A Tabatha Richardson-Smith layup with 15 seconds remaining tied the game up at 72-72, the contest's 11th tie of the night.

The second overtime was all Rutgers, as the Scarlet Knights outscored the Pirates, 19-7, for the win. RU denied Seton Hall a field goal until less than a minute remained, while the Scarlet Knights were clutch from the free throw line, hitting 13-of-14. Laney went a perfect 6-of-6 while Canty shot 4-of-4 from the stripe during the second OT.

Three Scarlet Knights finished the game with at least 20 points, led by a career-high 29 from freshman Tyler Scaife (Little Rock, Ark.) off the bench and a double-double by sophomore Kahleah Copper (Philadelphia, Pa.). Scaife went 12-of-24 from the field after coming off the RU bench for the second-straight game and was a perfect 5-of-5 at the line. Copper notched her fifth double-double of the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Laney, meanwhile, added in 27 points, including a 13-of-15 night from the line.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 14, 2014) - Led by double-double efforts from junior guard Briyona Canty (Willingboro, N.J.) and senior forward Betnijah Laney (Clayton, Del.), Rutgers rolled to a 74-60 victory over Northeastern on Tuesday night at the RAC.

Rutgers improved to 2-0 and improves its win-streak to eight games dating back to last season's WNIT championship run.

A total of five Scarlet Knights concluded the game in double figures. Freshman Tyler Scaife (Little Rock, Ark.) paced the squad with 15 points, while Laney recorded her 17th career double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Canty had her first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 10 assists. Juniors Kahleah Copper (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Rachel Hollivay (Columbus, Miss.) also added to count, notching 10 points apiece.

Northeastern jumped to an early 7-4 lead to start the contest, holding Rutgers scoreless for nearly a three-minute span. With the Huskies ahead, 12-6, five minutes into the contest, Laney drained a jumper to end RU's drought as the Scarlet Knights would go on to take a 12-0 run and take over the lead for good.

Huskie Samantha DeFreese ended the drought for her squad with two free throws, but junior Cynthia Hernandez (Ventura, Calif.) responded by coming off the bench to sink her first collegiate three-pointer to give RU a 23-14 advantage with 5:50 remaining in the first half.

Three-point shooting kept the game close late in the first half. Back-to-back three-pointers from Tiffany Montagne and Samantha DeFreese saw RU lead by only two, 27-25, with under three minutes remaining in first stanza. Rutgers, however, put a halt to Northeastern's momentum, holding the Huskies scoreless over the final 2:47 of the half and entered the locker room ahead, 35-25.

RU's 10-point halftime lead was turned into a 20-point advantage by the mid-way point of the second half. Rutgers used a 17-4 run with six different Scarlet Knights getting into the scoring mix, capped by senior Syessence Davis (Neptune, N.J.) drilling a three, for its largest lead of the night, a 64-36 edge with 8:25 to go.

Northeastern used three-point shooting and free throws to minimize its deficit to 14 by the game's final horn. The Huskies, who shot 9-of-23 from three-point range on the night, went 2-of-5 from beyond the arc and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe in the game's final five minutes.

Montagne led the Huskies in registering a game-high 22 points.

Rutgers returns to action facing its first road test of the season at LSU on Saturday, Nov. 22. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. EST.

As Jasmine Nwajei's three-pointer cut the Rutgers lead to 29-23, two minutes later the Scarlet Knights would claim a double-digit edge, one they would not relinquish the rest of the night.

Rachel Hollivay sunk two free throws with just over three minutes remaining to give RU a 10-point edge and double-digit lead the rest of the way. The Scarlet Knights entered the half with a 50-37 advantage.

The second half started with RU on an 8-0 run and by the midway point of the second half the Scarlet Knights had outscored the Seahawks, 20-6. Wagner, who had kept the game close in the first half on its three-point prowess, shot only 2-of-10 from three-point range in the second.

Rutgers' Betnijah Laney to Miss Iona Game
Scarlet Knight Senior Forward Injured Thumb Against Tennessee

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (December 17, 2014) - Rutgers women's basketball head coach C. Vivian Stringer has announced senior forward Betnijah Laney (Clayton, Del.) will sit out Saturday's game with Iona after suffering a sprained thumb on her left hand in RU's contest with Tennessee on Dec. 14.

