-point run gave UD a 9-7 advantage in the third frame, but the Tigers answered with five consecutive points of their own and led the rest of the way.
Bellinger again led all players with 13 kills vs. the Rams, in addition to her team-high nine digs. Skryd finished with 26 digs during the match, while Kori Rasmussen added three aces and eight digs.

The Blue Hens won eight of 10 points early in the third set to take a 12-7 advantage, but Rhode Island answered with a 13-2 run to pull away.
HEAD COACH SARA MATTHEWS:
“We made some progress this weekend in certain areas, and in others we still have to continue to improve. Our first ball contact has to get better so we have more options offensively and can spread the ball out. We are excited to get back in the gym and get to work preparing for next weekend.”

• Clemson improved to 2-1 in the all-time series against Delaware
• The Tigers are the first of three ACC opponents for the Blue Hens, who will take on Miami (Fla.) and Boston College next weekend at Temple

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware volleyball team won the opening set but dropped the following three as the Blue Hens suffered a 3-1 defeat to Boston College Saturday afternoon at the Sonesta Hotel Philadelphia Cherry & White Challenge hosted by Temple.
The Eagles, who improved to 3-5, took the match by set scores of 20-25, 26-24, 25-9, 25-12. Delaware fell to 0-7 on the campaign.
UD outside hitter Maria Bellinger led the Blue Hens in kills for the seventh consecutive match with 14 on the day, while she ranked second on the squad with eight digs. Daria Robinson added six kills against Boston College, while Brooke Robertson and Bailey Pearlman added five apiece. Abby Skryd handed out 16 assists for Delaware, while Courtnie Roberts contributed a season-high 12 of her own.
Freshman libero Maddie Judge enjoyed an outstanding match for the Blue Hens, leading all players with a career-high 29 digs while also dishing out six assists and serving an ace. Judge and Bellinger represented Delaware on the All-Tournament Team.
Cat Balido slammed 20 kills and Lynn Braakhuis added 15 for the Eagles, while Jane Dejarld and Camille Oemcke combined for 43 assists.
Delaware controlled the first set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead and never trailing during the stanza. The Blue Hens led by at least four points from there, before a Bellinger kill put the set away for UD. The Hens exploded to an 11-5 advantage in the second frame, but the Eagles stormed back with nine straight points to take the lead. Delaware bounced back and had a set point at 24-23, but Boston College captured the next three points to pull even at a set apiece.
After the Eagles dominated the third set, Boston College jumped in front 11-5 in the fourth and never looked back from there.
Head Coach Sara Matthews:
“We are learning what it means as a group to go hard for every point and every set. We made some progress defensively, gave a lot more effort and had some great outcomes with that. I thought Maddie (Judge) was sensational today - having 29 digs in four sets is big-time. We are looking to carry some of that defensive momentum into practice this week as we prepare for a big weekend.”
Hen Scratchings:
• Judge’s 29 digs are the most in a four-set match since Taylor Hollingsworth also had 29 vs. Penn on Sept. 20, 2016
• Her 29 digs are also the most by a Blue Hen freshman since Ariel Shonk in 2012
• Bellinger reached double figure kills for the fifth consecutive match
• Boston College hit .246 for the match while the Blue Hens hit .082
• Delaware held an 8-5 edge in blocks
• Boston College defeated Delaware for the first time in four all-time meetings
• The Blue Hens faced an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent for the second straight weekend
Upcoming Schedule:
• Delaware vs. UMBC (George Washington Tournament) - Friday, September 15 (12 noon)
• Delaware at George Washington (George Washington Tournament) - Friday, September 15 (7 p.m.)

