The action moves to Glasgow High School for Day 4 starting at 3:30 pm when the Woodbridge Blue Raider Girls (8-1) visit the Gauger-Cobbs Cobras (6-0). Woodbridge is coached by Brian Gazinski and Gauger is coached by Antonnikka Owens. At 4:45 pm The Woodbridge Boys (7-2) play the Gauger Boys (2-4) and at 6:00 pm the Gunning Bedford Lady Panthers (2-0) play Shue-Medill Lady Tigers (5-2). The Blue Raiders is coached by Julius Mullen for his second year. Last year Mullen took over mid-season for Preston Grace and won the Grotto’s Championship. The Gauger Cobras are coached by Kendall Daniels. The Lady Panthers are coached by Kevin McDermott while Matt Owens leads the Shue Lady Tigers. At 7:15 pm the undefeated Gunning Bedford Boys (2-0) play the undefeated Shue-Medill Tigers (6-0) for the right to go on to the Grotto’s Championship against southern Delaware top seed set for Delaware State University at 7:30 pm Sunday, February 17th. Last year the Shue-Medill Boys made it to the final on Gabe Valmond’s famous three-quarter court shot but the Tigers came up just short in the finale against the Woodbridge. Gunning Bedford Boys are Coached by Amos Vann and Shue is coached again by Robert Brown.



For February 14th Valentine’s Day, Game 19 was moved From Milford Central Academy/Milford High School to Postlethwait Middle School at 4:00. This game will feature the Millsboro Golden Knight Ladies (8-3) from the Indian River School District, versus the Postlethwait Lady Riders (6-3) from the Caesar Rodney School District. This will be the first time for the Millsboro Ladies competing in the Capital Classic. Millsboro is coached by Jesse Long and the Postlethwait Lady Riders are led by Raykeem Ward. Millsboro is led by Lenijah Garrison who averages 15 points per game,Selaya Garrison with 10 ppg and McKenna Boyle with 7 ppg. Postlethwait has 3 outstanding student-athletes: Kallie Hopkins, Sydney Hatch and Sacha Mardesich.



On February 15th the last day of round one takes place at Milford Central Academy/Milford High School. At 4:00 pm the boys 5th Place Trophy Game of the ATI Physical Therapy Bracket takes place between the losers of the Bayard vs. Fifer game and the PCA vs. Dover Air game. At 5:15 pm The Selbyville Middle Lady Indians (5-6) visit the Milford Lady Buccaneers (4-6). Selbyville is coached by Matthew Mayette and Milford Girls are coached by Leona White. At 6:30 pm The Postlethwait Rider Boys (8-2) will also visit the Milford Buccaneers Boys (9-2). Postlethwait won the first highly exciting meeting against Milford back on December 19th 42-41 with Postlethwait making an unlikely late comeback making two steals and making 4 straight free throws in the last minute at Milford. Postlethwait is coached by Duane Coverdale and Milford is led by Tony Hazzard, Terry’s cousin of Mariner Fame.


Capital Classic action moves on to Delaware State University on Saturday February 16th and Sunday February 17th for 16 games with 8 each day. Games begin each day at 9:00 am and the last contest of the day starts at 7:30 pm. These games will feature 3rd place games for the first four games of the day and four championship games for the last four games of each day respectively.



Dover Central Middle leads all schools with 11 overall bracket wins in 13 years, followed by Woodbridge with 7 and Milford and Smyrna with 6. Fifer has 5, while Postlethwait has 4 titles. Friday February 14th and Monday February 18th President’s Day are designated snow make-up days.

The Announcers/Master of Ceremonies for the Capital Classic will be “The Voice of C.R. Rider Sports” Jay McCormick and John “Marty” Martin, Capital School Board President and education specialist. DJ N2IT Norman Royal will be playing the 1’s and 2’s in 302 throughout the Capital Classic.


A total of 628 awards will be presented including trophies, plaques and medals. Included are individual trophies for first place in each of the eight brackets and individual medals for second and third place in all eight brackets. A 5th place team trophy will also be presented in the D Bracket where there are 6 teams. Also, team trophies for first, second and third will be handed out. Five all-tournament players will be selected in each of the eight brackets in addition to eight MVP awards as well as selected by coaches. Crown Trophies will present 36 sportsmanship trophies to one player on each team who exemplifies sportsmanship on and off the court.



This year’s Capital Classic will be dedicated to Mike Rice, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Providence Creek Academy who died tragically in 2018. The Capital Classic will present ‘The Mike Rice Student Athlete Awards” to one male and one female student-athletes from Providence Creek Academy and one female and one male from the rest of the teams. The award is designed for student-athletes who displays a high level of efficiency on the court, in the classroom and in the school community. Rice was only 31 and well-loved throughout the PCA community and beyond.


Entry fee for the Capital Classic will be $5 for all spectators at all sites. Players, managers, school principals, administration and coaches of the Capital Classic have free admission throughout the tournament. Concession stands will be at all locations including hot dogs, nachos, candy, chips, cookies and beverages.