"Betnijah suffered a bad sprain on the first play of the game on Sunday. It was obvious she was in pain, but she tried to play through it," said Stringer. "She'll be on the sideline when we play Iona as she heals. We'll continue to monitor Betnijah's hand and evaluate the healing process throughout the next few days before determining a time table for her return."

Entering last Sunday's game with the Lady Vols, Laney had been averaging 16.0 points and 14.8 rebounds, ranking first in the country in double-doubles and third nationally in rebounding.

After suffering the thumb injury moments into Tennessee game, Laney went on to end the contest with four points and five rebounds.

The Rutgers women's basketball team (8-2), who remained at No. 17 in the Associated Press and at No. 19 in the ESPN/USA Today Polls this week, closes out nonconference play with Iona on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. in New Rochelle, New York.

No. 17/19 Rutgers Women's Basketball Closes Out Nonconference Play With 66-58 Win at Iona
Senior Syessence Davis Nearly Captures Triple Double With 12 Points, 10 Rebounds & Nine Assists

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (Dec. 20, 2014) - The Rutgers women's basketball team ended nonconference play with a 66-58 victory over Iona College on Saturday afternoon at the Hynes Athletics Center. The Scarlet Knights will enter Big Ten action with a 9-2 overall record.

Syessence Davis (Neptune, N.J.) earned the starting nod in place of the injured Betnijah Laney (Clayton, Del.) and nearly captured a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Kahleah Copper (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the team with 19 points and Tyler Scaife (Little Rock, Ark.) rounded out the double-figure scorers posting 11 of her own in the win.

Iona was led by Damika Martinez, the nation's second leading scorer. Martinez was limited in the first half with three fouls and only five points, but finished with a game-high 22 points in the loss. Aaliyah Robinson poured in 11 points and Joy Adams posted 10 for the Gaels.

The Scarlet Knights started off the contest with nine unanswered points, holding the Gaels scoreless for nearly five minutes to start off action, before Martinez ended the Iona drought. RU continued to pull ahead as Cynthia Hernandez (Ventura, Calif.), coming off the bench, nailed a basket from beyond the arc to double RU's lead at 14-7 with 13:14 left in the half.

The Gaels used a 5-0 run during a two minute span to cut its deficit to 14-12. However, Rutgers would respond with eight uncontested points over the next six minutes to expand its lead to 22-12 with 8:04 left in the half. Iona's Joy Adams ended that run at the 5:43 mark, sending the teams into a neck-and-neck battle.

Copper gave Rutgers a seven-point cushion with 2:57 left in the half, 26-19, but the Gaels would make it a one-point ball game entering the intermission. Down the stretch Iona outscored the Scarlet Knights 8- 2 as RU hung on to a 28-27 halftime edge, the closest halftime margin with any opponent this season.

Moving into the second half, Rutgers never lost the lead, but Iona would keep the game close. Each time the Gaels would come within reach of passing the Scarlet Knights on the scoreboard, Rutgers would continue to punch back.

After opening the second stanza outscoring Iona, 7-2, and taking a six-point lead, the Gaels countered on a run of its own. Iona's Cassidee Ranger closed the gap on three as RU held onto a 36-34 lead with 14:28 to go.

Within two and half minutes though, the Scarlet Knights bumped its edge up to eight. Six of Rutgers next points came from the hands of Copper as RU went on an 8-2 run for a 44-36 lead with 12:02 left.

After a three-pointer by Shrita Parker (Va. Beach, Va.) gave the Scarlet Knights a 49-41 edge at the midway point, the Gaels countered again. Relying on three-pointers and free throws, Iona outscored Rutgers, 8-3, including five unanswered points, during the next three minutes. Marina Lizarazu cut the Gael deficit to 51-49, with just under seven minutes to play, but it would be
closest Iona would get the rest of the afternoon.

RU struck back with a 6-0 run and led by as many as nine down the stretch.

Rutgers returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 28 as the Scarlet Knights open Big Ten play on the road at Indiana. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. ET.

Junior Kahleah Copper Joins the 1,000 Point Club; Junior Cynthia Hernandez Breaks Out For Season-High 17 Points on 5-of-6 Shooting From Three-Point Range

MADISON, Wisc. (January 18, 2015) - Kahleah Copper (Philadelphia, Pa.) netted her 1,000th career point and Cynthia Hernandez (Ventura, Calif.) collected a season-high 17 points, shooting a blistering 5-of-6 from three-point range, as the No. 24/22 Rutgers women's basketball team returned to the win column in a 73-63 victory over Wisconsin on Sunday at the Kohl Center.