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team picked up its first win of the season with a five-set victory over UMBC before falling to George Washington in five sets as the Blue Hens split a pair of thrilling matches Friday at the GW Tournament.
UD head coach Sara Matthews earned her first career victory with the 25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 18-25, 15-10 triumph over the Retrievers (5-6) during the afternoon match. The Colonials (4-8) then edged the Blue Hens (1-8) 25-20, 26-24, 25-11, 21-25, 17-15 during the final match of the day.
Blue Hen sophomore Maria Bellinger produced a pair of tremendous performances on Friday, becoming just the second player in school history to record at least 25 kills in consecutive matches. Bellinger became the eighth player in Blue Hen history to post a 20-kill/20-dig match against UMBC with 25 kills and a career-high 20 digs, as she hit .340 on the afternoon.
The Paramus, N.J. native then set her career-high in kills for the second consecutive match by blasting 28 versus George Washington, tied for the sixth most in UD history.
Brooke Robertson also recorded a double-double with career-highs of 11 kills and 11 digs in the win over the Retrievers, while Baily Pearlman was the third Blue Hen to reach double figure kills with 11 of her own. Abby Skryd notched a double-double with 35 assists and a career-best 10 digs, while Courtnie Roberts handed out 21 assists and Maddie Judge made a match-high 22 digs.
After the teams traded the first four sets and were tied 8-8 in the fifth frame, Delaware won five straight points, including three straight on Bellinger kills, to take control. The Retrievers answered with the next two points, but Bellinger responded with a kill before Kori Rasmussen delivered an ace to seal the victory.
Bellinger added 14 digs against George Washington to post her second double-double of the day, while Robertson added a career-best 12 digs to go with nine kills. Raven Luckett contributed nine kills with no errors on 13 swings for a .692 hitting percentage, Skryd added 27 assists while Roberts dished out a career-best 24, and Judge led the team with 20 digs.
After dropping the opening set, kills by Bellinger and Robertson broke a 24-24 deadlock in the second to pull Delaware even. The Blue Hens fell behind by a set again, but led almost all of the fourth stanza to force the deciding set. The fifth frame featured an incredible 14 ties, with neither team leading by more than a point after they were knotted at 3-3. UD fought off a pair of match points, before an attack error by Pearlman and a Colonials ace gave George Washington the victory.
Head Coach Sara Matthews:
“I’m really proud of the progress and strides we are making. We are learning how to fight and have grit. We had some really great performances today. Raven (Luckett) is working so hard, and her numbers showed. Maddie (Judge) is continuing to be the cornerstone of our defense with at least 20 digs in both matches. And Maria (Bellinger) was off the charts. Obviously her offense was great but I am most proud of her defensive effort and working so hard to be a great complete player. We are looking forward to getting after it again tomorrow.”
Hen Scratchings:
• Bellinger’s 20-20 performance vs. UMBC is the 25th in program history, and the first since Alissa Alker vs. Northeastern on Oct. 19, 2012
• Bellinger’s 28 kills vs. GW are the most by a Blue Hen since Katie Hillman belted 28 in a five-set win over UMBC on Sept. 6, 2013
• The only other UD player with consecutive 25-kill matches is Colleen Walsh, who had 32 vs. William & Mary (Nov. 10, 2006) and 27 vs. VCU (No. 11, 2006)
• Delaware played its first two five-set matches of the season
• Bellinger now has eight career double-doubles, while Robertson and Skryd notched their first double-doubles at UD during the win over UMBC
• The Blue Hens improved to 27-8 vs. the Retrievers and defeated UMBC for the fifth straight meeting
• GW now leads the all-time series vs. Delaware, 10-4, although the teams were meeting for the first time since 2004

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Blue Hen sophomore Bailey Pearlman slammed a career-high 14 kills as the University of Delaware volleyball team wrapped up action at the GW Tournament with a three-set victory over Holy Cross Saturday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Delaware, which won two of three matches at the invitational to improve to 2-8 on the year, captured the match by set scores of 25-20, 25-23, 25-18. Holy Cross, which dropped its fourth straight match, fell to 3-10 on the campaign.
Pearlman led all players with 14 kills against just three errors on 26 swings, hitting .423 for the match. Brooke Robertson added 10 kills and a .364 attack average, while Maria Bellinger narrowly missed her third consecutive double-double with nine kills and nine digs.
Abby Skryd handed out 23 assists while Courtnie Roberts added 15 for the Blue Hens, and Maddie Judge finished with a match-best 18 digs.
Katie Kerins and Emmerson Smith each led the Crusaders with eight kills, while Sophie VanSeveren added 18 digs.
Delaware led 22-20 late in the first set before taking the final three points, including the final point on a Pearlman kill, to take the early lead. The second set featured 12 ties, the final time at 19-19, but Delaware captured the next two points to take the lead for good before putting the set away on a Bellinger kill. UD used a six-point run to take a 10-6 advantage in the third set, leading the rest of the way before a Pearlman kill sealed the victory.
Head Coach Sara Matthews:
Our team was a lot more consistent this weekend. We have been talking about learning how to play harder for longer amounts of stretches, and we did that this weekend. Even though we swept today, I was a little disappointed in our lack of discipline at times. We will need to clean that up going into conference play. That being said, I am proud of their resiliency and finish. We have some great production from Brooke (Robertson) and Bailey (Pearlman) today. And Maria (Bellinger) had a great all around weekend. We are excited to get back in the gym and prepare for conference play.
Hen Scratchings:
• The match marked the first time this season Bellinger did not lead the Blue Hens in kills
• Delaware’s .221 attack percentage was its highest of the year
• Bellinger and Judge represented Delaware on the All-Tournament Team for the second straight invitational
• Delaware improved to 2-0 all-time vs. Holy Cross, with the other victory coming in 1993
• The contest marked the Blue Hens’ final non-conference match of the season
Upcoming Schedule:
• Delaware at *William & Mary - Thursday, September 21 (7 p.m.)
• Delaware at *Elon - Saturday, September 23 (7 p.m.)
• Delaware vs. *Northeastern - Friday, September 29 (5 p.m.)