The Scarlet Knights improved to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in Big Ten play, while the Badgers fell to 7-10 overall and 3-4 in league action.
Hernandez was one of five Scarlet Knights in double figures in the victory. In addition to her game-high 17 points, Betnijah Laney (Clayton, Del.) captured her 12th double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Copper, who collected her 1,000th career point off a free throw midway through the second half, ended the game with 14 points, while Rachel Hollivay (Columbus, Miss.) came off the bench for 11 points. Tyler Scaife (Little Rock, Ark.) rounded out the double figure Scarlet Knights with 10 points.

The Badgers were led by Dakota Whyte with 17 points, while Jacki Gulczynski added in 13 points and Tessa Cichy had 10 points in the loss.
It was a slow start to the game as neither team could find an offensive rhythm in the opening minutes. It took over three minutes in before Wisconsin brought the scoreless drought and from there it was a back and forth battle. The game endured six ties before Rutgers took its first lead of the afternoon. Hernandez drained the first of her five three-pointers to give the Scarlet Knights a 15-14 edge with 11:30 left in the opening stanza.

While the Badgers would knot the score at 17-17 moments later off a Gulczynski three-pointer, RU would go on a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead for good.
Briyona Canty (Willingboro, N.J.), in her second game back from a bone bruise suffered in the Big Ten opener at Indiana on Dec. 28, connected on a jumper to give Rutgers its largest lead of the first half, a nine-point, 32-23, edge with 3:28 remaining.

Wisconsin, however, had a late push rattling off six answered points to pull within three with less than 15 seconds remaining before the intermission. Following a timeout, Hernandez hit another three at the buzzer to give the Scarlet Knights a 35-29 lead heading into the locker room.

After Rutgers extended its lead to 10 in the opening moments of the second half, the Badgers used an 8-2 run to close to shrink their deficit down to four. Whyte capped the run on a fastbreak with 13:47 to go as RU held on to a 41-37 lead.

A three-pointer by Gulczynski and a layup by Whyte pulled the Badgers to within one, 43-42, with 12:12 to play, but Hernandez and Syessence Davis (Neptune, N.J.) hit back-to-back three's to spark a 19-6 Scarlet Knight run.

Copper gave Rutgers its largest lead of the afternoon off a free throw as the Scarlet Knights pushed ahead 49-63 with 6:33 left in the game.

An 8-2 output by Wisconsin's trimmed the Badger deficit to eight about four minutes later, but a free throw by Hollivay and another shot from downtown by Hernandez made it 69-57 with 1:56 remaining.

The Rutgers women's basketball team has a week to rest up before its next contest. The Scarlet Knights host Minnesota on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 5:15 p.m. at the RAC. The game will be televised on BTN.

KNIGHT NOTES- RU finished with five in double figures for the third time this season and for the first time since the Davidson game on Nov. 30.- Kahleah Copper ended the game with 14 points and became the 35th Scarlet Knight to reach 1,000 career points. Thanks to a pair of steals by Copper and Syessence Davis (Neptune, N.J.), the Scarlet Knights were able to hold off Illinois for the remainder of the first half to carry a 36-28 advantage into halftime.

The Scarlet Knights opened the second half outscoring the Fighting Illini, 18-8, and established a 55-36 edge as the clock read 12:28 left.

Kyley Simmons knocked in a three-pointer in an attempt to stump the run, but Rutgers responded with nine-uncontested points, while holding Illinois scoreless for nearly five minutes of play.
The run helped to develop RU's largest lead of the night, 64-39, with 7:40 left in the game.

The lead would only grow as the Scarlet Knights registered another four points straight to jump in front, 68-41, after only a minute had expired.

Rutgers maintained at least a 22-point edge over Illinois for the remainder of the contest.
Despite the solid lead, the Scarlet Knights never let up as Cynthia Hernandez (Buena, Calif.) drained consecutive buckets from beyond the arc to keep the RU offense rolling en-route to the 24-point victory.

The Rutgers women's basketball team wraps up its road slate with two consecutive trips. The Scarlet Knights first stop at Michigan State on Sunday, February 22, for an ESPN2 contest followed by a trip to Northwestern on Thursday, Feb. 26 on BTN Plus.