UBJECT: Slow Starts Loom Large as Wilmington Volleyball Falls to Georgian Court in Straight Sets

DATE: September 22, 2017
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women’s volleyball team fell into early holes in each set, allowing Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Georgian Court to take the match in straight sets on Friday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 30-28, 25-18, and 25-16.

The Wildcats (5-8, 1-2 CACC) committed 25 errors on the night and hit just .074, but it was the early holes they dug themselves into that hurt their cause. They nearly pulled off the large comeback in the first set, however.

The Lions (1-11, 1-2 CACC) came out of the gates and scored the first five points of the match, forcing the Wildcats into an early timeout. The Wildcats scored six of the next nine points to get back to within 8-6, but then the Lions rattled off seven straight to widen the gap to 15-6. A service ace put the visitors ahead, 21-12, before the Wildcats answered.

Jill Braunsberg started a 5-0 run with a kill to get back to within 21-17. The Lions moved ahead, 23-18, but the Wildcats didn’t roll over as an Eile Harris kill sparked a 4-0 run to get to within 23-22. The Lions earned set point but a Rebecca Rawlinson kill and a Lion attack error tied the set at 24. The Wildcats got their first set point at 28-27, but the Lions answered with three straight kills to take the first game, 30-28.

The Wildcats again fell behind early in the second set as the Lions came out with a 4-1 lead. A Georgian Court 5-1 spurt put the visitors ahead, 10-5, before another 3-0 rally put them in front, 14-7. The Wildcats attempted another comeback in the second set, as Emma Kongevold put down a swing to claw back to 17-15. But the Lions retaliated once again, answering with runs of 4-1 and 7-2 to regain a 24-17 lead. The Lions’ Aubrey Binkley gave the visitors a 2-0 lead with a kill, 25-18.

Georgian Court kept the momentum in their favor in the beginning of the third set, jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead, forcing the Wildcats into another early timeout. Peggy Rosario put the Lions ahead, 11-3, with a kill before the Wildcats answered with a 6-0 run of their own to get to within 11-9. But the Lions countered once again, responding with a 6-0 run of their own to regain a 17-9 lead. Kills from Harris and Deja Stanek sparked runs of 3-0 and 6-3, as Erin Bistany brought the Wildcats to within 20-15 with a kill. It wasn’t enough, however, as the Lions scored the next four points to gain match point, 24-15. A service error ended the match for the Wildcats, 24-16.

Braunsberg led the offense with 10 kills, adding 13 assists for the double-double. Miranda Shaw paced the offense with 18 assists while Addalyn Flores led the back row with 22 digs. Brittany Ford chipped in with 10 digs as well. Rawlinson had two solo blocks to go with two block assists while Harris finished with three block assists and a solo block.

The Wildcats have a chance to wipe the loss from their memory, as they get right back onto the court on Saturday afternoon. They head to Caldwell on Saturday for a cross-divisional contest starting at 4:30 p.m.

HEAD COACH SARA MATTHEWS

We did a great job fighting really hard for stretches, we just need to maintain that type of defensive effort for a whole match. I thought our block game was really big when we needed it. Julia (Hayes) had a great match defensively. We also had some other people step in and play really poised. Kori (Rasmussen) came in, served tough and dug some balls to extend rallies and put us in situations to win. Courtnie (Roberts) came in and ran a five-one and did a great job distributing the ball. When you have chances to steal road matches you have to capitalize on them. We are looking forward to being home this week after traveling for five straight weeks. We need our Blue Hen nation to come out and support us!"

SUBJECT: Delaware Volleyball Adds Missouri Transfer Andie Hanus To Program

DATE: January 29, 2018

NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware volleyball head coach Sara Matthews has announced that Missouri transfer Andie Hanus has joined the Blue Hen program and will have two years of eligibility with UD beginning in the 2018 season.

Hanus, a libero from Omaha, Neb., will begin playing with the Blue Hens during the upcoming spring season.

Hanus appeared in all 34 matches last fall for the Tigers, who finished with a 22-12 record, placed third in the SEC with a 13-5 mark, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. She posted 98 digs on the year, including a career-high eight against BYU.

After initially planning to redshirt in 2016, Hanus ended up playing in 14 matches during her freshman season with the Tigers, finishing with 16 digs and four assists.

Prior to arriving as Missouri, Hanus was a three-year starter at Marian High School, helping lead the school to three straight state championships. She was named Under Armour Girls High School All-American Honorable Mention as a senior.

“We are thrilled to have Andie joining our team this spring,” Matthews said. “She brings a wealth of playing experience at a very high level at one of the top conferences in the country. We expect her to make an immediate impact on the court both athletically and leadership wise. Her consistent reception ability and overall ball control will raise the level of play in our gym. She is a great competitor and we are excited she is joining our Blue Hen family.”
